Principal’s Message

Throughout the year, it is exciting to observe our students challenge themselves through participating in the learning program and a diverse range of extra-curricular activities. Each student is challenged in different ways and embraces each opportunity with their strengths and skills. Let us remember that God created all of us for a reason and with different natural talents. May we find comfort in knowing that God made each one of us intentionally and with love.

Our theme for the year is “Created”. Our theme verse for the year is from Psalm 100:3 (NIV): “Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture.”

I am constantly encouraged to know that God made us for a purpose. In the book, The Purpose Driven Life, the author, Pastor Rick Warren, notes that you were made by God and for God. This sentiment is echoed in Colossians 1:16, which reminds us, “Everything got started in Him and finds its purpose in Him.”

Pastor Rick Warren continued, “To discover your purpose in life, you must turn to God’s Word, not the world’s wisdom” (p. 20). This quote reminds us of the importance of turning to the Bible for our source of truth, direction, and guidance. May we use the Bible as our roadmap in life.

Ephesians 2:10 also encourages us, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”

“To discover your purpose in life, you must turn to God’s Word, not the world’s wisdom.”

Pastor Rick Warren went on to say, “God never does anything accidentally, and He never makes mistakes. He has a reason for everything He creates. Every plant and every animal was planned by God, and every person was designed with a purpose in mind. God’s motive for creating you was His love” (p. 23).

So, let us be encouraged. We have been created by God for a purpose. You are considered a “masterpiece”. To discover our purpose in life, we must turn to God’s Word. We are not a mistake. God made us intentionally. God made you - so He could love you!

At Northside, we desire to transform lives through Christ and the wonder of learning. May we continue to give thanks that we have been created by God and we are known by Him.

Student Melbourne Legacy 92nd ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony

On Friday 19th April 2024, we had the opportunity as student leaders to represent Northside Christian College at Melbourne Legacy’s 92nd ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for students. Along with 3,700 other students, we were able to pay our respects to the veterans and honour those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our nation during the First World War, as well as other conflicts Australia has been involved in. After the ceremony, we visited the Shrine of Remembrance, where the scripture John 15:13 was engraved. It read,

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

This verse continues to remind us that sacrifices are made out of love. In this same way Jesus died for us for the remission of sins because He loves us and wants to spend eternity with us.

We may never see conflict on our doorstep, so we need to remember the ones who prevent it from coming to us. To all those currently serving in the Australian Defence Force, Navy and the Air Force, thank you for your sacrifice!

Anzac Day at Watsonia RSL

On 25th April 2024, the Middle School Captains attended an ANZAC Day Commemoration Service at Watsonia RSL with over 500 people in attendance. The service opened with an instrumental march played by the Watsonia RSL pipes and drums. Compelling speeches were delivered by students, including the Captains from Macleod College. Schools were invited to lay wreaths to commemorate the service men and women who have served our nation. It was an honourable experience to be among those laying an ANZAC wreath as a way to remember those who have lost their lives in service to Australia. A bugle played ‘The Last Post’ as the flags were slowly raised to the masthead. The event concluded with both the New Zealand national anthem, “God Defend New Zealand,” and the Australian national anthem, “Advance Australia Fair.”

Leadership

Harmony Day

Every year Australians celebrate Harmony Day. It is a day to honour cultural diversity and to spread inclusiveness, and a feeling of community for people from all backgrounds. The day is celebrated with several activities and events that promote respect and understanding among people, with its key message being ‘Everyone Belongs’.

This year at Northside, Harmony Day was celebrated on Wednesday 20th March. The whole school was encouraged to come either dressed in their cultural clothes or the colour orange, which symbolises connection and relationships. Along with dressing up, the Student Leadership team prepared some lunchtime activities for students to have some fun participating in while celebrating Harmony Day. The activities included a Chinese dance performance from Annabel in Year 5, a Chinese instrument performance on the Guzheng from Olivia in Year 6, Harmony Day Trivia, Colouring in, Origami, Multicultural Games, and finally African Drumming. All these events provided a platform for students to learn about each other’s cultures.

Galatians 3:26-28 says, “So in Christ Jesus, you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptised into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” This verse emphasises the importance of living in unity, as it says we are all one in Christ no matter where we are from. It is also written in Romans 12:16 to “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.” This verse encourages us to not be proud, yet to be humble and accepting of each other.

Harmony Day should not just be a day, but a continuing message of inclusivity and respect for all cultures.

Overall, Harmony Day was a celebration of the fact that ‘Everyone Belongs’ and has a place at Northside. We are blessed with a richness of diversity in our community, what a reflection of the kingdom of God!

Ride2School Day

On 22nd March 2024, Northside participated in the National Ride2School Day, joining over 350,000 students across the country. This event was a step towards promoting healthy habits for our students’ future. Ride2School Day is an initiative by the Bicycle Network aimed at encouraging students to be physically active on their journey to school. With the number of children who are physically active every day dropping significantly over the past 40 years, Ride2School Day seeks to reverse this trend by promoting the benefits of active travel, including riding, walking, scooting, and skating.

