RECENTLY, the second edition of the annual educational recognition event, hosted by the Friends of the New Brighton Library in partnership with the Iphulo leeNkonde Foundation, celebrated the exceptional academic achievements of Grade 12 learners.
The ceremony, held at the New Brighton Library, was aimed at inspiring and recognising learners for their successes during their final Grade 11 exams last year.
The Chairperson of the Friends of the New Brighton Library, Stan Mosia, confirmed the significance of the event: “The purpose of this function is primarily to recognise and inspire this year’s Grade 12 learners for their achievements during their final Grade 11 exams for the previous year. It is an effort to reward their hard work and motivate them to continue striving for excellence in their final school year.”
Initially, the event focused on four high schools within New Brighton. This year, however, its reach expanded to include four additional schools from Kwazakhele, Zwide, Walmer, and Motherwellincreasing the number of deserving learners celebrated.
Mosia explained, “Last year, the initiative only included four high schools from New Brighton, and the top five overall performers were selected based on their Grade 11 final exams. This year, we welcomed more learners from
additional schools to participate in this growing annual event.”
Learners were selected for recognition by submitting authentic reports, which were reviewed by a panel of retired teachers from the Iphulo leeNkonde Foundation. Each recognised learner received commemorative badges, symbolic of their outstanding performance.
“The badges stand as a reward and an honour to the learners, recognising their effort and excellence. This gesture is to motivate them to keep aiming for success,”
said Mosia.
Last year’s event keynote speaker, Dr Sipho Sishi, shared an inspiring message. The PE Express reported that Sishi, whose educational journey began in New Brighton and led him to Fort Hare University and Medunsa, resonated deeply with the audience. His speech at the time emphasised the importance of staying focused on the path to success.
Messages of support came from several esteemed individuals, including Malizole “Banks” Gwax-
ula (Ubuntu Pathways, Zwide), Ward 14 Councillor, Mbulelo Qupe, Busi Mbiyo (representing libraries), Mbulelo Nzo (author and composer), and Elva Koetaan-Van Zyl (NMM Older Persons Forum). Their words of encouragement highlighted the importance of education and community support in driving learners toward their goals.
The event owes much of its success to community-driven crowd-funding, as well as critical
support from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Libraries section.
“While some donations went into providing basic lunch packs for the learners, the libraries section has been instrumental in providing educational materials,” Mosia explained. “We are also grateful for the contributions from various individuals, local businesses, and professionals within the community.”
Despite its success, the organisers face challenges, as the Iphulo leeNkonde Foundation, registered as an NPO, does not yet receive funding from the Department of Social Development. Looking ahead, Mosia expressed hopes for the project’s continued growth: “As this initiative gains momentum, we plan to follow up on the post-matric results of these achievers. We want to ensure their further enrolment in tertiary institutions is fully supported and monitored throughout. These learners will also be encouraged to serve as ambassadors within their respective schools.”
The Friends of the New Brighton Library and Iphulo leeNkonde Foundation remain committed to hosting this annual function as part of the National Libraries Week programme, striving to bring the community together and invest in the young minds that will shape tomorrow. “This event reflects our dedication to creating paths to success for our learners while fostering a spirit of achievement and community collaboration,” Mosia concluded.
NEWTON Park continues to face ongoing complaints about the state of its power infrastructure, as residents on Handsworth Street and Peter Graham Avenue expressed mounting frustration with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s handling of repairs.
In October 2023, Handsworth Street experienced a major power outage and severe voltage surges that affected residents between 1st and 2nd Avenues. The incident, while temporarily resolved by the Electricity Department, left a trail of incomplete work and unsafe conditions, sparking ongoing complaints about the condition in which the streets were left.
Ward 7 Councillor, Brendon Pegram, recalled the chaos surrounding the initial incident: “I remember that day vividly. I stood outside in the rain while the teams excavated the residents’ verges, trying to locate the fault. By the end, most properties were left with heaps of dug-up soil, and the area was in complete disarray.”
According to Pegram, repeated attempts to escalate the matter were met with little accountability.
“I made direct contact with the then Executive Director of Electricity and Energy at the time, asking for urgent intervention. Shortly after that, I was blocked - completely cut off from further communication. That was the level of responsiveness we dealt with.”
