Tony’s Take RANKING

THE LSU FOOTBALL COACHES

During their more than 130 years of playing football, the LSU Tigers have had 32 head coaches, 33 if you could the late Bo Rein who was killed in an airplane crash two months after succeeding Charles McClendon after the 1979 season.

Of those, eleven can be considered coaches of the modern era, beginning with the final days of segregated Southern football and the beginnings of televised college games. Three have won national championships and one stand head and shoulders above even the legends of the game’s coaching ranks.

We’ll begin with Number 11. Long considered the worst coach in the history of LSU, Gus “Curly” Hallman only indelible mark from his years in the early 1990’s might belong to a Golden Girl or two. Dubbed “Curly Dullman” by this writer, Hallman led LSU down four years of forgettable football in Tiger Stadium with pre-game interviews that sounded like an Andy Griffith monologue from the 1960’s - over descriptive and dull, hence the nickname. A 16 and 28 record with no postseason play was Hallman’s legacy.

He followed the second worst coach, former LSU All-American halfback Jerry Stovall. Like most players, Stovall should have never entered the coaching arena following successful careers at LSU and with the St. Louis Cardinals NFL team. His persona clashed with players coming into the 1990’s with more high school experience and football knowledge than similar college players even ten years earlier. Stovall barely had a winning record and played in one postseason game…. a loss.

The next coach actually was hired as a desperation move. Even the Times Picayune ran an ad to hire “the head football coach of LSU Baton Rouge.” What LSU got was a semi-raw, relatively inexperienced guy, Mike Archer, who couldn’t continue the record build by his predecessor, Bill Arnsbarger. No one believed Arnsbarger would leave LSU for the Athletic Director’s position at Florida after the 1987 season but Bill was an honest man and the LSU Board of Supervisors had trouble believing the truth in those days, especially after their unceremonious firing of Charlie McClendon after the 1979 season. At least Archer won a postseason game but following Arnbarger was his undoing.

Next was Jerry DiNardo. Again, the Times Picayune ad appeared. Jerry was hired after his Vanderbilt team lost a 62 to nothing contest at the end of the 1994 season. But anyone - even me - would have been an improvement over Hallman. Jerry brought in Kevin Faulk and returned the white home jerseys to LSU, had a winning record and won all three of his postseason bowl games. DiNardo was the last of the old school college coaches who didn’t have to deal with playing freshmen and the newer generation of high schoolers were better than college players even 15 years earlier. The game was evolving away from “old school”.

Now it gets interesting. Unlucky number seven is Lester Miles, the grass grazer, chest gazer, Michigan geezer whose game time decisions were fodder for angst and frustration. Miles coached one great game, an overtime 9 to 6 win over Alabama in 2011 but followed that with perhaps the worst coaching job in LSU history with a 21 to nothing loss against the Tide for the national championship that same year. Like Hallman, Les coveted his distaff staffers and with verbal gaffes not heard since the days of Yogi Berra, Miles was fired twice before it really stuck. He did coach a national championship but his post-LSU career was a disaster, both on the field and in the broadcast booth.

Next is the current coach of the Tigers, Brian Kelly. One national championship game appearance in 12 years at Notre Dame produced an embarrassment the Irish had never experienced before. The only thing more embarrassing to Kelly was his attempt at sounding like a Cajun when he was hired. Four years, one great Heisman player, but no cigar. Three for three in postseason games.

The top five. Begin with the REAL Cajun, Ed Orgeron. This hard-working successful assistant coach finally got the brass ring with his hiring following Miles leaving after the 2016 season. Four and one in postseason games, including the memorable national championship against Clemson in 2019. But his personal life started affecting his professional one and the brawling Bayou boy found himself out but with a 17 million dollar buyout. Orgeron was smart; he stayed out of coaching and keeps to himself for all intents and purposes. The second most colorful coach after Miles.

Number four is the aforementioned Bill Arnsbarger. Bill was the glue between LSU’s two greatest coaches, following the third worst and worst coaches in LSU history. In 1984 through 1986, Arnsbarger built one of the greatest defensive units in LSU history but lack of a great offense led to three postseason losses, including one I witnessed against a great Nebraska team in the Superdome. His desire to return to Florida was honest and refreshing but the Board’s lack of understanding school athlete coaches led to them not preparing for his departure….sort of like a Les Miles game plan.

