Little Obelia, an underwater character from May Gibbs’ stories, sits perched on the harbour foreshore at Nutcote, Gibbs’ former home in Kurraba Point. The sculpture, created by late Lavender Bay artist Peter Kingston, is submerged at high tide - just like Little Obelia herself, who would retreat to her shell at the bottom of the sea to count her pearls of wisdom.

success A RECIPE FOR

MasterChef Australia winner Elena Duggan’s mission to take northsiders beyond the plate

Food educator and produce advocate
Elena Duggan

For Elena Duggan, cooking isn’t just about creating delicious meals - it’s about empowerment, connection and joy. That’s why, after winning MasterChef Australia in 2016, the former art teacher didn’t rush into opening a restaurant or café. Instead she is carving a career that blends her love of cooking and Australian produce with her passion for education.

“Facilitating learning for others is so exciting to me,” Elena tells northsider. “And food is a great way to inspire curiosity!”

From sharing stories with farmers at the locals markets to watching students taste exotic fruits for the first time or succeed in cooking a dish for themselves, Elena’s focus goes far beyond the plate.

A fresh service

Teaming up with Straight To The Source, a team of food experts who connect farmers with chefs led by Lucy Allon and Tawnya Bahr, Elena began helping with their work connecting hospo teams with primary producers and advocating at industry events.

“I grew up a short walk from Eumundi Market in Queensland so I’ve always had an understanding for where food comes from,” Elena says. “And I love learning from farmers. They always have creative ideas about using produce and how different ingredients work together. When you respect food, you waste less, eat better and appreciate every bite.”

So when Tawnya, who has led the Northside Produce Market’s early morning Behind The Scenes Tours for 15 years, decided to hang up her market hat last year, Elena was the perfect person to step up and give locals a taste of where their food comes from.

“The Northside Produce Market is such a fun place,” Elena enthuses. “It’s energetic and there’s always something new to try. Whether it’s an ingredient or a fresh perspective on food, the market is full of discoveries.”

The free Behind The Scenes Tours, which run intermittently throughout the year, provide a guided experience where attendees can meet stallholders, learn about seasonal produce and pick up practical tips.

“The farmers and producers are very passionate and their knowledge is invaluable,” Elena continues. “When you take the time to talk to them, you learn so much about farming practices, sustainability and even cooking tips you’d never think of. It’s not just about buying the food, it’s about the stories behind it. I want people to feel inspired.”

From MasterChef to mentor

Beyond the markets, Elena is also bringing this foodie inspiration to a new generation, with her work at a local SSP (School for Specific Purposes) in Willoughby. The SSP

“THE FARMERS AND PRODUCERS ARE SO PASSIONATE AND THEIR KNOWLEDGE IS INVALUABLE”
Elena, in the pink, with her first Behind The Scenes Tour at Northside Produce Market. A special kids only session, the free tour was packed with fun info and tasty samples!

educates a variety of students who face additional challenges including disrupted educations, neurodivergence and difficult home life circumstances.

“Pretty much every teen is hungry!” Elena says. “So food is a fantastic way to connect with them. Teaching them about ingredients and how to cook gives them independence and confidence. They can look after and nourish themselves and don’t have to be reliant on others.”

One student, who dreams of becoming a zookeeper, struggled with sensory issues around chopping fruit and vegetables - an essential skill for his future career. Through hands-on experience with Elena, he has learned how to prepare food not just for himself, but for the animals he hopes to care for.

“With a handful of skills, these kids can do so much. The cliché of the light bulb moment, of it clicking and them being able to take it forward is everything,” she says. “It’s infinite what we can do here and it’s incredibly fulfilling.”

On Fridays, Elena runs a cultural feast program, where students and staff share meals inspired by their backgrounds. This feeds everyone’s minds as much as it fills their tummies. “It’s about belonging, connection and celebrating what’s important to them,” she says. Shop smart and love local Whether she’s guiding market tours, teaching students essential cooking skills or inspiring home cooks to think more creatively, Elena hopes to encourage others to look beyond the plate.

“Education is at the heart of everything I do,” she says. “The more we know about our food - where it comes from, how it’s grown and the people behind it - the better choices we make, which means we don’t just eat better, we live better too.” l

IN SEASON

Elena’s top Autumn produce picks

Preserving Summer

Get fruity

Stone fruits, like plums and peaches, are on their way out in Autumn so you can buy in bulk and get preserving! Think plum jam, pickles and relishes. Great for sandwiches and cheese boards.

Soup-er vegies

I always love the lighter soups at the start of the season as the weather starts to cool. There’s a great variety of greens in season, such as chard, as well as delicious sweet potatoes and pumpkin.

We’ll be seeing dragon fruit, persimmons and beautiful big apples. Chop them up into fruit salads, use them in baking, serve them with cheeses, get pickling, dry slices of persmimmons in the oven for an easy on the go snack... The possibilities are endless!

Perfectly imperfect

Salad days aren’t over yet!

