Damaged Pipes: Repair or Replace? When your pipes decay, become damaged or have tree roots burst through the sides it can be a costly and tedious task to fix. Josh Boesel from Total Relining Solutions answers some common questions about fixing up your drainage problems. Is it worth repairing damaged pipes, or is it better to just replace them? Replacing pipes is a very costly and time-consuming process. Thanks to new technology, a specialist plumber can repair them permanently for a fraction of the cost and often – the outcome is better.

What’s the difference in cost and disturbance to my property? Digging up your drainage system would require extensive digging works and often causes damage to your landscaping and surfaces (concrete, decking, tiles). The job could take several days to weeks and the costs can add up very quickly into the tens of thousands. Whereas pipe relining can typically be completed in one day and needs no heavy machinery and no digging in most cases. At times we may need to dig a small entry hole which will be filled in upon completion. This means the work is much more costeffective and will cause very little disruption to the property.

As she steps back into the world of A Country Practice for her latest role, actor Georgie Parker shares her love for the northside stage that always feels like home

he Ensemble Theatre’s house lights dim and the buzz of the audience starts to settle as actor Georgie Parker waits back stage. She’s been here countless times over the past 20 years, but these moments, just before her cue, never lose their magic. “It’s such a beautiful, exquisite feeling, waiting in the wings before the lights go down,” Georgie tells northsider. “Every play I do at the Ensemble I have that pinch me moment where I can’t quite believe I’m working in a place I always dreamed

of working. I just think “Oh God, I’m so lucky,” and it feels the same every time.” One of Australia’s most recognisable faces - a two-time Gold Logie winner with beloved roles in top-rating TV shows including A Country Practice, All Saints and Home and Away to name but a few - Parker’s performance roots run deep at the Kirribilli theatre. Growing up in St Ives and attending St Ives Public School and Abbotsleigh, she was just 15 when she first set foot inside the Ensemble for her high school work experience. “I loved it so much I became a volunteer usher,” Georgie remembers. “I’d rush down after school on a Tuesday to help and it was a great way for me to see the plays, to observe how good actors maintained a role over a long run. I learnt a lot from that.”

Parker’s latest role at the Ensemble is writer Judy in How to Plot a Hit in Two Days, a sharp and heartfelt new comedy by playwright – and self-professed A Country Practice fanatic - Melanie Tait. Set in the imagined writers’ room of A Country Practice in the 1980s, the play follows five fictional writers creating a script for the show’s most famous storyline, the heartbreaking death of Molly Jones. Packed with creative clashes, big laughs and emotional moments, it offers a peek behind the scenes of one of Australia’s iconic TV dramas. “It’s so interesting experiencing A Country Practice from this different perspective,” says Georgie, who played nurse Lucy Gardiner in the soap for four years. “It’s a lovely world to inhabit but when we read through the script, which is set behind the scenes, I actually forgot I was on the show!”

That early experience left a lasting impression on Parker. “It’s a very special space for me to now work in,” Georgie continues. “There’s nothing like it in Sydney. You’re right there in the middle of the audience, you can see their faces, you can feel them move. It’s a great exercise in concentration and commitment to the work so that you can embrace them but also do that wonderful thing where you include them and ignore them at the same time. I love that constant juggle, it’s so immersive and unique. They’re right there in the play with you.”

“The play is very funny and a beautiful insight into how people come up with big stories. The best comedies have some tragedy in them, they live happily side by side, comedy sneaks in, the audience finds something to give themselves a break. It’s all about that ebb and flow of the story.” An ambassador for the Ensemble, Parker champions the theatre’s commitment to local playwrights and nurturing new talent. “It’s so important when we have such an influx of international productions and content. It can be difficult to get Australian stories and voices into our viewing lives. I encourage anyone to go to the theatre, to support Australian stories and talent.” “As an actor, it’s also so nice to not have to put on an accent,” she adds with a laugh. So after 40 years in the entertainment industry, what would 15-year-old Georgie Parker think if she could see where she is now?

