THE tragic loss of three lives occurred within hours of each other on Wednesday, March 26, along the notorious R75 road near Dora Nginza Hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay.
The incidents have once again placed a spotlight on what has been referred to as the region’s “road of death.” The first accident happened at approximately 14:30 when two 10-year-old siblings, a brother and sister, were fatally struck by a white Ford Ranger.
According to SAPS Kwadwesi, the driver of the vehicle is a 55-year-old man. Both children were declared dead on the scene. A culpable homicide case was opened, and investigations are ongoing.
Only hours later, at around 20:00, a second tragic accident occurred on the same stretch of road. A 56-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle while using a pedestrian crossing. The driver of the unidentified vehicle fled the scene without stopping. SAPS Kwazakele has opened a culpable homicide case and appeals for public assistance to identify the vehicle
and driver involved.
SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge commented, “We are investigating both incidents and urge anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses or anyone who can assist with investigations may contact Detective Captain Arries at SAPS Kwazakele on 082 442 0963 or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.”
The history of a dangerous road In October last year, the PE Express reported on the dangers of the R75, which has long been considered Nelson Mandela Bay’s most hazardous road due to its unsafe conditions.
The road has earned the nickname “road of death” owing to its long history of accidents and safety concerns. Retief Odendaal, DA PE Southwest and Winterhoek Constituency Leader and former Executive Mayor of NMB, has been vocal about these issues and has written to SANRAL CEO Reginald Demana.
Odendaal acknowledged SANRAL’s efforts in maintaining the national road network but pointed out numerous safety shortcomings that remain unresolved. Among these are significant hazards
caused by damaged guardrails, insecure intersections, and poorly maintained road reserves, which collectively create a dangerous driving environment.
To address these issues, the DA proposed a collaborative approach, submitting a memorandum to SANRAL in September 2024.
The plan included hosting discussions with municipal officials and SANRAL, arranging measures to address high-risk intersections, and implementing joint operations involving SAPS, Traffic Services, and Metro Police. It also encouraged using advanced drone technology to improve road safety and escalate the matter nationally and provincially.
SANRAL acknowledged the memorandum received from the DA in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The memorandum was received by SANRAL’s Acting General Manager for Transformation and Stakeholder Relations, Siphiwo Mxhosa.
“SANRAL notes the memorandum submitted by the Democratic Alliance around the state of the R75 section between Gqeberha and Kariega in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. We will study the contents of the memorandum and will com -

WHILE many learners across South Africa proudly put on their school uniforms each morning, the reality is quite different for hundreds, possibly thousands of children who face a daily struggle to attend school without proper school shoes. Recognising this challenge, YMCA Nelson Mandela Bay relaunched its impactful school shoe campaign last month, during Human Rights Month, to address the gap, and restore dignity to learners in need.
The youth-focused nonprofit organisation, situated in the Northern Areas of Gqeberha, has been running this initiative for the past four years under the leadership of CEO Lerato Lebopo.
Highlighting the necessity of the campaign, Lebopo said, "Some children don’t even know their shoe size because they last received school shoes years ago. This initiative is not just about footwear; it’s about restoring dignity and ensuring that every child can walk into school with confidence."
This year, YMCA Nelson Mandela Bay received a generous contribution from the local business, The Little Slipper, which enabled the organisation to expand the reach of its campaign even further.
The team recently visited Mzimhlophe Primary School, and Esitiyeni Primary
School, both located in under-resourced communities in Zwide, where families often struggle to afford even the most basic needs. For many children here, new school shoes are a luxury their families cannot afford.
Despite this, learners remain committed to their education, and the gift of new shoes brings not only relief but also motivation.
Fion Mfenqa, Public Relations and Communications Manager at YMCA Nelson Mandela Bay, explained the broader significance of their ongoing efforts: "Our mission has always been about empowering young people for life, leadership, and service. Campaigns like this one go beyond just providing shoes - they remind children that someone cares and that simple gestures can help overcome barriers to education," she said.
The campaign has also gained international attention and support.
Eric Mann, President and CEO of YMCA of Florida’s First Coast, reflected on the impact of the 2025 US YMCA Coalition’s visit to the Mandela Bay YMCA, "The visit has been emotional, inspiring, and impactful. Participating in the shoe programme is an experience we will never forget. The pure joy of seeing the kids' faces when they received new shoes is priceless and a blessing - ‘good work in action.'"
For the learners at Mzimhlophe and
municate on a way forward once this internal process has been concluded,” said Mxhosa at the time.
The memorandum followed SANRAL’s media statement issued towards the end of September last year, calling for a multi-stakeholder collaboration to restore the R75 to a safer state in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro.
SANRAL had cited incidences of intimidation and demands for participation, theft and vandalism to the road infrastructure, as well as challenges around second-tier procurement for targeted enterprises (SMMEs) that had inhibited its contractor from effectively maintaining the R75.
“Stakeholder engagement is among the key strategic pillars at SANRAL. Engagement with our stakeholders enables us to deliver road infrastructure to communities in an effective and efficient manner. We have an open-door policy to facilitate continuous engagement ensuring that we are aligned with their needs. We appreciate input and feedback from our stakeholders, and we will continue to work closely with them in our road infrastructure service delivery,” Mxhosa concluded.
Esitiyeni Primary Schools, the distribution of school shoes represents more than just charity; it is hope and encouragement woven into every step they take towards their future. The campaign aims to ensure that their access to education is not derailed by something as basic as footwear, Mfenqa expressed.
"Through initiatives like this, YMCA Nelson Mandela Bay aims to continue to uphold its mission of addressing critical youth issues in the region. By empowering those in need, the organisation is taking meaningful steps, both literally and figuratively, to build a brighter future for South Africa’s youth," she concluded.
Louise Lepront (Scottburgh) won the recent SA Open of Surfing WSL QS 1000 surfing tournament at Pollock Beach in Gqeberha. Joshua, equally stylish in perfectly coordinated attire, received his bride with joyous pride.
At the reception, a beautifully crafted wedding cake became the centrepiece, admired by all before it was shared in celebration. To add to the magic, Boxer also gifted the couple a onenight honeymoon suite stay, allowing them to begin their married life in comfort and luxury. Spending money ensured they could indulge in some extra touches, making the day all the more special.

