JUNE 2021 Helping build a bet ter community.

When Randy suggested the June Boomer Music Experience focus on the dynamic duo of Simon and Garfunkel, I was all in. Make sure to give a listen as Randy and I play a few tunes and talk about the legacy of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

Tune in this month on Facebook at HubMedia.info. Way back in the day, my wife and I attended a concert in Toronto at the SkyDome, which is now the Rogers Centre. I remember the event as if it was yesterday.

It is time to support those who support us... our frontline workers By: Dave Scott My concern for health care workers extends to two of my family members. Both of my sisters are frontline workers. They have been in the field for several years and really enjoy their work. They have that personal touch when it comes to people, easy-going, caring and hardworking. Their jobs are with them 24/7. It is how they are built; they go all-in (it is a family trait, trust me). One sister recently walked away from her well-paying job. She was simply wiped out, tired of all the testing, and burned out. She decided to put her own health first. I know that was the right decision for her. It wasn't easy, because she doesn't quit! My youngest sister works in the same field in the Guelph area, and she is also at the point of walking away. My sisters are dedicated to the folks they work with, and they know how important the trust and friendships they have built are. That makes this kind of decision even harder for them. In my opinion, our frontline workers' mental and physical

well-being is entering into (or is already in) a dangerous zone. These professionals are overworked and face daily challenges well beyond the scope of their jobs. Internal strife, lack of funding, lack of adequate staff and losing people they care about is just a typical day. No one can handle that on their own without proper supports and safeguards! These are just two examples of folks struggling in the healthcare industry. Their passion alone cannot sustain their mental and physical well-being. I don't have the answer to make everything return to normal. I do know that if my two sisters walk away from their professions after all these years, they are not alone, and changes need to occur! I always try and find the positive in any situation, yet the deeper I look at the daily challenges in their jobs, my advice is simple: To be in it for the long run, you have to keep yourself healthy, and that may mean you need to walk away for today. You have to have it (good health), to share it.

Released: 2021-02-02 (by Statistics Canada) Seven in ten health care workers who participated in a recent crowdsourcing initiative reported worsening mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to results released today by Statistics Canada. Participating health care workers who worked in direct contact with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 and those who experienced restrictions or conditions on the supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) were more affected than others. One-third of participating health care workers report fair or poor mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted that health care workers may be at increased risk of mental health impacts because of a number of factors, such as increased risk of exposure and demanding working conditions. Eight months into the global pandemic, one-third (33%) of participating health care workers reported fair or poor mental health, one-third (33%) reported good mental health, and one-third (33%) reported very good or excellent mental health. Most participating health care workers (70%) reported that their mental health was “somewhat worse now” or “much worse now” compared with before March 2020. In addition, when asked to choose between five levels indicating how stressful most days were, 56% chose one of the two highest levels, reporting that most days were “quite a bit stressful” or “extremely stressful.”

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

THE JOURNEY TO UNDERSTANDING “Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.” ~ Frank Herbert “Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.” ~ Marie Curie “Sometimes you just need to talk to a 4-year-old and an 84-year-old to understand life again.” ~ Kristen Butler What do you do when you come across a word or a concept you do not know? Do you immediately check a dictionary or google its meaning? Do you simply skip past it? I find that, for me, it depends on the circumstance. If it is something that is capturing my interest, I absolutely take the time, immediately or later, to delve into its meaning. I recently came across a good example in The Sunday Star. It was both a word and a concept. The German word is “geworfenheit.” Its English translation is “thrownness.” It refers to how, at the outset, none of us choose to be who or where we are. We arrive in the world, thrown into a situation we never chose. Then we have to start figuring out how to deal with it. We have to make our own history, but we have no say in the initial circumstances. The concept was introduced by German philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) to describe our individual existences as “being thrown” into the world. Immediately, we have to face frustrations, sufferings and demands that we do not select, such as who our family is, where we live, what our basic health and body type is, our duties and the social conventions we have to follow. We have to fight through a beginning not determined by us to a life story that is not binding and has not yet been determined. We have to navigate our own ways toward the freedom that we instinctively seem to need.

