NINERS GET THE STEAL OF THE DRAFT AGAIN WITH SCHRADER

The name of Missouri’s Cody Schrader was not heard in Detroit last week when several hundred former collegiate stalwarts were selected during the seven round NFL Draft process. Not much drama or real surprises entered the area for any team.

The Saints made one of the best hauls in choosing one of the three best offensive linemen in the draft from Oregon State, an Alabama defensive back with a “Kool” nickname and perhaps the steal of the quarterback room when they picked up Spencer Rattler from South Carolina. Rattler was unimpressive in a mop up role at Oklahoma when LSU demolished the Sooners in Atlanta in their most dominate game of their championship 2019 season. But Rattler was the choice of one major publication to be the Heisman Trophy favorite before the 2020 Covid season and injuries and pressure to follow in the footsteps of three straight Oklahoma quarterbacks dropped his stock faster than the 1929 Crash. Congrats to a usually skittish Saints brain trust for choosing him.

Back to Schrader. An undersized and overworked overachiever, Schrader gave perhaps the most stellar performance of the 2023 season by a running back when he helped destroy Tennessee 36 to 7. At 5’ 8” and with a 40 time of 4.61, Schrader won’t win any statistical superlatives. But he gained more than 1,800 yards last year at Missouri and was named to two All American first teams plus receiving consideration for the Doak Walker Award during the voting for the nation’s best running back. This is a blue collar kid, older than most and probably looking at a realistic NFL career of five, perhaps six years. But there’s a lot of Christian McCaffery in Schrader and if he burns out at 30 or 31, well, most people will remember him for what he brought to the field and the locker room. Brag and swag are not Schrader’s trademarks but most old school running legends carried a lunchpail mentality and Schrader is definitely old school. Before his two years at Missouri, Schrader played at Truman State. President Harry Truman was famous for saying “the buck stops here.” Schrader will be famous for thinking “no one will stop this buck when he has the ball.”

He may not be Brock Purdy but when the San Francisco 49ers selected Cody Schrader as a free agent signee, you better believe they thought of capturing lightning in a bottle as they did with “Mr. Irrelevant” two years ago. The NFL didn’t see Schrader’s relevancy during seven rounds of draft selection but watch him in a 49er uniform as he aids the Niners in returning to the Super Bowl with yet another offensive tool.

The Louisiana Super Plant program showcases tried and true plants for Louisiana landscapes. It is a great way for beginning gardeners to learn new plants and for experienced gardeners to recall previous plants. Within that realm, porterweed may be one of the most versatile plants to wear the moniker.

Porterweed, Stachytarpheta spp., is a genus of plants in Verbenaceae, a common plant family that home gardeners should have some familiarity with. The primary species of interest is S. jamaicensis which is native to coastal south Florida and the Caribbean. Traditionally, it was grown as an herb because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Nowadays people are growing it for its ornamental qualities and ecosystem benefits. Porterweeds are some of the best pollinator plants available today. The flowers produce large amounts of nectar which pollinating organisms such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds use as a source of energy. Plants like this should be included in butterfly gardens so that there is ample opportunity for the gardener to view these amazing organisms.

Originating near the equator, porterweeds are tropical plants. In their native climate, they are perennial by nature. However, most gardeners in the U.S. will treat them as annuals due to the lack of cold weather resistance. Don’t be worried though. Gardeners in the southern part of the state with minimal freezing temperatures treat porterweeds as tender perennials. Plants will generally regrow from the root system if freezing weather affects the top portion. Nonetheless, look to add porterweeds in the garden during the first half of spring so that the growing season is maximized.

The plants themselves can range in size. Cultivars stemming from S. jamaicensis are much shorter growing (1-2 ft tall by 2-3 ft wide) than those form S. cayennensis (5-8 ft tall by 3-5 ft wide). Most of the plants seen at local garden centers are labeled with generic porterweed tags and can be somewhat confusing. However, both species produce plants with small tubular shaped flowers on long flower spikes. Flower colors can range from red to white, with most plants offering a dark purple or blue color. Plants should be grown in full sun for optimal flower production.

