Tony’s Take

READILY APPARENT

A few years ago, I ran into Anthony McFarland in the press box at Tiger Stadium. He had just moved into a national sports media position and the very likable “Booger” and I had a discussion about what LSU had that made people like him succeed in a field where a generation ago, few former athletes had the talent or the discipline to do well in sports media.

Before ESPN, few athletes became broadcasters because sports broadcasting was just that - a series of comments regarding the meat and potatoes of the game at hand and little about the nuances of the sport, not to mention the human side of athletes. Broadcasters were voices first; many had scant knowledge of the game and even more had not even been a member of a team.

It took former athletes like Pat Summerall and John Madden to bring sports media out of the dark ages. Guys like Dizzy Dean and Phil Rizzuto were former players but either were clowns or rah-rah guys on the air. Even Don Meredith and Frank Gifford were not trailblazers; they rode the coattails of Howard Cosell, a former lawyer who brought color but no experience into what has become a Mecca of the NFL - Monday Night Football.

Let’s not forget Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit, former jocks who rode the new wave of sports in the 1990’s to stardom and beyond, along with Chris Collingsworth and Troy Aikman and finally the Louisianan who combined the persona of Dizzy Dean with that of John Madden….Terry Bradshaw.

But that’s a sidebar. LSU has an unequalled number of former athletes in media. Start with the most successful pitchman of all time - Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq combines an overwhelmingly powerful persona with humor and knowledge, effervescing into millions of homes over the past 30 years as a pitchman and an analyst for TNT’s Inside the NBA. Another former Tiger - Glenn “Big Baby” Davis - is a YouTube co-host for basketball. Continue with the aforementioned McFarland, a former All American nose tackle for the Tigers 25 years ago. Add Marcus Spears and Ryan Clark, long-time ESPN analysts for Monday Night Countdown. Jacob Hester the original #18 for the Tigers on ESPN. Former All American Todd Walker, a voice for the College World Series among other duties. Another media voice - Sandra Smith a former track performer - is a reporter for FOX Business News and a panelist on the show, Outnumbered.

The latest to join national media was Andrew Whitworth, an analyst on Amazon’s Thursday Night Football among his other jobs. The former All American and NFL star and 2021 NFL Man of the Year winner has made an immediate impact in media. Brandon Taylor and Marlon Favorite are regulars in the Tiger press box and host local radio sports shows in Baton Rouge. T-Bob Hebert, son of Bobby, is a local ESPN fixture in Baton Rouge and of course Bobby is the unbridled radio analyst for the New Orleans Saints.

This story all began with John Ed Bradley, a former center for the Tigers during the 90’s who began his career with stops at The Washington Post, Esquire, GQ and Sports Illustrated. His SI’s stories were my favorite as they always involved LSU and when Shaq became a fixture, the rest of this story started to develop.

Today, social media and influencers are part of the new media landscape for former Tigers. Olivia Dunne, the former gymnast, is a model and influencer and showcased in the Prime Video docusseries, The Money Game. It also helps to be the girlfriend of super Major League pitcher Paul Skenes, who is likely to pass Ben McDonald as the greatest pitcher to ever play for the Tigers. Cody Worsham has been a podcaster and sports writer following her non-athletic career at LSU.

Other athletes like Angel Reese and Flau’jee Johnson have a large following in media. Perhaps the most surprising is the number of mothers of former LSU athletes who have become certified NFL agents to represent their sons and other athletes. That include Regina Jackson, mother of Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders, Heather Van Norman, mother of Odell Beckham Junior and Kimberly Williams, who Josh Williams, a former LSU running back, calls Mom. All three were featured in the latest Sports Illustrated issue about Power Players in sports. Believe me, LSU is well represented in that area. Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia may have more NFL players on active rosters but all three of those powerhouses cannot begin to compete with LSU in the field of media. In fact, outside of former Ohio State player Kirk Herbstreit, I can’t think of one former athlete from those schools who moved on to the type of prominent positions occupied by former Tigers.

Words to GREAUX by

OVERSEED WITH RYEGRASS NOW TO IMPROVE FORAGE QUALITY.

Growing up in rural Southeast Louisiana, many folks are accustomed to seeing bright green pastures during the fall and late winter months. Bahiagrass and bermudagrass, two common warm-season pasture grasses, slow their growth rate as temperatures and light quality decrease going into the end of the year. To maintain good quality forage material for their animals, producers will overseed their warm-season grass pastures will a cool-season plant that will grow and thrive during the cooler months. In most cases, they are overseeding with ryegrass, a common cool-season forage option.

