LIFE AS ETHAN. By: Dave Scott

I pulled up to the curb in front of the home of Paula Johnston to interview her son, Ethan. My own son was with me and said, "Oh, I know Ethan. I go to school with him." I asked what he was like, and he simply said, "He's a really nice guy!" So, off I went to chat with Ethan.

He is your typical eighteen-year-old young man with dreams and aspirations. He struck me as focused and determined when we sat down at their dining room table to have a conversation about life as Ethan.

He was exceptionally polite, offering me a glass of water and making every effort so I would feel comfortable. For eighteen, he is in great shape, and it is easy to recognize he takes pride in going to the gym and working out! He shared with me that since he has started working out, just over a year ago, he has gained 20 pounds and feels better than ever. He eats up to 4000 calories a day, his breakfast starts out with 6 egg whites, yogurt, oatmeal and coffee. Every day he is a model of consistency; he needs to be! Scholastically he is right on the mark, finishing grade twelve at Simcoe Composite School and preparing to head to British Columbia for school in the fall. Last year at seventeen, he and a buddy drove to BC to check out the school. He played hockey and soccer up to a few years ago, and it sounds like he was no slouch at either sport.

As the interview moved through his story, I began to understand the quiet confidence within Ethan. We chatted about his family and the tremendous support from them as well as his friends and his girlfriend. Their encouragement means so much to this young man. He talked about the near future and the goals he hopes to achieve as life moves forward. I was impressed with the ease in which he told me about his life. Up to this point in the story, everything about Ethan fit in with the average eighteen-year-old.

What you don't know is that Ethan was diagnosed at a very early age with both diabetes and cystic fibrosis (CF).

Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, sticky buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs.

As a child, McMaster Hospital was a second home for the Johnston family. The everyday routine of needles for his diabetes, as well as the CF struggles became part of his life. Ethan explained that when he would become ill, he would end up in the hospital. As he grew up he began to understand the importance of being as healthy as possible. I could see during our conversation how Ethan recognized the significance of doing everything he can to achieve physical, spiritual, nutritional and mental excellence.

This visit with Ethan only gave me a small glimpse of what life must be like. Not once did I see an ounce of self-pity. There was no poor me. It was more like, okay I've got this, I can and will deal with it, but it will not define me or who I will become.

Ethan displays many of the characteristics we would all love to see within each other. At a young age, he is wise beyond his years, which will serve him well down the road. I know that he will provide inspiration to others battling CF and help them to focus on living life to its fullest. As I left, I thought about what my son had said when we pulled up. He did not talk about the CF or diabetes, he spoke about Ethan the person; Ethan, who is a really nice guy. I smiled, I think Ethan would appreciate that!

Standing at the start line of the 6 Days at the Fair race a few minutes early was a good feeling for me. I had been preparing for this moment for ten months, ever since having my second knee replacement. To compete in this multi-day event for the second time had been a steadfast goal. My trusted crew, Mac, and I had put much forethought into our preparations. The basic plan was for me to be the hamster head, that is to complete as many one mile circuits at the New Jersey State Fairgrounds as possible during the six days (144 hours) and for Mac to do everything else required to facilitate that task. (She volunteered – honest!)

I would run and walk in 3 hour blocks with the goal of doing 5 blocks per day. At the end of each block Mac would attend to my feet and any other issues, most usually my back. I would have meals/treats she prepared or got from the aid station, change socks and sometimes other clothing or shoes. We’d exchange information and stories from the race and then I’d be on my way, often with her help getting down the stairs of the trailer. The cycle would be repeated over and over again throughout the week. After a few days I added a few short naps when I was not ready mentally or physically to go back out. During the night, after she had gone down for a well-earned rest, I would stay out and walk for a couple of hours, enjoying the tranquillity of the quiet and the darkness.

As we have been to the race before, we know our way around. We have made lots of friends and have a good relationship with the race organizers. Of course, we didn’t know who else we might meet this year or what memorable interactions we might have or what might happen in the race itself.

It is surprisingly difficult to remember many of the details and the sequence of events, due to exhaustion, sleep deprivation and the repetitive nature of each day’s mandatory activities. However, a number of moments shine through the generally rain-filled days and nights.

