Kommer oor toeris wat nog nie gevind is nie

’n Toeris van Kaapstad is as vermis by die Augrabieswaterval- Nasionale Park aangemeld.
Die 66-jarige man het blykbaar op Donderdag 10 April alleen by die park ingeboek, en die volgende dag op ’n staptog op een van die talle staproetes vertrek.
Inligting oor die vermiste man is Dinsdagoggend 15 April bekend gemaak.
Kol. Cherelle Ehlers, polisiewoordvoerder, sê toe hy Vrydag teen 16:30 nog nie van die staproete teruggekeer het nie, het die parkpersoneel dit by die polisiekantoor in Augrabies-dorp aangemeld.
Sy besittings en voertuig was steeds in die park.
Ehlers sê ’n uitgebreide soektog na die vermiste man is onmiddellik daarna begin.
Lede van die polisie in Augrabies, die polisie se lugvleuel, Upington soek-en-reddingeenheid, honde-eenheid, asook iemand wat ’n hommeltuig beheer, is by die soektog betrek.
Genevieve Maasdorp, kommunikasiebestuurder van
die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Parke se ariede streek, sê die vermiste man se identiteit word nog nie bekend gemaak nie. Sy naasbestaandes is bewus van die feit dat hy vermis word, sê sy.
Ehlers vra dat enigeen met inligting wat kan help om die vermiste man op te spoor, kapt. Robert Turner by 082 770 4208 bel, of sers. Tshepo Marungwana by 084 298 5101. Intussen word verwag dat die vloei van die Augrabieswaterval teen Vrydag 18 April tot 3 000 m³ per sekonde (kumek) sal styg, sê Maasdorp. Op Dinsdag 15 April was die vloei 2 732 kumek.
Maasdorp sê op Donderdag 2 Maart 2023 het die vloei ’n piek van 4 596 kumek bereik. Sy sê dit was die hoogste wat dit gemeet was ná die vloed in 2011, toe dit by 4 799 kumek gepiek het.
’n Toestroming van besoekers na die Augrabieswaterval word oor Paasnaweek en die ander vakansiedae in April en begin Mei verwag. Die hoë vloei in die Oranjerivier ontstaan weens die gekombineerde uitvloei vanaf die Vanderkloofdam en die Bloemhofdam.

Dam Levels word aangedui dat die vlak van die Vaaldam teen Dinsdag met 2% gedaal het, en dat die Vaaldam 110,7% vol is. Oor die afgelope naweek was die vlak op 115%.
Volgens die departement van water en sanitasie (DWS) sou twee sluise van die Vaaldam Dinsdagoggend toegemaak word, wat die uitvloei sou verminder.
Die uitvloei vanuit die Bloemhofdam, wat blykbaar teen Dinsdag 99,62% vol was, word ook geleidelik verminder.
Dit neem egter ’n paar dae voordat die water wat by dié damme vrygelaat word, die Augrabieswaterval bereik, met die piek oor die dae rondom Paasnaweek verwag.
Soos De Wet Theron, ’n gereelde besoeker aan die Augrabieswaterval en inwoner van die omgewing in ’n Facebook-plasing skryf: “Dis tyd om op te hou cumecs tel en oor vloeigetalle te worry en te kom kyk. Die skouspel is reeds hier ... jou oë kyk nie in cumec nie, net in mooi, en dit is daar reeds genoeg van.”