Ryegrass may be the most common cool-season forage planted but there are other options like fescue, oats, wheat, and several clovers. All these plants thrive from November through May in Louisiana. However, now is the time to start overseeding pastures If you want a cool-season forage this winter.

To prepare a warm-season pasture for overseeding, graze it down to a stubble height of about 1 inch. This will help to remove excess foliage and increase soil to seed contact. A mower can also help with this step. Bahiagrass and bermudagrass can tolerate light discing as there are no long term effects on the stand. Sometimes old stands can be rejuvenated by light discing in the fall prior to overseeding. The general rate for overseeding ryegrass is 20-30 lbs. per acre. For those with smaller pastures you might find it easier to work with 0.5-0.75 lbs. per 1000ft2. Homeowners looking to overseed their lawns apply at a higher rate (5-10 lbs per 1000ft2) for aesthetic purposes.

Ryegrass comes in two basic options: annual ryegrass and perennial ryegrass. The annual and perennial names don’t accurately describe the lifecycle of ryegrass grown in the south, it’s just how when differentiate between the two. Annual ryegrass grows taller and has a lighter green color than perennial ryegrass, which grows shorter and displays a darker green color. Annual ryegrass is the more common choice when overseeding large pastures, but those with smaller pastures may enjoy the look of perennial ryegrass.

Once ryegrass has been seeded, it will need rain to start the germination process. If possible, review extended weather forecast to learn of the next possible rain event so that you can apply seed before it happens. There is usually enough nitrogen in the soil for ryegrass to come up and grow through December. However, to improve quality a nitrogen fertilizer can be applied in January at 50-60 lbs. per acre or 1.1-1.3 lbs. per 1000ft2. If you were to use 33-0-0 as the nitrogen source, then it would be 150-180 lbs. 33-0-0 per acre or 3.3-3.9 lbs. 33-0-0 per 1000ft2.

Graze or mow as needed during the season, especially in late winter in spring as the warm-season grass comes out of dormancy. There are negative effects on overseeding warm-season grass with a cool-season grass in the spring because both will compete in spring. However, the benefits usually justify the practice. For more information on overseeding pastures and to see a list of other coolseason options check out the latest Cool-season Pasture & Forage Varieties 2025-20256 at https:// www.lsuagcenter.com/articles/page1660746612361.

Will Afton

Hope you have been enjoying our somewhat cool mornings. Here we are in the middle of October and we are still in the 80’s! That is better than the 90’s and 100’s! I am so looking forward to the chill in the air on Halloween night. I will be sitting outside, even though we don’t have trick or treaters in our neighborhood. I really miss handing out candy to the children all dressed up in their costumes, the smiles on their faces, the thrill of them walking and playing in the middle of the street, the excitement in the night air! I love Halloween!

With all that being said, I have finally finished my coaster set! The Owls are all done, sitting nicely on their tree branch with eyes wide looking into the darkness. They were so much fun to paint. I was a little unsure about the different shades of blue but I think they worked really well. Yes, I know, they are not exactly alike. No two or three or however many are. When painting multiples there will always be a difference.

Well, that’s my project for this time. Hope you like it. So, what will your next project be? Mine...I don’t know. But I know it will be fun!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

and offensive miscues than by big, explosive plays.

First Half & Flow of the Game

Well, things are getting better but far from being perfect. However, they are very fixable! LSU won the game but lost the war! It almost looked like the offense hit a Cock-A-Doodle-Doo moment but then they hit snooze in the redzone and fell back asleep! On a crisp Saturday night in Baton Rouge, the No. 11 LSU Tigers held off the South Carolina Gamecocks in a 20–10 contest that was defined more by stout defense

South Carolina struck first. Deep into the first quarter, the Gamecocks mounted a drive that culminated in a 72-yard touchdown run by running back Matt Fuller, giving SC a 7–3 lead with just 25 seconds left in the quarter. LSU responded methodically, crafting a 57-yard drive over six plays that ended in a 6-yard fade pass to tight end Trey’Dez Green, giving LSU a 10–7 lead with about 12:54 left before halftime.