As I delved into the meaning of “geworfenheit,” I pursued a separate thought. Do you remember The Doors’ classic song “Riders on the Storm” from the 1960s? It begins with the memorable verse Riders on the storm Riders on the storm Into this house we’re born Into this world we’re thrown Like a dog without a bone An actor out alone Riders on the storm. Jim Morrison, the lead vocalist of The Doors, was a voracious reader even in high school. In university, at UCLA, he studied Comparative Literature, including works by existentialist writers such as Genet, Sartre and Camus. He read Nietzsche and perhaps he read Martin Heidegger’s concept that we are thrown into the world, a world we can’t understand or make sense of. Heidegger was trying to grapple with the accidental nature of human existence in a world that has not in the beginning, in any way, been made our own by our conscious choice. In Paris, in 1999, after the World 100k Championships, I walked in the renowned Père Lachaise Cemetery. Close to an outer edge, near a boundary iron fence, I saw Jim Morrison’s gravestone. He had died in the bathtub of his Paris apartment of a drug overdose, twenty-eight years earlier. There were more flowers at his grave than at those of the most famous people buried there, who included Moliere, Chopin, Honore de Balzac, Oscar Wilde, Sarah Bernhardt and Edith Piaf. I was reminded of all this simply because I was curious as to the meaning of a new word. To take it a step further, what does the learning of the new term mean for me and my journey to understanding the world and life? Firstly, it reminds me to have gratitude and to acknowledge that we are not born equal. There I was, most fortunately, being thrown into Canada. In many ways, I had already won the lottery. Secondly, I was thrown into a solid household with loving parents. Thirdly, my dad had a stable job and we lived in a nice, little bungalow in Toronto. I had a mom who liked to take me around the neighbourhood and I had doting aunts and grandparents. There were no health issues and I was, rightfully, a happy baby. So I definitely won the lottery. As I have experienced the many decades of my life, my appreciation and gratitude for where I was thrown have continued to grow. My particular beginnings, which I understand to be a random act, allowed me to have the strength, the security and the opportunities to forge the life that I have. In general, things that I have desired, and not achieved, have been directly my fault, not the fault of having been randomly thrown into an impossible situation. I could

stupidly still wish for something I never got, or feel sorry for myself for losses, some of which have brought immense sadness, but I believe that would be to miss the point. I believe the point is to learn to see beyond myself. I was thrown into this existence without any control of what my circumstance was going to be. But once I was here, with each passing day, I had more control over what my life would be and is still going to be. It is now clearly up to me. It is my responsibility, and my responsibility alone, to shape the life I want and to handle the inevitable adversity along the way. Personally, I think that if we are grateful for all the positives in our lives, and if we treat others with the respect they have earned and if we try to bring some happiness to the world as we continue on life’s path, then we are well on the way in our journey to understanding.

Serving The Eye Care Needs Of Norfolk County Since 1947

June is Cataract Awareness Month! What Do You Need to Know? Cataracts are the result of the clear lens in your eye becoming cloudy. Cataracts happen to almost everyone as we age but are most often found in those over age 60. Cataracts may develop slowly over many years, or they may form rapidly in a matter of months. They develop without pain or redness. An eye exam with an optometrist can determine if you have cataracts. Early cataract symptoms include decreased night vision, haloes around lights, trouble reading in low light, or trouble with glare.

Prevention

Personalized Rehabilitation Programs with a Whole Body Approach

You can slow the growth of cataracts by wearing UV protection, not smoking, and eating foods rich in antioxidants such as berries and dark green veggies. Cataracts can develop with the use of certain medications or be associated with some medical conditions; be sure to discuss your overall health with your optometrist! Next month we talk about treatment.

SHIRLEY SHAW

Shirley, what is the motto of the Special Olympics?

What are all the sports involved?

The motto is “Let me win. If I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Swimming, golf, baseball, bowling, basketball, and floor hockey

How long have you been involved with the Special Olympics?

Are you thinking about adding other sports? I really liked darts, but they don’t have it anymore.

