Tony’s Take TIME TO PARK KELLY & THE NUSS BUS

The oversized vehicle carrier that provided a Caravana of defensive talent to LSU this year needs to be recalled to pick up an overpriced and obviously defective unit. The highly regarded Nuss Bus has so many problems it would be difficult to list them all. But they can be summarized in the NIL-fueled Raisin’ Canes commercial when the RC drive-thru order taker informs Doug Nussmeier that his order has already been called in by his father who questioned Doug’s ability to make a decision.

It was probably a mistake to elevate Nussmeier to Jayden Daniels or Joe Burrow status in the populis mind because Nuss only has about half of those decision-making or physical skill sets. It’s been evident even through the rose-colored glasses of viewing the Clemson victory in August. Nuss is not quick in any sense of the word and his support staff on offense so overrated as well that the so-called offense from the Tiger lair has been as painful to watch this year as the Matt House-led defense was in 2023. Head Coach Brian Kelly put a seven-figure check in the NIL gumbo pot to stockpile defensive talent but Kelly’s ability to cook a truly satisfying football meal remains suspect. Kelly’s only sniff at a national championship was shipwrecked completely by Nick Saban more than a decade ago and nothing really has changed with this New York Irishman.

The myriad problems with his offensive line, receivers and running backs shows that LSU has not really solved any of its deep-seated problems. What once was a competitive and confident football team has finally realized that they can’t drink the Kool-Aid of modern college football and think their way to a major championship. Most of the country went along for the ride this year, including the recently retired Lee Corso. But in the famous words of this football broadcast icon, “not so fast, my friend!”

Fortunately the Tigers have a week off to try and triage their wounds. But an overrated South Carolina team has emerged from the repair shop with much revenge on their minds the week after when they come to town and then the Tigers must go to Nashville and face a truly dangerous Vanderbilt squad before returning to Baton Rouge and hosting a loaded Texas A&M team.

Seriously, we’re looking at an LSU team that deservedly belongs in the lower echelons of the SEC. There are simply too many DIY projects that will keep LSU in the “meh” middle of SEC play. LSU has regressed since that emotionally-driven victory in Clemson in August where both ticket and hotel room prices were unrealistic for this overhyped game.

Expect LSU to lose at least three more games this year (Alabama, Oklahoma and A&M) and have big troubles in the rest with the possible exceptions of Arkansas and Western Kentucky. So don’t plan any functions between now and the second week in November that depend on a LSU victory. There’s really no vision or leadership talents in Baton Rouge this season that can change it. Move over, Clemson and Florida. This former national championship program shares most of your recent karma. Which brings us back to Caravana, where a recently touted Heisman candidate will finish his career on the back streets, well off the highway leading to Championship City. An Uber slowly weaving among the turbo vehicles of Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon, Georgia, Penn State and Oklahoma.

ADD FALL COLOR WITH ORNAMENTAL PEPPER PLANTS

Ornamental pepper plants have been increasing in popularity over the last several years. This makes a lot of sense in South Louisiana where “the pepper” has been infused with local culture for hundreds of years. The red, orange, yellow, and green colors of ripe pepper fruits also fit in well with harvest season décor and fall color schemes. In 2022, the LSU AgCenter promoted all ornamental peppers varieties in the Louisiana Super Plant Program. Home improvement stores, plant nurseries, and garden centers have picked up on this recent trend and now market ornamental peppers with other fall related plant material like crotons, chrysanthemums, and sunflowers.

Researchers currently agree that the pepper plant originated from Mexico and other areas in Western Central America. This offers a little explanation of why they are seen almost everywhere around South Louisiana. They can definitely take the heat! A lot of folks are having success with planting ornamental pepper plants in the later summer months where the plants easily establish themselves in the hot growing conditions and then as the days start to shorten and daily temperatures slowly reduce, they start flowering. They will put on a show during the months of October, November, and into December during mild winters.

