IF YOU EVER THOUGHT CLUBBING WAS JUST FOR THE UNDER-25S STUMBLING HOME AT 3AM, THINK AGAIN. DAY FEVER, THE UNSTOPPABLE DAYTIME DISCO DREAMT UP BY ACTOR VICKY MCCLURE, HER HUSBAND JONNY OWEN, AND PALS INCLUDING JON MCCLURE OF REVEREND & THE MAKERS, IS FLIPPING THE NIGHTLIFE SCRIPT, ONE SUNLIT DANCEFLOOR AT A TIME.
Born from a WhatsApp chat and now heading to 24 towns and cities in September, Day Fever brings affordable, joy-filled clubbing into the daylight hours. “The first one sold out in two seconds,” Vicky beams. “We did Nottingham, then Sheffield, then Merthyr and Cardiff and it just flew from there.”
It all started with a simple idea. “Jonny just said, ‘Have you ever seen those bars in town during the day? They’re rammed!’” laughs Jon. “We were like, come on then, let’s do it and it went nuts.”
Now, this feel-good phenomenon sees people of all ages, literally from their 20s to their 70s, letting loose on packed dancefloors. “We’ve had Jonny’s mum sneak in a bottle of gin and stash it in a bush outside in Cardiff,” Jon jokes. “That’s the vibe! Bit of mischief, loads of laughs, and not a bit of trouble.”
AND IT’S THAT WARMTH, SPONTANEITY, AND INCLUSIVENESS THAT KEEPS PEOPLE COMING BACK.
Vicky’s voice lifts when she talks about the kind of people turning up to dance: “It’s mothers and daughters, friends reconnecting, people on chemo, people grieving. These are your nurses, your cleaners, your teachers. These are the people keeping the world spinning and now they’ve got somewhere to let go and feel joy.”
One story that’s stayed with her is a woman who had barely seen her friends or family unless it was for a wedding or a funeral. “Now she’s got a new frock every month, and she’s out at Day Fever. She goes shopping Friday night, gets her hair done, and makes a proper event of it. That’s magic, isn’t it?”
Inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword here, it’s baked into the experience. “We’ve had people in wheelchairs come up on stage, and the crowd goes wild. It’s electric. We want it to be accessible to everyone,” says Vicky, visibly moved. “It makes your hairs stand on end.”
DAY FE
VER
AND THAT’S THE MAGIC, REALLY.
While you might catch a familiar face on the decks, Jonny, Vicky, or even Jon’s wife Laura, most Day Fever events are led by local DJs. “We’ve been really selective,” Vicky explains. “They know their crowd; they know what their people want to hear. And they’re smashing it.”
And yes, music is taken very seriously. “There’s a loose structure,” Jon explains. “Bit of Northern Soul to kick off, disco, 80s bangers, 90s dance, a singalong, maybe some indie...but we always have Whitney. If Vicky’s there, it’s the law.”
Vicky grins, “Hits across the generations, that’s the key. We’ve done themed nights, even Christmas clubs. And we’ll ask, ‘Do you want more Christmas songs?’ and they’re like ‘nah, just give us the hits!’” She laughs. “You just get a feel for it.”
Regional pride plays a part too.
“Manchester goes mad for Oasis, Nottingham’s got its favourites, and we make sure to tap into that local energy,” says Vicky. “It’s about community, about people being together.”
With so many entertainment options pricing people out, Day Fever deliberately keeps things cheap. Vicky says. “We’ve always wanted it to be affordable. A night out can be £100 easy. We didn’t want this to be that.”
Jon adds, “Jonny said from day one it’s for ordinary people. Families, people with kids. We’re not here to rip people off.”
Venues love it too. “We shut up shop at 8pm,” Vicky explains, “they do a quick turnaround and run their usual night from 10. They’re making great takings and reaching a new crowd. It’s been a game changer for loads of clubs.”
If Day Fever feels like a family party, that’s because... it kind of is.
“Jonny and I are married, Jon’s wife DJs, his brother Chris and childhood friend Jamie are involved. Even Jonny’s daughter Katie’s behind the decks,” Vicky laughs. “It’s one big gang, and when people come through the doors, they’re part of it too.”
It’s not uncommon to see Vicky herself dancing on stage with partygoers, selfies flying and smiles everywhere. “When people realise we’re just there to have fun too, that we’re not up on a pedestal, they really get into it,” she says. “And I mean, come on, when do you get to go clubbing with your mum?!”
With festivals like Splendour and Reverend & The Makers’ 20th anniversary show in Sheffield this summer, things are scaling up—but slowly. “We’ve had offers to take it abroad, but we’re being really careful,” Vicky says. “It’s only 18 months old, it feels like a decade, but we want to make sure we look after what we’ve built.”
They’ve even announced their own Day Fever festival at Nottingham’s Arboretum on the 23rd August. “We’ve got loads of ideas,” she teases. “But for now, we’re just enjoying this moment. It’s simple, and it works.”
Even with their busy schedules, Vicky filming Trigger Point, Jon touring Australia, both say they miss it when they’re away. “Sounds a bit daft,” Jon chuckles, “but Day Fever cheers me up. You leave feeling lighter.”
To Smash Fundraising Milestone This Year
More than 20 local charities have benefited from the festival backed by Arts Council England and It’s in Nottingham since it began 19 years ago. Six new charities are being supported in 2025 ranging from the Notts Hospice to the Uniform Project, which provides pre-loved uniforms for free.
This year’s edition on Sunday 19 October is set to be bigger than ever with more than 45 venues around Hockley and Sneinton playing host to more than 450 performers. Tickets are already available at £15 for access to every venue with all proceeds going to the nominated charities.
The festival’s focus is on developing diverse local talent, creating inclusive spaces and celebrating Nottingham's communities through a vibrant mix of music, visual arts, poetry and participatory activities for all ages. Dubbed a ‘massive game changer’ for the city’s creative community, the festival will offer promoter development opportunities for 15 stages as well as progression routes for local artists.
The stacked festival line up will feature favourite local bands to rising artists from rock, indie, orchestral and jazz to techno, choral and hip-hop, as well as street performers bringing a carnival flavour to the city.
There’s also an opportunity for three new up and coming artists to play the festival via a new competition. Keep an eye on the Hustle socials for details of how to enter soon.
Festival favourites the UFO Orchestra will be returning once again for a very special performance of the 60-piece orchestra taking place at St Mary’s Church for the first time with five handpicked vocalists to be
revealed shortly.
An exciting collaboration between the London based Jazz refresh:ed - set up to offer underrepresented jazz musicians more performance opportunities - and Acoustickle will see young artists from London and Nottingham take to the stage at Peggy’s Skylight.
There will be a Queer Hustle takeover of four venues including an exhibition at Broadway and an exploration of ballroom culture, an underground LGBTQ+ subculture with roots in New York, with vogue dance workshops in the day culminating in a ball. The LGBTQ+ friendly Lord Roberts will feature drag bingo and a drag show, all in the area around Broad Street aiming to be designated Nottingham’s own Rainbow Quarter.
Stepping up the decor game, the festival is working with the company behind huge events including Glastonbury. Jumbo Productions will be running street decor workshops in the run up, with the aim of transforming four of the Hustle venues in a way that will reflect their musical identity with some awe inspiring creations.
Hockley Hustle co-director Tommy Rosley said: “Hockley Hustle has always been about more than just music, it’s a celebration of Nottingham’s creativity, community, and generosity.
“Over the past 19 years, we’ve raised over £237,500 for local charities, and we’re incredibly proud of the impact we've made together. This year, we’re going bigger than ever with 45+
venues, more than 450 artists, orchestras in churches, choirs in cupboards, street food, circus performers, poetry, parades, and carnival vibes taking over Hockley.
“It’s an unforgettable day of connection, culture, and giving back. Whether you're a regular or it's your first time, you’re in for something special. Get your tickets, follow us on socials for updates, and help us make an even bigger difference this year.”
Alex Flint, CEO of It’s in Nottingham, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be the headline sponsor of Hockley Hustle once again. The festival is a true celebration of Nottingham’s creative spirit, bringing thousands of people into the city centre to discover and enjoy live music, art and culture in venues they might never have visited before.
“It’s a fantastic showcase of our independent businesses and the vibrant community that makes Nottingham so special. What’s even more inspiring is the festival’s commitment to giving back -raising significant funds for local charities that do vital work across the city. Supporting events like Hockley Hustle is at the heart of what we do, championing Nottingham and ensuring our city continues to thrive.”
Tickets are £15 per person (plus booking fee) for a wristband giving entry into every single venue and performance. Student concessions and Young Hustlers tickets for under 18s are available (admission to selected venues only).
NOTTINGHAM SCHOOLBOY AIMS TO RUN MILES FOR FRAMEWORK AS ITS NEW YOUTH PATRON
A keen teenage runner has taken on the role of Youth Patron for the charity working to end homelessness across the East Midlands.
Lewis Smith (13), from Netherfield, was inspired after seeing his friend become the first ever Youth Patron for Framework last summer, and helping to raise funds and spread awareness of the charity’s work among young people.
Isa Biçer (15), from Gedling, became the Youth Patron in 2024 after getting involved in supporting Framework when he took part in the Big Sleep Out with his scout group, going on to organise his own Virtual Sleepout, in which Lewis took part. Both attend Carlton Le Willows Academy.
Last year, Lewis, a keen runner, completed the Robin Hood Mini Marathon and the Great North Junior Run, raising more than £480 for Framework, after being inspired by his friend.
Lewis said: “I am very happy and honored to be the new Youth Patron. I wanted to take on this role because I was inspired by Isa. Homelessness is a very important issue so taking this role is just the right thing to do. I want to try and fundraise as much as possible by using my running. I also want to try to think of other fun ways to help encourage others to get involved and help fundraise and help support Framework in any way that they can.”
Reflecting on his year as Youth Patron, Isa said: “I was really proud to be chosen to take on this role and help engage younger people and share my views and feelings about homelessness with those in higher positions. I’m most proud of the sleep out I arranged because it
inspired my friends including Lewis to support Framework and we raised a huge £1100! I’m happy for Lewis because he is passionate about it and am pleased I’ve inspired him.”
Loren Shore, Community Fundraiser, Framework said: “Isa was our very first Youth Patron, and he kicked off the role so incredibly. What he’s achieved over the past 12 months has been nothing short of inspiring – from live TV interviews to creating his own fundraising events and helping raise thousands for Framework. He’s been everything we could’ve hoped for and more.
“But what’s even more special is that Isa’s journey is part of what led us to our new Youth Patron – Lewis. The two are good friends, and it was Isa who first inspired Lewis to start fundraising last year. Since then, Lewis has gone from strength to strength, and it speaks volumes about his incredible character. We’re so proud to have him officially join the Framework fundraising family. I’m so excited to see what the next 12 months hold for Lewis – and I can’t wait to be by his side supporting him all the way.
“At Framework, we believe young people have a powerful voice and a huge role to play in shaping their communities. That’s why having a Youth Patron is so important to us – it gives incredible young fundraisers a platform, celebrates their achievements, and helps inspire others to get involved. These young people show us what hope,
kindness, and community action truly look like.”
From July 2024 to July 2025, the creativity and kindness of young people across Nottinghamshire raised more than £10,500 for Framework – funds that will directly support local people experiencing homelessness through the Building Better Futures appeal.
At this year’s Young Supporters Awards, Framework proudly recognised schools, Scout groups, and a record-breaking number of individual young people for their incredible fundraising achievements.
Among the awardees were Central Notts Scouts, who raised over £3,100 through their Big Sleep Out; Brookside Primary School, who raised £1,275.60 through a school-wide sleep-out and other fundraising initiatives; and Good Shepherd Primary School, who took part in a ‘Big Snore’ sleep-in.
The awards also celebrated individuals like Olivia Price, who raised £1,192.50 by running 30 miles in November and Sam Jones who created a Reverse Advent Calendar raising £426.
They were joined by the brilliant Bicer brothers – Isa, Emre and Rada – who raised £1,100 through their own sleepout, as well as many other inspiring young people who’ve shown what a huge difference children and teenagers can make when they put their hearts into a cause.
Loren added: “This year, we had 23 individual awardees – the highest number of young supporters we’ve ever formally recognised – and thanks to them, and the wider community of schools and youth groups who got involved, together they helped raise an incredible £10,500. We

