Boere van Bewaria help plaasskole

VERONICA FOURIE

JumpStart Programme empowers unemployed youth in Kouga

KOUGA continues to see positive strides in youth development, thanks to the ongoing efforts of the JumpStart Programme - a free initiative designed to equip unemployed youth with critical life skills and valuable work experience in the retail sector.

The programme took place in early May at the Mentors Country Estate.

JumpStart Eastern Cape Assistant Regional Coordinator, Darryll Karolus, said a key contributor to the success of this initiative has been the Kouga Municipality Local Economic Development Office.

“The office played an integral role in supporting the programme from assisting with recruitment and securing the training venue, to providing tea-time snacks, lunch, training equipment and a professional setup.

“Special recognition was given to Kouga Local Economic Development Officer, Sinovuyo Shoco, for her dedication and contributions in ensuring the seamless execution of the training.”

Karolus said the JumpStart Programme has been actively training young individuals in Kouga since 2018, providing them with a Life Skills Course that covers Personal Development, Customer Service, Interview Skills and Entrepreneurship.

“This is followed by a six-day

retail work experience, giving participants hands-on exposure in real-world retail settings, significantly boosting their employability.

“The programme is made possible through strong partnerships with the Mr Price Foundation and the SPAR Group Nationally, which offer training and job placement opportunities through their various retail divisions.”

Participating employer partners include Mr Price Apparel, Mr Price Sport, Mr Price Home, Miladys, Sheet Street, Power Fashion, Studio 88, SPAR and Build It.

Karolus said this year’s training was a resounding success, achieving the target of 20–25 candidates, who will begin their six-day work experience on 14 May at the retail stores of these partnering brands.

“Participants will also receive certificates in Life Skills and Work Experience, which will serve as valuable additions to their CVs, enhancing their prospects for employment within and beyond the retail sector.”

Applauding the initiative, Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said through collaboration and commitment, the JumpStart Programme continues to open doors for young

job seekers, fostering economic growth and community upliftment.

“With each training cycle, the programme empowers more individuals with the confidence and skills needed to step into the working world.

“This will, in turn, contribute to financially independent young people who contribute to the economy of Kouga and the country.”

School’s programme champions nurturing young humanitarians

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

JEFFREYS Bay Primary School's "Caring Kids Club" has been making a significant impact in the community since 2016, offering young learners opportunities to develop awareness and compassion through various service initiatives.

Under the guidance of dedicated teacher, Gillian Kennedy, the club has inspired a generation of young humanitarians, including the Head Girl, Tatum Borcherds, whose recent Easter visit to a local children's home exemplifies the programme's values.

Kennedy said that the Caring Kids Club is a service club which provides our young learners an opportunity to

develop awareness and knowledge of their community and environment.

She said that the club evolved from the school's previous involvement with the Rotary Club of Jeffreys Bay's junior division, with the specific aim of including learners of all ages.

"We aim to encourage our youngsters to be caring, helpful and to show empathy, respect, tolerance and compassion. We hope to make a positive difference in the lives of others and our environment," said Kennedy.

She further said that the club organises numerous outreach activities throughout the year, including weekly assistance at the J-Bay Recycling Project, winter clothing drives, food drives, and a Christmas toy drive.

They also manage recycling efforts within the school, with proceeds supporting their fund for the needy.

"The learners really enjoy making a difference; they feel good about helping others," said Kennedy.

"Many become aware of situations that they were not aware of before, so there are eye-opening experiences which result in them really wanting to help more."

Borcherds recently took the initiative by organising her own visit to a local children's home during Easter.

"Easter is one of the most special holidays for me and my family. It was important to me to share the importance of what Jesus did for us with these special children," said Borcherds.

Her visit included bringing Easter eggs, Easter bunnies, and sweetie packs for the children, as well as organising activities like an Easter egg hunt.

"I did a few activities that I personally loved when I was younger

and still do during this special time. I therefore knew how much fun an Easter egg hunt would be," said Borcherds.

