For most of her life, former Nottingham resident Isobel Lepist appeared calm, capable and quietly driven. Yet beneath the surface, everyday life often felt markedly more overwhelming, more confusing and more exhausting than it seemed to for those around her. From early childhood to her senior roles in international organisations, she carried a deep sense that she was working twice as hard as others just to keep up, without ever understanding why. It wasn’t until just before her 53rd birthday, when she was finally diagnosed with both Autism and ADHD, that those lifelong struggles began to make sense. “The moment I started reading about ADHD and Autism in women, the hairs on my arms stood up. It was like someone had been watching my whole life and taking notes. Suddenly all the things I’d blamed myself for weren’t character flaws, they were neurodivergence.” Isobel first moved to Nottingham in 1989 to study Photography at Nottingham Trent University, remaining in the city for the next 12 years, where her daughter was born and raised. Now 55 and living in Stockport, the mum-of-one is sharing her story to help others, like her, who have spent years navigating life without answers, unaware their challenges have a name, and that support exists.

I was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD at 52

Growing up in the 1970s and 80s, Isobel’s differences were easy to overlook. She was the child who could draw to an exceptional standard at the age of six, and wrote a novel at nine, yet had no idea what the teacher was asking unless the classmate beside her quietly translated each instruction. Her curiosity and sensory seeking often led to memorable mishaps.

difficulties. She misread intentions in relationships and found herself in unsafe situations. In the workplace, she excelled externally while privately feeling out of sync. “Imagine walking into a global boardroom but internally feeling about 12-years-old. That’s what it was like. I mirrored the people around me so well that no one saw how much I was burning out behind the scenes.”

“I once took apart my mum’s leather court shoes with a seam ripper because I wanted to make a rounders ball. Another time I cut up our curtains with razor blades just to see how they were made, and I’d sit sticking needles into hot water bottles because the texture and sound were irresistible. Nobody realised it was sensory seeking, they just thought I was naughty.”

Despite this private turmoil, Isobel built a successful career in the global energy and logistics sectors. She worked across the UK, Berlin and The Hague, collaborated with more than 90 nationalities, and earned awards for innovation.Daily life brought its own unseen obstacles. She wore the same clothes until they fell apart, ate the same foods for years, and often found supermarkets debilitating.

At school, the misunderstandings intensified. When she swept her maths book onto the floor in frustration, a teacher told her that “children who behave like this end up in prison”. From that moment on, any meltdown happened behind closed doors. At nine, she lost her father suddenly. With limited emotional support and no framework for processing grief, she did what autistic girls so often do, masked harder, hid her feelings, and tried to appear unaffected. “I didn’t know how to process it, so I acted as if nothing had happened. I genuinely thought my inability to cope was just me being ‘weird’.” High school added new challenges for Isobel. She struggled to navigate the building unless she attached herself to a classmate. If she found herself alone, she hid in the toilets rather than arrive late after getting lost. School discos and Christmas parties were unbearable. “It was my worst nightmare. The noise, the unpredictability, the pointlessness. I used to make myself sick just to avoid them.” Adulthood mirrored many of these early

“I would walk out of ‘Big Tesco’ on the verge of tears, with none of the items I needed. Now I understand that was sensory overload, the lights, the noise, the choices. I now won’t go in without noise-cancelling headphones.” “I can remember exactly which part of the jigsaw I did during each scene. It’s one of the few times I can be still without feeling guilty.” By 2023, worn down by decades of confusion, anxiety and overcompensation, Isobel began reading about ADHD in women. Within minutes, she recognised herself. Autism explained the rest. In November 2023, she received a formal ADHD diagnosis, with clinicians confirming she also met criteria for Autism. “I cried with relief and grief in equal measure. Relief because my life finally made sense. Grief because I’d spent so long thinking I was failing at things everyone else found easy.” With clarity came a shift for Isobel. Rather than continue the career path she had known, Isobel recognised that her diagnosis

had opened a new direction, one where she could use her lived experience to support others. Isobel retrained as an ADHD coach and founded At the Millpond, supporting neurodivergent adults, mostly women aged 18–80, to build executive functioning skills, emotional regulation and self-understanding. Her work helps clients navigate time blindness, overwhelm, motivation, communication and sensory challenges, while also exploring the influence of sleep, hormones, trauma and environment. “Many of my clients arrive feeling broken or scattered. Once they understand their brain, everything changes. They stop blaming themselves. They start building strategies that work for who they actually are, not who they’ve been pretending to be.” Alongside coaching, Isobel consults with organisations on neuro-inclusive recruitment, workplace adjustments and leadership education, advocating for cultures where neurodivergent employees can thrive without masking or fear. “There’s still a huge gap between what employers say about inclusion and what neurodivergent people actually experience. So many are burning out not because of their neurodivergence, but because the workplace isn’t designed for different brains.” For Isobel, At the Millpond is both a new chapter and an act of realignment. “I can’t change what I went through, but I can help make the path shorter and kinder for others. Coaching isn’t a luxury, for many, it’s the first time they’ve felt hope. And hope changes everything.” For further information about At the Millpond and Isobel’s work, including ADHD coaching and neuro-inclusion consultancy, please visit www.AtTheMillpond.co.uk

Christmas tree recycling scheme Local charity, Treetops Hospice, has once again opened bookings for its popular Treecycling scheme – helping residents across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire recycle their real Christmas trees while supporting local hospice care. Between Wednesday 7 and Friday 9 January, Treetops’ volunteers will collect and recycle trees from selected postcodes in exchange for a recommended donation of £15 or more. Based in Risley, Treetops Hospice provides vital end-of-life nursing care and emotional support for adults with life-limiting conditions, people who have been bereaved, and their families. Last year, the charity recycled more than 1,500 trees, raising over £24,000 – enough to fund 225 nights of specialist nursing care for patients in their own homes. The Treecycling campaign is proudly supported by local waste management and recycling company Ward, which provides free skips to Treetops at various collection points across the region and facilitates all recycling, making the scheme possible. Ward has championed Treetops’ efforts

As part of Giving Tuesday, Nottingham Playhouse has launched a fundraising campaign focused on its auditorium seat dedications, called ‘Your Seat. Your Story.’ Giving Tuesday is a day that inspires millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate their favourite charities. Nottingham Playhouse is highlighting its Seat Dedications as a way to provide a meaningful, long-lasting gift that brings joy to the recipient whilst also supporting Nottingham Playhouse as a charity. Your Seat. Your Story. features individuals who have dedicated a seat telling their very personal stories – in these cases, to each other, and to their grandchildren – and many corporate organisations and famous names who have dedicated a seat over the years, including Sir Paul Smith, Sir Ian McKellen and Richard Eyre. Watch Maggie and Trudy, Simon and Caroline tell their stories on YouTube.

since 2018, ensuring the collection and recycling process runs smoothly each year. Kevin Deller, National Construction Waste Manager from Ward, said: “As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and supporting our local communities, it’s a pleasure to be able to support Treetops again this year. “By providing processing facilities and supporting with transportation, we can ensure real trees are recycled responsibly whilst raising funds for such an important local cause.” Vic Rocca, Treetops Relationships Manager – Key Events, commented: “Our Treecycling scheme takes the hassle out of getting rid of your Christmas tree when the festive season is over. Our amazing volunteers collect it straight from your doorstep, saving you all the mess and effort. “Every donation helps us continue 310 people currently hold Seat Dedications in the historic Nottingham Playhouse auditorium. People choose to dedicate a seat for many reasons: to remember loved ones, to showcase a love of theatre or to mark a particular milestone. As a charity, the funds raised from seat dedications go on to support not just the work on stage, but the transformative experiences brought to adults, young people and vulnerable groups through the over 60 different programmes offered by the Participation team. From cutting edge drama like Punch to gripping adaptations of classics like Animal Farm, exciting brand-new productions like Dear Evan Hansen to the glittering annual pantomime, Nottingham Playhouse means a lot to many people. If you’ve been moved to tears or fits of laughter, theatre can have a lasting impact and builds memories to be cherished long after the curtain calls.

providing essential nursing care and emotional support for local people and families when they need it most.” The charity is also appealing for volunteers to help with collections. “If you don’t have a real tree this year, you can still get involved in Treecycling by joining our team of volunteers,” added Vic. “It’s a great way to start the new year by giving back to your local community.”

Each seat dedication is a personalised, printed plaque that sits on a chosen seat in the auditorium for 10 years. The cost of £300 is equivalent to £30 a year or £2.50 a month over the same period. There is also the opportunity to purchase a Seat Dedication in perpetuity, which is a very generous way to support the theatre.

The LIVE Awards showcases the outstanding companies, teams and individuals that make up the UK’s world-renowned industry. The scoop for the DHP Family venue on Pelham Street makes them a double champion after winning at Grassroots Venue: Spirit of the Scene at the Music Week awards earlier this year.

11

Making it a great night for Nottingham, the Ticketing Service award went to a fellow music company based in the city Gigantic Tickets. Accepting the Grassroots Champion award at the ceremony at East London’s Troxy were DHP Family MD George Akins and promoter Joseph Patten along with the venue’s GM Steve Walsh and promotions manager Sam Keirl. Of the win, Akins said: “It’s amazing to have The Bodega recognised once again for its brilliance on the grassroots circuit. The award is testament to the hard work of our teams, as well as the love the venue gets from the incredible bands we have through the doors and the customers, new and old, who come to spend time with us there. “Venues like The Bodega and independent businesses like ours make up an important network in the music ecosystem for artists, and an affordable entry point for fans to enjoy the live bands they love, but it’s a really tough time for a lot of them right now. “We’ve been very fortunate in our success, however, it is vital that the industry and government support and fight to protect the grassroots scene, where many artists hone their craft and where generations of music-lovers have enjoyed countless brilliant nights.” The title for The Bodega comes after the 220 cap venue marked 25 years playing host to the most exciting upand-coming new artists around, from rising local talent to nationally and internationally touring newcomers. Just last week, The Bodega hosted a brand new festival ‘Paint By Numbers’ to showcase some of the most exciting new acts around to a sold out and appreciative audience. The all dayer - which also ran in Bristol - featured Porji, Bloodworm, My First Time, Vona Vella and Marvin’s Revenge. In 2025, The Bodega provided 150 slots for Nottingham-based musicians to perform across headline shows, support and festivals that take place at the venue. Its place at the beating heart of the local music scene sees it being the hometown venue of choice for artists - from Do Nothing hosting their SXSW-fundraiser show to the fast-rising Divorce choosing to stage a sold out four-night residency over playing a larger capacity venue.

Sleaford Mods also played a sold out show for the 10 year anniversary of their album ‘Divide and Exit’, making it their first Nottingham show in 18 months as they returned to the intimate grassroots venues where it all began. In July this year, Bodega went on the road to host The Bodega New Music stage at Splendour Festival, which was also shortlisted for the Major Festival Award at Wednesday’s ceremony. The venue’s taste-making influence saw local rising artists such as Bloodworm and Davoli performing to festival-goers attending the event headlined by Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs. Recent shows at the venue include AJ Tracey, Anna Erhard, Benefits, Ducks Ltd, GANS, Gurriers, Man/Woman/Chainsaw, Nadia Reid, Nieve Ella, Nell Mescal, Our Girl, Panic Shack, PINS, Prima Queen, SOFY,

Sorry, Sunday (1994), and Welly. The little venue on Pelham Street has consistently punched above its weight across its 25 years since its very first gig on 30 November 1999 headlined by Shack and supported by Turin Brakes.

Its timeline is littered with huge names such as The White Stripes, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Florence + The Machine, Mumford & Sons, Haim, Scissor Sisters, AnneMarie, Charli XCX, Jamie T, Wolf Alice, The 1975, Lewis Capaldi, Tom Grennan and Arlo Parks with the more recent years seeing Soft Play, Amyl And the Sniffers, IDLES, Shame, Yard Act, Fat Dog and The Last Dinner Party.