Joshua and Danielle Jantjies recently exchanged vows in a truly magical ceremony.
Danielle shared, “I enjoyed the process of getting to plan everything for our dream wedding. Winning this competition really changed our lives, both figuratively and literally - we are now married, and without it, it wouldn’t have happened anytime soon. We are truly grateful to Boxer for giving us the opportunity, and we appreciate it so much. No words can describe how we feel. AT only two years old, Luca Goliath is fighting a battle that no child should have to face. Diagnosed with Pretext IV Hepatoblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood liver cancer, Luca’s journey has been filled with immense challenges but also an outpouring of love and resilience from her family and supporters.
Facing the need for a life-saving liver transplant, her parents are doing everything they can to give Luca the chance to live a long, healthy life.
“As parents, we never expected to hear the words, ‘Your child has cancer,’” Warren Goliath, Luca’s father, shared. It was in June 2024 when the devastating diagnosis was confirmed, but the warning signs appeared months earlier.
“About four months before her diagnosis, we noticed her abdomen was distended and firm. Her energy levels dropped; she wasn’t walking or crawling and she didn’t seem to keep up with her twin sister.” After several consultations, tests, and scans, the family received the devastating news of Luca’s condition.
Since that diagnosis, Luca has undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy, facing setbacks along the way. “At the start of her journey, she was very ill. There were moments we thought she might not make it,” Warren said. Her treatment has included infections, surgical complications, and repeated hospital stays. Despite these obstacles, Luca showed glimmers of recovery, regaining her energy and even learning to walk again. However, the tumour’s limited response to chemotherapy meant that doctors had to deliver another devastating blow to the family - Luca would need a liver transplant to survive.
Luca’s parents were initially considered as potential live donors, but unfortunately, neither met the strict health criteria. Now the family is racing against time to find a suitable donor.
“The donor evaluation process is detailed and rigorous,” Warren explained. “It starts with an application reviewed by the transplant coordinator and surgeon. Donors must meet criteria such as blood matching, good health, and being able to take six weeks for recovery.” Despite many friends and family members stepping forward, no match has yet been found.
A transplant is Luca’s only chance for survival. Without it, the tumour will have more time to grow or spread, potentially ruling out surgery altogether.
“The tumour is growing around major veins behind the liver, making it inoperable without significant risks. A liver transplant is her only cure,” Warren emphasised. While the procedure carries risks, such as

potential organ rejection and infections, it also offers the hope of a cancer-free life.
The journey has taken a toll on the entire family. Luca is the youngest of four children, with a twin sister, a four-year-old sister, and a nine-year-old brother. “We tried to keep things as normal as possible for our other children while managing Luca’s care, but it’s been tough,” Warren said.
“There were nights when we came home to an empty house because the siblings stayed with family or friends. We had to take turns being with Luca in the hospital.”
Medical aid has covered some of Luca’s treatment costs, but the expenses associated with a liver transplant - including pre-surgical assessments, surgery, recovery, and extended stays in Johannesburg - are financially overwhelming.
“A liver transplant was the last thing we expected, and the costs involved can have lifelong effects on our finances,” Warren revealed. Despite the difficulties, the family remains determined in their commitment to securing the best care for their daughter.
The Goliath family counts themselves fortunate to have a strong support system. “Family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers have been incredible,” Warren said. “Friends and family help care for Luca’s siblings when we’re in the hospital, and their teachers keep a close watch on them at school.”
To help with the financial burden, the family launched a BackaBuddy campaign and has been receiving assistance from organisations like Wings & Wishes, which arranged their travel to and from Johannesburg, and CHOC Saxonwold, which hosted them during their stays.
“These organisations are run by people who truly love and care for children,” Warren said gratefully. Additional fundraising events are being organised by family and friends, with updates posted on Luca’s Facebook page, Luca: The Liver Cancer Warrior.
Every day brings fresh challenges, but also moments of joy and hope. “Daily I sit and watch Luca playing, singing, dancing, laughing, and enjoying life. When you look at her, it’s hard to believe how sick she is,” Warren said. “Her resilience is a testament to God’s grace and mercy. This journey has taught us to appreciate the small things in life.” The family is determined to give Luca the future she deserves, and they invite the community to join their fight. Contributions can be made through their BackaBuddy campaign or directly into Luca’s bank account. “Every little bit helps, and we’re so grateful for the support,” Warren added.
For now, the Goliaths remain focused on their plan for life after the transplant, holding onto the hope that soon Luca will not only overcome this battle but also thrive again as the lively, joyful child they know so well.

