Maritz (57) is vroeër op verskeie aanklagte,insluitend verkragting, in die hooggeregshof in Bloemfontein skuldig bevind Mojalefa Senokoatsane, woordvoerder van die NVG , sê in teenstelling met die ongegronde openbare bewerings dat “niks met die saak gebeur het nie’’ of dat Maritz nie skuldig bevind is nie” , bevestig die NVG dat Maritz inderdaad skuldig bevind is aan verskeie ernstige seksmisdrywe, insluitend verkragting, skuldig bevind is Die hooggeregshof in Bloemfontein het hom skuldig bevind In ’ n mediaverklaring sê Senokoatsane dat die NVG se doel met dié verklaring is om die openbare rekord reg te stel, begrip van die strafregstelsel te bevorder en die waardigheid en privaatheid van die slagoffers te beskerm Maritz het vroeër op 18 aanklagte ingevolge die Wysigingswet op die Strafwet (Seksuele Oortredings en Verwante Aangeleenthede) Wet 32 van 2007, asook ’ n bykomende aanklag van aanranding, terreggestaan

Die seksuele misdrywe het oor sewe jaar plaasgevind, tussen 2007 en 2014, in Virginia, Welkom en Odendaalsrus in die Vrystaat plaasgevind

Al sy slagoffers was onder die ouderdom van 18 jaar toe die misdrywe gepleeg is Op 17 Mei 2021 het Maritz aanvanklik onskuldig gepleit Op 21 Mei 2021 het hy egter formele erkennings ingevolge Artikel 220 van die Strafproseswet,Wet 51 van 1977 gemaak, wat deur die hof aanvaar is

Gebaseer op hierdie erkennings het die hoogeregshof hom op 16 aanklagte skuldig bevind, insluitend drie aanklagte van verkragting en verskeie ander aanklagte wat seksuele misdrywe teen minderjariges behels, sê

Ná sy skuldigbevinding het Maritz sy regsverteenwoordiging verander en adv Dawie Joubert SC aangestel, wat twee aansoeke, insluitend ’ n aansoek dat regter Soma Naidoo, op gronde van beweerde vooroordeel haar aan die verhoor onttrek, asook ’ n aansoek om Maritz se erkennings ter syde te laat stel

Die hoogeregshof het albei aansoeke van die hand gewys en bevestig dat die verhoor regverdig en sonder vooroordeel was, sê Senokoatsane

Hy sê verder ’ n aansoek om die ontrekking van Naidoo is ook deur die appèlhof van die hand gewys en daarna het die konstitusionele

hof geweier om die saak aan te hoor, wat daarop dui dat alle regsremedies uitgeput is Maritz se pogings om sy erkennings terug te trek was tot op hede, onsuksesvol Sy vonnisoplegging is tot 6 Oktober in die hoogeregshof uitgestel Die hof sal na verwagting die voorgeskrewe minimum vonnis van lewenslange gevangenisstraf oorweeg, ingevolge artikel 51(1) van die Strafregwysigingswet 105 van 1997 weens die verkragting wat minderjariges onder verswarende omstandighede

Die NVG veroordeel die opsetlike verspreiding van wanligting rakende hierdie saak “Sulke optrede ondermyn nie net die publiek se vertroue in die strafregsstelsel nie, maar kan ook verdere emosionele skade en sekondêre trauma vir die slagoffers veroorsaak, sê Senokoatsane

“Die NVG doen ’ n beroep op alle lede van die publiek om nie vals of misleidende stellings te maak of te verspei wat die regsproses kan belemmer nie”

Volgens Senokoatsane bly die NVG vasbeslote in sy grondwetlike mandaat om die oppergesag van die reg te handhaaf, geregtigheid vir slagoffers van seksuele en geslagsgeweld te verseker en oortreders aanspreeklik te hou, ongeag hul professionele of sosiale status Die NVG sal voortgaan om alle sake te vervolg sonder vrees, guns of vooroordeel, sê Senokoatsane

Fourth child drowns in a year

The fourth child in just under a year has drowned in a sewer pit in Matjhabeng

In the latest incident, an eleven-year-old boy drowned at a construction site in the K5 Section of Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus

On Saturday, 2 August, Odendaalsrus police were summoned to a drowning scene at Kutlwanong

They were informed that three boys aged 10 and 11 were swimming in an excavation pit filled with wastewater

“It is alleged that the boys became stuck in the mud Two of the boys, aged 10, managed to get out, whilst the 11-yearold victim became stuck in the mud and ultimately drowned,” says Sgt Palesa Thabana of the Lejweleputswa police

The Welkom police diving unit, under the command of Sgt Arno Cronje, was called to the scene

“Together with Matjhabeng Fire Department, members retrieved the body of the deceased from the wastewater pit on Saturday at 20:20,” she says

The 11-year-old victim was declared dead at the scene by emergency services The deceased was identified by his next of kin

She says parents are urged to educate their children about water safety and the risks of swimming in contaminated water On 10 November 2023, two children aged 10 and 11 drowned in a construction

