n Australia, 3300 people die by suicide each year. That’s nine people - seven men and two women - every day. Twenty years ago, John Brogden could have been one of them. In 2005, the then NSW Liberal Party Leader survived a suicide attempt following the sudden implosion of his political career. Today, the north shore local is one of the country’s fiercest advocates for mental health awareness and suicide prevention. “In the past two decades, we’ve seen an extraordinary improvement in public

understanding of mental illness and of suicide,” John tells northsider. “We’ve come a long way and I think we talk about mental illness more openly, and certainly with a lot more compassion. We have to think of mental health in the same way we think of physical health. It’s as normal to have a mental illness as it is to have, say, a heart condition. It’s another physical illness of the body that just happens to be in the brain.” “Suicide remains a very difficult topic to talk about - it probably always will be,” he continues. “But there’s much more awareness of suicide and the importance and the need for suicide prevention. We don’t want to normalise suicide. We don’t want people to take their own life. We want them to stay alive. We want them to get through those dark periods and still be here.” Chair of Lifeline Australia, the nation’s suicide prevention support charity, from

LOCAL LEGENDS 2012 to 2021, Brogden went on to become Chair, and now Honorary President, of the charity’s global arm, Lifeline International. The organisation’s mission is simple and powerful: to listen without judgment, connect with those experiencing personal crisis and empower them to stay alive. “Suicide rates are very stubborn in Australia,” John continues. “They’re not dropping and they’re actually growing among older Australians, older men in particular. At Lifeline, we believe every suicide is preventable with the right sort of support at the right time for somebody who’s in crisis.” Despite growing awareness, many people feel unsure of how to help someone in distress. “It’s not an easy conversation to have,” John admits. “I’m not going to sugarcoat it. But all our research shows the best way to approach someone you’re concerned about is to ask directly ‘Are you suicidal? Do you want to kill yourself?’ For many people that is an incredibly difficult thing to say to somebody, even if they’re a close friend. But what we’ve seen is rather than tiptoe around the subject, people will respond to that direct question.” “You don’t have to be a heart surgeon to help somebody who’s had a heart attack, nor do you have to be a psychiatrist to help somebody who’s suicidal,” he continues. “You take them to an emergency department, you ring Triple 0, you ring Lifeline, you put your phone on speaker, you stay with them. That’s the most important thing. You’ve got to stay with them to get them through. Lifeline is like

a paramedic - we’re there to save your life and get you to treatment.” Brogden reflects candidly on the personal circumstances that led to his lowest point, and the growth that’s followed. “I was extremely ambitious as a young man,” he says, recalling his political rise. Elected to Parliament at 27, he became Leader of the NSW Opposition on his 33rd birthday in 2002, the youngest person ever to lead a major political party in Australia. But in 2005, after making offensive comments in a bar following a function, Brogden’s political career rapidly unravelled. Facing a storm of media attention and personal turmoil, he resigned as party leader, and, soon after, attempted to take his own life. “My career - and back then I believed that my career was everything - was over...I was depressed, disgraced, ashamed and sorry for what I’d done,” John says. “I convinced myself that to kill myself was not just the only thing to do, but the best thing to do. To take away the shame and burden from the people who loved, cared for and supported me. I thank God I survived.” “For me, those achievements were never good enough,” he admits. “I was always focussed on what’s next....my biggest piece of advice to myself back then, and what I try to do now, is to stop to smell the roses. Most things you do in life have stress attached to them. It’s how you handle that stress. And I think part of that is stopping to realise you’re going OK.” “I still have downs from time to time,” John continues. “I’m medicated. I go to counselling once a week, sometimes twice. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll probably live my life with depression and suicidal ideation…particularly when something personal goes wrong or my reputation is challenged, I can go to a very dark place very quickly. But I know

