Judgement on the Botmaskop development is expected to be delivered on Wednesday 4 December, but the complainant needs financial support.
The Stellenbosch Interest Group (SIG) turned to the Western Cape High Court to obtain a temporary interdict against further construction work on the building site on the slopes of Botmaskop mountain.
According to SIG chairperson Ronnie Donaldson, the costs of the court case amount to thousands of rands.
The organisation called on Stellenbosch residents and others who are opposed to the development to lend a hand by making a financial contribution.
“The SIG believes that it can win the case, but it will need substantial support from concerned citizens,” the group said in a statement this week.
“SIG has spent over two decades safeguarding the natural and cultural heritage of Botmaskop. Despite initially supporting the development of a small eco-tourism resort under strict conditions, SIG has in recent years faced challenges as unauthorised and expanded development plans that violate environmental and heritage regulations came to the fore.
“Through appeals and legal actions SIG aims to overturn unlawful environmental authorisations, ensure compliance with public participation requirements, and preserve Stellenbosch’s unique landscapes for future generations.
“SIG calls on the general public to join the movement to save
Stellenbosch’s heritage. By donating to SIG, the general public will help achieve these goals.”
In its court application the interest group claims decisions on the project by the Stellenbosch Municipality and Anton Bredell, provincial minister for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, should be set aside.
SIG questions the public participation process of the recent land exchange between the developers and the municipality, along with the environmental authorisation for the project.
An official complaint was also lodged by GOOD councillor Marius van Stade, in which he asked Bredell to investigate the public participation process for the project. According to GOOD they received a response from Bredell on Monday 20 May.
The response read: “The current council has not taken any decision around a so-called ‘land swap’. An application was received but has not been approved by council as the matter
has been published for an open and comprehensive public participation process, which was advertised on 19 April 2024 with a closing date of 17 May 2024.”
As the land swap has since been approved by the Stellenbosch municipal council, Eikestadnuus reached out to Bredell’s office for comment. No feedback has been received.
SIG, as well as Van Stade, allege the public participation process was flawed, as the municipality published the notice for public comment in Die Burger, a forpaid regional title, instead of the free local newspaper, Eikestadnuus
“As GOOD we are concerned residents were not afforded a fair opportunity to participate in the public participation process,” Van Stade told Eikestadnuus in a statement.
SIG maintains all impact studies must be completed before any further construction goes ahead. ) For more information and details on how to donate to the cause, visit the Stellenbosch Interest Group’s page on Facebook.
Onmiddellike opknapping is nodig.

leef. Opvoeding is ’n belangrike deel hiervan.

Wine Analytical Services Laboratory (WASLab), a 100% BEE-owned business based at Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch, was named the third best wine laboratory in the country for 2024 through the South African Wine Laboratory Association. The process of the competition sees labs receive two unknown wine samples monthly for 12 months and submitting 14 results per month. The local lab scored mostly A-results with its submissions, a great accomplishment for an independent wine laboratory, as it is an indication of the submissions being accurate and consistent in results. More than 50 wine labs from across the country participated in the competition. With the award (from left) are WASLab’s Gwendoline February (lab assistant), Rudi Smith (lab technician) and Merecia Smith (lab owner and director).

