Mr

Principal’s Message

At Northside, we place great value on building our sense of community. Our Strategic Plan: A Place to Flourish highlights “Strengthening School Community Connections” as a strategic priority for the College. I pray our students will embrace the many extracurricular activities available this term to support them to feel connected at Northside. Music, sports, debating, art, chapel, and other activities provide authentic opportunities for us to connect.

I am praying we have a wonderful term ahead as a College community.

Working together,

Congratulations to our students and staff on completing a wonderful term of learning at Northside Christian College. We are grateful to be able to provide a teaching and learning program that illuminates Christ while being passionately implemented within a Biblical worldview. Our students have enjoyed a term of diverse extracurricular activities, including interschool sports, debating, Book Week, Science Week, Careers Week, camps, excursions, guest speakers, and more. Thank you to our amazing staff, who planned and supported numerous learning activities for our students. We are grateful for our team of staff at Northside and the opportunity to deliver a rigorous Christian education.

Michael Bond Principal

Thank you to our College families for all your support during the past term. We are grateful for the dedication of our Parents and Friends Committee that hosted a pop-up canteen, Sushi Day, Father’s Day stall, and Finger Bun Fundraiser during Term 3. Our Parents Prayer Group has also continued to pray for our College community each week. Thank you also to the many parents who volunteered throughout the term, made costumes for Book Week, supported children with homework and learning instruments, and encouraged their children at school events including the musical. We are so thankful for your support.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

WEEK 6B: BOOK WEEK

Our College community relished the opportunity to view the performances of Shrek the Musical Jr. on the 4th and 5th of September. We thoroughly enjoyed four outstanding performances across the two days. This event was a lovely celebration of music, dance, and drama and culminated many hours of rehearsals. Congratulations to all students who performed and contributed to our school musical. Thank you to the staff who have supported this production over several months. We have observed strong connections developed across year levels as a product of these performances.

Prep Technology

This term, our Prep students have not only been dancing like mice in Shrek The Musical Jr, they have also been exploring robot mice in Technologies with Mr Harri. They programmed the mice using direction buttons and, after building little mouse houses using LEGO, they tackled the challenge of guiding the mice through a book maze by creating tracks and programming turns.

Year 2 Sleepover

The Year 2 Sleepover is always the event that every Year 2 student waits all year for! Either with excitement, nervousness or apprehension - the countdown began at the beginning of August! Students participated in teambuilding activities, watched the movie Charlotte’s Web (after studying in Term 3), and even got some sleep! For many of these students, it was the first time that they had ever slept somewhere else without a parent or loved one. Mrs MacDonald and Mrs Holden are extremely proud of all of our students for being brave and enjoying this great learning experience!

Year 6 Coin Operated Museum of Science Fundraiser

Recently the Upper Primary School Neighbourhood was transformed into the ‘Coin Operated Museum of Science’!

Our Year 6 students brought history to life as they stepped into the shoes of renowned scientists, inventors, artists, engineers, and environmentalists as part of our “Science as a Human Endeavour” unit. Each student showcased an influential figure, sharing how their work points to God, His creation or connects to His word.

We are incredibly proud of their presentations and creativity! A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event and contributed to the Operation Christmas Child postage fees. Thanks to your generosity, we raised an impressive $307.45!

Middle School World War 1 Incursion

During a recent incursion, Year 9 students encountered WWI artefacts and stories with ‘History Up Close’. Aaron, Jess, Samuel, and Maya were dressed in costumes, showing what regular coats were worn. The pants were displayed but far too big to wear.

Students handled money, bread, and bully beef; some tried the bully beef (similar to corn beef).

Robert, our presenter, asked, ‘Is it worth the sacrifice?’ No one could really answer the question, as we have learned that many of our freedoms are due to the sacrifices of those who have gone to war.

It was an excellent incursion, and everyone, including the teachers, learned something!

Mrs Sharon Simic Year 9 Coordinator

Congratulations, Aerynn!

