Becky

Frey cover story By Dave Danielson Photos by URSPECIALS

There’s no doubt that you’ve heard people described as those who work hard and play hard — those who go fullsteam ahead and get the most out of all situations in life. Becky Frey is one of those people. Principal of Becky Frey Real Estate with Compass, she’s the perfect example of what it means to be an allout achiever.

All-Out Achiever

“I always remember having a job and always doing something, whether it was working in Dad’s hardware store, in a restaurant or as a lifeguard,” she remembers. “I always liked having my own money. It made me feel empowered, so I wouldn’t need to rely on anyone else.” As she came of age, Becky moved to Dallas and attended college at SMU. While finishing her education, she was working in retail. In the process, she was continuing to hone her service and sales skills. New Opportunities One day while she was working in the store, a real estate agent stopped by the establishment to return some merchandise. By the time the agent was ready to leave, Becky helped her find a new round of purchases that had equaled the first batch of returns. The agent was impressed. With a smile, she encouraged Becky to consider a career in real estate. So, Becky followed up with the agent’s broker — Ellen Terry Realtors. The conversation went well, much like Becky’s ensuing career that has spanned 35 years. “Back then, when you started, you had to be an assistant for nine months to a year,” Becky explains. Yet, it was full-steam ahead. Becky did what she could to get up to speed quickly.

Active Upbringing Growing up in Arkansas, Becky was going places in life. And, as her active personality proved, she was going to get there quickly. She, like her father, was involved in many active endeavors. “My dad owned a True Value hardware store when I was young,” she recalls. “He had also coached football and been quite the athlete in his younger days. We were always doing things together. He taught me how to fish and golf, and we did that a lot together.”

20 • August 2019

As Becky grew, she was involved in a wide range of sports. “I have always played a lot of sports. They just fit my personality of being very driven and goal-oriented,” Becky says. “I was a big golfer for years, I played tennis, I was also a runner and competed in marathons. It was all about making a plan, working the plan and having success.” She had an active mind for business, as well.

“I stayed late and read through old files to learn about contracts,” she says. “And then, to make extra money, I put together listing presentations for other agents. I went out with a Polaroid camera and took pictures of houses. Then, I made these navy blue frames for the pictures and glued them on the front pages of the presentations. It was a fun thing, and other agents would pay me to do this for them.” Passion for People Through the years, Becky has stayed engaged and extremely active. One of her favorite parts has been holding open houses. In fact, she still enjoys hosting them today. Through time, many people have found their way home with Becky’s assistance. In fact, she is one of the most prolific professionals in her field — recording over $100 million in annual volume and more than 100 transactions during each of the past

five years. In turn, she was recently ranked among the nation’s top-producing real estate agents at number 91 on the list. Team Triumphs Becky feels strong gratitude and appreciation for her team of six people, who join her in serving clients each day. In the same way that she has planned her success through the years, Becky carefully plans and selects her team. “Hiring the right people is key, obviously. We use the DISC model to bring on the set of personality traits that work for our group. I also think the best hires have happened when I reach out to friends and receive personal introductions. We’ve had several examples of how everything just works out well that way.” Becky is also a proponent of vision boards. In fact, her first broker, Ellen Terry, used an early version, which involved cutting out pictures of things that she was working toward and putting them on her desk in front of her to serve as a daily reminder. “I’m a big believer in making dream boards,” she says. “I’m a visualizer, and I encourage those on my team to visualize what they want personally, professionally, and with their families.” One of Becky’s team members is her son, Hunter. “I remember when he told me he wanted to enter real estate and join the team. He is a big fisherman and really enjoys the water. So I told him, ‘If you do what you love, success will follow,’” Becky explains. “Now, as a member of my team, he focuses on lake houses. It’s lucky when you discover what you really have a passion for and then experience success. It makes everyday fun.”

Lasting Results Becky’s definition of success for herself goes beyond the lofty numbers she achieves. “If I come home and I feel I’ve done my best, then I feel good. I always want my clients to be happy. I think it’s feeling good about what you’ve done that day,” Becky says. “Each morning, I have quiet time, I look at positive things, I journal, and I also go and work out every day. It clears my head and puts me on the right path for the day.”

In her spare time, Becky enjoys playing with her dogs, fly fishing, excursions off the beaten path, golf, mountain biking and hiking. “My motto has always been ‘work hard and play hard.’ And people know that about me.” They also know the positive impact she has each day on those around her as an all-out achiever.

