like a three-hour musical rock 'n' roll sermon!

I was blown away and vowed to see Bruce again… two kids later, my wife and I saw E Street and the Boss at the ACC (now Scotiabank Place), and this time we had floors. Again the energy and excitement were all-encompassing! So guess who Randy and I are talking about at this month's Boomer Music experience? Randy wants to start off by thanking all of his clients from over the years for their support! He looks forward to stepping up to the mic and life returning to (somewhat) normal. Randy hopes to see you soon!

Wellness at Upper By: Dave Scott As a society today, we are wading into unknown waters. More than ever before, our mental health and physical well-being have been stretched to the point of exhaustion. Folks are in search of help to establish their own identity and step positively into the future. We are no longer a society based on "take this pill" to fix all ills. Instead, we are looking inward for the answers. The problem is who will help with the proper direction.

I recently spent an afternoon hanging out with all the wonderful ladies who have come together to form Upper 23 Wellness in Port Dover. These four dynamic wellness businesses are ready to help! This coming of age facility in Port Dover was the brainchild of Janet and Gary Hepburn, who recognised the need for a wellness centre that could help folks with their struggles. Gary and Janet are thrilled that each of these health care professionals will help to bring a larger wellness picture to the local community. I appreciate that each business took the time to chat with me, and I have to tell you that I left there a better person after sitting and talking with each of these individuals.

All of them shared a passion for their clients, and it wasn't just talk. I have been doing interviews for a long time, and it was just awesome to see and hear about their experiences in their given fields, feel the energy of the building, and be surrounded by such caring and compassionate folks.

Collective Movement Osteopathy Sarah Hindmarsh began her journey to becoming an osteopath through instructing yoga. She was always intrigued by the movement capabilities of students which created many questions about the human body. A hip injury caused her to seek treatment from an osteopath to whom she asked many of her questions. After a few visits and discussions, the Osteopath suggested she study osteopathy!

Psychologist

Dr. Linda Wiebe

In 2011, her osteopathic education began. Through the last decade, Sarah has worked in London, Cambridge and finally landed in Simcoe to practice in 2016. When Sarah chatted with the Hepburns last year about Upper 23 Wellness, she made the decision to move her business to Port Dover and become the first osteopath in Dover! Sarah is familiar with the beautiful space, and believes all the businesses complement each other. Helping children hits close to home for this mom of two. Understanding and helping a young one is immediate and rewarding because it gives the child relief, which reduces stress for the parents, and in turn the family's stress levels. Helping anyone have a better quality of life is Sarah's focus Dr. Wiebe has been helping folks for just over 27 years and has had her own practice for the last ten or so. When I sat down with her in her warm, welcoming office at Upper 23 Wellness, I felt relaxed. Her calm, soft voice set a tone that made it easy to chat and enjoy a conversation. Dr. Wiebe explained, "Psychologists in Ontario are regulated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. They assess, diagnose and treat psychological, emotional, behavioural and psychiatric disorders." Dr. Wiebe believes one of her strengths as a psychologist is the need to understand yourself first! She took part in therapy herself, which was an excellent experience and provided insight for helping folks. After school, she worked at Sprucedale in Simcoe while finishing her doctorate. The experience she explains was life-changing. "I am a person; you are a person." So working together to build trust was a critical aspect of helping the youths in that environment. Just over ten years ago, Dr. Wiebe started her own practice, working at Mike Fidler & Associates in Simcoe. She explains that the human connection is essential and that building a long

Sarah Hindmarsh term relationship with her clients over time is key. She is passionate about hearing what folks have to say and helping them through tough times and strives to help them feel understood and know that she is with them on their journey. Dr. Wiebe works with adolescents and adults. She treats clinical disorders such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, traumatic grief, and more. Dr. Wiebe loves her new office at Upper 23 Wellness and is looking forward to working with all the other health providers on the floor as well. For information about booking an appointment, contact her assistant, Sandra, at (647) 4718074 or admin@drlindawiebe.com.

23 Market Läka ~ A step towards wellness When you walk into the Läka office of Alexandra and Samantha at Upper 23 Wellness, the positive energy sets you up for a welcoming experience. My first question was about the name. The ladies explained that Läka means healing in Swedish,

Samantha Devereaux

and they felt that within their practices, it is important that they help folks build a wellness plan. Alexandra tells us that she realised she wanted to positively impact society by helping others at an early age. She saw folks close to her struggling with addictions and knew that wasn't the life for her. Alexandra headed to school to become an addiction counsellor and served in that position for several years before heading back to school to achieve her Masters of Social Work. Samantha herself experienced challenges at a young age that led to unhelpful coping outlets that began to impact her physical health and wellness. Samantha's own journey to wellness kickstarted her passion for addictions and mental health. She became an addiction counsellor and then decided to take the next step and returned to school to graduate with a Masters in Counselling Psychotherapy. I greatly appreciate the background both Samantha and Alexandra have. They have already gained life experience in their fields and can help folks with multiple situations ranging from anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma to borderline personality disorder. Läka utilises Mindfulness Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and offers Youth Groups (13-18). Their philosophy is simple, it is an honour to be on a journey with each person who reaches out to them. Samantha and Alexandra provide a holistic approach to build a trusting relationship with each client, to listen and help folks build

