LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
November, 2022
This spring, I was selected by my Sisters to serve as the Provincial President, and I look forward to four years of serving the community in this new capacity. For the past five years I served on the Leadership Team alongside Sr. Joy Connealy and Sr. Margaret Hickey and saw firsthand what the Provincial President was responsible for.
As I reflect on this call, I turn to Jesus, who models for us a way of leadership as service. He often said, “I came not to be served but to serve” – to serve in essence is to be attentive to others. What kind of spirit does it take to be a servant leader? For me the words of Micah describe very well that spirit – to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with God.
This past year was one of many changes, and getting back to a new normal after the pandemic restrictions loosened. The Sisters raised enough funds to reach our financial goals, support our ministries, purchase a wheelchair accessible van, refurbish our meeting space in the old choir loft, and get the block-long retaining wall replaced on our historic property. These projects and ministries were made possible, thanks to dedicated partners and donors who still see our work as impactful in the community.
Another change we saw this year was the creation of a new directional statement (read the full statement on page 12). We 30 Sisters will strive to deepen our spirituality, promote solidarity and justice, and fulfill our mission as a Province, developing ways to sustain our work.
Yes, we are certainly living in interesting, chaotic, and challenging times. Sometimes it can feel distressing and overwhelming. One day as I was reading in the LCWR Reflection booklet Creating Space for the Future, I came across a few lines from Howard Thurman’s poem “I Will Sing a New Song.”
“The old song of my spirit has wearied itself out. I must learn the new song for the new needs. I must fashion new words born of the new growth of my life
– of my mind – of my spirit I shall rejoice in each new day and delight my spirit in each fresh unfolding.”
That call reminds me to learn the new song for the needs of the world, just as all of us Notre Dame Sisters continue to meet unmet needs in many ways. The song reflects not only a new world, but also our renewed commitment to service, our new Leadership Team, and many new projects ahead.
Enjoy reading about our accomplishments from this past year and join us in prayer to have a successful 2022-2023 fiscal year.
Sincerely,
SR. RITA OSTRY, ND Provincial President

ADVANCING THE MISSION
We are grateful for your assistance in improving the daily lives of the Sisters. You gave us more accessibility for us while we age, supported our Celebration of Spirit, and purchased gifts for us through our Wish List while contributing to us financially.
ACCESSIBILITY We were able to purchase a 2014 Toyota Sienna wheelchair van with the funds from “Raise the Paddle” at the Celebration of Spirit. This is perfect for transporting multiple Sisters to appointments. The choir loft now has new seating and a large TV to have Zoom gatherings.
GIVING DAYS Do Good
Week from SHARE Omaha, Joy of Giving Day from the Omaha Archdiocese, and Giving Tuesday are occasions when people are encouraged to give to their favorite nonprofits. We were grateful to raise $14,000 for the Sisters and received more than 150 items from our Amazon Wish List!
CELEBRATION OF SPIRIT
We hosted our annual event in person for the first time since 2019. We enjoyed dinner at Happy Hollow Club and auctioned 126 items, raising $184,000 in total from the event. We thank our generous sponsors and donors for the success of this event.

Bill Cutler stands at the podium next to his wife Susan to accept the Mother Qualberta Service Award. The Sisters recognized the Cutlers for their dedication to the community through their funeral homes and their philanthropy over the decades.
2020-2021 FINANCIALS
We were blessed to reach $1.9 million in revenue between July 1, 2021 and June 20, 2022.
The revenue comes from a variety of sources, such as salaries from our employed Sisters and Social Security and retirement benefits of those that have retired, along with donations and charitable contributions from individuals.
Giving from donors remains strong. Legacy gifts have also been impactful. One legacy gift we received this past year was designated to provide scholarships to local grade schools and high schools and working mothers seeking college degees as educating others has always been a priority for us.
Medical and living expenses consistently continue to be our largest expenses for the past few years. As anticipated, salaries continue to decrease and medical and living expenses continue to increase as the Sisters age.