Well over 20 years. What made you decide to be a coach? My daughter. She has Down Syndrome. When she was young, she was a good swimmer, so we started from there. We started with 10 people and now have a team of 40. What do coaches do? I used to be a distance swimmer, so I started coaching. I have taken many coaching courses since then. I am the head coach, so I evaluate what level a person is at and what stroke they are good at. Then I determine which team will be the best fit. We have ten coaches. They introduce new strokes and help the swimmers get used to wearing bathing caps and goggles. They practice four times a week. How many athletes do you coach, and do you have specific coaches for different sports? Yes, we do. I am in charge of all the sports programs, and I’m the head coach of the swim team and also oversee the other ten swimming coaches.

Yes, we are currently trying out snow-shoeing. We don’t have darts because it’s not officially considered a sport. What do you see in the future for Special Olympics? We would like to build all of the other programs up, like we have with swimming. We get lots of support for the swim team, so I’m hoping we can get that for the other sports too. If you are interested in either being a coach or an athlete, who do you contact? Go online or contact me. I will put you in touch with the person connected with that sport. Coaches start as volunteers. Names are submitted to the board, then after a year, volunteers are expected to start taking coaching courses. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me, Shirley. I wish you all the continued success with Special Olympics.

What are the athletes doing during COVID-19? The coaches are encouraging virtual exercising to keep fit since they cannot swim during the pandemic. Team members are doing lots of walking, dry-land training and keeping in contact with their team members so that they can encourage each other. "THIS, TH AT A N D THE OTHER" SP O NSO R ED BY:

INSOLUBLE FIBRE Grandma says, "Eat your roughage" BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

Balance and moderation are KEY Understanding fibre can be tricky to start, but once you have the basics down, your body will thank you for applying what you have learned. Last month, Soluble Fibre was the topic of conversation. This month, we learn about the “ins and outs” (pun totally intended) of the Insoluble forms - what they are and how they work! Growing up, I was blessed to have a grandma with a keen interest and knowledge about nutrition. As children, I recall her telling us to eat our roughage (aka Insoluble Fibre), and these are simply the edible but indigestible portion of plant foods. Sources include such plant foods as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains (animal products do not contain any fibre at all unless processed and added). Many of these food sources take considerable amounts of chewing and have some degree of water content and are a source of natural sugars/carbs - also why many people have difficulty with certain “healthy” foods! If we eat a diet that is deficient or excessive in either type of fibre, we can create a great deal

of intestinal distress, and this can be confusing to most people because we attribute great health benefits to these foods such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients. Specific health conditions will dictate which form of fibre should be the focal point when we are experiencing imbalance. Having a clear idea of how your bowel health is functioning is an easy key indicator of whether you are consuming the right balance of these critical fibre sources. Remember, most North Americans consume only 15 to 17 grams of fibre daily, and a balance of 35 to 50 grams daily will reduce the risk and help alleviate most of the chronic disease conditions we experience! Face it, people are having issues in the “throne room.” Just visualize for the moment the sheer volume of choices, the rows of products in retail spaces, marketed to the myriad of digestive torments we experience! Sadly, this can make people feel that their complaints are to be expected, that it is normal to have these unpleasant issues, and yet our bodies are truly a miracle and will respond appropriately when we utilize the right tools. How do we find the right balance? First things first, the Queen of *#!* says we MUST pay attention to what we leave in the toilet – it is the most obvious and easiest way to understand whether you are digesting, absorbing and effectively eliminating what you are consuming! If something is Brought to you by the:

MICHAEL MARINI, B.Sc. Phm. Pharmacist 328 Main Street, Port Dover 519-583-3784 1-888-233-8111

suddenly not normal for you and there is no particular known trigger, this requires some insight, investigation and if the issue persists, prompt intervention by a health care professional to ensure there are no serious, underlying concerns. You know your body best; advocate for your own health by addressing issues, not by masking them with readily available over the counter products, whether medicinal or supplements. The right fibres at the right time If foods are racing through, you are going too frequently, and you have to rush to the toilet or perhaps your stool is thin, loose, and possibly with undigested food particles, you may need to reduce the amount of Insoluble/Indigestible fibre you are consuming. These fibres can be very abrasive and irritating to an intestinal tract that is inflamed. Increasing your soothing soluble fibres and water and having them when you have an insoluble fibre may be a solution for you. **Mucous, blood or change of colour and odour are very strong indicators that you need to address things sooner rather than later with a qualified Health Care Professional. It is very common when our local fruits and veggies are in season to experience temporary loose stool because we consume higher amounts of these delicious foods! For those of you that have infrequent or sporadic bowel movements (they may be dry and pellety or dry and bulky but difficult to pass, unsatisfying and incomplete, or simply irregular), that require straining and may cause hemorrhoids, should review fibre intake