THE NATIONAL THEATRE’S HIGHLY ANTICIPATED TOUR OF ITS SMASH HIT PRODUCTION, DEAR ENGLAND, COMES HOME TO NOTTINGHAM
The Olivier Award-winning ‘Best New Play’ will visit the Theatre Royal Nottingham from Tuesday 23 until Saturday 27 September in a coproduction with Josh Andrews and Stuart Galbraith of JAS Theatricals.
Written by the multi-award-winning stage and screen writer, James Graham (Sherwood, BBC One; Quiz, ITV) and directed by the Almeida Theatre’s Artistic Director Rupert Goold (Patriots, King Charles III), Dear England, tells the uplifting, at times heartbreaking, and ultimately inspiring story of Gareth Southgate’s revolutionary tenure as England manager in this gripping examination of nation and game.
Aspect recently spoke with Nottinghamshire born James Graham about the production.
There’s a lovely symmetry to the relationship of James Graham and the former England football manager Gareth Southgate. The playwright vividly remembers the night when Southgate as an England player missed a penalty. The moment that England were knocked out of Euro 96.
“I was acting in my first ever play, a production of Of Mice and Men, at my secondary school in Nottingham”, the 42-year-old remembers. “We were all watching the semi-final against Germany at Wembley on the TV as we came off stage. I’d been really into the tournament. It was at home, it was sunny. It was full of drama. And then Gareth missed that penalty. I was in tears going home in the car with my mum. I couldn’t make sense of it.”
That harrowing miss forms the starting point for Graham’s Dear England, his smash-hit play about Southgate’s eight years as manager of the men’s team, which is about to embark on its first national tour. This marks another milestone after its premiere at the National Theatre in 2023, its record-
breaking transfer into the West End and its Olivier Award in 2024 for ‘Best New Play’. Now updated to encompass Southgate’s resignation after England’s defeat in the Euro 2024 final, it’s funny, insightful and heartbreaking in just about equal measure. More or less like watching England on the pitch.
The play uses Southgate’s revolutionary approach to winning – his belief that in order to conquer their fear of the penalty shootout, the players needed to cultivate a different, warmer and more inclusive version of masculinity - to examine the state of England itself, and of men’s role within an ever-changing society where allegiance to the national football team is a badge of pride.
“I love putting institutions and systems on stage, to help us make sense of our public life”, Graham explains. “The England football teams – the men’s and the women’s – have such an impact. Football as a culture is such a big part of our life. I went to watch Nottingham Forest the other day, and walking over the river to the stadium, it felt like walking to a cathedral in a community, with masses of people swarming towards it. I wanted to find a story that would make sense of why it matters to us. And I was an England fan as well – it does something to me. I don’t know why I feel so emotional about it, but I do.”
He first thought of writing a play about Southgate after watching the team play at the World Cup in Russia in 2018, when for the first time since 1996, they won a penalty shootout on its way to the semi-finals. “I think like a lot of people, I noticed that it just felt immediately different”, Graham says. “Southgate’s conduct, the new generation of players, the new values and attitudes they carried with them. This wasn’t the traditional football I remembered, which was more aggressive. These guys had a nobility, a compassion and a decency which I thought was really striking. I was
curious about how anyone can go into an old institution and begin to change its values and culture so quickly.”
As he read more, talking to football writers to check his conclusions, he realised Southgate was indeed trying something new: he had introduced a psychologist Pippa Grange to work with the players; he was cultivating a new ethos inside the camp. “The neatness and beauty of that arc, that the guy who was the emblem of missing a penalty was the guy who 20 years later came back to solve the problem was just incredible”, Graham says.
The FA asked Graham to wait to meet with Southgate, until the conclusion of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. By then, however, the National Theatre had decided to commission the play, and Graham went into the rehearsal rooms with the script unfinished. It was only weeks before opening night that he actually met Southgate. “It was all just research and imagination until the second week of rehearsal, when I went to meet Gareth face to face”, Graham says with a grin. “And that’s when you have to look your company in the eye and say ‘I might discover something that means we have to throw things out’. It was nerve-wracking.”
Some of that sense of working on a knife-edge transmits into the finished product. The director Rupert Goold, designer Es Devlin, movement directors Ellen Kane and Hannes Langolf and the entire creative team are all committed
to creating a massively entertaining production that somehow captures the thrill of football itself, while simultaneously painting a broad-brush picture of Britain, its politics and its characters. The whole thing is full of energy.
Meeting Southgate did, in fact, change Graham’s view of him. “The thing that I saw behind his eyes, is that it is a mischaracterisation of him to think he is soft. He is kind, he’s really decent and he has an impossible amount of empathy, but he also wanted to win. I kept talking about how he changed the culture, but he was clear it was all about winning. It wasn’t just to feel good about ourselves.”
While Graham’s first version of Dear England – the title is taken from Southgate’s famous letter to fans during Covid and ahead of Euro 2020 – finished with Harry Kane missing a penalty against France at the World Cup in 2022, he has now updated it to take account of England’s ultimate loss to Spain in the final of Euro 2024.
Would it have been better for the play if England had won that tournament? “As a fan, it would have been, yes”, Graham says with a smile. “But as a playwright, it’s entirely fine. I think ultimately in any quest narrative, getting close but not quite getting the trophy is always profound and moving. The project is ongoing. I am an advocate for what Gareth tried to do, and I want his legacy to be that it worked. That being kinder and having compassion and decency in football will also ultimately lead to getting the trophy.”
The theme of what it is to be a man in the modern world, which Southgate has continued to discuss since he left the England job, is very much current. Graham explains: “I believe a writer should try to capture the anxieties of the day and to find stories to make sense of them. The questions of gender and particularly masculinity have been
present in our discourse for a while. It’s tough to be a young man at the moment.
Gareth Southgate and this team consciously led an inquiry into the nature of their own masculinity and identity in order to solve a problem. The fact that they asked those questions felt really thrilling. It doesn’t end with despair. It ends with the men learning something about themselves.”
As a playwright, Graham has never shirked either from tackling big questions or from real events. His first major hit in 2012 was This House, a play that asked questions about democracy through the prism of the manoeuvrings in parliament in the mid-1970s as a minority Labour government clung to power. Quiz, premiered in 2017, looked at questions of honesty and the workings of reality TV by exploring the story of a cheating scandal on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?. His television series Sherwood, now in its second season with a third commissioned, has a gripping plot that unfolds amidst the ongoing aftermath of the miners’ strike.
“I like the challenge of big themes. I am not always convinced I nail it, but I like to take a big state of the nation question and put it in a vehicle that can be a piece of popular theatre that can feel like a fun night out, or be on BBC One in primetime”, he says. “But my rule is that what I write shouldn't feel like a living newspaper. It shouldn't feel like journalism on stage. You need to find a way of making a timeless, universal story that can be performed in 50 years’ time. That can only be about character. You have to focus on someone whose struggles and how they approach them says something about the human condition.”
The strength of Dear England – called “the decade’s biggest theatrical triumph” by one paper – is that it
captures its issues in the net of pure entertainment, helping theatregoers understand the power of sport and sports lovers appreciate the appeal of theatre. “I’ve loved hearing people saying that they suddenly understand why people care so much about sport. And seeing traditional sports goers sitting and enjoying a play. The audience is often on its feet at the end, dancing along to ‘Sweet Caroline’. We didn’t imagine that would happen. It taps into some visceral connectivity, which feels great.”
Dear England, the uplifting, thoughtprovoking and inspiring play about Gareth Southgate’s England men’s football team, is visiting Nottingham Theatre Royal on tour. “This is my home theatre,” says playwright James Graham. “I grew up in Nottingham and saw my early theatre, my first pantos at the Theatre Royal. I have really happy memories of watching panto with other young people, just screaming, laughing, dancing, singing and enjoying the experience.
Then when I graduated with a drama degree from Hull in 2003, I got my first job in theatre as stage door keeper at the Theatre Royal. I knew I wanted to write but needed to learn how a theatre was run. I spent a really, really happy year on that stage door. Often the last job every night would be to go around locking the dressing rooms and then turning the lights off. And I would get to walk into the empty theatre and sit there for a bit and then eventually just turn off the lights. The idea that 20 odd years later, I've written a play that goes on that stage, is very satisfying.”

£12,000 FOR HOSPICE CHARITY
A group of five from Nottinghamshire have towed sledges through the Arctic Circle and camped in temperatures as low as -26°C to raise funds for Beaumond House Hospice Care.
Five individuals from Nottinghamshire have raised £12,081 for local charity, Beaumond House Hospice Care, by taking part in an Arctic expedition in Lapland, Finland.
The trip was run by tour operator, Travel and Trek, which has run various fundraising treks for the hospice.
The expedition saw Paul Marshall, Charlie Marshall, Paddy Whur, Jacquie Whur and David Wathen crosscountry ski and wild camp completely off the trails in east Lapland, 200 km inside the Arctic Circle.
Each person endured pulling a sled laden with approximately 30 kg of supplies and equipment for the duration of the challenge, as well as setting up camp each night, gathering firewood and collecting water.
Charlie Marshall said: “The experience, views, guides and food were absolutely incredible, despite the hard work, coldness, lack of washing and no changing of clothes for four days! It was well worth the pain, tears, cold and lack of sleepgreat memories and a once in a lifetime experience!”
Paddy Whur added: “This was a very real survival trek with all-day cross-country skiing, towing our sleds weighing 30 kg. It was all about teamwork and working together to survive the toughest of tests. It was a challenge, but friendships were made for life and we’re delighted to
have raised over £12,000 for Beaumond House.”
David Wathen added: “I can honestly say it was the hardest thing I have ever done and, although looking back it was an amazing experience, at times it felt like purgatory - especially coping with the -26 degrees Celsius at night in the tent. However, as a team, we all managed to stay positive and supported each other throughout the experience.”
Louise Sinclair, Chief Executive at Beaumond House Hospice Care, said: “Words can’t describe how grateful and proud we are of Paul, Charlie, Paddy, Jacquie and David for their fundraising efforts. The expedition sounds like a true test of endurance and determination, and the whole group really went above and beyond to support the charity.
“Fundraising efforts like this are vital to the survival of Beaumond House. It costs us around £2.8 million to deliver our services to people in need each year, but we have to raise around £2.2 million of this through donations, shops and local businesses.
The money that the group has raised will be invaluable to us as we continue to provide supportive palliative care, allowing the people of Newark and Sherwood to live well and die well
The venue will host a special programme of free community and heritage events from Monday 22 to Saturday 27 September, including an Open Day with access behind the scenes, heritage exhibition, talks, and foyer performances.
During the week of the anniversary, the National Theatre’s smash hit production, Dear England, will be visiting the Theatre Royal from Tuesday 23 to Saturday 27 September, as part of its first ever national tour. This forms a particularly fitting part of the venue’s celebrations, as the play’s acclaimed writer, James Graham, grew up locally and saw his early theatre, including first pantomimes, at the Theatre Royal. On finishing University, he also got his first job in theatre as the venue’s stage door keeper.
The Theatre Royal’s Interim Venue Director, Dan Baxter, said: “We are so proud to be celebrating a landmark birthday this year with a programme focussed very much on the Theatre Royal’s rich history. We’ve curated an exciting programme of free events in order to encourage as many people as possible to engage with us, especially those who may be visiting this beautiful space for the very first time.
The Theatre Royal has been part of Nottingham’s living history for 160 years, a beating heart at the centre of the city’s cultural scene. We look forward sharing this much-loved venue with visitors to our special anniversary events, whether that’s giving a glimpse behind the scenes, showing items from our extensive archive, or hearing more of people’s own personal memories, recollections, and stories. Come and join the fun, we can’t wait to see you!”

Food & Drink
Perfect for
There’s nothing quite like enjoying delicious food in the great outdoors! Whether you're planning a relaxing afternoon at the park or a beachside gathering, the right picnic recipes make all the difference.
Scotch Eggs
Ingredients:
• 4 large British Lion eggs
• 6 (1 x 500g pack) good quality sausages
• 60ml/4tbsp milk
• 45ml/3tbsp plain flour
• 100g/4oz fresh white breadcrumbs
• vegetable oil to cook
• 60ml/4tbsp low fat mayonnaise
• 30ml/2tbsp wholegrain mustard
Method:
1. Place 3 eggs in a small pan, cover with boiling water and bring to the boil. Cook for 6 mins. Meanwhile, mix the mayonnaise and mustard together and spoon into a small dish.
2. Drain the eggs, rinse in cold water, tapping the shells all over. When cool enough to handle, peel away the shells. Heat the oil in a fryer or deep large pan to 160C/325F.
3. Meanwhile, use a knife to cut the sausage skins and peel them away. Mix the sausagemeat together and divide into 3. Beat the remaining egg with the milk and place in a shallow dish. Place the flour and breadcrumbs on plates.
4. Flatten the sausagemeat, roll the boiled egg in flour then wrap the sausagemeat around the egg to make a neat egg shape. Roll the egg in the flour; dip in the beaten egg, then roll in the breadcrumbs. Repeat dipping the egg in flour, egg and breadcrumbs.
5. Use a slotted spoon to carefully lower the eggs into the hot fat and cook for 8 mins or until the eggs are golden on the outside (it's important that the oil is not too hot, so that the sausagemeat has a chance to cook through). Remove the eggs from the hot fat and drain on kitchen paper. Leave to cool. Serve warm or cold with salad and the mustard mayo.
Cherry Tomato Quiche
Ingredients:
• 6 medium British Lion eggs
• •1 ready rolled short crust pastry
• 160ml milk
• 50 double cream
• 40g parmesan, grated
• 40g cheddar, grated
• 80g baby spinach, roughly chopped
• 10g fresh oregano, leaves picked and chopped
• 300g cherry tomatoes, halved
• Salt and pepper to taste
Method: You will need a 23 cm diaphragm tin (preferably with a removable base) and baking beans
1. Preheat the oven to 200*C|180*C fan. Lay the pastry across the tin, leaving it on provided baking paper. Press the pastry to the sides of the tin delicately, just so it sticks. Don’t trim off the edges as your pastry will shrink, so it’s better to
do this after blind baking it.
2. Take the baking paper off and prick the pastry with a fork. Put the paper back on the pastry and fill the tin with baking beans. Bake for 15 minutes, then take the tin out of the oven and remove the paper and the beans. Bake for another 5 minutes, until lightly browned.
3. Whilst the pastry is in the oven, make the quiche filling. In a big mixing bowl whisk together the eggs, milk and double cream. Season with salt and pepper and whisk until well combined. Add the parmesan, cheddar, spinach and oregano and mix again.
4. Pour the quiche mixture into the tin and arrange the tomato halves on top, pressing them lightly into the mixture. Bake the quiche for 30 minutes, until starts browning. Take the tin out of the oven and trim off the excess pastry with a serrated knife.