Number three is Paul Dietzel. Paul followed three Depression/World War Two legends - Biff Jones, Bernie Moore and Gaynell TInsley - all winning coaches during the construction expansion of Tiger Stadium which began in the late 1920’s. Dietzel was a showman and innovator. His creation of three specialty teams for the Tigers and the implementation of the white home jerseys led to their first national championship in the post-War era. With the White Team, The Go Team and the Chinese Bandits, Dietzel put LSU on the national college football map. Behind the greatest LSU football legend, Billy Cannon, the Tigers won the national title in 1958 with a 7-0 squeaker against Clemson.

Now the top two. For 18 years, following Dietzel, Charlie McClendon will always hold the records for wins and postseason appearances for the Tigers. An affable former teammate of Bear Bryant, Charlie Mac could do it all - he won seven of 13 bowl appearances, recruit tough defenders and offensive players. His downfall was against “The Bear”. He couldn’t beat Bryant at Alabama - very few could. And a politically charged, unfair LSU Board of Supervisors threw Charlie on the slag heap after his memorable 1979 season. Well respected in the college game, McClendon, as president of the National College Football Coaches Association, addressed the Columbus, Ohio Touchdown Club one year with “I bring you greetings from the college football capital of the world….Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My choice as number one, you better believe, when I attended LSU.

But the man…the legend….the Process Server…has to be the slightly short, slightly agitated retired college football coach who surpassed them all. Nick Saban is the best of the best. Five years at LSU, one national championship, his tenure bracketed with a road loss to Virginia Tech in 2000 and a Florida bowl loss to Iowa on a last-second play in 2005. Two years of football purgatory in the NFL. Two years of eating crow in Tuscaloosa until the Process was ready to be unleashed. The man who continues to scare the beJesus out of reporters under the age of 30. The man who supplanted Bear Bryant at Alabama. Not bad for an undersized defensive back from West Virginia who played his football at Kent State. But he really learned his success at LSU before bestowing it to that northern Alabama school. Hats off to Nick. The most honest coach I’d ever met at

GROWING POINSETTIAS OUTSIDE

As the end of the year approaches, you will start seeing potted poinsettia plants for sale at your local garden center. You will also see them for sale at big box stores, grocery stores and membership-based stores like Costco and Sam’s Club. These popular plants are commonly given as gifts during the holiday season. Some folks continue to grow them as houseplants while some just throw them away. With proper care, poinsettia plants can be grown outdoors where you can continue to grow them and enjoy their company.

The poinsettia plant has a deep-rooted history with indigenous people of North and Central America. The Aztec people called it cuetlaxochitl and saw it as a symbol of purity. They made fabric dyes out of the red bracts and used the white milky sap as medicine. As Christianity made its way to the new world, the poinsettia plant was adopted for use in a nativity procession, the Fiesta of Santa Pesebre, where folks started to refer to it as la flor de Nochebuena or Holy Night flower. The poinsettia plant naturally flowers in late fall and develop colorful bracts prior to the Christmas season.

The name poinsettia came about when Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779-1851), the first United States Ambassador to the new Republic of Mexico. During his assignment he discovered the beautiful redleaved plant and sent some back home to Charleston, SC, where he continued to grow and propagate the plant, gifting them to friends and family during the holiday season. Eventually, the plant would be named in his honor and the tradition of gifting them for the holidays would continue to this day. The poinsettia plant, Euphorbia pulcherrima, previously known as Poinsettia pulcherrima, is a deciduous to semi-evergreen perennial shrub or small tree in its place of origin, Mexico and Guatemala. It prefers partial shade, enjoying direct sun for 5-6 hours. In the U.S., poinsettias are primarily grown in containers as house plants, but they can be grown outdoors during the warm season. For hobby growers in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11, poinsettias plants are considered winter hardy. This would include most of the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan Area and all the communities along the Gulf Coast.

After the holidays pass, continue watering poinsettia plants to maintain general health and appearance. On or around March 15, start checking extended weather forecasts to learn of any incoming cool fronts. Once the fear of frost is gone, move your poinsettia outside or directly plant it in the ground in an area that receives partial sunlight. Plant it just like you would do any other containerized landscape plant making sure that the top of the root ball sits slightly above the soil level in the bed. Apply a general all-purpose fertilizer several weeks after planting and supplement irrigation as needed during the season to maintain vigor. Prune out or pinch growing tips in summer to encourage lateral branching.

