Tony’s Take

THE DUKE AND I

The picture was always a little out of focus, the subjects staring into an early summer afternoon sun. The young girl on the right would be a teenager in just a few months. She had Elizabeth Taylor features and would strike out on her own before her 20th birthday to secure a Hollywood dream. She had the looks and the determination; the talent was borderline but she managed to get bit parts with what was America’s Family back in the ’50’s - the Nelsons. Ozzie was a former bandleader, his wife, Harriet, a club singer and their two boys had Elvis Presley-style lips….especially Ricky, the younger boy, with a insouciance part James Dean, part Boy Scout. Ricky Nelson was two years older than my sister, herself a War Baby in 1942. The Nelsons had a popular black and white television series back then, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. It was a boring show, light comedy, but what brought in the ratings was Ricky. Nelson’s father, Ozzie, created the first musical video when he shot a very simple type of travelog for Ricky’s, “I’m A Travelin’ Man” in 1961. Five years younger than Elvis, Ricky’s rock and roll career had more hits during Presley’s army days when the King of Rock and Roll could not make the type of live or television appearances that Ricky could. My sister probably attempted to foist her limited vocal chops on the family and what could have been a gateway to a promising but unspectacular L.A. career took several turns, including a part in an Elvis movie and a semi-serious relationship with a relatively well-known actor in the early ’60’s…John Davidson. She finally fell for a Brit and moved to England, Limey accent and all. The younger boy on the right, squinting and tall, was me. A year before becoming a Boy Scout and a month or two before my first daily job as an afternoon newspaper carrier, life was just one silly adventure after another. I knew very little about things at ten years old and sports as defined in my life today was not even on the horizon. I had heard of Babe Ruth and some others but even San Francisco local hero Joe Dimaggio was someone I didn’t know existed. But it was a sunny weekend Saturday and my mother had received a phone call from her older brother about two weeks prior. My Uncle Murphy was a short, bald, dedicated family man but a Hollywood badass, who used his street smarts and personality to create connections among the connected, first in San Francisco but quickly expanding to Los Angeles, where more than half of my mother’s family relocated in the ’30’s and ’40’s. Murph, as he was known among his peers and workers, wouldn’t take any guff from anyone and he protected his family against the sometimes cruel and frigid world of Hollywood once he moved to Culver City, a middle-class neighborhood of palms and lawns, parks and restaurants. Murph had called his favorite sister, my mother, because he was going to be working on a film project in Marin County, about ten to 15 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was Murph’s 16th year in the movie industry and he had worked his way up by being at the right place at the right time and by being a source of information and guidance. For Al Murphy was a Top Kick, a 2nd Director whose job it was to make sure every person on a movie set is where they needed to be no later than when they needed to be there. In an industry of prima donnas and power players, a good Top Kick was worth his weight in gold because when the Director was ready to roll and the elements would not wait for any man…or woman….the 2nd Director put on his chevrons, his Big Boy pants and his Buttkicker Boots and commenced to get everyone in place. Time was money. Murph told my mother to get us kids our Social Security cards because we would be on the payroll for a day or two. We didn’t need to have a union card because we were day labor, local, and would not have a consistent chance of repeating this opportunity. The movie was about a middle-age sternwheeler captain who was attempting to transport mainland Chinese citizens to what would become Formosa after the war but now is known as Taiwan. To shoot the fleeing of the Straits of Formosa village on the west or Chinese mainland side to the island of Formosa, a long pier and landing near San Rafael, California, was used. That was our destination when we left San Francisco early that morning. The person in the middle of the picture? Oh, hundreds of my friends and colleagues have seen the photo and those of a certain age think he might have been my father or weren’t sure. But people like actor Ted Danzig, who saw it 15 years ago, knew exactly who the tall, quiet, leathery man in a sea captain’s uniform was. He usually wore outfits more like a cowboy….or a military man….or an athlete….all of which he was. But every now and then, the Duke, Marion Morrison, would switch roles and, like he told my Uncle Murph back in 1939, when they first met and hit it off immediately, the 5’6 Al and the 6’4” John Wayne, variety was the spice of life. For 40 years, Murph and The Duke helped each other make a living and navigate through life. Murph knew the territory; Wayne had the style. Wayne was born in 1907 in Iowa, Murph in 1905, just a year before the infamous San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. The savvy city boy and the combative country cowboy. It was my second meeting of John Wayne. The first was a cameo when Wayne came by my uncle’s place to meet with him and my uncle took my sister and I outside in front of his house and introduced us to The Quiet Man. It was a brief intro as the black Cadillac sped off and Uncle returned to his house and family. I had one more meeting with The Duke - in 1969 - but that story will have to be told at another time. I still have that picture…and the negative as well. A copy of the original has been misplaced but it continues to show strong. As Danzig told me back in 2009, a certain amount of envy in his voice, “ Yes, I won all those Emmys and had a great show and even better spinoff actors like Woody Harrelson, but I never even got to meet him (The Duke) AND YOU GOT TO WORK WITH HIM! -0-