Twee sterf saam

“Sy was ’n lieflike mens en kon so maklik vriende maak. Altyd opgeruimd en vol grappies wanneer sy tussen haar vriende gekuier het,” vertel Elfreda Eiman (52), ma van Petrochelle Springbok.
Petrochelle (34) is saam met haar vriendin, die 23-jarige Luwina Swartz, in ’n motorongeluk buite Upington oorlede.
Op 5 April het die swanger Petrochelle se water gebreek, en moes sy vanaf Sesbrugge na ’n hospitaal in Upington geneem word. Petrochelle, ’n enkelouer, was swanger met haar tweede kind.
Sesbrugge, ook bekend as Kalksloot is 15km vanaf Upington.
’n Buurvrou, Tiesie Titus (36), ’n lid van die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Weermag in Upington, het teen 18:00 vir Petrochelle, Luwina, Maryna Mienies (45) en Sharon Sauls in haar VW Polo Vivo gelaai, om vir Petrochelle by die Dr. Harry Surtie-hospitaal te kry.
In die omgewing van Kameelmond, sowat drie kilometer buite Upington, het die bestuurder glo beheer oor die voertuig verloor, dit het die N14-pad verlaat en in die veld gerol.
Luwina is op die ongelukstoneel dood verklaar en Petrochelle het met haar aankoms in die hospitaal aan
haar beserings beswyk. Haar baba het ook nie die ongeluk oorleef nie.
“Ek weet nie wat gebeur het nie. Dit was so skielik,” sê Tiesie.
Volgens haar was die ambulans vroeg reeds van die ongeluk in kennis gestel, en om vir Petrochelle hospitaal toe te neem.
“Hulle en die polisie het eers baie laat by die ongelukstoneel opgedaag,” sê sy.
Tiesie se linkerskouer is in die ongeluk gebreek en Maryna het diep skrape aan haar linkerbeen opgedoen. Daar is ook blou kolle rondom haar oë.
Teen Maandagoggend 14 April was Sharon steeds in die hospitaal met ’n gebreekte knie.
Luwina was ’n seisoenwerker
op die plaas Lekkerwater waar sy gehelp het met die verpakking van rosyne en druiwe.
“Luwina was ’n tipiese lewenslustige jongmens, wat die lewe geniet het, ongeag die moeilike uitdagings van die lewe hier by ons,” sê haar 40-jarige ma Cecilia.
“Almal hier weet hoe sy was, respekvol teenoor grootmense, vriendelik, mooi gemanierd en so lieflik met haar mooi glimlag.”
Petrochelle word oorleef deur haar ouers, ’n vyfjarige dogtertjie, twee susters en ’n broer. Luwina laat haar ouers, drie susters en vier broers agter.
Die twee vriendinne is Saterdag saam vanuit die Rooms Katolieke kerk in Sesbrugge ter ruste gelê.

Taking part in the Miss Unity South Africa (SA) 2025 pageant was a great experience where she learnt more about herself, and where she realised that no dream is too big or far-fetched.
Mathapelo Princess Atoro, who turned 27 years on 14 April, says she was proud to walk the stage at the end of March in Menlyn, Pretoria, as a finalist in this pageant.
Atoro says when walking the stage, she was not only representing the Northern Cape (where she lives in Warrenton) but also the Free State, where she was born in Wepener.
"I decided to enter for Miss Unity SA as I believe that women are phenomenal beings and should not just be judged based on their physical features, but also on their acts of selflessness, kindness, and the roles they play in communities."
After entering the pageant last year, she was announced as a finalist on 30 November. In 2020, she was crowned as Miss Philantrophy South Africa.
Although feeling anxiouse during the weeks prior to the pageant, Atoro worked tirelessly to prepare. She was spellbound on the day.
"I learnt that when women come together, incredible things happen. It is beautiful to listen to other women sharing their stories and how they have made it this far. I also learned how powerful unity amongst women is. I have found sisters amongst my fellow finalists - that showed how beautiful this chapter has been.
She also realised that she is a queen, with or without a physical crown.
Atoro’s advice to young women is to be united.
"Through unity, we can achieve formidable things. We can break barriers, break stigmatisation of so many issues."
Another word of advice from Atoro is that you should not let your present circumstances discourage you from reaching your dream.
Atoro is passionate to let her voice be heard on gender-based violence (GBV): "May our justice system work tirelessly to apprehend perpetrators of GBV crimes," she says.
She is currently trying to get her gift-packaging business off the ground. Furthermore, she is doing an online course in teaching English as a foreign language.

This criteria shall not apply to special schools, schools of skill or industrial schools.