As I walked to the start line for the beginning of the race at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, I noticed a competitor to my far

left wearing a giant chicken head. I had no reaction as I was focusing on what I was about to undertake. Day 1 provided the best weather of the entire week, reasonable temperatures and no precipitation. I followed my plan and Mac attended to me. All went well, with me finishing the first 24 hours with 61 miles having had a goal of 60. Most of the time I kept to myself, doing a lot of easy running and limiting my interactions to greetings and check-ins with runners from other years.

I was ready to go on Day 2 with no worries or particular problems. It turned very hot, with an official temperature of 86 degrees and brilliant sun. Mac added rotating freezer-stored hats, ice bandanas and cold water-soaked arm sleeves for my hands, which swell during extreme sun and heat conditions, to our routine. I felt the effects of the heat, particularly during the afternoon, as the course is not shaded. I watched and looked forward to lengthening shadows finally covering parts of the road later in the day.

The heat was particularly oppressive as it was the most I had felt yet this year due to our virtually non-existent spring.

I managed 51 miles for the day.

Beginning on Day 3, it rained and then it rained some more.

There was a violent thunderstorm that took out power in some surrounding areas and caused a tree to come down near the race timing area. We had been told that the storm was coming and I was watching the clouds building in the sky for some time. When it arrived, it did so suddenly and with ferocious intensity. Luckily, when the skies opened, I was only a short distance from our trailer. I surprised myself with how well I was able to sprint when truly motivated. The storm lasted for about three hours, most of which I spent napping. I awoke when I heard the sounds of people coming back out onto the course as the heavy rain abated. There were now several places on the route that had streams running through them. In one spot, just before the short trail section, a platform was laid down for us to traverse a newly-formed pond. However, the pond often increased in size whenever the rain intensified so we still had to go through water to get to the platform.

I think Mac took even more care looking after my feet as the days progressed, in order to keep blisters at bay. She was washing socks on a regular basis and coming up with inventive ways to dry them such as stretching them over empty Boost bottles. Shoes were packed with newspaper to dry them out. Due to her ingenuity, I never had to go back out wearing wet socks or shoes. Believe me, that was a serious treat, and an advantage for me over many others.

At some stage the temperature dropped to about 40 degrees and it felt quite cold in the rain. I was wearing an In The Long Run Proudly Sponsored By

excellent rain jacket with hood along with gloves, that even when soaked, helped keep my hands warm. However, I did not have good rain pants. Mac did, so I tried them on and she ended up having to make do without them for several days. Should I be proud to say I wore the pants on our team, even though they were hers?

Details of the last part of the event are somewhat fuzzy although I know I was able to keep doing at least 50 miles a day. As time went on, I was slowly moving up the leaderboard and was excited when I broke into the top ten.

Basically, I always felt excellent mentally and reasonably good physically until the last few hours, when my lack of balance and severely swollen left leg became problematic.

Starting during the night of Day 6, I was leaning further and further forward as I mostly tried to powerwalk. I think I was looking like Groucho Marx in as much as my centre of gravity was so far ahead of my core that I could move forward quite well, but I was now unable to stop without putting my hands on some sturdy immovable structure. I felt like a seaplane coming in for a landing when I headed toward the food aid station. I had to put my hands out in front of me to grab onto the top of the picnic table in order to stop. People would glance at me looking a bit alarmed.

If I wanted something from my cooler, I charged into the outer wall of our trailer and tried to steady myself with one hand while I opened the cooler with the other. Hopefully, Mac was sound asleep and not peeking around the corner shooting a video. When I went to the washroom, I’d come careening in toward the urinal at breakneck speed. One time, I laughed to myself when I saw Philip, who was in

second place, basically do the same thing as he came in bouncing off the wall.

Here I was, out during the last night, entertaining myself with my newfound uncontrollable forward locomotion.

By now I had also added my pronounced sideways lean to the mix. Mostly, I was on my own but there were some other competitors out on the course. I remember walking some laps with my friend George. We were having a great time talking and laughing at his stories of growing up in Montreal. During one lap, as we approached his tent, he said he had to stop to get his hat. His wife Erlinda was still up and she just looked at him as she pointed at his head.