The impact of her visit was evident in the children's reactions.

Borcherds said that there was a lot of excitement and that she could see the joy on their faces.

"What was special was how they were waiting at the entrance, ready to greet me with hugs when I arrived at the home. Everyone was so welcoming and excited," said Borcherds.

"I would love to visit more homes. I am also planning to do an outreach to the youth during the month of June, as it is Youth Month. I am very excited."

Kennedy praised Borcherds' initiative.

She said that Borcherds has shown great initiative by doing this by herself and that they are very proud of her.

"Tatum has inspired the Caring Kids to keep making a difference despite the challenges we face, such as busy work schedules," said Kennedy.

Borcherds said that the experience aligns perfectly with her role as Head Girl.

"As a leader, it is important to me to not only serve my school, but also our community. It has always been one of my biggest wishes, since a younger age, to visit a children's home. I love reaching out. I have a very special place in my heart for children and animals," said Borcherds.

She said that the experience taught her valuable life lessons as well.

Borcherds said her dad, Edwin, has always taught her that all the things that seem like nothing or small to her, might just be everything to someone else or be a dream that became reality. "We

should never take anything for granted and appreciate what we have, no matter how big or small it might seem to us," said Borcherds.

Kennedy mentioned that Borcherds has revived interest in the programme, which had faced challenges in recent years.

"Tatum reminded us that there are learners who really want to do something that will help others. We are planning to relaunch our club and refresh our goals to encourage more learners to join," said Kennedy. "We hope to continue doing what we are doing; we hope to revive some projects that fell away due to

COVID-19, like our stationery drive." Kennedy emphasised that the programme offers more than just community service — it teaches valuable life skills.

She said that a lot of the work they do requires them to spend long hours sorting goods.

While doing so, Kennedy said that they get a chance to really focus on good work ethics and push themselves to get the job done.

"We aim to inspire our youngsters that they have the power to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in so doing, make our world a better place," said Kennedy.

Local aspiring baristas achieve global coffee certification

A GROUP of passionate students from Jeffreys Bay Technical TVET College has taken its first step towards global opportunities in the specialty coffee industry.

Through a partnership with InFood Roastery, these aspiring baristas recently completed an internationally accredited course

with the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) – a qualification recognised worldwide as the gold standard in coffee education.

With commitment, energy, and hard work, every student not only passed the course but gained far more than just a certificate. They acquired confidence, hands-on skills, and industry-ready knowledge, opening doors to both local

and international careers in the coffee sector.

This collaboration between Jeffreys Bay Technical TVET College and InFood Roastery demonstrates the transformative potential of education and industry working together. It’s about more than just making coffee; it’s about creating opportunities for young adults to work towards a

brighter future.

“These young people are now equipped with the tools to thrive, whether in a local café or a highend coffee bar across the globe,” says Percy Chikwira, an authorised SCA Trainer.

Chikwira further reflects:

“Local's Blend was never just about the roast; it’s about people and our community. Every

cup sold of our Local's Blend has helped fund training and scholarships, giving people real skills and real opportunities. When you sip Local's Blend, you’re not just enjoying a great coffee; you’re contributing to someone’s future.” For more information about this course, contact Amore du Plessis at Jeffreys Bay Technical TVET College on 073 938 3395.

Kouga celebrates local environmental champions with inaugural community awards launch

KOUGA Local Municipality is proud to present the inaugural Kouga Municipality Community Environmental Awards (KMCEA), a new initiative dedicated to recognising the unsung heroes making a meaningful impact in protecting the environment and promoting sustainability across the region.

These awards aim to honour individuals, groups, and organisations that have actively contributed to keeping Kouga clean and green through projects such as recycling, tree planting, clean-up campaigns, climate change mitigation, and community upliftment initiatives.

From small businesses turning waste into useful products to individuals educating others about eco-friendly practices, the KMCEA is about celebrating everyday champions whose efforts, no matter how big or small, are helping Kouga thrive.