Walking a powerful metaphor
Currently at the William Humphreys Art Gallery (Whag) in Kimberley, is the solo art exhibition of Ulric “Namasun” Roberts, an artist from the Namaqualand. According to Chepape Makgato, chief curator of the Whag, Roberts’ multidisciplinary approach - spanning painting, printmaking, and installation - unearths histories often marginalised, offering a counter-narrative that invites critical engagement. In his work, Roberts meditates on themes of life, memory, and ancestral wisdom. The concept of walking becomes a powerful metaphor in the exhibition, with pieces such as “Walk to heal” and “Tyd stap aan.” Through the use of wheelchairs, shoes, and walking sticks as metaphors, he acknowledges the varied ways people move through spaces, whether on wheels, with assistance, or on foot. This participatory element underscores the universality of movement and transition, reflecting the shared human experience of navigating personal and historical landscapes. Magspel vertrap werkers se vertroue in demokrasie
Die voortbestaan van demokrasie oor die wêreld heen is in die weegskaal met aanduidings dat regerings en maatskappye die kern van demokrasie probeer onderdruk.
Dít volgens Global Rights Index (GRI) se jaarlikse verslag, wat aandui dat van die kernpilare van demokrasie die fundamentele regte en vryhede van werkende mense is. Volgens die 2024-verslag word dit oor die wêreld heen doelbewus deur dié in beheer verminder.
Miljoene huishoudings word toenemend deur beperkte inkomste en hoër lewenskoste afgetakel. Intussen beperk beleidmakers en sakeleiers werkers se regte om gesamentlik billike lone te eis of om hul reg om te staak wettiglik uit te oefen. Ongeag herhaaldelike oproepe tot billike lone en werksvoorwaardes, verbrokkel werkers se vertroue in demokrasie, aldus die verslag.
Volgens die indeks word lande op ’n skaal van 1 tot 5+ geplaas volgens die respek vir werkersregte getoon. Op dié skaal dui 1 sporadiese oortredings van werkersregte deur regerings en maatskappye aan. In lande wat 5+ ontvang is, is geen waarborg van werkersregte nie. Lande met dié gradering is onder meer Afghanistan, Burundi, Libië en Palestina, terwyl Bangladesh, China, Egipte, Eswatini, Indië,
Iran, Irak, Nigerië, Saudi-Arabië en Zimbabwe ’n 5-gradering gekry het. Met ’n 1-gradering is onder meer Oostenryk, Denemarke, Ysland, Ierland, Noorweë en Swede. Suid-Afrika het saam met onder meer Switzerland, Kanada, Australië en Namibië ’n 3-gradering, wat gereelde oortredings van werkersregte behels. Baie het verander sedert die aanvang van demokrasie 30 jaar gelede. Tog, die armes word steeds armer, en die nuwe rykes rol in blink, oordadige weelde. Ontvang ’n mens verklarings vanaf staatsinstellings, lyk sake vooruitstrewend. Soos die nuutste regulasies om blootstelling aan geraas en moontlike skadelike toestande by die werkplek uit te skakel of te versag. Dié regulasies is verlede week deur die departement van indiensneming en arbeid bekend gestel. Op die foto’s van sulke geleenthede is volronde glimlagte, goed gevulde ontwerpersklere, en die nuutste en mees moderne toerusting. Tog, beweeg ’n mens op grondvlak, lyk die foto’s wat jy neem anders. Daar kom jy werkers teë wat deur beperkte inkomste en hoër lewenskoste gewurg word; wat nie ’n ander keuse het as om vir ’n skandelike loon en in onveilige omstandighede te werk nie.
Dit terwyl hul eis om billike lone met ’n volgende, en nog ’n volgende, vergadering gesystap word.
Oordink die lewe, beweeg vorentoe

Die afgelope week het my oor ver paaie heen gelei. Baie ver en baie kilometers. Baie dinktyd.
Soms is dit goed om nie bang te wees vir ’n mens se eie gedagtes nie – ’n bietjie die verte in te tuur en te oordink.
Waar jy is, waar jy was, waarheen jy op pad is.
Soms is dit goed om in jou gedagtes uit te kom by die bitter wat in jou lewe is. Soms is dit goed om die pad vorentoe te oordink.
Potpourri
Die wonder van die afgelope week se lang paaie het my by ’n paar logiese, vanselfsprekende gedagtes gebring.
In die eerste plek: ons het regtig ’n mooi land. Die tweede saak wat my opgeval het is hoe mooi opreg die mense van ons land is. Van die petroljoggies wat keer op keer die tenk vol maak, tot die mense by die padversperrings wat jou tien minute op ’n slag laat wag.
Ook die mense wat hul daaglikse taak vervul met vreugde en ’n lag.
Ek besef maar net weer – mense is orals dieselfde. Jy kry die wat vriendelik van geaardheid is en wie se glimlag jou dag maak, en dan kry
Wêreld is nie so groot