how to recognise that now. You’ve got to learn to live with it, I think it’s very important. I don’t live through it. I think it’s got to be part of you, not all of you.” John now uses his experience as a way to connect with others. “People often come up to me after events or in the street and share their stories and it’s like we share a language,” he says. “I see them open up and I think it instantly allows you to have a more intimate conversation because they know you will understand what they’ve been through.” “They will tell me they’ve called Lifeline,” John continues. “And when I ask them about that, the first thing they all say is ‘they listened.’ In many senses it’s extraordinary that at the darkest point in your life you’d ring a complete stranger. But it’s because you can’t speak to anyone else. And you know you’ll be listened to, anonymously and without judgement.” Lifeline’s 13 11 14 crisis line, along with text and digital services, are available 24/7, answered by highly trained volunteers at over 40 Member Centres across the country. The northside’s local HQ, Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury Sydney (H2HS), is based in Gordon. In addition to the national crisis support services, H2HS co-ordinates new face-to-face Lifeline Connect Hubs each week at Chatswood and Hornsby Libraries, Stanton Library in North Sydney and the Lindfield Hub, situated above the Lifeline Lindfield retail store. Staffed by accredited Crisis Supporters, the Connect Hubs offer free, confidential, accessible face-to-face support for those who are struggling in the community Situated in discreet, safe spaces, Lifeline listens in a non-judgemental and caring way. “We’re lucky to have Lifeline in Australia with over 10,000 volunteers answering more than a million calls and around

“We listen without judgement” Alex is one of the Lifeline Connect Volunteers at Chatswood Library I began volunteering with Lifeline three years ago as a Crisis Supporter on the phone. I’m also a shift supervisor for the call centre and part of the new Lifeline Connect team at Chatswood Library. We run free, weekly drop-in sessions every Monday from 12-4pm, apart from on public holidays. Anyone can come and be listened to in a supportive, non-judgemental environment. Lifeline Connect is face-to-face, but still anonymous, we only use first names, which adds a deeply human layer. We can see body language and expressions and there’s real connection in the room. Because we’re embedded in the local community, we have a strong knowledge of services nearby that can offer help and we have Mandarin and Cantonese speaking volunteers on the team, which makes the service inclusive and accessible. No matter whether the crisis someone is facing is big or small, we listen without judgement and treat them with respect so they feel heard, validated and empowered to find solutions. Volunteering with Lifeline has been life-changing. It’s inspired me to change careers and start a Masters in Counselling and I’ve made lifelong friends all motivated to see an Australia free of suicide. l

“THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE EVEN WHEN YOU FEEL MOST HOPELESS” 100,000 texts every year,” John says. “So many countries don’t have a resource like Lifeline, or they have a very small helpline with limited funding and only a handful of volunteers. And around 40 countries still consider suicide a crime. There are lots of opportunities for Lifeline International to make lasting positive change and prevent suicide all across the world.” At the end of last year, Brogden released Profiles In Hope, a book sharing the lived experiences of 15 people who’ve faced mental health struggles and suicide, ranging from everyday Aussies to world champion surfer Layne Beachley and media mogul James Packer. All royalties from the sale of the book go directly to Lifeline. “I was lucky to interview extraordinary people,” John says. “Some of them are famous, others you’ve never heard of. I really wanted that mix because it doesn’t matter where you come from or how much privilege you have, you can still be suicidal or have mental illness. Stories of hope encourage others to reach out for help, they save lives, because they show that it’s possible to come back from the darkest place. There is always hope even when you feel most hopeless.” “The reality is that with compassion, help, support and love, suicide is largely preventable,” Brogden concludes. “No matter how dark life gets or how hopeless things seem, no human is beyond repair. “The anonymity of texting is powerful” Sonny is a Digital Crisis Support Volunteer for Lifeline’s Text and Online Chat Service In early 2021, I lost a close friend to suicide. A few months later, I took part in the Push-Up Challenge, 3,000 push-ups in a month to honour lives lost. That experience inspired me to want to do more. When I saw Lifeline was recruiting Digital Crisis Support Volunteers, I applied. I was approved in October that same year. I’ve been volunteering ever since. I balance this role with my full-time job, usually doing early morning shifts from 6-10am. All of my interactions are through text messages which are displayed for me on a computer screen. At first, even after all the thorough training, it was very confronting reading messages saying ‘I want to die’ but the more I’ve done this role, the more strength and purpose I’ve found. The anonymity of texting is powerful and people message us from wherever they are – libraries, workplaces, parks - without worrying about being overheard. It often helps them feel more open. It’s an incredible feeling to be able to listen to someone and to help them shift from despair to a place where they feel heard. ●