Most people think of peppers when growing a vegetable garden but that is not the case anymore. Peppers are now being grown for their fruit color, fruit size, and foliage color. Potted ornamental pepper plants can be used alongside bales of hay, gourds, pumpkins, and corn stalks to make a nice fall display on the front porch. Ornamental peppers can be used to create interest in mixed container plantings. Their compact growth size can be used as a filler plant or some of more interesting-colored peppers can be used as a thriller plant to draw attention to the container. Don’t forget that these pepper plants can be used in a flower bed situation. Create a design using ornamental peppers along with seasonal bedding plants in your landscape beds this fall.

Ornamental peppers will thrive in areas that are well-drained and receive full sunlight. Due to their current popularity, you’ll find many different varieties while shopping garden centers this season. ‘Purple Flash’ produces gorgeous, variegated foliage in shades of purple. ‘Midnight Fire’ produces deep purple-black foliage which contrasts with dark red fruits. ‘Black Hawk Hybrid’ produces green leaves and bright red fruits that start out black. The ‘Chilly Chilli’ pepper produces 2–4-inch fruit in shades of yellow, green, orange and red. Add a whimsical look your patio using ‘Hot Pops Purple’ peppers. They produce small, round purple and orange peppers that look like they came out of Dr. Seuss story! So much variety that there is literally something for everyone.

Think about using ornamental pepper plants in your landscape this season. They’re an easy to grow plant with lots of newly released varieties on the market. We’ve listed some of the standouts above but make sure to check out what your local garden center has to offer. You won’t be disappointed.

Hope you all are doing well and crafting away getting ready for those craft shows and upcoming holidays. I can hardly believe we are almost in October! This year is flying by. I know I was supposed to share the last coaster with yall but life (personal things and work) got in the way and I did not get a chance to finish it. So I decided to share one of the flower bouquets that I made. Sitting at home is not something I can do. I would rather be out working and after losing my job after Achilles Tendon surgery and recovery, I got a part time job in a hospital gift shop. One of my duties is flower arranging. That is one thing that is right up my alley!

The bouquet pictured has one blue hydrangea, pink carnations, orange spray roses, lavender cushion mums, purple daisies, pink alstroemeria, and a little green foliage. The flowers are grouped in bouquet bunches but I have to admit I do make changes to what goes into the final design. That’s just the way I am. Good thing I have an understanding manager and he allows me to indulge in my creativity. The patient loved the bouquet and said it made her feel better. That’s what it’s all about!

Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, everything is not always what it seems! This offense and specifically Garrett Nussmeier are hurting and need to find a way to make the pain go away. Harlem Berry needs to get way more touches and stay on the field longer. The defense is fine but needs a breather once in a while and can not live up to its potential with the offense having three and outs.

In Oxford on Saturday afternoon, No. 13 Ole Miss pulled off a tense and hard-fought 24-19 upset of No. 4 LSU, handing the Tigers their first loss of the 2025 season. The Rebels improved to 5–0 overall and 3–0 in SEC play, while LSU dropped to 4–1 and 1–1 in the conference.

First Half: LSU strikes early, Ole Miss responds LSU drew first blood. On their second possession, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier saw his pass tipped but then caught by Nick Anderson in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown, giving the Tigers a 7–0 lead. Ole Miss countered with a long, clock-eating drive of 18 plays and 83 yards, though it ended in just a 25-yard Lucas Carneiro field goal to make it 7–3.

Midway through the second quarter, Ole Miss’ Wydett Williams Jr. intercepted Nussmeier deep in Rebel territory, halting what looked like a promising LSU drive. Later, on a drive in near LSU territory, Ole Miss fumbled near the goal line, with LSU’s Whit Weeks recovering it in the end zone for a touchback – a big defensive break.

But Ole Miss struck back. Behind some generous penalties called against LSU, the Rebels converted a five-play, 70-yard drive capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by Kewan Lacy to go up 10–7. Then just before halftime, Ole Miss drove 69 yards on nine plays, and quarterback Trinidad Chambliss found Cayden Lee on a 2-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 17–7 going into the break.

Flooring, Electrical, Plumbing. 25 years experienced crew. Call 228-332-7024

PERCY THAMES Concrete: Forming, slabs, driveways, roofing. Free estimates. 601-5438712.

