A dozen teens participating in an overnight camp for young people with limb loss tried something new Wednesday, July 11 — driving.

The Board of Police Commissioners promoted Kevin Glenn to deputy police chief, effective July 2, at a special meeting last month.

CorRales Dupree, 21, came from Richmond, Virginia, to participate in Camp No Limits at Quinnipiac University.

Former Deputy Chief Jonathan Mulhern accepted the deputy chief position with the Branford Police Department and was sworn in July 9.

He got behind the wheel of a driving simulator, steering and engaging the gas and brake with his hands, with the road before him on three screens.

Mulhern had served more than 25 years in North Haven.

Dupree has attended the camp the past three years. “Coming to camp helped to get me a scholarship to play adaptive basketball for college,” said Dupree, a junior at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

Now, as an older camper, he works with younger participants.

“I was excited to come here for the driving stuff,” Tucker said.

“Their energy really runs off and inspires me,” he said.

Police Chief Thomas McLoughlin said Monday that Mulhern was the quintessential law enforcement professional and an asset to the department, mentoring a number of young officers and supervisors.
