Answering THE CALL

Marking World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September and the arrival of new local face-to-face Lifeline Connect Hubs, northsider speaks to Honorary President of Lifeline International, John Brogden, about hope, healing and helping others stay alive This feature discusses suicide. If you or someone you know needs help, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or lifeline.org.au. If someone is in immediate danger, call Triple Zero (000).

n Australia, 3300 people die by suicide each year. That’s nine people - seven men and two women - every day. Twenty years ago, John Brogden could have been one of them. In 2005, the then NSW Liberal Party Leader survived a suicide attempt following the sudden implosion of his political career. Today, the north shore local is one of the country’s fiercest advocates for mental health awareness and suicide prevention. “In the past two decades, we’ve seen an extraordinary improvement in public

“WE HAVE TO THINK OF MENTAL HEALTH IN THE SAME WAY WE THINK OF PHYSICAL HEALTH”

understanding of mental illness and of suicide,” John tells northsider. “We’ve come a long way and I think we talk about mental illness more openly, and certainly with a lot more compassion. We have to think of mental health in the same way we think of physical health. It’s as normal to have a mental illness as it is to have, say, a heart condition. It’s another physical illness of the body that just happens to be in the brain.” “Suicide remains a very difficult topic to talk about - it probably always will be,” he continues. “But there’s much more awareness of suicide and the importance and the need for suicide prevention. We don’t want to normalise suicide. We don’t want people to take their own life. We want them to stay alive. We want them to get through those dark periods and still be here.” Chair of Lifeline Australia, the nation’s suicide prevention support charity, from

LOCAL LEGENDS 2012 to 2021, Brogden went on to become Chair, and now Honorary President, of the charity’s global arm, Lifeline International. The organisation’s mission is simple and powerful: to listen without judgment, connect with those experiencing personal crisis and empower them to stay alive. “Suicide rates are very stubborn in Australia,” John continues. “They’re not dropping and they’re actually growing among older Australians, older men in particular. At Lifeline, we believe every suicide is preventable with the right sort of support at the right time for somebody who’s in crisis.” Despite growing awareness, many people feel unsure of how to help someone in distress. “It’s not an easy conversation to have,” John admits. “I’m not going to sugarcoat it. But all our research shows the best way to approach someone you’re concerned about is to ask directly ‘Are you suicidal? Do you want to kill yourself?’ For many people that is an incredibly difficult thing to say to somebody, even if they’re a close friend. But what we’ve seen is rather than tiptoe around the subject, people will respond to that direct question.” “You don’t have to be a heart surgeon to help somebody who’s had a heart attack, nor do you have to be a psychiatrist to help somebody who’s suicidal,” he continues. “You take them to an emergency department, you ring Triple 0, you ring Lifeline, you put your phone on speaker, you stay with them. That’s the most important thing. You’ve got to stay with them to get them through. Lifeline is like

“LIFELINE IS LIKE A PARAMEDIC - WE’RE THERE TO SAVE YOUR LIFE AND GET YOU TO TREATMENT”

a paramedic - we’re there to save your life and get you to treatment.” Brogden reflects candidly on the personal circumstances that led to his lowest point, and the growth that’s followed. “I was extremely ambitious as a young man,” he says, recalling his political rise. Elected to Parliament at 27, he became Leader of the NSW Opposition on his 33rd birthday in 2002, the youngest person ever to lead a major political party in Australia. But in 2005, after making offensive comments in a bar following a function, Brogden’s political career rapidly unravelled. Facing a storm of media attention and personal turmoil, he resigned as party leader, and, soon after, attempted to take his own life. “My career - and back then I believed that my career was everything - was over...I was depressed, disgraced, ashamed and sorry for what I’d done,” John says. “I convinced myself that to kill myself was not just the only thing to do, but the best thing to do. To take away the shame and burden from the people who loved, cared for and supported me. I thank God I survived.” “For me, those achievements were never good enough,” he admits. “I was always focussed on what’s next....my biggest piece of advice to myself back then, and what I try to do now, is to stop to smell the roses. Most things you do in life have stress attached to them. It’s how you handle that stress. And I think part of that is stopping to realise you’re going OK.” “I still have downs from time to time,” John continues. “I’m medicated. I go to counselling once a week, sometimes twice. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll probably live my life with depression and suicidal ideation…particularly when something personal goes wrong or my reputation is challenged, I can go to a very dark place very quickly. But I know

8

NSIDER27_p6-10_LIFELINE.indd 8

27/8/2025 6:30 pm

how to recognise that now. You’ve got to learn to live with it, I think it’s very important. I don’t live through it. I think it’s got to be part of you, not all of you.” John now uses his experience as a way to connect with others. “People often come up to me after events or in the street and share their stories and it’s like we share a language,” he says. “I see them open up and I think it instantly allows you to have a more intimate conversation because they know you will understand what they’ve been through.” “They will tell me they’ve called Lifeline,” John continues. “And when I ask them about that, the first thing they all say is ‘they listened.’ In many senses it’s extraordinary that at the darkest point in your life you’d ring a complete stranger. But it’s because you can’t speak to anyone else. And you know you’ll be listened to, anonymously and without judgement.” Lifeline’s 13 11 14 crisis line, along with text and digital services, are available 24/7, answered by highly trained volunteers at over 40 Member Centres across the country. The northside’s local HQ, Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury Sydney (H2HS), is based in Gordon. In addition to the national crisis support services, H2HS co-ordinates new face-to-face Lifeline Connect Hubs each week at Chatswood and Hornsby Libraries, Stanton Library in North Sydney and the Lindfield Hub, situated above the Lifeline Lindfield retail store. Staffed by accredited Crisis Supporters, the Connect Hubs offer free, confidential, accessible face-to-face support for those who are struggling in the community Situated in discreet, safe spaces, Lifeline listens in a non-judgemental and caring way. “We’re lucky to have Lifeline in Australia with over 10,000 volunteers answering more than a million calls and around

