A new journey has begun at the Mediclinic Bloemfontein private hospital with the introduction of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System as the first of its kind in private practice in central South Africa
The first sacrocolpopexy procedure (a surgical procedure used to treat pelvic organ prolapse) was performed by Dr Do-Jo Jordaan, gynaecologist, on 8 June She was followed by Dr Jos Myburgh, urologist, who performed the first radical prostatectomy (a surgical procedure where all or part of the prostate gland is removed) on 14 June, with the robotic surgery system International medical literature firmly establishes robotic-assisted surgery as the gold standard for prostatectomies, with both patients and surgeons favouring this approach
Carol Defty, the hospital’s general manager, said at the launch of the da Vinci system on 24 June that the use of this kind of technology was without doubt the future of healthcare
“With Mediclinic Bloemfontein providing healthcare to patients from across the central region, including the Free State, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Lesotho, this is an important addition to our services,” Defty said Jordaan, having already performed nine surgeries by the time of the launch, said the benefit of the system was multi-faceted
“The enhanced 3D vision into the pelvis, where you work in a narrow, closed space, makes precise work possible
“The patients experience less pain, and recovery is much quicker”
She said in eight of the nine cases the patients lost less than a teaspoon of blood during the operation
Dr Carl Streicher, general and bariatric surgeon, performed his first right hemicolectomy (a surgical pro-
cedure to remove either the right or left side of the colon or large intestine) and abdominoperineal resection (a surgical procedure where the anus, rectum, and part of the sigmoid colon are removed to treat rectal or anal cancer); and Dr Francois Kruger, general surgeon, his first right hemi-
colectomy and low anterior resection (a surgical procedure to remove a portion of the rectum, typically for rectal cancer, and reconnect the remaining rectum to the colon)
Dr Rachel Moore, chief medical officer (CMO) at Mediclinic Southern Africa, confirms this is one of three
da Vinci robotic surgical systems that was implemented across the group in South Africa The other three are in Mediclinic Vergelegen, Mediclinic Kloof and Mediclinic Durbanville
Other surgeons in Bloemfontein have already started the long training process they need to undergo before
they can use the new system
Urologists Dr Aubrey Coetzer and Dr Willem Dahms will be trained and accredited in the next few months
Each surgeon practises with the simulator for up to 40 or 50 hours before they start operating with a proctor
Only after the intensive training is concluded, are surgeons allowed to use the da Vinci system
According to Defty staff and assisting doctors have also been trained
Depending on the type of surgery, surgeons were trained in different countries, including France, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Germany
The opportunities that the system hold are endless, including operations that can be conducted from outside the theatre and even from elsewhere in the world
Defty has confirmed that all surgery with the da Vinci system is not yet covered by medical aid, but this is sure to change
“We are very excited about the opportunities created by the use of this new technology It is all about the patient,” Defty mentioned at the launch
Interstate Bus Lines’ (IBL) new tariff hike of 6% for passengers trips became effective yesterday, Tuesday, 1 July and will be operational until end of June 2026
The bus company announced on Tuesday, 24 June, a new hike which will apply to both multi-journey tickets and cash fares
This sees an average increase of R1 on each trip
The company stated the adjustment of overall 6% was approved by the Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport
The hike also followed consultations with stakeholders that include the provincial department in question and passengers in the greater Mangaung Metro – Bloemfontein, Botshabelo, and Thaba Nchu
The Interstate Bus Lines’fleet maintenance workers photographed being hands on deck, fixing sinkholes on the Dr Belcher route in Bloemfontein, in the Mangaung Metro headquarters.
This means the IBL will continue to cushion the business’ expenses despite a hike in tariffs for commuters, and a 4 5% subsidy from government for the current financial term from 1 July until the end of June 2026
On the other side, passengers lament the hike and expressed their frustration on social media platforms saying the hike adds to their financial
The bus company, however, received approval for a lower increase than initial proposed 10%, which it hoped will enable it to offset expenses such as fuel, repairs, and maintenance According to the company, the costs for maintenance and repair of their bus fleet accounts for the largest part of its budget Excessive costs includes tyre replacements and repairs to the bus fleet to keep up with safety standards The bus company bemoans the deteriorating road infrastructure it is operating on within the Mangaung Metro
distress Botshabelo has the biggest number of passengers, followed by Thaba Nchu, traveling to Bloemfontein for work and study at tertiary institutions Approximately 30 000 passengers are transported from the two towns, using a fleet of 238 busses It also volunteers to repair deteriorating routes in areas it operates in the Mangaung Metro to ensure safety of passengers This an attempt to provide transport services to destitute passengers in farflung rural areas in Thaba Nchu and Botshabelo
The long arm of the law has seemingly caught up with a Bloemfontein attorney, culminating in her appearance in the Bloemfontein Regional Court.