Warm salads are great for Autumn, simply mixing greens with roasted vegies. We’ll be seeing gorgeous cauliflowers, which are so sweet at the beginning of season. Break one up and roast it with chickpeas and sumac, a great base with protein.

Use the ‘ugly’ produce! ‘Imperfect’ fruits and vegetables contain the same flavour and nutrition, they’re great for cooking and using them helps to reduce food waste. Everything looks the same on the plate anyway!

Free Seniors Only ‘Behind The Scenes’ Northside Produce Market Tour

Over 60s are invited to join Elena for a market tour from 8.30-9.30am on Saturday 15 March as part of the NSW Seniors Festival. Bookings are essential! For more info and upcoming tour dates, head to northsydneycentre.com.au.

How Virtual Reality is revolutionising lessons at Reddam House North Shore

BRINGING LEARNING

Imagine diving to the depths of the ocean, visiting Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London or journeying to the surface of Mars…all without leaving the classroom. These are just some of the immersive environments students at the newly opened Reddam House North Shore are able to experience, all thanks to the school’s state-of-the-art Inspired Metaverse learning program.

The classrooms of the future – today!

With Virtual Reality, or VR, a world of possibility is available for the pupils at Reddam House.

As well as bringing history to life and adding a new dimension to science classes, VR can help make abstract mathematical concepts tangible and accessible. The immersive technology enhances student engagement and transforms learning into an interactive experience by bringing lessons to life.

A new dimension in education

VR enables experiential learning and lifts learning off the page, allowing students to embark on virtual field trips that broaden horizons and deepen their understanding of complex subjects. It has also been shown to enhance understanding and raise confidence.

The Reddam Difference

The co-educational and non-denominational independent school welcomed the first

Art with heart

Discover the Martine Gallery on Sailors Bay Road in Northbridge

Showcasing over 40 Australian creatives, the Martine Gallery in Northbridge is a vibrant space where contemporary local art meets stylish home décor, jewellery and gifts. The neighbourhood design destination offers a carefully curated collection of artworks, with each piece hand-selected by owner, internationally renowned artist, Martine Vanderspuy.

As well as producing acclaimed resin artworks inspired by the ocean, for the past decade Martine has also been channelling her creativity into the Gallery, alongside a cause close to her heart - raising funds and awareness for Mitochondrial (Mito) disease research. Martine’s youngest son, Tom, was diagnosed with the debilitating genetic

“I TRY TO CAPTURE THE SEA’S POWER, TRANQUILITY AND MOVEMENT IN MY ARTWORKS”

disorder, which affects the body’s ability to produce energy, leading to organ dysfunction and, in severe cases, death. With no known cure, the need for research and funding is critical.

By donating a percentage of every sale at the Martine Gallery, and organising regular fundraising events in the space, Martine has so far contributed close to $500,000 towards Mito research, proving that art can be a powerful force for change.

“I try to capture the sea’s power, tranquillity and movement in my artworks, which are inspired by the ocean. In turn, I hope to give that energy back to the fight against Mito,” Martine explains.

So whether you’re an art lover, a home styling enthusiast, or simply browsing for that special something, there’s always a piece to discover at Martine Gallery, where art delights, inspires and changes lives. ●

MIRACLES

How northsider Aminata Conteh-Biger is changing the lives of women and children more than 16,000 kilometres away…

Twenty five years ago, Aminata Conteh-Biger didn’t understand what Australia was, let alone imagine she’d one day be the CEO of an international charity with its HQ in Lavender Bay.

Originally from Sierra Leone, at the age of just 18, Aminata was kidnapped by rebel soliders during the brutal civil war that raged in the West African country from 1991-2002. Held captive for several months, on her release she became the first female refugee from Sierra Leone to arrive in Australia.

Building a life for herself on Sydney’s north shore, Aminata met and fell in love with her now husband, Antoine, and it was the complicated delivery of the couple’s first child, daughter Sarafina, that inspired her maternal rights crusade. With seven doctors on hand to ensure both she and her bub were safe, Aminata quickly realised they both would have likely died if they’d been in Sierra Leone.

The country is one of the worst places in the world to become a mother, with a critical shortage of maternal health professionals.

“MANY HAVE COMPLETED THEIR EDUCATION AND BECOME COMMUNITY

ADVOCATES FOR CHANGE”

There are fewer than 500 midwives and eight obstetricians for a population the same size as NSW which by comparison has 8000 midwives and around 650 specialists.

Women in Sierra Leone are 200 times more likely to die in childbirth than women in Australia, with five dying every day due to pregnancy-related issues, and 11,000 newborns die every year.

Even if Mum survives, she faces the risk of fistula, a preventable condition caused by prolonged labour that can result in incontinence and even paralysis.

“I can’t change what happened to me in Sierra Leone,” Aminata says. “But this is something that I can change.”

In 2014, she formed the Aminata Maternal Foundation, a charity working in partnership with the Aberdeen Women’s Centre to provide maternal health services in Sierra Leone.

Last year, Aminata returned to the country of her birth, accompanied by two obstetricians, to meet with NGOs, including Marie Stopes, and with women supported by her fundraising.