MEET THE VOLUNTEERS

“We’re here to empower people to speak” Rudi is a Lifeline Connect Volunteer at Stanton Library in North Sydney I first connected with Lifeline in 2013 after losing my youngest brother to suicide. I saw an ad for the organisation and wondered if he’d called them, maybe things would’ve been different. I wanted to help so I enrolled in a Lifeline training course and started out volunteering on the phone lines. Learning to listen to people with empathy and vulnerability changed my life. When I heard about Lifeline Connect, a new service where we meet people face-to-face at Stanton Library, I decided to offer that support too. We’re here to empower people to speak and to make them feel heard. We’re not counsellors and we’re not here to tell people how to live their lives. We listen without judgement and guide people to help that’s available. I volunteer on Tuesdays from 3-7pm at Stanton Library and every shift is different. Sometimes it’s quiet, sometimes there’s a queue, but it’s always deeply rewarding. It’s wonderful when people come back to see us and share how they’re going. Lifeline has taught me what empathy looks like and how powerful it can be to simply listen. I’m very proud to be part of it. l

“THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE EVEN WHEN YOU FEEL MOST HOPELESS” 100,000 texts every year,” John says. “So many countries don’t have a resource like Lifeline, or they have a very small helpline with limited funding and only a handful of volunteers. And around 40 countries still consider suicide a crime. There are lots of opportunities for Lifeline International to make lasting positive change and prevent suicide all across the world.” At the end of last year, Brogden released Profiles In Hope, a book sharing the lived experiences of 15 people who’ve faced mental health struggles and suicide, ranging from everyday Aussies to world champion surfer Layne Beachley and media mogul James Packer. All royalties from the sale of the book go directly to Lifeline. “I was lucky to interview extraordinary people,” John says. “Some of them are famous, others you’ve never heard of. I really wanted that mix because it doesn’t matter where you come from or how much privilege you have, you can still be suicidal or have mental illness. Stories of hope encourage others to reach out for help, they save lives, because they show that it’s possible to come back from the darkest place. There is always hope even when you feel most hopeless.” “The reality is that with compassion, help, support and love, suicide is largely preventable,” Brogden concludes. “No matter how dark life gets or how hopeless things seem, no human is beyond repair. There’s always a way back.” ● Profiles in Hope by John Brogden, Hachette, is available at all good bookshops.

“The anonymity of texting is powerful” Sonny is a Digital Crisis Support Volunteer for Lifeline’s Text and Online Chat Service In early 2021, I lost a close friend to suicide. A few months later, I took part in the Push-Up Challenge, 3,000 push-ups in a month to honour lives lost. That experience inspired me to want to do more. When I saw Lifeline was recruiting Digital Crisis Support Volunteers, I applied. I was approved in October that same year. I’ve been volunteering ever since. I balance this role with my full-time job, usually doing early morning shifts from 6-10am. All of my interactions are through text messages which are displayed for me on a computer screen. At first, even after all the thorough training, it was very confronting reading messages saying ‘I want to die’ but the more I’ve done this role, the more strength and purpose I’ve found. The anonymity of texting is powerful and people message us from wherever they are – libraries, workplaces, parks - without worrying about being overheard. It often helps them feel more open. It’s an incredible feeling to be able to listen to someone and to help them shift from despair to a place where they feel heard. ●

Damaged Pipes: Repair or Replace? When your pipes decay, become damaged or have tree roots burst through the sides it can be a costly and tedious task to fix. Josh Boesel from Total Relining Solutions answers some common questions about fixing up your drainage problems. Is it worth repairing damaged pipes, or is it better to just replace them? Replacing pipes is a very costly and time-consuming process. Thanks to new technology, a specialist plumber can repair them permanently for a fraction of the cost and often – the outcome is better.

What’s the difference in cost and disturbance to my property? Digging up your drainage system would require extensive digging works and often causes damage to your landscaping and surfaces (concrete, decking, tiles). The job could take several days to weeks and the costs can add up very quickly into the tens of thousands. Whereas pipe relining can typically be completed in one day and needs no heavy machinery and no digging in most cases. At times we may need to dig a small entry hole which will be filled in upon completion. This means the work is much more costeffective and will cause very little disruption to the property.

Founder and owner of Total Relining Solutions, Josh Boesel.

Will a pipe liner last as long as new pipes? A liner will extend the life of your existing pipes by 50 years. If it doesn’t we’ll replace it for free. We’re committed to offering you the best price and will beat any quote while still providing you with the absolute best quality of service.

. Damaged pipe

Relined pipe

Liner conforms to previous shape

What does the process involve? 1 Your drain system is fully inspected to identify where the damage lies and if pipe relining is appropriate. 2 All blockages are then removed with a highpressure water blaster. 3 A flexible textile liner with a specialised epoxy resin is inserted into the drain.

NSIDER27_p16-17_TOTAL_RELINING.indd 17

4 The liner is then cured in-situ using our state of the art equipment. 5 On completion the new liner takes the shape and form of the host pipe permanently repairing the drain.

rom Broadway ballads to pop bangers, the Loud and Proud Choir is striking a powerful chord in the northside community. Blending fierce inclusivity with feel-good anthems, the singing group is an LGBTQIA+ safe space founded by Crows Nest vocal coach and seasoned musical theatre performer, Olivier Christian. “There’s never been anything like this on the North Shore where queer, trans and allied locals can sing their hearts out together,” Ollie says. “You don’t need experience, just a love of singing and a heart for community.” With rehearsals taking place once a week in Crows Nest, the Loud and Proud Choir is

open to LGBTQIA+ people and allies of all backgrounds and vocal abilities over the age of 18. At each session, singers can expect a fun fusion of contemporary, pop and musical theatre tunes - think Natasha Bedingfield’s Unwritten, four-part harmonies on Chappell Roan’s Pink Pony Club and high-energy showstoppers from the stage and screen. “We focus on repertoire that lifts the vibe and creates emotional connection,” Ollie explains. “The magic of Loud and Proud isn’t just in the music - it’s in the shared joy and connection it creates.” “We’re building a loving, expressive community,” he continues. “It’s so powerful to be in a room of people who’ve maybe felt outcasted or silenced and who are now finding their voice.” Growing up on Sydney’s north shore, Ollie attended St Aloysius in Kirribilli where he discovered his love for musicals after watching the Hairspray movie starring John Travolta.