The poinsettia plant will naturally flower in late fall in response to the decreasing light quality and duration during that time of year. Outdoor grown plants will eventually color up, but if you are using container plants, consider moving the plant inside to area where it can receive 12 hours of darkness. That is how commercial greenhouse growers manipulate their crop so that it is in peak aesthetic for the holiday season.

Are you totally focused on Halloween with spooky decoration and the anticipation of Trick or Treaters? Or are you focused on turning back those clocks an hour and preparing for the upcoming All Saints Day and Thanksgiving Holiday? Well, I am thinking about All Saints Day. Even though I no longer have my flower shop I still have a couple of customers I still do cemetery bouquets for along with my own. I had to special order football mums from Columbia as my New Orleans supplier did not have any. Not sure if they sold out or just couldn’t get any. My Mom always insisted on white Football Mums and that is what I wanted. They should be arriving at my door this week. The rest of the flowers I needed I ordered from my local supplier.

A friend did want a Fall Bouquet for her Mom who just had surgery. She wanted a mix of flowers in the arrangement, it had to have sunflowers, a hydrangea, something dark pink, and rest fall colors. I added daisies, cushion mums, alstroemerias, roses, solidago, and purple mums. Really didn’t need any greenery as the flowers had enough of their own to carry everything nicely. I think it turned it really cute.

Well, that’s my craft for this time. What will your next project be?

Mine.....I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, even though the teams I cheer for are really bad right now I am happy. The Saints finally benched Rattler, the Pels will eventually fire Willie Green and LSU ..well let me dive into that…

On a sobering night in Baton Rouge, LSU fell to Texas A&M 49-25, an upset that stings both in margin and in implication. The Tigers entered the game ranked

No. 20 and riding relative confidence at home. Instead, the No. 3 Aggies — led by quarterback Marcel Reed — turned the tide in emphatic fashion. Reed threw two touchdowns and ran for two more, powering A&M’s offense past LSU. Despite being down by just four at halftime (1814), LSU collapsed in the second half. Texas A&M opened with a nine-play, 56-yard burst to take the lead, then added a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown, and kept piling on. The Tigers simply weren’t able to match the tide of momentum. Homefield advantage in “Death Valley” held little sway as the Aggies posted a dominant performance.

On the defensive side, LSU was unable to stop big plays or stem the flood of A&M scoring. The offense likewise stalled at key moments and couldn’t regain control after halftime. The result: one of the more lopsided home losses in recent memory for the Tigers. This game also marked Texas A&M’s first win at Tiger Stadium since 1994, further underscoring the upset’s weight.

For LSU, the loss drops them to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in SEC play, casting a long shadow over their conference aspirations. For Texas A&M, the win propels the Aggies to 8-0, maintaining their perfect season thus far and showing they can dominate even in hostile territory.

In short: what began as a rivalry game with promise for LSU instead became a rout. The Tigers must now re-evaluate quickly, while Texas A&M rides high — and the upset reverberates beyond just one scoreboard.

LESS THAN 12 HOUR LATER:

In the wake of the disappointing loss to Texas A&M and amid mounting frustration among the fanbase, LSU announced that Brian Kelly would be relieved of his duties as head coach. While the buy-out is being configured the numbers seem to be in the range of $40-50 million, the move represents a fresh start for a storied program looking to regain its national footing.

The decision offers LSU an opportunity for renewal. Kelly arrived with strong credentials and elevated expectations, but over four seasons, the Tigers never cracked the College Football Playoff and slipped in key matchups. The program now has a blank canvas: a chance to hire new leadership who can energize the roster, appeal to recruits, and re-ignite the stadium atmosphere. Fans, alumni, and players alike can breathe a little easier knowing the era of under-deliverance is over.

Furthermore, the move sends a clear message: tradition, excellence, and performance matter at LSU. The Tigers’ history is rich with championship pedigree, and this change signals a return to those expectations. For the coaching staff and incoming leader, the path is now unburdened by the past. Young players can embrace a new identity; recruits can envision being part of something revived. The program has the momentum of change on its side.