“Many of them have completed their education, started small businesses, and become community advocates for change,” Aminata enthuses. “It was a privilege to meet them and hear their stories.”

One of those women is Mary, who became a mother at the age of 14 and had to leave

school, feeling hopeless about her future. Joining the Centre’s Dream Girls Program, Mary had access to counselling, health education and vocational training in tailoring. She now runs her own business, supporting herself and her child. “Mary’s a role model in her community,” Aminata says. “She is an advocate for girls’ education and speaks to young women about the importance of making informed choices. Most importantly, she’s raising her child in a stable and supportive environment.”

While celebrating these successes, Aminata remains focused on the urgent need for sustainable solutions to the maternity crisis.

“Women give birth in hospitals without running water and medical centres lack basic supplies,” she says. “We’re looking at longterm solutions: ambulances funded by corporate sponsors, ensuring their operation and maintenance; community-led maternal health programs where midwives educate

CHANGE MAKER

and empower local women; and initiatives that provide medical care and create jobs allowing families to build a better future.”

Back in Sydney, the AMF are hard at work organising their annual Bluff and Swagger Gala, a vibrant celebration of African culture. Held at the newly renovated Sofitel Wentworth in the CBD, guests will enjoy a three-course meal and drinks while being treated to an evening of music, dancing and fashion to help raise essential funds.

“Infant mortality is preventable,” Aminata concludes. “I encourage everyone to reach out to us. Whether through donations, raising awareness, or connecting resources, every action counts.”

“We have the wealth and care here in Australia. It’s up to us to use it and make real change. We can all be part of changing these statistics.” ● Read more about Aminata’s story in her 2020 memoir, Rising Heart, Pan Macmillan.

ART AND ABOUT

Illustrator Serena Geddes, left, with a small selection of the 70 books she has created artworks for, including cricket captain, Pat Cummins’ children’s stories.

Drawing inspiration

Local children’s illustrator Serena Geddes brings stories to life

In quiet Kurraba Point, where the harbour sparkles and history whispers, illustrator Serena Geddes has found her creative home. With over 70 illustrated picture and middle-grade books to her name, including collaborations with Australian icons like actor Ada Nicodemou and cricket captain Pat Cummins, Serena has inked herself as an artistic force in children’s publishing.

“I always had a big imagination as a child,” she says. “I hated reading books though. If they didn’t have pictures, I just wasn’t interested!”

Serena’s childhood love of art paid off when she saw a job advertised for Walt Disney Studios in Sydney.

There were 800 applicants for the role and Serena was one of eight illustrators who were appointed. “We were hand drawing 24 frames

for a second of film,” she remembers. “I got a lot of experience in drawing quickly!”

Working on movies including The Lion King II and The Little Mermaid II, Serena spent six years at the studio before moving into office roles at creative agencies.

“I was working reception and doing admin,” she recalls. “I didn’t really have the confidence to start illustrating full time on my own. I didn’t even know how that was possible.”

A chance meeting with a former Disney colleague, who’d started illustrating books, inspired her to take that first step.

“I found books with illustrations that were similar to my style and I’d approach the publishing houses,” Serena says. “I faced a lot of rejections but I knew I only needed that one yes…” That yes came in 2009 from a small publishing house that needed a

children’s book illustrated which had a giraffe as a character. “I just happened to have a giraffe in my portfolio!” Serena laughs.

That first job led to seven more books, and a rapidly growing portfolio.

Fast forward 15 years, and Serena’s work can be found on bookshelves around the country. From picture books to middle-grade novels, her illustrations are known for their lively characters and emotional depth. Her first graphic novel, Ella Forever, is set for release in May 2025 as part of the Ella Diaries franchise. “It’s been a journey,” Serena says. “Challenging myself to try something new has been both terrifying and exhilarating.”

While Serena has illustrated for some of the biggest names in publishing, she remains deeply connected to her community. Her creative wellness workshops, where she helps adults rediscover artistic expression, have become a passion project. “We’re all born creative,” she says. “But somewhere along the way, many people stop exploring it.” Her workshops encourage participants to leave perfectionism at the door and simply enjoy the process. “People often say, ‘I can’t draw,’ but I love showing them that creativity is for everyone. It’s about expression, not perfection, and some of my best drawings have come from making mistakes.”

Find more out about Serena and her art workshops at serenageddes.com. For her Nutcote sessions go to maygibbs.com.au

Perhaps the most poetic twist in Serena’s story is her work at Nutcote, the historic home of beloved Australian children’s author and illustrator, May Gibbs. Best known for her picture books and comics, as well as the characters of Snugglepot and Cuddle Pie, Gibbs lived and worked at Nutcote, which is just around the corner from Serena’s apartment in Kurraba Point.

Every month, and on special occasions such as Mother’s Day, Serena leads painting workshops at the house.

