COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS

New aquatic centre

After reading your coverage about the new aquatic centre in Salisbury (NL July) I took my kids there for a day out. They loved the heated pools and can’t wait for the water slides to open later in the year. Well done Salisbury Council for providing this fabulous community facility. Sophie Catarra, Parafield

Too many people

A housing problem is not the main problem in SA—we have a Population Problem. Population growth beyond our capacity is resulting in inadequate infrastructure (power, roads, water), loss of agricultural land, traffic congestion, shortages of housing and struggling hospitals. The mantra of the SA government to “build bigger and better” is not what we want. We want sustainable liveability. Harry Ossing Lights at Mawson Mawson Lakes became a vibrant precinct during Lights at Mawson. The lakeside shops were full, people were out strolling with their dogs and friends, kids wore glow sticks as they walked around the lake looking at the huge inflatable

blowups. A well-organised community scene. Can we have more like this?

Emma and Karen with dog Buffy, Mawson Lakes

E-hazards

I was walking my dog along a parkland track in Salisbury when an e-scooter came zooming behind us and a voice yelled ‘get out of the way’. It is now scary for pedestrians to walk on footpaths or walking tracks. There is no way to identify these mobile rebels. They should be licensed and have liability insurance. Who pays if they cause a collision or worse?

Siousie Popovic, Parafield

Hillsong Crash

My favourite read in Northern Living are the book reviews. I have read and enjoyed every review you have published. The review in July “Mine is the Kingdom” was particularly timely as the account of the rise and fall of the scandalplagued Hillsong Church is timely. The tax office and the Australian Charities and Not-for profit Commission (ACNC) is presently investigating the church and its charitable foundation and has warned other charities not

to use complicated financial structures to hide serious wrongdoing. As a result of investigations, donations to Hillsong are drying. It could well be the end of the Hillsong model that had become a global phenomenon.

J Turbit, Salisbury

Driverless trains

Would you catch a driverless train? We don’t have any in Adelaide yet, but they do have them on the Sydney metro network where they operate smoothly, efficiently and reliably. Driverless trains don’t make pay demands and they don’t go on strike. Won’t be long before we have them here.

Ron, former Sydney train driver Transport needs in SA I agree with Frank Whiting in NL last month - we need a greater investment in rail transport — trains to the Hills, and beyond to the Murray towns, trains beyond Gawler to the north, all with additional secure carriages for bicycles, motor bikes and e-scooters. If the SA government wants to build new housing estates it needs to invest in commuter transport. Clare De Gove, Salisbury Downs

Buying and selling a property or business is more complex than just handing over the money. There are government charges in addition to your purchase price, and many legal processes and legal documents to complete. That’s where a conveyancer enters the transaction.

Depending on your need (moving, inheritance, divorce, death, property division) a conveyancer will examine contracts and deal with stamp duty, settlements, land divisions, property transfer and land title management. Marina Walkley is a qualified conveyancer who established her business Conveyancing Solutions in Mawson Lakes. She said there can be a lot of anxiety attached to property transactions. “The role of my team of

professionals is to help clients read and understand the legal documentation, their rights and obligations and the considerable costs involved in property transfers.”

Marina said that helping people navigate their way through a complex process is rewarding. She would like to see more people enter the profession and advises that conveyancing is a particularly good profession for women. "It allows flexibility for parents, with an opportunity to work from home. It suits a person who gives attention to detail and likes to meet different people.”

TAFE offers a diploma in conveyancing and Marina would be happy to talk to anyone who would like to enter this niche career. ED

new adelaide university launches to the world

The University of South Australia (UniSA) and the University of Adelaide will merge in 2026 to become Adelaide University.

Australia’s newest major university has a new logo and website that is being rolled out.

You will see the new visual identity in many locations, including the top of this page.

Northern Living has described the symbolism and meaning of the modern design.

An abstracted stem on the letter A conveys progress and momentum.

The use of a serif treatment at the base brings stability and foundation, while the letter U utilises space to convey openness. It reveals a hidden shield.

South Australia’s border is reflected in the design at the top of the U. Can you see it?

The merging of letters in the monogram represents cohesion.

The logo of Adelaide University embodies the rich heritage of its predecessor institutions while embracing a vision for the future.

“Our approach to developing Adelaide University’s visual expression ensures that we have a compelling brand that will endure for decades to come,” Co-Vice Chancellors Professors Peter Høj and David Lloyd said.

On inception, Adelaide University will be the largest domestic educator of students in Australia.

To maintain transition to the new university, the institutions will continue to serve their communities through 2024 and 2025 and maintain necessary functions until the changeover in 2026.

ARTIST PROFILE: JENNY ATTERTON

Jenny joined the Salisbury Art Society four years ago after a friend and longtime member suggested it. She enjoys the friendly, welcoming environment and has flourished under what she calls ‘the perfect balance of comfort and mentoring.’