MISSION MINISTRIES
We are a group Sisters involved in a wide range of service ministries. Guiding our areas of service is our mission “to meet unmet needs.” This translates into work, including supporting senior housing, eliminating family violence, and supporting women and families.
Clockwise: Residents enjoy a fruitful fishing trip, a farmer’s market comes to NDH, residents gather for a group photo for their yearbook, the full NDH campus, Sr. Marie Alice Ostry, ND, keeps in touch with Safe Homes clients to offer support in the Keeping On program, Sr. Celeste Wobeter, ND works with caseworkers to get clients into safe housing.
PAGE 6 NOTRE DAME SISTERS
Our Motherhouse in Florence has served many purposes and met many needs since it was purchased over a 100 years ago. It has transformed and grown over the past 25 years and will continue to grow and change to serve the modern needs of seniors.
NOTRE DAME HOUSING (NDH) began celebrating its 25-year milestone in 2022. NDH maintains a commitment to respond to the senior housing crisis, isolation, and food insecurity. Overall success for the community comes when people are able to age in place. As NDH reached its 25 year milestone, the mission remains the same as the programming, support, and offerings to local seniors continues to grow. There is nothing like NDH in Omaha as it is the ONLY senior living facility with:
• a Service Coordinator
• a Life Enrichment Coordinator
• a public senior center, all on the same campus
NDH currently houses 107 apartment units consistently occupied by more than 125 people.
More than 400 programs were offered in the senior center last year from live music, to live animals, to potlucks. Some events included a Superbowl party, Dress Up Your Pet Day, and trips to go fishing, the circus, the Sistine Chapel exhibit, and so much more.
Staff and volunteers distributed 68,000 pounds of food through the food pantry to anyone who needs it, regardless of age or income. That was an increase of 27,000 pounds from the last year and NDH has plans to increase that number next year.
NDH also added a salon in the building so residents could have access to hair care every week without needing to arrange transportation.
WOMEN IN THE OMAHA METRO AREA have a sense of secutiry when they leave a domestic violence shelter, thanks to Safe Homes. This ministry addresses the need for a safe place so that a woman can rebuild her home life and take steps to start her future and leave abuse in her past. The social workers we work with from local agencies all agree that financial stability after escaping domestic violence is the difference-maker between staying independent and going back to an abuser.
Last year, Safe Homes served more than 100 women and 147 chldren with rental or utilities assistance.
“When someone’s leaving an abusive relationship, they are stripped of pretty much everything. They don’t have the skill set, a lot of times, the financial literacy, the credit score, the knowledge about how to get into a place, or even the financial ability to be able to afford a deposit. So it’s really like they’re starting from the beginning,” said Nyawour Paljor, a social worker with Catholic Charities.

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES
Our passions lead us into many needed areas. Here are some subjects we focus on:
PROVIDING HOMELESS PEOPLE ESSENTIALS
In conjunction with National Health Week and Charles Drew Health Center Summer Project, Sr. Stephanie Matcha joined Sandra Pinkney, a Charles Drew Community Health Worker, and her family in collecting items and putting together over 400 backpacks filled with personal and medical items. The backpack items will not only be helpful for their daily personal needs but also to show that they are not forgotten. The backpacks will be distributed to the homeless living on the streets, under bridges around the Siena Francis House Homeless Shelter and the Stephen Center.
IXIM CONNECTS OMAHA WITH GUATEMALA
Sr. Mary Kay Meagher has been working with this group since 2003. Ixim, Mayan for “Corn,” is an archdiocesan ministry cultivating relationships of friendship, faith, and solidarity between the Archdiocese of Omaha and the Diocese of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Ixim began in 2002 in response to Pope St. John Paul II’s call for dioceses in developed nations to form relationships in solidarity with dioceses in the developing world. You can read more about her work and see a video at notredamesisters.org/news.
TEACHING ENGLISH
Sr. Cynthia Hruby, Sr. Mary Kay Meagher, and Sr. Joyce Ann Rezac teach basic English to prepare people for the citizenship test or their GED. “Currently my students in the small classes are enrolled through Catholic Charities,” Sr. Cynthia said. “These students are also in the Citizenship classes, so my role is to keep in mind inclusion of citizenship type content.”