The Martins Arms
Set in the idyllic Vale of Belvoir village of Colston Bassett, it encapsulates all that is best in an English pub.
For The Northerners birthday in March I booked us into The Martins Arms for a meal and night away, it was a much needed break for both of us so when the toddler came home from nursery riddled with hand, foot and mouth we had to reschedule the whole shebang. Fast forward to the middle of May the sun was shining and FINALLY the time had come again. And no one was ill. The pub was taken over by Laurence Henry (of Masterchef – The Professionals fame) at the end of last year.
Upon arrival I felt very fortunate for the misery of hand , foot and mouth. The booking change meant we arrived on a warm, sunny late afternoon as the garden was filling up with families,
dog walkers and couples. The outdoor area is the best I have seen in Nottinghamshire despite it being in the middle of a renovation. A blend of the old and the new and full of bucolic splendour. I had a choice of champagne, cava or cremant and I think I came close to my definition of ‘bliss’ sitting in the sunshine, drinking a very cold, very dry sparkling wine.
As the sun began to fade we made our way to the bar to have one more drink before our table was ready. It was reassuringly busy in the restaurant and bar and after a short wait we went to our table. For the purpose of this review I am only going to cover the dinner element but if you want a great pub with rooms
I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.
I cannot recommend this place more highly. I slept like someone elses baby. As we were reviewing the menu a scotch egg was carried across the pub and The Northerner decided he was having one. And a starter.
The Scotch Egg arrived first with a generous portion of piccalilli. Warm and runny it was a triumph and a great start to the meal with confident seasoning in the pork meat. My smoked salmon portion was massive, dotted with creme fraiche, capers and a lemon gel, with a side of bread and a perfect quenelle of butter. What was a delicious and light start to my meal was favourably contrasted by the depth of flavour in the smoky ham and pea soup. The soup was a middle-weight veloute, not so light as to evaporate from the palate as soon as you ate it but with perfect smooth texture. Both dishes were SO GOOD.
I had the Sea Trout for main course. It was faultless, the fish cooked perfectly and so full of flavour I was mentally reminding myself to order sea trout more often which is doing the chef a complete disservice. Complimented so beautifully with the duo of champagne sauce and hollandaise, the balls of roe burst through any attempts the dish had to become overly rich with salty aplomb.
While struggling to choose from the menu earlier The Northerner had asked what the pie of the day was to be told it had sold out. When our waiter noticed The Northerners face fall he said he’d ask the kitchen if there were any more left and returned a minute later announcing there was one left. The Northerner did a little (sat down) shimmy and his mind was made up. When it arrived I was so pleased; “THAT is how a Pithivier is meant to look” I reassured him after our experience at Skein.
As The Northerner cut into the pie steam rose out of it and his whole dish continued in this vein for the next 15 minutes – it became the running joke of the meal that it was apolocalyptically hot but so tasty neither of us waited for it to cool down. The pie filling was a mixture of a slow cooked steak and mince which had a really different texture. Not unpleasant, but a bit of a surprise. The stereotype of Northerners loving pies is a bit tired but this definitely restored his faith in the East Midlands a little so I owe the kitchen a big thank you for that alone.
When the dessert menu arrived I really tried to order something else, the fact I have sticky toffee pudding whenever it is on the menu is becoming the blight of this blog. That being said as the temperature had dropped and the dining room twinkled in the dark I wanted something warm and comforting so here we are. After The Northerner had asked for 2 DINNER |
spoons they bought us what looked like a double portion and I knew this would be the nail in the coffin, we were going to be rolled out of there. As the sugar hit our blood stream the sticky toffee pudding defeated us at the half way mark.
The Martins Arms and that meal have redefined how GOOD a pub in the countryside can be for me and I feel so lucky it is on our doorstep (well a 12 minute drive). Book a table the next time you feel a bit disillusioned by the general state of this country (from looking at a local facebook group/trying to book a dr’s appointment/catching any form of public transport), you won’t regret it.

BAR GIGI UNVEILS HIDDEN CAVES FOR PRIVATE DINING AND EXCLUSIVE EVENTS
A SECRET wine cellar and cave beneath Nottingham city centre is opening its doors to the public, as Bar Gigi unveils Cantine dell’Angelo, it’s newly restored underground space.
Tucked beneath the historic 15th-century building at Flying Horse Walk, the onceforgotten medieval caves were rediscovered by the Bar Gigi owners seven years ago, and after years of restoration, the space has been transformed into a hideaway, blending Nottingham’s deep-rooted history with the family’s Italian heritage.
Complete with exposed brickwork, curved alcoves and warm, low lighting, Cantine dell’Angelo is now available for private dining, bespoke events and soon-to-launch ticketed experiences including wine tastings, chef-led supper clubs and Italian-inspired food events.
Lovingly named to reflect its roots, ‘Cantine’ means cellar, while ‘Angelo’ honours the father of Bar Gigi owner and director Gabriella Trivigno.
Gabriella said: “These caves have always been part of our story — they hold so much Nottingham history, and we’ve lovingly restored them to celebrate a forgotten part of the city’s heritage, while also giving guests a new way to experience Bar Gigi. We found the old Flying Horse cellars in 2017. After weeks of clearing, we found a passage under the cellar floor. We spent five years removing 700 tonnes of rubble and found 100 meters of medieval caves dating back to approximately 1100 to 1200 AD.
“After lots of hard work, this incredible space can now be enjoyed by the public, with private hire available, as well as exclusive wine tasting events and a five-course taster
menu curated by our head chef. The cellars have the capacity to hold up to 80,000 wine bottles and offers crisp whites from the northern Alps to the bold reds of the Southern Mediterranean. Every bottle comes from independent family-owned vineyards that share Bar Gigi’s passion for heritage, craft, and storytelling.
The Barolo room is the perfect hideaway for six to eight guests to enjoy a tasting menu experience, curated with wine pairings. Wine tastings take place like a journey through the caves to try different wines from across different regions. Nestled beneath the cellars is the cave, which hosts an exclusive Champagne cove and more than 1,000 bottles of renowned French labels.
Gabriella added: “Whether it’s a private celebration or one of our wine nights, we want to offer something unexpected — a space to slow down, sip something special, eat exceptional food and experience a bit of Gigi magic below the surface.”
Since opening Bar Gigi in 2021, head chef Connor Robson and his team have brought a modern approach to regional Italian cooking in Nottingham, showcasing lesserknown dishes from across Italy with a focus on seasonality, storytelling and exquisite pairings.
Cantine dell’Angelo now adds another layer to the Gigi experience, offering a more intimate setting for tailored events.
Private bookings and wine tastings for Cantine dell’Angelo are now open. The first calendar of ticketed events, including an olive oil tasting experience, has also launched. To find out more, visit www. bargigi.co.uk/olive-oil-tasting-experience/

Fashion
As Brits are scrambling to prepare for the next heatwave, there’s no better time to explore how you can stay cool and look stylish at work during the summer sunshine.
Fashion experts Zizzi Fashion have explored stylish workwear trends, as well as revealing three everyday household products to help prevent chafing in the office.
Summer’s staples
The ‘shirt dress’ is the go-to summer staple. Stylish, work-appropriate, and able to regulate body temperatures, making them the perfect way to dress professionally during the scorching heat. Collared shirt dresses are especially professional, although a slightly more casual shirt dress can also be dressed up with a lightweight blazer and bodydefining belt to achieve a more officeappropriate look.
Nothing screams workwear like a tailored suit. To make this formal staple perfect for the summer heat, people can wear a three-piece linen suit, there’s never been a better time to don this smart and versatile outfit. Also, if you start to work up a sweat, you can remove the blazer and shirt in favour of a chic and simple trousers-and-tailored-vest look.
Three household items to tackle chafing
It’s crucial to consider thigh chafing during the summer months. Due to the heat and excess moisture, it’s easier for the skin to develop sores when walking, and sometimes, this can start halfway through the day when you don’t have access to chafing shorts or cream – but there’s a simple solution.
Experts have revealed that you can tackle summer-time thigh chafing with three everyday household items. Petroleum jelly, commonly known as Vaseline, and coconut oil both help with chafing as the liquid formulas reduce friction.
Additionally, you can use cornstarch to absorb any excess moisture or body sweat, with some research suggesting that it has antibacterial properties that prevent infections caused by chafing, according to Medical News Today. These three items can also be used to prevent chafing in the underarm area, or anywhere in the body that is starting to cause discomfort, and can be easily stored inside a desk drawer, so you can work stress-free all summer long.
Breathable fabrics
By wearing the appropriate materials, anyone can avoid a sweaty afternoon in the workplace. Cotton, for example, is an affordable, lightweight fabric that
allows heat to escape the body.
Cotton t-shirts and trousers are one of the easiest ways to regulate body temperatures during the heatwave while also looking chic and professional.
Linen is another fantastic material for office workers. Made from the stems of flax plants, linen is a naturally breathable fabric that can soak up moisture or body sweat even more effectively than cotton. Linen shirts are a perfect, versatile way to battle the summer heat, whether you prefer to tuck them in or wear them unbuttoned for a more casual look, the options are endless. On the other hand, it’s best to avoid any synthetic materials during the heatwave. Polyester and nylon can trap heat and moisture close to the skin, raising body temperatures and causing rashes.
Stay sweat-free with light layers
Layering isn’t just for the winter months. In summer, you can stay cool by wearing layers to keep skin shaded and protect against sun exposure, it’s best to use lightweight fabrics, such as linen and cotton.
Additionally, chambray is a heat-proof material that can be layered during a heatwave. Often compared to denim, chambray is a thin, lightweight material that regulates body heat. A chambray shirt jacket or “shacket” can be layered in the sunshine with other breathable fabrics to help you stay cool in the office.
Stay Cool in style
From the rebellious streets of the 1960s to today’s runways, “flower power” has always been more than just a trend-it’s a statement. Bold blooms, swirling colors, and a carefree spirit define this iconic style, blending the optimism of a bygone era with the versatility of contemporary fashion. Whether it’s a daisy-print maxi dress, a flower-embroidered jacket, or pretty floral accessories, flower power invites you to dress with joy, confidence, and a touch of nostalgia. This is fashion in full bloom-because sometimes, the world needs a little more petal and a lot less metal.

MORE THAN just footwear
Today, a pair of trainers can say more about a person than a passport. They symbolize taste, status, rebellion, and belonging—all stitched into leather and laced up in rubber soles.
From the Adidas Superstars worn by Run-D.M.C. in the 1980s to the current hype-driven economy of limitededition Nike collaborations, trainers are not just accessories—they're statements. They speak of subcultures and subversion, of sport and street, of craftsmanship and consumerism.
Yet, somewhere along the way, the soul of the sneaker got tangled in resale apps and algorithmdriven exclusivity. What began as a democratized emblem of selfexpression now feeds a billion-dollar secondary market often inaccessible to the very communities that birthed its cultural relevance.
But trainers remain resilient in their symbolism. They are still what kids save up for, what artists design for, and what protestors march in. They blur lines—between high fashion and streetwear, between athleticism and artistry. They belong to no one and yet to everyone.
The question now is not whether trainers deserve to be in museum exhibits—they already are. The real question is whether we can preserve their essence in a world eager to commodify every thread of authenticity.

