Budget passes by large margin at referendum By Ken Liebeskind The North Haven Citizen
A turnout of 14.7 percent of registered North Haven voters, a significant increase over last year’s 9.2 percent, supported the proposed budget heavily, leading to its passage at the town referendum Tuesday, May
17. The budget passed with 1,433 “yes” votes to 835 “no.” Voters approved a budget of $94,474,877 – $50,799,285 for the Board of Education and $43,675,592 on the town side – a 3 percent increase over the current budget that increases the mill rate 1.1 points to 30.53 and the average home’s property tax by $232.36.
“Now we can move forward with maintaining, and slightly enhancing, the overall town service model,” First Selectman Mike Freda said. A wide range of residents voted at the Mildred A. Wakeley Recreation Center, from seniors to young parents with their children by their side. Speaking of the sizable turnout,
Patty Jackson-Marshall, the Democratic registrar, said there was “better word of mouth, there were more signs out.” The North Haven PTA Council purchased 20 “Vote May 17” signs and placed them around town, accordSee Budget / Page A19

The billboard, between exits 25 and 26 in Waterbury, asks “Who’s Caring for Your Mom?” and displays a shirtless man wearing nothing but a stethoscope. The billboard was created in-house by the rehab center, located at 745 Highland Ave. in Cheshire. The advertisement is set to run for an additional three weeks, according to staff at the rehab center, who say they’ve been overwhelmed See Billboard / Page A19

Zoe Oliver, a North Haven High School senior and a student at the ACES Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, took second place recently at the annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. One of 55 semi-finalists at the event, held May 2 at Lincoln Center in New York City, Oliver read a sonnet (No. 29) performed a monologue (Queen Margaret, King Henry VI Part 3) and did a cold read of a passage from The Comedy of Errors. “The cold read was so terrifying,” the teenager said. “I was trying to act it out while coming to the page for See Competition / Page A2