“I’d say you were showing me someone else’s life!” she smiles. “I just wanted to act and when you’re 15 you imagine the impossible life of being an actor. I can’t quite believe I’m now on that stage, in that space working, and not just in the audience looking in.” “The Ensemble is a great reminder that it’s always about you and the audience and the storyline,” Georgie concludes. “You don’t just see the show, you feel the show. I love going back there between other jobs because it’s like putting your feet back on the ground again and getting back to what’s important. r Martine Perkins, owner and senior vet at The Village Vet, which has practices in Pymble and Killara, recently swapped floofy cavoodles, cheeky pugs and cute kittens for giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies and playful sea lions. For ten days, she joined 17 vets from around the world on a once-in-a-lifetime veterinary expedition to the Galápagos Islands, where Martine immersed herself in the region’s extraordinary wildlife and conservation efforts. “It’s home to so many species you simply won’t find anywhere else. To see them in their natural environment was just incredible,” she enthuses. From snorkelling with penguins, rays and sea lions to visiting the Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about breeding programs and Darwin’s wrens, Martine described the experience as both awe-inspiring and professionally rewarding. “I feel so privileged to have been able to visit,” she said. “This place reminds you why you become a vet - to protect and respect the animals we share the planet with.” ●

A unique ecosystem The Galápagos Islands are renowned for their unique and diverse wildlife, which played a crucial role in Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. wain Gardens on Stanhope Road in Killara are a treasured heritage-listed public space, created in the 1960s by Sydney bookseller Arthur Newling ‘Mick’ Swain. When Swain learned that 8.5 acres of bush were set to be developed beside his home, he purchased the land to preserve it. Over the next decade, he turned the area into a series of terraces and pathways using sandstone recovered from Sydney’s Tank Stream, which was beneath his Pitt Street book shop. Swain also planted a collection of exotic trees and shrubs, including the ‘Alma-Elizabeth’ camellia, renowned for its perfume and named in honour of his wife. When he died in 1973, Swain bequeathed the gardens to the National Trust for public use. By 1978, responsibility passed to Ku-ring-gai Council, who continue to care for the site with the help of local volunteers. right, zesty and delicious, this dish says Spring all over! You can use pretty much any combination of seasonal greens depending on what’s available weather-wise (and in budget of course!) I’ve blanched these vegies, which means cooking them in boiling water for a very short time and then straining and cooling them immediately, ideally in iced water. This technique brings out the crispness and the colour of the veg and helps these glorious ingredients really pop with freshness. Charring the lemons also gives an added sweetness to the dressing. • Begin by making the dressing. Start by zesting the lemons while they’re whole and set the zest aside. Cut the lemons in half and heat a frying pan over a medium to high heat. Place the lemon halves in the pan face down and cook them until they begin to char and caramelise. Remove the pan from the heat. • Squeeze the charred lemons into a bowl. Pour in the extra virgin olive oil and half of the lemon zest then whisk vigorously until combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste and set aside. • To make the salad, begin by blanching the asparagus, peas and snow peas in boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove from the hot water and chill immediately in iced water and set aside. • In a large bowl, using your hands gently toss the vegetables and lettuce leaves together with half of the dressing until everything is coated. (Make sure you re-whisk the dressing to emulsify it if it has separated) • Arrange the salad on a large platter, garnish with fresh mint leaves, the remaining lemon zest and goats chèvre. Drizzle over some more dressing, then serve immediately.

rom the bustle of their family kitchens in Vietnam to the leafy streets of Lindfield, Oanh, David, and Nga have built more than a restaurant, they’ve created a home away from home. At Bonjour Vietnam, every dish has a story and every guest is welcomed as an old friend. How did the three of you first meet? Our paths crossed through community and friendship. Over countless shared meals, we realised that Oanh’s gift for hospitality, David’s business sense and family culinary heritage, and Nga’s kitchen mastery could create something bigger than ourselves, a place to feed both the body and the heart.

Oanh grew up in the vibrant coastal city of Da Nang, where food is fresh, lively and always shared with love. She has a natural gift for making every guest feel like they’ve walked into the home of a long-time friend and always remembers faces and favourite dishes. David was born and raised in Hue, a city famous for its refined royal cuisine. As a child, he was always in the kitchen with his mother who is a talented chef. Many of our dishes carry her influence and she supports Nga in the kitchen to ensure the flavours are just right. For David, opening Bonjour Vietnam was also a way to share his mother’s recipes with the world. Nga, also from Hue, is the heart of the kitchen. She learned to cook by her family’s side, perfecting traditional recipes. She knows the feel of fresh herbs, the patience of slow-simmering a broth and the balance of flavours that make Hue cuisine so special.