Words to GREAUX by 2024 LOUISIANA SUPER PLANT ‘JANE’ MAGNOLIA

Most folks know about the iconic southern magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora, and those elegant white flowers that come with it. Their evergreen foliage and abundance in nature are others reason why southern magnolias are so popular with gardeners. When you start looking into different species of magnolia and other related plants, you’ll find some very showy and interesting characters. There are a few species of deciduous magnolias that lose all their leaves in winter and produce a much more striking display Will Afton of flowers in the spring. The ‘Jane’ magnolia is a product of breeding these different species together and is being recognized as a Louisiana Super Plant for 2024.

This isn’t a new plant to Southern gardeners. In fact, it’s a very popular plant used in many different specimen and focal point plantings. The reason is because of the striking display of flowers in late winter. The whole tree explodes in 4-inch wide, reddish-purple blooms prior to leaf emergence in the spring. The blooms are numerous and completely cover the canopy. You may have heard people refer to these deciduous magnolias as Japanese magnolias and the reason is because these species are native to Japan. ‘Jane’ is a part of ‘The Girls’ series of hybrid magnolias that were developed in the 1950’s at the National Arboretum in Washington D.C. by Francis de Vos and later continued by William Kosar. These two horticulturists crossed M. liliflora with M. stellata to create the 8 cultivars, ‘Ann’, ‘Betty’, ‘Jane’, ‘Judy’, ‘Randy’, ‘Ricki’, and ‘Susan’. Each cultivar in ‘The Girls’ series are considered multi-stemmed shrubs, and each grows to its own size. The flowers have linear shaped petals that range in color from purple to pale pink, white interiors, and have a fragrance. According to Jason Stagg of the LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station, ‘Jane’ produces one of the larger more prominent flowers in the entire series. The reason is because they fully open to almost 4 inches wide. Not all cultivars in the series have flowers that fully open and stand out like ‘Jane’. The blooming period is during spring, however most specimens in the deep south will bloom in late winter. It’s a blessing and a curse at the same time. Late winter blooms really stand out in a dormant background, but the timing opens them up to late freezes come spring. Once the blooming period finishes up, leaves start to emerge, adding another period of aesthetic interest. Deciduous magnolias like all other plants do have a few common pests that show up from time to time. The main insect pest seen on deciduous magnolias are scale types, especially Florida Wax Scale, Ceroplastes floridensis. They feed on many common landscape plants but more often than not, clients find them sucking out plant juices on their Japanese magnolias. As they feed the sugars in within “plant juices” are filtered out and allowed to fall on stems and leaves below. That sugary solution is known as honeydew and will be a substrate for black sooty mold, a common indicator of scale problems. Florida Wax Scale adults are very small, 2 to 4 mm in length and 1 to 3.5 mm in width. They appear even larger due to a thick layer of pinkish-white wax. Control is simple with insecticidal soap, horticultural oils, and neem oil. Read the label for proper mixing and application instructions. Follow the recommendations on follow-up procedures for best results. Trees with annual scale issues can benefit from an application of imidacloprid at the start of the growing season. You will find that active ingredient on insecticide products labeled as systemic. Always refer back to the label when using pesticide products as each active ingredient will have different guidelines to follow. Like previously stated ‘Jane’ magnolias aren’t new. They’ve have been popular plants at the garden center for decades since they were introduced to the world. If you are new to the area or new to gardening and want a medium sized tree with a breathtaking display of flowers, then give ‘Jane’ magnolias a try!