A chorus of community

Clockwise from far left: Ollie, second right, has been a backing singer for ARIA award-winning artist, Delta Goodrem; on stage performing; with members of the Loud and Proud Choir in Crows Nest

“That film changed everything for me,” he remembers. On leaving school, Ollie headed to the Australian Institute of Music in Surry Hills to study a degree in music, majoring in musical theatre. He followed this with stints at NIDA and the prestigious Stella Adler Academy in LA. A professional career on stage beckoned with successful roles in Kinky Boots, Into the Woods and Opera Australia’s Turandot, before Ollie shifted focus to offer his expertise in vocal and mindset coaching. His clients range from a six-yearold learning the basics to a 70-year-old retiree honing his voice for jazz performances. As well as singing lessons, Ollie also leads one-on-one coaching for those looking to speak more confidently. “It’s about finding your voice and taking it into everything you do,” he says. “There’s so

much fear and apology in how people speak. I coach them through the fear and into their resonance. It’s deeply fulfilling work.” So whether you’re a karaoke queen or a total beginner, the Loud and Proud Choir is your invitation to sing louder, stand prouder and find your people. Each ten-week term ends with a performance, with proceeds from ticket sales donated to charities such as 20ten, which supports homeless queer and trans youngsters. “Visibility is so important,” Ollie enthuses. “We all deserve to use our voices to take up space and find our community.” ● The Loud and Proud Choir runs for ten-week terms and rehearses from 6.30-8.30pm on Tuesdays. $275 per term, all identities and levels welcome. LOVE LOCAL

Centre of the

COMMUNITY Why our neighbourhood hubs matter more than ever

W

alk into a community centre on the northside and you notice it immediately - the warmth, the chatter, the strangers becoming friends over a cup of tea or a game of Scrabble. It’s a feeling that’s hard to put into words, but locals Jo Harvey and Gill Melling know it well. As managers of the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre and the Neutral Bay Community Centre respectively, the pair have spent years running spaces that support thousands of locals every year. “For me, this is the best job in the world,” Jo says. “Every day I wake up and feel so privileged to be doing it. I love meeting the people who come into the centre and hearing their stories. They’re so inspiring.” Gill nods in agreement. “No two days are the same,” she adds. “You meet so many different people and you’d never experience this special type of connection in an office job.” The scope of what these community centres offer is staggering, with schedules of activities and classes as diverse as the people they serve.

“THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO DON’T HAVE ANYONE AND WE LOOK AFTER THEM AS A COMMUNITY”

At the KNC, there are 30-40 programs running each week. Locals can join art classes, guitar groups, Scrabble and scones meetings, Pilates sessions, writing circles or language lessons to name just a few. The centre provides vital support to organisations such as the Ukrainian Women’s Refugee Group, as well as services that include free legal advice and a Justice of the Peace. They also fund KYDS counselling at the KNC offering free, confidential sessions for young people struggling with mental health, bullying or family challenges. “We’ve just funded KYDS for another year,” Jo says. “It blows me away how many kids need this service. Seeing the difference it makes in their lives, and their families, is incredible.” At NBCC, the calendar is just as packed, with fitness classes, a men’s chat group, social bridge, book club and language classes in Dutch, German, and French among others. This Spring, a new Mums and Bubs group will also give parents a chance to connect and find friendship and support. “It’s really important to bridge generations,” Gill says. “Society can feel so isolating but here we look after everyone.” “We treat everyone the same,” Jo adds. “People come in doing it tough or perhaps with no family close by and this is their safe space. We never know what someone’s day is like. It’s about belonging, not just keeping busy.”

Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre’s Jo Harvey, left, and the Neutral Bay Community Centre’s Gill Melling.

Both centres are independent non-profit organisations. They receive continued and much valued support from North Sydney Council as demand for their services grows. Collaboration between the centre managers, including those at the North Sydney Community Centre and the Crows Nest Centre, is key. “Each centre is female-led and we’re a strong group,” Gill says. “We meet regularly and if we need advice or resources, we ask. We support each other.” This support network ripples outwards too, with crucial connections across Council, social services, and charities including Mission Australia and dementia support. And then there’s the heartbeat of the centres, their volunteers. “Four thousand people a month come through the KNC,” Jo says. “We’d grind to a halt if we didn’t have the volunteers on our team.” “We couldn’t do it without them,” Gill nods. “They enrich everything we do. For example,

we’ve got an absolutely amazing volunteer who teaches Tai Chi four times a week, year-round, for free. That’s an amazing asset for the community.” As we spend more time scrolling and swiping, community centres offer something a screen never will - face-to-face connection. “There are so many people who don’t have anyone,” Jo says. “We can come together as a community and make connections that stretch across generations.” Gill agrees. “If you’ve got a skill or passion, come share it with our members. You’ll always learn something new, make friends and maybe even feel part of a new family.” It’s not the buildings or the programs that make these centres so vital. It’s the people, like Jo and Gill, their teams and volunteers, who greet everyone with open arms. “Community is what makes these centres special,” Jo says simply. “And that’s something we can’t afford to lose.” l

magic!

Fear free, family-owned and here for you and your pets, Pet Medical Milsons Point are your go-to local animal experts

T

For locals, by locals!

