Amazon fulfillment center set to open later this summer By Bailey Wright The Citizen

Local and state officials got a behind-the-scenes look Thursday, June 20 at Amazon’s new robotic fulfillment center, which is expected to open later this summer. “This is how we continue to modernize and grow our

economy, by welcoming these changes and making sure we can make it happen for Amazon and a lot of others,” Gov. Ned Lamont said. The 855,000-square-foot facility was built on the former site of Pratt & Whitney off Route 5. Once it is fully operational,

the center will be able to ship a million items per day during peak periods. “In this particular building, we’re capable of storing tens of millions of units ... and we want to be able to manage that as effectively as possible See Amazon, A7

The business, located at 560 Universal Drive N., will donate 50 percent of the proceeds from inrestaurant sales between 5 to 8 p.m. that day to Mikaela (Kayla) Carbaugh. Carbaugh, 20, graduated from Lancaster Bible College this May and left soon after on a senior trip to retrace Apostle Paul’s mission trip. While taking photos in Turkey she slipped on rocks, which resulted in a broken back. She was paralyzed from the waist down. Carbaugh worked for Chick-fil-A North Haven last summer and her younger sister, Megan, 19, has been an employee for about two years,

Five-town transfer station contract renewed By Matthew Zabierek Record-Journal staff

Five area municipalities under contract to send waste to Covanta Energy’s transfer station in Wallingford have opted to renew their agreement with Covanta for five years after exploring other options. The municipalities — Meriden, Wallingford, Cheshire, North Haven, and Hamden — decided renewing with Covanta made the most sense financially after hiring a consultant last year to explore other options. Municipal officials said the $70 per ton fee to dispose of trash at the Wallingford plant is among the lowest in the state. They also cited the central location for the five towns involved. “Quite frankly, when you look at the comparison of other transfer stations and their tipping fees, this is by far the least expensive of the transfer stations” in close proximity, Meriden City Manager Tim Coon said. Some transfer stations in the geographical area charge upwards of $80 to $90 per

During a tour of the facility, Dyce explained the 400 different “stations” where employees, assisted by robots, will prepare products to be shipped across the country.

After completing an application, candidates will need to watch a video and complete a drug test, but could leave the hiring event with a job offer, which would be contingent on the results of the drug test and background check.

“... it raises the bar. If this company keeps offering it, and especially in the labor market where we’re at about 3 percent unemployment, that’s going to drive wages up everywhere,” Harrison said. She said the bulk of initial hiring will be for associate positions — individuals sorting items at stations with See Amazon, A9

The North Haven fulfillment center is the second in the state, about 100,000 square feet smaller than the Windsor center. Amazon also has a sorting center in Wallingford, a delivery station in Bristol and an Amazon Air Hub in Hartford. First Selectman Michael Freda, Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz and state lawmakers joined Dyce and Lamont on the tour. Freda thanked the Amazon representatives for opening the center in North Haven and said the town and state will continue to be the facility’s biggest “cheerleader.” The “economic development multiplier effect of the synergies that are created with other businesses doing business with Amazon really have helped ignite the optimism, the hope of our community in this region,” Freda said.

Report says 634K rode Hartford line in 1st year MERIDEN — In its first year of service, an estimated 634,000 passengers rode the Hartford Line from New Haven to Springfield, according to a report released by the state Department of Transportation.

The tally is about 51,000 more than originally projected for the first year. The $764 million Hartford Line is the first rail line to open for service in the state since 1990. New stations were built in Wallingford, Meriden and Berlin and 16 cars were leased from Massachusetts, allowing 17 daily

trips to Hartford, and 12 to Springfield. “We need to dramatically improve our transportation system to compete in a 21st century economy,” Gov. Ned Lamont said in prepared remarks. “The Hartford LIne is one component of creating a fast, efficient transportation system that works. It’s only been one year and ridership has been higher than expected...” The line has spurred $430 million in new development along the rail corridor in recent years, according to the study. Towns fight knotweeds By Joy VanderLek Special to The Citizen

Connecticut is being invaded. Everywhere you look — abandoned backlots, street corners, or alongside a highway or side street — you will see non-native invasive plant life. If you know what to look for.

The Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group defines invasive plants as “non-native plants that are disruptive in a way that causes environmental or economic harm, or harm to human health.” Suzanne Simone, environmental planner for the town of Cheshire said one thing she wanted to impress on people is “to try to prevent further invasions by being aware of what invasives look like, and to monitor their yards.” You might recognize a few of the names: mugwort, Japanese knotweed, barberry, garlic mustard, bittersweet, autumn olive and multi-flora rose. On the CIPWG’s website (cipwg.uconn.ed) help is given to identify invasive plants with plentiful information in the way of photos and factsheets that list plant description, habitat, region, look-alikes, ecological threat and more. As the town’s environmental planner, Simone knows that one important strategy is to educate residents about non-native invasive plants and to encourage people to address invasive issues on their properties. The town is a resource to provide assistance with plant identification and management options.

“The town addresses inva-

Mugwort is another tough invasive. Many advise not to till it under, said Shari Guarino. “You are turning up monsters under soil. Don’t let it go to seed. Cut off the tops. Rail From A10

“Kukos to ConnDot and Amtrak for this first level of success,” Moore said. “We always billed this rail as a catalyst for development, which is kind of a risk.”

But the number of residential units built along the line proved the risk was worth it, he said.
