By Dave Scott Getting over to Simcoe Composite School (SCS) last Sunday night was a hard thing to do… I mean the weather was beautiful… I had spent most of the day outside with my family and the last thing I thought that I wanted to do, was go inside… but a funny thing happened as I drew closer to the music room at SCS… I could hear the chorus of voices singing away and the band leading the group… I kinda’ got a little excited to see and hear the music… I quietly slipped into the room and watched as Bob Nightingale conducted over his musical mates. I grabbed my camera and began taking photos… the smiles were all over the group as they sang together enjoying the moment. I was impressed with the camaraderie… you got the sense that they all realized the importance of making the 61st Simcoe Lions Show the best it can be! The theme for this year’s show is Norfolk’s Perfect Music Mix… and the array of music spans from… You Belong with Me (Libby Adams Solo), to 1234 (Claire Senko Solo), to Hey Soul Sister, to Save the Last Dance for Me… let’s not forget that there will also be some spiritual numbers… this is just a small sample of the music you will be hearing. The Lions have been hard at work since January, bringing their own unique sound to these songs… and Bob Nightingale leading the chorus of the 61st Simcoe Lions Show, Norfolk’s Perfect Music Mix. they sound great! etter to the Editor

After 39 years as a veterinarian, I announce that as of March 31, 2012, I will retire from my regular veterinary work at the Colborne Veterinary Clinic. I cannot express adequately, my sincere gratitude to the staff, my former and current clients and patients, for your trust in me and in what I was trying to accomplish. It has been my pleasure to “be there for you. The most thanks, although, is to my wife, Judy and my family, for their complete understanding and acceptance of my time and efforts given to the profession. I could not have succeeded without them. I wish Dr. Paul Arora much success as the owner of the practice, and hope that his clients continue to receive the same level of care as has been given in the past. I plan to giveback to the community as I have and can enjoy our five grandchildren even more. There may be the odd game of golf in there somewhere. Sincerely, David G. Horton

ave you noticed that your toenails have changed colour, become thickened, brittle or are crumbling and splitting? These are signs that you may have a fungal nail infection. When your toenails become thickened and change shape, it can cause pain while wearing shoes and other problems such as ingrown nails and difficulty cutting your nails. What causes a fungal nail infection? Fungus is found in the environment similar to mold and mildew, and does not need sunlight to grow. Trauma to the nail can give the fungus a route of entry and a warm, moist and dark environment such as your shoes call allow it to spread. It is difficult to avoid contact with fungus but try to avoid “barefoot areas such as gyms, locker rooms, swimming pools and spas. Other risk factors that increase the chance of developing a fungal infection are having conditions such as diabetes, poor circulation or concurrent athlete’s foot infections. If you have a fungal infection, there are different treatment options. Oral, topical and surgical remedies are available. Oral medications have the greatest success rate however not everyone can take them. Topical medications are available in prescription and overthe-counter varieties and are usually painted on like nail polish. Surgical removal of the infected nail may also be an optional treatment plan. Whichever treatment you and your Chiropodist choose, professional foot care to thin out the nails assists in the treatment and prevention of fungus. There are things you can do to help prevent a fungal nail infection from occurring. Wash your feet daily and dry well between the toes. Wear clean socks and change them daily. Use an antifungal spray or powder in your shoes. Choose footwear that is not constricting and made of a breathable material. Keep nails trimmed straight across. Avoid going barefoot in public. See a Chiropodist if you have any questions about the health of your nails!