This family-owned clinic isn’t part of a big corporate chain and the lower north shore community is more than just a place of work for practice principals and animal whisperers, Dr Eugene Ong and Dr Jo-Ann Chan. The husband and wife team also live locally in North Sydney with their four children and are well known in the area. “We see the pets we treat at the park, in cafés, on their daily walks… that’s what makes this so special,” Jo-Ann says. “There’s no greater joy than hearing, ‘Look, it’s your vet!’ as a dog runs to say hello. We’re proud to be their friends too.”

reats? They’ve got them. Cuddles and belly rubs? Always on hand! Pet Medical Milsons Point veterinary clinic on Alfred Street, isn’t just where you take your pet for a check-up - it’s a local haven where wagging tails and happy paws are always welcome. This family-owned, Fear Free Certified clinic is about more than just medicine. It’s about building trust, nurturing relationships and making sure pets – and their people – feel safe, supported and cared for. So whether it’s a routine vaccination, an unexpected emergency or simply advice on keeping your furry friend happy and healthy, you’ll find expertise delivered with empathy from a team of familiar faces you can trust. As the practice continues to grow, the PMMP team remains committed to innovating while keeping pet care personal and stress-free. “We’re evolving our practice with the best tools modern medicine has to offer,” says Dr Eugene. “But one thing will never change - the way we care for every pet like they’re part of our own family.” ●

A paw-sitive experience for all

As a Fear-Free certified and cat friendly clinic, the team at Pet Medical Milsons Point ensure that every aspect of your pet’s visit is as stress free as possible. That means everything about the clinic is set up with your pet’s comfort in mind. From calming pheromone diffusers and gentle handling techniques to longer appointment times so nobody feels rushed. The result? Happier, calmer pets (and owners!) “We want every animal to leave feeling safe and secure,” says Jo. “When dogs walk out wagging their tails, or even force their owners to stop by on walkies for treats, or a cat settles happily into its carrier after a consult, we know we’ve done our job.”

Proud supporters of North Shore Dog Rescue, Dr Jo is often on call to provide medical care for pups in need to ensure they get the second chances they deserve. “Giving back to the community and supporting animals across the northside is really important to us,” says Jo. “Every pet deserves love and care, whether they’ve already found their family yet or they’re still waiting to be part of one.”

BALANCE Discover the I Am Project, locally made, all-natural homewares and skincare with added soul

N

orthside local Mary Alonti has made it her mission to help people find balance in their homes, bodies and minds. Through her Rosevillebased business, The I Am Project, she creates all-natural, toxin-free products and teaches practical, uplifting ways to embrace a clean and conscious lifestyle. Endlessly passionate about what she does, Mary radiates the same care and positivity that she pours into every product she creates. “I’ve been dedicated to the beauty industry for more than three decades,” Mary says. “Over the years, I noticed how many people struggled with their skin and, more importantly, with their self-belief and positive self-talk. My journey to creating my own skincare line, The I Am Project Australia, was born from a deep desire to make a difference.” Having faced her own challenges with self-belief, Mary knows the power of daily reminders. “It became clear to me that skincare could be more than just about

“IT BECAME CLEAR TO ME THAT SKINCARE COULD BE MORE THAN JUST ABOUT OUTER BEAUTY”

outer beauty, it could also be a source of inner transformation too,” she continues. “That’s why each I Am Project product is crafted with the finest natural ingredients and includes positive affirmations on the label. It’s my way of infusing skincare with positivity and self-worth, reminding each person who uses our products of their inherent value every time they use them.” The I Am Project’s range is 100% plantbased. Candles are crafted from pure soy wax with essential oils and phthalate-free fragrances. Skincare is formulated with deliciously nourishing natural oils like coconut, shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba and olive oil. “I’m committed to creating products that aren’t only effective but also safe and environmentally friendly,” Mary says. “It’s taken me over a decade to formulate and perfect the range.”

Power of positivity The I Am Project founder, Mary Alonti, at the Roseville store and workshop space. Mary’s gorgeous products encourage self-care and self-confidence.

That same ethos applies to her bath and body products: whipped sugar scrubs, shower steamers for aromatherapy, hand creams, face serums and lip balms - all crafted to be naturally indulgent and restorative. Mary’s work is grounded in the belief that wellness is about more than yoga or green smoothies. “People think wellness means yoga or breathwork. But for me, it’s the wellness of thought,” she says. “Everyone needs to take care of their mental health. It’s your inner dialogue, those everyday conversations you have with yourself.” Her approach weaves together practical and fun product creation workshops and parties with a gentle but powerful focus on self-worth and gratitude. “Through our workshops and birthday parties at our shop, I aim to share not just skincare knowledge, but also the principles

that have dramatically improved my own life,” she continues. In addition to the events she runs in store, Mary also runs natural skincare and wellbeing workshops at Pymble Ladies’ College, where students create their own products while learning about positive self-talk. “Each I Am Project product is not only crafted with the finest natural ingredients to nourish the skin and your environment, they also provide an opportunity to celebrate and nurture positivity and self-worth,” Mary concludes. “Because skincare can be more than just about what’s on the outside. It can be a source of inner transformation too.” l Find The I Am Project at 106 Pacific Hwy, Roseville and theiamprojectaustralia.com.au Open Weds 10am-5pm, Thurs & Fri 10am3pm, Sat 8am-1pm and Sundays for party bookings.

his Spring, landscape painter Sandra Blackburne unveils her latest exhibition, Wild, at Working Dog Gallery in St Leonards. Taking place from the 17-30 November, the show brings together more than twenty paintings that

“THERE ARE SO MANY PEACEFUL PLACES THAT FEEL WILD AND FREE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF SYDNEY”

celebrate the beauty and freedom of Australia’s landscapes. “I’ve always loved the nuance and the freedom of an untamed landscape,” Sandra says. “All my work is based on my plein paintings. I love that solitude, being at one with the space, with that natural environment. I don’t think of anything else while I’m there.” A celebration of rivers, bush, mountains and seas, Blackburne finds inspiration in nature in all its forms. From the glowing reds of the MacDonnell Ranges in the Northern Territory to the cool blues of coastal waters

and the mirrored reflections of the local rivers, her canvases capture the essence of the wild, encouraging viewers to reconnect with the natural world. “The colours of inland Australia are amazing and worlds apart from the coast,” Sandra says. A number of works depict northside landscapes, from the beaches to Mosman and the Lane Cover River. “There are so many peaceful places that feel wild and free right in the middle of Sydney,” Sandra enthuses. “Take Lane Cove National Park, it’s just a five minute drive from Chatswood. The show includes pieces which capture the beautiful reflections on the water of the Lane Cove River, where the land dissolves into the water.” Ranging from intimate 60cm squares to sweeping 1.5-metre landscapes, Sandra’s works are scaled for city living. The collection offers apartment dwellers the opportunity to enjoy glimpses of the country. “It’s about having a bit of wilderness on your wall,” Sandra smiles. “Bringing the joy of the outside, in.” ● Wild – a solo exhibition by Sandra Blackburne, 17-30 November. Simple ways TO SAVE