An innovative street project in Doorn, Welkom, has now expanded to encompass four streets in the neighbourhood

What initially started as the Reitz Street Neighbourhood Watch now also includes the streets Hope, Nyala, and Loop, as well as the small street

next to Welkom Volkskool

The convenors of this unique project are Tania Lategan and Petrie Pienaar, and what was initiated for safety has now expanded to include the cleaning of streets, pavements, pothole repair, painting manholes, and manhole covers

“We started about three years ago with the two parks that were posing a threat to the surrounding houses “The trolley people and other

criminal elements would use the overgrown parks to sort out their loot, and then leave the discarded items as litter in the parks

“We cleaned up the parks, and then we fenced them off, with permission of the municipality This created clean and secure areas, ” says Lategan

Every Saturday, three men are employed to cut paving overgrowth, fill potholes, paint manholes and manhole covers, and generally keep

the area spick and span

To this end, the residents donate R100 a month to cover the salaries of the weekly workers, painting, and anything else that is needed

“We were soon approached by the residents of the adjacent Hope, Nyala, and Loop streets to become part of the project,” says Lategan They have painted the kerb stones and named the streets Residents also buy Neighbourhood Watch signs for

“We have managed to install 12 cameras that are monitored We have replaced the stolen manhole covers with concrete ones, and as a colourful quirk in the winter months, we started to wrap material around the trees in the streets to make them look special and brighten up the area We change the material every six to eight weeks

We are very proud of our streets and our project”

The trees in Reitz Street,Doorn,are wound around with different lengths of colourful material every six to eight weeks The residents are given the choice of colour and material pattern for the trees.

The manholes in Reitz Street have been painted different colours and the covers have been replaced with cement blocks to ensure the safety of residents and pedestrians

Beauty in things insigniﬁcant

One Thing Leads to Another,

a solo exhibition by Bronwen Findlay, is taking place in the main building of the Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein

This exhibition of mostly colourful and textured artworks is a review of 48 years of expressive painting by Findlay and visually showcases different eras of her life Some pieces have been borrowed from public collections, while others have not been shown previously and some were created as recently as this year

Findlay says her work is informed by spaces that she has lived in, places she has been to, things she has collected and people she has collaborated with

“I manipulate paint and colour in response to my subject matter I like to think that every picture tells a story, and each painting exists as its own world

“I try to find beauty in things which might seem insignificant or not of great importance, the ordinary or every day I have painted domestic objects, which may be loaded with cultural connotations Textiles and cloth have also played an important role in my work I was influenced by the embroidery and beadwork created by women from the Limpopo province and for a time beaded my paintings with dots of paint “Colour and decoration

have always been an important aspect of my painting This decorative manipulation of paint may also be seen in my more recent paintings of South African flora and fauna while these works are hardly botanical, I hope that they capture a different reality”

Findlay was born in December 1953 and spent her childhood in KwaZulu-Natal

She matriculated in Pietermaritzburg and studied art at the Natal Technikon and the University of Natal (later the University of KwaZulu-Natal)

Her first teaching post was at the Mansfield Boys’ High in Durban, and she went on to teach in the Education and Art departments of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ)

Alongside her teaching, she has worked with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in both Durban and Johannesburg

Throughout her career, she

has maintained a consistent painting practice She has held solo exhibitions at the KZNSA Gallery, Elizabeth Gordon Gallery, and Tamasa Gallery in Durban, as well as Everard Read Gallery, David Krut, Gallery Two, and Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg Her work is included in public and private collections in South Africa and abroad

In addition to her painting, Findlay has worked collaboratively on printmaking and embroidery projects, and more recently on mosaic commissions based on her drawings and paintings

Findlay’s first exhibition was held in 1977 at the Walsh Marais Gallery in Durban since this time she has painted while teaching at schools and later universities Looking at this body of work shown in one place enables one to see how one thing leads to another The exhibition can be viewed until Sunday, 17 August Oliewenhuis is located at 16 Harry Smith Street and is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 17:00, and on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays between 09:00 and 16:00

There have been 93 confirmed cases of measles as of week 29 since the outbreak of this disease in the Free State

“Since the first positive case was detected in the private health sector on 23 February, the department has taken decisive action to control the outbreak The initial cases in Lejweleputswa were followed by a series of confirmed cases, with the most affected sub-district being Matjhabeng, which accounts for 42 of the total cases, ” says Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the Free State Department of Health

The Nala area has also seen an increase in cases, necessitating continued vigilance and response efforts

Mvambi says the department is pleased to report that the outbreak in Mangaung has been declared over, a testament to the effectiveness of the outbreak response measures In Lejweleputswa, whilst sporadic cases have been observed from weeks 20 to 29, the department believes the outbreak is under control

The focus remains on the areas with higher numbers of unvaccinated individuals, particularly in Matjhabeng and Nala

Key actions taken by the Free State Department of Health include containment efforts, risk communication and community engagement, improved data management, support and collaboration, and clinical management