S Walk Time is Just A round the Corner

By Dave Scott Every April we all head up to Holy Trinity for a walk… not just any walk, the MS Walk… oh there will be teams decked out in their colours, there will a delicious BBQ, of course Gerry will be there from CD98.9 along with Randy Halmo from Classy FM Professional Music Mix DJ Service… cameras will be flashing for team photos, folks will be stretching while they reconnect with friends they have not seen in awhile. Volunteers will be collecting the pledge sheets, roughly 240 people of all ages will head outside to begin their walk… maybe they have MS themselves and this walk is personal… perhaps it’s the 12

year old walking for their mom or dad… maybe it is just a friend who knows someone with MS… they are all there to help… to raise funds that may help someone right here at home… the funds might help with a wheelchair, walker, or bathroom accessories, maybe the funds will be that donation that finds the cure… who knows, but come April 22nd if we all just do our part… maybe just maybe, someday, MS WILL HAVE A CURE. If you would like to get involved you can register online at www.mswalks.ca or contact Jessica at 1-888-510-7777 x3207 or email her at Jessica.whitehead@ mssociety.ca.

* Cleat exchange also available, all donations are greatly accepted and 100% of proceeds go directly into our 2012 Bursary program * Rep team try outs are under way. By Dave Scott For the Canadian Cancer Society, April is about Daffodil Days‌ it is the tradition here in Norfolk that the Annual Daffodil Brunch will take place on April 15th, from 8am till 2pm at Camp Trillium‌ the event is always a huge success‌ with the breakfast, silent auction, and draw for a Vic Gibbons painting‌ and entertainment as well. This year, I sat down with Laurie Ball, Fundraising Coordinator for the Brant-Norfolk Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society and well, we talked not just about cancer but many of the different aspects of living life with and without cancer.

Laurie is a Norfolk girl, born and raised. She talks of life in Norfolk with great pride‌ her family farm, school, raising a family here, her hopes and dreams‌ and her job. The job she was meant to do‌ Looking back on her life now‌ you see what brought her to the Canadian Cancer Society‌ Laurie’s story goes a little like this‌ she attended the University of Waterloo and then George Brown College where she studied in the field of gerontology‌ life was good. She and her boyfriend, Jeff, were looking to build a life together‌ but at 26 years old, all of that changed, Laurie was diagnosed

long-time LFT stage manager Daniele Guillaume. The play tells the story of Mel Saunders, a recently hired cook at a far north camp who has to juggle her new responsibilities while coping with a supporting cast of quirky, challenging characters. On Thursday, March 22, the festival moves to the Terrace Room at the Erie Beach Hotel for a reading of Rum Runners, a new comedy/musical written by Lighthouse Theatre Artistic Director Derek Ritschel and composer Steve Thomas. The play is based on the prohibition-era Lake Erie bootlegging trade that made a significant impact on Port Dover and the surrounding area. The reading will also include the first public performances of the play’s original songs in advance of the Rum Runners world premiere at LFT this August. By MARG WERDEN Ticks and mosquitoes Although I’ve been bitten by mosquitoes in winter a few times in my life, I’ve usually had to spend copious amounts of money and travel many miles for the privilege. This year, for the first time that I can remember, I was attacked by a horde of mosquitoes in the winter right here in Norfolk! This happened last week, and although the weather is definitely not winterlike, the calendar says it is still officially winter until March 20. And to top it off, later that same day, I found a tick crawling on my arm! What is Mother Nature up to this year?

St. Williams Conservation Reserve While once covered in forest, much of south-western Ontario was cleared by Europeans to make way for agriculture. Slowly, however, over the past century some of these forests have been allowed to regenerate and one of the largest blocks of forest in the Carolinian life zone of south-western Ontario is located in Norfolk County within the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve. The St. Williams Conservation Reserve, with a total of 1,034 hectares (2,555 acres), consists of two tracts of land: White Forest (formerly known as the Turkey Point Tract) and Zavitz Forest (formerly the Nursery Tract), named in recognition of the key roles played by Dr. James H. White and Dr. Edmund J. Zavitz in reforesting these lands a century ago. The Zavitz Forest was the site of Canada’s first forestry station, established in 1908, to convert blow sands back into woodlots and to grow and ship seedlings all over south-western Ontario. In 2004, these tracts were officially designated as a provincial Conservation Reserve and are recognized regionally, provincially and nationally for their exceptional biodiversity and natural heritage values. The St. Williams Conservation Reserve is centred in the middle of the Carolinian Life Zone, which makes up only 1% of Canada’s total land area but boasts a greater number of both flora and fauna species than any other ecosystem in Canada. It is also the province’s most threatened ecological region. Over 125 species at risk live in the Carolinian Life Zone and another 400 are considered either provincially and/or globally “rare”. The diverse habitats found in the St. Williams Conservation Reserve support significant populations of these rare and endangered plants and animals such as Eastern Flowering

