2060’s

Armistice March, Mount Street, 1918

The Great War touched communities far and wide across Australia and North Sydney was no exception. Around 4000 local men are thought to have enlisted to fight. Of those brave souls, nearly 500 have their names recorded for posterity on the bronze plates displayed on the St Leonards Park cenotaph. The list is not comprehensive, meaning many names are missing from the roll of honour. This image, taken on Mount Street, shows the local procession which marked the signing of the Armistice in November 1918. Taking place along the main shopping street, a band was quickly organised and speeches were made on the steps of the Post Office, which can be seen in the background. Lest we forget this ANZAC Day.

Kristy Wales has lived in North Sydney for two years. Find her celebration cakes at @kristycanbake

My favourite place for coffee is… Celsius Coffee & Dining and I’ll have a Sticky Prana Chai and the Billi’s Eggs. An unbeatable spot right on Kirribilli Wharf, boasting a unique and beautiful dining experience.

The best meal I’ve had in the area was at…Soluna, a new LA inspired hidden gem. I had a delicious kingfish ceviche and a grilled minute steak with curry butter. To drink, I had a Bloody Shiraz Spritz.

If I want to enjoy a cocktail, I’ll go to...RAFI on Mount Street and I’ll order a Hugo Spritz.

My fave bakery in the area… can be found right in my very own kitchen! I bake celebration cakes (lemon tart and carrot cake – yes please!). However, if I’m taking the day off, I’ll head to Bourke St Bakery on Denison Street for any kind of pie.

For a workout I’ll head to… Bang Bang Muay Thai. I’d never tried martial arts before but turns out I love it! It has the best vibe.

The secret spot I love to go to locally is…Taruhachi Bento. Order any of the udon or tempura.

The thing about living in this area I love the most is…how easy it is to stroll to a café in the morning, head to a local reserve for an afternoon swim, then duck into the city for a late-night dessert. We are so lucky.

My ideal day in the area would consist of...starting my morning at the Northside Produce Markets, picking up some beautiful fruit, vegetables and flowers. I’d take my brother’s dog for a walk in the parks surrounding North Sydney Oval and I’d spend the afternoon at Balmoral Beach, finishing the day with some fish and chips by the water.

We proudly acknowledge the Cammeraygal people of the Eora nation as customary owners of the land on which we live, work and share these stories. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and future.