Porterweeds are quickly moving through the industry. In the past, folks acquired porterweed plants from their crazy plant friends or at plant swaps where pass-a-long plants are traded. Nowadays it’s common to see a few different porterweed plants for sale at the garden center. Look to see more and more of this wonderful landscape plant as you research their availability this growing season. I’d expect to see a few named cultivars in the coming years as some of the larger plant breeding operations release new varieties.

I went out to Gretna Farmers Market and picked up a half flat of strawberries. I decided to make chocolate covered strawberries, both dark and milk chocolate. They were so good! Did you make a special treat for your family?

Well, we haven’t had too many April Showers to bring in those May flowers. But, this little Duck has found a rain shower to make him happy. There are raindrops rolling down his umbrella and he found a puddle to splash in. This is my version of a class I took on the internet. This was so much fun to paint! This is painted on a 6X6 panel board.

I based the panel with Whispering Turquoise. I used a bubble wrap stencil to light stencil on Turquoise Blue first and then very lightly added some white in various areas. Shade the edges of the panel with Turquoise Blue. Traced on the umbrella, duck, and the puddle. Painted the duck and umbrella with my choice of colors, shaded in the puddle, added the rain drops, and lettering with white. Shaded everything with the appropriate colors. After everything was dry, I added Liquid Glass to the raindrops and the puddle. I had so much fun painting this duck that I painted several of these with different colored backgrounds. Yea, I got kinda carried away.

Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.......Well, I will be making prom flowers and Mother’s Day Bouquets. This is my granddaughter’s Senior year of high school and she will be attending two Senior Proms. One on a Friday night the other Saturday night and Mother’s Day on Sunday, Guess I got my work cut out for me. Till next time.................

Well, a new crop of Saints have been both drafted and free agents specifically chosen to potentially join the 2024 team. All those trades in the past left the Saints with only two picks in the top 100 of the draft and they went over 100 selections in between their own picks at one point. For as few draft assets as they came into the draft with, the Saints seemed to have fared pretty well. Let’s take a deeper look into these players.

Draft picks:

Round 1, Pick 14: Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon State

Fuaga, a 6-6, 324lb junior from Tacoma, Wash., earned multiple first team All-American honors in 2023. A standout in the Pac-12, he received first team All-Pac-12 accolades and was recognized as a Polynesian Player of the Year finalist. He was a semifinalist for the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award in 2023. Throughout his junior year, Taliese helped his team average nearly 170 yards per game rushing.

Round 2, Pick 41: Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama

After trading up four spots in Round 2, the New Orleans Saints selected cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry from Alabama with the 41st pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Friday, April 26, 2024.

McKinstry, a 6-foot-1 junior from Birmingham, Ala., was one of the nation’s top corners who also contributed at punt returner for the Crimson Tide. He was selected as a first team All-American by the Associated Press and The Sporting News in addition to being selected as a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented each year to the nation’s top defensive back. In 2023, McKinstry broke up seven passes to go with 32 tackles, including two for loss (-4 yards) as well as returned 14 punts for 86 combined yards with a long gain of 33.

Round 5, Pick 150: Spencer Rattler, QB, South Carolina

Rattler, 6 feet, 211 pounds, spent two seasons with the Gamecocks after beginning his collegiate career at Oklahoma. He played in 48 career contests, posting a 28-14 record in 42 career starts while completing 900-of-1,313 career passes (68.5 pct.) for 10,807 yards with 77 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. He threw at least one touchdown pass in 32 of his 42 career starts and finished his Gamecock career fifth all-time in passing yards with 6,212. He also ranked first in Carolina history in career completion percentage (.675), fifth in career completions (523) and ninth in career passing touchdowns (37) despite playing just two seasons in the Garnet & Black.

