Sowing the seeds for lifelong learning
While the babies sleep in the Wattle room at Seeds Montessori at Mawson Lakes, the older children play in inviting classrooms with botanical names.
There’s the Waratah (1-2 years old) the Banksia (2-3) Acacia and Daisy (3-6) for kindergarten youngsters and older children who are preparing for school.
An Australiana theme throughout the centre is decorated with soft bush colours, natural light and calming vibes.
Co-founder Kris Antoak, said the recently refurbished centre takes children from 6 weeks to 6 years “We are a modern, family-owned facility with a happy homely feel. Parents can drop their children off from 7am and collect by 6pm."
Spacious outdoor play areas are designed for socialisation as well as exercise and fun play.
A chef in a purpose built kitchen provides everything from warm milk bottles for the babies, to nutritious meals and fruit snacks for the older children, introducing children to different flavours and tastes.
Montessori Education is based on the principle of self-guided learning that encourages children to think for themselves, develop their creativity and natural curiosity and grow with belief in themselves and a love of learning.
For children nearing school age, the centre has a School Ready Program for the 5-6 year olds conducted by a university trained teacher in Early Childhood Education.

NEXT GEN WORKFORCE LEARNING REAL WORLD SKILLS
ARTICLE BY ST PATRICK’S TECHNICAL COLLEGE
St Patrick’s Technical College continues to build bright futures for young people interested in a trade career. With a focus on providing essential real world skills and work readiness for Year 10 to 12 students to commence a career through an apprenticeship, traineeship, or employment in a skilled trade area.
St Patrick’s Technical College is a purpose-built trade school offering a unique approach to senior secondary education by delivering vocational education, training, and apprenticeship pathways. Students who have a passion for working with their hands and are keen to start a trade career can commence their trade relevant learning at the college in Year 10 and work towards obtaining their SACE. The college is renowned for delivering a relevant trade curriculum and an extensive work experience program for students to explore various trade industries, career opportunities, and experience the world of work as part of their studies.
College Principal Danny Deptula says the educational model and work experience
Students at St Patrick’s Technical College are gaining real world skills for trade careers
program affords learning of real world skills and substantial opportunities for experiences outside of the classroom.
“Our model of education is unique in that our students across Years 10 to 12 gain real hands-on experience and invaluable work practice that employers crave,” he says.
“In order to get students into apprenticeships, the best way to do that is through our educational model that allows students to identify something they are interested in then go out and explore that.”
The college’s extensive work experience program provides opportunities for students to be out in the workforce and on the tools for a minimum of six weeks each year exploring trades and areas of interest.
“Students undertake work experience placements to acquire a better understanding of industry and expectations, to build upon their work ready skills and possibly be offered an apprenticeship,” he says.
“Working in partnership with industry and connecting
with businesses provides our students with connections and opportunities for the best possible outcomes for employment.
“For students to persevere in their studies, gain valuable workplace experience and for over 100 of our students to secure an apprenticeship in 2024, demonstrates how our model of education and trade relevant curriculum provides exceptional foundation skills and knowledge for successful outcomes.”
Come and explore St Patrick’s Technical College at their upcoming Open Day. Hear from College Principal Danny Deptula and explore the purpose-built facilities, meet their passionate staff, and get first-hand insights from current students. WHAT SHOULD STUDENT WELLBEING AT SCHOOL LOOK LIKE?
ARTICLE BY GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN SCHOOL
At Good Shepherd Lutheran School Para Vista (GSPV), we understand that a child’s wellbeing is foundational to their success and happiness.
To explore what student wellbeing looks like at school, we spoke with our Wellbeing Support team, Renee Baker and Sonia Hulme. With backgrounds in social work and counselling and part of our school community for seven years, they play a vital role in building a positive and inclusive school environment.
Q: What does wellbeing support look like?
A: At GSPV, wellbeing support is provided in 3045 minute sessions during lesson time, focusing on grief and loss, managing change, developing social skills, and building emotional resilience. We also run small-group programs facilitating social enrichment like What’s the Buzz? and Seasons for Growth, a grief and loss program. Our wellbeing team also includes pastoral family support worker Georgie, and teachers with a wellbeing focus.
Q: Why is student wellbeing a priority in education today?
A: Kids who feel right, act right. Research increasingly shows the strong link between wellbeing and student success. GSPV aligns with the Australian Student Wellbeing Framework, recognising that:
• Wellbeing supports and accelerates learning outcomes.
• Early mental health intervention builds resilience and confidence.
• Social and emotional learning equips students with lifelong skills.
Q: How should schools support student transitions?
A: We are intentional in welcoming new students, ensuring they feel connected and confident as they transition into our school.
When students graduate or move on, we celebrate their journey and encourage their next steps. Many past students return for visits or to take part in community events like our annual Welcome Party, reinforcing the lasting connections formed at GSPV.
Q: How can parents and schools work together to create a strong support network for students?
A: Communication and connection are key. We offer many regular opportunities for families to engage with our school, including weekly chapel services, Coffee and Connect gatherings on Fridays, school-wide events like Sports Day and family camps, and active parent groups that meet for coffee or go on walks together.
Q: How can schools promote a culture of kindness, inclusion, and emotional wellbeing?
A: Each classroom at GSPV operates as a ‘mini community’ where students feel a strong sense of belonging. We use the URStrong friendship framework in upper primary and the Kimochis curriculum in early years, to develop social and emotional skills. Our school values, grounded in Christian faith and love, guide students in building a culture of kindness and care.
At Good Shepherd Lutheran School, we are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Through strong partnerships with families and a focus on student wellbeing, we equip children with the confidence and resilience to embrace their future with hope and joy.

