A RISE in unemployment from 22 3% to 26 4% in Nelson Mandela Bay is no comfort for job seekers already struggling to put food on the table

Figures released for the second quarter of 2025, from April to June, in the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) have revealed that Nelson Mandela Bay, which generates over a third of the Eastern Cape's GDP, has suffered the single largest employment collapse in the province, signalling deep trouble for the entire Eastern Cape economy In a statement on 12 August, Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature Vicky Knoetze said that the Eastern Cape simply cannot afford to lose more of its already dwindling workforce

"The Eastern Cape cannot afford to watch more young people leave the province in search of work elsewhere," she said "Reforming local government to deliver infrastructure, cutting red tape for small businesses, investing in energy stability, and tackling rural safety head-on are

essential for rebuilding economic confidence "

The figures revealed that whilst the Eastern Cape's unemployment rose just 0 2% from the first to the second quarter, provincially, 89,000 additional jobs were created

However, the additional jobs are likely reflecting casual seasonal jobs and not long-term permanent jobs

"These jobs are most likely to be seasonal, with citrus harvesting starting in April, resulting in more temporary jobs created in the agricultural sector that disappear at the end of the season," Knoetze shared "In contrast, the job losses in the Metro are most likely to be more permanent in nature "

She added that the latest statistics are also reflecting the first shockwaves of the 25% US tariff on vehicles and components, which is "hammering" the Metro's automotive sector and its supply chain

"Notably, the figures released do not fully reflect the impact of the general 30% US tariff increases, which only really came into effect in August, and which will most likely be felt in the Q3 and Q4 statistics," Knoetze add-

ed

"The Metro's official unemployment rate surged from 22 3% to 26 4%, and the expanded rate ballooned from 27 1% to 35% "

Speaking to the PE Express on condition of anonymity, a 32-year-old father of one with a background in finance shared that he has been struggling to find a job for over a year

"I've been unemployed since April last year," he said "My background is in finance, and it has been a struggle to find a job You apply, but you never receive feedback, so you wait, and eventually, the hope kills you "

When questioned on whether he was searching for a job in other provinces, the father said he hoped to stay close to his family, as he had previously worked away from home

"I don't want to move because I've mostly worked out of town "

Meanwhile, he has been sending his CV to job vacancies, including government posts, in East London and Qonce (King William's Town)

"You receive no response, especially from government jobs I have a BCom degree and a postgraduate qualification in financial planning, and at this point, I

am willing to take any job

"I m even resorting to applying for driving posts," he shared

The job search is taking its toll, but he is hopeful that a door of opportunity will open

"It makes a person feel so despondent just to get an interview I haven't had any interviews for a few months "

He shared the fears of neighbours who were facing job losses at the Goodyear plant in Kariega

"They are so worried and don't know what to do when they lose their job With a large number of people losing their jobs, it is going to be even tougher to find a job "

Meanwhile, a couple are selling banana loaves to make ends meet

Elton Seale, who has been unemployed since 2019, sells banana bread at the traffic lights opposite Spar Figtree every week

He and his wife, Vanessa, are both on disability grants

"We get a disability grant at the moment, since I was hospitalised and had a nervous breakdown," said Elton Elton, who used to be a tiler, had a bicycle accident which caused a head injury, he shares

"Since COVID-19 came, I couldn't find any tiling work because people didn't want anyone in their houses I was on and off with subcontractors and then booked off for medical reasons since 2019 "

Meanwhile, Vanessa, who has been wheelchair-bound since 2022, is on chronic medication and dependent on Elton

"We use our grant for rent, water and electricity, so the extra money from the banana loaves is for the day-to-day chronic medication and the food," she said

"I used to be a care worker with cancer patients, and due to all the heavy lifting, my vertebrae in my back became damaged " She also suffers from osteoporosis

By selling the banana loaves, the couple tries to make do with their limited resources

"Most of the time we sell all the banana loaves we bake; people are really good to us," said Vanessa

