Principal’s Message

We have concluded an amazing year of flourishing through the provision of Christian Education at Northside Christian College. This week, at our Celebration events, we gave thanks to God for all the blessings we have received as a community this year. Throughout the year, it was so special to observe our students flourish with their learning, wellbeing, knowledge of God’s character, and understanding of their purpose in life. We are grateful for the families in our community who work in close partnership with the College. Thank you to our staff for their dedication in supporting our students to at Northside to be transformed through Christ and the wonder of learning.
At Northside, we have an overarching theme every year that guides us as a College community in developing a deeper understanding of the character of God. This year, the College theme was Flourish. We have reflected on how we have been created in the image of God, made for his handiwork. God has an incredible purpose for all of us and desires us to live life to the fullest.
Our theme verse for the year reminded us to be grounded in Christ. Colossians 2:6-7 encourages us:
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
We are grateful to God for the growth of our College and the opportunity to flourish together this year.
It is my prayer that our College community can enjoy a lovely Christmas, a restful break, and a safe holiday. May the time you share as a family over this Christmas and holiday period be filled with much joy and peace. I hope we all intentionally find time to pause to reflect during this busy time of the year. It is important to take time to appreciate once again the gift of God’s Son, Jesus. May we receive the joyful news with all of our hearts.
For those families leaving the College for various reasons, we pray that the Lord will watch over you in your future endeavours and continue to bless you. I also pray that all staff and students return in 2023 refreshed and ready to take on what promises to be an exciting year.

For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6.
“
“God has an incredible purpose for all of us and desires us to live life to the fullest.”

Remembrance Day Ceremony at Watsonia RSL

Our Primary School Captains, Levi and Atara, as well as Primary Noble Knights Captain, Jack, participated in the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Watsonia RSL on Friday 11th November. Levi and Atara laid a wreath on behalf of the College community to mark the conclusion of WWI hostilities. Jack, along with his family, Mr Simmons and Ms Vaughn then attended a special ceremony upstairs at the RSL, where Jack was awarded the RSL Citizenship Award for his contribution to our community. Jack emulates the College value of Service in and around our College community, demonstrating a servant-hearted leadership at all times. The RSL has contributed $200 to support Jack as he graduates to Year 6 in 2022. Well done and congratulations, Jack.

Prep Fire Incursion
When the fire fighters came over we looked at photos of good fires and bad fires. We saw a photo of a girl cooking with a grown up then we saw a girl cooking with her friends. The next week we got to look at the fire truck and we got to use the hose.

Sibella, Prep N
Prep C
One day the firefighters came to Northside. My favourite one was going into the fire truck and then we had a fun time spraying water.

Lowson, Prep C
On the firefighter visit, we did water spraying and we did climbing, into the fire truck. I saw buttons that control the fire trucks.
Jovan, Prep C
“I got to squirt the hose when the firefighters came. I felt happy.”

Year 5 & 6 Bizarre Bazaar

For the 5 and 6’s class Term 4 Inquiry project, students participated in the ‘Bizarre Bazaar’ event. They were required to make products, design stalls, create advertisements and sell their items to the primary students. The 5/6 students researched products similar to the ideas that they had in mind, and conducted surveys to make their product the best they could be. Students also learnt methods such as SCAMPER to upgrade and improve their products. On Friday the 18th November, all of the 5 and 6 students sold their products in front of the new Middle School building. Some of the items that were sold at the Bazaar were candles, lava lamps, bracelets, tie dye shirts, bookmarks and stress balls. Students from other grades came and bought these items with real money! Some groups were sold out in the first 10 minutes and others were busy selling all of lunch. We were excited to see that every group was successful, making more money that they had spent creating them and all up, we made over $1,000! All the proceeds have been donated to the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child fund to help send off over 200 boxes to other countries and share the joy of Christmas and the Good News that it brings.
Year 5/6G

So many students purchased the items our Year 5 & 6’s had for sale.

Year 5 & 6 Futsal Day
Some of our Year 5 and 6 students recently took part in a Futsal Day. It was raining but it didn’t stop the students from using team work and courage to score goals and have fun at The Fustal at Knox Football Centre.

