COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS
Shop trading hours
I come from Sydney where I can go to the supermarket at any time of day or night. Shopping is so restrictive in SA. I would like to see all shop trading restrictions removed, penalty rates reduced, customer convenience considered and shop owners able to decide when they want to open.

Megan Markle debacle
What a joke Megan Markle has become. She grabbed the prince, the tiara and the title and then fled the UK for the US to escape the family, the paparazzi and the media. Now she has built herself another showy stage. No wonder the public booed her when she returned to England for a UK charity function recently.

No post office
Well, we certainly won’t be getting a post office in Mawson Lakes now. Australia Post, a governmentowned business, is planning on closing 30 branches across the country as the work-from-home trend and the rapid growth of online services has led to a significant decline in customer visits to post offices. We tried.

Salt invasion
We live in Shoalhaven and our house faces west opposite the salt lakes. Since development started there we have been invaded with salt when the winds blow and this has resulted in health problems. My eyelashes are covered in salt, my sinus is crying, my throat is strained from coughing. The salt gets into everything, so my wardrobe and drawers have a layer of salt, the air conditioner had to be cleaned, the garden is struggling and you can imagine our windows. I contacted the Council who gave me the run-around so I spoke to the Department of Lands and the Environment Protection Authority. It is a pity that Salisbury Council is more interested in development and not the wellbeing of its residents. Cherie Hicks, Mawson Lakes
Dogs Day Out
My husky and I went along to Dogs Day Out. We saw it in Northern Living Magazine. What a wonderful event. I’ve never seen so many dogs. The indoor/outdoor venue was perfect and there were demonstrations, competitions and lots of giveaways. We came for an hour and stayed all day. Events like this bring the community together. Thank you to Beau and Lauren Brug, The Lions Club and Rotary. DDO was a huge success. Nalene, Elizabeth Downs
SA Water
Maybe things will get better at SA Water following a huge number of complaints about customer service (NL/August). A senior public servant, Allan Holmes, the former chief executive of the Environment Department, has been brought out of retirement as the new chairman of SA Water. Marie Garza, Greenfields
Train alert
Now that trains are running again on the Northern Line I have to remind myself at the crossings to be alert for trains. At least they go by faster than the old models. Nicole, Gawler
Healthcare vs Teaching
I work in the demanding health profession where we believe teachers have it much easier than us. We work longer hours, do overtime, wear uncomfortable protective clothing, often don’t get proper meal breaks, suffer abuse from frustrated patients, and certainly don’t get 12 weeks holidays. Indeed many of my colleagues have left healthcare and gone into teaching for an easier life.

Documenting Flinders Ranges for World Heritage Status
The grandeur and diversity of the Flinders Ranges is being illustrated in a virtual tour that will define the 600-million-year-old Flinders Ranges as a world-class geology and palaeontology site worthy of World Heritage Status.
Using an immersive virtual tour, UniSA geologist
Professor Tom Raimondo, Director of UniSA STEM’s Project LIVE, said that the University’s expertise in virtual and augmented reality technologies enables his team to take viewers using headphones on a journey through geological time documenting the ancient landscape and reconstructing its unique past environments.
“We want to reveal the history and significance of the Flinders Ranges in an engaging, entertaining and educational way,” he said at the University’s Open Day at the Mawson Lakes campus last month.
Prof Raimondo says the 360-degree virtual tour will take viewers through deep geological time, illustrating why this ancient landscape has captured the world’s attention, not only for scientific reasons, but also for its rich cultural and mining heritage.
“The story of life began in the Flinders Ranges in its rocks, which are full of fossils. It’s like the pages of history are there for us to read,” he declares.
The scale and grandeur of this ancient landscape will be revealed by 3D fly-throughs and drone imagery that will allow users to get a bird’s-eye view of Wilpena Pound and surrounds, discovering how it was formed by massive geological forces of seismic upheaval, asteroids and glaciers.
The virtual reality project is in its initial phase with the first outputs expected in October 2022 and a fully complete tour by 2024, meeting the deadline that UNESCO has given the SA Government to support its claim for the Flinders Ranges to be listed on the World Heritage Roster, alongside other sites such as Yosemite National Park and the Galapagos Islands. LOCAL COUNCIL
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
immigration, defence. State government that looks at state issues such as public transport, schools and highways. Local council is the level of government that is closest to the people, so council members make decisions on matters such as town planning, your street maintenance and rubbish collection.
Now, have you have voted in your Local Council Elections?
Democracy means to rule by the people. In Australia we have a representative democracy which means citizens (like you) choose representatives to make decisions on your behalf.
Local Council sits as one of the three levels of government; There’s federal government that looks at policies and laws for Australia as a whole, such as
To exercise our rights as citizens we should stay informed, attend local events and contact decision makers with our opinions.
However, the biggest way you can influence democracy is to vote!