Northside student, Aerynn, recently competed in the 2024 State/National Indoor Archery Championships where she finished 1st in both the State and National competition for Under 14s in Barebow Recurve. Aerynn is now ranked second in the National rankings by Archery Australia in the Under 14s category for Barebow Recurve.

Senior School Year 10 Boost Camp

From 14th - 16th of August, the Year 10 students went on a Boost Camp at the Upper Plenty Conference Centre. We participated in a range of activities, including Flying Fox, Outdoor Laser Tag, Tube Sliding, Geocaching, and Archery.

It was a great opportunity to forge new friendships and build on existing ones. It was also inspiring to see students and teachers moving out of their comfort zone when undertaking the flying fox and the rock wall.

On the first night, we enjoyed playing sports, such as basketball, and board games like Articulate. We also had the chance to hear from Skyline Education, who provided us with valuable study tips and strategies for navigating our senior years. On the second night, the Year 10 students participated in a game night, competing in their assigned groups in a series of challenges. It enabled us to interact with fellow Year 10 students that we wouldn’t generally have an opportunity to.

We are also extremely grateful for the provision of delicious food prepared by the hard-working cooks. The notable favourites were the hamburgers and the ice cream. The students also enjoyed the campfire, where we all hung out and roasted marshmallows. Another joyful aspect was engaging with our teachers outside of the structured school setting and witnessing their child-like enthusiasm participating in the activities!

On behalf of Year 10, we’d like to thank all involved in organising this wonderful camp for us. We would highly recommend and give it a 5 stars out of 5.

Year 9/10 Civics and Unit 2 Legal Studies: Melbourne Magistrates Court

Chinese

On 6th September, the Year 9/10 Civics elective and Unit 2 Legal Studies classes were blessed with the opportunity to attend and observe the working of the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Students were divided into small groups and quietly attended a multitude of different cases, giving them a better understanding of how the legal system works in Australia. Some students were even invited by the Magistrates to ask questions about what they had seen and learned! It was a wonderful experience, and food for much thought and discussion. We are so grateful for experiences that are available to us like this, and students were able to appreciate the importance placed on justice in our society.

Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

As part of our Year 6 Chinese curriculum, students explored the moon (science), learned about the famous legend of Chang’e, and delved into the culture of the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节). At the unit’s conclusion, students performed the song “May Only Life Be Long” (但愿人长久), adapted from the ancient poem “Water Melody” (水调歌头) by the Chinese poet Su Shi. Olivia from 6L played the Chinese instrument GuZheng, and Annabel from 5S accompanied her with a Chinese dance depicting Chang’e flying to the moon (嫦娥奔月). This song reflects people’s admiration for the moon and their desire for family reunions, emphasising hope for peace and blessings despite distances. This engaging lesson tied together science, culture, and folktale, providing students with a unique opportunity to learn about the moon while appreciating the rich traditions of Chinese culture. The unit concluded with students enjoying mooncakes, which deepened their cultural immersion.

Highlights from Book Week & Book Fair

Recently our community came together to celebrate the joy of reading by participating in Book Week events and our annual Book Fair. There were a range of activities held to make these events special.

Students were invited to come along with their friends to attend a ‘Dance Party’. This was inspired by the delightful book, ‘Bear and Duck are Friends,’ where Bear learnt how to overcome his fears and try new things. The younger students were excited to be in the Upper Primary School Neighbourhood space, dancing to a range of worship songs.

Another highlight was our ‘Chalk Art’ event. Although it initially rained, the sun came out later in the week and allowed our students to show off their creative talents, decorating our schoolyard with vibrant and colourful chalk drawings. This activity was inspired by the story ‘Concrete Garden.’ In the story children in grey apartments, came together to draw a large colourful chalk garden on the street, bringing smiles to all who saw it.

We ended our Book Week celebration with our yearly Book Week Dress Up Parade led by Mr John Longley and Mrs Sharon Simic. The parade was a joyous celebration and students dazzled in their costumes.

The Book Fair was also a resounding success, thanks to your support and participation. We are thrilled to announce that we successfully raised just over $1000, which will go directly toward purchasing new books for our library. This contribution will help us continue to expand our collection and provide students with even more opportunities to discover the joys of reading.