Dogwood, Hooded Warbler, and Eastern Hog-nosed Snake. “We arguably have among the highest number of species at risk in all of Canada,” said Mark Sommerville, Past-Chair of the St. Williams Conservation Reserve Community Council. “Our challenge is to balance the recreational needs of our community with the conservation and restoration of important native habitat.” The St. Williams Conservation Reserve Community Council is a volunteer group that plays a lead role in ensuring that community values are represented during the management planning process. Since 2009, the Council has raised more than $230,000 to manage the Reserve and to protect the habitat for the many species at risk found there. Some of the projects carried out by the St. Williams Conservation Reserve Community Council include: conducting surveys of the flora and fauna found within the reserve; planning and implementing vegetation management projects to restore native oak savannah and Carolinian forest habitats; establishing a network of trails designed to be used by a variety of users without damaging the environment; developing a website (http://www.swcr.ca), educational brochures, and interpretive kiosks; and organizing work days and an annual open house. As with many volunteer organizations, additional help is always welcome. Volunteers are needed to monitor trail conditions, help with community work days, and serve on the board of directors. Members of the community with an interest in joining the St. Williams Conservation Reserve Community Council or volunteering in another capacity can contact the Community Council by email at info@swcr.ca. The public is encouraged to discover the Conservation Reserve by exploring the extensive trail system in all seasons. Trail maps are available on the website. When using the trails, if any species at risk are spotted, the public is asked to report the sighting using a form available on the website.

ommunity theatre group presents ‘Senior Moments’ improv show

A local group of amateur actors is taking an innovative approach to sharing what being a “mature adult” means to them. Led by professional director and educator Vinetta Strombergs of Normandale, the team of seven performers has worked together to assemble a series of short improv skits that share their points of view on aging, being elderly members of a community, and how common perceptions of older adults affect them. The skits range in subject matter, and include both humorous and more serious perspectives. Senior Moments is part of the ongoing Looking Ahead: Aging with a Developmental Disability campaign overseen by the Haldimand & Norfolk Seniors Partnership (HNSP), an amalgam of local agencies that work together to provide services and supports to adults who have a developmental disability and their families. Aging affects these individuals much differently than people who do not have a disability, and reaching out to families affected by these issues is a priority for all the partnership’s member organizations. The cast includes seven participants with varying degrees of experience. Some have performed in local community productions, and some came out to audition just for fun without realizing that everyone would be accepted. The group

has met as many as three times a week since January learning improv techniques, memory exercises, character development, and movement. They’ve also had homework assignments that have challenged them to reflect on their experiences and what they want to achieve by participating. Port Dover residents Doug and Marilyn joined the production for the experience of doing something memorable together. “I started acting in high school, but I’ve never been in anything like this before,” Doug shared. “Now I can add improv to my CV.” Elaine from Turkey Point said that participating in Senior Moments has helped her be more “in the moment. Having no script keeps us thinking; it’s never boring.” Strombergs is impressed with the progress her troupe has made in such a short time. “We’ve only been together since January, and they’ve come so far,” she stated. “It’s still a work in progress, but we’re going to have a great show ready by the end of rehearsals.” Performances of Senior Moments are scheduled for 3:00pm on Sunday, March 25 at Lighthouse Festival Theatre and 7:00pm on Tuesday, March 27 at the Hagersville Community Centre. There is no set admission to either show, although a donation to the HNSP is appreciated.