Over the months following the outage, Pegram said he sent numerous correspondences to electricity supervisors, acting city managers, and executive directors, requesting site meetings and progress updates.
However, residents’ concerns about hazardous, dug-up verges and incomplete reinstatement work continued to be ignored.
“Many residents grew so fed up with the inaction that they began to cover the holes themselves,” said Pegram.
“Some spent their own money to restore the verges and redo aspects of their properties that had been damaged. It’s unacceptable that hard-working, rate-paying citizens were forced to shoulder a burden created by the municipality’s negligence.”
The frustrations reached new heights recently when a similar situation unfolded on Peter Graham Avenue. The Electricity Department was called to address an issue but once again left verges on both sides of the street in complete disarray.
Adding to the concerns is a temporary overhead cable that stretches precariously across the road from one tree to another.
Describing the situation, Pegram said,
“I raised concerns about this ridiculous temporary connection, and their solution was to come out, climb the tree, and secure the cable higher using cable ties. Is this what the department considers a permanent fix? How can we trust them to address these critical infrastructure issues when they continue to take such an unprofessional approach?”
Requests to replace the temporary cables with a permanent connection, including one at 9 Handsworth Street, have gone unanswered despite Pegram’s repeated follow-ups.
“This department is dragging its feet.
It’s frustrating, and it’s clear the administration is failing the very residents they are supposed to serve.”
The unresolved situations have not only inconvenienced residents but also created significant safety hazards.
Exposed trenches, unstable terrain, and hanging overhead cables pose risks to pedestrians and motorists, and Pegram notes the growing concern for children’s safety within the area.
“The affected residents are tired of this level of incompetence,” said Pegram.
“They aren’t asking for favours. They are paying rates and taxes as responsi -
ble members of the city, and they deserve verges restored to their original state and safe, permanent electrical connections.”
His concerns also highlight larger issues of governance and accountability within the municipality.
“What the municipality offers to its residents - those who fund its functioning through their hard-earned money - is nothing short of disgraceful,” Pegram declared.
Looking to the future, residents and their ward councillor are urging the municipality to take immediate action to resolve these crises. Transparency, communication, and speed in addressing the residents’ frustrations are demanded to restore trust and improve service delivery.
“Our people need to see tangible progress,” Pegram asserted. “We need agents of change to step up within the municipality to ensure the community does not continue to suffer under bureaucracy and inefficiency.”
After numerous attempts by the PE Express to get a comment, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had not responded at the time of going to print on Monday.
THE movement Hall in Parkside, Gqeberha, buzzed with activity over the weekend leading up to Eid-ul-fitr, the recent Islamic celebration which marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Community volunteers packed close to 600 hampers which were distributed to needy Muslim families in Nelson Mandela Bay. These Eid hampers were made possible by those who fasted and paid their obligatory fitra, a donation of a specified amount which must be paid before the Eid prayer.
The South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF) of the Nelson Mandela Bay plays a key role in the collection and distribution of fitra and zakah, the required two and a half percent of a Muslim person’s wealth.
Nationally, SANZAF served over a million meals to needy families to enjoy before they commenced the day’s fast and to break the fast at sunset. The organisation also distributed close to 30 tons of dates and more than
60 000 Ramadan hampers. In Gqeberha, SANZAF called upon the community to assist with the fitra hamper packing and distribution.
“It was heart-warming to see so many people, including the kids, come together to contribute. The sense of community was overwhelming and it’s amazing to know that these hampers make a difference on Eid day for those who need it most,” said Moulana Salmaan Fredericks, SANZAF (Nelson Mandela Bay) chairperson.
In addition to Ramadan and Eid food hamper distributions, SANZAF’s mandate is to ensure poverty alleviation amongst the Muslim community. The organisation’s stance is to teach a man to fish rather than give him the fish. To this end, 29 students are studying at various tertiary institutions this year with the support of a SANZAF bursary. Meanwhile, several emerging entrepreneurs are on a business incubation programme, while others are on self-help training programmes.

WHAT began as a typical rainy school day turned into an extraordinary event for learners at Paterson High School recently, thanks to an inspiring Career Day organised in partnership with Standard Bank.
The event introduced learners to diverse career options and cutting-edge technology, while offering opportunities beyond their community’s socio-economic challenges.