Our Library staff would like to say a big thank you to all the staff members, parents and students who participated in and supported these events.

Sport Year 2 Mini Hoop Time

On Thursday 22nd August, our Year 2 students had the exciting opportunity to participate in a Mini Hoop Time Day at Eagle Stadium in Werribee.

The entire Year 2 cohort was fully engaged in every aspect of the event, from skills training to the games, and even on the bench. They showed wonderful sportsmanship, supporting their teammates and cheering for classmates from other teams. They also looked out for one another, making sure everyone was okay if anyone fell or got bumped.

A big thank you to the teachers and parents who were instrumental in coaching and encouraging the students throughout the day. Your dedication and support helped make this event a success for everyone involved.

We are incredibly proud of the Year 2 students who participated. It was a fantastic day, filled with teamwork, fun, and memorable moments.

A Day at Hoop Time

On Thursday the Year 2s went on a bus to Hoop Time. When we got there we ate snacks and then we went to find our teenage coach with our parent helper. After that our coach George taught us how to dribble, shoot, do a layup and defend. Then we did some more training with one other team and played some mini matches. Once we finished the mini matches we all had lunch and then we started competing. First we played against one of our school teams and we lost and lost and lost and lost and lost!!! We lost all FIVE games! Although we lost, I still had FUN!

Clara, Year 2

CSEN Netball Championship Day

On Tuesday 20th August, the Year 5/6 Boys Netball team went to the State Sport Centre to play four fun and fair netball matches. In the first match we played Flinders Christian Community College. This match was a tough one with the score ending 8 goals to Northside and 5 goals to Flinders. In the second match, we played Covenant Christian College, where Northside scored 17 goals to Covenant’s 9 goals. This match was Josh T’s best game – that day he scored at least two-thirds of the goals.

Our next game was against Belgrave Heights Christian School – this was the match to see if we would get into the gold medal match. The score was 11 goals to Northside and 5 goals to Belgrave.

This win led us to the gold medal match. Everyone was very nervous prior to the game. This match was very intense with the referees were blowing whistle after whistle. In the end Northside had 13 goals and Flinders

had 5 goals. Northside was undefeated. The MVP was Josh T who scored a bunch of goals.

A big thank you to Mr Longley and Mr Zammit for coaching us to victory.

Pupus, Year 6

On 20th August, the Year 5/6 Girls Netball team had a great day at the CSEN Primary School Netball Championships! There were three other teams there. At first, we were a bit nervous, but once we got on the court and were able to play, we got more confident. Although we came 4th, we still had fun and tried our best. (A big shout out to Jenny, Sophie and Amelia, who dominated the court!) A big highlight of the day was when we scored goals and worked together. We had a great day full of sport.

Grace, Year 5

On 19th August, the Year 9/10 Boys Netball team travelled to the State Netball and Hockey Centre to compete in the Netball championships. After clearing their pool undefeated, they lost a close game in the preliminary final. This resulted to a showdown for 3rd place against Covenant Christian College. After trailing by 2 points at halftime, the boys were able to claim 3rd place after a nail biting finish, winning 7-6. A big thanks to Mr Zammit for coaching the boys to victory.

Daniel and Zach, Year 10

On Monday 19th August, a Year 7/8 Girls Netball team attended the CSEN Netball Championship Day. The girls played 4 different teams including Christway Christian College, Edinburgh Christian College, Belgrave Heights Christan School and Heathdale Christian College. Although the girls didn’t win, we still tried our best overall and we had fun.

Staff v. Students Volleyball Match

On Tuesday 27th August, our Northside student community had the exciting opportunity to challenge the teachers in a fun, friendly, yet fierce volleyball match.

Battling against both the wind and the teachers’ well-honed volleyball skills— developed over years of sporting experience—the student team channelled their school spirit to secure a 3-0 victory.

The game was thrilling, featuring unblockable spikes, lightning-fast serves, and a remarkable save by Mrs Caldwell that stood out as the highlight of the match. School spirit was on full display as students from across the College came together to cheer on both the seniors and the teachers, who were clearly the crowd favourites.

