Nearly a year-and-a-half since his death, the family of Matthew “Matty” Jacques, of North Haven, is struggling to return to normalcy. It was a congenital heart defect that put Matty on a heart transplant waiting list. Ultimately, a bacterial infection ended his life at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He was 6 years old. Al Jacques, Matty’s father, was with his son through the entire fight. “He was so full of life and such a great kid,” Jacques said. “He was my best friend. I’d give my life to have him back.” Matty endured three open heart surgeries and at least 16 catherizations. There were additional stays in the hospital to treat

The Board of Education voted to raise the budget request increase to 3.5 percent instead of the 3.3 percent that was proposed by Superintendent of Schools Robert Cronin at a budget workshop on Jan. 29. The 3.5 percent increase raises the total 2015-16 budget to $49,773,032 from $49,658,208. “I think the Board of Education tried to develop a responsible budget that allows us to maintain our programs and services for students,” Cronin said. Anita Anderson, Board of Education chairman, was not entirely happy with the 3.5 percent increase. “It does not give us a lot of room to make improvements, it allows us to maintain what we have now,” she said. Staff increases with the 3.5 percent increase