Late in the second quarter, on 3rd-and-15 from LSU’s 40, South Carolina’s quarterback LaNorris Sellers tossed an interception to LSU’s Tamarcus Cooley, giving the Tigers good field position with around 4:37 left in the half. However, LSU’s momentum was halted soon after when quarterback Garrett Nussmeier threw an interception of his own on a 3rd-and-12 from the USC 48—picked off by DQ Smith around the 25. The half ended with LSU leading 10–7.

Second Half & Key Moments

South Carolina tied it early in the third quarter when their offense worked a 46-yard drive capped by a 47-yard field goal, knotting the game at 10. The Tigers answered back just a few minutes later: Nussmeier found wide receiver Kyle Parker on a slant, and Parker turned it into a 43-yard touchdown, reclaiming a 17–10 edge for LSU. The drive took only four plays and covered 75 yards in roughly two minutes.

LSU threatened again later in the third, bolstered by a 21-yard scramble from Nussmeier and a sweet 56-yard run from Ju’Juan Johnson, which positioned LSU at the SC 9. Yet on 2nd-and-9, Nussmeier’s pass was intercepted by Peyton Williams, halting that promising drive.

As the fourth quarter ticked on, South Carolina tried to muster a comeback. On 4th-and-4 at the LSU 31, Sellers attempted a pass to Vandrevius Jacobs, but LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane knocked it away, turning it over on downs with 5:43 remaining. LSU drove into position for a closing field goal. With 1:47 left, Damian Ramos drilled a 22-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 20–10 and essentially seal the win.

Standout Performances

Trey’Dez Green caught eight passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. At 6’7”, he posed a difficult matchup, and his performance earned him a game ball.

Garrett Nussmeier passed for 254 yards and two touchdowns. But his night was marred by two interceptions and a few missed chances deep in South Carolina territory.

On the ground, LSU racked up a season-high 166 rushing yards, with Caden Durham leading the way (70 yards on 15 carries).

Defensively, Tamarcus Cooley stood out with an interception and a pass breakup. Safety A.J. Haulcy was also active, leading LSU with 11 tackles.

South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers passed for 124 yards, was sacked five times, and threw that one interception. The Gamecocks moved into LSU territory six times over the night, but only one of those drives resulted in points (the field goal). The others ended in punts, a turnover, or a missed field goal.

Takeaways & Implications

LSU improved to 5–1 overall and 2–1 in SEC play. Coach Brian Kelly emphasized that despite offensive mistakes, the defense held South Carolina to 10 points—a crucial foundation for the win. He also lauded how LSU “controlled the flow of the game,” aside from self-inflicted errors.

For the Gamecocks (3–3, 1–3 SEC), this loss stings as another close-but-faltering effort in a rebuild. Though they found ways into Tiger territory repeatedly, they just couldn’t convert drives into scores. South Carolina’s offensive inconsistency and susceptibility under pressure—particularly against a disguised, aggressive LSU defense—remained a limiting factor.

In the end, the margin may have been 10 points, but the storyline was bigger: LSU’s defense held firm, the offense did enough (despite miscues), and the Tigers emerged with a hard-earned SEC victory at home. They hope to build on this as they move forward in conference play. As they say, an ugly win is better than a pretty loss but just how far can this geaux? The Bayou Bengals have 2 huge tests before our next article in travelling to Nashville to take on Vanberbilt in a noon game and then coming back home to host what could be the un-defeated Texas A&M Aggies!

POISON HEMLOCK

Poison hemlock is commonly known as deadly hemlock, poison parsley, poison stinkweed, spotted parsley, carrot fern, or snake-weed. Native to Eurasia and northern Africa, this herbaceous broadleaf was introduced to the United States as an ornamental garden plant. It prefers moist, disturbed soil and often grows near hedgerows, roadsides, ditches, waste ground, woodlands, pastures, and banks of streams or rivers.

It is a cool-season biennial that produces flowering stems the second year. The small, white flowers have five petals and form on the end of rays in umbrella-like clusters, known as an umbel. These umbels are typically composed of 12 to 16 rays and have four to eight bracts at the base. Each flower will produce two seeds, measuring around 1/8 inch long. Poison hemlock reproduces only by seed, with a single plant producing up to 40,000 seeds. Seeds commonly fall near the mother plant, but they can also be dispersed by birds, rodents, water, and soil-laden vehi-cles.