Sonia Friedman Productions and ATG Productions are delighted to announce the 2025/2026 UK tour of the multi Olivier Award-winning hit musical SUNNY AFTERNOON. Producer Sonia Friedman said, “From the very first workshop we produced, when I heard that incredible music played live in the room, I knew I had to produce this show. The songs don’t just get under your skin – they live in your veins; they stay with you forever. Paired with such honest, powerful storytelling, Sunny Afternoon became one of the most unforgettable theatre experiences of my life. To see it go on to win multiple Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, was simply extraordinary – but what really matters to me is that the spirit of The Kinks’ music and their story still connect so deeply with audiences today. I’ve missed this show, so I’m beyond thrilled that it’s back on the road, giving new generations the chance to experience – or relive – the sheer joy, energy and heart of Sunny Afternoon. Huge congratulations to the brilliant company keeping its spirit alive.”

Ray Davies added, “We’ve assembled a fantastic company to retell our story and look forward to seeing them breathe new life into the production on tour. I hope SUNNY AFTERNOON will be a muchneeded tonic for people.” SUNNY AFTERNOON celebrates the raw energy, passion and timeless sound of one of Britain’s most iconic bands, THE KINKS. Charting the euphoric highs and agonising lows, it tells their story through an incredible back catalogue of charttoppers, including “You Really Got Me,” “Lola,” and “All Day and All of the Night.” SUNNY AFTERNOON was the recipient of four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music for Ray Davies. Set against the backdrop of Britain on the cusp of the rebellious '60s, SUNNY AFTERNOON is an exhilarating and moving celebration of the music, life, and the band that changed it all.

Celebrating the raw energy and timeless sound of one of HEADER rewrite my version, but they did expand it. 13 INSERT COPY Britain’s most iconic bands, The Kinks, the four-time Olivier Award winning musical SUNNY AFTERNOON returns for a UK The show captures both the highs and the struggles of The tour, coming to the Theatre Royal Nottingham from Tuesday Kinks’ journey. What memories stand out most vividly for you 17 to Saturday 21 February 2026. when you look back on that era? The contrast, I think. One day we were scraping by in Featuring an original story and music and lyrics by The Kinks Muswell Hill, the next we were banned from America. There frontman, Ray Davies, the musical charts the euphoric were moments of absolute chaos, and others of beautiful highs and agonising lows through their catalogue of chartclarity. Although we didn't appreciate it at the time, the topping hits, including “You Really Got Me,” “Lola,” and “All band celebrated being at the height of British culture, Day and All of the Night.” everything felt bright and exciting after coming out of the darkness of the Second World War.

We caught up with Ray Davies ahead of the tour to talk about taking his story to the stage, the legacy of his music and the next generation of fans.

Sunny Afternoon has been such a success on stage—what has it been like for you seeing your songs and story come to life on stage? Daunting at first. I was working on the storyline on and off for three years, but in many ways the story is contained within the songs. The songs were written in such specific moments of my life and now they’ve been reinterpreted, given new context. It’s humbling, and sometimes a bit surreal, to see the audience connect to those moments as if they’re happening now. It’s proof that the music still has a pulse. You were closely involved in shaping the show. How did you approach revisiting your own past and turning The Kinks’ history into a musical? With caution at the beginning so I pretended it was about somebody else. I didn’t want it to be just another jukebox musical. I wanted Sunny Afternoon to have heart, to show what it really felt like to live through that madness. We approached it as a piece of storytelling, not nostalgia. I went back to the songs and the memories behind them and tried to weave them into something honest. It wasn’t about polishing the past, it was about exploring it with the rawness that inspired the songs in the first place. Did collaborating with director Edward Hall and writer Joe Penhall challenge your version of events in any way? When you’ve lived something, you think you know the story inside out, but Edward (Hall) and Joe (Penhall) held up a mirror to it. They’d ask questions I hadn’t thought about in years and that made me reassess a lot of things. They didn’t

Many of the themes in Sunny Afternoon - youthful ambition, creative freedom, the turbulence of the 1960s - still feel very timely today. Why do you think this story continues to resonate with new generations? Every generation goes through its own version of rebellion. For us it was a turbulent time of change, the class system was still there, but it began to feel that working class kids could also start to move up the social ladder. The 60s were our revolution, but the spirit of that time - questioning authority, chasing authenticity - that never really disappears. I think people see themselves in that struggle, whether they’re forming a band or just trying to figure out who they are. That’s timeless. Putting so many of your hits into a musical must have been quite a process. What has it meant to showcase your back catalogue all in one place? It’s been a gift. Songs like ‘Lola’ or ‘Days’ have their own lives, but when you hear them alongside ‘Dead End Street’ or ‘Sunny Afternoon’ you see the full picture. The musical gave me the chance to connect those dots for people, to show how the songs talk to each other. And it reminded me too, why I wrote them in the first place. The production returns to tour the UK, following its previous sell-out run. What do you hope people will take away from the experience this time around? The hope is that audiences will be able to see a glimpse of our history while enjoying a great night out. If people walk out humming the songs, that’s lovely. I hope they leave with a sense of joy, but also reflection. It’s a story about resilience, really, about keeping your head when the world’s spinning too fast.

Bakery sells over 1m sausage rolls in 2025

Birds Bakery has revealed a snapshot of the products that defined 2025 and the treats that its customers simply couldn’t get enough of.

The family-run bakery, which has been going since 1919, has 62 stores across the East Midlands and is proving just as popular as ever with another year of standout sales of its sweet treats and baked goods. Birds sold a whopping 23m products this year but when it came to the item that customers enjoyed the most in 2025, there was a clear winner. Birds’ Sausage Roll claimed the top spot with more than one million sold, closely followed by some of the bakery’s most iconic sweet treats: • Caramel Doughnuts - 734,504 • Cream Doughnuts - 510,373 • Egg Custards - 453,008 Jamie Bird, joint managing director at Birds Bakery, said: “Selling more than a million sausage rolls in a single year is incredible. It shows just how much love people across the East Midlands - and far beyond - have for our products. It’s been a phenomenal year and we’re excited to see what 2026 brings.” Beyond its bestselling classics, the bakery’s ovens worked overtime in 2025, with more than two million doughnuts baked alone.

This stunning new restaurant combines Ivy’s signature flair with timeless elegance and an inviting atmosphere. My favourite kind of restaurant will always be independents; however there is room in most big cities to welcome chain restaurants. They often save beautiful buildings, offer value for money and are reliably consistent. The Ivy offers a bit more with glamour and a touch of fine dining (read they have table cloths and very nice crockery). On that note I was really excited to hear about The Ivy opening in Nottingham, it is long overdue (Leeds has 2, for gods sake) and would bring the old Cafe Rouge building back to hospitality. An absolute bonus if you have no desire to go shopping for mens clothes but appreciate gorgeous high ceilings and decadence. We booked to go for dinner with friends and arrived for a 19.30 booking a month after opening. We were warmly greeted and shown to the bar for a drink before our table was ready. The whole place is very grand and what it might miss for those who love maximalist interiors

it definitely makes up for with the addition of Christmas decorations (it was mid November). The place screamed ‘BUSY’ and I found it a touch overwhelming. Early Christmas decorations were like fuel to a fire with The Northerner but we ordered cocktails and had a look at the menu. I am now at an age where I tend to preview a menu so I can enjoy the night as much as possible – this is also a small concession to my dreadful eyesight. If you too struggle; look and decide before getting there, the menu is written in size 6 font. As I lent on the bar and sipped my delicious cocktail I was a little disappointed at how sticky it was and then I realised the staff are nearly a metre away from the actual bar top (with speed rails, drip trays etc) with very little chance to wipe down between visitors. Our table was to the left of the entrance in a raised area and I was relieved not to be in the

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

main dining room – although the buzz communicated an enviable trade and table turnover. As I walked to the table it struck me how diverse the customers were. Big work parties, families, older couples, date nights and groups of friends in their fifties – the fact I am remarking on it made me realise that most of the restaurants I go to dominated by one tribe and this felt ‘refreshing’.

FOOD & DRINK

17

We decided we were going to have 3 courses and ordered a bottle of wine, service was attentive but a little slow and they keep the wine chilled in communal wine buckets just far enough away from the table to mean you can’t lean to get the bottle. Great if your waiter is ON IT and keeps your glasses full, not so great if they are so busy they don’t even realise when you have finished the bottle and are trying to get their attention to order more. At one point I double ordered more water as we hadn’t seen anyone passing in quite a while. For starters The Northerner had the cheese souffle and I went for the smoked salmon, my smoked salmon was simply served but was laid out in such an opulent way I felt an abundance of generosity from the kitchen – clever. Unfortunately The Northerners souffle missed enough delicious cheese sauce to keep it from being a cooked egg white when you got to the middle and the slight char made it bitter. When my main course of seabass arrived I was impressed by the crisp skin and then remembered….. delicate fish….. crisp skin……. eurgh. The fish was overcook and fibrous. The sauce that came with it was a delicious accompaniment and I even tried to eat the fish skin thinking ‘well if you are willing to cremate the fish I should try and enjoy that part you did it for’ but alas fish skin is not for me. The Northerners Shepherds Pie was presented nicely (so hard with a pie) but I wonder whoever wants to chomp on a sprig of charred rosemary? It had a deep, comforting flavour and the extra jug of gravy on the side made The Northerner very happy. You’ve got to love a cliche. There was a definite need for some kind of vegetable side dish for a balanced meal but The Northerner laughs in the face of balance and ordered a side of chips. At this point in the evening the slower service was beginning to show as tables around us complained and you could see their evenings fraying at the edges. I was not deterred though, smoked salmon, 1 seabass fillet and some mushrooms meant I was still hungry and wanted a dessert. We were told when the menu’s were delivered that they had run out of Sticky Toffee Pudding, I picked my jaw off the table, swallowed my disappointment and decided to console myself with an Apple Tart.

The tart came on wafer thin shards of pastry and in the other hand the waiter held a blow torch, a copper pan and a smile. Did I want my Apple Tart ‘flaming’ with Calvados? Another person (Rob) at our table that had ordered the same enthusiastically agreed and during the time his was ‘flambeed’ I decided that no, I didn’t want the same. After warming the copper pan and setting light to the contents it was poured over the tart after 5 seconds. The booze hit the plate to lots of ahhhs and oooohhhhs and then immediately went out. The tart swam in the booze and being a lover of crisp pastry this strengthened my resolve when the waited got more forceful with his insistence. We

all got started and Rob choked as the raw alcohol hit his nose after his first mouthful. The Northerner tried both tarts and agreed that although the flambeed one was almost inedible, without the booze mine was pretty boring. For what it is worth I quite liked it and was grateful for the hole it filled, would I order it again? Probably not. The theme of the pudding is the theme of the review unfortunately. Everything was ‘nice’ but needed to be a little bit better for how much they are charging. I probably won’t go back to The Ivy unless I have a work event or big family do but I have no doubt it will be busy for many years.

From savory seafood to sweet treats, every country brings its own flavor to the festive table. Here’s a culinary journey of Christmas Day traditions around the world.

Italy: Feast of Seven Fishes In Italy, Christmas Eve often steals the spotlight with the famous “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” a seafood extravaganza celebrating the nativity. On Christmas Day, however, families typically enjoy roasted meats, pasta dishes like lasagna or tortellini in broth, and panettone—a sweet, fluffy bread studded with dried fruit.

Japan: KFC and Christmas Cake Surprisingly, fried chicken is a staple of Christmas in Japan. Thanks to a clever marketing campaign in the 1970s, families flock to KFC for a “party barrel” of chicken. Dessert is just as important: Christmas cake, usually a light sponge layered with strawberries and whipped cream, is enjoyed on December 25th.

Mexico: Tamales and Bacalao Mexican Christmas feasts often extend from Christmas Eve into Christmas Day. Tamales— corn dough stuffed with meats, cheese, or vegetables—are a central dish. Families may also enjoy bacalao (salted cod) cooked in a tomato-based sauce with olives and capers, followed by sweet treats like buñuelos, a crispy, sugar-dusted pastry.

