An invitation to a wedding of a young couple saw me at a ceremony unlike any I had been to before. It was a modern ‘minimony’ wedding in the style of The Knot Trend, a response to covid’s emergence.

For starters, it was held in a nature-inspired private garden on a Thursday afternoon and the vibe was relaxed. Mother-of-the-bride picked all the flowers from her garden, white plastic seating was protocol-spaced and a food truck provided individual servings, with a wine that the couple enjoyed on their first date - a nice touch of sentimentality that allowed them to create something that was entirely their own.

Someone had a drone in the air taking photographs from above.

Individually wrapped wedding cupcakes made by the bride’s sister were given to each guest. This intimate minimony wedding was a lovely, low cost, covid-safe celebration.

But the thing that remained the same was the bride’s gorgeous gown in ivory (trending colour) even thought the groom was dressed in cute-casual. It encouraged me to talk to Liz Wall from Forever You Bridal in Mawson Lakes about bridal trends.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS Cautious of cyber risk Cybersecurity is a big threat so thank you Northern Living for giving us information on cyber attacks in NL/Dec. It made me realise I have my bank, emails, social media, fitness tracker and other sensitive data linked to my phone so I am a centralised target for scammers. Your article changed my mobile phone habits. It alerted me to a scam from a ‘parcel delivery company’ who contacted me to say they had a parcel for me and asked for my details. If I had not read the NL article I would have been caught out. I am much more cautious now. Torrey Mobile data catches crook The useful advice in Northern Living/Dec on how to reduce cyber attacks motivated me to upgrade my security habits. But not all internet activity is to the detriment of users. I notice the police used mobile telephone data to help them track the abductor of Cleo in WA. Cabet Brown Q&A axed In the beginning I was a loyal viewer of Q&A on the ABC, but during the last year I haven’t tuned in, so it doesn’t surprise me that the once popular panel show has been cancelled. The show’s autopsy will reveal that the once intelligent, balanced panel discussion lost it’s way. It became overstocked with left leaning panelists who had a barrow to push and were given far too much time to air their grievances. The show became 4 northern

an aggressive display where conservative views were ridiculed. In the end the mainstream conservative voice disappeared and we were left with minority views that were constantly critical of the Establishment. Zac Saidanna The sunshine vitamin Being vaccinated is a step towards covid protection but we can do more to increase our natural defence by getting vitamin C and vitamin D to boost our immune system.

The best part about Vitamin D is that it’s free! It comes from exposure to the sun and that’s why its called the ‘sunshine vitamin’. This year 2022 the world population has grown to 7.9 billion. According to United Nations projections, world population in 2030 will reach 8.5 billion and in 2050 will reach 9.9 billion. Projecting into the future using current population statistics, by 2120 world population will be 13.7 billion. When a married couple boasts 17

Bill Bowers Social Media bite back When NL published an article in Dec on cyber crime it warned about social media and focused mainly on theft of personal information. But that’s not the only threat. A recent court case reported a PR woman who falsely accused bicycle champion Mike Turtur of lying about the Tour Down Under. Fearing for his reputation, Turtur took her to court claiming defamation. The judge found in Turtur’s favour and ordered the woman to pay $30,000 in compensation plus all court costs which would double her outlay. The moral of the story is: be careful what you say on social media, it can come back to bite you. WEDDING TRENDS Helping brides select the perfect dress is a gentle skill that Liz Wall has learned from working in the bridal industry.

Liz recently opened her own bridal salon Forever You Bridal in Mawson Lakes, and on the day I interviewed her for this story a wouldbe bride and her family walked into the shop so I was able to see first-hand the process of selecting a wedding outfit.

Before a dress is tried on there are many questions to explore such as when and where the wedding will be held, how the dress will look in photographs, others colours in the bridal party etc.

“Bridal wear is a very competitive business so you need a point of difference,” said Liz.

Couples are nervous about the possibility of lockdowns, quarantine, social distancing and guest limits, so they are seizing any window of opportunity which means planning is short and gowns are needed more urgently. As a result of the pandemic, more couples are eloping and taking their wedding outfits with them,” said Liz. ED

ADELAIDE BECOMES A

NATIONAL PARK CITY Adelaide has just been named a National Park City. Already the third most liveable city in the world, and now the world’s second National Park City (after London) South Australia is keen to promote our existing green and nature spaces, and inspire the creation of new ones across the city and suburbs.

Environment Minister David Speirs said the prestigious status would bring global recognition for Adelaide’s environment, attract visitors and enable more investment and interest in nature-based tourism, as well as attracting more funding for innovative environmental projects. “It will result in a cooler, greener and wilder city”, he said.

The Adelaide’s National Park City submission was brought to life with the modern artwork of emerging artist Lucinda Penn. This added a fun, engaging and creative feel to the formal submission.

Lucinda said her art represents Adelaide in an abstract and colourful way from the hills to the sea, from a platypus in the Torrens, to our iconic hills landscape, as well as parks and wineries.”

For many cultures, the dawn of the new year is marked not only with celebration, but also the opportunity for personal reflection and growth. As the year progresses, our initial drive for self-betterment can falter. The good news is our tendency to give up can be circumvented.

