Judges at The Collins English Dictionary note the word was originally a prison term whereby prisoners were confined to their cells because of some disturbance. But last year billions of people experienced lockdown.

Today, there is widespread hatred of the word that conjures up restrictions on everything from travel to toilet paper.

Other contenders for the 2020 word of the year were “new normal”, “home schooling”, “unprecedented” and “Megxit”.

Wonder what 2021 will bring to our vocabulary? “Jab” is an obvious contender, so too “Medi-hotel”, “Blue Space” and “Circular Economy”.

We support the aged-care royal commission recommendations that from July 2022 administrators should employ registered nurses, enrolled nurses and care workers for at least 200 minutes per resident per day. Rather than aged care facilities being driven by cost containment and rationing they should be driven by resident care and service.

Dog friendly places Hi Nigella, I agree with you about dog-unfriendly places, but things seem to changing. We travel a lot with our poodle and we are finding more and more dog-friendly places, and you only have to look at the number of wedding photos that show the family dog at the centre of the ceremony to know that a fur-child is an important member of the family. Like you, if dogs are not welcome we don’t go. If it hits the hip pocket of a business it sends a strong message that they are excluding/ alienating a significant customer base. EASY E-BIKE A small, smart, electric bike is changing the nature of transport for commuters, retirees, students and caravaners.

The e-bike is a revolutionary transport mode that is proving popular across Australia, and In response to the sales surge, Jakeb Barry opened his headquarters in January in Mawson Lakes to sell DYU Electric Bikes in Australia and New Zealand.

Speaking to Northern Living from the new shop in Goodall Street, Jakeb said he has sold more than 40 e-bikes in the last month and 90 per cent of them have gone to people with motorhomes and caravans.

“People park at a caravan park for the holidays and if they want to get into town, the shops or the pub, the e-bike is easy and ready to go,” said Jakeb.

The DYU range of five e-bike models is priced from $799 to $999.

Depending on the model, features include a powerful 250W motor that can reach a max speed of 25km/hour and a 45km range. Cruise control and bump reducing seat suspension assists comfort.

Anti-theft and LCD control technology makes the ultra-quiet bike a safe bet.

“A model with folding handlebars weighing only 16kg allows you to carry your bike anywhere and park it in your office or lab, place it inside a vehicle or on a balcony. It’s ideal for apartment living and other small spaces, and it can travel beside you on public transport,” said Jakeb.

“A large number of the bikes we sell are for commuters getting out of a bus or car and riding to and from work – it’s no sweat and an incredibly cheap form of transport.” ED

“I travel widely in Europe and Scandinavia where I see that transport is changing rapidly.

Small electric cars and bikes are an essential way to cope with crippling traffic congestion. As I look at compact residential suburbs here, such as North Adelaide, Bowden, Prospect, Mawson Lakes and Blakeview, I see tight urban living similar to Europe, but Adelaide is about 10 years behind, still relying on the combustion engine. We need a change of thinking and more electric vehicles, safe bike paths and storage racks.”

EASTER BRINGS HOPE For many people in our world, the isolation and the hopelessness of 2020 goes on. Dark times happen to all of us at some stage in our lives. When they do we search for something to bring a sense of meaning to the event.

We look for glimmers of hope that give us the will to go on.

The story of Easter, when Jesus was crucified on the cross (the day we now refer to as ‘Good Friday’) tells us that “darkness came over the whole land”. I have no doubt that people were wondering what was happening – a bit like us, wondering what was happening to our world in 2020.

The Bible tells us that on the day Jesus was crucified it felt like the end. But it wasn’t! Three days later Jesus was brought back to life by the power of his Father, God, so that you and I could find light in an otherwise dark, hopeless world.

Your darkness does not have to last. Knowing Jesus can bring meaning to your life you never thought possible and you’ll never have to face your dark times alone again.

THE POSITIVE BENEFITS OF

BLUE SPACE Studies show that water bodies score just as well – if not better – in supporting psychological wellbeing.

Urban congestion has community leaders realising that integrating nature into cities is an effective strategy to improve wellness and mental health.

Doctors around the world now administer “green prescriptions” where patients are encouraged to spend time in local green spaces to benefit psychological well-being and increase social engagement.

But what about “blue spaces” – water settings such as a lake, a creek, riverside trails, wetlands, and a waterfront? Can they deliver the same wide-ranging benefits that urban green infrastructure brings?