Emily explains intuitive eating is looking at your relationship with food and health holistically, finding a healthy balance, and understanding and being aware of what you are eating. It’s about trusting your body’s hunger and fullness cues and being mindful of how your body feels when you eat certain foods. With a culinary chef background, a masters degree, and a joy of recipe development, this dietitian views the palate (if you will) on a larger scale. Her goal is to help others learn to eat appropriately for themselves and build food strategies that are focused on eating correctly and sustainably in the long term for the whole body food function, overall health and well-being. Emily explained that we as a society have a rather complex relationship with our food, and it is her job to help you understand that, to help you build healthy eating habits, a meal plan with you that works and guide you in finding joy and fun in both cooking and eating. COVID has left a mark on our eating habits, and Emily is here to support us. So reach out and let her help guide you Emily Kichler to some food changes today.

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

PHYSICAL INJURY: MENTAL CHALLENGE “Failure I can live with. Not trying is what I can’t handle.” ~ Sanya Richards Ross “Turn every setback into a comeback.” ~ Kobe Bryant At the end of the day, a few weeks ago, I was unable to walk. The next morning, I was hobbling about. My left replacement knee was the issue. There was considerable swelling at my knee and on my lower leg. Fortunately, nothing hurt unless I put pressure on my leg. I gave it a few days to self-correct, but no improvement occurred. I had a physio appointment already scheduled, and the conclusion was IT Band Syndrome. It is an overuse injury of the connective tissue located on the outer thigh and knee. Ensuing inflammation causes pain on the outside of the knee. I was instructed to ice, rest and only walk until I felt major tightness and the onset of pain. That was a maximum of one kilometre. One evening, a car stopped, and a man offered my dog and me a ride home. We had only gone to the mailbox. I could stop the pain by getting off my feet. But I couldn’t stop the frustration. I am accustomed to being on my feet a lot. I walk and run long distances in training as I prepare for multi-day races. My response to advice recommending rest is generally to ignore it. So there I was. I have been hoping to enter a 48-hour race in October and to chase some age-group records. Now is the time to be ramping up into consistent, progressive training. I have not been in a race since May 2019, so mentally, I am raring to go. But my body baulked. Could I handle it? Simply willing myself to go out and walk was not working. Two local athletes I had talked with, who had suffered the same injury, both told me it had taken them about a year to recover. A few days after the physio session, I set out to see if I could walk an easy 4k on the trail. I met a friend who

was cycling. We talked about my situation. I asked him how he reacts to injuries. He used the word “terrifying.” I had not thought of my injury in such a dire way but, as I age, I do wonder if an injury or setback will mean the end of my competitive career. In running, that career has lasted almost 45 years. Although I have been unable to run or walk many times before, I have always returned to competition. Injury for an athlete is about much more than pain level, treatment and physical rehabilitation. It also presents important psychological issues. The downtime required for the body to stabilize can be an unsettling mental experience, with thoughts of missing or not being prepared for upcoming events and worries about career-ending damage. You are facing the unknown. It is most important to remain positive, no matter what. You have to retain the motivation to complete the necessary treatments, do the required exercises and handle any frustration or depression. Mental toughness is absolutely mandatory for optimal recovery. For many of us, our sports participation is part of our identity. If the injury leads to a long lay-off or the end of a career, how do we view ourselves, and how will others view us? Will we have to create some new identity that is not our first choice? Even as we come back from our injury, we can be faced with anxiety, frustration and a lack of confidence that we will be able to get back to our previous level. If we don’t believe that we can come back, then we won’t come back. The single strongest operating force in our bodies is our brains. Mental stability during a physical injury is crucial. As it turned out, I caught a lucky break. When I returned the following week for physio, Dan asked me how the walking was progressing. I told him very poorly; I could still not go comfortably more than 1k. He noted that my left shoulder was dropped and decided to try something different. He spent the session working on left shoulder scar tissue and mobility. The next day, magically, I could walk, and in a few more days, I was back to normal. I was excited when I returned to see him. I told him I was impressed with how well he knew me and his knowledge of the body’s connections. He laughed and replied, “I was just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something would stick.” So neither of us could really explain exactly what had happened. Well, I have often said it’s better to be lucky than good. Will I be as fortunate next time? As we get older, those next times seem to come more frequently. What will it be like when I can no longer make a comeback to competition? I have taken part in competitive sports for over 65 years now. Sport has been a major part of what I have done for most of my life. The end of my competitive sports career is hardly “terrifying” to think about, but it will definitely be a difference-maker