In the broader landscape, while LSU will be absorbing a hefty financial obligation connected to Kelly’s buy-out, the long-term upside is clear. It’s an exciting moment for the Tigers’ community — returning to square one, but with high hopes and renewed energy. For those who root for LSU, this firing is not defeat — it is the first chapter of a renewed mission. Geaux Tigers.

Tony’s Take PAIN WILL BE GONE SOON

**Disclaimer: The following story was written before the firing of Coach Brian Kelly. The information contained therein does not change with the decision to terminate Coach Kelly.

By the time this story gets read, hip joint replacement surgery will have been performed on yours truly. This came about when a misdiagnosed knee problem led to earlier surgery this year that did nothing to relieve my pain.

It took a Mandeville orthopedic surgeon about ten seconds to diagnose my real problem when three other orthopedic doctors fell in line following an x-ray of my arthritic left knee more than two years ago. Despite my objections that my trial knee surgery and the final surgery did not produce the results they promised, I was given no hope that things might not have been properly diagnosed and that I was told how I should feel, not how things could have been changed.

There’s no guarantee that the hip surgery will do what it should but I believe it will. If not, then my days of writing this column will be coming to an end.

So? Replace the gist of what I just described with LSU football in 2022-2025, complete with Brian Kelly’s hiring. Kelly is a Massachusetts Irishman, with a fine coaching pedigree but with a lack of one thing: inspiring people. His stepbrother approached me about getting tickets to LSU football games when Kelly was named the coach in 2022. When I asked him why he just didn’t get them directly from his stepbrother, this gentleman told me they had no real relationship; they had the same mother but his father was Kelly’s mother’s second husband. Brian was the older brother and they weren’t on speaking terms.

Kelly in another life would either be a blue or white collar Middle American worker. His lack of a real personality and the ability to create commitment, passion and dedication is way off the scale that a national championship coach should have. Twelve years at Notre Dame and one highly embarrassing loss to Alabama is all Kelly has shown. And after this season, it is apparent that Kelly passed his peak many years ago.

The second half of LSU’s game against Texas A&M was Les Miles-ish in its resemblance to the preparation the former Hat displayed before LSU’s 2011 national championship game against Alabama. The only thing Miles ever kept abreast of were breasts….or chests….or hooters, take your choice. Kelly seems to be cut from the same lack of meaningful concentration to the task at hand. Kelly’s quest for a national championship brass ring died completely October 25th, fittingly on his birthday. And he needs to get that fact off his chest. It’s over, Brian. Settle with LSU at the end of this season and say bye-bye. We’ll miss you, Paqui.

The timing of a season ticket price hike for 2026 and the complete closure of all LSU on-campus parking except for the privileged permit holders for the rest of this season because of a shooting incident on the south campus was brilliant. Hey, LSU brain trust! Guess what?! Don’t worry about inconveniencing your proletariat fan base; they won’t be coming to games in November. Or next year with higher prices and Kelly at the helm. After Alabama dismantles what’s left of LSU’s pride on November 8th in Tuscaloosa, it might as well be Covid season for games against Western Kentucky and Arkansas.

Then the Tigers get to go to the heart of tornado country - Moore, Oklahoma - to face a pretty ordinary Oklahoma squad with their overrated quarterback to finish the season. Don’t hold your breathe for more than 3,000 Tiger fans to attend any bowl game as well. But central Oklahoma in mid-autumn is pretty and if you can plan a trip to any of their state parks for fishing in conjunction with the football game, then the trip will be well worth it. Go there.

And enjoy their barbecue, steaks and chops. Both LSU and Oklahoma football coaches probably will be on the rotisserie before Christmas.

POND DRAWDOWNS FOR WEED & FISH MANAGEMENT

One of the most useful and inexpensive pond management practices is called a “winter drawdown”. Winter drawdowns can be useful in controlling aquatic weeds and can help manipulate fish populations. To perform a winter drawdown, make sure the pond has a drain pipe that lets the water levels be lowered and kept down throughout the winter. Ponds without a drainpipe can be retrofitted.

Aquatic weed problems are common in farm ponds and usually are challenging to manage. Winter draw-down exposes weeds to air-drying and freezing temperatures. This can be an effective weed control technique, especially if done in successive years.