Others in the community benefit from Becky’s efforts to give back. Her favorite organizations to support are the growing and popular Katy Trail, as well as The Family Place, in Dallas.

rising star By Dave Danielson Photos by Courtney Carter Photography

We all have our own paths through life. In the process, there are challenges and opportunities that help us take new, unexpected steps ahead. That’s the way it’s been for Logan Nichols, a REALTOR® and Managing Partner with Standard Real Estate. After just a few years in the industry, he has earned a place among the area’s Rising Stars. Along the way, Logan’s career —and success — have been powered by his love of people and his knack for building lasting relationships. E XC E L L IN G TH RO UGH EX PERI EN C E Growing up on a small farm near Tyler, Texas, Logan had supportive parents who nurtured his relationships with those around him and pushed him to always achieve more.

“I raised horses and goats, was involved in 4-H, and loved showing livestock,” he recalls. “I loved everything about agriculture and animals. Growing up, I always thought I was going to be a veterinarian.” With that in mind, Logan attended Texas A&M, but he soon had a change of plans. “Taking chemistry for the first time, I realized I was not going to be a veterinarian,” he laughs. For a time, Logan considered being a lawyer, but, eventually, his interests led to degrees in agriculture and economics, with an emphasis on economic analysis that would end up shaping his real estate career. After Texas A&M, Logan’s first job was as a commodity trader with Imperial Sugar Company. However, due to bankruptcy, Logan’s position was eliminated. “I remember thinking the world was ending. But, in hindsight, it was actually the best thing that ever happened,” Logan says. “What I remembered was that every job I’ve ever had came through a relationship, and this was no different. When I didn’t know what to do, I reached out to those around me for guidance, and that opened the next door.” Logan called the Dean’s Office at Texas A&M, leveraging the relationships he had built. Through those previously established relationships, the connection was made, and the next step of Logan’s career began. “It was wonderful because, as one door closed, another door opened,” he says. “That was when I realized that, just because one door closes, don’t always expect another to open. Sometimes,

it is a window, or another opportunity you never saw coming. And I did not expect what was next.” Shortly thereafter, he found himself in Washington, D.C., working on process improvements and training initiatives with representatives around the country as a consultant at the United States Postal Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Department of Defense. In his role as a chief of staff at the Department of Defense, Logan managed multi-million dollar budgets and worked with a broad array of clients, which prepared him for his next steps. T HE PAT H HO ME After six years, Logan felt a pull to return to Texas, and his path had prepared the way for his next steps. “I had invested in real estate here,” Logan says. “Thinking about my skill set and what I wanted to do, my passion was people, and I knew my skill set aligned with real estate. Real estate is about relationships and guiding clients through one of the biggest decisions they’ll ever make.” His decision to enter real estate wasn’t without challenge. When he moved to Dallas, Logan didn’t know many people at all. But, for the man with a knack for connecting with others and building relationships, it wouldn’t stay that way long. “Relationships are everything, and, because of that, I was able to meet some really great people, who were very helpful in helping me make that transition,” Logan says. “I met people through networking and building friendships, but one fun way I built those relationships was through joining a kickball league when I moved to Dallas. The very first house I sold was to somebody that I played kickball with.” Remarkably, within his first year, Logan recorded an impressive $4.5 million in real estate volume. In the process, Logan met Zach De Zernardi, the man who would become his business partner. Today, the two lead an organization, The Standard Real Estate, and more than 40 agents. “Zach and I just hit it off as business partners. We both see things very differently, but we both value and respect each other’s opinions,” he says. “Zach never fails to challenge me, and he knows I will always challenge him, but what makes us a good team is we never settle. We know that, when we make a decision, we have 24 • August 2019

done our best to consider each other’s opinions. We know that we have made the best decisions for those we lead.” B U I LD I NG ON STR ONG B ON D S Logan measures his success through the help he provides and the relationships that come from those with whom he works. As Logan says, “My passion is serving others. The most important thing for someone is to find a place to call home, and it means a lot to me to help make that a reality.” His efforts on behalf of others continue to drive his success and ability to help others. “Over 90% of my clients are friendships and former relationships. Many people don’t want to do business with friends, but I’m proud of that because that has driven my success — having those relationships and friendships where they want to work with you because they see your work ethic in everything you do,” he smiles. “My life and my work are intertwined. When you love what you do, it’s part of who you are.”

