The Athletic, now the nation’s most prolific sports writing organization, has come out with the first pre-draft pro football lineup for the 2025 season. For the first time since 2013, an offensive lineman is the probable number one selection. Will Campbell has been everything he was touted to be coming out of his northern Louisiana high school and by this time next year, he will be the presumed blindside protector for a struggling NFL team. His fellow offensive tackle teammate, Emory Jones, is projected as the 19th selection while undersized and under coached Harold Perkins Jr. looks to be the first linebacker to come off the board at #15. These three are all LSU Tigers and have done what they were recruited to do. Perkins has had the hardest road, suffering poorly developed and executed defensive scheming by former Defensive Coordinator Matt House. But the talent and fire is there.

Michigan has three top 25 selections, including the first two defensive players in Mason Graham and Will Johnson at #2 and #3 while Georgia has three picks, 10 through 12, including the first quarterback in a sketchy year for college signal callers. However, Ohio State comes in with four players, #20 and #22 through 24, two on offense and two on defense.

What’s missing? No Crimson Tide in the top 25, something that never happened since the first year of Nick Saban’s tenure in Tuscaloosa - 2007. Only Texas, Colorado and Arizona have two players projected in the first 25 in ’25. Five SEC schools have one player named. In total, LSU, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Missouri have 13 of the 25 selections. But no top 25 for ‘Bama. Nothing for Auburn, Ole Miss or Mississippi State. SUMMERTIME SALVIAS

It seems as though summer is already here. Our first week of 90° temperatures and its just May. With all of the different species of flowers available for use in Louisiana, some start to struggle when daytime temperatures start averaging above 85° F.

It seems like someone flipped the switch from enjoyable to hot all of the sudden. The Gulf South region has experienced relatively cool springs over the last few years. However, it seems to have kicked that trend during the first week of May. We experienced a couple of days with high temperatures into the low 90s with the “feels-like” temperatures getting close to 100°F. As we get closer and closer to summer, gardeners will be looking to plant flowers that can withstand the brutal onslaught of long, hot summer days and salvia plants fit this description.

The genus Salvia is interesting to study. They are members of Lamiaceae, the mint family, which gives them opposite leaf arrangement and square stems. Botanists have identified three different areas of origination: the Americas, the Mediterranean, and Eastern Asia. Early on, they were primarily used as ingredients in herbal remedies. It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century where salvias became popular among those who garden for pleasure. Currently, Salvias are gaining popularity in niche gardening designs like butterfly, hummingbird, and pollinator gardening because of the abundance of nectar produced in flowers. If there were one plant that would represent all pollinator plants, Salvias would do it proudly.

Because of their popularity, you will find many species of Salvia available at nurseries and garden centers. Salvia spendens offers some old and new choices. Most are familiar the cultivar ‘Red Hot Sally’, a small compact plant that reaches a height around 12 inches and produces a wonderful show of bright red flowers on spikes. Another series of S. spendens is gaining some attention. The cultivars ‘Lighthouse Red’ and ‘Lighthouse Purple’ are similar in appearance to ‘Red Hot Sally’ but they get about twice the size and offer a second color option. The ‘Lyrical’ series of S. nemorosa is also interesting to note. ‘Lyrical Silvertone’ is special in that it is two toned in color with deep purple and silver flower spikes. It reaches a medium size of 24 inches tall. Salvias can also be used for height in the back of a bed or as centerpieces in the middle of large island beds. S. microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ is a larger growing species. It reaches a height around 36 inches tall and produces gorgeous red and white flowers. S. greggii ‘Flame’ is another larger growing species that reaches a similar height but produces bright red flowers.

Many of the salvias mentioned in the last paragraph will re-seed themselves at the end of the season and return the following year as newly sprouted plants. This is usually a positive characteristic of plants but sometimes re-seeding plants can move around on their own in the garden. The mealy cup sage, S. farinacea, is a root-hardy salvia that will return each year from the previous root system. There are two cultivars planted at the LSU AgCenter’s Hammond Research Station, ‘Henry Duelberg’, a purple selection and ‘Augusta Duelberg’, a white selection.

The salvias listed in this article are only but a few that are sold at local nurseries and garden centers. You’ll have to get out and see what is available near you. Happy Gardening!

Are you finally whining down from the festivals and proms and now focusing on graduations? I was really bogged down this past weekend with proms and Mother’s Day bouquets. My granddaughter topped the list as she had two Senior Proms to attend, her Senior Prom was on Friday and her boyfriend’s was on Saturday night. And let’s not forget Sunday was Mother’s Day. I had flower bouquets all over the place! I love the smell of fresh flowers!

I decided to share one of the prom bouquets with you. For the past couple of years the girls have basically ditched the wristlet corsage in favor of hand held bouquets. I must admit they are a lot less tedious to make.The challenge with that is the choice of flowers the young ladies are choosing. I will not turn down a challenge and actually like them!

