Amateur Anglers give up
Recreational fishing used to be my favourite get-away, but not any more. I simply can’t afford it by the time I pay trailer rego, boat rego, ramp fees, bait costs and petrol. Add to that the proposed licence fee for recreational fishers. Fishing for fun has become too expensive for amateur anglers to cast a line in SA waters. Domenico Sherag, Northern Suburbs
Cost of electricity
In last month’s Northern Living, Stephen McMahon writes that he travelled in France where 70 percent of the country’s energy comes from nuclear power. By contrast in SA, 70 percent of our energy comes from renewable sources and we have the most expensive electricity in the country. We refuse to entertain nuclear energy while the rest of the world ramps up. At the Cop28, countries including the US, France, Canada and Japan pledged to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050 as a way of reaching net zero.
Australians say they care about climate change but they care more about cost of living (cost of electricity) and soon the pressure facing the government will demand that Australia rethink its energy policy.
Schealee Edwards
SA Voice
Despite resounding rejection of an indigenous Voice to parliament in a federal referendum, why is our state going ahead with a SA First Nations Voice to Parliament? At what cost and for what reason? If it’s an advisory committee call it an Advisory Committee. Calling it a VOICE TO PARLIAMENT is a slap in the face to people who voted NO in the referendum. Granting any group special rights to a direct line of communication to government is a racially divisive and alienating move.
Faye Rudgat
Fashion vs Style
Fashion comes from the clothes but STYLE comes from within. TS Fashion Parade. See p5.
Water for a drying climate
Desalination plants and water recycling is a good investment in Australian infrastructure for industry, agriculture and drinking. Other water-scarce countries do it. Saudi Arabia has 7 desal plants along its coastline, Israel has 5 plants that have turned a desert into a productive agricultural oasis. Instead of the Australian states fighting over water rights in the Murray River why not build a desalination plant on the coast and pump fresh water into the Murray River? What a life-saving idea for farmers. New clever technology such as reverse osmosis which uses selfgenerated power, and new sources of renewable energy means that desalination and recycling are becoming a key adaptation to a drying climate worldwide. fashion STYLE on display
Colour makes us feel good. We can go anywhere and look beautiful in our colourful outfits. Christine Jones and Dalene Blackie
Bright colours and soft fabrics were the theme of the Taking Shape fashion parade at Parafield last month. Ladies came from far and wide to see the garments on display. Patrons said that seeing a garment on the rack is one thing, but seeing it on a real-size model brings the garment to life.
I may be a country gal but I love to come to town to buy fashion. Farmers like to look nice too. Carol Walker, Wild Horse Plains
Customers say that it’s easy to overlook clothes on a rack but when you see them in a parade on a model with matching shoes and accessories it ignites your imagination and opens your purse. Model Gracie
It can be hard to find fashion when you are not “the perfect size” so we love TS where there is something for every size and shape. Models Pauline, Crystal and Lea

Sweet Success
In the heart of Salisbury lies a confectionery wonderland unlike any other. Kandy House is nestled within Parabanks Shopping Centre. It is Adelaide's largest lolly shop—a testament to the sweet dreams and entrepreneurial spirit of its owner, Markus Blake.
The Salisbury Community Youth Market is for young local producers and community groups to promote their small businesses, network, explore further opportunities offered by Twelve25 Youth Centre and have fun in a safe and welcoming environment.
WHEN:Thursday 14 March 3pm to 7pm
WHERE: Salisbury Civic Plaza
A chef by trade, local guy Markus honed his culinary skills abroad and interstate before returning to his roots. Back home, he set out to satisfy the local sweet tooth with a unique twist. It all began with a passion for hard-to-find imported candies. Armed with an eye for the exceptional and a taste for the exotic, Markus started small, selling his curated collection at local market stalls. As demand grew, he transitioned to pop-up shops and last year he realised his dream of establishing a permanent retail space.
This will be the second year that the Youth Market has taken place. It is part of the City of Salisbury’s Youth Week celebrations. See calendar on page 6.
“I chose lollies because it’s fun,” Markus explains with a smile. “I wanted to bring joy to people’s lives, to offer them something exciting and different.”
The Youth market offers a variety of market stalls, food and drinks, and the Games 2 U van. Plus henna tattoos, free activities and a 360-photo booth!
And different it is. Kandy House boasts an extensive selection of candies from around the globe, including the bestselling Takis, a popular Mexican snack that has become a local sensation. From nostalgic childhood favourites to exotic delicacies, there’s something to

jewellery, lanyards, diffusers and accessories through her business, Chantra Jewellery & Accessories.
Over the past two years, Nicolette has participated in community markets such as Salisbury Youth Markets, Mawson Christmas Markets and Prospect Summer and Spring Markets. She has also set up pop-up stalls in various shopping centres including Golden Grove Village.
And his commitment to community doesn't end there. In collaboration with the Salisbury Business Association and Centre management, he's spearheading efforts to breathe new life into Parabanks Shopping Centre. Their upcoming Autumn market promises to invigorate the centre and provide a platform for aspiring market stallholders, echoing Markus's own humble beginnings. See ad on back cover. Later this month, the lolly shop will undergo a transformation, doubling in size to include an American-style diner café. Patrons can look forward to indulging in hearty burgers, loaded fries, succulent ribs and decadent desserts.
Nicolette loves social interactions with her customers and meeting the people in her community. She is excited about all aspects of her business and wants to see it grow. For enquiries about the Salisbury Youth Market, please contact Twelve25 Youth Centre on 8406 8555.
One thing is clear – Markus’s sweet success is not just measured by the candies he sells but by the joy, passion, and sense of community he brings to every customer who walks through the doors of Kandy House, Parabanks.

