Principal’s Message

I wish to thank our College community for their efforts throughout the semester. It is special being a part of such a loving school community. During the final few weeks of term, it has been amazing observing all of the support structures in place to assist our students in completing their studies this semester. It has been an incredible team effort from our staff and College community.

Our staff have done an amazing job supporting our students to participate in a diverse range of extracurricular activities across the semester, including camps, excursions, music, interschool sport, INSPiRE activities, wellbeing programs, mentoring, student leadership, and Vision prayer. The final few weeks of Semester 1 have also seen our staff support students to engage in various assessments, including midyear examinations for Years 9 – 11 and the General Achievement Test (GAT) for many of our VCE students. I also wish to commend our students for challenging themselves across the first semester.

Throughout the semester, we have focused on our College theme ‘Created’. Students and staff have explored our theme during class devotions, chapel services, and assemblies. It has been special reflecting on our amazing God and creator. Discussions on our theme have explored God’s handiwork on an enormous scale, including the vast Milky Way, down to the microscopic. Although we live in a huge universe, our God also knows every little detail about us and loves each one of us so much.

Revelation 4:11 reminds:

“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things and by your will they exist and were created.”

We are grateful that Christ is at the centre of all we do at Northside. May we continue to give glory to God. We thank God for His provision, protection, and unfailing love.

We pray for a safe and refreshing break for our College community to support us to have a great start to Semester 2 on Wednesday 17th July 2024.

Working together,

““I also wish to commend our students for challenging themselves across the first semester.”

Portrait of a Graduate

Over the course of several years, and with input from College families, we have developed the Northside Christian College Portrait of a Graduate. This document is an articulation of the qualities that we hope our students will possess after completing their learning at the College.

We are pleased to have this clear vision of the graduates we are trying to produce and we hope you’re excited to partner with us in this shared goal.

Student Refugee Week

In Week 10 the College celebrated Refugee Week. The theme for Refugee Week in 2024 was “Finding Freedom” –with a focus on family.

This theme invited us to explore the stories of refugees who, despite the challenges they encounter, discover a source of freedom within the embrace of their families. Whether it’s the unwavering support of parents, the protective love between siblings, or the communal strength found in extended and chosen families, neighbours, support systems upon arrival in Australia, these connections become a beacon of hope in times of uncertainty. At Northside, we celebrate being part of God’s family and the blessing this is to each of us.

Student leaders organised a range of different activities including the Salvation Army Blanket Drive and hot chocolates sales, with profits going to Houses of Hope, a Christian organisation who provides practical support to refugees. In total, 101 blankets were donated and over $600 was raised to go towards Houses of Hope.

Students were able to purchase warm chocolate milk drinks with various toppings.

Year 2 try Chinese cuisine

As part of our Year 2 Chinese curriculum we have been exploring Chinese cuisine ( ) and learning about the different food and drinks. To mark the conclusion of this unit we have decided to taste and eat some of these foods from a restaurant down the street. It was a feast of many kinds of dishes including noodles, fried rice, chicken wings, dumplings, steamed and fried buns.

It wasn’t very easy to eat with chopsticks but it was definitely memorable for many as a first-time experience to eat with Asian utensils. Nevertheless, it was great fun dining together and immersing in a cultural experience like never before!

Amelin
Students pre-ordered what they wanted to try and enjoyed the experience of sitting in a “restaurant” and sampling various Chinese dishes.

Year 3/4 Scienceworks Excursion

We had a brilliant day all about science and how it works! On 31st May 2024, the Year 3/4 students went to Scienceworks for a science experience that is never to be forgotten!

We started at Northside Christian College hopping on the bus. After a 45 minute drive we finally arrived at Scienceworks. Soon after we settled on a rainbow staircase, and enjoyed our morning tea. Just as we finished, the teachers ordered us house by house to place our belongings on the trolley, and then the Year 4’s proceeded to the planetarium because we were the closest. The staff at Scienceworks there told us about space and its planets. It was like a movie theatre!

Next, we entered a place called Sports Works. We were given a booklet each and told to record our size information in partners. We got the opportunity to race the Aboriginal champion runner Cathy Freeman, rate gymnasts, and many more things. One way there were pictures of many kinds, it was fascinating.

We also went into two other rooms. One of them was all sorts of things like sound cubes, cars (eco friendly) design, and creating an avatar are just some of the many things in the room. I think the children loved the elevator thing the most. The other room was like a galaxy sort of theme. The roof is a mirror and it has a mirror maze, too! There was also a large glass cage with tiny foam balls inside it where the students could use a controller to blow the foam balls away. Can’t forget about the black holes! They were very liked, too.

All the Year 3 and 4 students loved Scienceworks. Everyone had a scientifically enjoyable Friday.

Grace, Year
Students visited a selection of exhibits that each target different learning areas.