The banana loaves cost R50 each, weigh around 1 5kg and are freshly baked

"We can't thank God enough for the opportunity to be able to bake this bread and for Elton to sell it," Vanessa concluded

IN a proactive approach to reduce plastic pollution, ASEZ, a university student volunteer group affiliated with the World Mission Society Church of God, hosted a cleanup at King’s Beach on 10 August

Its name reflects the slogan “Save the Earth from A to Z,” and the group carries out crime prevention, climate change response, community service and disaster relief

The cleanup campaign,

which forms part of the “Zero Plastic 2040” initiative, saw 30 ASEZ members, along with their families and friends, pick up various types of waste including plastic cups, straws, plastic bags and boxes

Over the course of an hour, approximately 37 municipal refuse bags of waste were collected

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality welcomed ASEZ’s volunteer efforts, supporting the event with 100 refuse bags

and 100 pairs of gloves

Ward 2 Councillor Sean Tappan, who participated in the cleanup, said everyone needs to play their part for a clean environment

“Plastic pollution is terrible all over the world,” he said

“We need to find ways of reaching the community and spreading the word that pollution and plastic are endangering our environment ”

Every year, 280 million tonnes of short-lived plastic

waste are discarded and end up in oceans, soil and air

According to an ASEZ representative, small daily habits can bring great change to the environment

“We hope many more will join us King’s Beach is a haven for local citizens to enjoy swimming, surfing, and sunbathing on its golden sands ”

Nelson Mandela Bay University student, Thethelela Sogayise (20), said it was wonderful to participate in the cleanup

“I feel really great to be part of this campaign because, through it, we are one step closer to saving the earth

We, university students, play a crucial role in this campaign because we are the future leaders of this world ”

The international community predicts that with strong reduction efforts, environmental leakage of plastic could be nearly eliminated by 2040

To help achieve this goal, ASEZ carries out awareness-raising activities such as forums and seminars, cleanups, street campaigns, and signature drives across many countries, including South Africa

NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT

KNOWN for her bravery and courage after surviving a brutal attack in 1994, Gqeberha rape survivor and inspirational speaker, Alison Botha, is once again showing resilience after recovering from a ruptured brain aneurysm

"Back in 1994, I had my first near-death experience," she shared during a TikTok video posted on Monday, 11 August

In 1994, Botha was left for dead when she was attacked, raped and stabbed 37 times in bushes near her home

Addressing supporters on her TikTok account yesterday, Botha detailed the days leading up to her emergency brain surgery last year, which she described as a second near-death experience

"In 2023, they unexpectedly released the men who attacked me back in 1993/1994, and I spiralled into depression and anxiety," she shared "I tried to go on with work, travelling and talks, but it had been hard "

She explained how "2024 was a tough year" and that waking up with a headache one morning was not unusual

"I've suffered with headaches ever since my attack," she explained while making a slicing motion on the left side of her throat

"During my attack, this muscle has always caused me problems with headaches and we thought it was just that, a bad migraine "

However, later that day, Botha's son reportedly found her collapsed on the bathroom floor

"After a day or two, I was taken to the hospital where they did

scans and discovered I had a burst brain aneurysm," she shared Botha was transported to Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, where she reportedly underwent

multiple brain surgeries last year "I lost my vision, I couldn't speak, I couldn't move, and I couldn't turn myself over," she recounted

The support of her loved ones, however, kept her hanging on and fighting to pull through "It was tough, they (the family) were told that I wasn't going

TransportinggoodsacrossAfricastillachallenge

WHETHER goods are transported by road, rail, or sea, each mode presents its own set of challenges

Speaking at the Exporters Eastern Cape breakaway session during the NAACAM Show in Gqeberha last week, Transnet Group Chief Executive Officer, Michelle Phillips, emphasised that Nelson Mandela Bay remains a key focus area for Transnet

She highlighted the significance of the region’s automotive sector, where a full cycle is completed with both components and finished products being imported and exported