NOW to win in KwaZulu-Natal!
That will probably be the next mission for the East Cape champion trainer, Alan Greeff, who is enjoying a phenomenal South African racing season.
Greeff won the SA Fillies Nursery, the first Gqeberha trainer to do so, this past Saturday at the Champions Day meeting at Turffontein in Johannesburg. Golden Palm is the two-yearold filly which made Greeff proud with a brilliant victory. She was ridden by the national champion jockey, Richard Fourie. Greeff and Fourie are the East Cape champion combination which is dominating the local Fairview meetings, but they have also won in Cape Town and now Johannesburg this season.
In February it was Direct Hit which won the Cape of Hope Nursery at Kenilworth in Cape Town for the Greeff stable. Fourie was the jockey. After these two victories, the local racing fans are calling for a two-year-old Greeff filly to tackle the R1 million Alan Robertson Championship in KwaZulu-Natal.
This race will be run at Scottsville in Pietermaritzburg on May 31st. One would expect Greeff to enter for this race but it will be interesting to see if he plans to run both Golden Palm and Direct Hit. And don’t forget that Greeff has a third talented filly in his yard. Anotherdanceforme was impressive when she won the East Cape Fillies Nursery last month. She is also a possible entry. Greeff and the respective owners of his three fillies have some decisions to make, but it is certainly exciting times for the stable.
The top Fairview sprinter, Cruise Control, trained by Gavin Smith, also ran a cracker at
the Turffontein meeting.
He finished fourth in the R1 million Computaform Sprint, with Craig Zackey the jockey.
The soft track didn’t help the speedy Cruise Control but he ran a beautiful race to make it a very good day for Nelson Mandela Bay Racing in Johannesburg.
The day before the Johannesburg meeting it was Greeff and Fourie who dominated at the Fairview Polytrack. Fourie became the first jockey to ride more than 100 winners in an East Cape season for the second time. He is at 102 winners now and should better his own record of 119 for the most winners in an East Cape season. Greeff is also on target to pass his record
mark of 176 winners set in 2019. He has saddled 118 Fairview winners since the start of the season (which ends at the end of July).
The Polytrack meeting brought an eventful month’s racing at Fairview to a close but be ready for more quality racing in April.
This coming Friday the highlight will be the battle for the spectacular Glenlair Trophy over the challenging distance of 2800m.

Local teams to benefit from holiday tournaments
THE Gqeberha players will benefit hugely from their involvement in early-season tournaments during the holiday.
Matches at these tournaments would also have helped the respective coaches to look at the available talent and find the right combinations.
There is great national interest in some of the prestigious tournaments and it provides significant exposure to the players.
There is also television coverage of selected matches. This means that solid individual performances will be picked up by all sorts of scouts and might just lead to a lucrative professional career.

Another Mali side did battle at the annual Grey High Festival which ended in Gqeberha on Monday.
Parel Vallei beat Mali 57-19 but the Eastern Cape boys will no doubt improve with many matches still to be played this year.
One thing is certain – these Mali boys can entertain and they score spectacular tries regularly.
The challenge for the coaching staff is to give more structure to their play and jack up the defence, but still give the players the freedom to use their natural flair on attack to keep on scoring those tries.
Framesby also made an appearance for the first time at the North v South Tournament and, like the Mali XV the previous day, got the first go on Saturday.
Duineveld (Upington) wasn’t the strongest opposition, but the Gqeberha visitors made sure their debut at the tournament was a winning one. It is still early days but it looks as though Framesby is keen to play a more enterprising brand of rugby this year.
Under the captaincy of Eden Calitz (no 8), there was good variation in Framesby’s play. Speedy backs like Cole Hilpert and Damion Witbooi might just enjoy themselves this season.
Raynhardt Brown (lock) was named as the Man of the Match in the 60-7 victory.
Grey High was involved in an absolute thriller on the first day of their festival in the main match on the Kolisi Field on Saturday afternoon. It wasn’t a high-quality match against Michaelhouse, but it was entertaining and went right down to the wire. With 20 minutes to go, Grey was leading 28-16. The KwaZulu-Natal visitors came back with two tries in that period to level the scores.
Michaelhouse missed the last conversion which could have given them victory, the game ending in a draw on 28-28. Grey made plenty of unforced mistakes and their game management was poor, but there were also good signs to indicate much better is on the way.