Caring forYour Feet with
Mardi Edwards
WORK AND YOUR FEET
Any work that involves walking or standing for long periods of time can impact your foot comfort.
Your feet and legs have to cope with forces twice your body weight and pain in heels, arches and balls of feet are common.
Standing or walking for extended periods of time on hard surfaces can predispose you to foot and leg pain. It is important if you work on your feet to change position regularly to avoid overloading of joints and muscles and keep comfortable. Hard surfaces like concrete or tiles lack flexibility and can add to foot fatigue and pain.
It is important to wear good fitting, comfortable footwear which will support your feet, absorb shock and protect your feet. Poor fitting or inappropriate footwear can contribute to problems such as corns and calluses, bunions, hammer toes, nail problems and nerve and joint problems. The first step to comfortable feet is appropriate footwear.
In addition to reviewing your shoes, podiatrists assess foot and leg function to determine if any mechanical factors are causing your discomfort. We use orthoses to improve foot function and reduce discomfort. We are involved with the management of existing foot conditions and the prevention of foot problems.
If you have foot or leg pain call 8262 9999 for an appointment to discuss your treatment options.

ROSE BROOKS: SAVING BAROSSA’S WILDLIFE
In the heart of South Australia’s Barossa Valley, where vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see, another kind of nurturing is taking place. It’s not grapes being tended to, but the region’s native wildlife— injured, orphaned, and in need of a second chance.
At the centre of this mission is Rose Brooks, the unstoppable force behind Barossa Wildlife Rescue (BWR). For over three decades, Rose has dedicated her life to caring for all creatures great and small, turning what started as a childhood passion into a full-scale rescue and rehabilitation operation.
Rose’s journey began with a single joey named Bunty. As a child, she had a habit of bringing home injured or orphaned animals, but Bunty was the first in a long line of marsupials that would shape her life’s work. Since then, she has cared for possums, echidnas, kangaroos, koalas, and countless birds. As Rose puts it, “If it has a heartbeat, it’s worth a go!”
Barossa Wildlife Rescue has grown into a thriving, not-for-profit organisation averaging around 800 rescues or callouts each year. Whether it’s an injured possum needing rehabilitation, a displaced joey needing bottlefeeding, or an echidna found wandering too close to a road, the team at BWR steps in. Most animals are nursed back to health and released back into the wild, while others find homes in sanctuaries where they can live safely and peacefully.
For nearly 20 years, Rose ran BWR out of her own home, supported by a small network of wildlife lovers. Now with a team of over 50 dedicated volunteers, the memberled incorporated association is a fully
independent, registered charity, ensuring its work will continue for generations.
Perhaps the most exciting milestone in BWR’s history is the establishment of the Rose Brooks Wildlife Sanctuary. (See photo) This longawaited refuge, decades in the making, officially received its first residents in September. The sanctuary provides a forever home for kangaroos who can’t return to the wild, offering them safety, space, and companionship.
Bringing the sanctuary to life was a massive community effort. A band of volunteers planted 400 native trees, erected fencing, built shelters and the first three BWR joeys— Oscar the Western Grey Kangaroo, Jack the Red Kangaroo, and Pebbles the Euro—have transitioned into their new home. Two emus have also joined them as permanent residents. The success of BWR is a testament to passion, perseverance, and community spirit. What started with a single joey has become a lifeline for hundreds of animals each year.
Thanks to Rose and her team, Barossa’s wildlife has a fighting chance, and her legacy continues to thrive just like the creatures she’s dedicated her life to saving.

sit, stay, grow A JOYFUL GUIDE TO LEARNING FROM THE DOG IN YOUR LIFE
In Sit, Stay, Grow, experienced trauma counsellor Angelika von Sanden has written a joyful guide to learning from the dog in your life. Angelika invites readers to face life’s challenges with support from their furry friends. The purpose of the book is to “make you aware of your dog’s therapeutic skills and how their way of being can support you”. Across fourteen chapters, Grow explores how dogs can inspire us to have fun, help us to tackle difficult questions and to take different perspectives. Complete with a short ‘Taking a thought for a walk’ activity at the end of each chapter (a simple and accessible practice) readers lead a more enriching life.
Angelika is a well-regarded clinical supervisor and dog lover, with a background in social work. The book is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which Angelika describes as “an invitation to notice how it feels to be present and choose what matters – to unhook from unhelpful thoughts and to engage with life more joyfully.”
Russ Harris (author of The Happiness Trap) writes in his foreword: “Dogs are awesome. And one of the things the book makes beautifully clear is that there is so much we can learn from them.”