The highlight of the day was Pepper, a humanoid robot brought in by Standard Bank and Kunda Disrupt, to showcase the future of artificial intelligence. “At first, I was shocked, but it made me realise this is what the future looks like,” said the school’s Head Boy, Oswin Whitebooi, who was one of the lucky students chosen to ask Pepper a question.
After the assembly, the learners explored a buzzing career expo featuring over 45 exhibitors, including Nelson Mandela University, Rhodes University, and the East Cape Training Centre. Grade 12 learners and their parents eagerly engaged with representatives, receiving valuable advice on post-school options. The event concluded with a dramatic rescue demonstration by the Eastern Cape Emergency Medical Team, captivating the learners, and emphasising the importance of careers in emergency services.
Deputy Principal, Kenneth Prins, reflected, “This event was invaluable in showing our learners what’s possible beyond their community and giving them hope and direction for the future.” A Life Orientation teacher, Nadeera Pietersen, said, “It was a huge success, from the assembly with Pepper to the learners interacting with the robot, and ending with the Eastern Cape Emergency Medical Team’s rescue demonstration.”

AFTER showing the junior field a clean pair of heels at the Two Oceans half-marathon recently, teenage road-running sensation, Abbie Mitchell, took on an elite field at the Absa Run Your City 10km in Gqeberha this past Sunday, April 13.
The 18-year-old from Nelson Mandela University announced her arrival on the national scene in emphatic style when she stormed to the finish line at the University of Cape Town 11 minutes ahead of her closest challenger (Elge Coetzee from Phobians). Although a touch short of her personal best, Mitchell held a pace of around fourand-a-half minutes per kilometre throughout on the up-and-down course, to clock an impressive 1:34:39.
While the Madibaz runner has set herself several ambitious goals for the year, breaking the 90-minute barrier in the 21.1km and dipping under 40 minutes in the 10km top her list. Even if it was just over a minute off her personal best time, set at the Buffs half in Buffalo City earlier this season, she ranks her Two Oceans triumph as the highlight of her fledgling career.
FRAMESBY could start their campaign at this year’s Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival on a spectacular note.
The Gqeberha side will be in action in the main match tomorrow on the first day of this popular festival in Durban.
It will be a tough assignment for Framesby. They take on a team that has caught the eye with solid performances early in the season, Westville Boys’ High. Westville is one of four KwaZulu-Natal teams, there are 12 first-team schools in total, at the Festival and will have strong crowd support to spur them on.
“I was still really happy with it. The course was tough with several big hills, so it was rewarding,” she said. Mitchell was inspired by the atmosphere around the course. “It was my first Two Oceans half, and I loved it. There were so many supporters along the way.” The course wound its way through well-known Cape Town suburbs, such as Wynberg and Constantia, and included the leg-breaking climb up Southern Cross Drive. Mitchell’s strategy was simply to maintain the best pace she could, slowing down on the hills while taking time back on the downhills. At a certain point in the mass-participation race she suspected that she was leading the junior field. “I could see runners ahead of me, but no female juniors. That’s when I figured I might be in first.”

Old Grey FC defend league title
That reality only really sank in after she had crossed the finish line. The first-year BCom student gravitated towards longer distances from early on, starting her jour-
ney with the 800m at school meetings. “In high school (at Pearson), I moved up to the 1500m and only began racing longer road distances such as the 10km and 21.1km at the start of 2024.”
With a statement performance behind her and clear goals for the future, Mitchell’s legs will no doubt do plenty more talking. Thereafter it is another shot at the half-marathon when she turns out for the Madibaz at the University Sports South Africa competition, held in conjunction with the Wally Hayward Marathon in Pretoria on May 1.
STREAM A log leaders, Old Grey FC, successfully defended their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (SAFA NMB) Hollywoodbets Regional League title after defeating Stream B log leaders, Khipu Major Chiefs Sports Club, 3-1 in the top-eight positional games held at SAPS Main Fields in Mount Croix on Saturday.
Old Grey FC, the reigning champions from the SAFA NMB 2023/24 league season, defied expectations. Their victory was fueled by head coach, Wayne Iveson, and their seasoned players who contributed significantly throughout the 2024/25 season.
