Principal’s Message

Welcome back! I hope Semester 2 has started well for our students, staff and families. We extend a special welcome to new students and families who have joined our College community this term.

Our staff valued the opportunity to connect with students and parents at the recent Parent-StudentTeacher conferences. These interviews allowed our community to develop stronger connections to support student learning at Northside. We also look forward to numerous opportunities to strengthen our sense of community throughout the term.

Students and staff have been working diligently for several months in preparation for our 2024 school musical, Shrek The Musical Jr. This event has provided an opportunity for students across a broad range of year levels to work collaboratively in preparation for the upcoming performances. The performances in September will facilitate a wonderful chance for our College community to gather and observe the music, drama and dance skills of our students. It has been special observing the friendships and connections developed through students’ active participation in the performing arts at Northside.

I am sure many students are already planning their costumes for Book Week this term. Book Week is a special event at Northside with many students and staff across the College actively engaging in this event over many years. It is always a delight seeing our College community arriving at school dressed up in a diverse range of costumes celebrating a love of reading as a community.

The Children’s Book Week theme for 2024 is Reading is Magic, which celebrates reading stories and their amazing power to transport our minds. This theme reminds me of the importance of turning to God’s Word as a source of truth and direction. In Psalm 119:105 we read,

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

May we continue to remember the significance of the Bible as an amazing book that can help us learn more about God. In Romans 12:2 we are reminded,

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

At Northside, we place great value on building our sense of community. Our Strategic Plan: A Place to Flourish highlights “Strengthening School Community Connections” as a strategic priority for the College. I pray our students will embrace the many extracurricular activities available this term to support them to feel connected at Northside. Music, sports, debating, art, chapel, and other activities provide authentic opportunities for us to connect.

I am praying we have a wonderful term ahead as a College community.

Working together,

““Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Prep students and Principal Mr Michael Bond.

100 Days of Prep

On Thursday 8th August, the Preps celebrated 100 Days of Prep! We had a fantastic day in our 100 - year themed costumes, with songs, fun activities and crafts! We wrapped up the day with a fun afternoon, sharing our day with our Prep families.

A huge thank you to the Preps and Prep Parents, who made the day special with their amazing costumes and 100-thing presentations.

Students explored Sovereign Hill and enjoyed the ropes course and fire pit at the camp site.

Congratulations Isabel in Year 3 on obtaining Fencing Gold Medal

On Sunday 23rd June, Year 3 student Isabel participated in the Under 9 Foil State Competition.

Isabel succeeded in taking 1st place on the day. She received a gold medal for her incredible efforts. Well done, Isabel, keep following your fencing dreams.

Middle School Year 7 NGV Pharaoh Exhibition

The students in Year 7 were fortunate enough to be able to attend the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Pharaoh Exhibition in Week Three.

The Year 7 students are studying Ancient Egypt, and it is a privilege and a blessing to be able to see original artifacts for history.

We highly recommend everyone take time to visit this exhibition.

Year 9 visit the Shrine of Remembrance

On a cold Thursday 8th August, Year 9 students visited The Shrine of Remembrance. This visit was to support their learning in History of The Great War and Australia’s involvement. Here they were able to better understand the impact WWI had on all those who lost loved ones in the War.

In attempting to highlight the remarkable bravery of servicemen during the war, we continually returned to the central theme: Mateship.

We learned that our service men have shown unfathomable courage and sacrifice in the face of nightmarish conditions.

We discovered that our country has paid a huge price in war with the lives of too many sons, brothers and fathers lost. Finally, to encapsulate the somber feeling, Moyo and William read the following out in the crypt of The Shrine: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; age shall not weary them, nor years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

LEST WE FORGET.

Year 9 Instructions for Creating a USI

Parents of Year 9 students are reminded to assist their child to create a USI (Unique Student Identifier). This is a very important number now required by the Commonwealth for enrolment in any tracing from Secondary School onwards. The procedure to obtain this number is very straightforward and takes about 10 minutes of your time when using your Medicare card or passport.

Please visit www.usi.gov.au/students/get-a-usi and ensure that your child emails this number to Mrs Lenna Waters or copies and pastes it into the Schoology Assignment Page for Work Studies. Students and parents can contact Mrs Lenna Waters or Ms Marissa Chui if they have any further questions.