Kyk ’n mens na die wêreldkaart, sien ’n mens lande waarvan jy nog nooit gehoor het nie.
Baie mense droom oor dele in ons eie land wat hulle graag sal wil besoek.
Indien hierdie mense se drome wel bewaarheid word, is die waarskynlikheid groot dat hulle nooit die geleentheid sal kry om buite ons land se grense besoek af te lê nie.
Die wêreld voel vir ons ongelooflik groot.
Terselfdertyd is die wêreld klein.
Daar word spottend gesê dat die Noord-Kaap een miljoen inwoners het en dat baie van hulle familie van mekaar is.
Ons loop mense op onverwagte plekke raak.
In baie gevalle is dit mense wat iemand ken wat ons ken of selfs op ’n manier familie van ons is.
Soms kruis mense ons pad op verskeie maniere, maar op verskillende tye en plekke. ’n Paar jaar gelede verwys iemand ’n kliënt na my toe om hom
met iets spesifiek te help.
Ons kommunikeer slegs een keer per jaar wanneer hierdie spesifieke werk vir hom gedoen moet word.
My man stap onlangs by die huis in en kondig aan dat hy uiteindelik iemand gekry het om die boompies in ons tuin te snoei.
“Hy gaan vinnig môre-oggend hier stop om ’n kwotasie vir ons te gee.”
Die volgende oggend ontmoet ek die vreemdeling.
Hy som die werk op wat gedoen moet word.
Hy is baie vriendelik. ’n Innemende geaardheid en baie respekvol.
Die volgende oggend stuur hy die kwotasie vir my man.
Sy naam klink vir my bekend, maar ek weet glad nie waar dit inpas nie.
“Wag, ek kyk gou iets by my kontakte op my selfoon,” sê ek. Ek glimlag.
“Hierdie man is ’n kliënt. Ek het sy naam en van vanaf sy identiteitsdokument onthou, maar nie sy gesig nie.”
Die wêreld is groot – totdat ons orals mense raakloop wat op ’n manier in ons wêreld inpas.
jy die mens vir wie alles moeite is en sleg is. ’n Mooi land en mooi mense. Wat dan nog? Die mooi van ’n dag. Die tyd waarin jy leef is mooi. Elke mens leef in ’n bepaalde tyd.
Die mooi van jou tyd kan by jou verbygaan as jy behep raak met die uitdagings van elke dag.
Geniet die mooi van mense, die land en die tyd waarin jy lewe. Kom dan by jouself ook uit. Oordink jou lewe eerlik en opreg. Wanneer jy langs ver paaie gelei word en jy weet die toekoms onbekend is, doen moeite om die bitter in jou lewe te oordink. Bou vorentoe. Altyd vorentoe.
Koning het skuif oor

Jare gelede was daar in die Louvre-kunsmuseum in Parys, Frankryk, ’n skildery getiteld Skaakmat. Dit het die duiwel uitgebeeld wat smalend oor sy skaakteenstander, ’n jong man, uittroon. Met die laaste skuif van die duiwel plaas hy sy teenstander in skaakmat.
Op ’n dag besoek die Amerikaanse skaakmeester Paul Morphy die museum. Hy bly by dié skildery staan. Dan roep hy uit: “Dis ’n leuen, dis ’n leuen!”
Die kurator kom maan Morphy dat hy moet sagter, maar wil tog nuuskierig weet wat aangaan. Morphy verduidelik: “Kyk, die spel is nie oor nie. Dis ’n leuen, dis nie skaakmat nie: Die koning het nog een skuif oor.”
Die gebeure op Golgota as Jesus gekruisig word, lyk ook na skaakmat, Die bose het oorwin. In die ganse geskiedenis is geen datum so donker soos die dag waaop Jesus op Golgota gekruisig is nie. Nog nooit het die mensdom treffender gedemonstreer waartoe hy in staat
Jesus kreet met ’n hortende asemteug en gebarste lippe: “My God, my God, waarom het U my verlaat?’’ Eenkant staan mense en sê: “Ja, ander kon Hy red, maar Homself kan Hy nie red nie”. Dit is verby, skaakmat, gaan maar huis toe. Die duiwel leun smalend oor die skouer van die mens, alles is verby. Dit is egter alles ’n leuen, want die Koning het nog ’n skuif oor. Op Paassondag sou hierdie Koning opstaan. Ons ken dit. Situasies waarin ons voel ons is in ’n doodloopstraat. Jou lewe is ’n gemors. Jy soek. Klop. Roep. Huil. Lag. Raak kwaad. Jy voel leeg. Jy voel verlore. Dit moet ons vandag duidelik hoor: Die spel is nie verby nie; die Koning het nog ’n skuif. Dit is Goeie Vrydag. Dit is Paassondag. Hy het die dood en hel oorwin. Lewende
is nie. Die ergste wat die mensdom kan doen, is toe volbring. In ’n felle formulering sê die teoloog Wilhelm Korff “Moord op God”. Dit is ook die implikasie van die bekende Duitse Paaslied van Johannes Rist, “O, grote nood, God self is dood.”