BURMILLAS by Nigella
Fred and Ginger are two handsome, aristocratic Burmilla cats (that is, a mix of Burmese and Chinchilla). They live near me in a house designed for them, full of feline furniture and cat comforts, and they have human staff to care for their every need. This month the brother and sister have a birthday. Fred writes. . .
I am a senior cat, as is my twin sister, Ginger. We turn 15 in October.
As with humans there are some advantages to ageing, such as a measure of respect from others in reverence to our vast knowledge and skills. There are also some disadvantages.
My sister and I both have arthritis in our joints. It takes a little longer to get up from a sleeping position, especially in winter. Our heated mats offer some relief on cold days. Unfortunately one of our heated mats stopped working recently and we had a tense few weeks before the staff realised this and purchased a replacement!
We also visit the V.E.T. (the staff spell out this word thinking we cannot spell) every three months for an injection which helps. Of course we find it onerous that we have to go in the car and we kick up a fuss. Why can’t the V.E.T. make house calls? The staff have also imposed a cruel diet on me. I have the option of a foul smelling wet dish or a barely palatable dry biscuit. Ginger has no such restrictions and
whenever I try a sample of her menu I get shooed away.
It really is too cruel, though I accept my lot and know the staff have the best intentions. They are only operating on the advice of the V.E.T. who said something about renal inefficiency. It may seem indelicate to mention the "water works" but I do so to out the issues of men’s health because the renal thing is apparently more prevalent in males.
As for weight loss, I am doing very well and look fitter than ever. My sister is ageing well too and though we may have gone grey, you’d never know it as we were always a beautiful silvery white. FRED

golden passionfruit
Karl says the Panama Gold variety is having a top-class season this winter and hundreds of large plump passionfruit are hanging on the vine. Instead of purple, the fruit is ready when it’s yellow and has fallen to the ground. Karl gave me a bag full of his fruit and I turned the pulp into a delicious Passionfruit Slice. Recipe is below. ED
Passionfruit Slice
Base
1 cup self raising flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup coconut
125g unsalted butter melted
Base Method
Mix ingredients together and flatten into a lined slice tin. Cook in moderate oven for approx 15 until lightly brown.
Topping
1 can condensed milk
Pulp of about 4 or 5 fresh passionfruit or a can of passionfruit pulp.
Topping Method
Pour over cooked base while warm and return to oven for 15 minutes.
When cool cut into slices with a clean hot knife
Karl Underwood tends to his passionfruit vine

KAURNA WETLANDS
is a 48-hectare hidden bushland haven of winding paths and boardwalks just across the way from Springbank Plaza Shopping Centre in Burton on Waterloo Corner Road.
With widespread treeplanting over the years, the wetlands area has been reinvigorated with a range of tree, shrub and groundcover species and developed into a variety of gentle water channels with a growing native flora and wildlife population.
The wetland includes the Tapa Wardlipari trail (‘tapa’ meaning trail and ‘wardlipari’ meaning ‘milky way’), a historically sacred area for the Kaurna people who found it to be an important resource of economic and spiritual wealth.
A short and easy 1km circuit will take you past shallow billabongs and native trees that now teem with birdlife. Up to 116 species of birds have been sighted and 21 of these are known to breed here.
The 15 minute stroll is both relaxing and educational and ideal for families who will see all manner of plants of significance to the Kaurna people. It is a mostly wheelfriendly trail meaning it can easily accommodate prams or wheelchairs.
If you’re after a bit of a run, you also have the option of the Kaurna Wetlands Loop, which is a 2.85km clay and gravel track around the wetlands that fitter folk can complete in about 20 minutes.
The impressive innovation of this wetland is that recycled wastewater from the wetlands is used to irrigate ovals and other park areas around Salisbury.
Please note that the lower ends of the walking loop may not be accessible after heavy rains. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed (max 2m leash) between 8 am and 6:30 pm. Toilet facilities can be found at the nearby shopping complex or community centre.