for me. I gave up competitive hockey and softball because at the level I wanted to play, the athletes kept getting younger than me every year until I couldn’t keep up. I had to give up tennis because of my knees. However, running has lasted longer than any of the other sports. When the day comes, how will I handle it? What will I do next? I am most used to, most comfortable with, and most motivated to do, physical activities. I have always used competition to push myself. I hope that, when the time comes, I will accept it with grace. I know that I have been blessed to be healthy enough, and to have found the time, to partake in sports for virtually my entire life. I have made innumerable friends and have so many wonderful memories. So I believe I will be grateful for what I have been given and that I will still tell my stories to anyone who will listen.

“ROOT CAUSE” SOLUTIONS

May Change Your Life BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

I hold no secrets as to why the focal point of my practice is educating and empowering my clients in “Root Cause” health solutions, especially the connections to our digestive health mysteries due to the potential life-altering health implications. As a teen, I struggled with anorexia and bulimia for several years and messed up my system significantly until I was about 29! Growing up, my children had multiple health challenges, likely because of my previous nutritional deficits and challenges. I was determined to study, understand and help them in overcoming these problems. It was a successful labour of love and dedication that led me to my career. Writing this article, I’m feeling very emotional as the one year anniversary of my Dad’s death approaches on July 18. I continue to be passionate in my efforts to help others understand the connections between emotional health, nutritional and lifestyle choices to prevent certain potential issues or, at the very least, to reduce the severity and frequency of symptoms affecting their quality of life. My Dad would have been 80 this coming November. Until some time within the last decade, Dad was a bran muffin and coffee, “clockwork regular” kind of guy when it came to bowel habits. At some point, there was a shift in his regularity,

something that he was not open to discussing or investigating, so his symptoms and growing abdominal pain and discomfort were not things openly shared to ensure proper investigation. Looking back, we understand that a previous very invasive abdominal surgery and scar tissue adhesions played a big role but even more so was this unresolved shift in emotional health. Dad was never the same after losing my younger sister Cathie to genetically predisposed, particularly aggressive forms of colon and ovarian cancers initially wrongly diagnosed as severe GERD and diverticulitis. My family history would strongly indicate that we have an inherent propensity for digestive health problems and therefore need to pay close and special attention to our symptomology to reduce the risk of serious issues. Taking responsibility for our health is something I cannot emphasize enough – understanding the how and why of physiology and function, analysing why negative changes occur, discovering what imbalances have occurred and what is needed to restore balance. Our bodies are miracles; this life, our bodies, are a gift to be respected and honoured. You and only you understand when things are not “normal” and imbalance is occurring. So yes, in my practice, we talk about “s#@t” - a lot. What goes in and how it comes out is so incredibly important. It can tell us so very much about our overall health and dis-ease processes. I have spent the last 17 years working in Integrative Health Care Pharmacy settings, working to establish a bridge between allopathic and complementary/ alternative health care options. It is why I was excited five years ago to make the decision to work alongside Mike Marini Brought to you by the:

MICHAEL MARINI, B.Sc. Phm. Pharmacist 328 Main Street, Port Dover 519-583-3784 1-888-233-8111

at Dover Apothecary - where Patient care and education is so very integral to how we endeavour to support our community. We also help our clients choose from our excellent selection of high quality, scientifically validated therapeutic supplements. Time has made it abundantly clear that so many people are unaware that their symptoms are not actually normal. Digestive and bowel issues are not something you have to simply endure. Yes, it can take time, effort, and money to discover your unique challenges and triggers. Attempting to control your symptoms by masking the problems with the myriad selection of “over the counter” products is a band-aid approach and a potential recipe for serious problems. Such methods are not even remotely an acceptable solution for chronic problems affecting your quality of life and freedom to enjoy good health and vitality. In fact, ignoring these changes and discomforts can dramatically alter the course of your life. Everybody is likely to experience mild, periodic episodes of digestive discomfort, but anything ongoing deserves some investigation and corrective action. There is no one size fits all solution - we are each singularly, beautifully unique, influenced by so very many factors. It is why I do individualized consultations with my clients, to help them discover the areas of their nutrition and lifestyle that they have the power and ability to alter and improve should they wish to take responsibility. We talk about the correct balance of fibres, both Soluble and Insoluble – to regulate the system depending on symptomology and food tolerances. Addressing activity level, water intake, sleep habits, nutritional status, emotional health, supplements and medications, family history - all of these things and more, are part of what is taken