Die uiters teleurstellende gedrag van sommiges op ’n vergadering van die Upington-tak van die Noord-Kaap Vigs Forum einde Maart in die Orange River Hotel in Extension waar die bestuursraad byna "geboelie" was, kan geen goedkeuring wegdra nie.
Sulke "stoomroller-gedrag" het nie plek in ’n beskaafde gemeenskap nie.
Die vergadering onder voorsitterskap van past. Herman Cook moes ’n glansryke geleentheid wees, maar het in ’n groot gemors geëindig.
Altesaam 60 lede is genooi, waarvan 30 verdienstelike sertifikate vir hul ondersteunende werk vir die forum ontvang het.
Die personeel wat ontevrede was met die bestuur van die kantoorhoof, Rudolph Saal, het waarskynlik agteraf met ’n wyksraadslid gekonkel, ’n groot getal gemeenskapslede gemobiliseer en die vergadering verwoes.
Die bestuur het die vergadering verdaag, met talle ontevredenes wat aangedring het dat ’n nuwe bestuur onmiddellik verkies moes word.
’n Mens van die departement van sosiale ontwikkeling het verklaar dat die bestuurslede die vergadering verlaat het, en ’n nuwe bestuur is verkies. Dié is ’n regeringsdepartement, wat poog om sosiale ontwikkelingskwessies op nasionale en plaaslike vlak aan te spreek.
Baie gemeenskapslede het hul misnoeë uitgespreek oor die onbeskaafde optrede van sommiges. Past. Cook het besluit om geen stappe te neem of ’n verklaring rondom die gebeure uit te reik nie.
Hoewel die bestuur bewus was van die agteraf-organisasie van personeel, het hulle voortgegaan om die jaarvergadering te reël.

To the north of the property is the T25 gravel road connecting the National Road, N14, with Sesheng in the north. The site is bordered by the Oupos farm to the northeast, the existing Concentrated Solar Photovoltaic (CSP) plant to the west, the Kalahari Golf & Jag development to the south, and the Sishen airfield to the southwest.

After a set meeting with the Sol Plaatje Municipality in Kimberley did not realise on Friday, 11 April, general workers of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) emptied two containers of rubbish in front of the municipal building to show their despair. The group was told to be at the city hall by 09:00, but on arriving there they were informed that the meeting was cancelled. For months now they have had grievances on issues including payment and the supply of personal protective equipment (PPE). These workers feel that their concerns are not heard. Die 24ste jaarlikse Bloemhofdam Bonanza, wat eersdaags sou plaasvind, is tot September uitgestel.
Hewige reën wat oor groot dele van die land neergesak en vloedsituasies in riviere veroorsaak het, het daartoe gelei dat die hengeloewers by die Bloemhofdam heeltemal oorspoel is, sê Eco-Care Trust, organiseerders van The Courier Guy Bloemhofdam Bonanza 2025. Dié hengelbonanza, bekend vir sy groot kontantpryse, sou van 27 April tot 1 Mei plaasvind. Dit is vir 24 tot 28 September herskeduleer, met Erfenisdag op 24 September 'n vakansiedag.