Her message to the automotive industry was clear: “We understand the cost of logistics failure, and we are not standing still We are actively investing, collaborating, and reforming to build a resilient, high-performance logistics backbone that can carry South African-made components to global markets competitively and reliably,” said Phillips

She added that Transnet is exploring public-private partnerships to re-establish rail corridors and improve efficiency to and from South African ports

Following her address, a panel of industry experts discussed the broader challenges of transporting goods across Africa and into global markets

The panel included Sharon Modiba, Chief Economist at the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC); Tony Pienaar, Departmental

Executive of Supply Chain Management at ISUZU Motors South Africa (IMSAf) and Sharon Tinkhof, Group Commercial and Imports Director for Sub-Saharan and Eastern Africa at the C Steinweg Group

The panel emphasised the logistical difficulties of doing business in Africa Tinkhof raised concerns about the long transit times for road freight

“Exports cannot rely on a single mode of transport,” she said, supporting Phillips’s view that privatising rail could enhance efficiency She added that digital systems could significantly improve border processes in African countries

“For example, it can take between 45 and 60 days for a haulier to deliver goods to the Democratic Republic of Congo,” she

noted “And around ten days just to clear cargo at some African borders ” Pienaar pointed out that while African countries are investing in port infrastructure in line with their automotive growth strategies, challenges, such as distance to markets, remain “Africa presents a growth opportunity We must build partnerships with ports in the coun-

to make it," she shared "People didn't give up on me, and I didn't ever give up on me "

After several brain surgeries, Botha spent time at a rehab facility where she had to relearn how to sit, walk, eat and shower

"I'm grateful for how I recovered; once again, it is miraculous "

She extended her gratitude to every individual for their support and donations, of more than R332,000, that went towards her medical care

Parole revoked

The parole of Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger, who were convicted of Alison Botha's attack in 1997, has since been revoked

The Minister of Correctional Services, Dr Pieter Groenewald, cancelled the parole earlier this year

In a statement on 4 February, he said: "This decision was made in accordance with the Correctional Services Act, which empowers the Minister to cancel parole for individuals sentenced to life imprisonment

"The Minister's primary consideration is the imperative of protecting and securing the community, particularly in instances where acts of violence against women and children have been committed "

Meanwhile, in a statement on 13 May, Acting Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services, Janho Engelbrecht, shared that the department had received notice of litigation from Botha's legal representatives, indicating that there had been no victim consultation during the parole process

tries we export to,” he said Modiba pointed out that only 59 9% of South Africa’s manufactured exports currently go into Africa signalling room for growth in a continent eager for locally made products She also stressed the importance of fair trade, citing anti-dumping regulations and the need to strengthen cooperation with African trade partners

Alison Botha is recovering from a ruptured brain aneurysm.

AN A-level student on a life-changing bursary at a top UK boarding school is looking to break boundaries in the professional cricketing world

Caleb Falconer (18) from Gqeberha moved to England to attend Millfield School in Somerset, on a bursary place for the Sixth Form

After an exceptional two-year innings at Millfield, Caleb is now going on to play cricket at Middlesex County Cricket Club (MCCC), where he has signed an academy contract and hopes to sign his first professional contract in the next year

Tipped for a great future, Caleb has been marked as a standout talent as England looks towards its latest crop of promising young cricketers

"Cricket was in my life from as early as I can remember," says Caleb, who from the age of two, would follow his father, Stuart, an elite cricket coach, to sessions at schools and clubs around his hometown of Gqeberha

"Throughout my childhood, I tagged along to the sessions my dad would be taking and looked to pick up whatever I could That's where my love of cricket was born, and I went from there

"During those formative years, Caleb looked up to iconic South African batsman, AB de Villiers, widely renowned as one of the finest batters of his generation

"For any young cricketer growing up in South Africa at that time, they would all say AB de Villiers is the player that inspires them," Caleb claims

Fifteen years on from his formative cricketing experiences, the talented all-rounder was the 2024 recipient of the Middlesex CCC Youth Player of the Year Award