Dial down your data According to the ACCC’s annual Communications Market Report, the majority of Australians are consistently paying for more mobile data than they actually use. Many plans only start at 50GB, meaning users are paying a premium for that unused data. Switching mobile providers to Yomojo can make a real difference. Yomojo’s no-lock-in, low-cost mobile plans have a range of data options, starting from 29GB. Switching is simple and you can even build bundles for extra savings. Audit your subscriptions Streaming services, fitness apps, cloud storage…these all add up. Set aside an hour every three months to review your direct debits and online subscriptions. Are you really using all five streaming services? Can you share a family plan or rotate them depending on what you’re watching? Cancel

THIS FLEXIBILITY MEANS YOU’RE NOT PAYING FOR EXTRAS YOU WON’T USE

what you don’t use to free up some extra cash each month because it all adds up! Shop smarter Impulse buying at the supermarket is a fast way to overspend. Combat this with a weekly meal plan and a shopping list that takes what you’ve already got in your pantry or freezer into account. Try shopping online to avoid instore temptation too. Fun for free! School holidays and weekends don’t have to break the bank. Libraries, local councils and community groups often run free or low-cost programs with everything from craft workshops and coding clubs to nature walks and skate clinics on the schedule. A bit of planning can save you hundreds each term and keep everyone entertained. Plan-tastic savings Choose a flexible mobile plan which doesn’t lock you in to one-size-fits-all pricing. Locally owned telco Yomojo allows you to choose from a range of packages to fit your budget by choosing only the data you actually need with unlimited talk and text. This flexibility means you’re not paying for extras you won’t use and you can easily adjust

C

hristopher Thé knows good cakes. His popular stall at the Northside Produce Market, Hearthe, is an outpost of his artisan cake store of the same name, which he founded in 2023 after selling cult bakery, Black Star Pastry. The creative force behind the Strawberry Watermelon Cake, aka “the world’s most Instagrammed cake”, Thé is now sharing his love for native ingredients in his new book, Modern Australian Baking. “My aim is to show you how native ingredients can become a valuable part of your everyday baking and bring you closer to the food this land has to offer,” he explains. This recipe appears in the book. “Made with almonds and whole boiled oranges, this moist cake does not include the syrup that typically accompanies orange cakes, and instead is frosted with a lemon myrtle icing. A favourite in the shop, it is often chosen over fancier layered cakes. This version is garnished with candied sweet potato (yes, vegetables can be dessert too), which brings a nice earthy crunch. To make the candied sweet potato, you’ll need to start the day before you make the cake.”●

52

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS CHEN

METHOD: • To make the candied sweet potato, combine the sugar and 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) water in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Place the sweet potato slices in the syrup and simmer gently until soft, about 15 minutes. Drain the slices from the syrup. By now, the sweet potato should be quite malleable and able to be wound up into scrolls that resemble flowers. Crumple up pieces of baking paper and use them to hold the rosettes upright on a baking tray. Dehydrate overnight in an oven set to 50˚C (120˚F). If your oven cannot be set this low, use a food dehydrator instead. • For the almond and orange cake, wash the oranges well and place in a pot. Cover with cold water and bring to the boil over a high heat. Turn down to a simmer, place a lid on the pot, slightly ajar, and boil for about 1 hour. The oranges are ready when they can be pierced easily with a knife. Drain the oranges, allow to cool, then puree until smooth. • Measure out 510 g (1 lb 2 oz) of the puree and add it to a large bowl with all the remaining

orange cake ingredients. Mix well until combined. • Preheat the oven to 170˚C (340˚F). • Grease and line a 20 cm (8 in) round cake tin with baking paper. Pour the batter into the tin and smooth flat with a palette knife. Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool. • While the cake is cooling, make the lemon myrtle icing. Combine the white chocolate, cream and brown sugar in a saucepan and stir over a low heat until the chocolate has melted and the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature. Meanwhile, combine the butter, icing sugar and lemon myrtle in a bowl and whip with a hand-held mixer until light, about 5 minutes. Pour in the cooled brown sugar mixture and continue to whip until well combined. • To assemble, apply the icing to the top of the cake and smooth flat with a palette knife. Garnish with candied sweet potato rosettes, extra ground lemon myrtle and edible flowers.

➜ Join Christopher Thé and Tawnya Bahr in conversation at Northside Produce Market on 4 October to launch Chris’ new book with a tasting journey of baked creations! 10-11am, $10, bookings essential. northsydneycentre.com.au

Get bowled over with an event at The Greens in North Sydney

s the days get longer and the social calendar starts to fill up, North Sydney locals are searching for the perfect spot to celebrate. Sitting pretty in St Leonards Park, The Greens has it all - three full-sized barefoot bowling greens, a spacious alfresco courtyard, flexible event spaces and menus that range from casual bites to canapes, BBQs and celebratory feasts. It’s a one-stop party venue where colleagues, families and friends can all come together for a good time. “What people love most about The Greens is the unique combination of celebrations we can offer,” says Events Manager Kelly-Selina Englezos. “Great food and drinks, indoor

and outdoor spaces, and even the chance to play a competitive game or two of bowls. It’s a mix you don’t find everywhere. Whether it’s a big event or a casual gathering, we aim to create memories that last.” The Greens’ history as a bowling club stretches back to 25 April 1888, when the venue first opened. As the second oldest bowls club in NSW, it has long been a gathering place for locals. Following a renovation in 2014, that legacy continues today, with the greens doubling as a backdrop for parties, live music and playful competition. Bowls remains a much-loved highlight of events at the venue, whether guests are in it for a trophy, bragging rights or just a social roll between drinks. “Bowls is always a favourite,” Kelly says. “You can book in for an event and we supply an umpire and a trophy for the winning team which all adds a playful, social element you don’t get at many venues.”

It’s really sets the tone for the season ahead.”