George reached up and said, ”Oh ya, that’s a hat.” We carried on and I laughed. Upon reflection, I realized I was walking right beside him and knew he was wearing a hat the whole time. Later on George went for a sleep and I carried on. I happened to see him come out of his tent, apparently having difficulties with his own balance. He turned to close up the flap and went firing right back toward the tent’s interior much faster than he had come out.

There were still a number of hours to go and things were starting to get interesting. I remember that during this last night I spotted the chicken-headed runner up ahead in the dark misty distance now dressed in a full white chicken suit. By this time, both Mac and I were friendly with this large engaging character. As I caught up to him I noticed a printed sign pinned to his back, “Coached by Ann Trason.”

Therein lies a whole other story.

OPENING DAY EXCITEMENT When I was a child, I would never sleep the night before the opening of the season for trout or bass. I slept better Christmas Eve! That was the excitement I experienced in anticipation of hitting the water with my dad and brothers. I still have that enthusiasm to this day. Just ask my friend, Annette and my daughter, Emily! As I write this article the bass season opener in my part of Ontario opens within days.

The weeks leading up to any opening day for fish always meant rounding up tackle boxes and rods and reels and preparing them for the season. Lures were cleaned, spoons polished and hooks checked for sharpness, and if rusty, replaced. Of course sorting the lures and hooks and split and snap swivels and leaders and putting them in the appropriate section within the tackle boxes was necessary after many months of use, the months before. Somehow during the fishing season many items were never returned to their rightful spot or box.

Next to walleye, bass, particularly smallmouth bass, are one of the very sought after species in Ontario waters.

Smallmouth bass in the early part of the season are a fish that will take a variety of different baits and imitations thereof. They live in shallow and deep waters. This makes anglers of all abilities able to catch bass.

A lot of money does not have to be spent for any angler to be successful. Smallmouth bass can be caught in moving water, lakes and ponds. A boat is not required as you can stand along the shoreline. There is no need for expensive tackle or baits. A seven foot medium action spinning rod with a reel with a good quality drag equipped with eight pound Berkley Trilene XL monofilament line is a great setup to use. Baits can be live or artificial. If using live baits smallmouth bass like lively minnows, crayfish, leeches, hellgrammites and dew worms.

Be cognizant of the Rusty crayfish issue. In Ontario you can use crayfish for angling ONLY if the crayfish you use are caught within the waters you are fishing. You cannot transport crayfish from one body of water to another. The Rusty crayfish’s large size and aggressive eating habits have had serious impacts on native crayfish. The Rusty crayfish was believed to have been introduced into Ontario waters in 1960.

When choosing artificial baits try to mimic the abovementioned live foods a smallmouth eats. Hard body baits should be slender and long in shape to mimic the baitfish they pursue – shiners and spottail minnows, etc.

Largemouth bass generally require more robust rods and reels since they are typically found within heavy vegetation and cover and therefore require rods that will bring the fish quickly to the surface and keep them on top of their habitat. Live frogs are great natural serving Lake erie Boaters bait for largemouth bass. Most successful anglers for over 60 years use artificial baits. Rubber worms, spinnerbaits, jigs tipped with trailers and swimbaits are good choices to be successful when using artificial bait.

Typically early in the season a number of large bass will still either be on their nests reproducing or guarding their young. Therefore, practice selective harvest as much as possible. I can’t wait to get on the water and chase one of my favourite gamefish – smallmouth bass. Enjoy your bass season; I know Annette, Emily and I will!

INGREDIENTS ½ cup vegetable oil 1 cup sugar 1 cup Greek yogurt 3 eggs 1 tbsp lemon extract 1½ cups flour 2 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt 1 cup Fresh Cider Keg Raspberries Zest of 1 lemon, reserve lemon for glaze For the glaze 2 tbsp lemon juice + ¾ cups powdered sugar INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and lightly coat a 9x5 pan with cooking spray.

2. In a large bowl whisk together the oil and sugar. Add the yogurt, eggs, lemon zest and extract.

3. Slowly stir in the flour, baking powder and salt.

4. Fold in the frozen raspberries and pour the batter into the prepared pan.

5. Bake for 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

6. Let the loaf cool for at least an hour before turning it out onto a cooling rack.

7. Once cooled, whisk together the lemon juice and powdered sugar. Pour it evenly over the top.

8. Store in an airtight container.

Summer road construction season is here, and truck drivers and motorists alike need to be prepared.