Due by 19th September 2024 (Last day of Term 3)

Senior School

Year 11 Biology: Bunny Inheritance

Year 11 Biology students are learning all about inheritance and how genes and traits are passed on to future generations. We are studying rabbits in our class with the mum, named Hilda, arriving with her 6 babies called kittens, from a company called Animals on the Move. They were born with no fur and their eyes shut. I asked the students to predict how many there would be in the litter and 2 students guessed correctly. We looked at images of the father and also Hilda’s parents to predict what we think the fur colour of the kittens will be. It will be interesting to see if they guess correctly.

The rabbits have been here for 2 weeks and grown around 2cm in length. They have grown fur and each kit is a different colour. They are almost opening their eyes and we look forward to students coming in to meet them during Science Week.

Unit 2 Literature Excursion

On Thursday 25th July, the Unit 2 Literature class attended the Ian Potter Centre in Federation Square to view some of the Indigenous artworks on display. In Unit 2 Literature, students undertake an area of study titled ‘Voices of Country’, and in this they study the different ways Indigenous authors and artists tell their stories in post-colonial Australia. We were lucky enough to then have lunch together at Sophia’s family’s cafe, Prosa, in the city - a wonderful opportunity to discuss what contemporary Aboriginal art can tell us about First Nations connection to our country, as well as sample delicious Brazilian cuisine!

Students visting the NGV and the Ian Potter Centre at Febderation Square.

Year 12 Legal Studies: Metro Law

On Thursday 1st August, the Year 12 Legal Studies students had the opportunity to attend the Metro Law Talks; an education program run by the Victorian Law Foundation. The talks took place within the County Court, at the top of William Street in Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD).

The first session began in the jury selection room. The talk included an overview of the purpose of the jury in the criminal justice system, and an insight into the jury selection process for trials held in both the County and Supreme Courts.

The second session was presented by two currently practicing barristers at law, who shared their insights and experiences at becoming legal professionals. Students enjoyed a generous Q and A opportunity with these practicing lawyers, gaining insights into the types of cases they deal with, and the nature of their work.

The final session was presented by Rob Hulls (AM), former member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, and former Attorney General of Victoria. Currently the Director for the Centre of Innovative Justice at RMIT, Rob Hulls’ life journey, professional and academic pathway has been shaped by his core and unshakable belief in the need for the legal system to serve those who are least likely to be able to defend themselves; the homeless, First Nations Peoples, victims of domestic violence, and those with mental health and drug addiction challenges. During his time as Attorney General for Victoria, Mr Hulls was directly instrumental in embedding the Human Rights Charter in the Victorian legislative process. Students found this session engaging, informative and instructive in the impact an individual can have in bringing about positive change in our justice system in the pursuit of social cohesion.

Mini Olympics

On Tuesday 30th July, Northside hosted a Primary School Mini Olympics, and it was a lot of fun. Twenty-four countries participated, all aiming for gold. I was on Team Nigeria. First, we spent some time getting ready for the opening ceremony. We made flags and green-and-white streamers.

The opening ceremony was exciting. Our song was fifth in the line up, and we really enjoyed the music and atmosphere.

Our first event was lacrosse, where we used small rackets and a ball. After that, we moved on to equestrian—it was okay but a bit uncomfortable. Then we played volleyball and managed to score ten points for our team!

Our next event was kayaking. It was enjoyable, though a bit painful, but we earned more points, so it was worth it. After kayaking, we tried shooting. It was fun, but I kept missing the target. Even though I was doing my best, I still had a good time.

Then we played table tennis. It was cool because we got to do trick shots, bouncing the ball into cups.

Next was soccer, my absolute favourite. We played against Great Britain and won! One of my teammates passed the ball to me when I was open, and I managed to score in the top right corner of the goal. After that, we did a flag identification challenge and got 36 out of 50 correct.

We took a break for lunch, and afterward, everyone participated in different activities. We then did weightlifting and scored 500 points which was awesome! After that, we did archery, where I scored 12 points with two six-point shots. We also played hockey, which we got the hang of, though I ended up getting my shoes muddy. Finally, we did athletics, where we competed in a relay race that went well.

The day ended with a thrilling closing ceremony. Everyone gathered to hear the final results. Ireland took third place, Great Britain secured second, and Nepal emerged victorious, claiming the top spot. Although Nigeria didn’t place, we celebrated our efforts and had an incredible time together. The Primary School Mini Olympics was a day filled with fun, teamwork, and unforgettable memories.