For effective weed control, drop the water level of the pond to expose aquatic weeds in the more shallow portions of the pond. Usually, water levels are reduced enough to expose 35 to 50 percent of the pond bottom, but this percentage may vary greatly, depending on topography and design of the pond. Maximum draw-down should be accomplished by mid to late November, and the water level should remain low through Febru-ary. Spring rains will fill the pond. The combination of a winter drawdown, shoreline deepening, and effective early spring herbicide application usually eliminates or greatly reduces aquatic weed infestations. Fish attractors, such as brush tops and gravel beds, can be more easily put in place while the water is down, and this is a good time to deepen edges to the recommended minimum depth of 3 feet.

Winter drawdown is also a good fish population management technique in largemouth bass/bluegill ponds. By reducing the water level and pond area, you drive forage fish, such as bluegill, out of shallow water refuges and concentrate them in open water, making them more available for bass to eat. This is a good technique to use in ponds having “crowded bluegill” but still containing viable bass populations. Routine annual drawdowns can help maintain a balanced bass/bluegill fishery. However, drawdowns can make bass crowded situations worse. If you have a bass-crowded pond, do not use winter drawdowns until pond balance is re-stored.

Drawdowns should be done only in the winter, however, never in summer as the extreme temperatures in Mississippi summers, coupled with the increased activity level of fish and reduced oxygen levels in warm water, will likely result in fish kills in a summer drawdown.

HALLOWEEN TREATS THAT MAKE YOUR PETS TAIL WAG

Halloween is all about dressing up, having fun, and enjoying a bag full of treats after a night of trick-or-treating. However, as tempting as it may be to share some of those goodies with your pets, it’s best to keep the sweets to yourself. Popular candies like Hershey bars, Jolly Ranchers, Sour Patch Kids, and Blow Pops may taste great to us humans, but they can be harmful to our furry friends. Even gum, hard candies, and candy wrappers can cause serious health issues if ingested by our pets. So, this Halloween, let’s keep our pets safe by keeping our Halloween treats out of reach and giving our furry friends pet-friendly treats to snack-on instead.

Halloween Staples to Avoid for Your Pets

Chocolate – Chocolate is highly toxic to dogs and cats, regardless of whether it is milk, white, or dark chocolate. Always keep it far away from your pets.

Hard Candy and Lollipops – Hard candy and lollipops pose choking hazards and can damage pets’ teeth. Also, the sticks on lollipops can block airways, and high sugar content from both candies can make our pets nauseated.

Chewing Gum and Candy with Xylitol – Candies containing xylitol can be life-threatening for our pets. All it takes is a very small amount of xylitol, and within less than an hour, it can cause drops in blood sugar, seizures, and even death in pets, especially for dogs.

Candy Wrappers – Even empty candy wrappers can be risky for pets, as they can cause intestinal blockages and may still have candy residue that is harmful if eaten. Now that we know what to avoid, it’s easy to include your pets safely in Halloween fun. Since they are part of the family, consider giving them pet-friendly treats made just for them. This way, everyone can enjoy this year’s spooky festivities and create memorable moments together.

Fun Treats for Your Pet This Spooky Season

Pumpkin Tuna Bites for Cats

Celebrate the season with a pumpkin-themed treat that combines Halloween fun with your cat’s favorite flavors. You’ll need 1/4 cup canned pumpkin (unsweetened), 1/2 cup canned tuna in water, drained, and 1 tablespoon whole wheat flour. Mix the ingredients all together, form small pumpkin-shaped balls, and chill before serving to your feline bestie.

Frozen Candy Corn Bones for Dogs

’Tis the season for banana-flavored, candy corn–inspired treats shaped like bones, perfect for our puppy pals! You’ll need 1 ripe banana, 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt, and 1/4 cup canned pumpkin (unsweetened). Layer the ingredients in a bone mold and freeze for up to three hours.

For other types of pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, parrots, or horses, pet-friendly Halloween treats can include dried fruits, carrots, chopped apples, and other safe fruits and vegetables. Always research any new foods before serving them to your pet. This Halloween, let’s keep our furry firends safe by choosing treats that are healthy and pet-friendly. If you’re looking for a companion to share the holiday with, visit the Louisiana SPCA campuses in New Orleans or Belle Chasse, or check out who’s available for adoption online at www.louisianaspca.org/ adopt.