The Importance of Self-care

JULY 24, IS INTERNATIONAL SELF-CARE DAY Self-care takes on new importance this year as we slowly inch towards the end of the pandemic. It is now more important than ever. Our focus over the past year and a half has been on getting through the pandemic and keeping safe, while not much thought has been given to our mental health post-pandemic. Self-care is all about the important role you play in your own physical and mental health. Whether it’s exercising, eating well, applying sunscreen, quitting smoking, being consistent with medical checkups and routine screening tests, finding a work-life balance, and everything else we need to do to stay healthy. into consideration to discover the amazing puzzle of YOU! It is not within my scope of practice to diagnose or prognosticate. There are no replacements for the appropriate qualified medical care and diagnostic testing. However, it is my mission (and I would be most honoured) to help shed light and give direction on the course of action needed to support your efforts to take charge of your health if that is your goal. The range of controllable health care conditions you can be liberated from, given some serious attention and effort, is mind-blowing! You may be very pleasantly surprised to learn the powerful influence you can achieve by adjusting your fibre balance, response to stress, improving food choices or food combinations, water and activity levels. We can’t expect or achieve a different outcome if we don’t implement and embrace the appropriate changes. Regardless of your particular upper or lower digestive health issues: GERD, heartburn, IBS, IBD, constipation, diarrhea, etc, there are sound methods to support a better balance for you and exact a positive influence over a wide variety of common North American chronic health concerns. Consultations are available in office and virtual. Your insurance may cover consultation services for Holistic Nutritionists or Certified Natural Nutritional Clinical Practitioners.

By taking some time out to engage in self-care, you may relieve the pressures of everyday life and reset yourself to get back to a healthy point where productivity is once again maximized. Considering the costs associated with mental health services, lost wages and more, spending some time on yourself may ultimately benefit everyone. Self-care is an important activity to do every day. Doing so will lead toward a better balance among your dimensions of wellness and lead toward improved overall health and wellness. Life is precious, and it is meant to be enjoyed. This year, celebrate Self-Care Day by reflecting on the role self-care has played for each of us individually and all of us collectively during the COVID-19 pandemic and by planning for our health and well-being in the future.

TREATMENT OF CATARACT - PART TWO In the early stages of a cataract, your optometrist may be able to prescribe new glasses to give you the sharpest vision possible. When the cataracts start to interfere with your daily activities, your optometrist will refer you to an eye surgeon who may recommend the surgical removal of the cataracts. Recent studies have shown that cataract surgery outcomes can be enhanced if patients treat any dry eye issues prior to surgery, so be sure to discuss any dry eye symptoms with your optometrist or ophthalmologist. During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens implant. You may even be able to have your vision corrected so that you will not need driving or reading glasses after surgery! Be sure to discuss your implant options with your optometrist or ophthalmologist. Let our caring optometrists take care of your vision!

ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH TOBY BARRETT

I am here with Mr. Toby Barrett, MPP for Haldimand-Norfolk.

I first want to say what an honour it is to meet you. I have walked by your office in downtown Simcoe daily and have always spotted either your truck or tractor. I have not seen your sign lately. Have you moved? The office has been downtown Simcoe for 25 years. We have made so many friends, and people would often drop by the office for a visit. Being downtown has enabled us to develop many good relationships. The office is now on Davis Street East. I have wondered what MPP stands for and what your jobs are as MPP for Haldimand-Norfolk. MPP stands for Member of Provincial Parliament. Both my Grandfather and my Father were involved in politics, so I was born into it. I remember enjoying seeing my name around town when I was around the age of 4. My Grandfather had the same name, so it was actually for him, but I thought it was for me.

well. How do you think Haldimand-Norfolk is doing with keeping the numbers of people down? I think that we are very fortunate that people who live here understand how important it is to stay safe. Over 70% of people in HN have received their first shot. They are wearing masks, getting vaccinated and spending time outside. We are also fortunate that we have open spaces like the Lions Park and trails to spend that time. Have you done any farm work in your life? If so, what type of farming? I grew up in farming, mostly beef cattle and chickens. I’m a manual worker and love this kind of work. Now I have 3 guinea hens, and I grow tomatoes and soya beans. I guess I would call it hobby farming now. Thank you for taking the time out to talk to me. I really appreciate it. I found out that you’re not a bad guy after all! Thanks for all you do in and for our community!

I am an elected representative, so basically, my job is to represent the people who elect me, plus everybody else. People will send E-mails, write letters and add comments/posts on Social Media about things that are important to them. I love my job, and I am continually working on items from the last election. I have heard on the news that you and your wife recently had the COVID virus. I am so glad to see that you are both "THIS, TH AT A N D THE OTHER" SP ONSOR ED BY:

The Bumblebee necklace from Bel-Jewelry offers a wonderful touch of grace to the ensemble alongside the Bijoux desert bracelet, which offers that timeless piece to the look that every bookkeeper/model should have for a day at work or a fun evening out! Thanks Olivia, for taking time out of your busy day to show off the latest from Sassyfras! 814 Cockshutt Rd, Simcoe