There are various ways we can strengthen our commitment to our new year’s goals.

to sticking to resolutions, insight gleaned from psychology research can be distilled into these nine practical and easy-to-apply tips.

1) SET RESOLUTIONS THAT MATCH YOUR DEEPER VALUES Your personal beliefs and hopes have a key role in sustaining your motivational impetus and keeping you focused. This form of motivation is associated with increased personal well-being.

2) TRY TO SET “NEW” RESOLUTIONS This is preferable to recycling old ones. If you still want to

pursue a resolution from last year, try to be more specific in your approach.

3) SET RESOLUTIONS AS SPECIFIC PLANS These should account for factors such as time, place and people. Specific plans provide the mental cues needed to stick to our goals.

This is because they’re also less mentally taxing than more vague or generic plans that require further thinking.

For instance, consider this resolution: “I will walk for at least 30 minutes around the nearby lake with my friend Sam on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.”

Frozen fruit snacks Ice blocks are a refreshing treat on a sunny day. Cool off by making your own delicious and healthy homemade frozen snacks. You don't really need a recipe, as essentially you are just freezing fruit and juice in icypole moulds but here are some flavour ideas for inspiration.

TUTTI FRUITTI 1 cup of mixed chopped fruit of your choice.

2 cups of fruit juice.

Fill moulds half way with fruit and top up with juice before freezing.

SMOOTHIE POLES 1 banana 200g strawberry yoghurt 2 cups milk Blend banana, yoghurt and milk. Pour into moulds and freeze.

MANGO LASSI 2 peeled and chopped mangoes.

1/2 cup yoghurt or coconut milk.

Blend until smooth, pour into moulds, freeze.

BERRY BLEND 250g mixed berries (fresh or frozen). juice of 1 lemon.

4 tablespoons cordial, water or juice.

Blend until combined, leaving a few berry chunks for texture. Freeze and enjoy!

If you have the patience, try combining a few flavours in layers. Fill the mould 1/3 of the way with one flavour and freeze. Then pour a second flavour on top and freeze again. Go for a third if you're game!

KEEPING COOL IN SUMMER by Nigella I really don’t like summer.

Early morning walks and late evening outings are nice but mummy leaves me at home a lot in summer for fear of the heat. I crave a walk but urban pavements and black bitumen get very hot, and even in the evenings the roads can still be hot, while the hot sand at the beach can burn a doggie’s feet. I wish I could throw on a pair of thongs when we go to the beach as our paws are sensitive and can easily burn.

Note to owners :

Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition because we only perspire around our nose and paws which is not sufficient enough to cool our bodies. We pant to keep cool by evaporating moisture so we need cool air and water on a hot day or we are at risk of overheating.

We need special care in summer.

Please don’t leave us outdoors.

We need plenty of shade and shelter from the sun.

Dogs can get skin cancer too, especially on the nose.

Every summer my nose gets darker. It's nature’s way of putting more pigment into my skin to protect my face from sunburn, but it is possible to buy pet sunscreen.

Do not leave us in a closed shed or garage with nowhere to escape the hot air .

NEVER, ever, leave us in a car – the temperature inside will get very hot, very quickly and a dog can die within minutes.

Walk us early in the morning or later in the day when the temperature has dropped, but be aware that the pavements can still be hot.

Don't leave our food outside in the heat – if not eaten straight away, cover it and put it in the fridge for later.

If we are panting, sweating, weak or drooling it could indicate heat stress so: • Move us to a cool place, drape a cool wet towel over us or spray us with a bottle or the hose. Maintain air flow with a fan.

• Give water – you may have to pour some into our mouth and pat our face with a cool wet cloth.

• If overheated, stand us in water up to our belly. Myself, I like a spray under the hose on a really hot day. A short run to dry off is exhilarating when wet.

We must have clean, fresh water placed in the shade. Some of my friends like ice blocks in their water or frozen water bottles to lick. When walking we need more water than usual so take a doggie water container in summer.

ST AUGUSTINE’S CHURCH Among one of the oldest constructions in South Australia, the St Augustine’s Church on Commercial Road Salisbury features a distinctive old Gothic style that has earned it State Heritage listing.

Walter Hunter was the architect and the project began in 1847 6 following funding from voluntary 8 subscription.

A temporary church that was constructed of wood was 10 demolished from the site in 1848.

On the 1 April 1851 the first foundation stone was laid. A man named Andrew O’Leary provided bullocks to early settlers who carted stones for the church from the nearby hills.

Labour shortages caused by the Victorian gold rush caused setbacks to the construction and the death of both the architect and the builder created further delays.

The community decided to purchase a large bell for the church in 1882. A one-ton bell was acquired from Murphy’s Bell Foundry in Dublin by Bishop Christopher Augustine Reynolds.

The bell was in service by 2 December 1883 and was housed in a wooden belfry at the rear of the church for 42 years.

In 1920 a high altar was gifted to the congregation by Miss Nellie Sheehan of Melbourne in memory of her parents. The church was renovated and refurnished by the Parish Priest Reverend Fr Morrison and a bell tower was completed in 1925 as part of the project.

The Heritage Listed St Augustine’s Church is still used today for wedding ceremonies. A new St Augustine’s Church was built in 1972 next to the old church.