Joe

Atkins A New Generation of Results

www.realproducersmag.com • 29

During this month’s broker spotlight, we honor the leadership of Joe Atkins, who heads Joe Atkins Realty and continues the tradition of excellence his late father, Joe, began midway through the last century. In the process, Joe Atkins represents more than just the next generation of real estate in his family. He’s leading a new generation of results in real estate. His Own Path Joe took his own path to real estate. “Growing up, I had no clue what I was going to do. Even though I grew up in a real estate household, and Dad was a broker, I had zero interest in doing real estate,” Joe recalls. “I saw myself in an outside sales role.” Starting out after college, Joe began as a bank loan officer. From there, he worked in sales roles in the hospitality industry, closing equipment sales and representing restaurants and bars. After achieving his own, individual brand of success, Joe was ready to buy his first home.

broker spotlight By Dave Danielson Photos by URSPECIALS

When it comes to real estate leadership in Dallas, “Joe Atkins” has been a household name for decades. 30 • August 2019

“It was 2005, and I was buying my first condo. My dad represented me as my broker. In turn, my dad walked me through everything, step by step. I got to see it more in-depth than a typical buyer,” Joe remembers. “I really enjoyed the process. That spurred me into pursuing a career in real estate.” A Father’s Support and Advice Within a year, Joe had completed his classes and earned his license. At that point, he shared the news of his new career path with his father. As Joe recalls, “Most people think I went in and worked with my dad, but that wasn’t the case. I told Dad I got

my license, and then I asked him, ‘Now what?’ He said, ‘You need to go and talk with some different brokers and figure out the best fit for you.’” In that moment, Joe’s father helped his son by giving him the tools to grow his own way. “He didn’t say, ‘You need to come work for me. You need to find the best fit for you,’” Joe remembers. “At the same time, Dad let me know he was there for me as a resource whenever I needed his help.”

Joe’s ultimate satisfaction comes from mentoring his team members, helping his clients, and giving back to his community. He has served for 12 years as a Big Brother and is on the board of directors for the African American Museum of Dallas. Since the beginning, family has been a sustaining force for Joe. His father and mother passed away in 2015. “My mom, Marjorie, was always my biggest cheerleader. Both Mom and Dad were fully supportive,” Joe smiles.

After talking with a handful of brokers, Joe found a great fit with Global Realty in 2007. Joe’s dad suggested that his son get involved in the industry, meet people, and look for opportunities to grow. Joe definitely did, serving as one of the founding members and Chair of the Young Professional Network. He also graduated from the MetroTex Leadership Academy and served on the MetroTex Association of REALTORS®, Texas Association of REALTORS®, and National Association of REALTORS® Board of Directors.

Today, Joe enjoys the support of his wife, Charity, and his children, three-year-old Donovan and 8-monthold Cameron.

I really enjoyed the process. That spurred me into pursuing a career in real estate.

Leading the Way After earning a spot as the top producer at Global Realty, Joe began his own brokerage in 2013. By 2015, Joe Atkins Realty grew to 18 agents, and, by 2016, the firm added a second location. Today, Joe Atkins Realty has two offices, with locations in Bishop Arts and Frisco. Joe has continued his own personal real estate efforts. Last year, he recorded over $20 million in personal volume.

“Charity has always been fully supportive of me, with the long days, crazy work schedule, and needing to walk out of dinner to take calls while on family vacation. The spouse of a realtor is a tough job. They have to be very understanding.”

As Joe looks to the future, he remembers the foundation his father set and treasures the original real estate license document his father earned as a college student in 1956. “My dad was well respected. And it’s neat that agents tell me how he took time to help them,” Joe smiles. “The fact that my dad never pressured me and the fact that I’m able to carry on my dad’s namesake as our brokerage means a lot to me.”

GUARDIAN

MORTGAG WINNING WITH WADE If you could come up with a wish list of the qualities you would want in a mortgage lender, chief among them would probably be the power of a large lender combined with individualized care from a person you can trust. That combination exists in Guardian Mortgage, which is a division of Sunflower Bank, N.A. This successful, far-reaching organization is headquartered in Plano, provides the dedicated care of a service-focused branch, and is led by industry veteran Wade Betz.

32 • August 2019

Delivering a Difference Guardian Mortgage was founded in 1965, and Wade joined the team in 2006. He opened his own branch three years ago in the Mockingbird Station area. In 13 years, Wade has proudly served more than 2,500 families with their mortgage needs and surpassed the half-billion-dollar career mark in mortgage volume earlier this year. The figures tell a story of personalized attention.