“It’s a very special feeling being there,” she says. “May Gibbs was ahead of her time as a creative. I think she’d be happy to know people are at Nutcote being inspired. It’s a real gift for me and I’m really proud to be a very small part of a place that’s so significant. ”

Serena’s work at Nutcote feels like a bridge between past and present. Just as May Gibbs once brought Australian flora and fauna to life with her whimsical illustrations, Serena is ensuring that Nutcote, and the books she works on, remain places of creativity and inspiration, where imaginations can flourish.

“I think it’s wonderful to leave something behind that will keep going after you,” she says. “It’s more than just drawing, it’s inspiring others to see the world in a new way.” ●

NUTCOTE 100 YEARS OF

The historic home of children’s author and illustrator, May Gibbs, is marking its centenary with a year of celebrations

Located at the Kurraba Point end of Neutral Bay, Nutcote was the home of May Gibbs from 1925 until her death in 1969. It was here that she wrote and illustrated many of her best-loved stories, including The Complete Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and the Bib and Bub comic strips. May and her husband, James Kelly, moved into Nutcote on Sunday 2 January and this year marks the 100 year anniversary of the home, which was custom built for the couple to include her home studio.

Nutcote garden with one of her beloved Scottish Terriers

Designed by architect B.J. Waterhouse, May Gibbs envisioned a home that was ‘compact, convenient, and full of charm.’

May left the home to UNICEF in her will but the organisation was unable to hold the property under its charter and it was sold at public auction in 1970. There was a suggestion new owners would demolish the house and develop the site which caused concerned locals to form the May Gibbs Foundation and start the ‘Save Nutcote for the Nation’ campaign. They were successful and North Sydney Council purchased Nutcote for $2.86 million in 1990. Now protected by a permanent conservation order, the house was restored to how it would have looked in the 1920s and 30s and has been open to the public since 1994. l

An enduring legacy

For 100 years, Nutcote has stood as a symbol of May’s creativity and connection to the natural world and is open to the public Wed-Sun, 11am-3pm. See maygibbs.com.au for more info on the 100th Anniversary celebrations.

Eugene, Jo-Ann and their four children live in North Sydney and are well known in the area. “We see the pets we treat at the park, in cafés, on their daily walks…that’s what makes this so special,” Jo-Ann continues. “There’s no greater joy than hearing, ‘Look, it’s your vet!’ as a dog runs to say hello. We’re proud to be their friends too. “ Fear Free, Stress-Free Vet Care and Grooming Beyond providing gold-standard veterinary care, the Pet Medical Milsons Point team ensures each visit, including grooming and vet care, is as stress-free as possible for pets and their owners. Discover effective physiotherapy-led strength training programs designed for every body at Kieser Cammeray, Mosman and Pymble

Founded in 1966 by Werner Kieser in Switzerland, Kieser set out with a clear mission: to address health issues caused by a lack of strength by applying the core principles grounded in Exercise Science. Combining physiotherapy with strength and conditioning, Kieser helps people of all ages to manage injuries, pain, and chronic health conditions. Programs can be designed for recovery, sports performance or to help clients stay active and independent.

So whether you’re recovering from an injury, looking to get active or want to future-proof your body, Kieser’s physiotherapy-led programs ensure that strength training is safe, effective and tailored to your needs.

Why

Strength Training Matters

After the age of 30, adults naturally lose 3-5% of muscle mass, strength and function per decade - a rate that accelerates after age 60. This can lead to decreased mobility,

“Strength training is one of the most effective ways to counteract the decline of muscle mass and can help to support a healthy and independent life,” explains Hamish McConnell, NSW Regional Leader at Kieser. “By engaging in resistance training, you can maintain muscle, improve bone density and enhance joint stability as well as balance, keeping you active for years to come.”

A LOCAL

classique

Forget the long-haul flight and say bonjour to the taste of France in Waverton at Le Coq & Fish

From the mouthwatering aroma of garlic and butter to the clink of wine glasses and warm chatter of guests, there’s nothing quite like the inviting charm of a local bistro in France.

With its welcoming ambiance and a passion for good food and hospitality, the northside’s very own neighbourhood bistro, Le Coq & Fish, is a local gem where meals are made to be savoured and dishes bring a joie de vivre to every bite.

“IT’S SOMEWHERE YOU CAN GO FOR A GOOD STEAK AND A GLASS OF WINE WITH FRIENDS”

A bistro with heart and heritage

Owner Loic Le Gallou, a Waverton local for over a decade, brings a taste of his beloved France to the northside community.

Originally from Poitiers, Loic fondly recalls sharing homemade meals made from fresh, seasonal produce sourced from his grandfather’s farm. “Food brought the family together,” he reminisces. “Le Coq & Fish is our home, our memories...everything in the bistro has significance and brings me back home every time I open the door.”

“A bistro in France is an informal, neighbourhood eatery,” Loic continues. “It’s somewhere you can go for a good steak and a glass of wine with friends, where it feels like you’re in someone’s home. It’s uncomplicated food - like your mum

classique

or grandma would make - with good ingredients and generous portions. You eat and enjoy!”

The Menu Formule – c’est magnifique!