We’re friends who’ve become like family, united by our shared love for Vietnamese food. What inspired you to start Bonjour Vietnam? For all of us, food is more than just food, it’s a bridge between people, cultures and memories. We wanted to create a space where guests feel the same warmth we grew up with in our family kitchens. For David especially, it was about honouring his mother’s recipes and giving them a home in Sydney. For Oanh and Nga, it was to keep traditions passed down by their families alive while making them welcoming to everyone. What drew you to Lindfield? From the first visit, it felt like home. There’s a warm, close-knit community and we hope to become part of the neighbourhood’s story. How have the locals embraced you? The response to the restaurant has been incredibly moving. People have brought flowers,

written kind reviews and come back again and again, often bringing friends and family. We’ve been told our food reminds them of home, whether that’s Vietnam or their own family kitchen, and there’s no greater compliment than that. Is there a particular kitchen memory that inspires the way you cook today? For David, it’s watching his mum prepare dishes from scratch, the way she would taste, adjust and never compromise on freshness. For Oanh and Nga, it’s the smell of broth simmering in the morning, the sound of laughter and conversation over chopping boards and the family ritual of sitting together to enjoy the meal. These are the memories that shape how we cook today - with care, with patience and with the goal of creating moments worth remembering. l

Newington College’s Lindfield Prep scores big with Special Olympics and co-ed sport milestone

t was a double celebration for Newington Lindfield Preparatory School earlier this year as students marked their annual Mini Special Olympics alongside the official opening of a newly upgraded basketball court, now equipped for netball as the school prepares to welcome girls from 2026. Over the past ten years, the K-6 school’s popular Mini Olympics has raised over $125,000 for Special Olympics Australia to support athletes with intellectual disabilities or autism. Associate Principal Pascal Czerwenka described the event as a calendar highlight. “The Mini Olympics models the importance

of inclusion and enables a deeper understanding of the importance of giving,” he said. “Students have been busily raising funds by doing service tasks, like helping neighbours or selling items they’ve made themselves.” This year saw a fun and energetic mixed basketball game between students and Special Olympics athletes, played on the school’s freshly resurfaced court. The revamped space now features netball rings and extra handball squares to support a wider range of sports and activities. One of the stars of the day was Juliet Liddy, a basketballer who won bronze for Australia at the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin. Juliet hopes to qualify for the 2025 Special Olympics National Games in Melbourne and was delighted to be part of Lindfield Prep’s event. “I love seeing the younger students and playing with them,” she said. l

trong, determined and driven by purpose, North Shore local Brenda Lin is helping people across Australia turn pain into power. As a co-founder of the charity The Survivor Hub, she’s part of a team leading a growing network of survivor-led support groups which give those impacted by sexual assault safe spaces where connection, community and empowerment take centre stage. “In NSW, our organisation is the only organisation that offers peer support or group support that is open to all survivors

and their allies aged 16 and over,” Brenda tells northsider. “As a survivor myself, The Survivor Hub is the place I wish existed when I first needed support. Finding connection with others who can relate is critical to the healing journey.” Brenda’s story is one that shocked the nation. While on an overseas school trip in 2009, the then 15 year old discovered via Facebook that her father Min, mother Lily, younger brothers Henry and Terry, and her aunt Irene, had been murdered in the family’s North Epping home. Brenda was placed in the care of her aunt, Kathy, and uncle, Robert Xie, for two years, before Xie was arrested and charged with the murders. During the trial, Brenda revealed that her uncle had also been sexually abusing her. In 2017, Robert Xie was found guilty and sentenced to five consecutive life terms in prison.

Participants can share as much or as little as they like, with conversations ranging from practical tips for going to court to different therapy options to starting relationships and navigating intimacy after assault. A psychologist and a social worker are on site if their support is needed. The hub’s online forums have also flourished, with members contributing to a private, moderated Facebook group. “People can vent, share wisdom and encourage others,” Brenda explains. “And it’s also anonymous if they want it to be.” Brenda’s tireless work was recognised when she was named the Westfield Local Hero for Chatswood in 2024, an honour voted for by the community, which also secured a $20,000 grant for The Survivor Hub. And in April this year, their first support group on the north shore opened in Chatswood, a location especially close to Brenda’s heart. “I grew up on the north shore and I used to go to Chatswood with my mum every week,” she says. “I love living in this area and being able to bring this service to my local community feels like giving something back.