Round 5, Pick 170: Bub Means, WR, Pittsburgh

The New Orleans Saints selected wide receiver Bub Means from Pittsburgh with the 170th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Means, a 6-foot-2 senior from Lovejoy, Ga., played in all 12 games for the Panthers in 2023, starting 10 at wide receiver. He was an honorable mention All-ACC, compiling 41 receptions for 721 yards (17.6 avg.) and six touchdowns. Means led Pitt in receiving yards and TD catches with his 75-yard touchdown catch at Virginia Tech marking a career-long reception and was the Panthers’ longest of the season.

Round 5, Pick 175: Jaylan Ford, LB, Texas

The New Orleans Saints selected linebacker Jaylan Ford from Texas with the 175th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Ford, a 6-foot-3 senior from Frisco, Texas, was a four-year linebacker who played in 49 games with 29 starts for the Longhorns. He was named a 2022 third-team All-American by The Associated Press and a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2022 and 2023. Ford racked up four interceptions in 2022 to tie for the Texas season record for a linebacker, which was last accomplished by Derrick Johnson in 2002 and 2003. He was also tabbed the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football and earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors in 2021.

Round 6, Pick 199: Khristian Boyd, DL, Northern Iowa

The New Orleans Saints selected defensive tackle Khristian Boyd from Northern Iowa with the 199th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Boyd, a 6-foot-2 senior from Kansas City, MO, played in all 11 games for the Northern Iowa Panthers, recording 43 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss with 3.5 sacks. He was named third-team Associated Press FCS All-American as well as first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2023. In 2022, he was also named to the second-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference. Boyd has a career 149 total tackles for the Panthers, 22.5 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks.

Round 7, Pick 239: Josiah Ezirim, OL, Eastern Kentucky

The New Orleans Saints selected offensive tackle Josiah Ezirim from Eastern Kentucky with the 239th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Ezirim, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound senior from Hilliard, Ohio, was named third-team Associated Press FCS All-American as well as first-team All-United Athletic Conference after starting 11 games at right tackle. As a junior, he played in all 12 games with the Colonels and was part of an offensive line that helped EKU rank third nationally in passing offense per game (329.7), fifth in third-down conversion percentage (.519), 10th in total offense per game (451.3), 11th in scoring offense (36.2), and 18th in red zone offense (.879). Ezirim and the offensive line helped EKU tally its highest point total in program history.

Un-Drafted Free Agent Selections:

Idaho WR/KR Jermaine Jackson

The Saints always seem to use the undrafted free agent period to unearth a gem of a return man, and they might’ve done it again. The 5-7, 170-pound Jackson put up solid numbers as a receiver, but he was special as a returner, averaging 30.4 yards on kick returns and 16.4 yards on punt returns in his career.

Vanderbilt P Matthew Hayball

The 2nd Best Undrafted Specialist available. Hayball was a finalist for the Ray Guy award and finished sixth nationally in punting average (47.6 yards per punt) last season.

Nebraska OG Nouredin Nouili

A Frankfurt, Germany native, Nouili started 11 games for the Cornhuskers last season, with the majority coming at right guard. He joined Nebraska as a walk on.

Colorado State TE Dallin Holker

Best Undrafted Tight End Available, Holker, a 2023 All- American was voted a team captain in his lone season in Fort Collins. Projects as a player who best fits working out of the slot. Holker went from littleused at BYU to a star at CSU. His 64 catches for 767 yards and six touchdowns helped him become a finalist for the Mackey Award, which was won by first-round pick Brock Bowers.

Boston College OG/OC Kyle Hergel

A Toronto native, Hergel played at three schools in college (North Dakota, Texas State and Boston College). He allowed just two quarterback hurries while playing 12 games at left guard for the Eagles last year.

Yale WR Mason Tipton

The Yale product enjoyed a fine senior season at Yale, where he led the Ivy League in touchdown receptions (10), ranking sixth in the FCS.