Prep -
It was my first time going to a swimming carnival organised by the school. We did lots of fun activities like races, water aerobics, playing on the playground, water safety lessons and games. I enjoyed the carnival because I got to play with all of my friends. My favourite part was when I won races and went up to get my ribbons

Middle School Media

This term in Media students learnt about using film making and using camera equipment in our new film room in the middle building. They learnt how to use cameras, green screen, microphones, and editing equipment.

The students had a great time being creative in this new space.
Year 10 Maths
Maths is often thought to be just about numbers. In year 10 students learned it is about shape and design as well as connected to Science. This happened through the study of tessellation (tiling patterns) and a Maths/Science excursion to Scienceworks. All students enjoyed the activities and produced some wonderfully innovating designs.

Year 8 Geography Excursion: Urbanisation and Immigration

Earlier this term, the Year 8s were able to venture into the city to view it from above at the Melbourne Skydeck. We have been learning about Urbanisation and Sustainable cities. We have been asking the question, “How could we better design our cities to connect with the land, connect with the environment, and use God’s beautiful trees and greenery in a manner that cools down our city?”

We imagined if we were Melbourne’s designer, how might we make Melbourne more sustainable? We have then taken this idea into our classrooms and we have been creating a more sustainable city using technologies such as Minecraft and Lego to show our sustainable city.
We have also paid tribute to the Traditional Land Owners and built our city with the United Nations ‘Sustainable Development Goals,’ as our foundation.
We also visited the Melbourne Immigration Museum on the same day, to complete our studies on Migration. We were able to learn about the history of migration, the reasons for migration, and the stories people still tell about being a person of different skin colour or culture. We are all learning to come together and to value the gifts God gave us and our nationality and culture. It was good to be reminded that God created us all and that even though we are diverse we are still valuable and can be one under the headship of Jesus.
My personal favourite from this experience was the story of Nyadol Nyuon. She has become the Director of Victoria University’s Sir Zelman Cowen Centre advocating for social justice but began her life in Ethiopia. Being a young girl in a refugee camp she knew she wanted to become a lawyer. Now her cultural identity and life experience have shaped her and led her down the path she follows today.

The most valuable insight I took from her was this quote:
“As important as it is to have a sense of identity, it is also important to be prepared to lose an identity you have cultivated and nourished… For a long time I was that 14 year old girl in a refugee camp thinking I was going to be a lawyer. And it took a bit of courage to say, now it’s time to let go of that identity and grow another.”
I think as Christians it is safe to say that we must allow the Holy Spirit to shape our identity to be more like Christ. We too must let go of the identities we create so we are able to be more like our Saviour. This takes bravery and courage. Often we think we know best and it is hard to let go of something that is part of who we are but unless this comes from God, we must let go. What a brave woman!
Mrs Sharon Simic Secondary Teacher
Year 9: Christian Life Studies
This Semester the Year 9 students have been looking at Christian organisations and how God has called certain people to live out their faith and to serve others. We looked at The Red Cross, St Vincent De Paul, Samaritans Purse, and The Salvation Army, to name a few. We discovered that all of these men and women saw a need and were compelled by the Spirit to move according to scripture and obey the teaching of Christ:
Matt 25:40
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Following this learning, it was natural for the Year 9 students to try and live out their faith in the same manner here at Northside. We discovered that the Holy Spirit equips us for service and that it is God himself who gives us the gifts we need to serve Him and serve others.

Some students found this quite challenging as it meant moving out of the comfort of a classroom and out seeking how they could help others. Whilst other students flourished in this role. But we all learned.
The Year 9 student’s taught the Year 1 students about being kind and the Year 4 students about following Jesus through the story of Jonah. The Prep students learnt about using God’s provisions sustainably by teaching them how to use scrap paper.

Some student’s cleaned up the school and were surprised about the amount of work our maintenance team do to clean the school up.
Other students assisted Jared to teach Year 5 & 6 boys how to work together in problem solving activities using Lego.
Teaching these young men and women to follow Christ has been a blessing. We are very privileged at Northside Christian College to be able to mould our children to be more like Christ, to give them a safe place to explore Jesus and the Word and to develop their God given talents to serve others.
Sharon Simic Secondary Teacher
This term for Christian Life Studies the Year 9 students have been learning about family, community and what it means to them? As a result in the second half of Term 4 they have been working on a project called ‘Giving back to the community’. They were allocated to groups to carry out different activities. Some of the activities included:
1. Donate a dollar and guess the number of lollies in the jar (all proceeds went towards Samaritan’s Purse.