Right: Sister Fabiola and other Sisters from Piešťany take care of 13 Ukrainian refugees in the building next to their house.
SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE
AFTER TWO FLASH FUNDRAISERS,
the Sisters raised $30,000 for the Notre Dame Sisters on the Ukrainian border and for Catholic Relief Services working with Ukrainian refugees. The Sisters were honored that friends, family, and supporters heard the call for help and were incredibly generous.
The war in Ukraine began in late February of 2022, and within two weeks, Sisters were reaching out for funds to support Catholic Relief Services, while they learned more about what the European Notre Dame Sisters needed and how they were helping Ukrainians.
Weeks later, the Sisters raised funds to support work in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany. Here are some highlights:
● The Sisters in the Czech Republic are housing refugees from Ukraine. On the feast of St. Joseph they had a special Mass. The refugees prepared their specialty foods and a concert, “Light for Ukraine,” was held in the chapel of the Sisters.
● In Slovakia, which is on the border of Ukraine, Sisters take care of 13 refugees in a house next to their convent and welcome refugees crossing into Slovakia, offering information on local services.
● Sisters in small towns helped provide food and clothing for the refugees.
● Others are donating weeks at a time working at the Ukrainian border with volunteers.
The work continues as the situation in Ukraine remains unstable. We look forward to more updates about our Sisters’ work to support Ukrainians with the help of these generous donations.

YEAR IN REVIEW
JULY 1 2020-JUNE 30, 2021
DIRECTIONAL STATEMENT
THROUGH OUR PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLY WE NOTRE DAME SISTERS create a directional statement that guides our ministry and prayer over the next four years. Grounded in the Gospel message of Jesus and grateful for God’s abundant empowering grace, we, the Notre Dame Sisters of Omaha, humbly and joyfully commit our lives and resources to:
•Deepen a contemplative spirituality that shapes our values and decisions
•Promote solidarity and justice for all, especially the marginalized and neglected
•Fulfill our history as a province with active and bold openness to God’s call in our lives
We do this by:
•Practicing prayerful discernment individually and as a province
•Fostering participative partnerships with others to transform systems of injustice
•Developing ways to sustain and celebrate our vision, mission, and legacy
MEMORIAL MASS
THOSE IN OUR MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION were honored at our Memorial Mass in November. Each week, we pray for hundreds of people who have died and commemorate them annually.
ALUMNAE REUNION
WE HAD A GREAT TIME with our alumnae at our reunion, which was the first gathering we had on campus since the pandemic. We celebrated safely outdoors, and honored the class of 1971. We love all of the life updates people mailed in and shared in person.

2021 JUBILARIANS
Five Notre Dame Sisters with 320 years of religious service between them, celebrated Jubilees in 2021: Sr. Margaret Hickey, Notre Dame Sisters Provincial President is celebrating 60 years along with Sr Irene Dvorak, ND, and Sr Corona Humpal, ND. Sr. Ernestine Havlovic, ND, and Sr Joan Polak, ND, celebrated 70 years.
Sr. Ernestine Havlovic, ND, has been a beloved teacher at nine schools and a principal at five schools across three states -- that’s 51 years of teaching and 31 years as a principal. Two incredible achievements were her tenures from 1978-1994 as principal and teacher at Blessed John Neumann, Clarkson, Nebraska, and from 1994-2002 as a teacher at St. John Nepomucene, Weston, Nebraska.
While Sr. Joan Polak, ND, was born in Brainard, Nebraska, she traveled far from the Midwest, making her Central and South American ministries some of the most impactful in her life. Her first international mission was in Chile, South America, from 1963 to 1967 and then she served in Honduras from 1994 to 2005. In between she worked diligently as a social worker with the Douglas County welfare department from 1969 until 1982 and from 1982 to 1991 with the Nebraska Department of Social Services.
Sr. Irene Dvorak, ND, spent more than 25 years teaching in Omaha and Iowa. She then embarked on a career path in religious education at St. Philip Neri in Omaha and St. Rose of Lima Parish in Genoa, Nebraska and taught CCD at St Patrick’s in Elkhorn. Sr. Irene also worked as a consultant with a religious textbook company. She traveled across the Midwest for more than 20 years teaching religious educators how to get the most out of the textbooks and keep students engaged.
Many people know Sr. Margaret Hickey, ND, as a teacher (although they may remember her as Sr. Phyllis), as her education legacy stretches across Omaha -- Beginning at St. Theresa’s in Omaha in 1963, she spent a few years at St. Michael’s in Harlan, Iowa, before returning to Omaha to
teach at Notre Dame Academy, where she had attended high school. She then taught at Roncalli High School in the 70s, 80s, and early 2000s. Sr. Margaret served as Notre Dame Sisters Provincial President an impressive three times -- 1977-1983, 1998-2005, and from 2013-2022.
Sr. Corona Humpal, ND, spent 30 years from 19631993 in education: she started teaching with seventh graders at St. Adalbert’s Grade Schools in Omaha before moving to teach at Howell’s Grade School. She then taught at St. Wenceslaus Grade School, Spillville, Iowa before becoming a high school Math teacher at Notre Dame Academy, Wahoo Neumann High School, and Roncalli Catholic High School.