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) together with the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) will host its “Red Saturday” big bleed this month.
This campaign aims to collectively achieve at least 5 000 units of blood to help alleviate the added pressure on the blood supply countrywide over the busy festive period.
According to Thandi Mosupye, senior manager of marketing, communication and brand at the SANBS, Red Saturday forms part of the SANBS summer campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular blood donations, encourage firsttime donors to make donating a lifelong practice, and educate the public on the reciprocal benefits of giving blood.
Red Saturday focuses on the ultimate Black Friday special. “By donating one unit of blood, you get to save
up to three lives,” said Michelle Vermeulen, head of marketing and public relations at WCBS. Join SANBS and the WCBS on Saturday 30 November from 09:00 to 16:00 any of the following participating malls: Long Beach Mall, Blue Route Mall, Kenilworth Centre, Vangate Mall, N1 City Mall, Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, CapeGate Shopping Centre, Liberty Promenade, Table Bay Mall, Somerset Mall, Whale Coast Mall and Langeberg Mall.
At the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, patients with diabetes are supported from the moment they are diagnosed, with dedicated teams focused not just on medical treatment, but also patient and family education.
World Diabetes Day was observed last Thursday (14 November) with the theme “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps”.
The hospital sees around three to five newly diagnosed patients per month in its diabetes ward following referrals. After admission, young diabetes patients will receive follow-up appointments to visit the diabetes clinic at the hospital.
Most children present with type-1 diabetes, often in a critical condition.
Dr Michelle Carrihill, a paediatric endocrinologist and head of the diabetes and endocrinology department at the hospital, explained: “According to our registry, over the last six years, we have averaged around 50 new patients per year.
“However, this number can vary significantly, with as few as three or as many as 12 new cases in a single month. Our primary concern is that many young patients with diabetes arrive very sick, sometimes requiring ICU admission, which can be traumatic for both the children and their families.”
She stressed the importance
of recognising the warning signs of diabetes in children and seeking urgent help from a clinic.
Common symptoms include sudden bedwetting or frequent urination; increased thirst; weight loss or not picking up weight; difficulty concentrating at school; vision problems; and vomiting.
“If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, please access your clinic for a test,” Carrihill said.
“If you can make a diagnosis before they become very sick, they will be much better off.
Early detection is crucial in preventing severe illness. Our patients don’t need to be very sick when they’re in the ward. They can be newly diagnosed, and it allows for our team to provide education and counselling to the patient and their family.”
The hospital also provides care to children presenting with type 2 diabetes.
“Obesity is a concern in children and children can
develop type 2 diabetes,” said Carrihill. “We are seeing more type 1 diabetic children presenting earlier because they’re overweight or obese and need more insulin, which their pancreas can’t produce. Some of our patients are as young as six or seven years old. About 10% of our patients present with type 2 diabetes. We are also seeing cases of ‘double diabetes’, where children have both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.”
One of the most important factors in reducing the risk of childhood diabetes, health experts agree, is early detection, treatment and education. “Type 1 diabetes is autoimmune with a genetic risk and is not preventable at this stage. It’s important to understand that it doesn’t happen because anyone did anything wrong,” Carrihill explained.
“Prevention begins in utero with healthy pregnant mothers. Antenatal care should include education on healthy eating, which continues with healthy feeding and breastfeeding after birth which can reduce the risk of diabetes. Families need to be educated on nutritious meals and the dangers of processed foods, starting in schools and extending beyond.”
Similarly, Tygerberg Hospital offers a comprehensive service to children and adults at its diabetes clinics.
Visit your local clinic if you have questions or concerns about your little ones.

With less than four days remaining until the 24 November deadline, Eskom is urging all prepaid electricity customers to update their meters immediately.
Meters still using KRN1 (Key Revision Number 1) will no longer accept tokens after Sunday 24 November.
This means once the current credit is depleted customers will lose power, and the meter will become inoperable, necessitating a meter replacement that could cost up to R12 000, which the customer will have to pay.
“Customers with meters still on KRN1 have likely not purchased electricity for more than six months or may be using unauthorised tokens bought from criminal syndicates,” the electricity utility stated. “To prevent the meter from becoming inoperable, losing power and incurring replacement costs it is critical that all customers, including those who have not purchased electricity in the last six months or more, buy electricity tokens from authorised vendors by Sunday [24 November].”
Customers will receive two sets of 20digit codes to recode and update meters. How to check and recode your meter:
. To verify if it is ready, enter 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on your meter keypad. If it shows 1 or 1.2, your meter still needs to be recoded. If it shows 2 or 2.2, your meter is updated and requires no further action.
. To complete the recoding: Enter the first 20 digits of your recode token, then the second 20 digits. Finally, enter the 20digit token from your latest power purchase to recharge your meter.