Germany: Roast Goose and Stollen In Germany, roast goose often takes center stage, accompanied by red cabbage, potato dumplings, and gravy. For dessert, families slice into stollen, a fruit-filled, powdered-sugar-covered bread that has been a holiday favorite for centuries.

Australia: Barbecue on the Beach Christmas in Australia falls during summer, so many Australians trade the oven for the grill. Barbecues featuring seafood, lamb,

or prawns are common, often enjoyed outdoors with a salad or fresh tropical fruits. Pavlova, a meringue-based dessert topped with fresh fruit, adds a sweet, seasonal finish.

Sweden: Julbord In Sweden, the “julbord” is a lavish buffet featuring herring, gravlax (cured salmon), meatballs, sausages, and a special Christmas ham glazed with mustard. The meal is complemented by lussekatter, saffron-flavored buns shaped like an “S,” which brighten up the winter celebrations.

Ethiopia: Doro Wat and Injera Ethiopian Christmas, called Ganna, is celebrated on January 7th according to the Ethiopian Orthodox calendar. The centerpiece of the feast is doro wat, a spicy chicken stew, served with injera, a sourdough flatbread. Families gather after attending a church service for this rich and communal meal.

From the icy winters of Scandinavia to the sunny beaches of Australia, Christmas meals tell a story of culture, tradition, and flavor. While the dishes differ, one thing remains universal: the joy of sharing food with loved ones during the most magical time of the year.

Eggnog A true Christmas classic, eggnog is just as tasty any time of the year and is easier to make than you think. The origins of this old recipe show that it was favoured by aristocrats as an indulgent drink and has been a favourite for centuries with very little changing in its ingredients over the years.

Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked meringues onto a small tray, and proceed with cooking the remaining meringue using the same method. 4. TO LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE Gifts in Wills from our generous supporters have enabled LNAA to become a leading Helicopter Emergency Medical Service in the UK.

In 1991, the board of the Lincolnshire Ambulance NHS Trust decided to explore the possibility of providing an air ambulance for Lincolnshire. With a Board of Trustees in place and after three years of planning and public fundraising, the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance lifted our first patient on May 13, 1994. In those early day our helicopter, an ex-Police Bolkow aircraft, only flew when we had sufficient funds meaning it was often grounded for months at a time while fundraising took place. In 2000, we said farewell to our Bolkow and moved to a new generation of aircraft, an MD902 Explorer. This helicopter could accommodate a crew of four – one pilot, a doctor and two paramedics. Ten years later we upgraded to a newer MD902 and by 2013 we started undertaking missions from 7am to 7pm. In June 2017, we said goodbye to our MD902 and began flying an AgustaWestland 169 – a top of the range Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) aircraft. Just three months after its arrival our crew were carrying blood on board, allowing them to deliver potentially

life-saving blood transfusions for the very first time. In 2021, we took delivery of our new 6th generation AW169, which along with our Critical Care Cars, enables us to provide a 24/7 service, attending an average of four potentially life-saving missions, every day, 365 days a year. Gifts in Wills allow our state-of-the-art helicopter, critical car cars, highly skilled pilots, HEMS paramedics and doctors to continue giving some of the most critically ill and injured people their very best chance of survival in what is often their greatest

hour of need – in fact, they fund half of our missions. Since we first began in 1994, we have proudly undertaken over 30,000 potentially life-saving missions. We receive no direct government funding and are not part of the NHS, which means gifts in Wills quite literally help us save lives.

A gift in your Will, no matter size, will help us be there for people in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and beyond, for many years to come. Together we can continue to save lives.

why making one is a must in January

In January we often focus on improvements to things like weight loss or becoming healthier but it’s also a great time to ensure your finances and long term plans get a refresh as well. And with the big changes in the budget it’s really important that families ensure they get professional advice to maximise what they pass on to their loved ones. January is a time when people reflect on goals and responsibilities. Estate planning, though easy to put off, should be incorporated into this ‘fresh start’ mindset. If you are motivated to get more exercise or quit a bad habit, make sure you are also using that motivation to put your finances in order and take care of long-term planning. Come January, we’ve gone through the big spending part of the year. People are more aware of their annual income and outgoings which is very useful to plan for things like regular gifts to family members which can be exempt from Inheritance Tax if they meet certain criteria. And with the end of the month the deadline for self-assessment returns, it’s a great opportunity to get these hefty tasks

which no one looks forward to sorted and filed away. If you’re one of the millions of people completing your tax accounts in January, there’s not going to be a more convenient time to also address the issue of what will happen after you’ve passed. Much of estate planning is about maximising what you can leave to loved ones and minimising what goes to the state, so if that number you’re sending to HMRC by the 31st January is unpleasant, imagine what might happen if you don’t write your Will.

set the wheels in motion.” Once the Will is complete, there’s a huge sense of relief. Starting the year with that responsibility finished lets you focus on goals, not worries.

Five reasons why you should you make a Will: 1. You stay in control. A Will lets you decide who inherits your money, property, and possessions. Without one, the law decides for you, which might not reflect your wishes.

It might seem a bit macabre to think about your mortality after the festive season, but spending time with our loved ones helps us focus on what is important. The Christmas season often brings families together, sometimes for the only time that year.

2. You protect your family. If you have children, a Will allows you to name guardians who would look after them if anything happened to you. It’s one of the most important decisions you can make as a parent.

It allows us to focus on what matters most and perhaps notice if there are some amongst us who are struggling or finding out about exciting plans children and grandchildren have for their future. This can make it an ideal time to have those conversations about Wills, emergency planning should you become unable to handle your own affairs, and use January to

3. You avoid family disagreements. When your wishes are clearly set out, there’s less chance of confusion or disputes between relatives. A Will can prevent unnecessary stress at an already difficult time. 4. You can remember special people or causes. A Will lets you leave gifts to friends, stepchildren, or charities that matter to you. It’s a lasting way to make a difference. 5. You make things simpler for your loved ones. A valid Will helps speed up the legal process and can reduce the tax your estate pays, saving both time and money.

We offer a Grant Finder search service to identify funding options, and during 2025 we provided approximately £100,000 of grants to local businesses through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Using Government funding we have procured a business advisory service to assist businesses with advice and guidance on how to grow, set goals and build resilience. We also work with local businesses to create tailored retail campaigns aimed at boosting local spend, such as our recently launched Newark and Sherwood Gift Card. GROWING YOUR BUSINESS Growing a business is an exciting journey, but it also comes with challenges that require clarity, strategy, and reliable guidance. Whether you are launching a startup or scaling an established company, the advice you follow can significantly influence your direction and long-term success. In a world filled with information, opinions, and ever-changing market conditions, seeking proper and correct advice becomes not only helpful, but essential.

One of the first steps in scaling any business is understanding your current position and defining where you want to go. This means taking a realistic look at your resources, strengths, weaknesses, and the opportunities available within your industry. Sound advice often begins with proper self-assessment. When you clearly understand what you have to offer and how you differ from competitors, you can make better strategic decisions. Advisors, mentors, or consultants can help you gain this clarity by providing objective insights and raising questions that you may overlook when too close to the day-today operations. Another critical factor in business growth is developing a well-structured plan. While passion and ambition can get you started, growth requires focus, direction, and measurable goals. Experienced advisors can help you build strategies around marketing, operations, finance, and customer acquisition. They offer tested perspectives, allowing you to avoid common pitfalls and adopt practices that have proven effective for similar businesses. In many cases, the right advice can save you months—or even years—of trial and error.

Seeking proper advice also means turning to reliable sources. Not every opinion will be relevant, and not every expert understands your business model. Surround yourself with individuals who have actual experience in the areas you need help with. This may include industry mentors, financial advisors, legal professionals, or business coaches. Joining business communities, industry associations, or entrepreneurial networks can also expand your access to knowledgeable voices. Choosing the right advisors helps ensure that the guidance you receive is grounded in reality, not based on assumptions. In addition to external advice, listening to your customers is one of the most valuable sources of insight. Customer feedback can guide your product development, pricing strategies, and marketing decisions. Understanding your audience’s needs helps you grow in a direction that matches demand rather than assumptions. Proper advice often comes from simply paying attention to the people who use your product or service every day. It is also important to stay adaptable. The business world changes rapidly— technology evolves, trends shift, and competitors emerge. Growth-minded businesses consistently seek updated advice to remain relevant. Continuing education, professional development, and periodic consultations with experts help keep your strategies fresh and competitive. The willingness to learn and adjust is often what separates growing businesses from stagnant ones. Finally, remember that the best advice is only useful if you act on it.

Implementation is key. Applying what you learn—whether it involves improving operations, redesigning your brand, or restructuring your financial approach— brings tangible results.

In short, growing your business requires vision, strategic planning, and the willingness to seek and apply proper, correct advice. With the right guidance and consistent effort, your business can move confidently toward long-term success.

What is a prenuptial agreement? INSERT INSERT HEADER HEADER COPY COPY

35

Emma Davies, Partner and Solicitor head of our expert Family Team, gives some tips for avoiding disputes. What is a prenuptial agreement?

It is a contract between the parties to an intended marriage or civil partnership that seeks to regulate their affairs in the event that the relationship ends. No one ever embarks on a marriage expecting to separate, but the sad fact is that not all marriages work out and this is why you should protect yourself and your assets. Prenuptial agreements are becoming increasingly popular and are relied on as a way of protecting family wealth and preserving assets. It is important to note that prenuptial agreements are not just for the wealthy. They are just as important in cases involving fewer assets. Financial arrangements will usually be the main focus of a prenup, but they can cover anything such as the arrangements for children or the most appropriate jurisdiction for the divorce.

When do I need to get a prenuptial agreement?

Although prenuptial agreements are not legally binding in the UK, they are taken into consideration by the Court as long as certain conditions are satisfied.

One of those conditions is that the prenuptial agreement must have been made at least 28 days before the wedding or civil partnership. If the agreement is made too late, it can allow one of the parties to successfully argue upon divorce that they entered into the agreement under duress. Generally, we suggest that couples instruct a solicitor at the very least four months before their wedding to allow enough time to • exchange financial disclosure, • negotiate an agreement, • allow their solicitor draft the agreement and • allow the other party to seek independent legal advice on the agreement reached.

What if I have left it too late?

If your wedding date you can still protect your assets, by considering entering into a postnuptial agreement after you are married.

Emma Davies

If you are planning to get married and are concerned about protecting your assets but you think that you may have left it too late, then it is important to obtain specialist legal advice as soon as possible.

Getting your car looking like new After a car accident, one of the most common steps in restoring a vehicle to its original condition is getting it resprayed with new paintwork.

Once the primer has dried, the new paint is sprayed on in layers. Multiple coats are often applied to ensure even coverage and to achieve a highquality, durable finish. Finally, a clear

coat is applied to protect the paintwork and provide a glossy, smooth finish. This process can take several days, depending on the extent of the damage and the quality of the work being done.

The need for respraying typically arises when the car suffers visible damage to its paint, such as scratches, dents, or more severe bodywork damage. While repairs to the vehicle’s frame and structure are necessary, the paint job is crucial for both aesthetic and protective reasons. The process of respraying a car begins with a thorough assessment of the damage. Any dents or scratches that are present will need to be repaired or filled in before the painting process begins. This is followed by sanding down the existing paint to create a smooth surface for the new coat of paint to adhere to. If the car has any rust, it must be addressed as well, as failing to treat rust can lead to further deterioration over time. Next, the car is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. This ensures that the paint applies evenly and does not get contaminated. After that, a primer is usually applied to provide better adhesion for the paint and to prevent corrosion.

Getting a car resprayed not only restores its appearance but also helps protect the vehicle from the elements, keeping it in good condition and maintaining its value.