“The department urges all residents to remain vigilant, particularly in areas with higher case numbers

Food safety brought in focus

Several food handlers, including informal food vendors in the Free State, are set to benefit from a newly launched partnership initiative aimed at revolutionising food safety standards and practices

The Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, in partnership with the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSeta), launched the Tshireletso Ka Thuto campaign on Thursday, 31 July

This transformative project is aimed at improving public health and food safety, as well as reducing the risk of contamination and foodborne illnesses across the province

The initiative was partly inspired by the deaths of approximately 30 schoolchildren in Gauteng’s Lesedi District in 2024 It is believed this was caused by cross-contamination involving toxic substances in improperly cleaned containers

Through this partnership project, stakeholders will train

and educate active participants in the small-scale economy Prof Ryk Lues, research leadership chair in Food Safety and Sustainability of the CUT, said the programme would run until 2026, with the goal of training over 2 000 participants They are targeting street food vendors, spaza shop owners and small-scale food processors

He explained that Tshireletso Ka Thuto, meaning “Protection through Education” , was a community-driven campaign rooted in the belief that accessible education is key to reducing health risks associated with unsafe food handling

“There is a lack of safety and quality in the informal food sector; not necessarily in the food itself, but in the knowledge and regulatory support surrounding it,” said Lues while referring to the deaths in 2024

He said the campaign adopts a two-pronged approach: Raising awareness among consumers about food safety

risks, as well as training and empowering informal food suppliers to understand and apply hygiene regulations and safe food handling practices in a practical, sustainable way

Through theoretical instruction, hands-on learning and ongoing support, the programme will impact communities such as Botshabelo, Thaba-Nchu, Clarens, Welkom and Ficksburg

“This is where informal food trade is a vital part of daily life and local economies,” he said Lues said the initiative was fully supported by local municipalities, health professionals, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the CUT’s internal structures

“Tshireletso Ka Thuto reflects the university’s broader mission of community engagement and inclusive development It stands as a national model for how higher education can drive real-world change, one clean bowl at a time,” said Lues

Roaming livestock problem persists

Urgent action to address the uncontrolled livestock roaming on the R730 is urgently needed

Abigail Schoeman, DA councillor, is calling for urgent municipal response to the livestock hazard in Matjhabeng She has submitted formal questions to the Matjhabeng Council to compel urgent action

“The Matjhabeng Municipality's failure to control roaming livestock is a growing threat to public safety, animal welfare, and public health Motorists and residents have repeatedly raised concerns about cattle wandering freely across Matjhabeng This negligence endangers human lives and directly violates basic traffic and public safety standards It is equally alarming to frequently see animals drinking from and walking through raw sewage This is cruel and unhygienic It has serious implications for animal health and the wider community,” she says

Exposure to raw sewage increases the risk of infectious diseases in livestock These conditions also heighten concerns about Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks, which have devastating consequences for food safety, the economy, and the agricultural sector

“Despite multiple public appeals and an

escalating risk, the municipality has not implemented adequate measures The municipality still needs to manage livestock On 10 July, I submitted a formal question to the Council per Rule 52 of the Standard Rules and Orders The submission raised critical concerns about the establishment of the pound Until clear and decisive action is taken, residents remain at risk Matjhabeng continues to fall short of its responsibility to ensure a safe and healthy environment,” she says

MAN ARRESTED AFTER TWO FOUND SHOT DEAD

The police in Odendaalsrus have arrested a 37-yearold man after two other men aged 23 and 24, respectively, were found fatally shot in Odendaalsrus On Sunday, 13 July, the police were summoned to a shooting incident in Odendaalsrus Upon their arrival at the scene, they found two African males lying motionless with gunshot wounds to their chests

POLICE SECURE A LIFE SENTENCE FOR BOYFRIEND

A 32-year-old man has received a life sentence for rape, and an additional four years for housebreaking with intent, following a heinous crime committed in February 2024

On 12 July, the Welkom courts sentenced Melikaya Tsatsa for the heinous crime he committed in 2024

The assault and subsequent rape

On 21 February 2024, Tsatsa entered his 46-yearold girlfriend's home in Thabong The victim was with a male friend when he confronted them, accusing them of an affair

Tsatsa then attacked the male friend, who managed to escape He then turned his aggression

towards the victim She attempted to ﬂee to other tenants residing in a shack on the premises, but Tsatsa followed her and continued his assault They re-entered the house, where the assault continued, and he proceeded to rape her multiple times throughout the night The following morning Tsatsa locked the victim inside the house and left However, she managed to escape through the door A case of rape and housebreaking with intent unknown was immediately opened and investigated Sgt Themba Jilimba of the Thabong Family violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit was entrusted with the investigation working in collaboration with Adv Elias Masooane of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Their diligent efforts led to the successful conviction of Tsatsa

“It is alleged that an argument ensued between the two victims and the suspect before the shooting The two men were certiﬁed dead on the scene,” says Sgt Palesa Thabana, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa police

She says the motive for the murders will form part of police investigations The suspect was subsequently arrested for murder