Poison hemlock has a pinnately compound leaf. These lacy leaves (measuring 8 to 16 inches) are triangular, resembling a carrot leaf, and alternate along the plant. Upper leaves are much smaller than lower leaves. Erect, hollow stems are branched and characterized by a peppering of purple spots, some having more purple than others. Mature plants can reach up to 8 feet tall.

Poison hemlock can easily be mistaken for other members of the carrot family (Apiaceae), such as wild carrot (Queen Anne’s Lace), parsley, and turnips. Due to its strong similarities to other plants within the carrot family, mistaken ingestion is the most common cause of human poisoning.

All parts of this weed are highly toxic and pose a risk to humans and livestock. Symptoms following ingestion of poison hemlock include trembling, nervousness, difficulty moving, pupal dilation, slow/weak pulse (later becom-ing rapid), salivation, rapid breathing, frequent urination, nausea, convulsions, and a decrease in body temperature. The most severe cases can result in coma and death due to respiratory failure.

The likelihood of hemlock poisoning can be mitigated by better identification and management practices. For more information and control of Poison hemlock, refer to Publication 3919 at extension.msstate.edu.

SAVING LIVES AND CELEBRATING COMMUNITY:

LOUISIANA SPCA’S 3RD ANNUAL CARNIVAL

The Louisiana SPCA’s Carnival is back, bringing color, music, and wagging tails to New Orleans on Saturday, October 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. at 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd. This isn’t just a day of fun — it’s a celebration with purpose. Every laugh, cheer, and wagging tail helps support the programs that protect animals, strengthen families, and keep pets and people together. Carnival is a chance for families, friends, and animal lovers to enjoy an afternoon of joy while making a real difference for animals who rely on us for safety, care, and second chances.

This year, Carnival will treat locals to a day full of live music from the two-time Grammy Award-winning Lost Bayou Ramblers and the soulful sounds of The Original Pinettes Brass Band, lively entertainment from Emcee DJ Debbie with a D, roaming circus-themed performances, carnival games, and delicious local bites, making it fun for the whole family, animals included. Also, younger Carnival goers can take part in our “Be a Vet for a Day” Experience, sponsored by MetLife Pet Insurance, where they can step into our Community Clinic as a veterinarian with their assigned plushie patient and learn how we provide daily medical care to animals in need. After the hands-on experience, each participant gets to “adopt” their plush patient to take home, inspiring compassion and care from a young age. In addition, Carnival-goers will have the chance to meet and adopt animals from our shelter. Every adoption at Carnival gives an animal the love and safety they deserve while opening space in our shelter to save another life.

We hold Carnival every year to bring our community together and make a real difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them. Funding that helps us provide low-cost vaccination clinics, large-scale spay and neuter initiatives, pet food and supply assistance, and even temporary boarding for those facing housing crises. When the proceeds aren’t directly supporting community programs, they are used to care for the countless animals who come through our doors every day at both our Orleans and Plaquemines campuses. These funds help strengthen our Foster, Adoption, and Humane Law and Rescue programs, ensuring animals receive the medical care, food, love, and protection they need to thrive.

Attending Carnival isn’t just about fun — it’s about creating a real impact. Every adoption, every transport to another city, every life-saving medical procedure, and every moment of support helps animals find loving homes, supports families in caring for their pets, and strengthens our mission to protect animals across the Greater New Orleans region. By joining us and celebrating at Carnival, you become part of a movement that keeps pets safe, families together, and provides second chances to animals who need them the most.

Carnival helps animals like Musketeer, a 6-year-old sweet coonhound. Early on the morning of September 22, our team arrived at the campus to find Musketeer tied to our fence, alone, with no food or water nearby. It’s heartbreaking to imagine how long she had been there, possibly all night, scared, hungry, and completely alone. Thanks to the support from events like Carnival, we were able to bring her inside, care for her, and give her a chance at the safe, loving home she deserves.

Want to make a difference by joining us this year for our biggest paw-ty of the year? Visit our website at www.louisianaspca.org/carnivalhome to grab your tickets to Carnival today!

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Meet Moo. A charming little guy who is being fostered by START. Not long after coming to us, Moo began to show signs of being ill. He was diagnosed with FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) a disease caused by a mutation of the corona virus. For many years this disease was a death sentence for cats, but fortunately a medication has become available to help cats and kittens like Moo. He is completing his first week of treatment with the medication and is already feeling better. Animal rescue organizations like START rely on donations to help pay for veterinary care for their rescues.