The monthly meetings include a cooked breakfast, B2B networking and a quality speaker. Last month, attendees heard from Tom Ganley, Executive General Manager, Parafield Airport about the airport’s Preliminary Master Plan. He has summarised the key takeaways from his presentation below.
Parafield Airport plays an essential role in the economic prosperity and development of Northern Adelaide and South Australia through employment and value-added production.

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS CURRENTLY UNDERWAY AT THE AIRPORT.
A 130 place Childcare Centre is set to open July 2024. Parafield Service Centre Stage 2 will open south of KFC in August 2024 with outlets including Repco, MyCar, Petbarn, Toymate and Revo Fitness. Men’s Shed are completing their workshop development.
Excitingly the District Outlet Centre wishes to expand from its 50+ outlets and is looking to develop the land North of its existing site.
Parafield Airport Limited is obligated to operate the Airport until 2097 under lease from the Commonwealth Government.
Over the next 20 years aircraft movements are estimated to grow by 2.1% per annum to 342,000. There are a number of challenges to overcome with Electric/Hybrid aircraft types, however these could be 17% of movements in 2031 and are forecast to grow to 69% of movements in 2043.
The 2024 Parafield Airport Preliminary Draft Master Plan is available online at www.parafieldairport.com.au/masterplan

by Gaynor Kouwenhoven, Treasurer, Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club
Are you a fan of displays? How about ships? The City of Salisbury hosts a variety of captivating displays on the ground floor of the Salisbury Community Hub throughout the year. These exhibits offer a fascinating glimpse into a diverse array of subjects.
Currently, the council is showcasing a collection of model boats and ships, courtesy of the Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club. Part of ‘The Foreman Collection,’ these models are on permanent loan to the club.
The first display began on Monday, March 18th, and will run for six weeks. Following its conclusion, a second display will commence for another six weeks.
Spanning from the Tall Sailing Ship era through to modern vessels such as tankers, container ships, tugboats, cruise ships, and ferries, these displays offer a comprehensive journey through maritime history.
Admission to this exhibit is free, and the venue offers indoor comfort with air conditioning. Visitors can also enjoy the convenience of an onsite coffee shop and comfortable seating to relax during their visit.
If you find yourself with a bit of free time, why not stop by the Council and explore what’s on display? Enjoy the experience!
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Salisbury Council and the Foreman Family for their support in making this exhibit possible. Additionally, we would like to thank the Council staff for their invaluable assistance in facilitating the setup of the displayed items. Thank you.

THE EXCITING WORLD OF 3D DENTISTRY
Amongst the new technologies that you may encounter on a visit to the Dentist these days is 3D dentistry.
Two examples of this are 3D restorations where defects in teeth are scanned with a very accurate laser, following which sophisticated software designs and the mills the missing part of your tooth out of a strong ceramic. This is then bonded in, fusing with the tooth to restore your tooth to its original form.
A second and newer 3D technology is the use of 3D x-rays called Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).
Newer CBCT machines can x-ray in 3D down to 50 microns of resolution allowing us more accurate diagnosis of teeth problems, virtual implant treatment planning and mapping and measurement of vital structures allowing safer and more effective treatments.
Dental on Metro have all these technologies onboard including a state of the art CBCT commissioned in 2024.

book review
BY LINDA VINING
The Milliner of Bendigo by Darry Fraser
Strong and independent women is a theme that runs through the many popular novels written by Darry Fraser.
In her latest book Darry paints a picture of Evie Emerson, a maker of beautiful hats who lives in the country town of Bendigo in Victoria. She is 30 years old, unmarried, and just about to have her stunning hats exhibited in the window of a major store in the town. But there is trouble and mystery ahead...
Darry says that although the narrative is set in 1890s, many of the themes are relevant today, and women struggle with the same issues such as having a voice, standing up for themselves, violence against women and looking for hope. “Modern issues come from a long way back and many women are still struggling,” she said. Through careful research and creative imagery
Darry transports the reader to Victoria’s early settlement when transport was by horseback, carts, and river boats. People were striving for an existence in a harsh new land. It is easy to imagine the towering gums on the river bank, the tin and wood dwellings and the dust constantly enveloping everything.
Darry recalls that her great-grandmother was a milliner in colonial times. “Many of the historic details in the book come from my family's tales of life in early Australia - the struggles, the role of women and the crimes of the colonial era such as police corruption, revenge, land-grabbing and murder."
"The satisfying thing about being an author is that I can bring justice to the bad guys in my stories. I can dispose of the crooks in creative fictional ways," laughs Darry at the book launch.
This book would make a perfect present for Mother’s Day coming up on 12 May.