LSU’s offense was held in check: in the first two quarters, they managed just 126 yards of total offense.

Second Half: LSU chips away, Ole Miss holds firm

LSU opened the second half with a response. Starting in better field position, they mounted an eightplay drive and got a 39-yard field goal from Damian Ramos, cutting the deficit to 17–10. Then, after Ole Miss turned the ball over via an interception (Chambliss picked off by PJ Woodland), LSU again capitalized, this time on a 48-yard Ramos field goal to make it 17–13.

Ole Miss responded in the fourth quarter with a sustained 11-play, 75-yard drive. Chambliss mixed in big pass plays and ground yards, and Logan Diggs capped it with a 6-yard touchdown run to push the margin back to 24–13.

LSU wasn’t done. They embarked on their most productive drive of the day: 15 plays covering 80 yards, finishing with a 6-yard run by Harlem Berry. They tried a two-point conversion to cut it to a field goal game, but the attempt failed — Ole Miss defender Suntarine Perkins crushed Ju’Juan Johnson short of the line. That left the score at 24–19.

With just over five minutes remaining, Ole Miss ran a deliberate ground-based drive, consuming clock and forcing LSU to burn timeouts. On a final fourth-and-3 from their own 20s, Chambliss hit Dae’Quan Wright in the left flat for a 20-yard catch—and that clinched it. Chambliss kneeled three times and the Rebels escaped to victory.

What it means & what’s next:

This was a statement win for Ole Miss. Beating a top-5 LSU in the Magnolia Bowl while both teams entered undefeated adds real momentum to the Rebels’ season. For LSU, the loss exposes serious offensive cracks — the run game being nearly nonfunctional — and raises questions about consistency against elite opponents.

Up next, both teams have bye weeks. Ole Miss will next host Washington State on October 11. LSU also returns October 11, when they’ll host South Carolina. HUMMING BIRDS

Ruby-throated hummingbirds can be seen in Mississippi from March to No-vember during their migration north. Dur-ing the colder months, December- Febru-ary, these hummingbirds return to Central and South America. Hummingbirds are great pollinators for native plants, crops, and landscape flowers. Plants like petu-nia, begonia, nasturtium, and zinnia are great annuals to attract hummingbirds. Other perennials and shrubs hummingbirds are fond of include butterfly weed, lanta-na, azaleas and salvia.

• Provide food. A bright red feeder with sugar water will attract them, but hum-mingbirds need a variety of energy sources, including insects and nectar. They feed on spiders and all sorts of flying insects, so be judicious with pesticides.

• Provide water. Hummingbirds drink as much as eight times their body weight per day. Offer them safe, shallow sources by placing stones in a birdbath. The also like misters that can be attached to a standard garden hose.

• Provide shelter. A mix of shrubs and trees will provide a range of deep shade, partial shade and open, sunny areas. Hummingbirds perch most of the day and need areas to rest, cool off, warm up, and survey food sources safely.

• Provide nesting areas and materials. Hummingbirds use lichen, plant fibers, spider webs, and other natural materials to build nests in shrubs, trees and vines in low traffic areas.

Hummingbird food recipe

1. Mix one part refined white sugar with four parts water that has been boiled for two minutes. Boiling kills any bacteria that may cause the mixture to spoil quicker.

2. Mix until sugar is dissolved.

3. Cool before pouring into the bird feeder.

TRADITIONAL GARDENING

Gardening means different things to different people. Thousands view gardening as a hobby, a relaxing escape from the pressures of an urban environment. For these people, the food produced may be almost secondary. Growing fresh vegeta-bles, herbs, or fruits provides a great sense of joy and accom-plishment. A vegetable garden can also reduce the family’s food budget, and it can be a source of hard-to-find vegetables. One of the main reasons that people garden is that vegetables from the supermarket cannot compare in taste, quality, or freshness with vegetables grown in the home garden.

The vegetable garden has traditionally been located in an area separate from other parts of the landscape, because it was considered unsightly. With proper planning, however, the garden can be both function-al and attractive. Landscape designers today often incorporate the home landscape and ornamental plants such as flowering annuals into the vegetable garden. This gardening philosophy, coupled with our favorable climate, can offer gardening opportunities nearly all year long.