Sport

CSEN Cross Country

On Thursday 25th July, Primary and Secondary School students with the talent of long-distance running were welcomed to participate in the overwhelming event called CSEN Cross Country Championships held at Bundoora Park.

Secondary School students participated in Division B and were told to arrive and participate in the morning before the Primary School students in the afternoon. A few Secondary School students received valuable medals. However, everyone tried their best, and we knew that was what mattered most.

About midway through the day, Primary School students were settled on the Diamond Coaches bus and made their way to the park. The bus parked at a parking lot not far from the racing area. We met the Secondary School students on the way to the gazebo where it was wet and muddy. They warned the Primary School students that the last corner was extremely muddy and that everyone fell over at that point! We were ordered from oldest girls to youngest boys and were competing in Division A which was super competitive and difficult to win places. We achieved some fourth places but we were competing against over 80 students each.

After all the races everyone packed up and encountered the same Diamond Coaches bus and headed back to school. It was muddy, but no matter what place we got we all did our best, and that is the real path of success, so we all succeeded in our race.

Grace, Year 4 Student

Students had a wonderful day and even ran into a familiar face, former Northside Staff member Mr Chris Simmons.

House Paper Chain Competition

Thank you to everyone who came to the Basketball Court and assisted with constructing the chains.

A big thank you to our Property Manager Mr Stephen Nelson for helping construct the chains but then also displaying them in the Upper Primary Neighbourhood.

It was a very close competition. The results are as follows:

Year 5 and 6 T-Ball Division Competition

On Friday 26th July, our Years 5 and 6 mixed T-Ball team went to Mill Park to compete in the T-Ball competition. It was super fun, but very windy. We didn’t know how to play T-Ball that well at first, but eventually got the hang of it. Overall, we won two out of our three games, our last game being our toughest; narrowly losing to Mill Park Primary. I was happy with our result, coming 2nd out of 4 schools. We really enjoyed learning and playing T-Ball!

Year 12 Students Shine at Melbourne Interschool Mooting Competition

On Thursday 25th July, two Year 12 students, Madison and Sarah participated in the Melbourne Interschool Mooting Competition at Trinity Grammar. Mooting involves arguing a case in front of a judge, honing skills in legal research, public speaking, and logical argumentation.

Under the expert guidance of Courtney McKenzie, Head of Deakin University’s Moot Court, Madison and Sarah dedicated weeks to preparation.

We extend our sincere thanks to Courtney for her mentorship.

In Round 1, they faced rigorous questioning, with Madison responding confidently and Sarah respectfully. Applying feedback in Round 2, Sarah earned Best Speaker, showcasing exceptional advocacy skills, while Madison clearly articulated their case. Their significant improvement from last year highlights their hard work and dedication.

Congratulations to Madison and Sarah for their outstanding achievements!

Northside Debating Teams Shine in Regional Competition

We are excited to share the success of our Year 9 debating teams in the regional competition over Terms 1 to Term 3. On Monday 29th July, the finals saw Josiah, Viana and Aneeqa secure an impressive 3rd place, with Aneeqa consistently winning Best Speaker awards.

Lawton, Jasdeep and Moyo took home 1st place, with Moyo earning the title of Best Speaker in all events. They will now compete in a series of playoffs against other regions this term.

Congratulations to all our debaters for their hard work and success. We look forward to more updates as the competition progresses.

Thriving Minds Philosophy Conference!

Middle School

On Wednesday 31st July, ten of our Middle School students had the opportunity to attend the Thriving Minds Philosophy Conference hosted by Ivanhoe Grammar School. This event was all about sparking curiosity and encouraging critical thinking. A particularly exciting session delved into recent breakthroughs, such as Elon Musk’s brain chip implant. Students imagined a world where designing children for enhanced intelligence and athleticism becomes a reality. This scenario raised important questions: Could we? Should we? The session explored the complexities of genetic manipulation, from embryo testing to creating new crops, and its profound impact on modern science. Ethical considerations, including the risk of future genetic apartheid, were also discussed, making it a truly enlightening experience.

The conference wasn’t just about learning but also connecting with other bright minds and making new friends. In mixed school groups, students reflected on whether intelligence equates to justice and morality when not compelled and ponder the role of government in legislating morality.

Students also had an opportunity to hear a debate about whether the universe points to God or not; all schools then had a chance to share their perspectives with all attendees at the conference.

