COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS
Dog muzzles
I have a big dog and he wants to sniff everything and eat anything he finds so when we go walking I put a muzzle on him. Many people see a dog with a muzzle and think it is aggressive. Not so. My dog is sweet and sociable . When you see a dog with a muzzle, (any dog really) ask the owner if it’s OK to approach. My dog loves a hello and a pat. Leigh Comber, Parafield Gardens
Too many people
Harry Ossing has it right in ML/August when he says we have a population problem. Not enough houses? Too many people. Not enough hospital beds? Too many people. Not enough water in the Murray? Too many people. Energy shortfalls? Too many people. The government needs to stop equating population growth with economic development and concentrate on providing quality sustainable living in SA. Annika Duar
Finding Gobi
FINDING GOBI is a truly heartwarming story (NL/ August). I couldn’t put the book down and didn’t want the tale to end. Then I discovered the story of the scruffy little dog who crossed the desert in China on video on YouTube and it all came to life. Thank you for bringing this story to my attention in your Book Review in August. Carys Favaro, Greenfields
New generation of AI scams
email:
messages if you get a message from a relative asking for money or personal information. Baden Baxter, Salisbury
KESAB spring cleanup
The other day I received a message from my daughter asking for an urgent transfer of funds. Her face and her voice were on the video. I immediately called her to see if she was OK. No, she hadn’t made the call. Turns out it was a scam made using AI. Crooks are using AI (artificial intelligence) to generate a new type of scam by impersonating parents, children and close friends to generate realistic videos and voice messages. Be alert. Triple check unsolicited
Whenever I walk around Mawson Lakes I notice a lot of rubbish in the streets so I am organising a spring cleanup through KESAB (Keep South Australia Beautiful). This not-forprofit environmental organisation will provide all the equipment needed. I invite you to join the community effort. You can nominate the street/s or area you would like to clean. I’m planing a cleanup day in later September. If you’re interested please send me an email at wsutton73@icloud.com Wendy Sutton, Mawson Lakes

COME AND TRY: MAWSON LAKES MODEL YACHT CLUB
by Gaynor Kouwenhoven, Director Finance, Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club
Oh what a year we have just had! The Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club has enjoyed many activities both on and off the water. Post COVID, our membership has reached over 60! and we have been busy widely promoting our activity.
Recently, we were welcomed at Keyton Retirement Village (Trinity Green) in Mawson Lakes where our members displayed several model yachts and motor boats. Chris Levi (our President) gave an informative talk to an attentive group of both male and female residents. Before our amazing morning tea, residents had an opportunity to have a closer look at the display models and asked many, many questions and were then invited to come to our Club any Tuesday or Saturday to see them in action and maybe have a hands on “experience.”
A week or so after this presentation, we received a $500 gift card for our Club to use in any way we felt inclined. This was a thank you for our presentation and has been placed in our bank and will be the basis for our most important fundraiser BIGGEST MORNING TEA FOR 2025. This year we raised $801 for this worthy cause so we are looking toward a better total next year starting with this generous donation!
Soon we will approach another local Retirement Village with a similar presentation outlining the fun of model yacht sailing. In our experience we have found that retired persons don’t always keep busy and interested in their retirement and can fall into that “what will I do today” hole. Sometimes it will be just to get out of the house for a while, and sometimes it will release that “inner sailor” in them. They will be amongst a friendly group who will show them the ropes so they get better enjoyment from this hobby.
Our members benefit from their time at the lake especially those living on their own. They look forward to a day of sailing and friendly banter and they usually head home feeling happier for their social day out.
Our group has supported many City of Salisbury events including, Doggie Day Out, Classic Car Show, Lights at Mawson (this was a WOW with kids, parents and grand parents alike!) We also sail in our own AFTER DARK LIT SAIL twice a year. Our next such event will be WEDNESDAY 2ND OCTOBER where from 7pm our “lit” boats will sail from the Boat Shed to the Promenade and return. LOOK OUT FOR US!
Thank you to all our members and supporters for your fantastic continuing effort!
As well as this we host State and National Title events from the Boat Shed. These are well organised and well attended events and create much interest from local residents.
RC Laser SA STATE Titles 19 & 20th October & SA STATE DF65 TITLES Sun 3rd November 2024.
AFTER DARK SAIL
Be sure to put our next AFTER DARK SAIL on your calendar 2nd OCTOBER 2024!
Our Club was also gifted a collection of Model Ships from the “Foreman” collection. (A private collection from the Estate of Mr Robert Foreman OEM).
This display was well received and appreciated by all who visited to view them in their showcases at the City of Salisbury Council building. These included Cruise Ships, Tall Sail Ships, Tankers, Container Ships, Tugs etc and went for several weeks. My favourite display was the large show case by the lifts. Here we placed 2 white Tall Sailing Ships the “Gorch Foch” and the “Christian Radich”.
Several Council staff commented on these beautiful tall ships.
After their time on display they have all been allocated to good homes. Some to Retirement Villages, some to members and a few to the Port Adelaide Fishing Academy. ALL have reported a great response from families, staff and visitors alike. We have kept a couple aside so we can exchange various displays and share them around.
So, if you are interested, and in the area, call in any Tuesday or Saturday and say hello. We may even be able to give you a hands on experience.
Model Yacht Sailing is not an expensive hobby and is great to get you out of doors and into the fresh air and sunshine in a friendly environment. It will keep you active and involved. Look out for our group on Wednesday 2nd October from 7pm. Our lit fleet will sail from the Boat Shed around to the Promenade. ALL under bright little lights! WOW! what a spectacular sight!

Diabetes is a condition in which the body is unable to regulate the amount of sugar in the blood. These fluctuating blood sugar levels can have serious consequences for feet, in particular to blood flow and sensation.
Feet require a good blood supply to keep the muscles, bones, nerves and skin healthy and to heal the foot should damage occur. Poor circulation is a serious risk to foot health.
Feet also require good feedback from the nerves to identify potential threats such as a stone in your shoe, temperature extremes and to reduce the risk of falls. Reduced feeling in your feet puts them in danger.
Checkups by your podiatrist will monitor your foot health, detect early changes in your feet and provide education and treatment to keep your feet safe.
Tips to keep your feet healthy:
• maintain acceptable blood sugar levels
• check your feet daily
• don’t smoke
• exercise regularly
• wear well-fitting shoes
• annual foot health checks by podiatrist
• seek help immediately if you notice any problems like colour changes, swelling, lesions not healing
Feet are crucial for our general health, mobility and independence. Keep yours safe.
To book a foot check phone Mawson Lakes Podiatry Clinic on 8262 9999.

OLD DENTAL WORK
Is this filling ‘permanent’? A common question at the dentist. The mouth is a high wear and tear environment. We exert extraordinary forces with our bite and our teeth.
Since the inception of Dentistry, scientists and engineers have been improving material properties with respect to their tensile and compressive strength, ‘bondability’, aesthetics and biocompatibility. It has proven hard to get all of these properties in one material!
Each material has a different application and the life span is highly dependent on the size of the cavity and overall strength of the tooth. Even then, how long something may last is a statistical guess.
Highly promising in terms of cost and effectiveness has been the development of 3-D monolithic ceramics. The tooth is scanned with a 3-D camera and the material milled instantly. A perfectly fitting highly aesthetic restoration is then bonded to the tooth.
3-D milled ceramics are available and claimable on most dental extras cover at Dental on Metro – please enquire, your first check and clean visit is gap free with any dental extras cover.