Property Showcase
Making waves in Beeston
Home seekers in Beeston and beyond got their first look at Trentside, the much-anticipated 319-home development alongside the town’s canal, as Platform Home Ownership opened the doors to its brand-new, Dallington show home, for a special launch weekend recently.
Held recently, the event welcomed a strong turnout of local residents, prospective buyers and curious visitors, keen to discover what the significant scheme will bring to the area. Guests enjoyed sweet treats, hot and cold drinks, and goody bags for both adults and children, while Platform’s friendly sales team were on hand to discuss the wide variety of homes and how Shared Ownership could help make homeownership more accessible.
The Dallington, a beautifully designed three-bedroom semi-detached home, was the focal point of the launch weekend. Available from £115,500 for a 30% share, this spacious home features an open-plan ground floor layout, fully-fitted kitchen with a stainless steel oven, hob and extractor, downstairs cloakroom, allocated parking and a turfed rear garden.
49Beans were on hand with drinks hot and cold. IMG_7521
Sustainable touches include air source heat pumps and an electric car charging point, designed to keep buyers’ energy bills to a minimum while cementing the high-quality development’s readiness for a greener future.
Located on Thane Road, to the east of Beeston Rylands, Trentside forms part of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, which is set to generate over 4,000 jobs. Delivered in partnership with five-star housebuilder Keepmoat, the development is Platform’s largest to date and offers a charming mix of two- and three-bedroom houses and apartments.
Shared Ownership has increasingly become a more popular and viable route towards owning a home outright, with Platform seeing over double the reservations at this stage of the 2025/26 financial year when comparing to the previous year.
The affordable homes scheme allows buyers to purchase a share of their home and pay rent on the remaining amount, typically buying between 10% and 75% of the property’s full market value. This lowers the amount needed for a deposit, with most deposits on Shared Ownership schemes between 5% and 10% of the share and not the full amount. Through the process of staircasing, owners can gradually purchase more shares in their home, up until they own 100% of their home outright*.
Lorraine Jenkins, Sales Consultant at Platform, said: “The launch weekend was a fantastic success, and it was wonderful to welcome so many people into The Dallington and see them excited about what Trentside will bring to Beeston.
“We’re proud to be making waves of change here, offering high quality, sustainable homes in a location with so much potential. Shared Ownership is increasingly becoming a more popular and viable route to securing a home of your own, and it was exciting to see that interest reflected over the weekend.”
Residents at Trentside will benefit from extensive transport links, including tram access via Nottingham’s NET network Beeston Railway Station, with connections
to Leicester, London, Derby and more.
The development is also served by green spaces along the River Trent, and access to high-quality local schools such as Beeston Fields Primary & Nursery and Beeston Rylands Junior School, rated Outstanding and Good respectively in their most recent Ofsted reports.
Beeston also offers a variety of independent shops, dining options, and leisure facilities. With modern amenities, including some of the best bars and restaurants, as well as great connectivity, vibrant entertainment, and a strong housing market, the up-and-coming town is a highly desirable location on the doorstep of one of the UK’s most popular cities.
Prices at Trentside start from £115,500 for a 30% share of a three-bedroom home.* For more information and to enquire about available properties, visit www. platformhomeownership. comtrentside or call 0333 200 7304.

MORE LIKE BACK TO THE CINEMA back to school?
As the long days of summer give way to cooler evenings and backto-school routines, The Arc Cinema is turning up the volume on value and nostalgia with a blockbuster September lineup that gives you every reason to head back through our doors.
At the heart of our September schedule is our much-loved annual promotion, Fiver Films, returning for another year of unbeatable value. Every Friday, all day long, and every weekend before 3pm, all tickets are just £5. Whether you're planning a solo escape, a family afternoon out, or a catch-up with friends, there's no better way to enjoy the magic of the movies.
We're also cranking up the retro vibes with our Back to the 80s Film Festival, a month-long celebration of the decade that brought us some of cinema’s most unforgettable moments. This year’s lineup includes Big, Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Weird Science (celebrating its 40th anniversary), and Stand By Me. These timeless classics deserve the big screen, and there’s no better time to revisit them — or experience them for the first time — than in a proper cinema, surrounded by popcorn and nostalgia.
Of course, it's not all retro. September is stacked with a phenomenal slate of new releases, including the hotly anticipated Downton Abbey: The Finale, which promises to wrap up the beloved saga with all the grace, wit and drama fans have come to adore. Horror fans are in for a chilling treat with The Conjuring: Last Rites, while music lovers will be thrilled to see Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, bringing the legendary band back for one final, absurdly loud ride. These titles are just the tip of the iceberg — our screens will be packed with something for everyone, every day.
And if you’re looking to squeeze even more value out of your visit, our midweek offers continue to deliver. From Crazy Tuesday, where every seat is just £5, to Date Night Thursday, which combines great films with great savings for couples, we’re making cinema nights affordable and accessible. Our Silver Screen programme offers specially curated screenings for over-60s (with a complimentary tea or coffee included), and our Kids Club provides affordable weekend screenings for younger movie fans and their families. On top of all this, our fantastic value Family Ticket is available every day — just £30 for a family of four to enjoy the latest releases in comfort and style.
So while the kids are heading back to the classroom and normal routines are returning, don’t forget to make time for fun, for laughter, for edge-of-your-seat moments and unforgettable memories. This September, it’s not just back to school — it’s Back to the Cinema.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale
Bill Kenwright's awardwinning production of the international smash hit musical, Blood Brothers will continue to captivate audiences old and new later this year when the 2025 Autumn tour visits Nottingham.
Vivienne Carlyle leads the cast as Mrs. Johnstone. Her performance earned her nightly standing ovations in the West End and has garnered widespread acclaim since she joined the national tour last year.
Continuing as the twin brothers, Mickey and Eddie, are Sean Jones and Joe Sleight with Gemma Brodrick reprising her role as Linda. Making a welcome return after time away from the production are Kristofer Harding as the Narrator, Paula Tappenden as Mrs Lyons and Danny Knott as Perkins.
Joining the cast for the Autumn 2025 tour are Michael Gillett (Sammy), Francesca Benton-Stace (Donna Marie/Miss Jones), and Latesha Karisa (Brenda). Also continuing with the tour are Tim Churchill (Mr. Lyons), Dominic Gore (Neighbour), Alex Harland (Policeman/Teacher)
and Graeme Kinniburgh (Postman/Bus Conductor).
Written by award-winning playwright Willy Russell, few musicals have been received with such acclaim as the multi-award-winning Blood Brothers. Considered 'one of the best musicals ever written' (Sunday Times), Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, and it has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (Daily Mail). The production has also achieved global success with sell-out seasons in the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Japan. It has won 4 awards for Best Musical in London and received 7 Tony Award nominations on Broadway.
This epic tale of Liverpool life started as a play, performed at a Liverpool comprehensive school in 1981, before opening at the Liverpool Playhouse in
birthplace for a two-week run marking the 100th anniversary of the Liverpool Empire Theatre, in a record-breaking season.
The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It's Not True. Blood Brothers tells the moving tale of twins separated at birth, who grow up on the opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences.
Willy Russell is one of this country's leading contemporary dramatists. His countless credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine. Educating Rita, originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, enjoyed a two-year run in the West End and was made into a movie starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters. Shirley Valentine also made the move from stage to screen in an enormously popular film starring Pauline Collins and Tom Conti.

Art Fest Nottingham is thrilled to announce its second edition, returning this September with a vibrant celebration of visual art that will transform the city into an open-air exhibition. Spanning from the iconic Victoria Centre through to Hockley and into the creative heart of Sneinton Market, this free, family-friendly festival runs from 10.00am to 6.00pm on September 20th and invites everyone to witness art in action.
Art Fest Nottingham 2025:
Art is the Heart'
This year’s theme, ‘Art is the Heart’, speaks to the transformative power of creativity and its ability to nurture individuality whilst also building connection in our communities. This festival is a tribute to that connection: art as a unifier, art as a movement, art at the heart of Nottingham.
A mission of creativity, community, and collaboration
Art Fest Nottingham champions connection across communities, elevation of artists and their work, and collaboration between the city’s creative and cultural organisations. We’re painting the town with a message that art belongs to everyone.
Growing bigger, bolder, and more colourful
In its debut year, Art Fest brought together 34 artists to paint 32 incredible artworks around the Green Heart of Nottingham. This year, over 50 artists will take part in the event, including Xeme from Hong Kong and Annatomix from neighbouring Birmingham. Local Nottingham artists, including Anna Wheelhouse, Boaster, Dilk, Emily Catherine, Kaption, Lesser Than Three, Mr Ray, Talia and more will be creating live murals that stretch from our bustling shopping district to our cultural quarter. Our city's very own Elroy is producing some of Nottingham's biggest artworks in collaboration with the Victoria Centre, which you can watch come to life on the days leading up to the festival. Art Fest 2025 is poised to make an even bigger impact – cementing Nottingham’s reputation as a must-visit destination for street art and culture.

Benjamin Kay, festival director commented:
“I created Art Fest as a way to bring people together through visual art and creativity. The art community in Nottingham is incredibly inspiring, and I’m in the privileged position of being part of it. The festival is my way of encouraging the people of Nottingham to see, experience and interact with the power of our artistic culture in an accessible way - on the street. I believe that art has the ability to develop individuality and self-confidence, all of which can make our city a more joyful place to call home. Art is the Heart!”
Alex Flint, CEO of It’s in Nottingham, the city’s Business Improvement District, added: “Art Fest Nottingham is a shining example of how creativity can animate our streets, connect our communities, and attract visitors to experience everything our city has to offer. It’s in Nottingham is proud to be the headline sponsor for an event that not only celebrates artistic talent from around the world but also champions our incredible local artists. This festival reflects the vibrant, welcoming, and innovative spirit of Nottingham – and we’re excited to see the city come alive with colour this September.”
Support Art Fest Nottingham 2025 Art Fest is proudly grassroots, built by local artists, organisers, and the people of Nottingham who believe in the power of creativity to bring us together. As the festival grows, there are exciting sponsorship opportunities for businesses, organisations, and individuals who want to be part of this celebration of art and community. With It’s in Nottingham as our headline sponsor, we invite others to join them in supporting a free, accessible, and vibrant festival that transforms our city’s streets into a canvas for creativity – inspiring residents and visitors alike.

Dance Party events at the Bonington Theatre
The Bonington Theatre in Arnold has announced a new series of Dance Party events, blending legendary concert films with live DJ sets for evenings of music and dancing.
Launching this September and running until February, the series offers music lovers the chance to relive iconic moments in live music history and dance the night away to DJ sets inspired by the films.
The series begins on Saturday 13 September with Bob Marley & The Wailers: Live! At the Rainbow 1977. Filmed during Marley’s Exodus era, this concert captures the energy and spirit of one of reggae’s most powerful moments. DJ Judge Success (Success Sound System) will set the tone before the screening and keep the rhythm going afterwards.
On Saturday 25 October, the spotlight turns to Stop Making Sense, the famous 1984 concert film by Jonathan Demme featuring Talking Heads. The film has been widely hailed as the greatest concert movie ever made and features unforgettable performances of songs like “Once in a Lifetime” and “Burning Down the House.” DJ Dom Gourlay (Drowned in
Sound) will take the reins on the decks for the evening. In the new year, on Saturday 10 January, audiences can enjoy Marvin Gaye: Greatest Hits Live in 1976, a rare and intimate concert recorded in Amsterdam. With classic songs like “It Takes Two” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” it’s a must-see for soul fans. DJ Tommy K will provide the soundtrack to the night.
The final event takes place on Saturday 21 February, with a special double-bill. First, Jake Bugg: Live at the Royal Albert Hall captures the Nottingham-born artist’s 2014 performance with guests including Johnny Marr and Michael Kiwanuka. Then, The Rolling Stones: Welcome to Shepherd’s Bush showcases a rare 1999 gig with a stripped-down setlist full of rarely played gems. DJs Dom Gourlay and Jimi Arundell return for this event, playing a mix of classic rock, indie and modern anthems.
Councillor Henry Wheeler, Portfolio Holder for Lifestyles, Health and Wellbeing said: “We’re thrilled to bring this exciting series to the Bonington Theatre. These Dance
Party events offer something truly special, combining legendary live music with a great night out right here in Arnold. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate music and film together as a community and I’d encourage everyone to come along and be part of it.” Each Dance Party event promises an immersive night of music and film, transforming the cinema experience into a celebration of sound and community.
All will take place at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold with doors opening at 7pm. Tickets are available from £4. Find out more and buy tickets online www.boningtontheatre.co.uk or visit the Bonington Theatre box office.

Belton Community Festival
celebrates local area for second year
After a successful debut event in 2024, Belton's Community Festival is back for its second year. Once again, Belton Estate near Grantham will be opening up access to art, heritage, and education, with a whole host of activities, talks and demonstrations running across Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September.
The National Trust site will be offering free entry throughout the weekend to enjoy all that the Estate has to offer, alongside the Festival’s array of exciting entertainment and quality stalls.
Sponsored by BEONTVUK, Chef Abul, Lincolnshire County Council and the NT Leicester Association, the Community Festival will see the historic Belton House become the backdrop to a giant stage hosting performances from circus acts, steel and blues bands, local dance schools, and operatic societies and choirs. Bonnets and Breeches, a regency dance society who were extremely well received as part of Belton’s Austen 250 celebrations this June, will also be performing.
A wide range of stalls will showcase local makers and traders selling cakes, chocolate, crafts, fragrances, soaps, sweets, jewellery, cider, artwork and more. Plus, visitors can enjoy the chance to chat with local charities and community groups, from rewilding initiatives to foster groups, Grantham Rivercare, Lincs Dog Training and others,
who will all have displays during the weekend offering information about what they do.
Visitors to the Festival can enjoy sampling a variety of delicious food vendors at the Festival too, with Greek, Caribbean and Indian food available alongside a wellstocked bar.
Laura Doherty, Senior Volunteering and Community Officer at Belton Estate, said: ‘At last year’s Festival, it was really rewarding to see the community come together to celebrate the local area and learn all about what it has to offer. We already have more stallholders and performers signed up for this year’s event so I’m certain it will be both bigger and better. We’re ready to welcome even more than the thousands of visitors who attended the first Festival, who might be experiencing Belton for the first time, or introducing family and friends to a favourite haunt!’
There will also be a chance to celebrate local flora and fauna with a butterfly survey taking place across the weekend. Families and individuals alike will be able to take part by collecting a survey sheet, complete with butterfly spotting tips, to fill in as they explore the estate. The initiative has been sponsored by Lincolnshire County Council and supports biodiversity work being undertaken by the National Trust to ensure that Belton remains a rich and dynamic wildlife haven.