2. An activity on Trust and Responsibility - This activity was run with the 7G students - They were divided into groups of two to three and given a balloon that was blown up and they had to guard it till the end of the day without popping it
3. Writing a Christmas card to a teacher that influenced them the most.
4. Talk about stranger danger to the 7G students.

Year 11 Biology: Melbourne Zoo Excursion

This term, in Unit 2 AOS2 the Year 11 Biology students have been learning about the adaptations and survival of various plants and animals. To further enhance their understanding, we visited the Melbourne Zoo and learnt the structural, behavioural and physiological adaptations of various animals. In particular, we had the opportunity to attend a workshop and learn in detail about the adaptations of the Corroboree Frog and Butterflies.
In Biology, we have been learning about the adaptations of various animals and how that enables them to survive in different climates. On the 25th October, we got the opportunity to visit the Melbourne Zoo and speak with the education coordinator who taught us in detail about the adaptations of the Corroboree Frog and butterflies. It was a fun and engaging day where we did some learning and explored the Zoo.
Jasleen, Year 11
Year 10: Science and Careers Virtual Reality Incursion

This term, the Year 10 Science students have been learning about Earth and Space. On 28th October, the students had the incredible experience of taking part in a virtual reality (VR) experience hosted by Mind Flight, where they learned about various career pathways in the STEM field while also exploring space adventures. This virtual reality activity was a lot of fun for the students. I would like to thank Mrs Waters for informing me of this opportunity.
Students used VR, many for the first time. It was an enjoyable hands on experience.

On the 28th October, the Year 10 Science class participated in a virtual reality (VR) experience hosted by Mind Flight. Their simulations were educational and fun. It involved VR experiences such as driving a car on Mars, a forklift simulator, an open heart surgery simulator and many more simulations. It helped us learn more about career pathways and was a fun twist that helped us learn more about space. Mind Flight also gave us an insight into what jobs looked like and what they would entail.
Noah, Year 10
On Friday 28th October, the class participated in a STEM Careers incursion where we got to experience a wide range of careers and space adventures through Virtual Reality. It was an insightful and enjoyable experience that I would like to do again. The people running the incursion were kind and gave us good advice on our future career pathways.
Justina, Year 10
Years 9 & 10 Environmental Science Elective Field Trip

On Thursday, 3rd November 3rd, the Year 9/10 Environmental Science Elective class undertook a field trip to 3 different locations along the lower Yarra River to collect water samples. The students had collaboratively designed the field work with the purpose of collecting the samples to test indicators of water quality at the 3 selected locations.

The day started with a bus trip to the Docklands area in Melbourne’s CBD where the first samples were collected, and some testing completed on site. Having safely stored the collected sample for further testing back in the science laboratories at college, the group re-boarded the bus and travelled to Fairfield Boathouse on the banks of the Yarra River near Alphington, repeating the water sampling and testing process. The final sample collection and testing was completed further up the river in Warrandyte at the river reserve parkland area. Despite the predominant heavy rain in the days leading up to the field trip, the weather was kind to the group on the day and the students were able to complete the collection and testing they had set out to accomplish.
In the days after the field trip itself, the group completed the required water quality tests in the lab, collated all data, then proceeded to complete a written report on their analysis and findings. The field trip was enjoyed by all students, many of whom expressed their appreciation of being able to apply the theoretical knowledge learned in class, to the real-world setting, at the river-side in a forest setting.

SchoolTV: Bullying
Bullying is an ongoing or repeated misuse of power in relationships, with the intention to cause deliberate psychological harm. Bullying behaviours can be verbal, physical or social. It can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious or hidden. Bullying in any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

Despite the efforts made to reduce bullying behaviours, the research tells us that one in four students still report being bullied every few weeks. However, not all negative behaviour should be considered bullying. The key difference is that bullying does not stop on its own. It’s important young people learn how to identify behaviours that are rude, behaviours that are mean, and behaviours that are related to bullying.