Year 5/6 Community Service at Goodstart

Early Learning

The Year 5/6 Community Service Group travels each Friday to Goodstart Early Learning to play, connect with, and teach children in the 3 and 4-year-old rooms.

Northside students have selected different College values to incorporate into the crafts they choose to do with the children at Goodstart. Last week, the craft was the creation of a dove, symbolising the value of Grace. Northside and Goodstart children ‘buddy up’ and spend time in creative play together. Sometimes this looks like reading a book together, playing in the dress-up corner, working on a Lego creation, or playing outside together. A beautiful sense of community and mateship has developed amongst the children as they have spent time together throughout the term.

Children have investigated germs and how to help stop them spreading in winter, shared pictures of the Northside Seeds of Life Garden, talked about school readiness, and worked on asking and responding to questions with eye contact. Through all this, many new friends have been made, and the group cherish these moments, looking forward to meeting their friends all week.

Financial Literacy in Year 6V

This year the 6V class have been learning about Financial Literacy through an online platform called Banqer. This platform helps to build life skills and prepare students for their financial future through the exploration of different finance modules and simulated play with ‘Banqer dollars’.

On Thursday 20th June, as part of the Banqer program, the 6V class welcomed some very special visitors, some of who flew all the way from New Zealand just to meet Ms Vaughn and the class! This included Co-CEO from Banqer, Simon Brown and Matt Heine, CEO and Mangering Director of Netwealth.

Together students and visitors explored the concept of Superannuation, looking at the idea of retirement and how to financially prepare for a good retirement. Students explored the Superannuation module in Banqer while asking lots of questions of the experts in the room.

It was a wonderful afternoon of learning and sharing of learning for all.

The team from Banqer shared with students about their Financial Literacy program.

Year 7/8 Advanced Science: Sun printing Middle School

During Weeks 8 and 10, students learned about Sun printing. Students explored the science behind the magic of the Cyanotype process and learned the foundation of photography which involves using chemistry to create a lightsensitive solution that when exposed to light causes a chemical reaction. Students used the chemical solution to turn the paper “light sensitive”. They made what is referred to as a cyanotype by collecting materials from outside the classroom, and then laying them onto the light-sensitive paper. They then exposed their compositions to the light and watched how the sunlight “develops” their pictures by turning exposed areas blue, when rinsed with water, the unexposed areas are turned to a different colour (the original colour of the paper). These masterpieces were from my Year 7/8 Advanced Science class.

Year 9 City Challenge

Year 9 students were given the opportunity to grow in their knowledge and maturity with the City Challenge experience. Students began this experience with the question, ‘Is Melbourne an egalitarian society?’. Ms Westland and Mrs Wiltshire discussed the definition of egalitarianism with them and collaborated on crafting a survey to interview people in Melbourne. The obvious result was not so obvious. Students began to discover that a persons opinion on Melbourne, was solely dependent on their economic position.

However, this was a good response. As discovered through an Intersection workshop, perspective is everything. How we view others is dependent on socioeconomics. Until we get to know another person, we truly cannot know who they are and therefore, we should not judge.

In order to support our students growth, they participated in an Empathy workshop with Intersection, completed a $5 challenge and learned about homelessness through the Salvation Army. Needless to say, the Year 9 cohort experienced Melbourne in its fullness.

Our prayer is that these young people become incredible men and women of Christ, serving others, bringing love, laughter and truth to our world and representing God in His fullness.

Mrs Sharon Simic Secondary Teacher
Students had to work together to navigate the city. They spent time learning from the homeless and completing various challenges.

Unit 4 Food Studies Senior School

Unit 4 students have been learning about gaining food knowledge and skills and how we can become educated about different foods and diets. We embarked at testing a current Masterchef recipe that was created for the plant based meal challenge. So we recreated chicken and waffles using oyster mushrooms instead of chicken. The students were amazed how delicious it was and didn’t miss the meat. We are thinking around how to reduce meat consumption and how to increase vegetable consumption. This was an amazing session. We also tried this with kale, but the mushroom was a bigger hit.

VET Discovery Expo

On Thursday 30th May a group of Year 9 and 10 students had the opportunity to attend a VET/TAFE related careers and jobs-related expo at the Broadmeadows Town Hall. Everyone had a wonderful time learning about a wide variety of careers that are available with a Diploma or Advanced Diploma. Students enjoyed exploring how our money is created to be cybersafe at Note Printing Australia, building things at a variety of stalls and generally getting lots of freebies along the way.

All students reported the 1 hour session as a success and wished that it was longer. “I found the VET Expo to be a wonderfully fun and informative experience. I personally learned about VET subjects offered at RMIT and getting personalised feedback about courses. And you can’t forget the free handouts as well.”