Read us online at: www.printmediaplus.com Well, so it begins again! The argument of Caitlin Clark vs Pistol Pete Maravich and who is the best collegiate scorer ever. I can honestly sit here and tell you that unequivocally there is no argument! Not only is there no argument but there should never have been an inclination that these two players are even on the same level.

By Paula Johnson

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hope you all had a fun filled Mardi Gras! I decided to pass on the festivities this year, since I am still trying to get my Achilles Tendon back into shape. This has been an ongoing process since October. My Physical Therapist keeps telling me it’s going to be a long process. So I am finding out. Oh well, life goes on.

Sure, Clark is a good female player but that is about it. The Iowa star passed former Washington star Kelsey Plum to become the NCAA Division I women’s basketball all-time scoring leader with her 3,528th career point, which ballooned to 3,569 by the end of the 106-89 victory against

Okay, so who is ready for Easter? I found the cutest bunny pattern and decided to share it with yall. This is actually painted on a 6 inch bottle cap. And believe it or not I found it at Dollar Tree! Of course, since it is metal, you will have to prep the metal so the paint will adhere to the surface. I sprayed it with Deco Art Satin Finish Spray Varnish. The paint went on really smooth with no issues at all. As long as you use a light touch when painting. Shading and highlighting was a breeze. This one isn’t quite finished yet. Still have to paint the wooden beads that I will put on the jute hanger, paint the inside rim of the cap, and give it three good coats of varnish. Well, this is my project for this edition. So what will your next project be? Miine.....I am thinking carrots or maybe Easter Lilies perhaps a cross with flowers. Not really sure. But, I know it will be lots of fun! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Playing in a fast-paced system, Clark has been encouraged to shoot whenever, and from wherever, she feels comfortable. In each of the last three seasons, she has taken more than 30 percent of Iowa’s total shot attempts. By comparison, fellow top-five career scorers Kelsey Mitchell and Brittney Griner both took around 26 percent of their team’s shots during their senior seasons. Last year’s second-leading Big Ten scorer (behind Clark), Mackenzie Holmes, took only 21.6 percent of Indiana’s total field goal attempts. Clark’s success from deep has been integral to her success. Of the four other players in NCAA top-five scoring, only Mitchell (2014-18) totaled more points from 3. The 6-foot Iowa guard has recorded nearly 40 percent of her points from 2 and just over 40 percent from behind the arc. That means she has scored 1,428 pts from behind the 3-point line. Now, you might be asking why am I bringing up this stat…well that is because do you know how many of Maravich’s 3,667 points were scored behind the 3-point line? 0% of his points were scored behind the arc because it did not exist when he played. If you use the same percentage on Maravich that Clark has taken on 3 pointers than Maravich would have scored 5,134 points in his career and we would not be having this conversation. He also accumulated his record-setting point total in just three seasons of college basketball. That’s not the only key timeline difference that could have made a difference in scoring. The shot clock was also not instituted in college basketball until the 1985-86 season. Since its introduction, scoring has increased, as the ticking clock prevents teams from stalling for extended periods. Born June 22, 1947 in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, Pete Maravich began playing varsity basketball at Louisiana State University in the 1967-68 season. At that time, freshmen were not allowed to suit up with the varsity team, so he had to wait until his sophomore season to play for his father, Press. Sophomore (1967-68): 43.8 points per game Junior (1968-69): 44.2 points per game Senior (1969-70): 44.5 points per game Maravich’s three seasons are the three highest scoring averages in NCAA history. (Furman’s Frank Selvy ranks fourth at 41.7 in 1953-54.)