If you are a beginning gardener with an average-sized family, you will not need a lot of space for a vegetable garden. An area 25 feet square should be adequate. Be careful not to start with too large a space; it is easy to “bite off more than you can chew.”

Regardless of size, there are factors to consider in selecting a garden site. The first is sunlight. All vegetables need some sunlight. The garden should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Eight to 10 hours each day is ideal. Vegetables should therefore be planted away from the shade of buildings, trees, and shrubs. Some leafy vegetables such as broccoli, collards, spinach, and lettuce tolerate shadier conditions than other vegetables, but if your garden does not receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily, you will not be successful growing vegetables.

The second consideration is distance from the house. The closer the vegetable garden and the easier it is to reach, the more you will probably use it. You will be likely to harvest vegetables at their peaks and thus take maximum advantage of garden freshness. It is also more likely that you will keep up with jobs such as weeding, watering, insect and disease control, and succession planting if the garden is close. The third consideration is soil. You do not need to have the ideal type of soil to grow a good garden. If possible the soil should be fertile and easy to till, with just the right texture -- a loose, well-drained loam. Avoid any soil that remains soggy after a rain. Heavy clay and sandy soils can be improved by adding organ-ic matter. Of course, gardening will be easier if you start with a naturally rich soil.

The fourth consideration is water. Including rain and irrigation, the garden needs at least 1 inch of water per week. Therefore, it is essential to locate the garden near a spigot or some other water source. The fifth & last consideration is good air drainage. Avoid locating the garden in a low spot such as the base of a hill or the foot of a slope bordered by a solid fence. These areas are slow to warm in the spring, and frost forms more readily in them because cold air cannot drain away. Vegetable gardens located on high ground are more likely to escape light freezes, permitting an earlier start in the spring and a longer harvest in the fall.

BE PREPARED: PROTECTING YOUR PETS DURING DISASTER SEASON

September is Disaster Preparedness Month, and August through October marks the peak severe weather season for the Gulf Coast. Creating an evacuation plan that includes your pets is essential to keeping the entire family safe. One of the best ways to prepare is by building a Disaster-Ready Pet Portfolio with everything your pet may need in case of an emergency.

Disaster-Ready Pet Portfolio Essentials

Current Microchip Information

Ensure your pet’s microchip information is up to date, including primary and emergency contacts. Keep the chip number saved or written down.

Medical History

Store vaccination records, permits, and your veterinarian’s contact details. Many pet-friendly shelters and hotels require this documentation.

Proof of Ownership

If your pet is not microchipped, keep a recent photo of you with your pet along with adoption or licensing papers.

Daily Care Instructions

Write down feeding and medication instructions, plus any notes about allergies or behaviors, in case someone else must care for your pet.

Travel Plan

Prepare a printed list of pet-friendly hotels and shelters along your evacuation route. Conditions on the road can change quickly.

Before any evacuation, it is important to know where to turn for help. Louisiana residents can pre-register for evacuation assistance with their pets by contacting their local Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness for guidance. Building a Disaster-Ready Pet Portfolio provides peace of mind when emergencies strike. For more pet safety tips or to support our disaster response efforts, visit louisianaspca.org

Where is this little guy going? He is much too little to be wandering around by himself at maybe three weeks old. He needs the protection of his mother and the companionship of his littermates at this age. Feral cat mothers have a formidable task, trying to feed, corral and protect their kittens. Most of them do an amazing job, but the larger the litter, the more difficult the task. Feral cat mothers move their litters frequently to keep them safe from predators. Sometimes there is a straggler, as in this case. Fortunately, this little guy was reunited with his littermates. But it is a dangerous life for them out there and many do not survive. Well, that’s nature’s way, some will say. What isn’t nature’s way is for so many people to claim cats as pets but not take care of them. Spaying and neutering are just basic pet care and the surgery can go a long way to prevent pet overpopulation and suffering. Local shelters and rescue groups have information on low cost or free spay/neuter surgery. Please don’t put it off for your kitten.