The volleyball match was a fantastic opportunity for the school to unite and celebrate our God-given talents through sport.

VCE Football Rally Day

On Friday 16th August, ten VCE boys suited up for the footy rally days. After only having a couple of self-organised lunchtime training sessions, they all gave their best effort on the day and showed true Northside values such as participation, commitment and teamwork.

Although the boys got off to a rough start for the first five games, they drew their last game, learning how to play as a team and support each other. This day would definitely not have been possible without the amazing PE staff in Mrs Burger and Mrs Claassens. The three words that could describe this event are supportive, teamwork and encouragement.

Melbourne Debating Final Play Off

On Thursday 22nd August, in Round 1 of the Melbourne Debating Final Play Off, Lawson, Moyo and Jasdeep skilfully argued against the motion that all art galleries and museums in Australia should not be free, securing a well-deserved victory. They will continue to the next round in September.

A special congratulations to Moyo for being named Best Speaker. Well done to the entire team!

Wellbeing R U OK? Day

On 12th September, Northside Christian College acknowledged R U OK? Day, a powerful reminder to check in with those around us and support one another. At Northside, we marked the day by wearing splashes of yellow and reflecting on the importance of mental health.

With pressures from school, social media, and life, mental health is a growing concern for young people. R U OK? Day encourages us to reach out and have meaningful conversations with those who may be struggling. At Northside, we are committed to fostering open discussions about mental health and removing stigma both in and out of the classroom.

It’s not just about asking the question today, but every day—because a simple conversation can make a big difference.

To support this effort, we have a Special Report available with guidance on talking to your child about mental health. You can view the report here: https://ncc.vic.schooltv.me/wel.../special-report-r-u-ok-day

Let’s continue to offer kindness, listening ears, and support every day. Together, we can make a difference.

PlanetBoom

On 13th September, the College hosted the PlanetBoom Schools Tour which aims to give the students a message of hope for their life. PlanetBoom uses sound and lights and games to build an atmosphere of joy, followed by a time of praise and words of encouragement.

The Tour speaker, Dominique (Dom) O’Brien shared his personal testimony, not only in word but through the medium of rap. Many students were deeply impacted by his testimony and the presence of Jesus in the meeting.

We were grateful to be able to host this event at Encompass Church. Thank you to Mr Jared Stocks for organising this event for our College community.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26

One of the core goals of our PeaceWise curriculum at Northside Christian College is to cultivate communities of peace by following Christ and leading by His example. It’s about realising that a culture of peace starts with each of us, and we can be peacemakers every day, wherever we are.

God is so good and kind that He has given us His Word to guide us in wisdom as we strive to be peacemakers. In Ephesians 4:25-32, Paul provides clear instructions on how we can be better peacemakers: “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. ‘In your anger do not sin’: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold... Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen... Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

I was especially encouraged while reading through student leadership application forms. One Primary School student wrote about learning how to be a “peacemaker rather than a peacebreaker” this year—a heartening testament to the impact of this curriculum.

As we approach the holiday season, what strategies could you implement with your family to foster peace and show them that peacemaking truly works? Consider opportunities like the 3 Choices of Forgiveness, the 5A’s of Apology, the Paws Process, or even Peacemaking Pizza to create moments of harmony and understanding.

Let’s return to Term 4 with testimonies of how, when faced with conflict at home, a peacemaking strategy was employed instead of resorting to an attack or escape response. Together, we can continue building a culture of peace, one step at a time.

Notices Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Donations Update

Greetings kind and generous members of the Northside community.

The Operation Christmas Child Team would like to provide you with an update on the status of the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child shoe-box packing and posting process. We also wish to share with you a very special moment that saw the Year 10H Pastoral Care class come into direct contact with unexpected generosity from members of the broader regional community, beyond the gates of Northside.