The tradition of seasonal Glasshouse displays at Clumber Park has delighted visitors for several years, but this year’s Christmas showcase brings together more handmade and homegrown elements than ever before. Visitors will discover Christmas trees adorned with decorations lovingly made by volunteers, including hand-knitted stockings and jumpers, intricate book-art baubles, and dried flowers and foliage harvested directly from the garden. A handcrafted wooden Wendy house and wooden trees, also produced by volunteers, nestle among Christmas bulbs grown by the team. Fresh foliage garlands drape overhead, creating a warm and inviting festive atmosphere. At the heart of the Glasshouse sits a giant Elf which is part of the park’s The Elf on the Shelf ® sculpture trail, adding a playful accent without drawing attention away from the artistry and effort that define the display. Senior Gardener, Dale praised the combined dedication of staff and volunteers saying, “The whole display is inspired by nature. It’s homegrown, handmade, and entirely shaped by the incredible creativity of the team. Every element reflects months of planning, growing, crafting, and care. It really is our most ambitious display yet.” The Gardens team, made up of 9 staff and 94 volunteers, have been creating seasonal displays for 5 years, but this year’s Christmas installation represents a

new level of ambition and collaborative achievement. The display will continue to evolve over the coming weeks as more and more Christmas bulbs burst into flower with Narcissus, Hyacinths and Amaryllis filling the Glasshouse with colour and scent.

Visitors can explore the display throughout the festive period which runs up to and including Sunday 4th January

Jake Bugg at Rock City, 2020

Beat The Streets, the music festival originated by DHP Family to raise funds to help homeless people, will return on Sunday 25 January 2026

Marvin's Revenge

Now a popular fixture in the city’s event calendar, artists announced today include Archy & the Astronauts, Archie Orme, Commons, Drury Hill, Hunch Power, Josie Beth, Louis Guy, Make Strangers, Part Time Animals, People Laughing, seegz, The Rossettis and White Town. Ahead of a 17 date national tour supporting Suede, Bloodworm are on the cusp of a milestone year. With comparisons to Bauhaus and The Cure, the trio veer to the darker side of post punk, appeared at Splendour this year and are fast building a loyal following. Bored Marsh played to a packed out Rough Trade at the previous Beat The Streets and have just sold out The Bodega, their biggest headline show to date. Dring is an up-and-coming singersongwriter who had audiences spellbound at Hockley Hustle this year. Dring uses her songwriting as a form of storytelling, taking inspiration from folk and indie artists, such as Joni Mitchell, Hozier, and Marcus Mumford. Marvin’s Revenge create dark, grungy soundscapes paired with cryptic lyrics and have made a name for themselves as one of the most exciting new live altrock bands in the UK. One of Splendour’s ‘Future Sound of Nottingham’ openers this year Saffron Gray, Nottingham’s very own RnB princess, will be bringing the grooves.

Music producer White Town, aka Jyoti Prakash Mishra, is the man behind the number one single ‘Your Woman’, the song he sings from a female perspective with an infectious trumpet line sample that is a definite earworm. The multi-venue festival in Nottingham has now surpassed £554,000 raised in total for Framework to help end homelessness across Nottingham. Joseph Patten, DHP Family, said: “Beat The Streets has always been about bringing the Notts music community together in support of a worthy cause, while celebrating the amazing artists of our city. We're happy to announce a great selection of these acts for 2026 today, it's always great to support new artists at the event and there's always something new to get excited about. There's plenty on offer and we're looking forward to raising even more vital funds for Framework with your help!”

bar sales, merchandise and the tombola go to the charity. Beat The Streets has seen hundreds of artists from across the region take to the stages over the years including Jake Bugg, Sleaford Mods, Grace Petrie, Ferocious Dog, Do Nothing, Divorce, JayaHadaDream and GIRLBAND! to name just a few. Local artists can still get in touch with the organisers to express their interest in playing the festival, taking place across Rock City, Rescue Rooms, Stealth, The Bodega and Rough Trade. Beat The Streets tickets, giving access to all participating venues throughout the whole day, are available for the recommended donation of £20. Additional donations can be made at the time of purchase. www.alttickets. com/beat-the-streets-tickets

All the money raised will go towards completing the new 20 self-contained homes for former rough sleepers. Framework will also provide round the clock support to help the residents of Lee House in Basford turn around their lives. Beat The Streets organisers will soon also be releasing a number of special items for sale to raise further funds, including a backstage tour of Rock City, a golden ticket to every Rock City show next year and a Splendour backstage tour. As well as the ticket income, all revenue from the

The Art of the Countdown INSERT HEADER COPY

60

As the final hours of the year slip away, anticipation builds, of resolutions whispered, champagne poured, and the unmistakable thrill of a fresh start.

New Year’s Eve isn’t just another holiday; it’s a spectacle, a sentiment, and, for the host, a chance to create a night guests will remember long after the confetti has settled. Whether you’re planning a glitter-drenched bash or a cozy, candlelit gathering, here’s your guide to ringing in the new year with style.

SET THE SCENE: ATMOSPHERE IS EVERYTHING

New Year’s Eve is the ultimate excuse for a showstopping atmosphere. Lean into the drama with metallic accents, warm lighting, and textures that shimmer under the glow of fairy lights. Consider a signature palette—classic gold and black, wintery silver and white, or even an unexpected pop of jewel tones. Lighting Tip: Ditch the overheads. Opt for string lights, lanterns, and candles to bathe your space in a celebratory glow. Photo Moment: Create a low-effort photo wall with a sequined backdrop or streamers. Add props like tiaras, hats, and oversized glasses for midnight snapshots.

ELEVATE THE MENU WITH SIMPLE, LUXE BITES

NYE demands food that feels indulgent but doesn’t keep you in the kitchen all night. Think bubbly-friendly finger foods, small enough to snack on while dancing or mingling. Savoury Ideas: Truffle popcorn, mini crab cakes, charcuterie boards, and bite-sized sliders. Sweet Touches: Champagne-infused gummies, dark chocolate truffles, or a minimalist dessert bar. The Showstopper: Craft a cocktail that captures your party’s theme—sparkling elderflower spritz, pomegranate fizz, or a smoky whiskey concoction for a moodier vibe.

MUSIC THAT MOVES THE NIGHT ALONG

Every great party has a soundtrack. Start with lowkey lounge beats as guests arrive, build to danceworthy hits as the countdown nears, and wind down with nostalgic classics after midnight. Pro tip: Create a 3-hour playlist with intentional peaks and valleys so you’re not fumbling with your

phone while guests are raising their glasses.

THE COUNTDOWN MOMENT: MAKE IT MAGIC

Midnight deserves a little choreography. Hand out sparklers, confetti poppers, or bubbles right before the countdown. Have your screen tuned to the live ball drop or set up your own countdown animation. If you want a reflective twist, invite guests to write down a wish or intention to seal in the moment.

PLAN FOR COMFORT AND CONNECTION

The best parties balance spectacle with thoughtfulness. Stock a small “comfort station” with things like hand warmers (for outdoor patios), stain wipes, mints, and even slippers for guests who kick off their high heels after midnight. And remember: New Year’s Eve is about celebration, yes - but also connection. Carve out spaces for deep conversations: a quiet corner with plush seating, or a warm drink station where guests can slow down between toasts.

END WITH A GENTLE FADE-OUT

As the night winds down, steer the energy toward calm. Offer a late-night snack (breakfast sliders, pizza bites, or warm cookies), turn on soft lighting, and queue a mellow playlist. Nothing says “host with the most” like ensuring guests leave smiling - and safely.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

With thoughtful planning and a hint of glamour, your New Year’s Eve party can become the perfect bridge between what was and what could be. Whether you’re hosting ten people or fifty, the magic lies in the details: the flicker of lights, the sparkle of champagne, and the collective hope of a brand-new year.

The Christmas Tree Rash 64

INSERT HEADER COPY

As Christmas trees go up across the UK, skincare expert Danielle Louise, a skincare expert on the Fresha app, the world’s leading beauty and wellness booking platform, is warning of a lesser-known festive irritant: the Christmas Tree Rash — a seasonal flareup caused by pine sap, mould spores and sudden changes in indoor humidity. Danielle says December is the only month when she consistently sees clients presenting with the same pattern of irritation, and many never connect it to their tree.

Danielle Louise, a skincare expert on the Fresha app, explains:

“Every year in early December, I see an identical wave of clients with red, itchy or inflamed skin — especially around the neck, jawline and hairline. Most blame winter dryness, but once we talk about when their symptoms started, it almost always coincides with the day the tree went up.”

Two key triggers: Pine sap can irritate sensitised winter skin Pine oils naturally contain terpenes, which can aggravate compromised or dry skin. When the tree warms indoors, these oils become more airborne and settle on the skin and scalp. Mould spores from outdoor storage can circulate indoors Real trees often carry microscopic spores. In heated rooms with low humidity, these particles become airborne and can trigger irritation in people who are already reactive during winter.

The Perfect Storm: Heating + Cold Air + Pine Oils

“December creates a perfect storm for flare-ups,” Danielle says. “Cold air weakens the skin barrier, indoor heating dries it further, and then we add a large sap-producing tree into the mix. Even people who rarely react to anything can suddenly see irritation.”

Common symptoms include: • Itchy red patches along the neck, jawline or chest

• Scalp irritation or flaking • Eye-area redness or puffiness • Small bumps resembling contact dermatitis

Advice to Prevent Christmas Tree Rash

Keep the tree at least 1–2 metres from where you sit or sleep. Reduces exposure to airborne pine oils.

Shake or rinse the tree outdoors before decorating. This helps remove mould spores, dust and loose sap. Add moisture back into the air with a humidifier. Stronger skin barrier = reduced reactivity. Wear gloves when handling or decorating the tree. Prevents direct contact with sap. Switch to gentle, barrier-focused skincare for the first week. This helps the skin cope with any new irritants in the home.

How your heart handles the holidays INSERT HEADER COPY

65

With the season of feasts and festivities upon us, Dr Roy Jogiya, Chief Medical Adviser at Heart Research UK explains how overindulgence can sometimes do more than upset your stomach, it can affect your heart too. Indigestion or dyspepsia, is discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen that occurs during or after eating. Common symptoms include:

by excessive alcohol consumption, often during festive periods. Even healthy individuals with no prior heart conditions can be affected.

• A burning sensation in the chest (heartburn) • Feeling uncomfortably full or bloated

Dr Roy says: "We see a spike in heart-related emergencies around Christmas and New Year. Cold weather, emotional stress, large meals, and missed medications all contribute, but alcohol is a major factor."

• Bitter-tasting fluid rising into the mouth • Nausea "True indigestion usually responds well to antacids and doesn't cause breathlessness or sweating. It's often harmless and can be managed with simple lifestyle adjustments," explains Dr Roy.

Easing indigestion during the holidays If you are prone to indigestion, it can help to avoid rich or fatty foods and to eat smaller meals throughout the day. Staying hydrated with small sips of water may also ease symptoms, and antacids can be used if discomfort persists. However, Dr Roy cautions that not all chest discomfort should be dismissed as indigestion.

Holiday Heart Syndrome Holiday Heart Syndrome is a real and potentially serious condition that can mimic indigestion but has a very different cause. It refers to atrial fibrillation or other irregular heart rhythms triggered

How alcohol affects the heart Drinking alcohol can affect the heart's rhythm. It can lead to dehydration, cause imbalances in the body's salts, raise stress hormones, and even directly affect heart muscle. Alcohol can also disturb the nervous system that controls heart rate, making the heart beat faster or irregularly. Even moderate drinking can increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. Research shows that each extra drink per day raises the risk by about 8%, while binge drinking can trigger irregular heartbeats within hours.

Understanding Holiday Heart Syndrome Dr Roy urges people to stay aware of their heart during the festive season. Symptoms can appear within hours of heavy drinking and may include:

• A fluttering, pounding or racing heartbeat • Chest discomfort or pressure • Shortness of breath, even at rest • Dizziness or light-headedness • Fatigue or weakness • Sweating of feeling of anxiety "These symptoms can be mistaken for indigestion or stress, but if they appear after drinking alcohol or a large meal, and are accompanied by breathlessness

or chest pain, it's important to seek medical help straight away," advises Dr Roy.