A survey of people using Sir Douglas Mawson Lake undertaken

by Dr Morgan Schebella from UniSA in 2020 reveals that people value the lake for exercising, relaxing and socialising. Dr Schebella’s data shows that the lake and surrounds has a high level of public use daily particularly with adults ranging in age from 18 to 64. “My data indicates that respondents value spending time outdoors, improving fitness, soaking in the tranquility and observing the wildlife. The lake offers a gentle place to escape stress and observe nature. Others like to picnic and enjoy outdoor dining,” she said.

Health benefits from blue spaces arise through a number of pathways. One is that water has the ability to reduce heat stress in a hot climate. Water can help dampen traffic noise thereby lessen the stress caused by a loud cityscape. Researchers also report a direct effect on stress regulation, by inducing calm.

Urban planners and councils are investigating Blue Designs in innovative ways. They see the water-centric-city as a key strategy in adapting to climate change and in managing water resources in sustainable and resilient ways.

By including a wide range of interactive and passive water features, a blue design can help manage stormwater and reduce our urban heat islands. All of which are critical factors in urban lifestyles.

In Northern Adelaide there are many blue spaces, so look out for them and consider these benefits.

WATERSHED creative prize 2021 This year heralds a relaunch of the premier northern Artprize, as the Watershed Creative Prize. This will encourage creative people to capture what sustainability means to them.

THE CATEGORIES Traditional – photography, painting, sculpture, pottery/ceramics

An expanded range of mediums will include 3 categories - traditional artworks, written works, and those that use emerging technologies.

Emerging Technologies – music composition, dance, singing or theatrical performance, podcast, drama or vocal performance, videography/film making

A $2000 prize will be awarded to the best artwork in each of the three categories, judged by the panel to best represent the theme of SUSTAINABILITY. There are also three runner up prizes of $500 each, an Emerging Youth Creative Artist Prize worth $1000 and the Northern Living Editor’s Choice Award.

Artworks can be made available for sale by the owners in a large scale exhibition at the Salisbury Community Hub. The Watershed Creative Prize finalists will be exhibited in the John Harvey Community Hall for six weeks from 10 May to 18 June 2021.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN ACTION The world is facing a waste crisis. We’re using up resources, paying increasing dollars to get rid of waste and we’re running out of landfill options. It’s not sustainable.

To deal with the problem, a new concept sweeping the world is called the Circular Economy. It promotes ways to transform waste into valuable products by reusing them, remodelling, and making new products from waste.

Speaking at the Northern Business Breakfast, Melinda Miller, director of the Loop Circular Economy Platform, said, “from food and agriculture to manufacturing, mining, retail, construction and service industries, there are opportunities to do business in innovative ways that marry good business with a good environment and a good economy”.

A company in Northern Adelaide that is leading the world in circular economy practices is NAWMA (Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority).

NAWMA uses solar panels and gas from landfill to generate electricity, turns glass into sand for industry, recycles mattresses and reduces landfill.

By processing a range of materials including plastics, aluminium, steel and glass they are providing secondary raw materials for industry.

Governments are offering incentives for action such as the Federal Government's $190million Recycling Modernisation Fund, the South Australian single-use plastics ban and the SA 2020-2025 waste strategy “Supporting the Circular Economy.”

You’ll hear more about these initiatives in the next few years as the world shifts to more sustainable practices. ED

Most modern production processes are based on ‘linear’ systems which generate waste as a byproduct. This model takes, makes, uses and disposes.

A circular loop recycles, refurbishes, maintains and repairs. Waste becomes resources in another form, not destined for landfill.

A local example is the use of end-of-life tyres as the sub-surface for the running track at the Bridgestone Athletics Centre.

ARTIST’S IMPRESSION OF RIVERLEA, BUCKLAND PARK

The opening of the Northern Connector linking the South Road Superway and Port Wakefield Road is spurring development in the north.

The first sod for a new suburb called Riverlea at Buckland Park was turned in February. The $3billion development will be built over the next 20 years and will offer 12,000 homes for 30,000 people by 2036. There will be a major shopping centre with commercial offices, modern schools, 50ha of lakes and 420ha of open space. The site is between Virginia and Port Gawler about 35km from the centre of Adelaide.

Other residential growth areas in the north include the expansion of the Virginia township and surrounding areas and the growth of Angle Vale with an additional 700ha underway. The zoning changes aims to accommodate future population and employment growth for the cities of Playford and Salisbury.