September at Lamport is an exciting month of arts and culture, when we welcome thousands of visitors to two well-established events in the grounds of the Hall –Northants & Rutland Open Studios (NROS), and Heritage Open Days (HODs).
This year, we have an additional event as Opera Kipling will give an outdoor performance of Mozart’s, ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, on Monday 1st September. The company were formed in 2019, by young professionals to bring up-close Opera to audiences across the UK. Newlyproduced for the Camden Fringe 2025, this high quality, accessible, production of The Marriage of Figaro is designed to appeal to opera novices and veterans alike. Importantly, it also gives chances to emerging artists to add notable roles to their repertoire.
Northants and Rutland Open Studios launch their Central Exhibition on Friday 5th September and then remain open every Wednesday-Sunday until Saturday 4th October. Come along to enjoy a display of original artwork by 325 local artists working in a variety of different mediums. All the artwork is for sale and there are also prints available. A very popular aspect of the NROS exhibition is the Mini Masterpiece draw. Purchase a ticket for £10 to enter the draw for a randomly-selected original artwork. Tickets are limited to the number of
artworks available, and sell out very quickly. The exhibition also includes workshops, artists painting live in the gardens and Arty Bites - an evening opening with street food on Friday 26th September.
Heritage Open Days on Saturday 13th September. Costumed actors will bring Brewer’s Yard back to life as the original service quarters for the Hall. Discover how the laundry maid, gardener and cook would have gone about their day’s work and learn about the challenges of running such a large home without modern conveniences. There’s also arts and crafts for children, traditional craft demonstrations, and a chance to wander round the gardens whilst learning about the architectural evolution of the Hall. The event is entirely FREE including entry, parking and all activities.
Last year we were delighted to welcome Oxford University Dramatic Society to Lamport for their critically acclaimed interpretation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The students have now graduated and set up their own
Company to continue spreading their love of performing Shakespeare to new and seasoned audiences alike. This year they will be performing Twelfth Night with an evening performance on Friday 19th September and a matinee on Saturday 20th September. Their interpretations are modern yet remain authentic to the original play – a must watch for all theatre fans!
Taste of Game returns on Saturday 18th October with award-winning local chef Danny Tompkins. Danny is adept at creating beautifully presented and innovative dishes using only the finest, local, in-season ingredients. It’s sure to be an evening to remember in the refined surroundings of Lamport Hall alongside a live pianist and a charity auction, raising money this year for Northants Search & Rescue with some highly coveted auction lots.
Is it too early to mention Christmas? Too late! We have a limited number of dates available in December for your company to join us for a corporate Christmas party. Hosted in a heated après ski style marquee, you and your colleagues will be able to enjoy festive food to suit all tastes and a silent disco afterwards. Minimum of 50 people for an exclusive hire or join one of our shared party nights with a smaller group with prices starting from £50pp. Bookings are open now so get in touch on enterprises@lamporthall. co.uk to secure your date now.
The Hall closes to the public at the end of September with our last open day on Thursday 25th September. The gardens remain open on Wednesdays-Fridays, 9am-4pm until Friday 31st October.
The event will include a chance to sing a- long with sea shanties with The Jolly Jack Tars, join Pirate School and learn how to speak like a pirate, and for the young at heart to make their own pirate hats.
All pirates can follow Captain Crich’s Treasure Trail to try and find the pirate treasure as well as meeting the live parrots with Woodies Wings.
There will be four performances of ‘A Pirate’s Life for Me’, providing dramatic pirate fun with
Notice this Notice Theatre Company. The 20- minute show tells the tales of pirate princesses and the forgotten sirens of the sea.
The soft play area is also open as usual, and the vintage trams will be running from 10.30am to 5.00pm.
Events Manager, Candi Bell, said: “Anyone who wants to can dress as pirates for this event, which is new for this season, and I’m sure that all the family will enjoy these fun activities.”

How To Reduce Your Inheritance Tax Bill
Jack Green, Associate and Independent Financial Adviser in our Investment Management team at Nelsons explains the easiest ways to reduce your Estate’s likely Inheritance Tax Bill.
Expenditure
There are many ways to potentially reduce the value of your estate, but the often overlooked and simplest method is increased expenditure on items that are not included in your estate. This can often be difficult for individuals who have always lived ‘within their means’, but it is the simplest and possibly the most enjoyable method of combatting this ‘problem’.
Gifts
Another area that can be explored is the option for gifts during your lifetime. Contrary to popular belief, there is no limit on how much can be given. Gifts to individuals are what is known as a potentially exempt transfer (PET). If the person gifting lives for seven years from the point of gift, the amount will not be included in their estate for inheritance tax purposes. If the person passes away within 7 years, and their total gifts exceed the nil rate band of £325,000, taper relief reduces the inheritance tax due.
There are further exemptions for gifts that are immediately excluded from an estate for inheritance tax purposes, such as the annual exemption of up to £3,000 per tax year. If unused, this can be carried forward for one year.
There is also the small gift allowance of up to £250 per person per year (which can be given to multiple people), provided they have not been in receipt of the other exemption.
Habitual gifts from surplus income
An individual can also make regular gifts made from their surplus income (not capital) that do not affect their standard of living. There has been a rise of late in utilising assets to produce this natural income and subsequently gifting this money as surplus to beneficiaries. As with all gifts, it is important to keep a record of these to ensure the estate is assessed correctly.
Financial plan
Clients in this position often have concerns that if they give significant sums away, they may be depriving themselves and may one day need this money. They often cite
rising care costs as one item of expenditure that they need to plan for. The role of a financial adviser can be crucial in using forecasting and models to show the sustainability of withdrawals and the potential longevity of assets.
There have been recent, widely publicised changes to the treatment of pensions for inheritance tax purposes, and a financial adviser will ensure that the financial plan is adjusted to keep on top of any changes in legislation.
Comment
In summary, lifetime gifts as part of inheritance tax planning are often underused and can be more cost-effective and simpler than other options. A financial planner can include these steps as part of an overall financial plan to deliver outcomes that really matter.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING PRESENT
Schools place a lot of emphasis on school attendance - and for good reason. As a parent, of course you want your child to attend school regularly, but having the odd day off here and there doesn’t matter does it?
Taking too many “ad hoc” days off can have a major impact on a child’s success and can potentially hold them back educationally, socially and personally.
Whilst the government would expect every child to achieve 100% attendance rate, 95% attendance in school is still considered good. But even at 95% attendance, your child will have still missed 9 days of learning, which is equivalent to 50 hours of teaching. With 90% attendance, that doubles to nearly 100 hours of teaching! That’s a lot to catch up on, especially if your child is facing SATs or GCSEs and A-levels.
Data from a government report in 2019 showed that 84% of Key Stage 2 pupils who had 100% attendance achieved the expected standard, compared to 40% of pupils who were persistently absent across the key stage.* And that was before the repercussions of Covid and lockdown, which impacted a whole generation of children and
their education.
As a school with selective entry standards, at Nottingham Girls’ High School we see first hand what can happen to those who don’t attend school regularly. A child considered to be bright and talented can quickly fall behind, especially in literacy and maths, but also miss out socially and personally. Relationships with friends can suffer, alongside their academic performance which can impact their mental health. It’s a vicious circle which can be hard to break.
Whilst we don’t have all the answers, by offering an environment where girls are encouraged, inspired and love to learn, attendance does become easier to manage. A parent of two daughters at our school explains, “They love going to school and have seized the extensive opportunities, academic and vocational, available to them.”

More than just a School
Set in the heart of North Nottinghamshire, Worksop College is more than just a school; it is a thriving community with an extraordinary history and an exciting future. Surrounded by 330 acres of countryside, and neighbouring the National Trust’s Clumber Park, it offers pupils the space and opportunity to grow, discover, and excel.
At Worksop College, the focus is on the individual. Every pupil’s journey is different, and every talent is valued. Some arrive with a clear passion, whether that be a drive to attend one of the world’s finest universities, the determination to succeed as an elite athlete, or the creative flair to shine in art or music. Others are still exploring their path. Here, they are given the time, encouragement, and support to uncover hidden strengths and realise their potential.
The college is proud of its strong tradition of sporting excellence, producing alumni such as England Cricket Captain Joe Root and GB Hockey Captain Adam Dixon. Exceptional facilities, including cricket and astro pitches, tennis courts, a purpose-built sports hall, eighteen-hole golf course with TrackMan technology, and an on-site gym, ensure pupils can train at the highest level. The Girls’ Football Academy exemplifies the balance between academics and sport, supporting talented young players who have gone on to sign for professional clubs.
But Worksop College is not defined by sport alone. The creative arts flourish in a community that values self-expression, with a 306-seat theatre, a vibrant music school, and a dedicated art department
inspiring future performers, musicians, and designers. Innovation is nurtured in the Design and Technology Hub, equipped with cutting-edge tools such as 3D printers and laser cutters, while academic curiosity is fuelled by specialist facilities including a chemistry lecture theatre, cookery studio, and outdoor science classroom.
Alongside academic and co-curricular opportunities, wellbeing sits at the heart of life at the college. A dedicated Wellbeing Team, led by a full-time Mental Health Lead, ensures every pupil has access to support. The Willow Wellbeing Hub provides a calm space for reflection and guidance, while a programme of mindfulness, resilience workshops, yoga, and counselling helps pupils take ownership of their mental health. The college’s strong House system creates a close-knit sense of belonging, while a 24hour Health Centre ensures physical care is always available.
Worksop College is a place where pupils are challenged, inspired, and supported to become the very best version of themselves. It is a school that looks forward with ambition while remaining rooted in the values of community and care. For families seeking an environment where children can truly flourish, this is a place to discover.

You need to stop thinking and start doing. If you feel as though you are stuck in a rut, then its time to look at ways of doing things differently. Your health is your wealth, so whether it’s a spiritual retreat, a new wardrobe, a course of study or going on that dream holiday, seize every opportunity you can to enjoy each day to its utmost. There may be a huge question mark looming over one particular area in your personal life which needs addressing.

Take advantage of every opportunity to explore new and different ways of improving your earning powers and perhaps take advantage of turning a spare time interest into a money making venture. An expansive and lucky trend is kicking in giving you an entrepreneurial edge to your ideas and efforts. Overseas investments should prove fortunate as will investing your money in property on the home front. You are now starting to live in some very exciting times.

Interesting developments in your personal life are making you feel as though you are living on the edge of a precipice. Little wonder you are feeling so disorientated and confused. Perhaps someone is playing mind games and maybe you are letting them get away with having it all their own way. Eventually you will start to see that fate has some great things in store once you open your eyes to the world and all the splendid gifts it has to offer.
You will recognise opportunities to double if not quadruple your prosperity as long as you believe in your abilities to achieve your goals. You will be on the move leaving the past behind and regardless what your line of work is, everything improves when you are in the right company. A new friendship could blossom into something important. Good fortune is smiling upon you. Make this fortuitous period work to your advantage.
Add plenty of variety to your days but try not to complicate things in the process. Tie up loose ends and get your act together, especially if you are aiming to make major purchases and a few long, overdue changes to both your professional and personal life. An on off romance with someone is forcing you to stand back and take stock. If something doesn’t tick all the boxes, then why bother wasting your time in it?

If in doubt, pull out. Always listen to your gut instincts regarding anything that does not sound nor feel right. Remember, other people selling you a get rich quick scheme is because they want to cash in for themselves leaving others cash strapped and out of pocket. Someone may ask you out on a date and although it may leave you feeling a trite nervous, what do you actually have to lose?
A newcomer to your circle is very sensitive, but they could also spell trouble. A dear and trusted friend is going to confide some important information. A magical door is opening in your personal life and if you are interested, you may meet someone soon who will fill an empty void and fulfil your dreams and deepest wishes and desires. Make a clean break with the past and start living the life you so rightly deserve.