DONATIONS WITH A HUGE IMPACT
SISTERS HAVE A NEW OPPORTUNITY TO CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION LEGACY thanks to the generous gift of a donor. A long-term supporter and donor gave a gift from their estate, directing that the funds be used for education. Because most of the Sisters are retired educators, they came up with the idea of establishing a scholarship fund to meet various education needs in the area. Children, families and single men and women will benefit from this scholarship over the next several years.
FUNDED THROUGH LAST YEAR’S APPEALS the choir loft and the retaining wall have been refurbished. We finished making improvements to the choir loft, so Sisters can gather comfortably in the loft, and via Zoom on a new, large teleconference screen. This will help keep us all connected, near and far.
We also finished replacing the retaining wall on the West side of the campus, which was a large endeavor. This wall was nearly a city block long. This replacement will last us decades while keeping the soil in place and improving the beauty of this historic campus.
IN A TRULY UNIQUE SITUATION one donor requested that the Sisters each receive a gift of $100 to donate to the organization of their choosing, no questions asked. The Sisters were elated to have this opportunity to contribute financially to the causes that mean the most to them.
“I chose to give it to Jimmy and his family. Jimmy is a single parent Father who is on a fixed disability income,” said one sister. “Jimmy has two teenage daughters who are 17 and 18 years of age. Within the last 6 months they both gave birth to daughters. One daughter is 3 months old and one daughter is 6 months old. Since the girls
are finishing high school Jimmy is the daytime babysitter. They were grateful for the $100.00 which is much needed to provide food, diapers, baby formula and bus tickets to school.”
Another Sister donated her $100 to a school where she used to teach.
“They have a fund which is used to provide an education to students who cannot afford the tuition, I prayed about it for several days and contacted the principal. I was excited, knowing that the donation would benefit some boy or girl who otherwise would not receive a Catholic education.”