BUBBLE TEA

During the First World War families baked biscuits to send to their loved ones overseas. ANZAC biscuits (previously known simply as soldier's biscuits) were based on a traditional Scottish oat cake recipe, made from readily available ingredients with the addition of golden syrup to keep them moist and preserve them on their long journey.

A new rave is bubble tea - a sweet, colourful drink that is growing in popularity across the northern suburbs. Outlets such as Chatime, Gotcha, Gong Cha and Ucool are promoting a beverage that is low-fat, low-calorie and anti-inflammatory.

It's a milk or fruit-based drink that’s shaken and sweetened, but the bubbles don’t come from carbonation; they come from a variety of tapioca pearls or fruit jellies that are added to the drink.

A large range of flavours and fragrances entice customers with exotic names such as 'Grape Green Tea', 'Lychee Oolong Tea with Aloe', 'Mango Alisan Tea’ and ‘Bamboo Charcoal Milk Tea’.

The hardest part is to choose your flavour!

“It’s addictive,” said Elizabeth who is a student at UniSA. She buys a bubble tea two or three times a week and says it’s a cool thing to have when hanging out with friends. “It's much better than alcohol.” ED

INGREDIENTS 1 cup plain flour

3 tablespoons golden syrup

1 cup rolled oats 2/3 cup desiccated coconut 3/4 cup sugar 125g butter

1/2 teaspoon bi-carb soda 2 tablespoons boiling water

METHOD 1. Mix together flour, sugar, coconut and rolled oats.

2. Combine melted butter and golden syrup.

3. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add to butter and syrup mixture.

4. Make a well in the centre of the flour mix and pour in the liquid. Stir until combined.

5. Roll spoonfuls into small balls and place 5cm apart on a lined tray. Bake in a preheated oven for 15-20 minutes at 160 degrees.

MINT LEAF LOUNGE

A gorgeous sparkling chandelier brought all the way from India greets guests as they arrive at the Mint Leaf Lounge, Mawson Lakes.

Elegantly decorated and perfectly positioned overlooking the main lake, the restaurant offers fine dining with sensational views in a relaxed atmosphere.

The abundant menu features a comprehensive selection of authentic North Indian dishes, along with some fusion offerings and plenty of choice for Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten-Free diners.

The impressive seafood tasting plate was divine, featuring tasty morsels of chick pea battered barramundi bites, pepper-fried squid, melt-in-yourmouth tandoori salmon and my favourite, vodka flambéed chilli aioli prawns.

The chef is more than happy to cater to western palates and we were delighted to be able to request mild and chilli-free versions of everything for one of our guests.

All of the mains came served in delightful copper balti dishes accompanied with free rice. We sampled a mild butter chicken enriched with cashews and cream and a delicious, intensely flavoured vegan chickpea and potato curry. We sopped up the delicious sauces with blue cheese and chicken tikka naan.

We were greeted with complimentary papadums and Indian crisps accompanied by a trio of delicious dipping sauces, and our starters arrived soon after.

The highlight for me was the calcutta prawn curry with curry leaf, mustard seeds and tamarind - and the biggest, fattest, juiciest prawns!

The food is high quality and affordable and servings are very generous, luckily we were offered takeaway containers for our leftovers!

Mint Leaf Lounge offers a fusion of great taste and soul satisfying ambience.

Five Australian picture books that celebrate DIVERSITY

Early exposure to diverse story characters, including in ethnicity, gender and ability, helps young people develop a strong sense of identity and belonging. It is also crucial in cultivating compassion towards others.

C

hildren from minority backgrounds rarely see themselves reflected in the books they’re exposed to. Research over the past two decades shows the world presented in children’s books is overwhelmingly white, male and middle class.

A 2020 study in Australian childcare centres showed only 18% of books available included non-white characters. Animal characters made up around half the books available and largely led “human” lives, adhering to the values of middle-class Caucasians.

The Australian Educational Researchers recent investigation into award-winning and shortlisted picture books, looked at diversity in representations of Indigenous Australians, linguistically and culturally diverse characters, characters from regional or rural Australia, gender, sex and sexually diverse characters, and characters with a disability.

From these, they compiled a list of recommended picture books that depict each of these five aspects of diversity. All are available at your local library.