OGFC’s veteran skipper, Xolisa Pa Sifunda, opened the scoring in the first half, leaving Chiefs goalkeeper Sive Gqezengele well beaten. Chiefs briefly silenced the jubilant crowd when Ayabonga Koli found the back of the net, beating OGFC’s goalkeeper, Lwando Nkohla. In the second half, OGFC’s assistant skipper, Axolile Messi Kapo, struck their second goal to increase the lead to 2-1. Striker Yamkela Va sealed the victory with a decisive third goal. OGFC claimed a 3-1 victory over the Chiefs. Real Celtics FC secured third place in the league after a penalty shootout victory over Highlands Spurs, whose match ended in a goalless draw, leaving Spurs in fourth position. Royal Bucks FC finished fifth following their 2-1 victory over Real Madrid FC, who ended in sixth position.
Red Lions FC defeated Shining Stars FC 3-2, finishing the season in seventh position, while Shining Stars FC ended in eighth. OGFC will proceed to the provincial playoffs in Jeffreys Bay, with the date to be announced shortly. The two finalists of the provincial playoffs will compete in the ABC Motsepe Provincial League during the 2025/26 season .
Mabayibone Strikers FC take WAFA Premier top spot
THE race is heating up in the Walmer Football Association (WAFA) Premier League as Mabayibone Strikers FC claim the top spot on the log table, effective Saturday.
Mabayibone, one of WAFA’s strongest teams, overtook Young Chiefs FC after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Eleven Experience FC at Walmer Community Fields on Saturday. As it stands, Mabayibone has accumulated 16 points from seven games.
Meanwhile, Chiefs dropped three valuable points after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat against Walmer Stars FC at Walmer Community Fields on Saturday. Chiefs were also held to a goalless draw by Young Cosmos the previous Saturday.
These results have left Chiefs trailing Mabayibone by two points.
Other league title contenders, Ghetto Stars FC, enjoyed an easy 3-1 triumph over bottom-placed Peace United FC. Currently, Stars occupy third place on the log table with 14 points, while United have yet to register a point since the start of the season. Another struggling team, Valley United FC, suffered a
3-1 defeat to Young Cosmos FC at Walmer Community Fields on Saturday. Valley United has managed only one win this season.
Morning Stars FC fell 3-0 to fellow title chasers Golden Heroes at Walmer Community Fields on Sunday. Heroes are now trailing Mabayibone by just a single point.

The match could be one of the highlights of the Festival for the spectators. Westville plays an enterprising style of rugby, using their mobile forwards and speedy backs to test the opposition’s defence.
In their early season matches, Framesby has also shown signs of getting their outside backs involved.
Both sides have skilful backline players capable of scoring wonderful tries. The attacking fullback, Zekhethelo Siyaya, will be a key player for Westville, but the Framesby backline also looks dangerous with Jaiden Brewis, Damien Witbooi and Cole Hilpert ready to fire.
In their second match at the Festival on Saturday, Framesby again faces a team known for playing running rugby, Peterhouse from Zimbabwe.
Framesby plays against EG Jansen on Monday on the last day of the Festival. EG Jansen traditionally plays a more structured game and this encounter could turn into a forward battle. There is always lots of interest in the Kearsney Festival and it gives the Framesby players a huge opportunity to catch the eye of important people with good performances.
Framesby will start the festival full of confidence after an easy victory at home in Gqeberha over the Kariega visitors Daniel Pienaar on Saturday. After leading 28-5 at halftime, Framesby eventually sealed the deal 52-12 in the windy conditions.
Westville had a much tougher match. They had to work really hard to beat Northwood 16-14 and will probably take it easy in their buildup to the Framesby match this week.
Five Gqeberha players, three from Alexander Road and two from Victoria Park, can look forward to touring Italy and the Netherlands in October this year. They were included in the Rhino tour squad which was picked after the Patriot Sports Festival at De Kuilen High School in Cape Town.
The players are Mateus Campos, Zukisa Xoshombe, Lizole Ntengo (all Alex), Joshua Grobler and Usi Vokwana (both VP).
Eastern Province has also started with trial matches to take a look at the available talent in the respective sub-unions. PE North have already put in some hard work on the practice field and a match against Gelvan Academy. They will face Ithembelihle next.