A touch of realism can lead to success and good fortune, so take your head out of the clouds and start getting proactive. Romance will be high on your agenda and when you do meet someone you are intriguingly drawn towards, you could find yourself feeling out of your depth. Even though all the warning signs will be there, there is nothing you enjoy than a little bit of risk taking and excitement.
As your confidence and self esteem strengthens, golden opportunities will come knocking at your door that include some very interesting introductions with some fascinating new people. There will be plenty of variety in your social life, but this could also mean letting go of everything which you have outgown and have no further use for. Pay attention to your health and wellbeing understanding that you must rest when required to.
Fresh air, exercise and a positive attitude is your answer to enjoying life to the full. By remaining strong and stalwart, you will attract individuals towards you who are like minded and who appreciate your finer qualities. There could be a hint of romance in the air with someone very special and this could lead to a life long togetherness. Someone from your past still hasn’t given up all hope of a reconciliation, but you may not be interested, preferring to leave certain doors firmly closed.
Emotionally or financially you could be stuck in the middle of a rock and a hard place. Just know that its impossible to please everyone because they will not consider pleasing you in return. Someone quite close to you can be most unreliable and if you notice, you are being fobbed off with feeble excuses yet again. Focus on long term issues such as investments, savings, pensions and the property market.
Focus your energies on making your home as sumptuous, comfortable and welcoming as possible. A friendship that is no more has to stay this way even though you may attempt to revive it. For those of you already in a happy and harmonious relationship, you must never forget about your own needs and inner contentment. Never make the mistake of changing yourself to please others because it never ends well.
Destinations
Irresistible Beauty
Sicily is the largest of the Italian islands, separated from the continent by the Strait of Messina and surrounded by the Ionian, the Tyrrhenian and the Mediterranean Seas. It is one of the pearls of Southern Italy and can be discovered, understood and experienced through a series of itineraries dedicated to areas of interest, ranging from nature to history and traditions.
Sicily’s great volcanoes are symbols of the irresistible beauty and vitality of this incredibly charming region. The greatest active volcano in Europe, Etna, can be found on the eastern coast where its spectacular eruptions have created unique landscapes over the centuries. Visitors interested in breathtaking landscapes will find many to choose from among the protected reserves in Etna's natural parks. The Madonie and the Nebrodi parks, as well as the volcanic paradise of Pantelleria, are sprinkled with enchanting oases like that of ‘Pertusa di Notaro’ (‘Cold Cavity’), a grotto noted for the extremely fresh air that passes through it, and Dammusi, the old stone houses typical of the island.
A world treasure certified by UNESCO is the archaeological area of Agrigento, one of the most important towns of Magna Graecia. The famous ‘Valley of the Temples’ - surrounded by green olive groves, almond trees, citrus orchards and vineyards that stretch out to the sea with all its imposing and elegant monuments - fantastically evokes an atmosphere of 2500 years ago, when the ancient Akagras Agrigentum was a center of power and learning.
Nature seems to have endowed all its wonders to this land: mountains, hills and above all the sea, with its incredible colours, its crystal-clear water and the beauty of its sea beds, which can be enjoyed in so many different ways: relaxing on one of the many coastal beaches, exploring the wonderful sea beds, or windsurfing on the majestic blue waves.
The Belpaese has always been considered one of the most sought-after destinations for thermal cures, a form of natural medicine existing in Italy since the Roman ages. A region of water and volcanoes, Sicily offers a wide range of treatments for those who wish to unwind from the stress of daily life. The most renowned spas are Sciacca, with its famous Stufe di San Calogero (caves where the high concentration of steam reaches a temperature of about 40° C), or the Thermae of Acireale, where underground seawater mixes with sulphur water from Etna.
There is plenty of choice for those who enjoy festivals and cultural events, too. Countless events take place every year in the amazing scenery of Taormina’s Ancient Theater, including the wellknown Cinema Festival, an award ceremony for the best films. Many festivals are dedicated to the Patron Saints of Sicily as well, mixing faith, folklore and tradition into a display of the Sicilians’ profound religious devotion. The Festival of Saint Rosalia in Palermo and the Festival of Saint Agatha in Catania are just a few of the many events that take place every year throughout the region.
Whether you’re looking for an active weekend or a relaxing break, Sicily boasts beauty, tranquillity and fantastic attractions, sure to make your holiday one to remember.
Walk on the Wildside
Planning a safari holiday for the family is no small feat and with so many options, choices can be tough. Real Africa share the benefit of their own first-hand family safari experiences to ensure your safari is unforgettable for all the right reasons.
For a first-time family safari, they recommend either Kenya or South Africa as the very best destinations. Both offer fantastic variety and density of wildlife along with the chance to enjoy behind-the-scenes conservation experiences.
KENYA
Situated in the East of Africa and easily reached by direct flights from London, the compact country of Kenya offers a classic safari experience. Home to the iconic golden plains of the Masai Mara and the lofty peak of Mount Kenya, you’ll find excellent contrast in both landscapes and wildlife. Morning and evening guided game drives offer the chance to see all the ‘Big Five’ (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) along with many other species, while the beautiful palmfringed beaches of the Kenyan coast are the perfect place to unwind. With very little time change to bother you (GMT+3 hours), friendly people, great family accommodation and an array of family-friendly activities including ‘Little Warrior’ programmes and special visits, such as the AFEW giraffe centre to hand-feed a giraffe, Kenya is a fabulous choice for families
with children over the age of about 7 years old. Did you know, Kenya’s Laikipia region was the inspiration for the Lion King? You can even go and see Pride Rock!
South Africa
For families with children of any age, the Cape coast of South Africa is a rewarding wildlife holiday choice with attractions on land and sea. From the stunning oceanside city of Cape Town, where you can paddle amongst penguins at Boulders Beach and watch for whales from the cliff tops of the world-famous Garden Route, to the ‘Big Five’ malaria-free Eastern Cape game reserves, where you can learn about rhino and big cat conservation and see elephants galore, this is a superb option for families. Thanks to a favourable exchange rate, it is also one of the best value destinations in Africa. For maximum flexibility, and ideal if travelling with very young children, you can even self-drive and self-cater in some areas with lots of small and characterful properties to choose from.
FURTHER AFIELD
For families with teens, or for a second visit to Africa, Real Africa suggests Botswana, Zambia or Zimbabwe. Paddle a mokoro (dug-out canoe) down the quiet channels of the Okavango, stake out a waterhole, raft the Zambezi, head out on a night drive, or zip-line above Victoria Falls. For extended families, Zambia offers
wonderful safari houses.
On safari you enjoy game drives in the early morning and late afternoon with plenty of time to relax during the day. To give yourself the best chance of seeing and experiencing as much as possible Real Africa recommends 3 nights per lodge/ camp as optimum. After 6 nights, the early mornings may begin to take their toll so lazy days at a lake or river lodge, or on the beach work well in contrast.
A few nights under canvas in a traditional
Keen to experience a family getaway with a difference?
Treat the kids to the holiday of a lifetime on an African safari with Real Africa, a travel company providing handcrafted trips that journey to the heart of the African bush.
tented camp is highly recommended –walk-in tents are very comfortable complete with en-suite bathrooms and private decks – some camps offer family tents and plunge pools. Lodges range in size and luxury from very small properties with a handful of thatched rondavels to larger hotel style properties with interconnecting rooms, air-con, safari spa and pool. Generally, the smaller the property the more it will set you back. Location is king.
Custom safari vehicles vary from place to place – some are completely open, others have a ‘pop-top’ roof. They usually seat around 6-8 guests and it is commonplace to game drive with other guests, although some camps do offer exclusive-use vehicles.
In Kenya and Tanzania Real Africa offers the option to set off on safari with your own private vehicle and English-speaking driver/ guide.
SAFARI AND BEACH BREAKS
What could be better than a week on safari combined with a week on the beach? Kenya and Tanzania are ideal choices. Safari in the Masai Mara before relaxing on the white sands of Diani beach in Kenya, or enjoy a safari exploring Tanzania’s northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara and Tarangire) in your own private vehicle with driver/guide, before flying to the idyllic Spice Island of Zanzibar.
Real Africa provide tailored, all-inclusive safari and beach break experiences and holidays to all the destinations mentioned in this feature. For more information visit www.realafrica.co.uk

A City That Dances Through Time
There are few cities that can charm, energize, and envelop you all in the space of a weekend. Madrid is one of them.
Spain’s capital is a city of juxtapositions: grand boulevards and intimate alleyways, centuries-old cathedrals shadowed by avant-garde art spaces, timeless tapas bars pulsing beside trendy rooftop lounges. It’s a place where tradition and vitality are not at odds but in constant, exhilarating conversation.
Arriving in Madrid on a Friday evening feels like being invited into a celebration already in progress. The city doesn’t wind down for the weekend; it winds up. Locals spill out of terrazas onto plazas, sipping vermouth and laughing with the kind of warmth that feels contagious. There is no rush—time bends here, as if stretched by siesta and strung together by the late-night rhythm of flamenco and conversation.
Art lovers will find Madrid magnetic. The "Golden Triangle of Art"—the Prado, Reina Sofía, and ThyssenBornemisza—holds more masterpieces than can be absorbed in
one weekend, but even a glimpse of Velázquez’s "Las Meninas" or Picasso’s "Guernica" can leave a lasting imprint. These galleries are not mausoleums of the past; they are living, breathing spaces that reveal the soul of Spain through every brushstroke.
For food, Madrid is a city of infinite choice. From bustling food markets like Mercado de San Miguel to the backstreet bodegas of La Latina, each bite tells a story. Whether it’s a simple tortilla española or an experimental Michelinstarred dish, the city honors its culinary roots while embracing innovation.
But perhaps Madrid’s most compelling quality is its sense of ease. Unlike other European capitals, where the pressure to "do it all" can feel overwhelming, Madrid invites you to slow down. Stroll through the Retiro Park, browse the bookstalls along the Cuesta de Moyano, or simply sit with a café con leche and watch the world go by. Here, leisure isn’t laziness—it’s a philosophy.
A weekend in Madrid isn’t enough to see it all, and that’s precisely the point. The city doesn’t demand your checklist—it asks only for your presence. In return, it offers authenticity, joy, and a reminder that sometimes, the best way to experience a city is simply to let it unfold.
Madrid doesn’t just welcome you; it embraces you. And when you leave, it lingers— like the last note of a guitar in a quiet, moonlit plaza

treat feet
What people often don’t understand is that the correct products used in the right way can really make a difference in transforming the feet.
For example, it is important that feet are always filed when the skin is dry like before you have showered. The reasons for this are quite simple: firstly, a foot that has been bathed masks the areas that need to be treated you simply cannot see the dry skin or callus in the same way. Our Professional Foot File is known as the RollsRoyce of foot files, the Margaret Dabbs® London multi-award-winning Foot File is the ultimate tool for achieving professional results at home.
If a foot is prone to cracks in the skin, bathing will weaken the tissues, making the crack more likely to open up. We recommend our PURE Cracked Heel Treatment Balm helps eradicate even the most problematic and persistent cracks in the skin of the feet. It forms a waterproof seal to help relieve, bind and repair any cracks.
Similarly, intensive moisturisation is essential to a superior pedicure, as feet go through the ageing process in exactly the same way as the face. The skin thins; the sub cutaneous fat is lost and sweat glands reduce in effectiveness. So, it is important to re-introduce moisture into the skin of the