with ovarian cancer… she thinks back, and remembers going to the Canadian Cancer Society website to educate herself as much as possible about her cancer and the treatment involved. There were tough days but Jeff and her family were her rock… she let the emotions out, focused her energy on getting her strength back, tried to keep busy to keep the negative thoughts at bay. All of this while having… four sessions of treatment, which included three days of chemotherapy, followed by two weeks of recovery, only to start over… the two weeks she would spend at home on the family farm and the three days of treatment would be spent at Jeff’s mom’s home in the city. Everyone in the family was there for her… she knew she could beat the disease… but would she ever be able to be a mom… to have children of her own? Finally the treatments were drawing to a close. Jeff had always been there for her… their relationship was solid… having faced more diversity than any young couple should have to. Jeff asked Laurie’s dad if he could take his daughter’s hand in marriage… then with Laurie just finishing up her last treatment… bald, weak and tired from all the chemo, a shell of herself… Jeff and Laurie took a stroll on the family farm and under a tree that the two had planted, Jeff asked her to marry him… he had no doubts… his love was true! The answer was yes… Laurie’s life started to come back to her and the couple got on with their lives… soon Maddilyn was born and things settled in. That was of course, until round two occurred… cancer struck again… this time, in one of her kidneys. Laurie had played this game before and knew all too well the importance of getting at the cancer fast. The kidney was removed and … another recovery began. She thinks back, ‘One kidney, one ovary… and we still were able to have another child!’ Their second daughter, Emma was born. Her girls are her pots of gold… she cherishes them beyond belief

and fully understands how lucky she is. Since day one of her battle against cancer, Laurie has become involved in someway or another in the fight against cancer… it started with the Relay for Life, back in Tillsonburg. Laurie remembers that first one vividly, when all her family came out in support. A few years later a relay was set up in Norfolk and Laurie jumped in to help out. She found herself volunteering where she could to help the Canadian Cancer Society… she soon realized that her passion lay with helping others battle cancer… she knew somehow, somewhere, she would work helping others. Last year that dream became a reality when Laurie was hired to be the Fundraising Coordinator for BrantNorfolk Canadian Cancer Society. Today as Laurie sits before me… I see a women determined to make a difference in the fight against Cancer. You can see the hope in her eyes. She speaks firmly in what she believes. She has felt, seen, and lived through what cancer can do… and came out the other side… she has passion for events such as the Daffodil Brunch and the Relay For Life, she understands the importance. She sees the volunteers who have worked to make the Brunch such a huge success… many having their own or a family cancer story… These days, over 60% of the folks diagnosed with cancer will survive… at the Relay For Life the event is always a powerful, emotional walk for her and her family. The survivor victory lap reminds her that the fight can be won. For Laurie, she has won her battle… but the war marches on and others will need her help… and she will be there… for a shoulder to cry on, to advise, to fundraise, to do whatever it takes to help others. Laurie reminded me that the passion to help others is within all of us. She embraces life and understands that she needs to get every ounce out of life that she can. The Canadian Cancer Society should consider themselves lucky

to have Laurie on their side. Stop and think for a moment… she was diagnosed at 26 years old, a young woman whose life was just getting started… it would have been easy to give up and say, ‘Woe is me.’ But no, with her family’s support, her drive, she survived and came back stronger than ever. Now I know, this story was to be more about the Daffodil Brunch but sometimes, you have to look beyond the charity and the event to understand the importance of why we should

support the event… well I just gave you one more reason to go to the Brunch at Camp Trillium on April 15th! And while you are thinking about helping out the cause, call the office at 519-753-2566 and see how you can volunteer to make a difference in the fight against cancer. As little as 3 hours can make a huge difference to a person living with cancer. Many volunteer opportunities are available right here in Norfolk.