Throughout December, the courtyard area transforms for the festive season and includes a large marquee to ensure the fun can continue rain or shine! Weekday packages cater to casual groups with tacos, burgers, salads and a 90-minute game of bowls, while other options include Christmas-themed menus. Larger groups can enjoy food stations with paella, mezze and freshly cooked prawns on the menu, paired with premium drinks. “Our Christmas food stations are really special,” Kelly says. “They turn the courtyard into a little festival of food and fun. It’s a unique experience for parties in North Sydney.”

90 years young! MOMENTS IN TIME

I

t’s a big happy 90th birthday to Luna Park, Sydney’s heritage-listed amusement park and home to the city’s most famous face. Officially opened to the public on the 4th October 1935, the five-acre site at Lavender Bay became an instant icon, with queues snaking under the Harbour Bridge to experience the rides and shows. Two and a half million feet of timber and 60,000 bags of cement were used in the construction of the park, with early attractions such as The Dipper, the River Caves, the Tumble Bug and Funny Land drawing a steady stream of visitors. While the rides and even the face may have changed over the years, nine decades on, Luna Park remains an iconic piece of Sydney’s cultural landscape. ●

Just for fun The Luna Park face has gone through eight iterations since the park’s opening in 1935. The current face, made of fiberglass, was installed in 1995 and is based on the “Old King Cole” design from 1950. The pillars on either side of the face are modelled after the Chrysler Building in New York.

Come Away With Us www.sydneytallships.com.au A specialist family law firm, committed to helping you. Should I mediate? The short answer is yes. Why? ➜ Mediation means you maintain control of the outcome of both your property division and the arrangements for your kids, rather than relinquishing those decisions to a judge. ➜ Court costs often exceed $100,000 for each of you. Mediation is a fraction of that cost. ➜Litigation is stressful and emotionally draining and the delays in Court mean it will be some years before you get a result. A final result through mediation can be achieved within weeks. ➜Mediation is much more likely to help preserve your relationship with your ex so you can co-parent more effectively going forward.

Mediation comes in all shapes and sizes. You can choose to mediate with or without the support of your lawyer. You can elect to do a child inclusive mediation so your kids have a voice. If there’s a power imbalance within your relationship, which makes negotiating difficult, mediators are skilled at evening out the balance. Reid Family Lawyers isn’t just about legal representation for your family law dispute. We also offer affordable and supportive mediation services. Fiona is an expert family law mediator. Her years of family law experience along with her objective and child focussed approach has helped countless couples resolve their family law disputes. Ted the puggle, northsider’s ‘rover’ reporter, meets Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Daisy, the Art Assistant at Studio A in St Leonards

Ted: Hi Daisy! Tell us about your job. Daisy: I’ve recently become the new Art Assistant at Studio A. I mainly provide cuddles for the artists and staff and have been a model for an artwork or two. I’m also a great lunch inspector and help clean up the kitchen floor. My mum sometimes calls me ‘Hoover’ as I’m so good at cleaning up crumbs! T: How did you get into this line of work? D: My mum adopted me last year and I think we were destined to find each other. She found me wandering alone right outside her house one afternoon. I was covered in fleas and had a couple of nasty lumps and bumps on my head and tummy. That didn’t stop her falling in love with me instantly. When she had no luck finding my owner, I had to go to the pound and foster care for around two months. After all my vet work was done, I was put up for adoption. On the very same day, my mum emailed to enquire about me, as she couldn’t stop

thinking of me! Two days later I went home with her. We were definitely meant to be together and I’ve been helping out at Studio A, where my mum is the Principal Artist, since July this year. T: What do you like best about work? D: I love all the artists and they love me! Everyone is so gentle and I love that they give me cuddles. I make them smile, especially when I’m sleeping and I’m snoring away in my bed in the artroom. They bring treats for me and one staff member gifted me a hand crocheted jumper that I wear as a snood. Sometimes artists take photos of me and I become a source of inspiration for their artworks. I was given a special nickname by Thom Roberts, the famous artist and four-time Archibald finalist, who changes people’s names, including his own. Thom named me “Propellor”, I think it’s a reference to my tail when I’m happy.

L to R: Artist Katrina Brennan did a really cute drawing of me, complete with daisies! I have it hanging in my corner of the art room; I’ve also had a beautiful portrait drawn of me by artist Guy Fredericks, who does commissioned pet portraits. It was gifted to my mum by the artist, who I’m having a cuddle with, here; here’s me having a pat from Archibald finalist, Emily Crockford.

Here’s me in the studio, left, and with my mum, Emma, who’s on the art team at Studio A, a creative collective supporting artists with intellectual disabilities.

T: Where are your fave local dog spots? D: I always go for a walk around the IBM building where Studio A is located when I arrive. My mum and I get coffee together at Charlie and Franks and I’ve visited Eckersleys, the art store in our street, for supplies which was fun. T: What’s your favourite food and why? D: I love ALL food! Particularly ‘people food’! And cat food! I live with a feline sister named Missy, but Mum and me sometimes call her Hissy-Missy. I like to try and steal her food whenever I get the chance. The cat can be a bit of a bully and chases me sometimes, so this is how I get her back. T: I’m sure you’re really good almost all the time, just like me, but what’s the naughtiest thing you’ve done? D: I really am such a very good, exceptionally amazing girl and there are not too many naughty moments I can put to my name. I’m a notorious snorer - it’s not a naughty thing, just something I do. I snore loudest when I’m dreaming and sometimes I am relocated in the middle of the night from the middle of the bed, where I sleep under the covers, back to the couch if my snoring is too loud! I may have done two accidental wee wees in the studio...I’m normally very good and go outside, but Studio A is such a big 360 degree, wide-open space of awesomeness and there are so many smells, that for a dog it can feel a little like being outside...at least they weren’t on any of the artworks! ●

Grass Seeds: Tiny trouble in warm weather

Grass seeds quickly become a problem for pets in Spring. These barbed little seeds are designed to spread, but instead of drifting harmlessly in the air, they often catch in fur, paws, ears or even eyes. Once attached to your pet, grass seeds can work their way deeper and cause irritation, infection or even abscesses. Early signs can be easy to miss. You might see your pet limping, licking a paw, shaking their head or sneezing repeatedly. Grass seeds rarely fall out on their own and the longer they remain attached to your pet, the greater the risk of complications. Prevention is simple. After every walk, check between your pet’s toes, around their ears and under the armpits and tail. A quick once-over can prevent a small problem from becoming a painful one. If you notice any sudden discomfort, it’s always safest to book a check with your vets. 28 Alfred St S, Milsons Point