The inaugural event will also mark the official launch of the Cleanest and Greenest Ward Competition, alongside the Environmental Awards for Schools.

Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, stated that the KMCEA provides an opportunity to acknowledge the remarkable work being done by local changemakers and environmental advocates.

“There are extraordinary people and organisations in Kouga who work tirelessly to protect our environment and build a sustainable future for all,” said Bornman.

He added that the awards reflect Kouga’s commitment to the principles of the National Environmental Management Act, which encourages community-led environmental efforts, waste diversion, and climate resilience.

“The future of our region depends on the actions we take today,” Bornman continued. “By supporting these green initiatives, we are protecting our natural environment as well as creating jobs and building a stronger, more resilient Kouga.”

Sy het haar opleiding in Toronto, Kanada by prof.

cy (59) is gereeld by Yolandé in die warm swembad.

Ek versorg hom juis nadat my ma oorlede is.”

Sy het voorheen ‘n musiekskool by haar huis gehad.

Aquathon vir Guinness Book of Records

Big waves, crowd favourites in Jeffreys Bay this winter

THIS winter, ditch the cold, rainy days and head to South Africa's Sunshine Coast — because Jeffreys Bay is about to heat up.

From July 11 to 20, the normally laid-back surf town will become the epicentre of sizzling surf action, music, comedy and family fun, with the return of the Corona Cero Open J-Bay and the J-Bay Surf Festival.

After a break in 2024, due to a clash with the surf contest at the Paris Olympics, the World Surf League (WSL) is back.

The return marks the 10th stop on the Championship Tour and will feature the sport's most elite athletes carving up the iconic Supertubes.

All eyes will be on SA's Jordy Smith, who currently sits at second in the WSL Men's Rankings and is well-positioned to move up to first.

The line-up will also feature global greats such as Italo Ferreira, Filipe Toledo, Caitlin Simmers, Caroline Marks and others.

WSL Media Manager, Bianca van Aardt, said J-Bay offers so much more than a world-class wave and incredible surf action, making it the perfect family holiday destination.

"It's so exciting to have the WSL Championship Tour back in J-Bay. The world's best surfers are back at the world's best right-hand point break, and this town comes alive during this time. There's a feast of entertainment and activities to suit a range of interests. It really is the place to be this July," said Van Aardt.

Once the surfing is done for the day, the action will get going for the party animals.

The ParkOFF Music Festival this year features electrifying performances by top local and international artists, including:

• Zakes Bantwini (Grammy-winning Afro-house maestro)

• Dino Moran (African house and techno pioneer)

• Dean Fuel and Niskerone (crowd-favourite electronic DJs)

• Italy's Tribal Need and other top local acts

If music isn't enough, Comedy Night will deliver big laughs with South Africa's sharpest comedic talent.

If you or your grom are hoping for a selfie with your hero, the Surf Festival Fan Park will host athlete meet-and-greets, as well as offering a space to explore a variety of food trucks, merch stalls, and live surfing broadcasts.

It's not only about the action on the water. Sports enthusiasts and adventure junkies alike are sure to love the other activities on offer:

• Mountain biking and trail running races for all levels (10–60 km routes for MTB, 5–10 km for trail runs)

• A high-stakes Jiu-Jitsu tournament featuring the biggest prize pool in SA history

Loerieheuwel Gekombineerde Skool hou sportdag

This year's event conveniently spans two weekends of the school holidays, making it easier than ever for families and festivalgoers to make the trip. With up to 70 000 visitors expected, locking in your travel plans now is key.

Organiser Ari Kraak said, "We're expecting the biggest crowd yet.

"The energy, the entertainment, it's all dialled up this year. If you're after a beach holiday with top-class entertainment, then Jeffreys Bay is where you need to be. The ParkOFF

Music Festival will see the likes of Zakes Bantwini and Italy's Tribal Need amongst other top local acts, keeping everyone dancing late into the night."