BEST PRALINES IN THE With four games remaining in Iowa’s regular season, along with the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA WORLD! Call 281-570- Tournament, it would appear extremely likely, if not completely certain, that Clark will pass Maravich during a season in which she is averaging a Division I-best 32.8 points per game. 3300. ROOFING FRAMING DRYWALL Flooring, Electrical, Plumbing. 25 years experienced crew. Call 228-332-7024 DIRT DELIVERED & spread. Fill dirt, limestone, sand, crushed concrete. Call 228-861-0818.

Jaeson Maravich told NOLA.com in early February that, while he respects and admires Clark, he believes her record and his late father’s record should be considered separate entities. “I look at my dad’s record, and if somebody breaks it, it’s almost like two totally different records just because of the circumstances and the rules and everything else,” he said. “I think they had said if he had played four years, he would have had close to 5,000. So, I said this last year: It’s kind of like an apple-toorange comparison. And then if you’re talking about the women’s record, I mean, to me, that’d be two totally separate records.” I agree with Jaeson and the national sports media should be embarrassed that they are even saying these two names in the same sentence! Again, Clark is a good player but the advantages she has today over what Maravich dealt with when he played is too advantageous. There will only be one All-Time Scoring Leader and that is PISTOL PETE MARAVICH!

PRUNE, PRUNE, PRUNE

We are inching closer and closer to that warmer weather. I begin itching to get outside and do some gardening and clean up old or dead foliage. The best place to start this process is getting that pruning equip-ment sharp and clean. Late February is the time to prune broadleaf and narrowleaf evergreens or deciduous plants. Make sure to know your plant type before pruning. Make sure to prune after flowering. If the plants have colorful berries, make sure to prune them after the berries are gone. Some pruning methods you can use are tip-pruning, thinning, shearing, and rejuvenation. Tip-pruning will help encourage thick new growth which should result in a bushy plant. With tip-pruning you will only remove the first few inches of stem tips. Thinning is used on broadleaf, deciduous landscape to help encourage flowering and strong growth. This should be done before the new growth occurs and should be done by removing older or weaker branches all the way back to the lateral branch or completely to the ground. Shearing will have you clipping the newest foliage which is usually 1 to 2 inches of new growth. This helps with shaping and regulating the size of shrubs. This will help promote thick, dense foliage. Finally, rejuvenation is severe pruning which most people are cautious of doing. This only needs to be done on broadleaf evergreens and deciduous plants that have become overgrown, leggy, and straggly plants. For more information and details on how to prune and proper equipment to use please go to MSU Extension webpage for publication #IS0204 “Pruning Landscape Plants” or contact your local Extension Office.

ORGANIC VS. INORGANIC GARDENING Let’s face it, interest in organic gardening is increasing with much of the interest directed towards re-ducing or eliminating the use of conventional pesticides for controlling insects and diseases and/or eliminating the use of synthetic fertilizers. There are now many products in grocery stores labeled organic and people buy them, regardless of their increased price tag. Many claim that eating organically grown foods is much healthi-er than eating foods produced using conventional methods although there have been scientific studies contra-dict such claims. To the contrary, there have been studies showing no difference in healthiness, taste, and en-vironmental sustainability between the two methods. To be honest, it doesn’t matter which method you prefer, it’s your choice as an individual, both methods can work, and both methods can be sustainable. But there are trade-offs when it comes to organic gardening. Organic gardening in south Mississippi faces some serious problems with severe insect and disease pressures on vegetable plants. There are many effective conventional insecticides and fungicides but control-ling diseases and insects by natural means alone is difficult. There are several insecticides available including Bt and spinosad formulations for caterpillar or larval control or pyrethrums for other insects, but disease con-trol is difficult. Neem oil, bicarbonate, and copper- and sulfur-based fungicides provide some protection against diseases, but the best results for disease management come from selecting resistant varieties and prop-er timing and spacing during planting. For these reasons, organic gardening is easier on a small scale. Hand-picking insects, protecting natural predators such as ladybugs and assassin bugs and incorporating insect re-sistant plants such as chrysanthemums could help with insect control. Removing dead or diseased plant tissue, using healthy transplants, and watering in the morning will aid in disease management for both methods of gardening. Organic fertilizers such as manures, compost, or bone meal are derived directly from plant or animal sources and usually contain plant nutrients in low concentrations. Many of these nutrients must be converted into inorganic forms by soil bacteria and fungi before plants can use them, so they typically are more slowly released, especially during cold weather. They improve water movement into the soil and, in time, add structure to the soil. Organics feed beneficial mi-crobes, making the soil easier to work. But they may cost more than inorganic fertilizers and are more difficult to apply because they are less concentrated, supplying fewer nutrients pound for pound. Fresh, non-composted manure can damage your plants as well because some manure contains harmful amounts of salts and may be a source of weed seeds. If manure from grazing land is used, herbicide residue may harm garden plants. Conventional fertilizers are cheaper per pound and usually contain only a few nutri-ents – generally nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur and sometimes micronutri-ents, either singly or in combination. These nutrients are in a form readily available to plants and are available in slow-release form. Our soils in Mississippi rarely lack micronutrients so it’s often unnecessary to apply them. Too often the word sustainable is used synonymously with organic gardening while both meth-ods have the potential to be sustainable. Sustainable can be described as the use of a resource in such continued on, pp. 8, MS County Gardeners