Risk factors for Holiday Heart Syndrome The syndrome can affect anyone, but some people are more vulnerable. Those with undiagnosed heart conditions, high blood pressure, or diabetes may be at increased risk. People who binge drink, combine alcohol with salty foods, or face high stress and poor sleep during the festive season are also more likely to be affected.

Tips for a heart-healthy holiday The festive season is a time to enjoy good food and drinks, but small steps can help your heart stay happy too. Try to keep alcohol to one or two drinks per occasion and remember to sip water in between, as alcohol can dehydrate you. Choosing lighter, less salty, or fatty meals can also take the strain off your heart. Dr Roy says: "Sticking to your usual medications is important, even during the holidays. Most importantly, listen to your body, if something feels unusual, don't ignore it. Enjoy the holidays but be mindful. Your heart doesn't take a holiday, so take care of it."

You can still meet the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week, even during the holidays, by making a few simple tweaks to your routine. Lauren Hewitt, Associate Nutritionist at Heart Research UK, explains:

“Exercise doesn’t always have to mean going to the gym, playing a sport or running a marathon. It can be enjoying brisk winter walks with your family, Christmas Day bike rides, or even setting a timer for ten minutes and dancing in your kitchen.” Exercise is also one of the best energy boosters – and at such a busy time of year, with long car journeys and last-minute present shopping, we need all the energy we can get. Staying active helps you feel more alert, upbeat, and ready to take on the festivities, which

Join our 12-day festive fitness challenge to stay active and support your heart health throughout the holidays. It’s a fun, structured way to keep moving and feel great heading into the new year. Getting back on track after the break If you fall off the wagon, you won’t be alone, however, don’t throw in the towel after a few days off – remember we aren’t aiming for perfect, and some movement is better than none. The festive season brings a change of routine, and that’s completely normal. Getting back on track isn’t about punishing yourself for missed workouts or extra mince pies – it’s about gently rebuilding your habits and remembering why they matter.

Be active together

Start small – go for a walk, stretch while the kettle boils, or revisit a favourite workout that makes you feel good. Consistency will return quicker than you think, especially if you focus on how movement boosts your mood, supports your heart health and leaves you feeling energised. Amie Leckie, Health & Wellbeing Specialist says, “the key is to move forward with kindness, not guilt – every step counts toward a stronger, healthier you.”

Include gentle movement

Last January we dedicated a whole Healthy Tip on the subject of behaviour change – if you missed it, head there now to get some insight into habit formation to help you start 2026 strong.

Turn exercise into a social occasion – head out for a family walk, go ice skating, or enjoy a bike ride with friends. Amie Leckie, Health & Wellbeing Specialist at Heart Research UK, shares: “I head out on regular walks each week with my neighbour – it helps keep us both accountable, and we plan to keep up the habit over the festive period because it makes us feel energised and boosts our mood.” The Christmas season can be busy and stressful, so build in some slower-paced activities like yoga, Pilates, or simple stretching sessions. While everybody tolerates pain differently, getting a tattoo involves repeatedly piercing your skin’s top layer with a sharp needle, which is inevitably going to be painful, no matter which body part is getting inked. However, there are of course some body parts that are more painful than others. Tattoo artists at LLTattoo have revealed which body parts hurt the most to have tattooed, as well as expert tips on how to handle the pain. Genitals Genital tattoos, while they are less common, are widely regarded as the most painful due to the high number of nerve endings in the area, which can send pain signals throughout the entire body. The skin in this region is also very thin, which further amplifies the pain sensation. Beyond the physical pain, a genital tattoo can also be quite uncomfortable due to the private nature of the body part involved. Professionalism and comfort with the tattoo artist are also crucial when getting a genital tattoo. Armpit Armpit tattoos are notoriously painful due to the thinner skin and high number of nerves in the area, making it extremely sensitive to the tattoo needle's puncture. Additionally, the armpit's close proximity to lymph nodes can result in further discomfort throughout the tattooing process. It can also be a difficult area to heal a tattoo due to the constant movement. Overall, an armpit tattoo requires a lot of thought and consideration, and it definitely shouldn’t be one of your first. Rib cage The rib cage is infamously painful to have tattooed, largely due to the thin layer of skin in the area. When the tattoo needle hits the ribs, it causes a sharp pain, as there is little flesh to cushion the impact. On top of this, the rib area expands and contracts with each breath, which can further heighten the pain during the tattooing session. This sensitivity, combined with the vibrations caused by the needle hitting the bones, makes the rib cage one of the more painful tattoo locations. Elbows and knees Elbow and knee tattoos are well-known for their high pain levels due to the minimal amount of muscle and fat in these areas. This results in the tattoo needle working closely over bone, which intensifies the pain. The skin around the elbows and knees is also tougher and less elastic, making the tattooing process more painful. The frequent movement of these joints can also prolong the healing process and increase discomfort during recovery. Hands and feet The hands and feet are considered among the more painful spots to get inked, especially on the palms and bottom of the feet. This is largely because these areas have a high number of nerve endings and thinner layers of skin over the bone. Furthermore, the skin in these areas is subject to constant movement and exposure, which can complicate the healing process. Those opting for tattoos on their hands or feet should prepare for challenging tattoo experience and a diligent aftercare routine.

TOP TIPS FOR DEALING WITH TATTOO PAIN

Eat before and during your tattoo It is crucial to ensure you have eaten and are wellhydrated before getting a tattoo; having an empty stomach can cause lightheadedness or dizziness due to lower energy and blood sugar levels. It is also important to keep your blood sugar levels up during the tattoo, so bring along a fizzy drink, sweets, chocolate, or anything else you like that has plenty of sugar.

Get aINSERT good night’s sleep HEADER COPY Before getting a tattoo, it is important to get a good night’s rest, especially if you are booked in for a longer session. A well-rested body can cope better with stress and pain, therefore making the tattooing process slightly easier. Consider using a numbing cream Numbing creams or sprays can be a great way of taking the edge off during the tattoo process, especially for those with low pain tolerance or when targeting sensitive areas. Numbing creams work by temporarily blocking the nerve signals in the skin. This reduction in sensation allows people to undergo longer tattoo sessions with more comfort, making it easier to tackle large designs or tattoos located in painful areas. However, it's important to consult with the tattoo artist first before using any numbing products, as some can affect the skin's texture or ink absorption. Mentor Dedaj, a spokesperson for LLTattoo has commented: “It is important to realize that any tattoo hurts, and to not go to your appointment with false expectations. With that being said, there are definitely some areas that hurt more than others. It is generally areas with less fat and thinner skin that hurt the most, such as the rib cage and the knees, as there is less cushion for the needle. Areas with a high concentration of nerve endings, such as the armpit, are also notorious for being quite painful. “If you’re getting your first tattoo, some of the less painful areas are your outer forearm and upper arm, as they are fleshy areas that are low on nerve endings. However, after a few tattoos, you might start thinking about getting one in a more painful area. While they are never pleasant, they are bearable as long as you visit a reputable tattoo artist and prepare yourself beforehand.”

Mastering the LIFESTYLE

JANUARY SALES January is here, and with it comes the annual flurry of sales. From fashion and beauty to homewares and tech, the discounts are tempting — but navigating them wisely takes more than just showing up. Here’s how to make the most of the January sales, without breaking the bank.

Plan Before You Shop

Successful sale shopping starts with a strategy. Take stock of what you actually need - a wardrobe refresh, new winter boots, or that gadget you’ve had your eye on. Make a list and prioritize. Pro Tip: Categorize items into “must-have,” “nice-to-have,” and “splurge if discounted.” This prevents impulse buys and ensures your wallet stays happy.

Research, Compare, Repeat

Not all deals are created equal. Check multiple retailers to see who offers the best price. Sign up for newsletters or alerts - many stores send exclusive early-bird discounts to subscribers. Pro Tip: Use apps and browser extensions to track price history. That 50% off tag might actually be a regular price - knowledge is power.

Shop Early… Or Late

The first week of January often brings the deepest discounts on popular items, while the end of the month can see “clearance blowouts.” Decide if you want to grab trending pieces quickly or hunt for end-ofseason steals.

Pro Tip: High-demand sizes or colours sell fast. For classics, waiting a little longer can save even more.

Don’t Forget Online

The best deals aren’t always in-store. Online shopping opens access to extra discounts, free shipping offers, and exclusive bundles. Plus, it saves time, energy, and the dreaded post-holiday crowds. Pro Tip: Bookmark your favorite retailers’ sale pages and check them daily - some discounts are flash-only.

Invest in Timeless Pieces

January sales are perfect for investing in staples that last beyond the season. Think cashmere sweaters, tailored coats, quality boots, and versatile handbags. These are items that will elevate your wardrobe and withstand trends. Pro Tip: Mix investment pieces with on-trend bargains for a chic, balanced look.

Set a Budget (And Stick to It)

It’s easy to get carried away when everything is discounted. Set a budget before you shop and track your spending. Focus on value - a well-chosen item at 40%

off beats ten impulsive buys at 70% off. Pro Tip: Use a simple spreadsheet or budgeting app to monitor your purchases in real-time.

Check Return Policies

Finally, even the best deals aren’t worth it if you can’t return what doesn’t work. Check each retailer’s policy before buying especially for clearance or final-sale items. Pro Tip: Keep receipts, and don’t forget to note deadlines for exchanges or returns.

The Bottom Line

January sales can be thrilling - and walletfriendly - if approached with strategy and patience. Plan your shopping, know your priorities, and aim for quality over quantity.

By the end of the month, you’ll have snagged pieces you love and mastered the art of smart sale shopping.

New Year’s Resolutions INSERT HEADER COPY

Every January, we crack open fresh planners, swear off sugar, and promise ourselves this will be our year. But the best resolutions aren’t just wishful thinking, they’re small, sustainable shifts that make life brighter. Here are the top ten New Year’s resolutions, plus tips to help you stick with each one long after the confetti settles.

1. Get Healthier (Without Turning Your Life Upside Down)

From boosting your energy to feeling stronger in your clothes, health is the star of every resolution list. Forget extreme diets-focus on small swaps: a daily walk, more whole foods, and consistent sleep. Try this: Commit to 15 minutes of movement a day. It’s tiny, doable, and builds confidence fast.

2. Save More Money (And Actually Understand Your Budget)

Financial wellness is trending, and this year it’s all about clarity. Track what you really spend, then set micro-goals-like saving the cost of one takeout meal per week. Try this: A dedicated “Future Me” savings account. Name it something motivating.

a new language, instrument, or craft, learning is back in style. Try this: Dedicate the same 20 minutes you’d spend scrolling social media to your chosen skill.

7. Get Organized (Digitally and Physically)

Clutter, physical or digital, creates mental fog. This year, people want clearer spaces and calmer minds. Try this: Adopt the “one-drawer rule”: organize one small space each week.

8. Travel More (Experiences Over Things)

Whether it’s a big international adventure or exploring your hometown, travel is topping resolution lists as people prioritize memories over material goods. Try this: Start a travel wish list and set a tiny monthly savings amount toward a future trip.

9. Strengthen Relationships

In an increasingly busy world, nurturing friendships and family connections is a top emotional priority. Try this: Put one standing check-in on your calendar-a weekly text or monthly coffee date.

3. Improve Mental Well-Being

10. Reduce Stress and Live More Intentionally

4. Exercise More (But With Joy, Not Obligation)

Final Word

Mindfulness, therapy, less stress, everyone wants a calmer mind. The shift now is toward daily emotional hygiene, not occasional burnout recovery. Try this: A five-minute morning check-in. “How do I feel? What’s one thing I need today?”

Gone are the days of punishing workouts. The new mindset? Movement that sparks joy, dance classes, hiking, or even stretching before bed. Try this: Pick an activity you loved as a kid. Rediscover play.

5. Eat Better (Hello, Vibrant Plates!) People are ditching restrictive rules and embracing colorful, whole-food meals that nourish rather than punish. Try this: Add one extra serving of fruits or veggies per day, add before you subtract.