Elmarie Prinsloo (47) is facing serious criminal charges of fraud, theft, money laundering, as well as contravention of the Attorneys Act
Prinsloo is expected to reappear in the same court on Thursday, 17 July, following her first appearance on 26 June
Her appearance followed an investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Bloemfontein
She was served with summons on 11 June, following the elite crime fighting state agency ’ s completion of its investigation regarding fraud and money laundering allegations
Prinsloo is accused of swindling a client of about R3,4 million and contravening the Attorneys Act
The swindled cash is reportedly part of a victim’s estate WO Fikiswa Matoti, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said the charges pertained to fraud and money laundering allegedly committed from January 2015 to July 2017
“The suspect was entrusted with the complainant’s estate, which she received in the form of about R6 million in cash
“This amount was supposed to be held in a trust account on behalf of the complainant, but it was kept in the suspect’s personal account This resulted in the
complainant losing about R3,4 million,” said Matoti
The charge of contravention of the Legal Practice Act relates to practicing without a Fidelity Fund Certificate (FFC), which is binding for all attorneys in the profession
The Hawks uncovered this during the investigation
The Legal Practice Council (LPC) issues an FFC to practitioners annually – this is a mandatory licence for legal practitioners in South Africa who handle client funds
The document is a guarantee that the practitioner is authorised to manage trust accounts and protects the public from potential losses due to theft or misappropriation of these funds It also ensures practitioners can handle client funds and property responsibly
Prinsloo joins the growing list of Free State attorneys accused of unethical practices, eroding the public’s trust in the legal profession
Just this year from January to May, according to the LPC website, three practitioners were disbarred: Kabelo Matee, Nozipho Cokisa Dlali and Sharon de Lange
Those suspended are: Matshediso Caroline Tladi, Hermanus Johannes Kleynhans, Johan Gerardus van Es, Lourens van Wyk and Daniël Johannes de Wet
About 15 practitioners in the Free State have been disbarred, while the number of suspended candidates with pending cases is about 35 The LPC is investigating candidates under suspension This number of suspended and disbarred practitioners refers to September 2022 to May this year
The police officer arrested regarding the kidnapping of Martie du Plessis Special School learner Kamogelo Baukudi (19) is continuing with his bail bid in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court, while the other five arrested are due to make their first appearance
Sgt Nzima Philemon Adoons (42) was the first suspect apprehended, while the other five were arrested at Wepener on Friday, 27 June
Kamogelo has since been reunited with his family in Bloemfontein
Adoons reappeared in court alone on Monday, 30 June, to continue with his application bid This followed his arrest on 7 June, two days after Kamogelo was abducted while in company of his driver, Daniel Malebatso
Adoons mentioned in court that he was arrested after he had been questioned by Maj Gen Arthur Peter Adams, Mangaung Metro district commissioner, at the cluster offices on Friday, 6 June
He is charged with kidnapping and extortion
Adoons’ legal team is claiming he was not involved in the highly publicised kidnapping of Kamogelo, as is indeed being alleged by the state
The police’s intensive investigations began on 5 June, after Kamogelo’s mysterious kidnapping in Bloemfontein
He was kidnapped shortly after being fetched from school by his
driver
The five suspected kidnappers, aged between 20 and 29 years, were arrested during the police’s intelligence-driven operation at a house in the Kanana and Kwetla locations, respectively
Brig Motantsi Makhele, spokesperson for the Free State police, said two of the suspects had been caught on the road between the Kwetla location and Wepener town Kamogelo was found with them in the vehicle they were travelling in
He said the investigations were ongoing to try to piece the puzzle of Kamogelo’s kidnapping together
The learner was reportedly kidnapped on Thursday, 5 June, at approximately 11:55, after the ve-
hicle he had been travelling in was stopped by two men who presented themselves as police officers, and accused Kamogelo and his driver of transporting drugs
The police reported that Kamogelo’s driver, whilst driving along Vereeniging Drive in the Erlichpark Extension, purportedly heard a siren from behind their vehicle, and was pulled over by a white double cab Toyota Hilux GD-6
According to the information the driver provided to the police, the bakkie had been fitted with blue lights on the grill, as well as what looked like a police radio inside
One of the suspects were wearing a police uniform and the other a blue tracksuit
The rippling effect of gender-based violence (GBV) on South African women takes centre stage in a satirical theatrical drama titled Text me when you Arrive. It highlights unsafe spaces for women in the country while continuing to create awareness.