Blending fierce inclusivity with feel-good anthems, the singing group is an LGBTQIA+ safe space founded by vocal coach and seasoned musical theatre performer, Olivier Christian. “There’s never been anything like this on the North Shore where queer, trans and allied locals can sing their hearts out together,” Ollie says. “You don’t need experience, just a love of singing and a heart for community.” With rehearsals taking place once a week in Crows Nest, the Loud and Proud Choir is

“That film changed everything for me,” he remembers. On leaving school, Ollie headed to the Australian Institute of Music in Surry Hills to study a degree in music, majoring in musical theatre. He followed this with stints at NIDA and the prestigious Stella Adler Academy in LA. A professional career on stage beckoned with successful roles in Kinky Boots, Into the Woods and Opera Australia’s Turandot, before Ollie shifted focus to offer his expertise in vocal and mindset coaching. His clients range from a six-yearold learning the basics to a 70-year-old retiree honing his voice for jazz performances. As well as singing lessons, Ollie also leads one-on-one coaching for those looking to speak more confidently. “It’s about finding your voice and taking it into everything you do,” he says. “There’s so

much fear and apology in how people speak. I coach them through the fear and into their resonance. Damaged Pipes: Repair or Replace? When your pipes decay, become damaged or have tree roots burst through the sides it can be a costly and tedious task to fix. Josh Boesel from Total Relining Solutions answers some common questions about fixing up your drainage problems. Is it worth repairing damaged pipes, or is it better to just replace them? Replacing pipes is a very costly and time-consuming process. Thanks to new technology, a specialist plumber can repair them permanently for a fraction of the cost and often – the outcome is better.

What’s the difference in cost and disturbance to my property? Digging up your drainage system would require extensive digging works and often causes damage to your landscaping and surfaces (concrete, decking, tiles). The job could take several days to weeks and the costs can add up very quickly into the tens of thousands. Whereas pipe relining can typically be completed in one day and needs no heavy machinery and no digging in most cases. At times we may need to dig a small entry hole which will be filled in upon completion. This means the work is much more costeffective and will cause very little disruption to the property.

hristopher Thé knows good cakes. His popular stall at the Northside Produce Market, Hearthe, is an outpost of his artisan cake store of the same name, which he founded in 2023 after selling cult bakery, Black Star Pastry. The creative force behind the Strawberry Watermelon Cake, aka “the world’s most Instagrammed cake”, Thé is now sharing his love for native ingredients in his new book, Modern Australian Baking. “My aim is to show you how native ingredients can become a valuable part of your everyday baking and bring you closer to the food this land has to offer,” he explains. This recipe appears in the book. “Made with almonds and whole boiled oranges, this moist cake does not include the syrup that typically accompanies orange cakes, and instead is frosted with a lemon myrtle icing. A favourite in the shop, it is often chosen over fancier layered cakes. This version is garnished with candied sweet potato (yes, vegetables can be dessert too), which brings a nice earthy crunch. To make the candied sweet potato, you’ll need to start the day before you make the cake.”●

METHOD: • To make the candied sweet potato, combine the sugar and 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) water in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Place the sweet potato slices in the syrup and simmer gently until soft, about 15 minutes. Drain the slices from the syrup. By now, the sweet potato should be quite malleable and able to be wound up into scrolls that resemble ﬂowers. Crumple up pieces of baking paper and use them to hold the rosettes upright on a baking tray. Dehydrate overnight in an oven set to 50˚C (120˚F). If your oven cannot be set this low, use a food dehydrator instead. • For the almond and orange cake, wash the oranges well and place in a pot. Cover with cold water and bring to the boil over a high heat. Turn down to a simmer, place a lid on the pot, slightly ajar, and boil for about 1 hour. The oranges are ready when they can be pierced easily with a knife. Drain the oranges, allow to cool, then puree until smooth. • Measure out 510 g (1 lb 2 oz) of the puree and add it to a large bowl with all the remaining