That year, Caleb struck a mammoth 1,062 runs for Middlesex U18s, including a sublime 224

against Sussex

These performances earned him Middlesex Senior 2nd XI opportunities, which he took with both hands, registering a century against Lancashire CCC in June 2024

Caleb continued that form into this year, earning himself an England Invitational XI selection to play against England Young Lions and the India U19 teams in a triangular tournament

Caleb scored 74 on debut against England Lions, and hopes to represent the Senior England Men's Cricket team in the future

Scholarships and bursaries enable access to Millfield for talented children who would benefit from an education at the school, by offering fee discounts of up to 100%

Bursaries at Millfield, funded by the Millfield Foundation, not only cover fees but also include uniform and sports kit, travel to and from school and essential items

Around 95% of Caleb's fees at Millfield are covered through both a bursary and a cricket scholarship

Before Millfield, Caleb attended Grey High School Despite excelling in a variety of sports, at the age of 16, Caleb was looking to specialise in cricket and find an environment where his precocious talent could be nurtured, with Millfield s track record of producing top-level cricketers standing out

Caleb and his family moved over to the UK, basing themselves in Berkshire, while Caleb joined the school on a full boarding place, enabling him to make the most of Millfield s comprehensive sporting provision

A full boarding place at Millfield costs £58,854 per year

Millfield Director of Cricket, Mark Garaway, said it has been a privilege to work with Caleb

over the past two years

“He is an exceptional talent, as demonstrated through his performances for both Millfield and Middlesex CCC throughout the 2024 and 2025 seasons," he said

"His time here has been filled with moments that will be long remembered

"Beyond his ability on the field, Caleb is a remarkable individual and a natural leader

“He has earned the respect of staff, coaches, and fellow students alike, who have all admired his maturity, composure and calmness, especially in high-pressure situations These are the hallmarks of a truly great leader We are all excited to follow Caleb as he takes the next step in his cricketing journey with Middlesex CCC, and we wish him every success in the professional game "

Caleb commented on the level of facilities and coaching at Millfield that "does not exist in any other school"

"I joined knowing how much the offer here would help my cricket, and it lived up to my expectations; it's an awesome place to pursue your sport," he said "With the level of support Millfield offered me, you can't help but improve dramatically I really can't fault any of the sports staff or teachers, particularly the Director of Cricket, Mr Garaway, and my Housemaster, Mr Speyers They had such a significant impact on my Millfield journey "

Caleb is part of Middlesex CCC's Contracted Academy Players Group, where he will look to continue his cricketing development Following his recovery from ankle surgery that he underwent this summer, Caleb is hoping to break into the Middlesex First XI and join cricketing stars such as Kane Williamson and Leus du Plooy for the 2026 season

Three-legracingchallenge settobeginatFairview

THE Fairview stables can't wait for the Nelson Mandela Bay Racing Poly Challenge to start

The hard work has been done to prepare the horses for the upcoming three legs of the Challenge, and the big question now is which stable will get the first shot in

On Friday, the Challenge starts with the R175,000 first leg over 1,200 metres It will be the seventh of the eight races at the meeting at the Greenbushes venue

The second leg will be run on 26 September over 1,400m The third and final leg is on 17 October over 1,600m

The Cape Town horse, King Regent, trained by Glen Kotzen, showed everyone how it should be done last season He became the first horse to win all three legs of the Challenge to secure a bonus of R250,000 for his connections

This feat motivated the Fairview trainers even more to go back to the drawing board and find a horse to win that bonus this season

There is also the consolation bonus of R50,000 to aim for if one horse doesn't win all the legs

That will go to the best-performing horse over the three legs Such a horse must participate in all three legs and win at least one of them to qualify for the consolation bonus

For this bonus, a points system will be in place for the first six finishers The winner gets 10 points

The Challenge has become very popular since it was introduced in 2016 The poly surface was installed in 2013 after the Arlington track closed down to give Fairview a grass and poly surface The Polytrack was then upgraded in 2022