Both Year 10 classes have been working towards being able to pack the boxes with donated gifts for many months. This has included: running fund-raisers to pay the postage costs, putting out the call to the College community for donations of items to go into the boxes, and making some toys themselves to include in the shoe-boxes. Despite these efforts, and the huge amount of generously donated gifts and contributions from the College community, we remained very low on donations of small soft toys.

On Wednesday 28th August, Year 10H were drilled on appropriate shoe-box packing procedures from Mrs Waters. Students had just begun their packing work, when a call came from the Reception team at the front desk to say some ladies had arrived, with several bags of hand-knitted soft toys, wondering if they might be of use to us for the shoebox appeal. We brought Joan and Jackie (from the University of the 3rd Age, Banyule) with their bags through to the packing room … their arrival and contribution of just over 100 hand-knitted bears could not have been more perfectly timed. Obviously, we didn’t hesitate to capture the moment with a few photos. The Year 10’s managed to fill 100 shoe-boxes ... and there wouldn’t be many that don’t have a hand-knitted bear in them! We are deeply grateful for the kindness and generosity of these ladies, and their associates, at Banyule U3A.

Regarding finances, we are also getting closer to having raised the amount needed to pay for the postage of the boxes through Samaritan’s Purse to their overseas destination. A huge thanks to those families that have also been able to make a financial contribution to this fund, and those that made donations of gifts for the boxes. We may still need to run some additional fund-raising events to top up our funds for postage, so stay tuned! Anyone wishing to contribute to this fund in the interim is welcome to do so direct through the College Accounts Office.

Thank you all for your kind-hearted support of this project.

Wishing you peace, love and joy … the Operation Christmas Child Team.

College Hours During the Term Holidays

From Friday 20th September to Friday 4th October, the College Reception will be open from 9:00am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday. Normal hours will resume on Monday 7th October, the first day of Term 4.

Term 4: Summer Uniform and Hats

From Term 4, Week 3, all students are required to wear their full Summer uniform. There will be a two-week changeover period during Term 4, Weeks 1 and 2, when Winter or Summer uniform can be worn (but not interchangeably). Please consider the weather when deciding on the most suitable uniform for your child to wear in the first two weeks of Term 4.

As of Monday 21st October, all students are required to wear full Summer uniform.

Hats MUST be worn when playing outside or participating in outdoor activities for all of Term 4, even if your child is wearing their Winter uniform in Week 1 and Week 2.

Rubbish Disposal and Waste-Free Lunch

Northside Christian College has sustainability education initiatives, one of which is “The Waste-Free Lunch Challenge” held every Thursdays. Although Thursdays are our official challenge day, we would love to see students have a wastefree lunch every day.

Unfortunately, we have seen a rise in students throwing rubbish in the creek that borders the College grounds. Being conscious of the waste included in your student’s lunch box each day will assist us in ensuring the College property and surrounding waterways are kept clear and rubbish-free.

Change to Northside Printed Calendar

The College Calendar had published that the Primary and Secondary School Celebration events would take place on 5th and 6th December. Unfortunately these events won’t be able to go ahead on these dates. Please be aware of the following changes to the end of Year Celebration events and mark the NEW DATES in your calenders:

Dear parents and carers

Re: $400 School Saving Bonus

Families want the absolute best for their kids. But with the current cost of living – uniforms, camps, sports and more – it all adds up.

That’s why the Allan Labor Government is making life that little bit easier for families, by providing a one-off $400 School Saving Bonus.

Non-government school students who will be in Prep through to Year 12 in 2025, and who are receiving the means-tested Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF), are eligible for the School Saving Bonus.

Parents and carers do not need to apply, with the School Saving Bonus being paid to nongovernment schools for eligible students from late November 2024.

The $400 School Saving Bonus is available for each child. That means an eligible family with three school-aged children will receive a total of $1,200.

Importantly, the School Saving Bonus is available in addition to the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund.

To learn more about the School Saving Bonus, talk to your school about how this cost of living relief will apply to you.

More information about the School Saving Bonus is also available at vic.gov.au/schoolsaving-bonus.

And from our families to yours – best of luck for the 2025 school year.

Sincerely,

2024 E e e