Whether you've been driving for decades or got your driver's license last week, the tips below are important reminders to make sure you and road construction workers get home safely.

ONE. Expect the unexpected in road construction zones. Normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic lanes may be changed, and people and vehicles may be working on or near the road.

SIX. Slow down — don't drive too fast for conditions. A truck travelling at 60 mph travels 88 feet per second. If you're going 60 and you pass a sign that says "Road Work 1,500 feet," you'll be in that work zone in 17 seconds.

TWO. Slow down, be alert and pay attention to the signs. Diamond-shaped orange warning signs are generally posted in advance of road construction projects.

SEVEN. Drive defensively — don't follow too close.

The most common crash in a highway work zone is the rear-end collision. Remember to leave seven seconds of braking distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Most rear-end accidents occur because of following too close and travelling too fast for conditions.

THREE. Comply with the directions given by the flagger. Stay alert and be prepared to obey the flagger's directions. In a construction zone, a flagger has the same authority as a regulatory sign, so you can be cited for disobeying his or her directions.

EIGHT. Keep using defensive driving techniques to save lives. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and traffic barriers, construction equipment and construction workers. Just like you, highway workers want to return home safely after each day's work.

FOUR. Be patient in road construction zones.

Construction zones aren't there to personally inconvenience you. They're necessary to improve the roads for everyone. Many areas have numerous construction sites in progress.

FIVE. Use the "Take 10" technique to change lanes.

Flashing arrow panels or "lane closed ahead" signs mean you need to merge as soon as safely possible. Don't zoom right up to the lane closure and then try to barge in. If everyone cooperates, traffic moves more efficiently. The "Take 10" technique involves putting on your turn signal at least three seconds before starting a lane change and using at least seven seconds to complete the lane change, looking at your mirrors throughout.

► ROAD TRIP BINGO. This fun game combines bingo with a scavenger hunt. Give each child a flat surface,

such as a clipboard or hardcover book, to put on his or her lap. Each player gets a free printable bingo card and a zip-lock bag with 16 pennies. When a player spies an item on his card, he covers the picture with a penny. Just like in regular bingo, the first player to cover all the squares in a straight line wins.

► LICENSE PLATE GAME. When we were kids, everyone seemed to play the license plate game on family road trips. Armed with a pad of paper, we would write down the name of each state as we spotted it. The goal, of course, was to nab all the provinces and some states.

► TIC TAC TOE. All you need are two players and a pencil to play this favourite standby. Player One places an X on the grid, Player Two plots an O. They continue to take turns until one player has three across. ► I'M GOING ON A PICNIC. This alphabet-based memory game is great for kids 5 and up. You don't

need a game board or any materials. The game can be played with as few as two players, but it's more fun when the whole family joins in. The man of great works.

About once a month Vic and I sit down in his gallery, have a coffee and catch up on life. This past visit was no different. We talked about the beautiful weather, Vic's golf game, and there was mention of how our families were doing. It was then Vic motioned over to a small painting of a raccoon that was propped up on his easel. Vic shook his head when I asked about it. He told me that for years back in the 70's when he was painting a bunch of northern scenes, for some reason he thought it would be fun to start dropping in a little raccoon at the bottom right, as a sort of Gibbon's logo.

Vic did a few prints, and folks liked it, so he ran with it for a few years. Nowadays those prints are long gone, sold to people from all over the province and beyond. Vic cannot remember why he did it the first time, but he knew he liked it and it added a little grace to his work. If you own one of his paintings with the raccoon in the bottom right, consider yourself lucky. Vic and I searched his print archives high and low, but to no avail. We could not find one of his prints with the raccoon on it. Just another wonderful story of the many great works of Vic.

Our good friends at The World of Plumbing have a little advice for when we have to solve the clogged drain problem.

Rob tells me the number one cause of clogged washroom sinks is hair. Hmm, why is he looking at my bald spot? I think he may be implying something!

Hair in the drain collects soap, dirt and bacteria which can lead to slow, smelly drains! For removing hair, try a Mini Snake (a thin rod with barbs), available at The World of Plumbing, that can be fed into most drains and snares the hair, which is simply pulled out when removed.