“We pride ourselves on servicing our loans for the life of the loan. So, after closing, the relationship stays with us,” Wade explains. “So, I like to say that we’re your point of contact from the initial conversation until your loan pays off.” In an age of discount lenders and electronic options, Wade explains that Guardian Mortgage is there at the beginning, the end, and all inbetween points. As Wade emphasizes, “I’m the one who will be conducting the annual mortgage review with the client. I see it as my job to essentially help them professionally manage the largest debt they have and to

GE follow up to make sure that it’s still working how they originally intended, so they stay on track with their goals.” Personal Focus As Wade says, that personal level of service is becoming more difficult to find. “By servicing our own loans, we offer some huge advantages for clients and partners,” he explains. “So, it allows us to do things that other lenders can’t because, the second that most lenders close a loan, the servicing rights are sold off.”

Wade conducts annual mortgage review calls every week as part of his relentless service ethic. “It’s important to stay connected because circumstances change. Maybe the client went through financial issues and needs to lower the payment. Maybe they fell short of their college savings goals and need to access equity in their home. Maybe they’re going through a divorce. And as a Certified Mortgage Planning Specialist (CMPS), I can help with that,” Wade points out. “There are tax implications associated with those types of decisions that they need to understand. All that matters.” Communication happens early and often.

www.realproducersmag.com • 33

“I am surrounded by an amazing team that helps me take great care of our clients and partners. Our main goal is to deliver WOW service to everyone we encounter. I personally handle all initial consultations with my clients while my team and I work to quickly and accurately pre-approve them,” Wade says. “And, then, once they are pre-approved, I regularly connect with them, typically on Wednesdays, so that, if there are any changes, we’re on top of it. And, we communicate the status to our real estate agent partners so that we’re all on the same page,” Wade explains. “My promises to my real estate partners and clients are: I promise to close on time, I promise to close accurately, and I promise to close with lots of communication. Once under contract, not only do you get automated updates along the way, but we reach out by phone to all parties of the transaction each Tuesday just to make sure we are all on the same page. us for an update as we are constantly communicating with you.” Positive Impact In addition to helping clients reach their mortgage goals, Wade also gives back to his community. One of his primary efforts is as an instructor for the Military Mortgage Boot Camp program. “The mission is to educate the real estate community about the benefits of the VA home loan and how they can help serve the veteran community at a higher level. I like to dispel the myths about the program. It has an unfounded less-than-ideal reputation.” Wade also is on the board of Carry the Load, a charity for veterans that raises awareness about the true meaning of Memorial Day to honor fallen heroes, including veterans and first responders. He specifically is involved with the Storyboard committee, which is responsible for interacting with the families of fallen heroes to share their stories.

At home, Wade is surrounded by the support of his own family, including his wife, Becca; ten-year-old son, Bryce; and eight-yearold son, Drake. “I just couldn’t do what I do without them,” he smiles. And what he and his Guardian Mortgage team do, with integrity and service, makes a lasting impact. “I like to say to clients that I’m like your airline pilot. I’m going to take great care of you,” he smiles. “I can’t promise we won’t hit a little turbulence along the way. But I’ve done this enough that, if you follow my in-flight instructions, I will land you safely. And you’ll be a happy homeowner for years to come.” For more information Call Wade Betz at 469-906-2522 Email: TheBetzTeam@gmc-inc.com www.WinningWithWade.com

DALLAS REAL PRODUCERS

FAQs

What is the primary purpose of Real Producers?

Is there a cost to me, the REALTOR®?

Our primary mission is to UNITE the top REALTORS® in the local community by helping you connect with other top producing agents on a deeper level. We accomplish this through our monthly publication and our quarterly parties and events.

No cost to you. Our entire platform is FREE for you! All of our costs are covered by our approved business partners. They have all been recommended by one of the top 500 REALTORS® in the community, so you should feel comfortable using them as well.

Who is the magazine distributed to? ONLY the TOP 500 producing REALTORS® south of 635 will be receiving our monthly publication. The top 500 varies each year based on MLS production, so there are no guarantees you make the top 500 next year. Keep working hard! Where do we get the top 500 from? The TOP 500 comes directly from real MLS data. The Dallas Real Producers community includes the top 500 REALTORS® south of 635 in Dallas county, along with Rockwall, Irving, Grand Prairie, Mesquite, Duncanville, Waxahachie, etc. **We also have a North DFW Real Producers community and magazine for the top 500 REALTORS® NORTH of 635. You are welcome to come to their parties and events as well (as long as you promise to be fun). How will you be receiving the magazine every month? We will be shipping your copy of the magazine to your office with your name on the back, so keep your eyes open for it every month! We will send out a monthly email with the digital version of it as well. **If you would like it shipped to your house instead of the office, please email Brett@DallasRP.com with your home address.
