Grover Wyman Park tested for toxins and resealed By Ken Liebeskind The North Haven Citizen
At the Nov. 5 Selectman’s meeting, First Selectman Mike Freda responded to a resident’s accusation about a cancer risk at Grover Wyman Park by following through on his agreement to have the park tested.
At that meeting, Robert DeMauro shocked fellow residents with his claim that park lumber was infected with copper chromate arsenic, which can cause cancer. He claimed the town was aware of it in 2012 but did nothing until 2014. Dave Durant, another resident, called for the park to be tested and Freda agreed.
After the November selectmen’s meeting, Freda said the park would be tested within 30 days. It was tested within six days by Stevens Engineering and Environmental Services, a North Haven firm. In a report filed with the town on Nov. 11, Theodore Stevens said he tested the wood surfaces and soil at the base of the park

The North Haven High School football team defeated Wethersfield in the CIAC playoffs Class L semifinals 21-14 on Monday Dec. 7 at Mike Vanacore Field and will meet New Canaan Saturday, Dec. 12 for the state championship at West Haven. The Indians scored two quick touchdowns and looked to be on the verge of another blowout but the Eagles defense toughened up and held North Haven to one more late score and their offense scored two second half touchdowns to make it close. “Their defense was geared to stop the run and they did a pretty good job of it,” Indians coach Anthony Sagnella said. “We found seams early in the game and their kids took a couple of snaps to get up to speed.” North Haven’s Conner Suraci runs with the ball behind the blocking of Michael Montano against Wethersfield in the Class L semifinal in North | Christopher Zajac / For The Citizen See Football / Page A3 Haven, Monday evening, Dec. 7.

The town will vote on Dec. 17 to authorize First Selectman Mike Freda to coordinate town efforts to participate in MEDCOM, the emergency medical coordination service that replaced CMED that shut down on July 1. The selectmen called for a special town meeting to hold the vote at their meeting on Dec. 3. MEDCOM, which operates a 911 emergency medical pick up service for North Haven and seven other area towns, will operate more efficiently than CMED and save the town at least $23,000, the first selectman said. “Last year, the cost for the town was $53,000 and MEDCOM will reduce it to $30,000 and it may be reduced further for the same service,” Freda said. Savings are accrued by reducing the staff. “There was an executive di-