The Northside community enthusiastically embraced the spirit of Ride2School Day, with students, teachers, and parents alike discovering the joy of riding and the benefits it brings. Student leaders organised an obstacle course where students could earn house points by completing it. An impressive course, students ran, rode their bikes, and darted around on their scooters, skilfully navigating the course. Students who participated in the morning were given fresh fruit by student leaders. The day was not only fun but also promoted physical fitness and teamwork among our students.

As we reflect on the success of Ride2School Day, we are reminded of our responsibility to guide students in making wise choices for their physical health. By promoting active travel, we are teaching our students the importance of taking care of the bodies God has given them.

Psalm 32:8 states, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you”, reminding us of the significance of guiding students in making wise choices not just for their academic knowledge but also for their physical health.

In conclusion, Ride2School Day was a resounding success. It was a day of learning, fun, and most importantly, a step towards a healthier future. We look forward to participating in this event in the coming years and continuing to promote active travel among our students.

Receptionists Day

On 8th May 2024, our Student Representative Council (SRC) took the opportunity to honour our school Receptionists and Administration staff in recognition of Receptionists Day. Organised by Marshel, Melissa and Siddhant, they surprised the Receptionists and Administration staff by decorating the Reception area with balloons, a banner, and more, transforming it into a vibrant and welcoming space.

As the Receptionists are the first faces our visitors, teachers and students see, their roles become the pillars of support and warmth for our school community. We believe that this celebration is necessary as the efforts of all of Northside’s reception and Administration Teams may sometimes go unnoticed. The SRC’s thoughtful gesture not only brightened their day but also served as a reminder of the gratitude we hold for our Receptionists’ and Administration Teams work.

Thank you, Receptionists and Administration Teams, for all that you do!

Year 2 Zoo Excursion

Year 2 is the year of animals! We get to read four amazing animal novels across the year, learn about animals and how to write reports about them in Term 2, and to highlight the importance of animals we head to the Melbourne Zoo to spend a day in their world with them. The students got to explore behind the scenes at the Zoo during our Education Session with real Zoo Keepers and explore through play different animal habitats.

We had adventures with butterflies, and monkeys blowing kisses, meeting animals such as the mighty silverback gorillas from our term novel ‘The One and Only Ivan’, and learnt more about the world around us! At the end of the day, the students were amazed at how creative their God must be to create so many beautiful and fantastic animals!

Year 10 visit the Holocaust Museum Senior School

The Year 10 Students visited the Holocaust Museum this term as part of their integrated learning unit, ‘What is Truth’. Students were given the opportunity to connect to our past and learn about the importance of culture, heritage, language and family. They discovered that the Holocaust began before the official date of WWII and that this was a systematic and collaborative genocide of the Jews. Although this was a confronting excursion, filled with the dark reality of human depravity, light still shone in this darkness when we met Paul Grinwald. This man survived the Holocaust when he was just a child by hiding in the South of France. Now a 92 year old man, he spends each week volunteering at the Holocaust museum to tell his story. Our students were able to ask Paul many questions. One particular question was, “Do you now hate the Germans?” Paul replied that he did not hate the Germans but that he had been angry about the world. He went on to further explain that here in Australia he had three very good German friends. He understood that the Holocaust could not be pinned on all the Germans. His final remark to the students was, “There is only one human race. We must not judge but instead get to know one another. Go and show respect to everyone.”

This excursion was meaningful and insightful.

Year 10 Work Experience

Students in Year 10 spread out across Melbourne (and interstate) during Week 8 to participate in a week of work experience. This year it was more difficult than previous years to procure placements and we are thankful for the many employers who took on students. Students learned lessons about their personal preferences for working and were given food for thought for future career selection. Staff were able to visit all students personally except our student placed at the Air Force base outside of Adelaide. We are grateful for parent involvement in these placements and the extra time taken to transport students to and from Work Experience for Week 8. Parental feedback is appreciated as it helps to improve our program.

Students were able to find work experience at a range of different businesses, including local councils and the Royal Australian Air Force.

Senior Formal

On 26th April, the Northside Christian College Senior Formal was a hit among students and staff alike. It always amazes me how music can bring different generations together, and we saw students dancing the night away alongside their equally excited teachers!

The food served was wonderful as always, but the highlight of the night was certainly the unveiling of our Formal Queen and King, Drusilla and Amos.

As our theme this year was Masked Ball, we also honoured the best masks worn by students at each year level; Rose, Year 10, Lara ,Year 11 and Sienna, Year 12. We also had a best dancer category, taken out by Year 10 students Judah and Danielle!

It was such a fun event and we thank God for the opportunity he has given us to celebrate our community in such a fun and exciting way. How blessed we are to provide a safe space for our students to express themselves and share in fellowship with their peers!