6. Learn Something New

Call it the “curiosity revolution.” Whether it’s

Intentional living is the new luxury. People crave slower mornings, meaningful routines, and boundaries that protect peace. Try this: Build a “closing ritual” at the end of each day write down tomorrow’s top tasks, then unplug. Resolutions don’t require perfection, they thrive on consistency and compassion. Plant small seeds now, water them daily, and by next New Year’s Eve you’ll be celebrating much more than the calendar flipping.

Your choice of Sixth Form should support your ambitions and provide a springboard to the next exciting stage of your life. But how do you know whether one Sixth Form is right for you over another? We’ve pulled together a few things to consider when deciding what to do next. Subjests - does the Sixth Form have the right type and mix of subjects for you? Are you looking for a more academic pathway, such as A Levels or the International Baccalaureate? Or maybe a more vocational pathway such as BTecs? Facilities and teaching - is the Sixth Form equipped with specialist spaces and more importantly teachers who are specialists in their field? Careers - do they offer a dedicated Careers Advisor? Ideally someone with the correct post-grad qualifications and extensive experience helping students with UCAS applications and support for wherever you want to go next. Onward destinations - where do their students typically go after school? Are they going to Russell Group Universities, well regarded Drama schools or Conservatoires? Or are they going to

work for household name companies through apprenticeships? Support Networks - apart from a Careers Specialist, what additional support is offered? How is pastoral care embedded across the Sixth Form? Do they provide opportunities to speak with alumnae? What about practicing for interviews or writing the perfect CV or LinkedIn profile? A Holistic Education - what enrichment opportunities are also available? A good Sixth Form will offer leadership opportunities which are essential for UCAS applications, such as leading societies, developing entrepreneurial and business skills, continuing with sports and the creative arts outside of the classroom, and getting involved in the local community through the Duke of Edinburgh programme, volunteering or other work experience. A strong attraction is brewing between yourself and someone who is operating on your frequency. Rather than focus on what’s not working in your life, try focusing your energies into areas that are benefiting you and bringing you an element of joy and fulfilment. Normally you are not one for compromising your ideas or beliefs, but someone may try to force your hand. Someone who owes you money or a favour may ask you for extra time.

You now know who your real friends are. Have no regrets about the past because you have had to live through all your experiences to arrive at the point you have arrived at today. Be proud of yourself of all the hard work you are putting into making your world a safer and happier place to be. An interesting time romantically is developing between you and someone you are flirting with. A productive period at work or in the business world offers positive results.

If you are awaiting a sum of money for something you are entitled to, you will not be disappointed as you are treading a fortuitous pathway that is literally paved with gold. Someone is working behind the scenes on your behalf because they genuinely want to help. If you are still not feeling too well and generally run down because your energy levels are sorely depleted, a change of diet, a new exercise routine and alterations to your timetable will help you feel well again.

Take charge of a situation that is rapidly spiralling out of control. Make it absolutely clear to a certain person that they have nothing to gain by trying to get you back. You are a free spirit that is perfectly capable of making his or her own decisions without any assistance from anyone else. Do not be tempted into buying into anything that could cause you to lose money. Do by your instincts every step of the way to secure a successful outcome in both your domestic and professional circumstances.

Fate moves in mysterious ways. An association with someone you become acquainted with by simple communication will turn out better than you expected and a new friendship or romance could subsequently develop. If you are seriously thinking of moving to a new house or relocating because you want a fresh start, now is the perfect time to put plans into action.

After numerous setbacks and frustrations, especially in your personal life involving lovers and certain friendships, you are well advised to reconsider certain plans. Even though you are cramming lots into your day, fortunately, you are starting to create a good life balance. An opportunity to make some extra cash or commence a new business idea that is both enjoyable successful.

You may witness an emotional outburst from someone probably born out of jealousy and resentment. Your ability to persuade others by your excellent vocabulary could defuse a potentially explosive situation. A job interview or other kind of meeting could be just what is needed for your future progress and personal development.

You should not have to even try to force yourself to do anything that feels wrong just to please someone else. These days you know exactly who to trust and which people to avoid. Long distance journeys are possible soon but once again, you may feel reluctant to disclose your destination to all and sundry. An increase in your finances will give you more spending power than in recent years, but keep this information private, at all costs.

Encouraging news regarding your finances will give you that added boost of confidence and put you in a great mood for splashing out and spending on life’s luxuries. By now, you have grown tired of hearing all about the everyday doom and gloom on the news and have decided that you are going to live in the fast lane from now on. If you are interested in starting a new sideline business, the outlook is favourable.

Silence is golden and speech is silver, so if in doubt, say nothing at all. You can look forward to meeting new groups of people who are on your spiritual wavelength which will help you to develop your interests in a very positive way. Don’t feel guilty about enjoying yourself because this is your life and its important that you live it.

You are a force to be reckoned with when your feathers are ruffled but be careful that you that you are not too hasty and risk losing a good friend because of your emotions running high. In depth discussions that are soon to take place could change the direction a personal or professional relationship. Although meeting new people can be an awkward experience for certain people, to your advantage, you possess the knack of knowing how to communicate with just about anyone.

The Cold Season Escape...

Why the winter city break is the most stylish way to travel right now. From frost-rimmed skylines to cafés that glow like lanterns, these are the cities redefining the cold-season getaway.

WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS, THE MAGIC RISES Winter reveals cities at their most atmospheric. Streetlights become stage lights, snowfall turns familiar landmarks into film sets, and even the simplest rituals — a hot drink, a gallery wander, a brisk walk across a bridge — feel elevated. There’s a sense of slipping backstage into a place’s real rhythm, long after the summer crowds have taken their final bows. And then there are the perks: boutique hotel rates that finally feel reasonable, famously packed museums suddenly spacious, and the delicious pleasure of ducking into a bar simply because the warm glow looked inviting.

COPENHAGEN: WARMTH, THE SCANDI WAY

Copenhagen in winter is a masterclass in atmosphere. Picture this: soft lights strung across cobbled streets, cyclists wrapped in scarves, and cafés so stylishly cosy they practically beg you to stay for another cinnamon bun. Even the amusement park, Tivoli Gardens, transforms into a twinkling snow globe. Winter here isn’t survived — it’s curated.

VIENNA: COLD WEATHER, HIGH GLAMOUR Few places do winter decadence quite like Vienna. The city feels tailor-made for the season: grand opera houses, ornate

coffee salons serving hot chocolate as thick as pudding, and stately boulevards that shine beneath misty skies. After the Christmas markets fade, Vienna settles into a quiet, elegant confidence that’s irresistible.

NEW YORK: THE CITY THAT NEVER SLOWS (BUT DOES GET COSIER) New York in winter has a cinematic quality. Think snow-dusted brownstones, steam rising from manholes, and diners glowing like beacons at 3pm when the sun has already started to fade. It’s also one of the best-value times to visit — restaurant weeks kick in, sales are everywhere, and

even the most in-demand Broadway shows become easier to snag.

TALLINN: WHERE WINTER LOOKS FAIRY-TALE PERFECT

Medieval rooftops frosted with snow. Narrow lanes lit by lanterns. Cafés hidden in centuries-old stone buildings. Tallinn in winter feels like stepping inside a storybook. It’s compact, charming, and deeply atmospheric — a city made for slow wandering, hearty dinners, and long conversations that stretch late into the night.

MONTRÉAL: A MASTERCLASS IN WINTER CULTURE

Montréal doesn’t endure winter — it celebrates it. From ice festivals and outdoor art to its sprawling underground city (a heated, kilometre-long maze of shopping and cafes), the colder months transform Montréal into a vibrant, culture-soaked playground. Add in French-inspired comfort food — poutine, anyone? — and you’ll forget you ever wished for summer.

HOW TO DO A WINTER CITY BREAK LIKE A PRO

Layer like a local: Merino base layers keep you warm without bulking your suitcase. Book a hotel with a lobby you actually want to spend time in: Winter trips involve more lounging and lingering - embrace it. Plan indoor-outdoor

97 97

balance: Pair frosty morning walks with afternoon museum-hopping. Seek seasonal surprises: Winter light shows, pop-up skating rinks, jazz nights, and comfort-food specials all come alive this time of year. Embrace slow travel: This is the season for lingering over breakfast, wandering aimlessly, and choosing warmth over rush.

THE FINAL WORD

A winter city break isn’t just a holiday - it’s a sensory experience. It’s the glow of a streetlamp on a frosty evening, the hush of a museum where you suddenly have the masterpiece almost to yourself, the luxury of stepping into a café simply because it felt irresistible.

Dobbies Garden Centres Winter Gardening Planters

As temperatures begin to drop and the darker nights draw in, it’s time to start thinking about how best to look after your garden through the colder months. Dobbies Garden Centres is helping gardeners across the UK prepare for the season ahead, sharing advice on how to protect plants from frost, embrace sustainable practices, and get ready for a thriving 2026. Dobbies’ Plant Buyer, Nigel Lawton, says there are plenty of ways to make the most of winter in your outdoor space. Read on for Nigel’s top tips on winter gardening, from protecting delicate plants to adding instant colour and supporting wildlife.

Tidy up

Nigel says one of the most important jobs you can do in your garden during winter is keeping things tidy. Regularly raking dead leaves from your lawn will prevent diseases from spreading and help you bulk out your compost at this time of year. Keeping your lawn free from debris also allows access to air and sunlight. “If the weather allows, you can still mow your lawn, but avoid walking on it when it’s frosty, as this can damage the blades of grass and leave yellow footprint marks”, comments Nigel. Nigel also notes that winter is the perfect time to clean up your greenhouse and get it ready for spring planting. “Wash greenhouse glass and benches with disinfectant to kill any overwintering pests and diseases,” he advises. “You can also use this time to start internal projects like seed sowing on windowsills or in heated greenhouses and conservatories.” For those with vegetable gardens, Nigel suggests using dry, frosty conditions for winter digging. “Turning over vegetable plots can help break down heavy soils making them easier to work in spring. It also exposes over-wintering pests to wildlife and the elements,” he says.

Protect plants

According to Nigel, protecting your plants from frost and winter storms should be a top priority this season. “As we head into winter, focus on securing larger plants, shrubs and climbers,” he says. “Check tree stakes and straps to make sure they’re still in place and providing proper support, especially after strong winds.” When colder weather sets in, Nigel advises using frost protection fleece to shield young and delicate plants from snow and ice. “Evergreens can be susceptible to wind damage, so make

sure they’re well supported and protected,” he adds. “Move pots close to the house to benefit from the warmth of the wall and raise containers off the ground to prevent frost damage and improve drainage.” For more exotic or tropical varieties, Nigel recommends taking extra care. “Cordylines will benefit from a layer of frost protection fleece while more tender plants such as citrus and cannas should be brought indoors into conservatories until the risk of frost has passed.” He also notes that mulching flower beds with peat-free compost or bark helps protect roots from frost and keeps weeds at bay throughout the winter. To avoid container plants getting waterlogged during heavy rainfall, Nigel says you should raise these up on pot feet now to promote drainage. Prune plants Winter is an important time for pruning, and Nigel says it’s crucial to know what should and shouldn’t be cut back. He says: “Now is a great time to prune selected fruit trees as this encourages healthy growth and increases fruit production, however avoid pruning stone fruits such as plum trees when they are not in leaf as they’re more prone to disease at this time of year.” Nigel also recommends pruning ornamental trees while they’re dormant to maintain shape and make any major structural changes. “For shrubby plants such as roses and buddleia, prune by half in winter to protect them from wind-rock and then give them a final prune in spring to encourage strong new growth next summer,” he adds. However, Nigel cautions against pruning early flowering varieties such as forsythia, lilac and flowering currants, which all bloom on the previous year’s growth.

Instant winter colour

Refreshing your containers and hanging baskets is an easy way to bring instant colour and texture to your garden through winter. Nigel suggests hardy varieties that will thrive in colder temperatures. “Pansies and violas

are great choices for cheerful colour, and winter shrubs like sarcococca, also known as Christmas box, add wonderful scent and structure,” he says. “Plants such as skimmia, hellebores and dwarf conifers will create a striking display, while leucothoe and nandina help frame doorways beautifully,” Nigel adds. “At Dobbies, we’ll also have pot-grown springflowering bulbs such as narcissus, hyacinths and snowdrops in stores by Christmas, so if you missed autumn planting, it’s not too late to plant bulbs in December or January for a spring show.”