Danielle, Year 10

Velisha Farms Excursions

On Friday 16th May the Year 9/10 Food Specialisations, Year 12 Food Studies, and VM Work Related Skills undertook a morning tour at Velisha Farms in Werribee. A variety of topics related to careers in the horticulture industry, sustainable farming practices, food security, food hygiene, nutrition, and working in a horticulture environment were all discussed and relevant to each class. Students were encouraged to wear warm clothing. The education room felt warm after being in the cool store of 2 degrees.

Students sat through a presentation about sustainable farming and food hygiene practices.

Sport

CSEN Volleyball Rally Day

On Thursday 27th May, selected Year 11/12 students went to Dandenong State Volleyball Stadium to participate in the CSEN Volleyball Rally Day. This opportunity enhanced teamwork, communication and most importantly fun. The boys took home 2 wins and 3 losses but overall had an amazing experience.

CSEN Basketball Rally Day

On Thursday 27th May, the VCE girls headed down to the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South to participate in the CSEN Basketball Rally Day. The team played well together and showed grit and determination in the heat of play! The girls took home 2 wins, 2 losses and a contentious draw - finishing third in our pool, just missing out on a spot in finals. The girls gave glory to God in their behaviour, effort and sportsmanship and we are so proud of their achievements.

CSEN Western Rally Day

On Monday 3rd June, a group of Years 7 - 8 girls went to the Western Rally Day to represent Northside in 4 different sports - table tennis, basketball, badminton and netball. The day started off with table tennis in doubles, with us using our skills to play, winning points, and winning the sport overall. This win gave us more encouragement for the remaining sports. Next, we played basketball. Even though we put in lots of effort, we still lost our first game. But throughout the matches we became more skilled, more confident, upped our defense and won the rest of our games in basketball. Then we played badminton in doubles playing very well and winning the sport overall. In netball, we truly played as a team, encouraging each other and pushing through each game. Overall, we won overall in table tennis, badminton and netball, making us the multi-sport champion for the 7 and 8 girls for the Rally Day. Thank you to Mrs Venegas for coaching us and all the people who organised the day. We had a wonderful day filled with fun, sportsmanship, and lots of sport.

Lauren, Year 7

Years 7/8 girl Western Rally Day participants.

On Monday 3rd June, a group of Secondary School students from Northside went on an excursion to the CSEN Rally Day competition. It was a competition consisting of four sports: Netball, Basketball, Table Tennis, and Badminton. Our group consisted of eight students from Years 7 - 8. We played an hour of each sport, having 8 - 10 minute games. We excelled in our performance while playing badminton, table tennis, and netball, winning the Rally Day championship for these three sports. We played basketball well but placed fifth overall. Our team had a fun and exciting day on this excursion. We enjoyed each sport we played and worked together as a team to achieve the goal of being the Rally Day champion, which we overall achieved!

On Monday 3rd June our Years 9 - 10 boys did an amazing job at the CSEN Western Rally Day, winning overall! They dominated the basketball court, winning all their games without a single loss. In netball, they showcased incredible teamwork and skill, also winning every game. In table tennis, their focus and teamwork earned them first place. In badminton, they put up a strong fight and secured second place. Great work, team!

da Vinci Decathlon 2024

Three teams, each composed of eight students from Years 7, 8, and 10, undertook a challenging intellectual competition at the highly anticipated da Vinci Decathlon this May. This renowned competition provided a platform for them to showcase their growth in collaboration skills and flexible thinking within a cooperative setting. The teams were tasked with completing around eight different papers within the allocated time.

Throughout the day, our Year 7 participants impressed us with their collaboration skills, honed through their INSPiRE classes. Working together, they demonstrated effective communication and the ability to leverage their diverse strengths. Their efforts led to a fantastic first-place finish in the Art and Poetry section. Congratulations to our Year 7 team!

The Year 8 team reflected that they improved their collaboration skills and their performance on the engineering paper compared to the previous year, highlighting their progress and determination.

It was the Year 10 team’s first experience at the competition, where they were tested on their flexibility of thought. Despite facing a very high level of difficulty in the tasks and subjects, they embraced the challenge with open minds, showcasing their ability to think creatively and approach problems from multiple angles.

We look forward to hearing about their results in the various competition papers next term. We congratulate our three teams for their remarkable efforts and achievements at the 2024 da Vinci Decathlon!

Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) Debating

In Week 6, the Debating Association of Victoria held Round 3. Our teams, which included 2 Year 9 teams (Moyo, Lawton, Jasdeep, Viana, Aneeqa, and Josiah) and one Year 10 team (Danielle, Laurence and Joshua), participated in intense debates. Both Year 9 teams emerged victorious. Josiah and Lawton showed significant improvement in their debating preparation and delivery. The Year 10 team tackled their first secret topic, preparing their debate just one hour before. Danielle was recognised as the best speaker of the debate, Laurence spoke confidently, and it was Joshua’s first time debating. We appreciate Joshua for stepping in at the last minute, especially for a secret topic debate, which is more challenging.