Oklahoma State EDGE Nathan Latu

The 6-foot-4 Latu recorded 7 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss in his last two years at Oklahoma State.

Slippery Rock WR Kyle Sheets

Sheets has good size (6-2, 217), decent speed (4.52-second 40-yard dash) and he put up great numbers at a small school with 76 catches, 1,186 yards and 17 touchdowns.

TCU S Millard Bradford

Bradford spent five seasons at TCU after transferring there from Fork Union Military Academy. He had four career interceptions and didn’t allow a touchdown last season. Though listed as a safety, he played nickel cornerback last season.

Tulane C Sincere Haynesworth

Haynesworth gets to stay in New Orleans after playing five years at Tulane. He’s coming off a season in which he was named first-team All-AAC.

Minnesota DL Kyler Baugh

Baugh lacks height for his position at 6-foot-1, but he tested well with a 4.96 40-yard dash and 33.5 vertical jump for a Relative Athletic Score of 8.56. He played two seasons at Minnesota after transferring from Houston Baptist.

ULL RB Jacob Kibodi

12th Best Undrafted Running Back Available, led ULL in rushing with 729 yards and seven touchdowns on 129 carries, as well as nine receptions for 79 yards and another score.

Pittsburgh State DB Rico Payton

Rico Payton is coming off a season with the Gorillas where he had 35 tackles (23 solo), 4 INT’s and 16 pass break-ups! Payton was named as a 2023 NCAA Division II 2nd Team All-American by the AFCA! He was also a nominee for the Division II 2023 Cliff Harris Award, which is awarded to the Small College Defensive Player of the Year.

South Dakota State LB Isaiah Stalbird

The hybrid D-back measured at 6-feet and 221 pounds, and then killed it at his Pro Day. After posting a 37.5-inch vertical jump, Stalbird showed his explosiveness with a 127” broad jump and flirted with a 4.40-second time in both attempts in the 40-yard dash.

SE Missouri St DB Lawrence Johnson

Johnson, who is from St. Louis, garnered Second-Team Big South-OVC Association accolades. He was the Redhawks second-leading tackler with 73, including 47 solo stops. Johnson collected 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. A sixth-year player, Johnson ended his outstanding career with 283 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and two interceptions.

Though, there were not many flashy choices, the Saints did a great job of getting people who filled team needs. They did this without giving away future picks and actually gaining a few. They literally have 2 players that will plug in as starters on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Not to mention, a quarterback who will more than likely not only make the team but potentially vie for the back-up spot.

There are 6-10 undrafted free agents who will make this squad and potentially 3-5 who will not only

make the team but could potentially play lots of minutes for the Saints this season. Don’t forget, you are invited to check out our sports only podcast. LASPCA’s support extends beyond owned pets to community cats as well. Services such as ear tipping and rabies vaccinations for these cats are covered by the Feral Cat Fund, aiding in the humane management of outdoor cat populations.

To avoid confusion and ensure a seamless experience, LASPCA emphasizes the importance of confirming drop-off times and locations when scheduling appointments, particularly given LASPCA’s multiple campuses. For those in need of transportation assistance, LASPCA offers a solution. Pet owners can arrange for pick-up and drop-off . with Plaquemines Animal Control by contacting plaqueminescampus@laspca.org for extra assistance regarding transportation on a case by case basis

Special cases, such as those requiring additional subsidies or unique care, are handled with care by LASPCA’s Clinic Manager, Resource Center Manager, and Plaquemines Parish Campus management. This ensures that every pet receives the care they need, regardless of financial constraints.

This proactive approach prioritizes funding for areas like Port Sulphur, Buras, Empire, Boothville, and Venice during the Annual Buras Vaccine Drive, recognizing and addressing the specific needs of these communities. Through these initiatives, LASPCA aims to promote responsible pet ownership and ensure that pets in Plaquemines Parish receive the care they deserve, strengthening the bond between pets and their human companions.