One of the pièces de résistance of Le Coq & Fish is the Menu Formule, a fixed-price option that’s traditionally found in bistros across France. Diners can opt to select an entrée, a main and dessert combination from a selection of classic dishes, making for a beautifully curated dining experience and a great value meal.

Chef Romano, who co-owns Le Coq & Fish with Loic, heads up the kitchen, and is an expert in creating deliciously authentic dishes. For entrées, expect a selection that could include French onion soup topped with a thick crouton and melted cheese; escargots doused in garlic butter or a fluffy twice baked cheese soufflé.

For mains think perfectly cooked eye fillet steak with fries and herby Paris butter, slow cooked duck confit with French lentils and a

Roulé de Porc with pork belly crackling, red cabbage and Cognac sauce. And don’t forget to leave space for dessert! Sweet treats include a generous slice of their epic tarte tatin, a scoop of housemade mousse or a wedge of creamy Basque baked cheesecake. A celebration of tradition

With Loic’s family photos adorning the walls and a menu brimming with je ne sais quois, Le Coq & Fish is a celebration of tradition, community and the simple joy of a great meal shared with loved ones. Now serving dinner Tues-Sun as well as brekkie and lunch from Fri-Sun, you can experience a taste of France throughout the week. “Come and enjoy a good meal with good people, the French way!” Loic encourages. Bon appetit! l

IT’S PIE TIME!

Local foodie, TV presenter and cookbook author

Will Stewart serves up Autumn on a plate

I’ve always loved shepherd’s pie, and with just a little extra effort, this classic comfort dish can be transformed into a true showstopper. While the cooking time may seem long, most of it is hands-off, letting the oven work its magic on the irresistable tender lamb while you entertain, tackle some chores, or even sneak out for a cheeky schooner (I’ve been loving the Sunday live music at the Mosman Rowers!). You can stick with a classic mashed potato topping, but I’d highly recommend giving this version a try. Enjoy!

Lots of love Will x

WILL’S SHEPHERD’S PIE

SERVES: 6-8

TAKES: 4.5 HOURS (BUT WORTH IT!)

INGREDIENTS:

2 brown onions, diced

2 carrots, peeled and diced

2 celery sticks, diced

4 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped

1 bunch of fresh mint, leaves picked and finely chopped

2 sprigs of fresh rosemary, leaves picked and finely chopped

METHOD:

2 cups of peas

4 bay leaves

4 lamb shanks

4 tbsp of plain flour

500ml good quality chicken or vegetable stock

3 large potatoes, halved lengthways and very thinly sliced

25g butter, melted

Olive oil

Salt and pepper

• Over a medium high heat, add some olive oil to a heavy based, oven proof pot with a lid. Fry the onions, carrots and celery until they being to colour then add the garlic. Cook for a further two minutes then remove from the heat. Mix through the chopped mint, rosemary, peas and bay leaves and set aside.

• In a large bowl, add the flour and season with salt and pepper. Toss the lamb shanks in the flour mixture until they are evenly coated.

• Heat some olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat then fry the floured and seasoned lamb shanks in batches until golden all over.

• Pre-heat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius. Transfer the lamb shanks to the oven proof pot. Pour over the stock, cover with the lid and cook in the oven for three hours.

• Remove the lamb from the oven and allow to cool before shredding the meat from the bones. Discard the bones and the bay leaves and increase the oven temperature to 190 degrees Celsius.

• Transfer the mixture to a baking dish then layer over the potatoes at an angle until you cover the whole dish. Brush with some melted butter and season with salt and pepper. Bake in the oven for one hour or until the potatoes are golden brown.

• Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving with seasonal vegetables of your choice.

MADE WITH amore

The beloved Ezzelino family bid a heartfelt arrivederci to Neutral

Bay

After over 40 years of serving up pizza and pasta perfection to the northside community, much-loved family-run Italian restaurant, Ezzelinos, is set to start a new chapter.

The legendary Mr and Mrs Ezzelino, along with the restaurant’s current team of daughter Aly and her chef husband Oz, and the rest of the family, have decided it’s time for a well-deserved break from the kitchen. Thankfully, northsiders will still be able to enjoy the classic taste of Italian hospitality that Ezzelinos is famous for, as the family are passing stewardship of the Military Road restaurant to trusted friends and team members, Christine and Christian.

“They’ve long been part of Ezzelinos and are carrying forward the traditions and values that have defined us,” Aly says. “We’re confident they’ll continue to create memories and serve this amazing community with the same dedication. We can’t wait for everyone to meet them.”

The iconic Ezzelinos has been a local go-to

“CONVERSATIONS START OVER FOOD AND WE’VE SEEN FIRST DATES TURN INTO MARRIAGES”

for enjoying authentic Italian feasts and making memories since it first opened its doors in 1982.

“Back then Malcolm Fraser was prime minister, smoking was still allowed in restaurants and the Harbour Bridge toll was only 20 cents!” laughs Aly who, along with husband Oz, took over the running of the restaurant from her parents in 2000. “Dad always says nothing beats the 80s. We’d have politicians having dinner next to locals families and celebrities would come and shout everyone drinks. It was a fun and wild time.”