Jenny’s preferred medium is pan-pastels (to block in colour and values) and pastel pencils (for finer details). Her approach is literally multi layered. She prints three copies of her chosen reference picture; one in black and white to see the values needed, another at a high saturation to create more depth of colour in layers. The third copy is the original photo or picture printed on high-quality gloss paper to highlight the many details she likes to add to complete her works.

“Art gives me a sense of achievement and being part of a group with the same interests and a variety of accomplished skills, constantly helps me improve and continue to try new media and techniques.”

ARTIST PROFILE: CHARLIE MACE

91 year old Charlie Mace emigrated from England to Australia in 1965 with his wife and 5 children. He was first introduced to oil painting by a fellow firie in the Fire Brigade in England, which started him on the road to painting.

Having tried all mediums except charcoal, Charlie prefers acrylic and pastel. His subject matter is wide but he particularly likes transport subjects such as trains, planes and automobiles.

A realist artist, Charlie says he has trouble with abstract subjects and describes his technique as ‘a bit hit and miss’.

For those interested in getting started with art, Charlie suggests first deciding what your medium is, and he says that means giving anything and everything a try! Then paint what you like because, “let’s face it, you paint subjects you enjoy. Learn from your mistakes and don’t give up.”

Charlie joined the Salisbury Art Society in 1991 and says the best thing about this group is that he gets to spend time with likeminded souls.

How does decay happen?

Too many sweets right? YES, however there is more to the picture.

Some local environments in your mouth can be more conducive to decay. For example retained wisdom teeth are prone to decay because they are so far back in the mouth and difficult to clean (even for folks who are otherwise unsusceptible to decay). A poorly positioned wisdom tooth can also cause the next good tooth in the row to decay.

Another factor in decay is poorly done dental fillings. Fillings that are poorly bonded leak underneath or at their margins. Where a poorly done dental restoration has left a food trap between your teeth, this again increases the likelihood of dental decay in this area even where otherwise not susceptible.

Furthermore for folks who don’t clean between their teeth with floss – this is just a cavity waiting to happen. Most new cavities arise directly in between teeth.

Acidic diets also increase our vulnerability to decay.

Our check-ups look out for all of this stuff. Your first check and clean is gap free for clients with any dental extras cover.

FINDING GOBI

Here is a quick and easy vegetable accompaniment for dinner or a barbecue. It’s a versatile dish whereby you can add your own seasoning or herbs.

INGREDIENTS

¼ cup grated parmesan cheese

a sprinkle of paprika and pepper

3. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper and stir through grated cheese.

4. Transfer to serving bowl and sprinkle with paprika, pepper and chopped herbs.

Here is a miraculous tale about an ultramarathon runner who bonds with a scraggy terrier-like stray dog while competing in a 250km, 6-day race through the Gobi Desert in China. It’s a story about a dog, but also about the preparations and challenges facing an endurance athlete which I enjoyed.

Named Gobi by Dion, the little dog went step for step with him over the mountains, across massive sand dunes, through yurt villages of the Gobi Desert, keeping pace all the way.

As Dion witnessed the incredible determination of Gobi, he found his race motivation changing. Whereas competition in past marathon races was all about winning, his goal now was to make sure he and Gobi’s friendship continued well after the finish line. He allowed Gobi to sleep in his tent at night, gave her food and water out of his own limited supply, and carried her across numerous rivers, even when he knew it would put him behind in the race.

Although Dion did not cross the finish line first, he felt he had won something even greater – a new companion that he planned on taking home to Scotland from China as soon as arrangements could be made.

However, before he could take her home, Gobi went missing in the sprawling Chinese city where she was being kept. The city was home to thousands of stray dogs. How could he find one in the maze of the rest? Help came from everywhere to deliver a happy ending.

Finding Gobi is a heartwarming, well-written story filled with adventure and sweet emotion in which numerous lessons about resilience, perseverance, friendship and courage prevail. Also available as a children’s book.

Caring Your Feet with

CRACKED FEET

Dry cracked feet particularly around the heels is a common problem. There are several reasons this may occur.

Firstly the dry skin can be worsened by the environment. Cracked heels are more of a problem in Summer. In Summer the environment is warmer and dryer as are our walking surfaces, which may dry out the skin. In addition to this, in the warmer weather we often wear open footwear like thongs and sandals which exposes our feet to the environment.

To treat dry cracked heels we can painlessly remove dry skin, regularly apply moisturising creams, and wear more enclosed footwear.

Cracked feet in the cooler months could be due to due to conditions such as Tinea or Psoriasis. These conditions require accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Regardless of the cause, heel cracks need to be prevented and treated as they can become painful and even infected.

Regular self care includes soaking feet and filing off hard skin. Moisturiser application can help to keep feet comfortable. If it is not enough then come and visit us at Mawson Lakes Podiatry Clinic for hard skin removal and advice on footwear, and creams required to keep your feet smooth and comfortable.
