Approval for the Ulbrich Boys and Girls Club to open a branch in Hope Christian Church in North Haven was delayed after a public hearing before the Planning and Zoning Commission last week. Tammi Ulbrich, chair of the Ulbrich Boys and Girls Club of Wallingford’s board of directors, represented the club’s application for a special permit to use the lower level of the church, 211 Montowese Ave. PZC Chairman Vern Carlson suggested continuing the public hearing until the next meeting after church neighbors expressed concerns about traffic, privacy and noise. “We're very sensitive to the neighbors and I understand where they're coming from as far as the noise and the lights ... everything that they mentioned is certainly a valid thing,” Carlson said.

with neighbors and come back to the commission in July. Ulbrich and her associates have since scheduled two meetings, according to Erik Scaranuzzo, head of the North Haven Boys and Girls Club steering committee. The first meeting was to be held at the Hope Christian Church on Tuesday, June 11. The other is scheduled to be held there Saturday, June 15 at 9 a.m. “We’re going to try to be more proactive this time (with getting out information),” Scaranuzzo said. Scaranuzzo said anyone is also welcome to call the Wallingford Ulbrich Boys and Girls Club with questions. The Ulbrich Boys and Girls Club in North Haven is currently planning to open this fall, with a likely enrollment size of about 20 children to start, which they expect to expand. They plan to have

Call for increased safety follows hit-and-run death By Bailey Wright The Citizen

In an effort to increase traffic safety on Ridge Road, police plan to add shoulder striping and portable radar speed signs by the end of next month. The call for increased safety came after a hit-and-run accident in March killed local mother Maureen Munzner, who was walking along Ridge Road with her family when she was struck. A town-wide traffic study had been suggested, but Police Chief Tom McLoughlin said after reviewing quotes from engineering firms a study will likely be “very, very expensive.” Instead, he suggested other measures that would help slow down drivers and provide additional data for police to analyze. Police currently have two electric speed signs on Ridge Road that collect data. Police hope the new speed signs can also be used to monitor traffic patterns as well as slow down traffic in general. McLoughlin said the signs will cost $18,400. Radar speed signs typically display the road’s speed limit and a driver’s speed as they pass.

“Give us 90 days, let’s do this …if it doesn't work then maybe we have to take some different approach,” McLaughlin said at the May 28 meeting of the Board of Police Commissioners. “I think it’s a wise move to purchase four additional monitors,” police board chairman David Monz said during the meeting.

add single white stripes to the road to create defined shoulders. The striping would go from Dixwell Avenue to Skiff Street. The striping is estimated to cost around $400. Police have questioned a driver in the fatal hit and run but have yet to announce an arrest. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright

Wolfgang cited the Democratic majority in both chambers and an onslaught of media coverage that was “tilted in favor of attacking” the pregnancy centers as major hurdles the pro-lifers were able to clear. The measure, which passed through a key committee in March and was approved by the House of Representatives last month, bans deceptive advertising practices by the faith-based centers. Critics say staff at the facilities sometimes pose as medical professionals to lure in women and hand out misleading information about abortions. The bill would have halted deceptive advertising on billboards, buses, brochures or websites, and it would have given the state Attorney General’s office the power to seek a court order to stop those deceptive practices. Violators would have received a notice to correct the problem within 10 days. If no action was taken, the attorney general could have appealed to the courts, seeking fines or other penalties. Detractors argued that the bill threatened the centers’ right to free speech and af-

forded too much power to Attorney General William Tong, who is serving his first year in office. Wolfgang called the pro-choice lobby “too radical” in its strategy to silence faith-based institutions and characterized its mission as “viewpoint discrimination.” “It was very obvious that they were just being targeted because they were pro-life,” he said of the pregnancy centers. “The advocates of the bill never produced any objective evidence to prove that women were being deceived.” But proponents did hold up examples of what they considered specious advertising — screenshots of websites that had “Thinking about abortion?” displayed in large font across the home page. One advocate shared a screen grab of a pregnancy center website that read, “Considering abortion? Care Net is your first step.” Without licensed medical staff, they argued, the faith-based centers aren’t qualified to provide medical advice. “For someone using the internet to look for help with an unplanned pregnancy … there is a high chance that their search results may send them to a limited service pregnancy center,” Sarah Croucher, head of NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut, testified earlier this year. The bill ultimately died in the Senate Wednesday, June
