Venturing crew gives back to the community By Erin K. Butler Special to The Citizen
Many children in the North Haven area will have a happy holiday thanks to the efforts of Venturing Crew 007. This youth development program, part of the Boy Scouts of America, is open to boys and girls ages 14 to 21. The group recently collected toys at the North Haven Fairgrounds as part of the Toys for Tots Program. “This is our second year collecting for Toys for Tots,” said Donna Ryan, adult leader and treasurer for Crew 007. “The younger scouts do the food drive, so we decided to start the toy drive.” Ryan says the kids have exceeded their toy goal from last year and this year, are hoping to collect enough to help 250 kids.
“What is great about Toys for Tots is whatever is collected locally goes to those in need locally,” said Joe Delorenzo, Youth Advisor for Crew 007. In addition to community service work, the purpose of Venturing is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible adults. “It gets teens with teens, it’s fun and it keeps them busy,” Ryan said. The group gives back to the community and works on developing leadership skills as well as participates in high-adventure excursions and camping. They also mentor the younger scouts and help with scouting events. “It’s fun, it got me out of the house and helped See Tiys / Page 23