feet. You would not consider exfoliating the face without following it with a foot moisturiser, the same applies to the feet.
Do bear in mind that the skin of the feet is 12 times thicker than that of the rest of the body, which is why a body lotion just will not work. Our award-winning Miracle Foot Cream should be your go to daily foot moisturiser. Why cooking from scratch is easier than you think
Amie Leckie, Health
and Wellbeing
Specialist
at Heart Research UK,
will explore why cooking from scratch is important for our health.
Delve into the benefits for our cardiovascular health, and provide practical tips for those looking to start or increase their home cooking.
Cooking from scratch is a time-honoured tradition in many cultures, representing not just a method of food preparation but a way of life that promotes health, sustainability and community. In today’s modern world, dominated by processed foods and fast-paced living, many of us have lost touch with the art of traditional food preparation and, along with it, lost the health benefits that go hand-in-hand with time spent in the kitchen. Committing to cooking more meals from scratch can bring substantial health benefits and reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease.
Amie Leckie, Health and Wellbeing Specialist at Heart Research UK, said:
“The term ‘cooking from scratch’ means preparing everything yourself using basic, whole food ingredients, no shop-bought jars or premade food items in sight. However, not many of us have time to make our own pasta or mill our own flour, and you do not need to do this to reap the benefits of home cooking.
“Instead, focusing on ‘modern day
cooking from scratch’ and how we can make the best of what modern day convenience offers, without compromising our health or being left spending hours in the kitchen.”
The health benefits of cooking from scratch
Nutrient quality
Foods prepared from fresh ingredients are usually richer in essential nutrients compared to highly processed foods such as ready-made meals, instant soups, frozen pizzas and flavoured yoghurts. Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants found in whole foods are often lost or decreased during processing. By cooking from scratch, we ensure our bodies receive the full spectrum of nutrients necessary for optimal function.
Control over ingredients
When we cook at home, we have complete control over the ingredients we use. This allows us to avoid unhealthy additives, preservatives, and unhealthy fats commonly found in processed foods. We can also adjust the levels of sugar, salt and fat to suit our dietary needs and preferences, to keep track of how much of these substances we are consuming each day.
Promotion of healthy eating habits
Home cooking encourages mindful eating and portion control. It helps establish a healthy relationship with food, where the focus is on quality and nourishment rather than convenience and quantity. Cooking from scratch also leads to better digestion. When we start cooking and creating different aromas in the kitchen, our body begins to anticipate food and readies itself for digestion, which can mean fewer uncomfortable symptoms such as bloating.
Cooking from scratch and cardiovascular health
Reduction of sodium intake
High dietary sodium or salt intake is linked to high blood pressure, a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. Processed foods often have a high sodium content, as it helps keep them fresh for longer. By preparing meals at home, we can control and significantly reduce our sodium intake, which helps maintain healthy blood pressure levels.
Healthy fats
Cooking from scratch allows us to choose healthier fats. For example, when cooking
at home, we can choose to use olive oil or even avocado oil to avoid unhealthy oils found in many processed foods. These healthy fats can improve cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Increased
fibre intake
Whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, and legumes are high in dietary fibre, which is essential for both digestive and cardiovascular health. Processed foods are often low in fibre and contain minimal vegetables and wholegrains. Fibre helps lower cholesterol levels, regulate blood sugar, and promote a healthy weight, all of which are beneficial for the heart.
Antioxidants and antiinflammatory foods
Fresh ingredients, especially fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices, are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. They help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, which can lead to the development of coronary heart disease. How to start cooking more from scratch Transitioning to cooking from scratch can seem daunting at first, especially if you are used to the convenience of processed foods or have limited skills in the kitchen.
Amie says: “It is important to remember you don’t have to overhaul everything at once, and with a bit of planning and learning, it can become a manageable and rewarding habit that you might even find fun! It is important to remember that you are building new habits, and this can take time. Have a look at our Healthy Tip on habit formation and behaviour change, and use our Goal Setting Planner and Habit Tracker Wheel to help you stay on track.
Plan your meals
Meal planning is a really important step in cooking from scratch, and one that cannot be missed. Set aside some time each week to plan your meals and make a detailed shopping list. Taking time to plan and ensure you have all the necessary ingredients will save you lots of time throughout the week and reduce the temptation to opt for convenience foods.
Start simple and slow
If you are new to cooking, begin with simple recipes, and as you gain confidence and skills, you can gradually tackle more complex dishes. Invest in some cookbooks or head to our recipes page on our website to find some hearthealthy recipes you want to try. Pick one or two things that you currently buy pre-made and learn to make your own versions. This might be tomato sauce to use for pasta
and lasagne, or homemade stock to use in soups and stews. Once you’ve mastered a few staples, go ahead and master some more; you don’t have to do it all at once.
Batch cooking and meal prep
Batch cooking and meal prepping in advance make cooking from scratch easier during the week. You can prepare large quantities or components of meals, such as a tray of roasted vegetables, salads, and parboiled chips. Store them in the fridge for use throughout the week to save time. Even chopping up your vegetables in advance and putting them in containers in the fridge will speed up tea times and ensure you have healthy options readily available. You can also double up recipes and save half for another day or freeze for the next week – some great meals that freeze well are chilli, soup, fish pie, lasagne and curry.
Learn basic cooking techniques and measurements
Understanding basic cooking techniques, such as chopping, sautéing, roasting, and steaming, can significantly enhance your efficiency and confidence in the kitchen. There are many free online tutorials available to help you build these skills. Similarly, knowing how to convert different measurements, such as cups to grams, can make your cooking experience much nicer. We’ve created a helpful Cooking from Scratch Guide that you can print and pop on your fridge.
Keep healthy cupboard essentials
Keep your cupboards stocked with essential ingredients like wholegrains such as rice, pasta and quinoa, legumes
including beans, chickpeas, lentils, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices. Having these staples on hand makes it easier to prepare nutritious meals without frequent trips to the supermarket. Taking this one step further, if you always have frozen, homemade pasta sauce in the freezer and wholewheat pasta in the cupboard, you have a go-to healthy, quick meal whenever you need it.
Involve
the family
Cooking can be a fun and educational activity for the whole family, and getting those people who you live with involved in the process will make it much easier and enjoyable for everyone. Involving children in meal preparation can teach them valuable skills and means they have a positive attitude toward healthy eating, encouraging them to continue the art of cooking as they grow up, which will offer lots of health benefits.
Amie explains: “Cooking from scratch is more than just a method of food preparation, it is a way to better health and wellbeing. It will require some initial effort and learning, but the rewards are well worth it. The benefits of cooking extend beyond the impact on our physical health; many people find cooking relaxing, and this can contribute to our mental well-being by offering time to switch off from daily stressors.
“Time spent in the kitchen together offers family bonding time, and cooking from scratch is of great benefit to the environment as we reduce the need for single-use packaging and plastics. Get in the kitchen, get creative and start your journey to cooking from scratch and better health.”

Collagen Coffee
Sip Your Way to Radiance: Why You Should Care About Stirring Collagen Into Your Coffee
If there’s one thing we Nottinghamshire locals know how to do, it’s savour a good cup of coffee. Whether it's your daily fix at the kitchen table or a leisurely Sunday treat with the weekend papers, the ritual is non-negotiable. But what if your morning mug could offer more than just a caffeine kick? What if, with a simple scoop, your coffee could be the secret ingredient to glowing skin and happy, limber joints? Welcome to the world of collagen coffee, the latest buzzword gracing kitchens from Beeston to Bingham.
Why Collagen, and Why Now?
Wellness trends come and go (kale smoothies, avocado toasts), but collagen is firmly here to stay. Collagen, the most abundant protein in our bodies, plays a starring role in maintaining skin elasticity, supporting joint health, and keeping our hair and nails in tip-top shape. Sadly, as time passes, our natural reserves of collagen start to dwindle—think less babysoft skin, more creaky knees.
Enter Wellness Lab Collagen, the beautyand-wellness booster you didn’t know your coffee needed. By adding a scoop to your daily brew, you can help replenish those reserves, smooth out fine lines, and give your joints the TLC they crave—all without overhauling your routine.
The Secret Ingredient of Glowing, Resilient You:
• Radiant Skin: Collagen supports your skin’s structure, helping to keep it plump and smooth.
• Joint Support: Perfect for everyone from Sunday strollers to park runners, collagen can maintain flexible, pain-free joints.
• Strong Nails & Glossy Hair: Add a glossy touch to your look, right down to your fingertips.
And the Science behind the Magic: Wellness Lab Marine Collagen contains hydrolysed peptides, which means the protein has been enzymatically broken down into smaller peptides that are more readily absorbed in the digestive tract . It has no additives which means that you’re consuming maximum levels of protein in every cup. Every teaspoon adds an easy 5g of protein to your diet.
No-Fuss, No-Mess: The 10-Second Wellness Ritual
Forget faffy prep and obscure ingredients, Wellness Lab Collagen is all about maximum benefit, minimal effort. All you need is your favourite coffee and a teaspoon of collagen powder, which dissolves instantly in your coffee. It’s tastefree, so all you’ll notice is a rich, creamy mouthfeel—no weird aftertastes here.
Here’s how to make your cup
glow:
• Brew your morning coffee as usual — espresso, pour-over, or French press, the choice is yours.
• Add one teaspoon of Wellness Lab Collagen powder to your mug.
• Pour the piping hot coffee into the mug
• Stir thoroughly until dissolved.
• Top with your favourite milk or alt-milk for a frothy finish.
• Sip and smile—you’re nourishing your skin and joints before 9am.
Bon Appétit! And next time someone asks about your secret to a healthy glow, you can tell them it all starts with your morning coffee.

Making More Room
Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.
Assess Feasibility
Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.
Plan Your Space
Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.
Structural Considerations
Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.
Lighting and Ventilation
Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Access
Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.
Utilities
Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.
Finishing Touches
Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.
Budget
Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.
Professional Help
Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.
By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.
How to decorate
WITH CANVAS ART PRINTS
Canvas is a great way to lift a space, adding a stylish and more luxurious touch to gallery walls, creating interest in hallways and adding artsy vibes to other rooms.
Here are two simple ways to make your home more homely with canvas art.
PERFECT FOR HALLWAYS AND LANDINGS
Poster Store canvases are printed all the way around the frame, meaning that if you approach the canvas from the side, you will get an inkling of how the whole piece looks before you see it from the front. This makes unframed canvas especially good for decorating hallways and landings – spaces that people move through – as they look great from every angle!
Placing canvases on picture shelves or on top of sideboards or dressers can help to create a bohemian feel. Mixing both framed and unframed canvas together can create a unique gallery wall, and, since you don’t need to consider how the light will reflect on the glass with canvas art, it’s a practical choice for walls that face windows.
GET A PREMIUM LOOK FOR LESS
Decorating on a budget often rules out buying original art, but don’t let that stop you from creating an artsy vibe at home. Printed canvas gives a creative and bohemian feel to a room, like chic hotel rooms and cute neighbourhood cafes, whilst not breaking the bank.
Opting for an unframed canvas is a great way to create arty vibes in your space. Whether you choose a personalised canvas – printed to commemorate a special life moment – or something created by our inhouse artists and photographers. Decorating with canvas offers many possibilities for creating a more dynamic living space. You can make hallways more interesting, create variation in gallery walls and create a luxury look at home for less.
Poster Store’s range of canvases offers everything from serene beach scenes, to fashion photography inspired canvases to personalised prints that commemorate special occasions. Explore our collection to find a canvas print you love today.

SUSTAINABLE GARDEN MAKEOVERS
It’s not just interior schemes that benefit from a fresh coat of paint. Revitalising garden structures with a splash of colour can impact the look and feel of your outside space, say the experts at wood paint specialists Thorndown.
Caroline Thornborough, Design Director at Thorndown, said: “Garden structures have to withstand everything the Great British weather can throw at them, so it’s no surprise they need some TLC from time to time. “A fresh pop of colour will breathe new life into tired garden structures and offer an instant mood booster.” Here Caroline shares her top tips on how to achieve a sustainable summer makeover with Thorndown’s wood paint:
Select your colour palette based on shades that will fit with your existing garden design and your plants, and most importantly, bring a smile to your face. Use sample pots to make sure you’re getting exactly the colour you want and always go with a wood paint that has been specially formulated for exterior use. This will ensure your chosen colours last longer. At Thorndown, we use exterior grade colour pigments, meaning that the colour you choose is the colour you’ll see for years and years.
Preparation is key when it comes to the perfect finish, so before you consider painting your old, tired furniture, sand off any rough patches or loose old coatings that will show or affect the finish.Wooden furniture may need preserving with a wood preserver. If your furniture is made with treated softwood, remove any surface residue from the pressure-treatment process. If your furniture is old, make sure
the surface is thoroughly cleaned. Wash off any dirt with soapy water or use a pressure-washer to blast off persistent dirt or algae. Washing with a light bleach/water solution will also help to kill off algae. Don’t rush to start your paint job. Make sure your wood is dry otherwise coatings won’t fix properly to the timber, affecting the paint’s performance and longevity.
To ensure the perfect finish, apply a knotting agent or stain-blocking primer to prevent possible tannin staining of the paint coating. However, if you’re a fan of all things natural, don’t worry about it and let nature take its course. If there is any rust on fixings treat the metal surfaces or use paint with flash rust inhibitor like Thorndown Wood Paint to stop rust from forming on non-galvanised metal or metal screws/nails other than stainless steel.
And one last thing before you start applying your paint. Check the weather to make sure rain isn’t forecast for at least 24 hours. This will allow plenty of time for the paint to dry and fix/bond properly.Apply your first coat of wood paint using a high-quality paint brush, roller or sprayer and leave to dry for one to two hours. If you’re leaving the paint to dry in the sunshine, it will dry much quicker. After you have applied a second coat, leave this to dry for at least 12 hours. While it might feel dry, the curing/fixing process takes a lot longer and the more time you give it, the better.”
Thorndown’s range of technically excellent wood paint is available now, priced at £22 for 750ml. It is available in 72 colours, and Thorndown offers a colour matching service.

It’s one of the home’s hardest working spaces, and if your hallway is ready for a refresh, eco paint brand Thorndown is on hand to help
Caroline Thornborough, Design Director of Thorndown, said: “Never overlook the hallway when it comes to interior décor.
“While many might think of it as a thoroughfare, somewhere to pass through as you navigate the home, it’s so much more. It is often the last thing you see as you leave the home and the first room that awaits as you return. And while it might not add value in quite the same way as a beautiful kitchen or a stunning bathroom, it is sure to leave a lasting impression.”
Thorndown’s wall paint is an excellent choice for hallways. Not only does it look gorgeous, but it is highly durable –perfect for high-traffic areas.
Plus, there is no need to prime surfaces before application and it can be used on walls, ceilings, metal radiators and wooden surfaces including doors, window frames and skirting boards. It can also be painted on plaster or synthetic ceiling roses and coving –ideal for fans of colour drenching.
Plus, Thorndown Wall Paint dries really quickly and in warm conditions it can be ready for a second coat in 30 minutes to one hour. Only two coats
are needed as the paint quality is so high, and colour pigments so rich and full that you get great coverage and opacity.
What’s more, the gorgeous flat matt finish of Thorndown Wall Paint is further elevated by the VOC free exterior grade colour pigments that give a superior and rich depth of colour that lasts for many years.
Caroline said: “A hallway sets the tone for the rest of the home and refreshing the paint job is the perfect way to elevate your welcome.”
Thorndown’s Wall Paint is available available in 72 colours and a UV Clear, while the Peelable Glass Paint is available in 24 opaque colours and 14 translucents, with prices starting at £22 for 750ml.
Inspired by the beautiful countryside and heritage of the West Country where the factory is based, the husband-and-wife team behind Thorndown, Ben and Caroline Thornborough, blend their passions for art, design, science and the natural world in their ecologically advanced paints.