While the world has changed in countless ways, Ezzelinos has remained constant as a place where everyone feels like famiglia. But, of course, no Italian eatery is without its debates.

“Dad put his foot down for years about pineapple on pizza,” Aly says. “But in the early ‘90s, he finally caved! Our ham and pineapple pizza has been a best seller ever since.”

Aly’s father, originally from Caserta, north of Naples, arrived in Australia in 1969. He met her mother working at the Leyland Motor Company and when that closed in 1982, their restaurant dream took shape.

For decades, Aly’s parents dedicated themselves to serving lunch and dinner seven

days a week, creating not just a restaurant, but a home away from home.

The 90s saw the restaurant cement itself on the local dining scene. Queues would snake down the road, with people all eager to experience an Ezzelinos night out.

“The restaurant wasn’t in the Yellow Pages, it was known by word of mouth,” Aly remembers. “My parents could never quickly pop to the shops. They’d start chatting with regulars and end up being out for hours.”

More than just a dining destination, Ezzelinos became a place of connection.

“I always chat to customers and love connecting people,” says Aly, who met Oz when he started working in the kitchen with her father. “Conversations start over food and we’ve seen first dates turn into marriages and life-long friendships forged over plates of our pasta.”

As Aly and the family sign off, they do so with love and gratitude, knowing their legacy of good food and friendship will continue to bring northsiders together for years to come.

“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of our journey,” Aly says. “Ezzelinos will always hold a special place in our family. We’ve laughed and cried together, and you’ve chosen to celebrate your milestones, share meals with loved ones and make memories at our tables. We’re so proud of the lifelong friendships we’ve built.”

While over four decades have passed since Ezzelinos opened and kids now play on iPads at the tables instead of Rubik’s Cubes, the heart of the restaurant remains a constant. “Some things...like the joy of sharing a good meal with loved ones...they will never change," Aly concludes. ●

Ted the Puggle chats to six-year-old Pickle the Bichon Frise about his work as a Story Dog at Anzac Park Public School Cammeray

‘They get better and better each week!’

TED: Hi Pickle! I’ve heard that you’re a Story Dog, offering a supportive paw to children learning to read. How did you get into this line of work?

PICKLE: I started as a Story Dog at Anzac Park Public School a few terms ago. One of my best Bichon friends, Ziggy, is a Story Dog in Cairns so I had to give it a go too.

T: What training did you have to do?

P: Story Dogs is a non-profit organisation that places suitable dogs into primary schools with the goal of helping year two students who are struggling with literacy. When students get a chance to read to a dog like me without judgment or criticism, confidence and enjoyment around reading soars. While I’m super well trained thanks to

my mum being a dog trainer, I didn’t need to learn any special skills to be a Story Dog other than to lie on my rug, enjoy the company of kids and be a good dog.

T: What do you do in a day at school?

P: I have a spot in the library where students come one at a time to read to me. I sit quietly next to them, or on their laps, and they can pat me which helps them relax. At the end of each session, my mum lets the students get me to do tricks which I love. I think they like it too because they’re always smiling.

T: What do you like best about work?

P: I like seeing the students get more and more excited when they come to read to me. They get better and better each week!

T: What’s your favourite book so far?

P: I love “Picking Pickle” by Polly Faber, which is a story about a dog in a pound that gets picked out of all the other dogs to live with a new family. They named him Pickle like me!

T: Are people surprised to see you at school? I bet you get lots of pats!

P: People often compliment me on my striking good looks but my mum tells me not to let it go to my already big head.

T: I saw you also worked as a Delta Therapy Dog - visiting places like hospitals and aged care facilities to share some puppy love. Why do you think you’re so good at helping people?

Above, me with my paw-rent Mali; and right; with some of the books I read with the children at school.

P: Bichons like me are natural people pleasers. We love attention and cuddles and we’re also very smart and sociable.

My mum, Mali, has been a professional dog trainer and behaviourist for almost 20 years and has helped a lot of different organisations. I’m one of her own three dogs and we all help her hone her skills and provide assistance when working with clients. My mum also accompanies me when I get hired to do TV and advertising work through my agency Animal Talent Time.

T: What do you love to do on your time off?

P: Right now my absolute favourite thing to do is cuddle up to my mum on the sofa at the end of the day.

T: Are you allowed treats, if so what are your faves? Mine’s carrots. And cheese, I love cheese!

P: I get a lot of treats, especially when my mum is teaching me a new trick or skill, but my favourite treat is cheese as well! It’s so yummy.

T: What’s your favourite doggie friendly spot on the lower north shore?

P: My mum does outdoor fitness at Cammeray Park and I’ll go along with her. I love it there. Afterwards, we’ll head to the lovely Ellie May’s Nook, also in Cammeray for coffee (for Mum) and cuddles (for me!). ●

Fun Facts About Dogs!

Dogs are full of surprises! From their hilarious zoomies to their uncanny ability to know exactly when it’s dinner time, our four-legged friends have some fascinating quirks. But did you know that yawns can be contagious for dogs too?