Out of this unimaginable trauma, Brenda forged a fierce determination to rewrite the way survivors of sexual assault find support to help empower others. In 2021, she connected with her three Survivor Hub co-founders, who all have lived experience of sexual assault, including friend Anna Coutts-Trotter, daughter of Federal Minister Tanya Plibersek. “When the four of us got together, those moments were magical,” Brenda says. “We’re from different backgrounds, have different interests and careers, but we intimately understand each other. When you meet someone else who’s been through it, it’s like a spark. It’s a very powerful connection.” United by a deep understanding of how isolating trauma can be, the four women began building The Survivor Hub as a free community for survivors, by survivors. From the beginning, they focused on creating safe, peer-led meet-ups where people could be seen, heard and believed. Four years on, Brenda and her co-founders have established 15 peer support locations across five states. They have supported over 1,000 survivors to date, including a number in rural areas where wait times for counselling can stretch to six months. Each meet-up is run by trained volunteers who are also survivors. They are supported, trained and mentored to lead with empathy and care. “Many of our volunteers have also been participants,” Brenda says. “They know what it feels like to walk into a room and talk about something so intimate. They’ve lived it and now they’re helping others heal. We’re taking back control and rewriting the story and that’s incredibly empowering.”

The response has been so positive. It’s great to have something ‘over the bridge’ for people that’s accessible and familiar.” Brenda knows first hand how peer support can change lives and has received feedback from others about their experiences too. “One participant emailed us after their first session to say they were so nervous they sat in the car wondering if they should go in,” Brenda recalls. “But as soon as they walked through the door, they felt welcome, safe, included. That’s exactly what we aim to do.” Behind the scenes, Brenda continues to work on furthering the not-for-profit while also finishing her PhD in criminology at the University of Sydney. “We’d love help from anyone who wants to get involved,” she says. “There’s space for everyone whether it’s setting up a new meet up, fundraising or spreading the word about what we do. We need help with flyer drops, baking for meet-ups…so do get in touch! There’s always ways to help.” Despite the emotional toll this work can take, Brenda finds strength in the community she’s helping to build. “I still have bad days,” she says. “But I’ve got a great support network, people who ‘get it’. And when I step

back and see how far we’ve come, the number of people who’ve attended The Survivor Hub, it gives me hope. It makes it all worth it.” When asked what her younger self would say if she could see herself now - a founder, advocate, graduate and PhD candidate Brenda smiles. “I think she’d say, ‘No way is that possible.’ I was sometimes struggling just to get through the day but you can achieve a lot over time with dedication, persistence and the right people around you. I’ve lost my family, but this beautiful community is a family to me.” Looking ahead, Brenda’s dream is to make The Survivor Hub a household name. “I want meet-ups everywhere,” she says. “So that if someone wakes up and needs support, they can find it. No waiting, just sign up and attend a meet up that same day.” And to anyone reading who might be hesitant to seek support, Brenda has a message: “You are courageous. My favourite place for coffee is…The Wyatt in Gordon as it’s so handy and a short walk from our house. I’m generally quite boring and just have a large cappuccino if I’m meeting friends, however, their egg and bacon rolls are hard to resist for a treat on Sundays. The best meal I’ve had in the area was…a birthday dinner at The Jacaranda Restaurant at the Killara Inn on the Pacific Highway. We really enjoyed their Asian fusion menu and inevitably overordered! If I want to have a glass of wine, I go to… The Greengate and I order a pinot gris or a rosé. Their restaurant always has a good vibe whether you’re dining or just drinking. A great place to sit on a sunny afternoon. My go-to local takeaway is…the Mehfil Indian Restaurant on the Highway. We always order lamb saag, butter chicken, narial beef, rogan josh and large amounts of garlic naan – our family favourites by far. My top three fave local gems include…Bakerie in Gordon, delicious pastries and bread that make you

the Sphinx trail at the end of Bobbin Head Road. Parts of it are easy and parts a challenge - which I love, even on a hot afternoon. think you’re visiting France. The Emporium, also in Gordon, two fantastic shops crammed full of exquisite things you don’t find elsewhere. A fabulous shopping oasis and a Gordon gem indeed! On the Clock Killara Plumbing are the best. Brad and his team are local, always willing to come at short notice and are very efficient. Highly recommend. If I’ve got guests in town, I’ll take them to… GyuTei Japanese BBQ in Gordon as it’s always such fun to cook your own food and leads to lots of hearty goodnatured discussions.

My ideal day in the area would consist of…I don’t often have a whole day off but when I do, I love to go to Missing Spoon for lunch for one of their poke bowls - so full of healthy and fresh ingredients. Makes me feel I’m eating well even though the rest of the time I am most definitely not! The secret spot I love to go to locally is…the park by the Gordon tennis courts where there is a circle of trees which was planted early in the last century to emulate a Druid’s grove. It has such a calm and peaceful energy. The things about living in this area I love the most are…I think that Gordon still has a small town feel and a sense of local community despite the growing hubbub of Sydney. I love being surrounded by historic buildings and older style houses and, of course, the jacaranda trees spilling their beautiful purple along our streets in October.