continued from, pp. 6, MS County Gardeners ORGANIC VS. INORGANIC GARDENING (CONTINUED) a way that it does not harm the environment, is economically viable, and is socially responsible. Both methods can incorporate wise water-use practices, add organic matter to improve soil health, etc. But, one must also keep in mind, whether you do organic or conventional gardening, it doesn’t mean pesticide free. All the previously-mentioned products are, indeed, chemicals used to control pests and are as safe as the user’s ability to apply them correctly. It’s the way they are used that can make a difference on the environment. Reading and follow-ing label directions, applying no more than recommended, and applying products targeted at specific insect or disease pests are three important components in successful gardening and protecting the environment for gen-erations to come.

FOSTERING WITH THE LASPCA Are you an avid animal lover and looking for a rewarding way to give back to the homeless animals in your community? Then we at the Louisiana SPCA are looking for you to join our Foster Program as a foster parent for our animals in need of a loving temporary home. Fostering is one of the key pillars of our shelter that aids in healing the homeless animals we care for daily. Becoming a foster to one of our animals allows that animal to grow outside of the shelter. As much as we care for the animals at our shelter, it can still be a stressful environment for them to stay in for long periods of time. Even short periods of time like over a holiday, for a day, or just a weekend can help offer enrichment for the animal. Nothing compares to the feeling of a home for an animal that has been without one. Animals learn to thrive with human interaction, especially if they are considered timid and nervous at the shelter. Forming a bond with their foster parent can assist in letting their guard down so that we can see their true personality shine! Once we get a better understanding of who they truly are, we can match them with the best adopter. Understanding if they prefer their independence, enjoy playing with other dogs, don’t mind young children, or are comfortable sharing their home with cats are all important factors that can help them be adopted. We rely on fosters to note those behaviors and to take all the cute pictures they can so that we can show potential adopters their best side! We have a variety of fostering opportunities available that you can sign up for. Kitten Krewe, bottle babies, medical, and behavioral fostering are all options to choose from. Kitten Krewe is for our kittens that are too small for the adoption floor but can eat food on their own. Bottle babies refer to kittens or puppies who need a foster to feed them from a bottle until they are big enough to eat on their own. Medical fosters are for those animals who have medical conditions that need to be healed or tended to before they can become adopted. In some cases they may become adoptable but still need medical care and will heal best in a foster home. Behavior fosters work with animals that need help learning to socialize with humans and will benefit from being in a quiet home for their personality to come out. If you have never fostered before, there is no need to worry because you will be matched with a seasoned foster mentor. Anytime you have a question or simply need support, your foster mentor will be able to guide you in the right direction. Our foster veterinary technician will also be in contact with you to make sure your animal is getting their proper medications and is on the correct diet. You will also be in contact with our amazing foster coordinators that will help match you with the right animal to foster. There is a whole time behind you to make sure that you and your foster animal succeed. No matter what kind of fostering you sign up for, you would be making an impact on the homeless animals of your community. To learn more about our foster care program or to sign up to become a foster, visit our website at www.louisianaspca.org/foster. -0-