Or that their noses are as unique as human fingerprints? Here are some fun facts that make dogs even more amazing!

Dogs can “catch” yawns from humans

Ever yawned and noticed your pup yawning right after? Dogs are one of the few animals that exhibit contagious yawning, a behaviour linked to empathy. It’s their way of bonding with you.

A dog’s nose print is as unique as a fingerprint

To see more of Pickle’s adventures go to Instagram @picklethebichon or @malithedogtrainer

Just like human fingerprints, a dog’s nose print is completely unique. The patterns of ridges and creases make it a natural identifier - imagine if they could unlock phones with a nose boop!

Dogs have an amazing sense of time

They can’t read clocks, but dogs have an internal body clock. They use scent cues, routines and even the sun’s position to know when it’s dinner time or when you’re coming home. What’s the quirkiest thing your dog does?

A specialist family law firm,

Stay in control

When I first meet a new client, many of them want to go straight to Court believing that trying to negotiate anything with their ex will be hopeless.

But why would you relinquish decisions about your financial security and parenting arrangements to a judge who doesn’t know anything about your family at all?

Although negotiating with your ex may pose some challenges, especially if there’s a power imbalance between you or you’ve been subjected to family violence (including coercive control), it is without doubt a better way to deal with your family court matter. Why?

• You maintain control of the outcome.

• You decide what you can live with and what you can’t.

• Alternate forms of dispute resolution are immeasurably cheaper than a litigation pathway.

• Your children can have their own voice in this process.

• You might even salvage a relationship with your ex so you can collaboratively parent going forward.

Most of my matters are resolved in lawyer assisted mediations, saving my clients 10s of 1000s of dollars and years of angst and stress, being unavoidable pitfalls of a court process.

So, if you’re about to embark on a family law dispute, talk to your lawyer about options outside Court. It will be a conversation well worth having!

2025… OPPORTUNITIES A YEAR OF

For the first time in a while, 2025 brings some clear certainties, making it an easier year for forward planning. Three key factors are:

• The election in the first half of the year.

• Interest rates starting to fall.

• Housing affordability remaining a national challenge.

Voting for opportunity

Elections often cause hesitation in the property market. Buyers and sellers tend to adopt a “wait and see” approach, worried about potential policy changes. But history tells us that, for most people, elections don’t drastically alter every day life. That means while others delay decision making, there may be a prime opportunity to secure a property before competition picks up again. Interest rates - time to make your move?

Inflation has been a hot topic with two key figures emerging: one in the low 2% range and another in the low 3% range. The difference is caused by a temporary government rebate on energy bills, set to end around the election. The Reserve Bank has indicated that unless such support continues indefinitely, inflation will likely settle in the 3% range, which in turn impacts interest rate decisions. One thing’s almost certain

though, and that’s rates are not going to go up again. This stability means you can start to plan ahead with more confidence.

Housing affordability - a market shift With rates starting to go down and home loan repayments reducing, the cost of housing remains a significant challenge. Prices aren’t likely to fall, but the market is showing signs of reaching an affordability ceiling. Buyers may find themselves in a stronger negotiating position - at least for now. But as interest rates fall, more people will be able to afford the property you want, potentially pushing prices back up. In short, this window of opportunity won’t last forever! We’re here to help

Celebrate North Sydney Leagues Club’s 70th anniversary with these images from over the years... >> Since 1955, Norths has been at the heart of the local community. Keep an eye on norths.com.au and @northscammeray on the socials for upcoming birthday fun at the club to mark this milestone.

MOMENTS IN TIME

The Mighty Bears with ‘Queen of NRL’ Tina Turner during her 1990 visit to Australia.

Norths Chief Executive Officer and club member/team member for 28 years My parents were members of Norths and I first came to the club with them when I was a child. I started my career with the Mighty Bears in the ’90s, working in ticketing and merchandising. Over the years, I gained experience across all areas of the club, while studying, which has led me to my role as CEO. Norths is more than just a venue, it’s a place of connection, stability and opportunity for our community. I’m especially proud of our partnerships with Qantas Pathfinders and Next Sense, a not-for-profit which supports people with hearing or vision loss, as well as our annual Stars of the North Cancer Council event, where I overcame my fear of dancing in front of 400 people for a fantastic cause. Looking ahead, in addition to always being the home of the Mighty Bears (who will be back in the NRL!) Norths will continue evolving to meet the needs of our community. Our commitment is to be more than a great local club. We’re driven by purpose, community and connection.

Happy birthday!

I

t’s many happy returns to Norths Cammeray! The club has been a cornerstone of the northside community since its establishment in 1955, when it was known as the North Sydney Leagues Club. Founded to support the North Sydney Bears rugby league team, the club was originally located in a residential property on Merlin Street in Neutral Bay before relocating to its current premises on Abbott Street in 1964. Seven decades on from accepting its first members, Norths

remains a vital part of the Lower North Shore, offering premium dining, live entertainment and first-class facilities. More than just a club, it has grown into a thriving social, leisure, entertainment and fitness hub, all while maintaining a strong community focus by supporting local charities, special interest groups and grassroots sports. As well as being home to The Mighty Bears, today Norths is home to its members, who say it feels like family. Here's to the next 70 years! ●

American comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld visited Norths in ‘98 to watch the NBA grand finals on the club’s big screen.

