Future of the Mawson Lakes Golf Club
The Mawson Lakes Golf Club has been purchased by Renewal SA through the University merger by the State Government. The Golf Club has a lease that is being honoured and will continue. Any future development would be subject to a Masterplan. Beau Brug Councillor for West Ward
Crude comedians
I went to the Fringe for a good laugh. But this was hard to find. It seems these days that comedians use swear words and vulgar gags to get a laugh. It’s crude, not funny. Andy Landseer, Greenfields
Insurance too expensive
Home insurance is out-ofreach as insurance surges 16 per cent which is four times higher than the inflation rate (ABS data). Like many others, I have decided not to renew my house and content policies, especially when insurance companies recorded big profits in 2023, eg Suncorp $660m, IAG 248m, Medibank $263m. Melissa May, Parafield Gardens
Rail expansion
The article in NL/March on High density housing near Northern Suburbs train stations is a sensible idea but it does not go far enough. As the North develops we need rail beyond Gawler to Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla to support the government’s plans to develop industrial centres in these regional areas. Krystal Soltariou, Elizabeth
Cost of Voice
Further to the community comment in NL/April admonishing the SA First Nations Voice I would like to know what this is costing tax payers. What is the cost of setting up this indigenous voice (advertising, polling)? Costs for transport and accommodation for far-away elected members? What will the 12 elected members be paid? How much will the government pay to administer the Voice that was convincingly rejected in a national referendum?
Alex Todd, Pooraka
NO fishing in the lakes
Thank you for the comment from Bailey the Border Collie in March 2024 about the danger to swans from fishing gear in the lakes. Until recently I lived alongside Dry Creek, near a pedestrian bridge over the creek. I became alarmed when I saw fishers cast their lines back over their shoulders, narrowly avoiding hitting pedestrians and cyclists with their hooks. I was also worried that the fish which our waterbirds need were being depleted. I went to Salisbury Council and asked whether fishing was permitted, and the Council said that Mawson Lakes is covered by specific regulations, and fishing is NOT allowed. Subsequently I have seen Council staff approaching people fishing Dry Creek. The danger to pets like Bailey, and even to wildlife like raptors and Rakali is another aspect of concern. If you see fishing in the lakes please report it to Council. Mary (formerly of Mawson Lakes)
Airspeed wins contract

A regional council has changed the Acknowledgement of Country to be more inclusive and meaningful. It now says at the start of meetings: “We acknowledge and respect our complex history. We welcome everyone to build our future together.” I would like to see Salisbury Council adopt a more inclusive welcome along the same lines to reflect our modern community that is diverse in culture, religion and language. BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS FOR Mother’s Day
A visit to the flower shops in Japan was the inspiration for Leanne Lai to come back to Adelaide and start her own florist business called Sunday Blooms.
Leanne who was working as a speech pathologist knew that floristry was a passion that triggered her creativity and was to be her future direction.
"I started slowly by making my arrangements at home and putting photos on instagram. The response was immediate and my online orders started to grow from word-of-mouth and recommendations."
Then this year, Leanne opened a shop on Euston Walk in Mawson Lakes and filled it with flowers and other decorative items sourced from local craftspeople. She has candles, chocolates, a small range of earrings and her own selfdesigned gift cards.
"I'm gearing up for Mother’s Day when I will go to the Adelaide flower market and buy seasonal flowers including chrysanthemums, tulips, roses

and carnations which are a crowd favourite to celebrate their loved ones. These are sourced from both local and imported farmers to ensure that the flowers you bring home are fun, fresh and delightful."
"A popular gift that I like to make up are flower arrangements catered to each customer. I ask that the customer provides me with a colour preference, a description of the receiver and a budget and I will personalise the bouquet to bring great joy to the receiver,” says Leanne who likes to add artistry to her designs. Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority’s (NAWMA) last kerbside bin audit showed that on average 48% of the contents of the RED lid general waste bins is food scraps and garden clippings. This matter should be going into the GREEN lid Bin. The contents of RED lid Bins are sent straight to landfill instead of being recycled into compost.
HOW TO USE GREEN BINS PROPERLY
• Green-lid Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins are now FREE for all residents in City of Salisbury, City of Playford and Town of Gawler if you don’t already have one.
• When you order a new FOGO bin from NAWMA, you can choose between a small (140L) or large (240L) size.
• The green-lid FOGO bin is collected every fortnight on the alternate week to the yellow-lid recycling bin.
• If you order a FOGO bin from NAWMA, you will receive a free ventilated kitchen caddy to collect your food scraps.
• Many types of food scraps (including pizza and the boxes!) can go in the green bin.