The bouquet I am sharing with you today was relatively simple. You can’t go wrong with roses. (In this bouquet I used 12 roses.) But you can always enhance them with mini calla lilies (I used 5 of the mini callas). To add more interest and accent the bouquet I added tree fern, and limonium. To add the finishing touches I wrapped the stems with white ribbon and added rhinestone pins into the ribbon. The flowers looked great next to the gold dress the young lady was wearing. I will share some others with you later. Until then.....

What will your next project be? Mine.......I don’t know but I know it will be fun!

PONDWEEDS

Whether it be in the lawn, garden, or pond, weeds can be a consistent problem. Today I am going to talk about a varied group of plants called pondweeds, which (as you might guess) can be found in a pond.

Pondweeds are a group of rooted plants with alter-native leaves. The leaves can be totally submerged or float on the surface of the water. The flowers and fruits are normally green to brown, small, and close together in oblong or ball-like spikes. Submersed leaves are thinner compared to floating leaves, are somewhat translucent, and positioned alternately along the stem. Floating leaves are more oval shaped than submersed leaves, leathery, and sometimes positioned somewhat opposite of one an-other. When visible, the leaf veins are parallel and run the length of the leaf.

These plants can be part of a healthy ecosystem. For example, they can be consumed by animals such as ducks and beavers and provide a habitat for fish. Under most conditions they do not cause problems, but some species can be problematic (e.g., curly-leaf pondweed; P. crispus). When control is necessary, there are several options for eliminating pondweeds. One option is to stock 5 to 10 triploid grass carp per acre for moderate infestations and 15 or more for severe infestations. Do keep in mind that abundant grass carp can impact other fish and live up to 20 years. One chemical option is to apply Endothall (4.23-pound formulation). Endothall (1.92 gallons per acre-foot of water) should be applied as a submersed injection (application using a wand or hose). Make sure to determine pond volume prior to application. Read and follow all chemical label instructions, especially the section on the use of personal protection equipment. Treat ponds when the plants are actively growing and the water temperature is at least 60˚F. For larger bodies of water, it is best to treat one-third of the pond at a time. Wait 2 weeks or more between applications. A repeat whole-pond application may be necessary after the entire pond has been treated to eliminate remaining weeds.

SUCCULENT CONTAINER FOR MOM

If you were struggling to find a present for your mom, consider a mixed succulent container planting. There are hundreds of types of succulent plants that make beautiful combination container plantings. Most local garden centers and nurseries I see typically have many selections of succulents from which to choose.

Succulents are plants with soft and juicy leaves and stems that come in a wide array of colors, textures and sizes. Their leaves help them to retain water and survive in hot, dry climates. Additionally, because of their leaves, succulents are known for their air-purifying properties and can help to improve air quality in a room.

Aloe vera, sedum, kalanchoe, hens-and-chicks and jade plant are all considered succulents.

A succulent plant or container combination makes a great gift for those moms who love plants but do not necessarily have a green thumb.

Since succulents are about 90% water, they can miss a few waterings with no ill effects. They do not tolerate a soil that is too wet, so planting in well-drained soil is important. Unlike most container-grown plants, succulents love drought-like conditions. Make sure they dry out before watering them again.

Indoors, it may take up to a month before you need to water your succulents again.

Put succulents in a location that gets about six hours of full sun a day. Indoors, they look great by a window or in a bright room. Outdoors, they will brighten up a deck, porch or patio.

Pruning succulents is generally not required, and very little fertilizing is needed because they are slow growers. Succulents naturally enter dormancy in the cold, dark winter months, and they need only enough water to keep from shriveling during this time.

I like to create my own container planting by purchasing individual succulents and adding them to a container of my choice. I have also purchased some premade combinations in unique containers.

If you decide to create your own container planting, make sure the container has holes for good drainage.

When arranging your succulents in a container, don’t be afraid to be bold and adventuresome by varying leaf textures and colors. Choose a large one as your center plant and add some that cascade. You can add a tall succulent and then complete your container with filler plants.

I have been told succulents are representations of enduring love, so they are a great choice as a gift for Mother’s Day. Your mom can enjoy her succulents for many years to come.

As we start to emerge from the cooler, wetter winter months and start to see the warmer temperatures and longer days typical with Spring, it is a great time to start going through our lawn and garden irrigation systems to inspect for broken or cracked fittings and connections. As we begin to stir outside more and more, it’s better to go ahead and get these systems dialed in prior to putting them to use in the heat of the summer and droughty periods and realizing they aren’t working properly.

Hopefully, the system you use had been drained, properly winterized, and all exposed pipes properly protected prior to the extremely low temperatures we experienced over the Christmas/ New Year’s timeframe. Any pipes that weren’t properly protected or prepared for those cold temperatures could easily have damaged areas that will show up when the system is repressurized. This includes all types of irrigation systems, not only in-ground automated systems but also includes above ground sys-tems, like drip irrigation lines as well as conventional rubber hoses and any nozzles that assist with the watering chores.

Give your entire system a complete look over and going through to ensure proper function and no broken lines or pipes. It is much easier to fix or replace broken lines now in the cooler temperatures and softer ground now to head off any major issue than waiting until the system is needed more urgently to discover an issue. Run and observe each zone to ensure adequate coverage and prop-er function.