Faces of courage This North Sydney mural celebrates cancer care heroes

Painted by acclaimed Australian artist Sarah McCloskey, the mural captures the bond between McGrath Cancer Care Nurse Joylene Fletcher and her 26-year-old patient, Emily Quinlan

B

ack in 2022, to mark International Nurses Day, the McGrath Foundation unveiled a powerful mural at The Library Café on Miller Street in North Sydney. The charity had set an ambitious target: to have 250 McGrath Breast Care Nurses by 2025. Fast forward three years and that goal has not just been reached, it’s been surpassed. Today, the Foundation has over 300 nurses providing vital support across

the country. And since January, they have expanded their care beyond breast cancer, meaning these nurses now support anyone facing a cancer diagnosis. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With 58 Aussies diagnosed with breast cancer every day, it’s a timely reminder to check your breasts regularly. Head to nbcf.org.au for information on being breast aware. l

Why experience

COUNTS

Buying a home is one of life’s biggest milestones. Robert Bulgin from Mortgage Choice North Sydney shares why engaging an experienced mortgage broker can give you confidence at every step

W

hen it comes to securing a home loan, choosing the right mortgage broker can make all the difference, both to the outcome of your application and your stress levels along the way. At Mortgage Choice North Sydney, we have over 30 years of combined experience. That means we’ve navigated changing lending environments, created solutions for every kind of situation and built trusted relationships with a wide range of lenders. We’ve seen how the right advice at the right time can completely change the outcome. The value of experience An experienced broker knows your needs go beyond getting a loan approved. It’s about structuring your loan in a way that suits your lifestyle, both now and into the future, whether you’re buying your first home, upsizing for a growing family, refinancing or building an investment portfolio. Before you choose a broker, take the time to do some research. Check their years of experience, read reviews, ask friends for recommendations and don’t be afraid to meet with more than one broker before making your decision. The personal approach While there’s plenty of information available online, remember a home loan isn’t a

one-size-fits-all process. What works for someone else might not be the best fit for you and that’s where personalised guidance and relationships with lenders really matter. Think of it like consulting “Dr Google” for a medical concern. The internet can give you a starting point, but you’ll still need to speak to a qualified professional who understands your unique situation. Why we’re different Choosing a broker is about finding someone who will be a partner for the long haul. At Mortgage Choice North Sydney, Leeanne and I have supported thousands of clients through every stage of their financial journey. Every client’s needs are different and so is every loan. That’s why we take the time to understand your goals and challenges before recommending a lender or product. From our first conversation to settlement day and beyond, we pride ourselves on listening first, tailoring the solution and keeping communication clear. Our advice won’t cost you a cent but it could save you time, money and stress. So if you’re thinking about getting on the property ladder, refinancing your current loan or simply want to ask a few questions, we’d love to have a no-obligation chat to see how we can help. l

MEET FLAT PACK JACK!

f the thought of an IKEA delivery leaves you feeling unhinged, there’s a local 12-year-old who can help. Meet Jack Dougherty aka Flat Pack Jack, Cremorne’s youngest handyman, who can build your furniture faster than you can say Billy Bookcase. “I’ve always enjoyed making things,” Jack says. “I used to do lots of Lego and I’d help my dad assemble furniture when I was little. I enjoy screwing in all the screws and seeing all the boards come together into furniture.” The idea for his business began to build in January 2023, when 10-year-old Jack picked out a new desk, bookshelf and chair for his room from the self-build superstore, IKEA.

“I USED TO DO LOTS OF LEGO AND I WOULD HELP MY DAD ASSEMBLE FURNITURE”

“When we got home we didn’t move quickly enough to put it all together so Jack took matters in his own hands,” Jack’s mum Kami remembers. “When we walked into his room we were shocked to see he’d done it himself without a peep! My brother suggested that Jack could do this professionally because people hate flat packs.” Having enjoyed constructing his furniture, Jack was keen and a few weeks later, Kami posted in a community group on Facebook to see if any neighbours needed a hand. Jack’s first paying job came soon after from a local who admitted her husband was ‘hopeless with flatpacks’ and needed help with a few projects. Jack quickly got to work, building a desk, an office chair, a child’s strider bike and a console table. Word quickly spread about Jack’s knack for a flat pack. Community pages lit up with people needing help and Jack’s school newsletter even gave him a shout-out.

Clockwise from far left: Jack in action and with a finished flat pack; with mum, Kami; as a youngster; Jack with Dad, Dave, Mum, Kami, and sister, Alex.

Now, Jack handles the builds while Kami takes care of bookings and transport. Jobs start with locals sending through a snap of their flatpack. Kami shows Jack, he’ll size up the challenge and then Kami sends across a quote, depending on the complexity of the job – something with lots of drawers costing more than a table, for example. “I’m basically everything a business needs except the assembly part - I’m hopeless there,” Kami laughs. “The directions always look like a foreign language to me!” Repeat customers keep Jack and his Allen key busy, with jobs ranging from office chairs to tables and everything in-between. As well as honing Jack’s furniture construction skills, his enterprise is building valuable life skills too. “When Jack started getting jobs, I saw that it was teaching him to be responsible dealing with customers and his finances,” Kami says. “It’s a great experience for him.