WHO DO YOU THINK THESE WELL-KNOWN AUSTRALIANS ARE?
Celebrated interactive artwork by Martin Shaw is coming to Mawson Lakes in May. The painting (pictured) titled Three Well Known Australians is characterized by three minimalist stick-figure set against a striking yellow backdrop. Who do you think these identities represent?
Shaw's interactive exhibition invites viewers to immerse themselves in his creation.
“Some of these prominent people will be forgotten in 100 years but some will endure the test of time.”.
Participants are encouraged to engage in the timeless game of conjecture, offering their interpretations of the three figures and recording their thoughts in a dedicated yearbook, thus contributing to the ongoing narrative surrounding the artwork.
At the heart of Shaw's artistic vision lies a delicate balance between revelation and concealment.
While the temptation to uncover the identities of the depicted individuals persists, Shaw remains resolute in his commitment to preserving the mystery, recognizing that the true essence of the painting lies not in its subjects but in the dynamic interaction between artist and audience.
In Shaw's own words, "I’m
Shaw describes his project as trying to “capture the spirit” of Australia.
“The true significance of the artwork lies in its ability to evolve alongside the shifting perceptions of its audience,” says Shaw.
“With each passing generation, the narrative surrounding the painting undergoes a subtle metamorphosis, reflecting the ever-changing tapestry of societal consciousness.”
The exhibition beckons viewers to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Australia’s cultural landscape, inviting speculation, contemplation, and connection.
“The painting doesn’t change, what changes is your perception.”

With his travelling exhibition, Shaw seeks to create, and reflect back, a snapshot of the country at that moment in time.
Three Well Known Australians has been touring Australia since 1982. Since then it has visited over 252 venues. It will be on display at The Mawson Centre until Friday 24th May 2024.

CLEVER TEETH
More goes on in our mouth than we might realise.
We all start out as youngsters with a set of small teeth (the primary or deciduous teeth).
Often before our mouth is even big enough to accommodate them, a second set of supersized adult teeth arrive!
As it is the front adult teeth that present first, often around the age of 6, for many kids it looks like they’ll never all fit in. But at the same time the skeleton is continuing to grow. Furthermore as the baby teeth in the back are lost, the adult replacements are actually not bigger than the baby teeth, they are in fact smaller!
Combining this with the skeletal growth, what initially looks like crowded teeth in the early stages, can indeed find room to fit in over time. The final result comes down to the combined size of the teeth once full skeletal growth potential is met. This will establish itself in due course.
Of course big teeth in a small mouth equals crowding. Ultimately this falls to our genes and is difficult to predict, even for dentists.

Movie Review
by Linda Vining
MOTHERING SUNDAY
The story is set on Mother's Day in 1924 and revolves around one day, but the consequences are profound and life changing.
Families gather to celebrate the forced engagement of Emma and Paul, but Paul is late to the party. Where is he?
Unbeknown to all family members, he is embraced in a passionate tryst with his long-time, secret young lover Jane.
A lot happens in one day but it’s not until the end of the film that the consequences are revealed.
Basically the film analyses the evolution of Jane as a writer and the source of her inspiration as she develops into an acclaimed novelist.
The viewer needs patience for this slow moving, somewhat disjointed narrative where time changes back and forth. The story involves romance, graphic intimacy, the grief suffered by a mother who has lost two sons in WW1 and Jane’s subsequent loss. There’s no violence just respectful language and British good manners.
For a viewer who appreciates strong acting, Colin Firth, Olivia Coleman and Josh O’Connor give the movie depth and emotion.
I borrowed the DVD from the library and watched it twice to understand its direction and the delicate nuances that I missed the first time round.
The ending says it all. Released in 2021. ED
The goal is to fill a 9x9 grid with numbers so that each row, column and 3x3 section contains all of the digits between 1 and 9.

Caring for Your Feet with
Mardi Edwards
EXPERIENCING FOOT PAIN?
The main reason people see a podiatrist is because of pain. Feet are complex structures responsible for keeping us mobile.
Pain stops us from doing the things we want or need to do, like walk the dog, play sport, or chase after grandchildren.
As podiatrists, we see people with a variety of pains from many different causes. Some of the conditions we see include sprains and strains, tendonitis, arthritis, shin splints, heel pain, corns and calluses, blood clots, neuropathy, warts and ingrown toe nails.
No single treatment works for everyone which is why it is so important to see a podiatrist to get an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your specific condition and needs.
Treatment for pain may include things such as stretching and strengthening exercises, antiinflammatory medication, taping, padding and dry needling. The use of specific footwear and or orthoses to improve foot function may be required to reduce the load on foot and leg structures to improve comfort and help prevent future injury and pain.
Podiatrists are health professionals trained to diagnose and treat lower limb and foot conditions.