NDS Associates Commitment Ceremony
2021
STAR SUPPORTER
For decades Bill and Susan Cutler have been integral parts of their communities in Council Bluffs (where they were both raised) and Omaha. Their record of service goes on for pages, and they would be the last people to list them.
“Few people know of their generosity. One of things they do is quietly provide gifts for people and nonprofits, but always with humility,” said Fr. Don Shane who has known Bill and Susan for more than 25 years, and worked with Bill preparing funeral services for local families.
Still, both Bill and Susan have been honored and noticed for their great contributions over the years. Bill is CEO and chairman of Heafey Hoffman Dworak and Cutler Mortuaries in Omaha, NE and Cutler O’Neill Meyer Woodring Funeral Home in Council Bluffs, IA, as well as the Walnut Hill, Cedar Lawn, Memorial Park and Ridgewood Cemeteries in Council Bluffs. He was inducted into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame in 2015.
Susan Cutler (formerly Susan Eakin) was born and raised in Council Bluffs. She is a 1966 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School where she met Bill. Susan graduated in 1970 from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Following graduation, she taught 3rd grade at Hoover Elementary in Council Bluffs until her daughter Jeanie was born.
They have been married for 52 years and have three children and seven grandchildren. They made the big move from Council Bluffs to Omaha in 1987.
The children remember their parents as being hard workers throughout their lives.
“My dad was put on this earth to be a funeral director,” said Bill Cutler IV. “When he was growing up in Council Bluffs, his school was a block away from our funeral home. When he walked to and from school he wanted to stop there, but his father wouldn’t allow it.”
All of his children have helped out at the home
over the years, making this a true family ministry of compassion. And while Bill was a role model at work, he said he hoped his children looked to their mother and followed her example.
“She is a great example of faithful giving, and a role model of doing the right thing,” Bill said. She currently serves on the board of directors for the Methodist Hospital Foundation, University of Nebraska Medical Center Healing Arts Advisory Committee, and the Archbishop’s Committee for Development. She is a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem Northern Lieutenancy.
“I was always inspired by my dad’s understated optimism. Couple that with my mom’s faith and trust in God that you always are where you are meant to be. She taught us to walk by faith and not by sight,” said their daughter Jackie Conway.
“My parents have always been givers and do things for others,” said their daughter Jeanie Jones. “My father serves others every single day through his work and my mother serves the community through her volunteerism and philanthropic work. My parents are givers beyond measure and that has inspired me to serve my community as well.”
As many people who know them would say, Fr. Shane said it best, “My life is better having Bill and his family as friends.”

A PRAYER TO RELIEVE ANXIETY DURING TOUGH TIMES
FROM SR. MARGARET HICKEY, ND
I LEARNED ABOUT THE PRAYER TO MARY, THE UNDOER OF KNOTS, DURING ONE OF MY VISITS TO EUROPE. I HAVE A RIBBON INTO WHICH I HAVE TIED KNOTS REPRESENTING THOSE SITUATIONS THAT GIVE ME ANXIETY AND FEAR. AND I RECITE THIS PRAYER:
Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for us. Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of all in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exist in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon us and our world and see the snarl of knots that exists in our lives. We are desperate for peace and equity and so many knots bind us.
Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in our lives, we entrust into your hands the ribbons of our lives. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone.
Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and our Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today these knots.
[MENTION YOUR REQUEST HERE AND THE REQUESTS OF OUR WORLD.]
I beg you to undo them for the glory of God, once for all.
You are our hope. O our Lady, the fortification of our feeble strength, the enrichment of our destitution, and, with Christ, the freedom we so desire. Hear our plea. Keep us, guide us protect us, O Safe Refuge! Amen.
MAY OUR UNITED PRAYERS FILL OUR WORLD WITH GREAT PEACE, THE PEACE OF THE RISEN CHRIST.

WAYS TO GIVE
PRAYER OR MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION MATCHING GIFTS
REMEMBER LOVED ONES WITH PRAYER
Honor, in a significant way, a loved one who has died, a friend on a happy occasion, or someone in need of special prayers. You can honor the memory of your family member or friend through the ongoing prayers of the Notre Dame Sisters. In turn, your gift allows you and them to share in our prayer and ministries.
DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT
Many employers offer matching gift programs, matching dollar for dollar, their employees’ charitable contributions. Please check with your Human Resources department today to see if this is an option for you. If so, please complete the form provided by your employer and return it to the Notre Dame Sisters with your gift. We will take it from there!
PLANNED GIVING
A.K.A. LEGACY GIVING
Any major gift, made in lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning enables philanthropic individuals to make larger gifts to the Notre Dame Sisters than they could make from ordinary income. Others use estate and tax planning. These include gifts of equity, life insurance, real estate, personal property, or cash.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE PRAYER ASSOCIATION, MATCHING GIFTS, OR PLANNED GIVING PLEASE CONTACT THE ADVANCEMENT OFFICE AT 402-455-2994 OR EMAIL SANDRA KOCH, VP OF ADVANCEMENT AT SKOCH@NOTREDAMESISTERS.ORG.