Senior School

On Friday 2nd August, thirteen of our Senior School students recently attended the Thriving Minds Philosophy Conference hosted by Ivanhoe Grammar at La Trobe University.

Students were introduced to “Cogito Ergo Sum: Introducing Descartes,” where they explored the famous idea, “I think, therefore I am.” They also tackled big questions about life after death in the session “What Dreams May Come?”.

Our students participated in sessions like “The Oxbridge Interview Question” to sharpen their thinking skills and “Science and Miracles” with Dr. Andrew Pinsent, exploring the fascinating interplay between science and faith. They also debated the ethical implications of AI, sparking discussions.

The conference was a fantastic opportunity for our students to meet peers from other schools, share ideas, and grow both intellectually and socially.

Wellbeing Get to know our Wellbeing Team

Name?

General background?

Chelsea Weeks Student Wellbeing cweeks@ncc.vic.edu.au

I have been working at Northside for almost 5 and a half years. Having a strong history in Business Administration, I started out in our wonderful Reception Team and quickly fell in love with our Godly community, our precious students and amazing staff. I worked in Reception for two years but in 2021 was feeling the call of the Lord to step into a different space, I knew I was called to help heal broken hearts. In 2021, I moved into a dual Learning Support and Student Wellbeing role and was made a full time Student Wellbeing staff member in 2023. I have a Diploma in Counselling and will continue to pursue this study as the years go on.

When you were young, what did you want to be?

When I was very little it would have been something creative - I wanted to sing. From a young age I wanted to be a Pastor or Psychologist - I have always wanted to help people and point people to Jesus.

Most unusual job?

In my early 20’s I worked for a Children’s Entertainment company. My primary role was administration, but I did learn how to twist balloons and I have done some work as a roaming entertainer and balloon twister for children’s birthday parties!

Best part about your job?

Our Wellbeing Team is truly the best team. We’re raw, vulnerable and real - we are happy to talk and laugh about everything. We love Jesus and we love pointing people to Him. I also deeply love our precious students, seeing their faces light up and being able to support them in the highs and lows of life is an honour.

What do you like to do outside of your work?

Jesus, family, friends and food. Jesus is my number one priority and I love serving His house - I am heavily involved at my church and love serving my church family. My family and friends are so important to me and love quality time with them. I love good coffee, cheese and finding hidden gem restaurants and cafes. Love live music and I try at any possible opportunity to escape into nature, I also read a lot.

When you think of Jesus, what comes to mind? He is so kind. When we are faithless He remains faithful because He cannot deny Himself. The steadfast love of the Lord endures forever, nothing can separate us from His love.

What would you choose for your last meal?

I joke that cheese is my love language - I’d probably just want a lot of cheese.

Favourite movie?

Anything light hearted and romantic - probably a classic like Pride and Prejudice, Count of Monte Cristo - the books are even better! Also love a super cheesy Hallmark movie - don’t judge me.

Any pets?

No pets right now, I would love a dog.

What are you passionate about?

People, really seeing people in the fullness and intricacies of who they are created to be, genuinely loving the fullness of that person and calling forth God’s best intent for them.

Favourite place to visit?

I love nature and love to discover beautiful places - I love the beach, mountains and forests. I feel closer to God in nature and find it always puts everything into perspective against all the wonderful things He created.

My life verse or motto?

Isaiah 61: Vs 1 - 3 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit, that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

Heidi Baker: “Ministry, however, is simply loving the person in front of you. It’s about stopping for the one and being the very fragrance of Jesus to a lost and dying world.”

Roy T. Bennett: Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity. The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply.”

Guest Speaker Daniel Principe

On Wednesday 7th and Friday 9th August, Northside Christian College had passionate youth advocate and educator, Daniel Principe, speak to our Years 7 – 12 cohorts. Daniel spent the two days championing our young people to challenge culture and aspire to live courageous, respectful and empathetic lives all through a Christian worldview.

Daniel addressed the complex challenges that our digital world presents to adolescence such as toxic influencers, objectification, gender stereotypes and societal norms. Harmful messages like these bombard today’s youth through social media, advertising, online content and the culture around them. Daniel encouraged our young people to recognise and resist distorted attitudes and he invited them to instead aspire to healthy relationships built on mutual respect and empathy. Daniel empowered our young men and women with wisdom on how to live and lead decently, being in the world but not of it.

Daniel presented separate sessions for male and female students. Students were able to ask Daniel questions at the end of each session.