geskuif is.
Curro Holdings is partnering with Tennis South Africa (TSA) to bring two International Tennis Federation (ITF) men’s and women’s tournaments to the Van der Stel courts in Stellenbosch.
This continues the successful Curro Centre Court Series held at Curro Hillcrest in June and July. Taking place from Sunday 1 to Sunday 15 December these are Men15 (M15) and Women15 (W15) events, with the first tournament running from 1 to 8 December and the second from 8 to 15 December. Each category boasts prize money of $15 000 per week, with an overall pool of $60 000.
As the tournaments form part of the men’s and women’s ITF tour, the series allows some of the world’s best up-andcoming players to improve their rankings through earning points for their performances. As in Hillcrest, courtside is expected to be packed with spectators in Stellenbosch.
“There is a healthy number of South African men and women playing in these tournaments, many based overseas, who relish the opportunity to
return home and compete against world class competition,” says Cindy van der Merwe, portfolio manager at Curro Sport
The SA contingent is strong, led by SA Davis Cup team players Alec Beckley, Leo Matthysen and Phillip Henning, winner of week one of the series in Hillcrest.
Adding some spice to the men’s draw is Leo Borg, son of Swedish tennis legend and fivetime Wimbledon winner, Bjorn Borg. Top ranked junior player, teenager Connor Doig from Westville, will also want to impress.
In the women’s draw, SA’s hope will be pinned on Isabella Kruger and teenager Jahnie van Zyl, a top junior player.
Kruger, daughter of the late Springbok rugby legend Ruben, had an up-and-down performance at Curro Hillcrest, winning the second week’s women’s title but falling early in the other two weeks.
“This is a rare opportunity for people to experience international tennis in SA,” Van der Merwe adds. “The standard is exceptionally high and those who take the time to come and soak up the action will be richly rewarded.”

The Fairtree DP World Cannondale MTB racing team was established to help young locals develop into keen, talented mountain bike riders, and if Luyanda Tobigunya’s journey is an example of this aim the team has a winning formula.
The team was established in 2008 and the 30-year-old was one of the first riders to join. “I was living in Khayamandi and saw the guys on the BMX bikes calling themselves Young Guns, and I wanted to join their Songo team,” he recalled.
For Tobigunya, part of the joy of mountain biking is that he gets to see new places. According to Chris Norton, head coordinator of the Stellenbosch MTB team, he showed promise from the start. “Since [joining] he has won Exarro title at both the Cape Epic and Wines2Whales. In 2023 he acquired his Western Province and South African colours, and took part in the world champs in Scotland. He is one of the most popular guides, and is a great example of dedication and excellence, which serves as a great example to younger riders.”
Tobigunya’s dedication shows, with the cyclist hitting the trails on most days. He enjoys races through
Coetzenburg and Boschendal, but his favourite trail is Botmaskop.
Tobigunya was one of the three riders from the team, along with Damon Terblanche, Ziandro Jordaan, who received WP colours this season. He also ended third in the sub vet men category for the provincial crosscountry league.
In the gruelling Cape Epic, Tobigunya and teammate Jan Montshioa finished 21st in the amateur men’s ride and 89th overall. At the recent Wines2Whales the duo left the rest of the riders in their dust. They ended first overall in amateur men’s category and 15th overall. “I performed well this year because I was focused,” Tobigunya said. “I also have a great coach and the training programme for training six days a week and resting on Mondays.”
Cycling changed his life for the better and helped him stay out of trouble.
Norton said it was only due to the support of the team’s key sponsors, Fairtree, DP World and Cannondale, that the team continues to change lives.
Tobigunya cannot imagine his life without cycling and is already focused on his next goal. “My aim now is just to get faster, faster and faster, right to the finish line. There is nothing else for now. I’m focusing on training for the Cape Epic to race for the amateur jersey.”