Sustainability and water storage

When it comes to sustainable gardening, Nigel says winter is an ideal time to focus on water conservation. “Continue harvesting rainwater through the colder months using water butts connected to sheds, greenhouses or garages,” he explains. “This will provide an eco-friendly water source for the warm seasons ahead, and rainwater is better for your plants because it’s naturally soft and nutrient-rich.” He also highlights the benefits of winter irrigation systems and eco-friendly gardening products that help reduce waste and make garden care more efficient.

Final tips

For those new to gardening, Nigel says there are plenty of rewarding ways to enjoy your outdoor space in winter. “Feed wildlife regularly and make sure birds have access to food and fresh water,” he suggests. “It’s also a lovely time to harvest foliage and evergreens for Christmas wreaths and festive decorations - a simple way to bring a touch of your garden indoors.” To give your garden a festive boost, Nigel recommends seasonal favourites such as helleborus niger (Christmas rose), sarcococca for fragrance, and hamamelis japonica for winter interest. “These plants will keep your garden looking beautiful right through the colder months and into early spring,” he says.

READING NOOK From the best spots in your home to the best textures to decorate with, here are some helpful tips and tricks to decorate a cosy reading nook. Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture and Choice comments: Creating a reading nook in your home is a gentle reminder for us to slow down and appreciate our surroundings. It’s a space dedicated to relaxation and often features our own personal touches. It doesn’t matter what interior style you love – comfort is key. From the best spots in your home to the best textures to decorate with, here are some helpful reading nook ideas.

Find a good spot in your home

Choose a quiet, cosy and comforting corner in your home for your reading nook. Think of a space where you can read in peace without being disturbed by other people. An underused corner in your living room or an alcove may serve as inspiration for you to decorate it. Here are some other suggested spaces: By a window overlooking a nice view with a lot of natural light, a cosy reading nook under the stairs to save space. A spare room with extra space so that you can install bookshelves.

Set the mood with lighting

If you’re reading for long periods of time, good lighting is essential. If your reading nook is near a window, you’ll receive plenty of natural light throughout the day but you will still need to prepare for the evenings. However, if you don’t get much natural light, you should invest in task lighting nearby, like a nearby table or floor lamp. Besides task lighting, introducing ambient lighting helps set the mood and makes your space feel more cosy.

Prioritise cosiness with the ambience

From the type of armchair you choose to how you decorate your walls and floors, cosiness must be a priority. When it comes to the armchair, comfort and support are key. A good armchair should be soft and supportive, have ample cushioning for the back and armrest areas. Have deep seats that let you curl up, with soft upholstery like velvet, plush fabric or boucle Choosing the right side table next to your armchair will make your space feel more cosy and functional. In terms of size, pick one where you can place your book easily, a cup of tea or any decorative items like a vase. Once you’ve chosen

Loren Armchair £249.99

the armchair and side table, complement it with lots of cosy textures and accessories. Whether it’s a cushion or throw for your armchair or a soft rug where you can stretch out your feet, these cosy accents ground you and create a tranquil environment.

Choose your colour palette

Set the scene with a soothing colour palette for your reading nook. Light and gentle colours are the natural first option here, but it’s important to consider small pops of colour that can brighten up your space and anchor the room. The simple, light hues create a soothing and welcoming space ideal for kicking back and relaxing, while introducing colourful accents adds character and charm to the space. This can be with a colourful bouquet or bold artwork for a stylish focal point.

Enhance your reading nook with storage

Having a bookshelf next to your reading corner with all your favourite novels within reach is another functional tip to enhance your space. If you have an alcove nearby, you can add shelving to make space for your books or to display decorative items. For those who want to keep it simple and stylish, choose a bookcase with clean lines and in a neutral tone. Aside from bookcases, you can also add more builtins, like a storage bench or install floating shelves, depending on the layout of your space.

Create a mindful space with soothing touches

What better way to practise self-care than to curl up and relax in your safe space? Aside from reading, a reading nook also serves as a place of rest. Cultivating a mindful and wellnessinspired space is a great place to practise self-care. It can be used as a space to unplug, to journal or even as a meditation spot. Accessorise by adding soothing touches to your nook with indoor plants or an essential oil diffuser.

Bring the walls to life

Aside from relaxing paint colours, you can create a standalone feature wall with wallpaper. Similar to colour psychology, it’s important to choose a print or pattern that’s soothing. Floral and fauna patterns are a good choice and can also make it feel like an escape as you’re lost in a book. It may help to pick a theme when choosing a pattern, like your favourite flower or animal print of choice. This makes it easy to bring in other accents such as a cute plushie or an indoor plant that matches the theme.

107 107

Decorate your reading corner by adding personal touches to the walls. Think of your wall as an empty canvas with framed motivational quotes from your favourite novel or author, quirky wall decal or bold artwork to brighten up the space. For maximum impact, introduce a gallery wall that allows you to display as many framed pieces depending on the size of your reading nook. Choose a common theme that ties all these photos together, such as nature prints, colour or inspirational quotes.

Introduce personal touches

Since your reading nook serves as your quiet escape, it should also represent who you are as a person. Displaying personal mementoes like photographs, movie posters, or postcards from your travels are some of the ways to inject personality into your reading nook. Another cool way to add personal touches is by bringing in a sound system or record player so that you can listen to your favourite tunes while reading.

Loren Armchair £249.99

Make room for two

If you think reading is more than just a solitary activity, why not decorate your nook so someone else can (quietly) join you? Introduce an indoor bench or a large armchair to your reading nook which allows you to accessorise with soft, comfy textures such as a cashmere throw and lots of cushions. If the reading nook is a space for you to bond with your kids, bring in lots of playful touches like a stuffed animal they can hug, a funky wallpaper print or a whimsical lamp. Think of it as a place where you can make the best memories all in the comfort of your own home.

The ultimate blend of form and function, a beautiful mirror not only looks great but can also highlight other decorative choices.

And finally, Faye’s key piece of advice for anyone investing in a new mirror this new year: go bold. She said: “Let's not forget that the mirror itself can be a beautiful focal point. Be brave and test the boundaries of your design limits, add that extra pop of colour or choose something with some intricate detailing to make it really stand out.

Faye said: “Mirrors are the perfect accessory to elevate the richness of your design choices. Use them to reflect your key pieces, maybe opposite a piece of wall art so you get to enjoy it from multiple aspects.

Making More Room

111

Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion. Assess Feasibility

Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.

Plan Your Space

Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.

Structural Considerations

Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.

Lighting and Ventilation

Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Access

Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.

Utilities

Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.

Finishing Touches

Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.

Budget

Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.

Professional Help

Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.

By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

Small Bathroom

Big Style

115 Mallorca Diamond Patterned Tiles, £49.20 per m2

Whether you’re looking to add character to a bijou bathroom, excitement to an ensuite or remove the drabness from your wet room, independent tile retailer Porcelain Superstore is on hand to help. The tile experts are encouraging homeowners to embrace the bold to bring big personality to small bathrooms. Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “When it comes to styling small bathrooms, there is Chelsea Classic Mix Tiles £98.40 per m2

Dolce Mist Kit Kat Tiles £105 per m2

Jewel Onyx Pink Porcelain Tiles, £72 per m2

a temptation to stick with neutral shades and minimal pattern. And while this might make a space feel more open, when done correctly, using colour and pattern can be just as effective. Patterned tiles are a great choice for bathrooms, as they’re full of life and personality.Sometimes, they can be a bit too much for kitchens and other social spaces - so the bathroom is a great place to get creative, as it’s a more private space.” Here Abbas shares his top tips on how to use tiles to bring colour and pattern to small bathrooms – all tiles are available now from Porcelain Superstore.

Consider Natural Light

First and foremost, consider the natural light available. In small bathrooms that are short of natural light, it’s a good idea to choose glossy, lighter wall tiles that will bounce light around and increase the sense of space. Abbas said: “The impact of natural light shouldn’t be underestimated. It will have a massive effect on the final look of your tiles so don’t rush this step.”

Choose Patterns Carefully

The key is to not overwhelm the room. Less can be more, so instead of tiling your whole room in patterned tiles, why not consider a simple feature wall behind your shower, or contrast plain wall tiles with a

striking decorative floor? And pick patterns carefully. While they’re undoubtedly beautiful, patchwork-style patterned tiles can easily overwhelm a smaller room. Instead, look towards geometric patterns with simple repeating designs. Abbas said: “On-trend diagonal tiles will add a sense of dynamic energy to smaller floors - you could even create your own simple checkerboard design by using plain white and black tiles together.”

coloured tiles or diagonal layouts can draw the eye up or across the space, enhancing the sense of roominess.”

Size Matters

Add Texture

Larger tiles can make a small bathroom feel more expansive as they reduce the number of grout lines, creating a more seamless look. However, there’s always a balance. Abbas said: “Avoid overly large tiles that can look out of place in tiny rooms, as well as leaving awkward slithers of cut tiles at the edges.”

Think About Layout

Running tiles in a brick bond or herringbone pattern can add visual interest and make a room appear larger. And Abbas has another styling trick to make a room feel bigger. Abbas said: “In bathrooms that are short on heights, such as attic conversions, you can also experiment with patterns. Strips of different

Vertical tiles can make a ceiling feel higher, while horizontal tiles can make the room feel wider. A huge trend right now is for extra-long wall tiles - at over double the length of traditional wall tiles, they will really help make narrow galley bathrooms feel wider. Textured tiles can add depth and interest to a small bathroom, if they are used strategically. Abbas said: “Lay them on a feature wall, such as behind the shower, or as a smaller backsplash, to create a focal point that catches the eye but doesn’t overwhelm.

Choose Your Colour

Light, neutral tones such as whites and creams will always work well in smaller spaces as they reflect light and create an airy feel. However, cooler colours like blues and greens can also be refreshing and open up the space. Abbas said: “There is a current trend towards darker hues of greens and blues - these can work particularly well in smaller rooms, if you’re looking to create a moody, bijou feel.”

LAYERING As the golden leaves begin to fall and cooler evenings draw in, there’s nothing quite like stepping into a home that feels like a warm embrace. For AW25, ILIV is celebrating the season of comfort with expert tips and stunning fabric collections that make layering effortless, inviting, and oh-so-stylish. “Autumn Winter is all about creating layers you can feel, not just see,” says Debbie Leigh, Design Manager at ILIV. “It’s those tactile details like plush cushions, velvety throws and soft curtains, that transform a room into a space where you want to slow down and savour the season. The beauty of layering is that it’s completely personal; it’s about mixing textures and tones that make you feel at home. Whether that’s a chunky knit casually draped across a bed or a mix of velvet and wool cushions on the sofa, these little touches make a big difference. Layering isn’t just practical for warmth, it adds depth, character and a sense of comfort that feels right at this time of year.”

Why Layering Matters

Elaris Ochre 08 £28.43

Layering is more than a design trend, it’s a practical way to bring warmth and personality into every corner of your home. By combining textures, tones Cotswold Claret Cushions £28

and fabrics, you can create a setting that feels both livedin and luxurious, making it perfect for cosy nights and sun-dappled evenings. Debbie adds, "One of my favourite tricks is mixing different textures, as it immediately makes a room feel cosy and full of character. I love throwing a chunky-knit blanket over a smooth velvet sofa, or layering a soft wool rug underneath to create a little inviting corner. On the bed, pairing a soft cotton bedspread with a wool or boucle throw gives that perfect autumnal warmth.

Jardin Collection, Colourway Forest £28

Curtains are great for adding texture too, for example, heavy full-length curtains with a lighter voile layered behind will catch the light beautifully and make the room feel finished. Even small details like adding a fabric valance to a bed or window can bring

another layer of softness and give the space a tailored, timeless feel." "Cushions, table runners and even upholstered chairs are all chances to play with fabrics and have fun creating your ideal, cosy space. This season, don’t be afraid to mix in richer colour tones too. Ochres, deep greens and berry reds can help to make a space feel instantly snug and welcoming," continues Debbie.