Margaret Kroboth

Norths’ Life Member and club member for over 40 years The last 40 years of being a member of Norths has been an amazing, crazy and wonderful period in my life. It’s been a time of happiness and many keepsake memories. I’ve met a lot of people over the years, I’ve made friends and connections and there’s lots of laughs. I’m so thankful to Norths for giving me Life Membership, the first to happen in 25 years. I’m the first ever female to receive it too! I’ve had friends tell me I’ve paved the way for the girls so it’s definitely a wow moment.

Robert Lopez

Norths Chief Marketing & Innovation Officer and club member/team member for 13 years Norths is more than just a place of work for me - it’s a community, a legacy and a place where I can connect people to create meaningful experiences every day. Being part of the ClubGRANTS process, which supports community organisations through funds, is very special. I’ve spent a lot of time working with Learning Links, an organisation we’ve supported for over a decade, and seeing the outcomes they deliver to children in our local schools is extremely fulfilling.

Pamela Verey

Club member for 30 years

My dad was one of the club’s first members, his membership number was #3! Norths is a part of my heritage, it’s like my second home. I have lots of friends at the club and seeing Margaret recognised as the first women to be awarded a life membership was very special. CEO Luke hosted a dinner and gave a speech which was lovely. The staff really make the whole club experience. They are a wonderful team and so caring.

How a local creative collective is redrawing the art world

St Leonards based creative collective, Studio A, is once again painting on to the national art scene with member Thom Roberts’ first solo exhibition opening at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra this April. A vibrant showcase of Roberts’ signature style, where intricate cityscapes, bold colours and larger-than-life portraits transport viewers into his dynamic mind, The Immersive World of Thom Roberts, contains 100 works which span his prolific, decade-long career to date. Visitors will discover a wall of emotion cards, sculptural cityscapes, a performative work of a ping pong game that examines the power dynamics of the courtroom, and a major new work that invites the audience to consider the world through the artist’s eyes. Included in the show is one of Roberts’ favourite works, a special portrait of his mentor and friend, lawyer Shane Simpson AM, the former Chair of Studio A, who Thom calls Adam. “He is my big brother, my friend Adam,” Thom says of the >>

piece, which he originally created for the 2021 Archibald Prize.

Brushing aside barriers

Studio A was established in 2014 as a subsidiary of Studio ARTES, a not-for-profit organisation that provides creative programs for adults with disabilities. Under the leadership of CEO and Artistic Director Gabrielle Mordy, the northside studio helps talented artists with intellectual disabilities gain public recognition, secure mentorships and commercialise their work. “The biggest obstacle we have is the perception that artists with disability can only do art therapy,”

“WE WORK TO ENSURE OUR CULTURE AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS INCLUDE THE VOICE OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY”

says Gabrielle. “When people buy work from our artists, they’re not making a donation - they’re investing in a valuable, collectible piece.”

The team also manages the artists’ resumes, applies for awards and grants on their behalf and organises commissions. Over the years, their work has included large scale corporate installations and urban art projects, coffee cup artworks for Biopak, tableware for MUD Australia, fabric design for fashion label Romance Was Born and public hoardings throughout Sydney.

“We work hard to ensure our culture and cultural institutions include the voice of people with disability,” Gabrielle continues.

“Making art makes me feel happy and proud and terrific,” Thom adds. “I like being an artist, until I become a very old man in the future.”

Portrait of an artist

Roberts’ practice is a sustained act of world building and storytelling. In his work, and in

his life, people are bestowed new identities and exist as multiple personas. Roberts himself identifies as the Country Link Express train and the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai. His portraits don’t just depict faces, they reveal identities - often layering subjects with extra eyes, noses, and his signature, piano teeth. Animals, cities, Sesame Street characters and references to fast food chains feature in his imagery, as do Roberts’ personal experiences, such as managing anxiety.

His distinctive paintings have been widely exhibited, from appearing at Carriageworks, which Thom calls his “Giant Castle”, where his work made up a major part of The National: New Australian Art in 2019, to the Archibald Prize, where his portraits have been shortlisted as finalists for four consecutive years. His most recent entry featured fellow northside artist, Ken Done, or “Big Bamm Bamm,” as Thom calls him. Roberts was also a finalist in the 2024

The art of inclusion

As well as Studio A’s ongoing commissions, a range of new design collabs and public artworks is being sketched out for 2025. An education program designed to connect primary school students with Studio A will also launch soon, providing a chance for young creatives to draw inspiration from Thom and his fellow artists.

“We are beyond proud to see Thom’s talent recognised at the National Portrait Gallery,” Gabrielle says. “Studio A is all about supporting artists with intellectual disability to reach their potential as creative leaders and ensuring the art world includes diverse voices,” she concludes. “We exist because these artists make great art.” l
