It has been recently announced that tenants will have the right to own a pet under the new rental reforms proposed by the Government.
This means that landlords cannot unreasonably refuse a tenant’s application to keep a pet in a rental property, on the condition that the tenant agrees to comply with any reasonable conditions imposed by the landlord.
Reasonable conditions include requiring a pet to be kept outside (if the pet is not a type ordinarily kept inside) and requiring carpets to be professionally cleaned at the end of the tenancy if a pet is allowed inside.
In keeping the reform fair for all parties, tenants must still seek permission from the landlord to keep a pet and they are liable for any damages caused by that pet.
Landlords can still refuse to allow a pet if they have a justifiable reason such as the property lacking suitable space or fencing, if keeping the pet does not comply with Council requirements or if the animal presents a public safety risk.

I have noticed in the last couple of editions of Northern Living that there is no letters page. Has this regular content item been removed or are you not receiving letters from the local public? Please let me know the situation as local letters are important to me and, I believe, to the local community. So many issues need highlighting. Frank Costanzo, Salisbury

Every year we would go to the Royal Adelaide Show for a day out, but I have just seen the dramatic hike in entry fees ($39.50 for kids on the weekend). It’s not just getting through the gates. What’s the show without showbags, rides and fun food for the kids? All these have gone up too $$$. With a family of 4 we simply can’t afford to go.

Debate over The Voice has deteriorated into a political football full of bullying, contradictions and pointscoring. I say bring on the referendum ASAP so we can get over this madness. WC Hecker
We can’t thank Northern Living enough for our article and cover story about the Salisbury Art Society SALA exhibition (NL/Aug/181) We are truly humbled and appreciative for including us in your magazine. It certainly was a huge boost in getting the awareness out there of this amazing event, in a way we could never do ourselves without your help.
In Australia we have three levels of governmentNational, State and Local. I do not think it is appropriate for local government to push the agenda of other levels of government. Their job is to manage the local community and environment so I consider it an error of judgement for the Mayor of Salisbury to write to the newspaper saying that the City of Salisbury has resolved to support the Yes vote. This sort of behaviour by other councils has also caused upset. People here are outraged that the Mayor of Salisbury has taken the same path. Keith, pub talk in Salisbury
When I was a school girl we had lessons called ‘Domestic Science’ where we learnt how to run a household and raise children. The lessons stood me in good stead throughout my life even as a career woman. I believe school-aged students should be taught domestic science (by any other name) and learn basic budget cooking and how to raise a family. STEM is all very well but managing a household is an essential and enduring life skill. Ita Bland
Coralie LoftesWonderful idea for Lights of Mawson to use the lakeside for a stunning family-friendly event. I read the promo in Northern Living so we took our three young kids as a special treat. They were thrilled and the giant inflatable sculptures lit up their imagination and generated lots of questions. At home, we’ll talk about this for weeks. Let’s have more free community experiences at Mawson Lakes. Luke and Mazie, Mawson Lakes
The Lights at Mawson event created a great atmosphere that attracted many new faces to my shop. Events like this are very good for business. Bill from Nick’s BBQ
Shannon and Evelyn (2) from Mawson Lakes went to the lights at the zoo but said they liked the Lights at Mawson better because there was no rush, no crowds, it was free and the shops were still open.
Lights at Mawson in July proved very popular with young and old. Families flooded the lakeside and people came from near and far to see the illuminated inflatable sculptures designed by Adelaide textile artist Evelyn Roth who says that art is the most fabulous way to engage the public.
Northern Living was out talking to locals.
After the light show Susan from Modbury called into the yoghurt shop to have dessert and said it was good to see new shops coming to Mawson Lakes.
George and Maria visiting from Sydney loved the kaleidoscope of colourful artwork and suggested that the fountains in Mawson Lakes be lit up too. Not just for the event but every night.
Lorelai (3), Frankie (5) and Spencer (6) from Munno Para spent a wet Saturday indoors so as a treat mum took them to the Lights at Mawson. Mum said the kids love to splash about in puddles so she dressed them in their raincoats and gumboots to brave the weather.
Krina and Honey asked me: “What is a Bilby?” as they looked at the tall inflatable with big pink ears. A passerby quipped: “Makes great chocolate for Easter!"