Often the reasons for bullying can be complex. Some young people do it to get approval from others, some do it to regain control, whilst others may do it because it makes them feel safe. Supporting young people as they work through their emotions will help them unpack the motivation and reason behind the behaviour
In this edition of SchoolTV, caregivers can better understand why some young people engage in bullying behaviours and what to do to support a child experiencing it. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

YWAM - Youth with a Mission

What a blessing it has been to be onsite together for the entirety of 2022! This year the Wellbeing team have had the privilege of introducing different programs and hosting many special guests to equip and empower our students to flourish into their God given potential and truly know their worth and value in their identity in Christ.
On the 24th to 28th of October, YWAM (youth with a mission) ran workshops for our Year 7 to 10 students. These were fun filled, interactive days where students had the opportunity to work together as groups on a range of activities and were given the opportunity to discuss important topics that impact their lives every day. These intensive days strengthened relationships and built further unity and positivity between students.

Year 7 and 9 had a focus on Passion, Perseverance and Purpose from a Christian perspective and worldview. YWAM discussed the different passions each student may have and the importance of perseverance in achieving their dreams. Students were encouraged that every individual is created for a God given purpose and it is through persevering with their passion that they can make a difference in the world.
Year 8 and 10 had a focus on Goals and Values and discussed how we measure success in our lives. During the program students were challenged to redefine success based on finding fulfilment in our value in Christ and the purpose He has created us for. Students learnt the value in living a balanced life - highlighting the power of action and spiritual discipline and the point that the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual areas in our life need to be balanced to aligned with each other
These days were a great success and enriched students and staff lives for the better. We are excited to continue to build on these principals unpacked as a College and believe the discussions will equip students to flourish for years to come.

The Wellbeing team are excited for 2023 and the opportunities we have in store to continue to empower and equip our students to become the people God has created them to be.

Northside Prayer Warriors
Dear Northside Community,
It has been an honour and a privilege to pray throughout 2022.
During this time we have seen so many wonderful blessings.
We have prayed for the safe arrival of four new babies from Ms. Cook, Mrs. Classons, Mr. Longley, and Mr. Gorfine.
We have been blessed to see students return to normal school activities, such as camps, excursions, sporting events, and music events.
We have prayed as the school has grown physically and work has been completed on time without any major hiccups and no safety issues.
We have prayed as teachers move in and out of the school, pick up extra classes and move into different roles over the course of the year. Everyone has been so supportive of each other and happy to lend a hand.

We have sought God’s blessings for our students, praying that they will become men and women who will share their faith with others and praise God.
This year God has woked within our school to do mighty and wonderful things that we cannot do on our own. Our prayers have also enjoyed the opportunity to pray.
“I was very grateful to see how our parents care for the school community and support staff through prayer!” Ell Cook
“It has been a privilege to praise God and intercede for the school and communities needs. It is encouraging to hear when Jesus answers prayers. The fellowship and praying together with like minded Christians is invaluable. Thank you for allowing me to be part of this. God bless NCC.” Jenny Masino
“It has been amazing to be part of a group that directly prays for the needs of the school and wider community. I am continually blessed and encouraged by the friendship and fellowship of the other members and by the answers to prayer that we have seen throughout the year. I am looking forward to more great things next year!”
Naomi Allen“I’m excited to get back into this group next year!!”

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9
Christmas is possibly my favorite time of year. For my family and I, it is a celebration of the birth of Jesus. A time where we gather together and celebrate the greatest gift the world will ever know. Some lyrics in the famous carol commonly sung at this time of year, Hark the Herald by Charles Wesley, say, ‘peace on earth and mercy mild’ and they also declare one of Jesus’ names, ‘Prince of Peace’. In a season where the word peace is used and declared so much by so many, we have the opportunity to share the gift of the Prince of Peace with the world.

A peacemaker is someone who is equipped to bring peace to conflict, restoration to damaged relationships and the hope of Jesus in difficult situations. Our nation needs the hope and restoration that Jesus gives. I encourage you all this Christmas, to be peacemakers, sharing the Prince of Peace with your community. Invite your children to do likewise, as they have learnt through the Peacewise curriculum this year. Be blessed as you walk in peace this Christmas.
Watch out for more PeaceWise language in 2023 as we continue to be a community that walks in peace with God and with others.

“
“Be blessed as you walk in peace this Christmas.”
We
From all of us at Northside Christian College we wish you and your family

Merry Christmas
pray your holiday’s are filled with joy as you celebrate the birth of Christ.