Year 3/4 Hooptime

On Friday 3rd May our school participated in a Year 3/4 Hooptime basketball event. There were around 5 or 6 teams with mixed boys and girls. Not everyone got to go but some people from each class did. Each team had a different coach. First, we played different teams from our school, then, we moved on to compete against other schools. It was lots of fun playing mixed teams because if you were a girl you could learn the play style of how boys play basketball, and if you were a boy, you could learn how the girls play. It was an awesome event to attend and I can’t wait to do it again!

Primary School CSEN Soccer Competition

On Monday 13th May, a team of Year 5 and 6 students went to play in the CSEN Soccer Championships. The championship was held at the Darebin International Sports Centre in Thornbury. We played a total of four games. We lost 2 games, won 1 and drew 1. Our goal scorers were Elijah, Luca, and Isaiah who scored one goal each, and KJ who scored two goals. Colin showed exceptional skills in defending and Isaiah was chosen as Most Valuable Player. We worked very well as a team, with great support from our teachers, to secure a 3rd place medal.

Primary Athletics Carnival

On Thursday 9th May Northside’s Year 3 – 6 students spent the day at the Upper Primary Athletics Carnival. It was so much fun. My friends and I had an awesome time! The weather was very nice and sunny during the carnival, which was good. Meadowglen Athletics Track has a canteen that was quite popular, and the chips were amazing. The events were discus, shot put, long jump, triple jump, high jump, 100m, 400m, 800m, and novelty activities. The novelty activities were in-house groups and each activity was 3 rounds; the activities were dress-up, racing, and a relay race. My favourite activity was dressing up because my team almost won! Out of all the events that I participated in my favourite was the long jump. It was an amazing experience during all the events, everyone was cheering each other on even if they weren’t in the same house group. It was the best when the 100m happened and everyone was cheering so loud it was impossible to hear anything. It was just so encouraging for everyone!

It was a very successful day and congratulations to the Courageous Conquerors for an outstanding win with 904 points. In 2nd we have Noble Knights with 903 points and last but not least we have Worthy Warriors with 692 points. Congratulations to everyone for giving it a red-hot go!

Athletics Carnival Secondary

On Friday 10th May, the College community gathered for the Secondary School Athletics Carnival. The weather was perfect: setting the stage for a day filled with fun, friendly competition, and for some, final memories. Many students had the chance to showcase their God-given talents and were uplifted and encouraged by their peers and teachers. The atmosphere was electric as we witnessed several records broken, students achieving personal bests, and friends rallying around each other, urging them to surpass their physical limits. It was a particularly special occasion for the Year 12s, as they made their last run down the track, receiving a heartfelt send-off from the College community. We’re immensely grateful for the dedication of the Sports Department, teachers, staff, volunteers, and even past students whose efforts made this day special. Congratulations to Courageous Conquerors for winning the 2024 Secondary Athletics Carnival.

INSPiRE

Year 9/10 BrainSTEM

Our Year 9/10 BrainSTEM Elective has been diving into entrepreneurship with exciting excursions to RMIT’s Activator Hub. Students have attended twice, at the end of last term and in April.

Last term, students learned about pitching to investors, patent design and refining business strategies. They explored the importance of knowing who your customers are and that investors don’t just look at business viability and profit, but business owner’s character. This term, students attended a masterclass on Agile implementation in startups. Students heard about agile frameworks, such as Hypothesis-Driven Development and Design Sprints, because in business things change rapidly and it’s crucial to have the skills and systems to respond to changes and continuously improve to stay ahead of the game.

These experiences have sparked creativity and problem-solving skills, thanks to interactions with industry experts. We’re grateful to RMIT’s Activator Hub and presenters for their valuable mentorship.

Guest Speaker Pat Steele visits Northside

On Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th April, a guest speaker, Pat Steele, came to the College to speak to our Years 7-8 and 9-10 students respectively. Pat Steele is a missionary through Youth For Christ Australia (below).

The focus of Pat’s message was around the theme of saying “’Yes’ to Jesus and ‘No’ to everything else.” Pat was in Melbourne to launch Episode 3 of the ‘Made in Jesus’ documentary film series. This film series tells the stories of young men and women. His presentation to the students included a snippet from ‘Made in Jesus’ as well as presenting the students with the gospel message through the 3 circles tool. Many students made first time and recommitment decisions to follow Christ.

Pat also attended our Whole School ANZAC Assembly and stayed on for Vision Prayer for Secondaries on Wednesday. Our Vision Prayer group (established in 2017) meets every Wednesday lunch to pray and were encouraged to meet at the Flagpoles for this session. While praying, a real sense that God was with us was felt and the students were encouraged to ask God to give them a vision for the school. It was exciting to hear what our young men and women are dreaming and envisioning for Northside Christian College (Joel 2:28).

Pat’s life experience, testimony and hope in Jesus was refreshing to see and hear. The students were repeatedly encouraged that their generation will do amazing things, especially if they say “Yes” to Jesus.

College Tours

Did you know we hold College Tours? The College Tours are a fantastic way to experience the community at Northside Christian College and to also get a better sense as to whether Northside is the right fit for your family.

If you have a friend or family member that is interested in checking out Northside, please let them know to check for tours on the Northside Enrolments page on our website.