Titu and Lisa Luthra opened the first Indian restaurant in Salisbury on James Street 23 years ago as a husband and wife team who have since been joined in business by their sons. One of whom was helping by washing dishes at 8 years old!
Mr Luthra was working as a chef at the Italian restaurant next door when he noticed the empty former flower shop that has now housed the Award Winning restaurant for almost a quarter of a century.
Tandoori Temptations won the SA’s Favourite title at the Menulog Awards in 2018. They then went on to become the winner of the Salisbury City Centre Business Awards in 2021 and 2022 for Best Restaurant Award, as voted by their customers. They are also finalists in the 2023 Awards.
The couple are quick to credit their success to both loyal staff and regular customers, who they consider family as well.
Mr Luthra and his wife say they have worked hard to create relationships with their customers.
“We’re always looking to improve on things and keep everybody happy,” he said.
The restaurant has grown famous throughout the region for its northern Indian cuisine with their goat curries becoming very popular alongside favourites butter chicken and chicken tikka masala of course.
“We started our family business to get ahead in life, to support our family and to serve the public fabulous food.”

This is a quality movie for the whole family that takes you to some beautiful places in Vietnam.
Sinh is a free-spirited, handsome tour guide of Vietnamese origin and Amanda is an American travel agent on a mission to buy a new agency in Vietnam. Her company wants to expand into the increasingly popular Vietnam tourist market.
The movie has a slow clichéd beginning but as soon as Amanda arrives in Vietnam the dialogue gets interesting and the storyline evolves with some gentle romance to keep the narrative engaging.
Cute, comedy characters play their part but do not overwhelm. Of particular charm is Sinh's elderly mother who steals the show in a Vietnamese rural village with superb acting, but never speaking a word of English.
Sinh teaches Amanda how to manoeuvre her way across frantic roads in Ho Chi Minh City, how to barter at the market, how to eat Vietnamese food and to participate in traditional customs. She learns to appreciate the beauty of Vietnam's treasures as she enjoys experiences that will change her life. It’s an enlightening ride for Amanda and for Netflix viewers also.
It was September 2001 when a terrorist attack crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City destroying two skyscrapers and taking 3000 lives.
I was recently in lower Manhattan and visited the site of devastation and heartbreak now known as “Ground Zero” and the attack as 9/11. This is what I saw.
Ground Zero used to be a busy financial and business district in Manhattan surrounded by towers full of people at work and supported by an international hotel, a bank, a church and other office buildings. At pedestrian level the underground rail network surfaced, opening into a large green plaza with shady trees, gardens, cafes and benches.
In an instant all this was obliterated. And the world cried in pain and disbelief.
Today, the World Trade Center functions with redeveloped skyscrapers and buildings, but in place of the buildings that were destroyed there is a sacred memorial park and museum. Standing in the footprints of the twin towers are two deep square pools of reflection with water cascading down the sides that represent ‘absence made visible’. People line the edges of the pools, read the names of those who perished and feel the sorrow of a nation. It’s a sombre sight of reflection.
One thing that struck me was an ornamental pear tree in the new plaza called “The Survivor Tree” that bears a traumatic history directly linked to the attack. Most trees on the site were destroyed or buried under rubble, but a badly burnt stump with a green shoot was just visible. The tree was sent to a nursery for tender care, and ten years later it was brought back to the park thriving. Every spring it is a mass of white flowers. The plaque at its base describes the surviving tree as a symbol of Endurance, Hope and Healing.
Ground Zero is a modern sacred place that attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.
Mawson Lakes... what a hive of activity it can be. Walking, jogging or riding round the lake, or maybe fishing, sailing, canoeing or rowing on the lake, your activity options are many... and don’t forget to take the dog out for a walk!
There are several clubs around the lake that can cater for your interests as well as regular group activities so you don’t have to go it alone. Clubs using the lake usually welcome new people and can provide the information you may seek or even allow you to try a particular activity such as radio controlled sailing.
Adelaide lit up during July and so did Mawson Lakes at the Lights at Mawson. If you missed this event, then watch for it next year. Our boats looked spectacular both in and out of the water, together with the static displays around the lake which were also very bright.
The Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club is having another “After Dark Sail” on Friday 29th September starting with a sausage sizzle between 5 – 6pm at the Boat Shed. Locals are welcome to join us.
DARK SAIL
Friday 29th September 2023!
Members will decorate their boats with lots of little lights and when they begin to sail to the promenade, as the sunlight fades and the dark descends, they make a pretty sight. This will be our fourth such sail and each time more boats join our fleet and members try to outshine the other boats by putting more lights than the previous sail!
It is a unique event and is always appreciated by our locals. This may be a good opportunity to take some great photos or perhaps become involved in this enjoyable pastime and maybe sail your own boat next April.
So don’t sit at home, come out and enjoy what Mawson Lakes has to offer. In addition to all of the lakeside activities, there are a variety of great coffee shops, cafes and restaurants to explore. Be part of your community and enjoy!