His interactions with people will teach him interpersonal skills and I hope he continues to manage his finances well. He’s a saver which will serve him all his life.” As well as having his head screwed on when it comes to finances, Jack is focussed on his future too. “I really want to be an aeronautical engineer,” he says, a career path that will undoubtedly benefit from his flat pack problem solving skills. “All of our customers have been beautiful people,” Kami continues. “I love meeting them and have been told by ‘the boss’ that I talk too much! People are so nice giving a kid a chance.” So if your furniture building has got you frazzled or your DIY skills are a disaster, get in touch with Flat Pack Jack – chances are, he’ll nail that project in no time. l Need some flat pack help? IN THE LOCAL LEGEND

As she steps back into the world of A Country Practice for her latest role, actor Georgie Parker shares her love for the northside stage that always feels like home

T

he Ensemble Theatre’s house lights dim and the buzz of the audience starts to settle as actor Georgie Parker waits back stage. She’s been here countless times over the past 20 years, but these moments, just before her cue, never lose their magic. “It’s such a beautiful, exquisite feeling, waiting in the wings before the lights go down,” Georgie tells northsider. “Every play I do at the Ensemble I have that pinch me moment where I can’t quite believe I’m working in a place I always dreamed

“THERE’S NOTHING LIKE IT IN SYDNEY. YOU’RE RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AUDIENCE”

of working. I just think “Oh God, I’m so lucky,” and it feels the same every time.” One of Australia’s most recognisable faces - a two-time Gold Logie winner with beloved roles in top-rating TV shows including A Country Practice, All Saints and Home and Away to name but a few - Parker’s performance roots run deep at the Kirribilli theatre. Growing up on Sydney’s northside, she was just 15 when she first set foot inside the Ensemble for her high school work experience. “I loved it so much I became a volunteer usher,” Georgie remembers. “I’d rush down after school on a Tuesday to help and it was a great way for me to see the plays, to observe how good actors maintained a role over a long run. I learnt a lot from that.”

“THE BEST COMEDIES HAVE SOME TRAGEDY IN THEM, THEY LIVE HAPPILY SIDE BY SIDE”

Parker’s latest role at the Ensemble is writer Judy in How to Plot a Hit in Two Days, a sharp and heartfelt new comedy by playwright – and self-professed A Country Practice fanatic - Melanie Tait. Set in the imagined writers’ room of A Country Practice in the 1980s, the play follows five fictional writers creating a script for the show’s most famous storyline, the heartbreaking death of Molly Jones. Packed with creative clashes, big laughs and emotional moments, it offers a peek behind the scenes of one of Australia’s iconic TV dramas. “It’s so interesting experiencing A Country Practice from this different perspective,” says Georgie, who played nurse Lucy Gardiner in the soap for four years. “It’s a lovely world to inhabit but when we read through the script, which is set behind the scenes, I actually forgot I was on the show!”

THEATRE IMAGES COURTESY ENSEMBLE THEATRE

That early experience left a lasting impression on Parker. “It’s a very special space for me to now work in,” Georgie continues. “There’s nothing like it in Sydney. You’re right there in the middle of the audience, you can see their faces, you can feel them move. It’s a great exercise in concentration and commitment to the work so that you can embrace them but also do that wonderful thing where you include them and ignore them at the same time. I love that constant juggle, it’s so immersive and unique. They’re right there in the play with you.”

Clockwise from top left: Actor Anne Tenney as Molly Jones in her final moments on A Country Practice; Georgie on stage at Ensemble in Chapter 2 in 2005; appearing in David Williamson’s The Great Divide at the theatre with John Wood last year; Glenn Hazeldine and Georgie with playwright David Williamson. In 2023, the actors reprised their 2010 roles in Williamson’s Rhinestone Rex and Miss Monica; Barefoot in the Park, 2016; as Terri Sullivan in All Saints in 1998.

“The play is very funny and a beautiful insight into how people come up with big stories. The best comedies have some tragedy in them, they live happily side by side, comedy sneaks in, the audience finds something to give themselves a break. It’s all about that ebb and flow of the story.” An ambassador for the Ensemble, Parker champions the theatre’s commitment to local playwrights and nurturing new talent. “It’s so important when we have such an influx of international productions and content. It can be difficult to get Australian stories and voices into our viewing lives. I encourage anyone to go to the theatre, to support Australian stories and talent.” “As an actor, it’s also so nice to not have to put on an accent,” she adds with a laugh. So after 40 years in the entertainment industry, what would 15-year-old Georgie Parker think if she could see where she is now?

“I’d say you were showing me someone else’s life!” she smiles. “I just wanted to act and when you’re 15 you imagine the impossible life of being an actor. I can’t quite believe I’m now on that stage, in that space working, and not just in the audience looking in.” “The Ensemble is a great reminder that it’s always about you and the audience and the storyline,” Georgie concludes. “You don’t just see the show, you feel the show. I love going back there between other jobs because it’s like putting your feet back on the ground again and getting back to what’s important. I feel very privileged to be there.” ● How To Plot A Hit In Two Days by Melanie Tait runs at the Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli until 11th October. Tickets for the theatre’s 2026 season are also on sale now at ensemble.com.au

Local’s last word. My favourite place for coffee is…Breadworks Café in McMahons Point for an almond latte on my way to work. Great coffee and genuinely friendly service. The best meal I’ve had in the area was at…Sails Lavender Bay. Delicious grilled pink snapper and stunning harbour views, perfect for a long lunch. If I want to enjoy a cocktail, I go to…RAFI in North Sydney. I usually go for a Margarita, but their Fragola Fizz is a favourite too. My fave local takeaway is… Glorietta. They do the best pizza and they’re great with allergy-friendly options. My top favourite local services in the area are… Salon Yazbek at Neutral Bay for a perfect colour and cut. Always lively and the team makes every visit

The secret spot I love to go to locally is… Ambi’s Chai in North Sydney, although it may not be such a secret! They make the best authentic chai lattes. so enjoyable. I also love the Northside Produce Market for seasonal produce, fresh flowers and baked treats. If I’ve got guests in town, I’ll take them to… Piato restaurant in McMahons Point for dinner. We love ordering the Greek lamb shoulder or the seafood platter. They’re delicious, with very generous servings, and perfect for sharing with

family and friends over a bottle of wine. My favourite local walk is… the Cremorne Point walk. It’s so lovely to be able to have a swim in Maccallum Pool in the warmer weather. My ideal day in the area would consist of… a morning walk through the Kirribilli Markets, followed by a swim at Chinamans Beach and then a trip to The Oaks for a rosé in the afternoon. The things about living in the area I love the most are...the sense of community, the beautiful mix of harbour and greenery and the convenience of having everything close-by, with the city just a short trip away.

The words I’d use to describe this area are...

Welcoming, local, charming