orange cake ingredients. Mix well until combined. • Preheat the oven to 170˚C (340˚F). • Grease and line a 20 cm (8 in) round cake tin with baking paper. Pour the batter into the tin and smooth flat with a palette knife. Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool. • While the cake is cooling, make the lemon myrtle icing. Combine the white chocolate, cream and brown sugar in a saucepan and stir over a low heat until the chocolate has melted and the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature. Meanwhile, combine the butter, icing sugar and lemon myrtle in a bowl and whip with a hand-held mixer until light, about 5 minutes. Pour in the cooled brown sugar mixture and continue to whip until well combined. • To assemble, apply the icing to the top of the cake and smooth flat with a palette knife. Garnish with candied sweet potato rosettes, extra ground lemon myrtle and edible flowers.

Ted the puggle, northsider’s ‘rover’ reporter, meets Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Daisy, the Art Assistant at Studio A in St Leonards

Ted: Hi Daisy! Tell us about your job. Daisy: I’ve recently become the new Art Assistant at Studio A. I mainly provide cuddles for the artists and staff and have been a model for an artwork or two. I’m also a great lunch inspector and help clean up the kitchen floor. My mum sometimes calls me ‘Hoover’ as I’m so good at cleaning up crumbs! T: How did you get into this line of work? D: My mum adopted me last year and I think we were destined to find each other. She found me wandering alone right outside her house one afternoon. I was covered in fleas and had a couple of nasty lumps and bumps on my head and tummy. That didn’t stop her falling in love with me instantly. When she had no luck finding my owner, I had to go to the pound and foster care for around two months. After all my vet work was done, I was put up for adoption. On the very same day, my mum emailed to enquire about me, as she couldn’t stop

thinking of me! Two days later I went home with her. We were definitely meant to be together and I’ve been helping out at Studio A, where my mum is the Principal Artist, since July this year. T: What do you like best about work? D: I love all the artists and they love me! Everyone is so gentle and I love that they give me cuddles. I make them smile, especially when I’m sleeping and I’m snoring away in my bed in the artroom. They bring treats for me and one staff member gifted me a hand crocheted jumper that I wear as a snood. Sometimes artists take photos of me and I become a source of inspiration for their artworks. I was given a special nickname by Thom Roberts, the famous artist and four-time Archibald finalist, who changes people’s names, including his own. Thom named me “Propellor”, I think it’s a reference to my tail when I’m happy.

T: Where are your fave local dog spots? D: I always go for a walk around the IBM building where Studio A is located when I arrive. My mum and I get coffee together at Charlie and Franks and I’ve visited Eckersleys, the art store in our street, for supplies which was fun. T: What’s your favourite food and why? D: I love ALL food! Particularly ‘people food’! And cat food! I live with a feline sister named Missy, but Mum and me sometimes call her Hissy-Missy. I like to try and steal her food whenever I get the chance. The cat can be a bit of a bully and chases me sometimes, so this is how I get her back. T: I’m sure you’re really good almost all the time, just like me, but what’s the naughtiest thing you’ve done? D: I really am such a very good, exceptionally amazing girl and there are not too many naughty moments I can put to my name. I’m a notorious snorer - it’s not a naughty thing, just something I do. I snore loudest when I’m dreaming and sometimes I am relocated in the middle of the night from the middle of the bed, where I sleep under the covers, back to the couch if my snoring is too loud! I may have done two accidental wee wees in the studio...I’m normally very good and go outside, but Studio A is such a big 360 degree, wide-open space of awesomeness and there are so many smells, that for a dog it can feel a little like being outside...at least they weren’t on any of the artworks! ●