Ryan Evans: LEGO First Competition

Our College was honoured to welcome Ryan Evans from the popular TV show LEGO Masters for a day of creativity, fun, and brick-building adventures.

Ryan, known for his innovative LEGO designs and contagious enthusiasm, led an inspiring workshop. The Year 7/8 Robotics class, a testament to their hard work and dedication, showcased their skills using the LEGO First competition mats. They navigated their robots through complex courses, demonstrating their problem-solving abilities and teamwork. It was a proud moment to see our budding engineers in action, skilfully manoeuvring their robots with precision and creativity.

Meanwhile, our Year 7 students collaboratively created LEGO food and wearable LEGO! The students let their imaginations run wild, from burgers and pizzas to quirky LEGO hats and accessories. The results were nothing short of spectacular, with colourful and inventive designs that showcased their artistic flair.

A massive thank you goes out to Mr Chris Gatt and Mr Sam Woolan for their support.

Keep building, dreaming, and creating, everyone! Who knows, maybe the next LEGO Master is right here among us.

Students and their amazing LEGO creations.

Name?

General background?

Heather Cootee

Head of Student Wellbeing hcootee@ncc.vic.edu.au

I am married with two young adult children and being a mum is where I find the most joy. Sport may have been my love, but Physical Education was not my passion. Caring for people was, so the University course I attended was not the best fit. From there I was a gymnastics coach, I was a new car salesperson and then a sales representative. Although I worked with people, I was never fulfilled. I went back to study and moved into Youth Justice as a Youth Worker. A move to a small country town in North East Victoria saw me working for a Non Government Organisation with at risk youth. We completed our family at this time, ran a small business and I returned to study to complete my Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Christian). We returned to Melbourne and here I am.

When you were young, what did you want to be? I wanted to be a Veterinarian.

Most unusual job?

Probably car sales as a 20 year old female. There weren’t many females in the car game. I heard, saw and learned much about life at that time.

Commenced at Northside?

I commenced in January 2021 and absolutely LOVE my role!

Best part about your job?

It is an absolute privilege to do life with people and working in a College community like Northside Christian College allows one to do this. I love that God can be shared and openly talked about in my workplace. My team is amazing and we are supportive of each other. We have a huge amount of fun together and we laugh A LOT!

But it is your children, the young people I work alongside that are remarkable. The fact that they are prepared and brave enough to share their lives and ‘stuff’ with the team and I, is very humbling. This is the serious part of my role and one I am respectful of, professional and passionate about.

Hobbies?

I like to hang out with God, especially with my connect group. They have been a wonderful support for me over many years now.

I love sport and have been very invested in my childrens’ sport and lives in general. If I could be at home during the Olympics I would and wouldn’t miss a minute.

When you think of Jesus, what comes to mind?

A devoted, faithful friend.

What would you choose for your last meal?

A chargrilled steak cooked to perfection with a whole lot of veggies.

Favourite movie?

Dead Poets Society

Best holiday?

Watching the Australian Cricket Team in the Caribbean.

Any pets?

A dog called Louie.

What are you passionate about?

People. It is man’s inhumanity to man that saddens me.

Favourite place to visit?

Tawonga and the community I left behind in the Kiewa Valley. It fills my cup.

My life verse or motto?

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Life throws us many things and many of those things that challenge us are completely out of our control and not what we signed up for. But if we continue to ‘Trust and Obey’ He will get us through, no matter how painful. He is always faithful. To love God and love others......without judgement.

Team

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25 - 26

Recently, Mr. Nelson shared a devotion with the staff based on the book of 1 Peter. It was a timely reminder that we are strangers in this land and, as such, are called to be different.

In our PeaceWise program, the concept of the slippery slope helps us stay on top of conflict, which can look very different from what our culture suggests. The Lord has called us to be peacemakers. Sometimes this means overlooking conflicts, sometimes it involves talking through them, and sometimes it requires seeking help, as instructed by the Matthew 18 principle. These options often differ from what our culture advocates, yet 1 Peter reminds us that we are called to be different.

I encourage and challenge you with these words from 1 Peter, as we abide in Him, to walk as peacemakers in our everyday lives:

For the Scriptures tell us: “Whoever wants to embrace true life and find beauty in each day must stop speaking evil, hurtful words, and never deceive in what they say. Always turn from what is wrong and cultivate what is good; eagerly pursue peace in every relationship, making it your prize.” 1 Peter 3:10 - 11

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9

Notices Library: 2024 Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge

We are excited to say 214 students have chosen to take part in this year’s Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge. So far our students have read 3745 books. Of those students, 50 have already completed the Challenge.