June is Men’s Health Month: IMPROVE MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH

Life can be a bowl of cherries for men in June: golf is in full swing, barbecues are sizzling, and friends are enjoying a cold beverage together. But this roller coaster year is different. Stress, anxiety, and loneliness are at an all-time high for Canadian men and their families since the pandemic started. That’s why the focus of Men’s Health Month this year is on improving men’s mental health. Men are hit especially hard because they are hesitant to get help and feel like they need to be seen as strong and “tough it out.” Statistics show that men only account for 30 per cent of people who use mental health support services. We need to do better. That’s why delivering services online where a man can access them anonymously is an important part of the solution. The good news: the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation and Anxiety Canada have joined forces to improve the state of men’s mental health in Canada. They’ve also expanded their roster of National Champions, welcoming NHL great Kevin Bieksa and radio host Buzz Bishop who are participating in this year’s virtual speaker events. Here’s a list of events for June 2021: Virtual Speaker Event Series Not sure how to start a conversation about mental health? Want to learn more about using physical activity to manage stress and anxiety? This four-part series covers to determine whether you are getting the proper ratio of Insoluble and Soluble fibre along with water and exercise to stimulate the peristaltic (wave-like, muscular contractions of the intestines) action, also known as bowel motility. Let your body guide you When we tap into our innate wisdom and have a more thorough understanding of what we can do to have optimal function through nutrition and lifestyle practices, people are often amazed at how quickly they begin to experience a much better quality of life and resolve many of their unpleasant complaints. At Dover Apothecary and in my home office practice, we are committed to helping our community live healthier

these topics and more with the help of panellists such as longtime NHLer and executive Trevor Linden, Olympic gold medallist Simon Whitfield, and two-time Grey Cup winner Shea Emry. Make Your Move Pledge Pledging to get a little more active during Canadian Men’s Health Month - say, by walking for 15 minutes daily or taking part in the Sort-of-Sweaty Workouts - will help you stay on track, combat boredom, and give you a sense of accomplishment when you’re done. You can also inspire friends, family, and co-workers to follow your lead. Make Your Move Pledge right now! A Special Gift...

for the old man

By: Dave Scott With Father's Day just days away, it is time for you to buckle down and do something sweet for the old man! As a dad, I can only make suggestions for all of you young ones about what would be best to keep the old guy happy! Now, most fathers kind of shy away from Father's Day. You know we don't want all that fuss about us. We already know how great we are, but I guess I could throw a few bones out about pleasing the old fellow (hey, maybe my own kids will read my story). First up, no breakfast in bed. That's a Mother's Day thing. Let us get up by ourselves and putter around the kitchen, making something we like. You can put the coffee on, and when we are done, you can do our dishes. Now that would be nice. When we say, "I should get that lawn work done today," that is your cue to give us a hand! For lunch, just bring us a big ol' sandwich, cold pop and throw a classic rock album on the record player. For the afternoon, when we say we are going to the garage for a bit, that is the hint for you to come along (and put all the tools back you have left lying around), and that broom isn't for leaning on... feel free to put it to work. For dinner, you can spark up the BBQ and tell the old guy, "I got this" (please make sure you know how to work the grill). We need our dinners or well, you know...! You can top the day off with a nice homemade card. Yes, we like those. It shows you put the effort in! Now, I know all this is asking a lot, but in the end, none of it will really matter... the coffee, lawn, lunch, music, garage, dinner and card. You know why?

NORFOLK

MEETING

Because all we really want is just to spend the day with you. Nothing makes us smile more (a clean garage is just a nice bonus!).