The drama will be performed at the Pacofs theatre in Bloemfontein, from 10 to 12 July Sessions will start at 18:30 during this three-day period
The drama originates from the reality that for several women, true safety comes only after death
Text me when you Arrive is a daring, satirical production created and performed by Aalliyah Matintela, Sibahle Mangena, and Thuli Nduvane
The trio have teamed up to explore their theatrical abilities to amplify the voices and stories of South African women The drama is directed by Sinenhlanhla Mgeyi, with the guidance of
Originally commissioned in 2019 for the Market Theatre Laboratory's 30 Years of the Lab Alumni Festival, the play has enchanted audiences at venues such as the Ramolao Makhene Theatre

to pursue what may feel like an impossible mission - to speak out, be seen, and spark change even among those responsible for perpetuating the very issues being examined
Characterised as both
impactful and satirical, the play examines the everyday experiences of South African women through the innovative perspective of a fictional YouTube channel
By fusing physical theatre with modern-day storytelling, the production tackles issues of patriarchy, GBV, and rape
Hashtags and online trends serve as instruments of resistance and awareness, reflecting the play's objective to ignite meaningful discussion and cultural introspection
The performances are under just an hour and immerses audiences in a visceral experience that is both relatable and thought-provoking

A solo exhibition acknowledging and honouring the First Nation peoples of this land, the San and Khoi groups, is in construction at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s Reservoir venue in Bloemfontein
Titled What remains through time, slowness and stillness?, the exhibition will officially open from 15 July to 24 August
This is creative work by artist Sonya Rademeyer, interested in exploring notions of deep-empathy
She explained the importance of the exhibition
“I hereby acknowledge and honour First Nation peoples of this land, the San and Khoi, who hold deep ancestral connections and memories to this land and its people, and on whose land this project takes place”
Karen Marais, senior exhibition officer, said the altar piece to the exhibition is the building of a cultural wall or “Meraka” (place of gathering) through community collaboration
“Using post-natural and indigenous methodologies which include materials such as clay and animal dung, the collaborative building is viewed as
a gesture of relationality The wall hopes to visibilise decolonial ways of knowing through recognisable traditional building materials and particular architectural iconography It also reads as an honouring towards the land on which the work of the solo exhibition happens,” said Marais
The exhibition, divided into phases, is conceptualised around the theme of time and erosion, and explored through a decolonising worldview
“In the place of stillness where erosion generally happens, such as in the natural and biological environment, the natural processes of decay an erosion of plant life generally runs unnoticed

Leaders often assume that delegation equals empowerment, only to be frustrated when delegated tasks end up back on their desks after some time Unfortunately, more often than not, what is perceived as delegation is merely handing over the responsibility for task delivery without the structure, authority, or tools needed to deliver outcomes
It is not enough to empower; leaders must also equip Empowerment, in practical terms, means giving people the authority to make the decisions required to achieve a result It involves being explicit about what they are responsible for, what decisions fall within their mandate, where the boundaries are, and what preferences or non-negotiables should shape their approach It also requires ensuring others in the organisation recognise that authority and are prepared to cooperate accordingly
But too often, empowerment is implied rather than clearly articulated Someone is asked to “take ownership,” but there’s no follow-up conversation about decision rights, expected actions, or how to handle resistance from others They are left to interpret vague expectations, often running into unspoken rules or a lack of cooperation that undermines the very task they have been asked to lead
On its own, empowerment does not guarantee outcomes That is where equipping comes in To equip someone is to ensure they have the tools, systems, access, content, processes, information and skills required to succeed It is not about spoon-feeding or micro-managing; it is about removing friction and making sure they are not spending time battling for basic resources
This disconnect is especially evident in organisations that demand innovation but withhold what is needed to pursue it In such an organisation, a team may be asked to find new ways to speed up delivery They might research options thoroughly and identify specific tools or platforms that could make it possible But if those proposals are dismissed – for example, because leadership is unwilling to fund essential software – the team remains accountable for outcomes they are not equipped to deliver The message is mixed: be innovate, but do not ask for support Move faster, but use the same constraints
The result is frustration on both sides Momentum is lost because the conditions for success were never put in place
“However, when notions of erosion are introduced to include the historical, the social, the cultural, intellectual or the political, it becomes humanly foregrounded
“Using conceptual ideas around time, erasure, loss, invisible belonging and time as departure points to explore notions of historical cultural erasure, the more-than-human-kin (live snails) leave traces of such erasure by eating into high-end Fabriano paper, ” said Marais
She said the exhibition in itself appeals for a new way of conscious decision-making around community inclusion, even within a solo exhibition structure
“A broader concept of community inclusion is through the conceptual and physical linkage of the exhibition wall to a Meraka on the outskirts of Bloemfontein This decolonising cultural act enforces a bi-directional exchange whilst decentering Oliewenhuis Art Museum as a colonial institution, creating an opportunity to open up conversations around cultural exclusion due to colonisation,” said Marais
This dynamic often shows up at the leadership level as well In one coaching scenario, a chief executive officer (CEO) delegated key operational responsibilities to his second-in-command (2IC) but struggled to let go of control Although he appeared to be handing over authority, he retained strong preferences shaped by how things had always been done The result was that his 2IC, though technically in charge, had little room to exercise independent judgement The delegation lacked the freedom necessary for progress
The cost of this leadership gap is real Projects stall Capable people hesitate Leaders continue to carry too much, believing they have delegated when in fact they have only shifted the burden without enabling delivery
Closing this gap does not require a new framework – just a more intentional pause Before assigning a task, ask yourself: Am I clearly empowering this person, including what they are responsible for and what decisions they have the authority make? And do they have what they need to succeed, or am I leaving them to piece it together on their own and fight their way through resistance from others?