ABORIGINAL TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER CHARACTERS Tom Tom, by Rosemary Sullivan and Dee Huxley (2010) depicts the daily life of a young Aboriginal boy in a fictional community — Lemonade Springs.

The landscape, in many ways, resembles the Top End of Australia.

Tom’s 22 cousins and other relatives call him Tom Tom. His day starts with a swim with cousins in the waters of Lemonade Springs, which is covered with budding and blossoming water lilies. The children swing on paperbark branches and splash into the water. Tom Tom walks to Granny Annie’s for lunch and

spends the night at Granny May’s. At preschool, he enjoys painting. Through this picture book, non-Indigenous readers will have a glimpse of the intimate relationship between people and nature and how, in Lemonade Springs, a whole village comes together to raise a child.

CHARACTERS FROM OTHER CULTURES That’s not a daffodil! by Elizabeth Honey (2012) is a story about a young boy’s relationship with his neighbour, Mr Yilmaz, who comes from Turkey.

Together, Tom and Mr Yilmaz plant, nurture and watch a seed grow into a beautiful daffodil.

The author uses the last page of the book to explain that, in Turkish, Mr Yilmaz’s name does not have a dotted “i”, as in the English alphabet, and his name should be pronounced “Yuhlmuz”. www.northernliving.info

CHARACTERS FROM RURAL AUSTRALIA All I Want for Christmas is Rain by Cori Brooke and Megan Forward (2017), depicts scenery and characters from regional or rural Australia. The story centres on a little girl’s experience of severe drought on the farm.

In terms of diversity, it is equally important to meet children living in remote and regional areas as it is to see children’s lives in the city.

GENDER NONCONFORMING CHARACTERS Granny Grommet and Me by Dianne Wolfer and Karen Blair (2014), is full of beautiful illustrations of the Australian beach and surfing grannies.

Told from the first-person point of view, it documents the narrator’s experiences of going snorkelling, surfing and rockpool swimming with granny and her grommet (amateur surfer) friends.

In an age of parents’ increasing concern about gender stereotyping (blue for boy, pink for girl) of story characters in popular culture, Granny Grommet and Me’s representation of its main character “Me” is uniquely free from such bias.

The main character wears a black wetsuit and a white sunhat and is not named in the book (a potential means Please mention

of assigning gender). This genderneutral representation of the character does not reduce the pleasure of reading this book and it shows we can minimise attributes that symbolise stereotypes such as clothing, other accessories and naming.

CHARACTERS LIVING WITH A DISABILITY Boy by Phil Cummings and Shane Devries (2018) is a story about a boy who is Deaf. He uses sign language to communicate but people who live in the same village rarely understand him.

That is, until he steps into the middle of a war between the king and the dragon that frightens the villagers. He resolves the conflict using his unique communication style and the villagers resolve to learn to communicate better with him by learning his language.

There’s nothing I like more than checking out a new walk. So, one afternoon mummy and I set off to explore the recently completed pathway that runs from the Mawson Lakes Dog Park at Park Way, to see where it would lead us.

It turned out to be a fabulous walk through a tunnel under Main North Road which meant we didn't have to cross any busy roads, along forested trails beside gently running water and across bridges over Dry Creek.

All this ended in a fabulous green space called Lindblom Park at Pooraka that has lots of play equipment including a super doopa flying fox. There were big green ovals, bbq sites (good smells here) and a toilet block.

All this fun took us about one and half hours return, although we did stop to chat and play along the way and we do stroll quite slowly. Faster models could do it in much shorter time.

Balancing Act is an art installation located in the Japanese styled grounds of Mobara Park and is a well recognised feature of Mawson Lakes. It was installed in 2004.

The outdoor sculpture sits at the entrance to the Garden of Blossoms where rows of ornamental pear trees create a veil that opens up as you walk further into the park. The changing colours of the leaves accentuate the seasons

The three concrete sculptures

by Marijana Tadic symbolise a balance between our inner needs, such as tranquillity and comfort, versus material abundance and economic progress.

The work makes references to North and South as two different hemispheres, and East and West as two cultures that have evolved from different traditions but share similar values, aspirations and design principles.

with computerised sensoractivated lighting. The work is inspired by geometric simplicity that shares the serenity and clarity characteristic of traditional Japanese architecture.

The sculptures are placed over the gentle curved mound, designed to evoke a sense of movement or rolling effect.