ILIV’S AUTUMN WINTER LAYERING TIPS Start with your base You don’t need to redo your whole room to make it feel cosy. Swap a few summer cushions for heavier, textured ones or drape a soft throw over your favourite chair. Fabrics like wool blends, velvet and boucle instantly make your space feel snug and welcoming, giving it a comforting, seasonal lift.

Mix and match textures

Layering isn’t just about the look, it’s about how fabrics feel together. Pair soft velvet and knitted wool cushions on a sofa, or layer a chunky boucle blanket on a sleek leather armchair. Combining different textures, colours and patterns will help to add personality to your home, making it feel lived-in and inviting.

Debbie concludes, "Layering isn’t about clutter, it’s about making your home feel cosy, welcoming and full of life. Nottinghamshire County and Nottingham City councils are launching a campaign to recruit more Shared Lives carers so that more people with additional needs who find it harder to live on their own, can live as safely and independently as possible in their community Shared Lives is a scheme in which carers share their homes with adults who have support and care needs and provides an alternative to residential care or supported living. Unlike traditional care settings, Shared Lives carers open their own homes to the people they support. Individuals become part of a family, enjoying everyday life, building relationships, and doing what matters most to them. Shared Lives is a unique approach to adult social care which is delivered by trained and approved carers through the Councils’ Shared Lives Schemes. It is similar to fostering, but for adults who need support to live independently. This could be for a few hours a week, shortterm stays, or full-time live-in support, offering flexible, bespoke, personal support to those that need it.

• Adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, or mental health needs • Older people who need extra support to live independently • Young people leaving care who need a stable home environment • Anyone who is socially isolated and would benefit from living with a supportive family or community People sometimes use Shared Lives as a way of learning skills they need to live independently and to help them put down roots in the area before moving into a place of their own. Cllr Barry Answer, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care at Nottinghamshire County Council said: “We’re looking for ordinary people who can make an extraordinary difference. Being a Shared Lives carer is a chance to give something back and make an amazing difference to someone’s life, building relationships between the carer and the person they are caring for. It is flexible, so it can fit around your other commitments. We’re looking for those with a room to spare

and a heart to care. “Our Shared Lives teams provide all the support you need and can answer any questions you may have. If you’re interested in opening your home and caring for someone, I’d encourage you to get in touch to find out more about becoming a Shared Lives carer. We look forward to welcoming you to the scheme!” Cllr Helen Kalsi, Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health at Nottingham City Council said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to have a real positive impact on the lives of local people with disabilities and additional health needs. Shared Lives carers open up their own homes to support people with these needs to help them maintain independence and enrich the quality of their lives. “We’re calling for people who have a spare bedroom and a big heart to come forward and apply to become a Shared Lives carer with us, whether it’s to care for someone full-time, or to provide temporary respite care to give other carers a break. Roles within the scheme are flexible and can suit whatever your circumstances may be – so please get in touch to find out more and start your journey!” Our carers come from all walks of life and support adults of all ages and backgrounds. Care is taken to match each person with the right carer, ensuring a supportive and meaningful connection. No special experience is needed to be a Shared Lives carer as regular training is provided. Breaks are available and carers become part of an active support network. Shared Lives carers work on a self-employed basis, and a fee is paid based on a structure that reflects the value and quality of the service. Caring can be flexible and fit around work and family commitments, as there are different caring arrangements to suit.

Find out more about Shared Lives visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ care/adult-social-care/somewhere-to-live/shared-lives

Ross, one of our current Shared Lives carers said: “You’ve got a good support network around you, and you’ve got the ability to commit to certain hours that work. You can balance life and work in equal measure. You can work a full-time job and still be a shared lives carer.” Tony, another Shared Lives carer added: “The team at Shared Lives are always on hand to offer advice, support and training needed to offer such a unique and rewarding service. If you have the time and space to offer, I would totally recommend contacting the Shared Lives team to start the journey, as I did with two of my friends on the refer a friend scheme and they too are now fully trained Shared Lives carers and looking forward to Sharing their lives” Another Shared Lives carer said: “Our Shared Lives teams provide all the support you need and can answer any questions you may have. If you’re interested in opening your home and caring for someone, I’d encourage you to get in touch to find out more about becoming a Shared Lives carer. We look forward to welcoming you to the team!” Between November and January, selected buses across the city and county network will carry adverts encouraging people to open their hearts and their homes to someone who needs support and consider becoming a Shared Lives carer.

Everyday Forgetfulness vs Dementia INSERT HEADER COPY

125

Learn the signs of dementia and how to get help We all forget things sometimes. Whether it’s misplaced keys, forgotten appointments, or a name that won’t come to mind. While this can be frustrating, for most of us it is part of the natural process of ageing. Dementia is different. It is not a normal part of getting older. But when does forgetfulness become a warning sign of something more serious, like dementia? Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer, with around one million people in the UK living with the condition - but a third do not have a diagnosis. One in three people born today will develop dementia in their lifetime but many are undiagnosed and do not receive the support they need and deserve. Understanding the difference between everyday forgetfulness and dementia can lead to earlier and more accurate diagnosis, meaning more access to better care, advice and support. Alzheimer’s Society are highlighting the signs and symptoms of dementia to be aware of. The charity is encouraging people to seek help if they spot these signs in themselves or a loved one.

What is Forgetfulness?

Forgetfulness is a common part of aging and everyday life. It’s usually temporary and linked to factors such as stress, fatigue, or distractions. For example, forgetting where you put your glasses or missing a doctor’s appointment but remembering it later is common, and not usually a cause for concern.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a group of symptoms and is caused by different diseases that damage the brain. It is progressive, which means symptoms may be relatively mild

at first, but they get worse over time. It can affect memory, problems with language and understanding, changes in behaviour and lead to confusion and needing help with daily tasks. Dementia devastates lives and it is not an inevitable part of ageing.

Forgetfulness vs Dementia

While both involve memory lapses, dementia is characterised by a pattern of symptoms that affect daily life and worsen over time. Alzheimer’s Society’s symptom checklist highlights key signs and symptoms to be aware of, including: • Memory loss: forgetting recently learned information, important dates, or events. • Difficulty organising thoughts or staying focused: struggling to follow a familiar recipe or manage monthly bills. • Confusion with time or place: losing track of dates, seasons, or where they are. • Problems with vision: difficulty reading, judging distance, or recognising faces. • Problems using words or communicating: struggling to follow or join a conversation, repeating phrases or questions several times. • Changes in mood and personality: becoming confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful, or anxious.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Early diagnosis is crucial to access treatment and support that can help people manage dementia symptoms and avoid ending up in crisis. However,

hundreds of thousands of people are facing the devastating realities of dementia without access to the vital care and support that a diagnosis can bring.

The Statistics

According to Alzheimer’s Society, around a third of people living with dementia in the UK have not received a formal diagnosis. This gap means many are left struggling in silence, unaware that their symptoms could be linked to dementia and unaware of the support available.

What You Can Do

Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial to manage symptoms, live independently for longer and avoid ending up in a crisis. It’s important to raise awareness that dementia is not just ‘forgetfulness’. It is a serious condition requiring understanding, compassion, and early action. By learning the difference and encouraging diagnosis, we can improve lives and offer hope to millions.

No one can and should face dementia alone, it will take a society. If you’re worried about dementia, call the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Support Line on 0333 150 3456 or by visiting alzheimersociety. org.uk/joinus

NEWARK HOSPICE CHARITY RAISES OVER £13,000 Beaumond House Hospice Care has raised £13,588 over the course of just one week after encouraging supporters to ‘Give the Gift of Hospice Care This Christmas’. As part of the Christmas Challenge, which is organised by The Big Give, any donations made to the hospice between Tuesday 2 December and Tuesday 9 December were doubled. Through the generous donations made, Beaumond House was able to surpass its £12,300 target with the support of five local businesses, which all provided match funding. The funds raised will enable the charity to continue providing specialist palliative and end of life care, supporting patients and their families in Newark and Sherwood - like Sue and her family. Sue, who previously worked as a care assistant at the hospice, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in July 2024. Sue made the decision to receive In-patient care at Beaumond House, where she enjoyed massages, personal care, meditation and music until she passed away surrounded by her family. Her family said: “Sue was caring, loving and always willing to help those closest to her. She never put herself first and, as a family, we are honoured to have had such an amazing woman in our lives. From the minute she arrived at the hospice, everything felt peaceful and welcoming, and this never stopped throughout the time we all spent there. She was more at peace and happy from the minute she arrived until her final breaths were taken.

The funds have been raised as part of the Christmas Challenge, organised by The Big Give “The support of Beaumond House made Sue’s passing so much easier for her and for us, as the care she received was amazing. match funders - Norwood Park Golf Club, Abbott & Co, Southwell & District Lions, Field Dog Fairs and The Reed Foundation. The campaign was also supported by Alasdair Morrison & Mundys. We wouldn’t have been able to do this without their generous support.

Andrea Ward, Individual Giving Fundraising Manager at Beaumond House Hospice Care, said: “Our supporters never fail to amaze us with their generosity and we are so grateful for their donations during the Christmas Challenge, which have allowed us to exceed our target and raise over £13,000. We would also like to say a special thanks to our generous

“Fundraisers like this are so vital to the hospice, as the care we provide isn’t fully funded by the NHS. It costs us £2.8 million a year to run our service and £2.2 million of this has to be raised through donations, our shops and support from local businesses. It’s because of this that we’re able to continue making a real difference to our patients when every moment matters.”

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost. The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground. A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush. Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities. The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending. The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment. Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”

Hollygate Memorial woodlands A.M. Buckingham Independent Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services. Since then, we have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance our service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas. We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest. We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements. We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and

spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals. There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands. There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family

plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites. Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.

Coping with Bereavement INSERT HEADER COPY

131

Coping with bereavement while planning a funeral can feel overwhelming, especially when emotions are raw and decisions need to be made quickly During this time, compassionate support and clear guidance from a funeral director can make the process far more manageable. Understanding what to expect, and knowing how to communicate your wishes, can help ensure the funeral reflects the personality, beliefs and values of the person who has died. One of the most important steps in coping with bereavement is allowing yourself time and space to process the initial shock. Many people feel pressure to “stay strong,” yet grief expresses itself differently for everyone—through sadness, numbness, confusion or even moments of calm. A good funeral director will recognise this and work at your pace, offering reassurance rather than rushing decisions. When you first meet, they should create an environment where you feel comfortable discussing your loved one, asking questions, or expressing uncertainty. When arranging a funeral, it helps to start by clarifying what feels most important to you and your family. This might include cultural or religious traditions, specific music, readings, or the general tone you want the ceremony to convey. Sharing memories of the person who has died can help the funeral director suggest options that feel genuinely personal— whether that means

a simple service, a highly traditional ceremony, or something more modern and celebratory. Transparency is another essential quality to look for. A sensitive funeral director will explain costs clearly, outline the choices available, and never pressure you into unnecessary services. They should also guide you through practical steps such as registering the death, obtaining certificates, and coordinating with celebrants, crematoria or burial sites. Knowing these tasks are supported can greatly reduce stress during a time of grief. It can also be comforting to involve family and friends in the planning. Sharing responsibilities—such as choosing flowers, preparing a eulogy, or creating an order of service— can provide moments of connection and collective remembering. A good funeral director will welcome this involvement and help you incorporate personal touches that honour the individual’s life. During the days following the service, it is normal to experience fluctuating emotions. Continuing to speak with supportive people, whether family, friends or bereavement counsellors, can help you begin to

navigate life after loss. Many funeral directors offer aftercare resources, acknowledging that grief does not end when the ceremony is over.

Ultimately, arranging a funeral is both a practical task and a deeply emotional act of love. With a compassionate funeral director and space to grieve in your own way, it is possible to create a service that brings comfort, dignity and a meaningful tribute to the person you are remembering.