In ’n verklaring sê die organiseerders dat die oewers heeltemal oorspoel is met geen ander keuse as om die geleentheid uit te stel nie.
“Die watervlak is ver oor 100% met die watervlak in die lang grasse en bome langs die oewers. Indien die watervlakke nou sak, gaan die oewers baie modderig wees.”
In ’n skrywe wat die organiseerders einde verlede week van die Noordwes Parke- en Toerismeraad ontvang het, dui die waarnemende bestuurder van die Bloemhofdam-natuurreservaat aan dat die gebied tans nie geskik vir die bonanza is nie.

“Geen terugbetalings sal oorweeg word nie,” lui die verklaring.
GRIEKWAS BLY NOMMER EEN
Die Griekwas is steeds bo-aan die SA Beker-reeks se puntelys ná hul oorwinning van 70-17 oor die Oostelike Provinsie op 11 April in Kimberley. Vanjaar gaan die vier topspanne in die SA Beker-reeks kwalifiseer om aan die Curriebeker-reeks deel te neem. Die Poubloues, bo-aan die lys, het 30 ligapunte, gevolg deur die Pumas (ook 30), Hul volgende wedstryd is op 25 April teen die Pumas in Nelspruit.
Meer sport vir langer tydens Wildeklawer
CHARNÉ KEMP
Die 15de Absa Wildeklawer Skolesporttoernooi wat van 23 April tot 3 Mei in Kimberley plaasvind, is groter as ooit: Vier sportsoorte word by vyf venues gespeel en die byeenkoms duur langer as voorheen.
Cassie Karstens, toernooi-organiseerder, sê seuns- en meisieshokkie word as die vierde sportsoort by rugby, sokker en netbal gevoeg.
Die hokkie is ’n uitnodigingsbyeenkoms waarin 16 NoordKaapse o.19-spanne by die Sol Plaatje-universiteit (SPU) en by St Patrick’s CBC se bane speel. Die nuwe baan by die Kimberley Boys’ High School mag dalk voltooi wees, sê Karstens.
“Oor die afgelope 14 jaar het Wildeklawer gegroei tot een van die grootste internasionale skolesporttoernooie. Vanjaar gaan 5 357 spelers en beamptes deelneem.”
Volgens Karstens is verblyf in Kimberley en omliggende dorpe reeds vol bespreek.
“Dit is weer ’n enorme ekonomiese inspuiting vir die stad, met ouers en belangstellendes wat moet eet en brandstof ingooi. Altesaam 126 spanne van 236 skole neem deel. Van die land se voorste skeidsregters sal wedstryde lei.”
Altesaam 44 Noord-Kaapse spanne neem deel.
Luidens ’n inligtingstuk is die oogmerk om “die grootste skolesporttoernooi in die wêreld aan te bied wat jeugdiges motiveer om op die hoogste vlak aan sport deel
te neem, wat ’n gesonde gees en liggaam bevorder.”
Die toernooi het reeds ’n handvol Springbok-rugbyspelers opgelewer: Faf de Klerk wat in 2009 gespeel het, Handré Pollard in 2011 en 2012, Jesse Kriel in 2012, Manie Libbok in 2013 en 2014, en Damian Willemse in 2016. SuperSport Skolesport sal van die belangrikste rugby- en netbalwedstryde regstreeks op TV uitsaai, en opnames van wedstryde. Verlede jaar het byna 1,5 miljoen kykers dit in Suid-Afrika en die buiteland gekyk.
Die o.13-junior rugby- en netbaltoernooi vind van 23 tot 26 April by die Laerskool Newton plaas, met 58 spanne.
Die Noord-Kaapse uitnodigingstoernooi vir o.19-spanne in rugby, sokker en netbal is van 28 tot 30 April by die Hoërskool Diamantveld, waartydens 28 spanne speel.
Die o.14-, o.15- en o.16-junior rugbytoernooi vind by die B-veld van Diamantveld en Kimberley Boys’ High plaas, asook by die Laerskool Staats. Altesaam 66 spanne neem van 30 April tot 3 Mei hieraan deel. Vanaf 30 April tot 3 Mei vind die senior o.16- en o.19-rugby- en netbaltoernooi met 58 spanne betrokke by Diamantveld plaas. Die o.19-sokkertoernooi met 20 spanne word van 1 tot 3 Mei by die SPU aangebied, terwyl die o.19uitnodigingshokkietoernooi vir seuns en meisies, met 16 spanne, ook in die tydperk by die SPU plaasvind.