LIVING ROOM STOVE DESIGN IDEAS
As autumn approaches, there’s something so comforting about the gentle flicker of flames in a well-designed living room.
Whether it’s a classic wood-burning stove or versatile multi-fuel option, a stove offers practical warmth alongside a captivating focal point, bringing a sense of cosiness and character into a space. Today’s living room schemes effortless blend comfort and style, with stoves often integrated in seamless ways that feel both welcoming and inviting.
To help inspire your next living room redesign, Joanna Humphreys, Fire and Stove Specialist at Direct Stoves shares her thoughts on the best design ideas for integrating a stove into your space.
Creating a stylish focal point with a statement surround "A stove framed by a statement surround, particularly in timeless materials such as marble, does more than just serve a practical purpose. It can become the centrepiece of the room, drawing in the eye and grounding the space with elegance.
Whether you opt for dramatic veining or soft, subtle tones, the stove surround sets
the tone for the entire design scheme. In addition to creating an attractive focal point, the mantelpiece provides an ideal place to store books, trinkets and other decorative objects, making it a highly functional addition too."
Let the stove take centre stage “Sometimes less really is more when it comes to living room design. Instead of opting for a surround or boxing in your stove, look to let your wood-burner shine by embracing a colour-drenched wall instead.
This pared-back approach will help to highlight the details of your stove, while the rich, colourful hues add depth and drama to the wall. Complete the final look by opting for accessories in a contrasting colour and to maximise visual impact, choose a stove model with a large viewing pane, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the flicker of flames from the comfort of your sofa.”
Add character with period details
"Embrace the natural character of your space by layering authentic details, for example a rustic stone wall, charming beams, or a set of traditional fire tools. These elements will add depth to your living space while infusing it with characterful charm.
Whether opting for a stove with in-built log storage or a basket on the side, these finishing touches will help to create a cohesive living space alongside allowing you to maximise the inherent features of your property.
For modern homes lacking in character, homeowners can look to recreate the look by opting for a traditional log burner and pairing this with characterful wooden flooring, exposed stone or brick walls and a cosy armchair that offers a lived-in feel."

Care in thr Community
LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE
The
Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance Charity is gearing up to save more lives than ever with the addition of a second helicopter.
The charity, which saves lives across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire has secured a spot on the production line in Italy for a new helicopter at a cost of around £7m. LNAA currently operates with one helicopter, its iconic yellow AW169. But as mission numbers rise, the doctors, paramedics and pilots who respond to an average of four missions a day, know that there are patients they can’t currently get to.
Medical Director Dr Gareth Davies said: “We want to bring our skill and experience to the side of more patients, more quickly, and across a wider area. A second aircraft is a game-changer for these patients and for us as we expand what we can do to meet the needs of the communities that we serve.”
The charity is completely funded by donations and the project has taken flight thanks to initial fundraising efforts which have raised £4m.
The Michael Cornish Charitable Trust and BNA Charitable Incorporated Organisation have each given £1m towards the second helicopter. The Jones 1986 Charitable Trust and Nottingham based company Experian have also made generous contributions to the project, along with LNAA contributing thanks to its fundraising efforts.
Michael Cornish said: “Our charitable trust has existed to help charities who have a
tangible, positive impact on communities, including saving lives. LNAA does this 365 days of the year, across a vast area, so it fits entirely with our vision. We are excited to be part of something that will unquestionably help to save lives.”
A spokesperson for BNA said: “BNA have been a major contributor over the years and are pleased to have generously donated to this important strengthening of LNAA’s cover of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.”
A spokesperson for The Jones 1986 Charitable Trust said: “The Trust has been a major supporter of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance over the years because we know how important the charity is in being able to deliver life-saving care on the scene. We're pleased that we have been able to make a sizeable donation to help ensure that LNAA can get to more patients across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire”.
The plan for a second helicopter emerged after data gathered by the charity showed there are people in need who the service cannot get to with just one aircraft. In the last five years, the charity has seen a 135 percent increase in mission numbers and recent data has shown that there’s an average of 1.4 missions every day the crews are not able to currently respond to. The second helicopter will be an AW109 Grand New model and is scheduled to land at the charity in summer 2027 with a view to being fully operational by autumn that year.
LNAA’s CEO Karen Jobling said: “We are absolutely delighted to share this incredible news with our supporters. The addition of a second helicopter means that we will be able to attend more emergencies, more quickly, and provide critical care to more patients who might not otherwise have access in time. This is truly a life-changing development for the communities we are here to serve.
“Every life we save is a thanks to the people who support LNAA. The second helicopter will belong to everyone who has ever donated, fundraised, or supported us in any way. It will save many more lives, and we could not achieve this without them.”
Dementia Care
DURING
HOT WEATHER
Keeping hydrated
Due to communication difficulties a person with dementia may not be able to explain that they are dehydrated or feeling unwell because of the heat. It may also be harder for families to monitor for signs of heatstroke and dehydration and remind the person with dementia of the importance of drinking. If you are living apart from a relative, you could consider using technology, such as alerts on smart devices, which can remind a person that they need to drink throughout the day. Some medication can be affected by a person’s dehydration and this may lead to a drop in blood pressure. This can lead to falls or fainting. You can avoid this by keeping track of when the person with dementia takes their medication. Sticking to the same schedule every day and ensuring the medication is taken with water is advisable.
Staying cool with appropriate clothing
Sometimes a person with dementia may get confused with what clothing to wear during the heat. They may wear fleeces, thick coats or jackets instead of cool and loose fitting
If you’re caring for a loved one living with dementia, we’ve listed some ways you can help them keep safe when the temperatures start to rise For
clothing. In situations like this, you can look at buying a similar style of clothing made out of a much thinner natural fabric. If you live with the person, put out a clean set of cool clothing every day in the morning so they know what to wear.
Caring for someone near or at a distance
If you know a family living with dementia, you can contact them and ask if there is anything they need to keep cool in the heat. They may be unable to visit supermarkets for items to cool down.
Similarly if you know someone with dementia who is living on their own and far away from you, try and arrange for friends, neighbours or relatives to provide extra checks on them. They might also be willing to do supply runs for items like fans and light-coloured curtains to reflect the heat. These items can help people with dementia and the wider family keep cool throughout the day, reducing the risk of overheating and sweating.

Hollygate Memorial woodlands
A.M. Buckingham Independent Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services.
Since then, they have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance their service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas. We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest.
We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.
We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and
spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.
There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.
There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family
plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites.
Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.
Please feel free to contact any of our offices below for more information.

Natural burial grounds in the UK are an increasingly popular choice for those seeking an environmentally friendly and more personal alternative to traditional burial methods
These burial grounds are often set in natural landscapes, such as woodlands, meadows, or fields, and offer a simpler, more eco-conscious approach to death care. Below are some of the key advantages of choosing a natural burial ground.
Environmental Benefits
One of the most significant advantages of natural burial grounds is their minimal environmental impact. Unlike traditional cemeteries, which often involve embalming chemicals, concrete vaults, and non-biodegradable caskets, natural burials use biodegradable materials like wood, wicker, or cardboard for coffins. This allows the body to decompose naturally and return to the earth. This method avoids the long-lasting environmental damage caused by embalming fluids and helps conserve land by creating green spaces that are often used for conservation or habitat restoration.
Aesthetic and
Peaceful Setting
Natural burial grounds are typically located in serene and beautiful locations, such as forests, meadows, or wildflower meadows. These peaceful and tranquil settings can provide comfort and solace to the grieving families. The natural surroundings offer a unique and calming experience, promoting a sense of connection to nature. For many, the idea of resting in
a place where wildlife thrives and where the landscape is maintained with care is a meaningful and spiritual choice.
Lower Carbon Footprint
Natural burials generate a smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional burials. This is due to the use of eco-friendly materials, the absence of cremation (which can produce harmful emissions), and the preservation of natural landscapes. Choosing a natural burial helps reduce the environmental harm associated with traditional burial practices and cremation, which can be energy-intensive.
Personal and Meaningful Memorials
In natural burial grounds, gravestones are often replaced with more natural markers, such as trees, shrubs, or wildflowers. These living memorials can serve as a lasting tribute while also contributing to the local ecosystem. Families can often plant a tree or wildflowers to mark a loved one's grave, allowing them to create a unique, personal memorial that reflects the individual’s life and values.
Cost-Effective
In many cases, natural burials can be less expensive than traditional burials. The lack of costly caskets, embalming services, and grave markers can make
natural burials a more affordable option. Moreover, many natural burial grounds are not governed by the same regulations as conventional cemeteries, which often leads to lower maintenance costs and fees.
In summary, natural burial grounds in the UK offer a number of advantages, including environmental sustainability, aesthetic beauty, personal meaning, and affordability.
As more people seek eco-friendly and personalized options for their end-of-life plans, natural burial grounds are becoming an increasingly appealing choice
TITHE GREEN NATURAL BURIAL
Tithe Green natural burial sites are humming with life: trees sway in the breeze, bees carry pollen from wildflower to wildflower. We take great care of these beautiful, biodiverse spaces.
Natural burial means being buried in a natural environment like a woodland or wildflower meadow, instead of a graveyard or cemetery, using only natural materials: no plastic, concrete or chemicals. It’s a green way to become part of nature when we die, making a positive impact on the environment. Our natural burial sites are uplifting places to visit, buzzing with nature and wildlife all year round.
The team behind Tithe Green is small,
friendly and professional, we’re driven by our love for nature, respect for people, and passion for this beautiful, green way of leaving the earth. A big part of our day-to-day is welcoming visitors to Tithe Green, whether they’re coming to say hello to someone special who’s buried here, or just checking it out for the first time. We’re open all day, everyday.
We currently have three sites, all in the East Midlands, and we’ll be opening more around the UK in time. Our locations are of course convenient for those living nearby, but people visit Tithe Green from all over the countrywe don’t have a catchment policy, you can be based anywhere.
Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.
A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the
buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.
The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.
The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.
Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
Act Now Age Better
Getting older is a privilege, but one that can come with many challenges. While we can’t prevent ageing, we can take action earlier on in life to help us to age in the best way possible.
Thinking of the word ‘ageing’ and your mind may conjure up images of frailty, walking sticks, or perhaps a well-used armchair. These kinds of pervasive stereotypes mean that, as a society, we’re often reluctant to talk about ageing – particularly in relation to ourselves. This can stop us from preparing fully for our later life and giving ourselves the best chance of ageing in good health.
At Age UK, we’re committed to transforming public attitudes to ageing and starting a national conversation about what it means to get older. That’s why we’ve launched Act Now, Age Better – and we’re kicking off our campaign by talking about staying active.
We’re living longer, and with the right choices, we can also live better
Lots of us are living longer than ever before, with the average life expectancy in the UK now standing at 78.8 years for males and 87.8 years for females. However, many people in the UK spend the later years of their life in
poor health. Of course, not all illness is avoidable – but it may be possible to reduce the risk of health problems by taking earlier action. While genetics influence how we age, our daily habits also play a crucial role.
One in six deaths in the UK is linked to physical inactivity. That’s why making movement a part of our daily lives is so important. It’s not always easy: finding time for fitness in busy schedules is a challenge – particularly for those in mid-life who may be balancing the demands of work, children and older parents.
But staying active now increases the chances of living the life we want later. It’s an investment in the future – a bit like paying into a physical pension plan. And through our campaign, we want to share simple, effective ways to move more that can work for modern life.
Speaking about his motivation to support the campaign, Dr Hussain said: “10 years ago, I was 26kg heavier, sedentary, highly stressed, and diagnosed with fatty liver disease and high blood pressure. The turning point came when I realised how much my lifestyle was shaping my future –
what kind of life would I have at 70 if I continued on that path?”
Having formed habits that have helped him prioritise physical activity in his own life, Dr Hussain has worked with Age UK to create a free, downloadable leaflet. “I’ve summarised the evidence behind longevity and shared practical strategies to help you train for your 70-year-old self,” he says.
Listening to the voices of experience
Our campaign wouldn’t be complete without hearing from those who’ve already reached later life. So we’re also sharing ideas and inspiration from people who’re in their 70s, 80s and beyond.
Like June, who takes a pragmatic approach to staying active, saying she does it “whenever the opportunity takes – it doesn’t have to be formal.”
Trevor enjoys weekly line-dancing and karate sessions – a great way to stay active and keep up social connections, which research shows can influence how well we age. “The next morning things ache, but it’s a good ache! The trick is to do things within your ability,” he says.
Movement works wonders
Movement is our secret weapon to staying strong. Building fitness, strength and balance now can act as a buffer against ageing, helping us stay independent for longer. It can give us:
• A sharper mind: regular movement can cut dementia risk.
• A stronger heart: regular exercise lowers cardiovascular disease risk.
• Better balance, with fewer falls: regular movement reduces fall risk.
• A healthier metabolism: staying active reduces your risk of type 2 diabetes.
Being active needn’t feel like a chore nor a challenge. Small changes can make a big difference, and the main thing is to be consistent.
Home is the perfect place to get active
We’re delighted that our partner Dunelm have come on board to support the Act Now, Age Better campaign, by showing that home is the perfect place to start getting active. Visit your local store to see the campaign in action. You don’t need a fancy gym membership, or even any equipment to get moving. Focusing on what’s known as ‘functional fitness’ means you can build strength, flexibility, balance and coordination, all by opting for full-body moves that help you do day-today activities.
That might look like pushups against the wall to build strength, squats while
you’re waiting for the kettle to boil to help you stay flexible through your hips, or standing on one leg in front of the TV during the ad breaks to increase balance.
It’s never too late to start
It can feel daunting to begin a new habit, but the incredible benefits of physical activity during the ageing process mean there’s never been a better time to start moving more than right now.
“Every step, pedal stroke, paddle, dance move, and even bit of housework counts towards a healthier, stronger future,” says Dr Hussain. “Let’s shift the mindset from exercise as obligation to movement as empowerment. Let’s change how we age.”