When the answer to both is yes, leadership becomes far more effective Teams gain momentum Individuals take real ownership Delegation becomes a tool for progress rather than a source of friction Empowerment feels good to say – but it only works when it is matched with the means to act
True leadership does not end at the assignment of responsibility It includes creating the conditions that make success possible

The Free State promotion play-offs to decide two clubs to be promoted to the second-tier ABC Motsepe League are on ice This is due to a bitter dispute lingering It involves two rival clubs, Harmony Academy and Welkom Real Stars, in the Safa Lejweleputswa region
At this point in time, Harmony has successfully appealed the verdict by Safa’s Lejweleputswa regional disciplinary committee passed on 21 March
Safa’s Free State Appeal Committee made a puzzling ruling on Wednesday, 18 June This was that Harmony should not be awarded the three points after Stars were docketed for contravention, and the committee ordered that both clubs pay the costs of the appeal sitting held on 13 and 22 April
Aggrieved side Harmony has challenged this bizarre decision, which challenges the generally standing order that the club found in the wrong is docketed three points and those points are awarded to the opponent
The provincial appeal committee duly found Stars to be in the wrong and confirmed such offense However, it made a ruling that is contradictory
The finalisation of the dispute will pave the way for the promotion play-offs, initially destined to take place in Bloemfontein at the end of May The play-offs involve the winners of the five regions Mangaung Metro, Xhariep, Thabo Mofutsanyana and Fezile Dabi, as well as Lejweleputswa
Four reginal winners are waiting with bated breath for Safa to resolve the dispute in the affected region in order to continue with the play-offs Clubs that have already secured a slot are: Ficksburg-based Tower United (Thabo Mofutsanyana), Moroka Sweppers from Jacobsdal (Xhariep), Brave FC from Kroonstad (Fezile Dabi) and Kamel FC from Bloemfontein (Mangaung Metro)
The two clubs finishing top after the playoffs are promoted to the ABC Motsepe League, which is the semi-professional division The league is played in all nine provinces of South Africa
The Free State province is well represented in this year’s South African Schools Netball (SASN) tournament, featuring girls’ teams of all ages
The competition is hosted at the Hoërskool Dr E G Jansen in Boksburg,
which is in Gauteng
This annual competition makes provision for participation in the following categories: U12, U13, U14 and U15, as well as U16
This year’s tournament features 28
teams, representing all nine provinces of South Africa In addition, three guest clubs from the neighbouring country of Namibia are also represented
The schools talent development tournament started on Monday, 30 June,
and was expected to officially end on Wednesday
The event would culminate in a prize-giving ceremony and the crowning of the champions as well as announcement of the best players from the tour-
nament – who on this merit are chosen to form the national team
The selected team will represent South Africa at the upcoming international competition scheduled take place in Eswatini at the end of August

nts' cona suitable the head g position ulminated the appointment of Frenchborn Alexandre Lafitte (28) The ub annced on day, 25 thful coach to influen-
wo-year ing the Premier g ( ) Lafitte takes over the reins from Moroccan-born Abdeslam Ouaddou, whom Orlando Pirates
unveiled two days before as the head coach, replacing José Riveiro – who had an illustrious stint at the Soweto giants, amidst not winning the Premiership league title
The Gallants were in the market to find a capable head coach following the dramatic resignation of Abdes, as Ouaddou was known in the Free State capital of Bloemfontein during his three-month spell
The Frenchman’ impressive record was considered, which includes guiding the Ivory Coast team Stade Abidjan to winning the league championship in 2023 He was just 25 years old then, when the club rewrote history by winning its first league title in 56 years
Lafitte’s coaching pedigree includes guiding the club to reach the CAF Champions League group stages in the 2023-’24 campaign
The Gallants’ further considerations were the Frenchman’s qualifications He reportedly holds a UEFA A licence and established his coaching stint with French giants Paris Saint-Germain FC, as the academy coach Sello Nduna, spokesperson for