This past Friday, the action was on the turf track when the first feature races of the new season took place

In both races, the fancied runners were beaten, which might indicate that it is going to be very competitive in the big Fairview races this season

Champion trainer Alan Greeff has an impressive record in the Memorial Mile, and he again came out on top He won the race with Zinovi, which was ridden by Luyolo Mxothwa

and

Zinovi beat the two favourites in the race, the Cape Town visitor, Royal Aussie, and the other Greeff horse, My Best Shot Mxothwa rode four winners on the day

He certainly started the East Cape season in sensational fashion with eight winners already behind his name

The Tara Laing stable was delighted with the victory of Epikleros in the Jockey Club Stakes, a race for fillies and mares over 2,000m Chase Maujean rode a good race, coming from the last position to seal the deal

Fight for the ZWIFA First Division Leaguetrophycontinues

WITH just four games left to go, it is still not clear which side will be crowned Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) First Division League champions

Last week, the log leaders were

Gal City FC, but Young Romans FC now lead the pack after they claimed a commanding 4-1 victory over Amadamara FC Reserves at Zwide Celtics Grounds on Sunday As things stand, it is down to the wire, as the contest for the title is heating up week in and week out So it remains to be seen who will be crowned the league champions after the last four games have been played Any side that drops points will see itself left behind in the league title race Gal City FC and Mighty Heroes FC both had a bye, as they had already played 22 games

Shining Stars FC Reserves dropped three valuable points in their bid to win the league title after they lost 2-1 to Real Rovers FC at Zwide Celtics Grounds on Sunday Young Killers FC, who show room for improvement, trounced Real Crusaders FC 7-0, a team that has managed to win only two games since the start of the season

THE U/19A rugby matches will be the highlight of two massive inter-school events this coming Saturday Framesby will be making the trip from Gqeberha to Humansdorp to resume their rivalry with Nico Malan

In the other inter-school battle, DF Malherbe will be hosting Despatch in Gqeberha

Various events leading up to this weekend's action will take place at all these schools to set the scene and get everyone motivated to produce their very best on the sports fields

DF Malherbe and Despatch will compete in netball, hockey, ten-

nis, chess, golf and cross-country, but rugby will have the final say about who will go away with the bragging rights

Nico Malan and Framesby take each other on in netball, tennis, hockey and golf

These two schools have produced very exciting and competitive rugby matches in recent years

Nico Malan will be looking for a third consecutive victory against Framesby

They beat Framesby 21-17 in Humansdorp two years ago in a real thriller and followed up with a convincing 14-8 victory in Gqeberha last year

Both teams will be full of confidence after solid victories this past Saturday Nico Malan got the better of Punt, winning 2417, and Framesby beat Marlow Landbou 27-0

Nico Malan and Framesby will both be eager to end their year on a high note, and the spectators there will be plenty can look forward to another closely contested match For most schools in Nelson Mandela Bay, it will be the last rugby weekend of the year They will no doubt want to make it a memorable one Every team will be motivated to end the season on a high, and

plenty of action-packed matches can be expected at all the venues

Pearson will be hosting Die Brandwag (Kariega) in what should be a spectacular match

Pearson is back from a visit to the Western Cape and will have to regroup quickly for the new challenge Parel Vallei beat Pearson 20-10, and it is not going to get any easier against Die Brandwag

The visitors will be full of confidence after beating Daniel Pienaar 26-0 in the Kariega Derby Grey High finished their traditional fixtures last Saturday Unfortunately for the Gqeberha side, they could not end their

campaign with a victory Selborne College beat Grey 2714 in East London

The scores were level at 14-14 at half-time, but Grey made too many mistakes in the second half to stay in touch

Remaining fixtures Saturday: DF Malherbe v Despatch, Nico Malan v Framesby Pearson v Brandwag, Alexander Road v Otto du Plessis, Muir College v Daniel Pienaar, Andrew Rabie v