As she steps back into the world of A Country Practice for her latest role, actor Georgie Parker shares her love for the northside stage that always feels like home

he Ensemble Theatre’s house lights dim and the buzz of the audience starts to settle as actor Georgie Parker waits back stage. She’s been here countless times over the past 20 years, but these moments, just before her cue, never lose their magic. “It’s such a beautiful, exquisite feeling, waiting in the wings before the lights go down,” Georgie tells northsider. “Every play I do at the Ensemble I have that pinch me moment where I can’t quite believe I’m working in a place I always dreamed

of working. I just think “Oh God, I’m so lucky,” and it feels the same every time.” One of Australia’s most recognisable faces - a two-time Gold Logie winner with beloved roles in top-rating TV shows including A Country Practice, All Saints and Home and Away to name but a few - Parker’s performance roots run deep at the Kirribilli theatre. Growing up on Sydney’s northside, she was just 15 when she first set foot inside the Ensemble for her high school work experience. “I loved it so much I became a volunteer usher,” Georgie remembers. “I’d rush down after school on a Tuesday to help and it was a great way for me to see the plays, to observe how good actors maintained a role over a long run. I learnt a lot from that.”

Parker’s latest role at the Ensemble is writer Judy in How to Plot a Hit in Two Days, a sharp and heartfelt new comedy by playwright – and self-professed A Country Practice fanatic - Melanie Tait. Set in the imagined writers’ room of A Country Practice in the 1980s, the play follows five fictional writers creating a script for the show’s most famous storyline, the heartbreaking death of Molly Jones. Packed with creative clashes, big laughs and emotional moments, it offers a peek behind the scenes of one of Australia’s iconic TV dramas. “It’s so interesting experiencing A Country Practice from this different perspective,” says Georgie, who played nurse Lucy Gardiner in the soap for four years. “It’s a lovely world to inhabit but when we read through the script, which is set behind the scenes, I actually forgot I was on the show!”

That early experience left a lasting impression on Parker. “It’s a very special space for me to now work in,” Georgie continues. “There’s nothing like it in Sydney. You’re right there in the middle of the audience, you can see their faces, you can feel them move. It’s a great exercise in concentration and commitment to the work so that you can embrace them but also do that wonderful thing where you include them and ignore them at the same time. I love that constant juggle, it’s so immersive and unique. They’re right there in the play with you.”

“The play is very funny and a beautiful insight into how people come up with big stories. The best comedies have some tragedy in them, they live happily side by side, comedy sneaks in, the audience finds something to give themselves a break. It’s all about that ebb and flow of the story.” An ambassador for the Ensemble, Parker champions the theatre’s commitment to local playwrights and nurturing new talent. “It’s so important when we have such an influx of international productions and content. It can be difficult to get Australian stories and voices into our viewing lives. I encourage anyone to go to the theatre, to support Australian stories and talent.” “As an actor, it’s also so nice to not have to put on an accent,” she adds with a laugh. So after 40 years in the entertainment industry, what would 15-year-old Georgie Parker think if she could see where she is now?

“I’d say you were showing me someone else’s life!” she smiles. “I just wanted to act and when you’re 15 you imagine the impossible life of being an actor. I can’t quite believe I’m now on that stage, in that space working, and not just in the audience looking in.” “The Ensemble is a great reminder that it’s always about you and the audience and the storyline,” Georgie concludes. “You don’t just see the show, you feel the show. I love going back there between other jobs because it’s like putting your feet back on the ground again and getting back to what’s important. Friendly staff, cosy atmosphere and the perfect weekend vibe. My top local eats include… Gochiso for authentic Japanese, Braci for pizza, cocktails and other Italian treats, and La Bouitte. I just can’t go past their duck confit! The Rice Den in St Leonards and Enoteca in Neutral Bay are also favourites; the wine list and staff knowledge at Enoteca are exceptional.

If I’ve got guests, we’ll go to…Flat Rock Gully or Tunks Park. I always make sure we stop to take in the beautiful view and the atmosphere

of Tunks Park. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic. My favourite local walk is… Artarmon Reserve and I often head there with a podcast on. Flat Rock Gully is also a regular on my walking circuit. The things about living in this area I love the most include…the close proximity to so many delicious dining options, great parks, excellent walking tracks, and a huge choice of Pilates studios. Everything’s so accessible and public transport makes getting around a breeze.
