The passage of the North Haven budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 was a relief to Mike Freda. The first selectman led efforts to amend the budget after it was defeated May 19. “I’m pleased the budget passed and we’ll be moving forward in a positive fashion,” he said Tuesday night, June 16, minutes after the results were announced by the registrar’s office. The budget passed 1,412 to 1,012. Third Selectwoman Sally Buemi, who led the opposition to the budget, said, “It passed by 400 votes and I support the democratic process.” Sixteen percent of the town’s eligible voters cast ballots, the biggest turnout in years and much higher than the 9 percent who voted on May 19, when the budget was defeated 885 to 510. “The big story is the turnout,” Buemi said. “As recently as 2012 we had 6 and 8 percent turnouts, so hopefully this will be a stepping stone to getting back to 4-to-5,000 voting in our budget referendums, which occurred 10 to 15 years ago.” Chester Sawicki, one of the voters who favored the budSee Budget / Page 17