For the kitchen, the primary source of the problem is grease being dumped down the sink.

So first off, never dump grease down the sink. Even if you are using hot water over it, sooner or later it will settle somewhere in the line and begin to harden.

Solutions are usually simple when a clog occurs, and this is what the guys at The World of Plumbing suggests: 1. Try a plunger

Unless you have had any formal nutritional training, it is unlikely that you have more than a vague concept of what a serving size actually is. Along with that, many of us have no idea of how to use our food as fuel first and then as fun.

We need to have a clear understanding of Nutrient Density but instead we are dense about nutrients because we haven't been taught yet!

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

North American society is getting larger - but we aren't talking about an increase in birthrate, it's an increase in body weight for many. With that expanse, we are seeing the associated increase in chronic disease which might otherwise be less severe or avoided if we had the knowledge and ability to apply it to our nutrition and lifestyle choices. This puts a huge burden on our health care system as poor nutrition affects our immune health, often resulting in time lost from work and school too.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS?

When working with my Clients, part of a consult might involve discovering what their overall nutritional understanding is in regard to their goals and present health concerns, along with reviewing whether it is in their best interest to consider supplements for a period of time. Adjustments to food choices and quantities, when made as lifestyle adjustments (not just a temporary diet), can bring about dramatic results.

WHERE DO YOU START?

One of the best places to begin with, is by learning how to determine what a serving size actually is, what macronutrient food groups are, which food groups we need, and how many servings we require from those groups.

Different life stages, genders, activity levels and health conditions, will have differences in nutritional requirements.

Growth stages, highly active individuals, convalescing patients, pregnant and nursing women etc., will have different requirements due to the added demands on their bodies.

Learning to read and understand Nutritional Labels on your food is critical and yet so many of us either fail to read the label

or aren't sure how to interpret what they are seeing. After all, by definition a Family can consist of a couple so a family size bag of chips is okay to eat all at once, right? Or you can invite one person over and call it a party and get the Party size instead... this happens, a lot! These foods are calorie dense and low in nutritional value as well unfortunately.

Beverages are also a source of hidden calories we need to keep track of, especially in social situations!

Dining out can be a problem because of the servings being offered (and if you have a healthy appetite combined with little will power like many of us), for instance, someone 5' tall and relatively inactive, will be served the same amount as someone 6' tall and very active - these individuals don't have anywhere near the same calorie requirements. This is where it is important to know what serving size is appropriate for you and what range of calories you need to stay within to stay on track for a healthy body weight.

Fortunately, our hand size can be a great tool for gauging the appropriate serving size when out and about. I don't recommend going "full cave man" to measure your food in your hands when out in a fine dining establishment or seeing if your scalding hot soup fits in the palms of your hands, but there are some handy little know how tips to understanding what a serving size should look like when you are out and about and when you should ask for a take-out container!

Learning your nutrient requirements and your activity expenditure required (energy in vs. energy out), can be very empowering and rewarding. Find your balance!

TO LOW EXPECTATIONS I was amazed at the number of quality race finishes from Norfolk runners on June 9 and 10.

It was unprecedented for both male and female runners from a vast majority of age groups, running a variety of distances. There were podium finishes, personal bests (PB) and first-time accomplishments!

Congratulations to all!

I know almost all of these individuals and I can tell you without a doubt, they all strive to be the best runners they can be! They all train hard and often, enjoy challenging themselves to reach new goals, learning about their bodies, and understanding the importance of proper nutrition and rest! Due to the natural oils that the body produces during the night, it's best to clean the seal daily to make sure the maximum life span is achieved. The best thing to clean the seal with is mild soap (such as liquid hand soap) or CPAP Wipes. Once a week, the

humidifier chamber, hose and mask shell and headgear should get cleaned.

These items can be cleaned in a sink of mild soapy water, rinsed well and hung to dry.

Q: I HAVE EXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT CHANGE; WILL THIS HAVE AN EFFECT ON MY CPAP? A: Yes. A significant change in weight, up or down, can seriously affect your

Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD THE PARTS ON MY CPAP UNIT BE REPLACED? A: Filters should be replaced every 3-6 months. Filters are washable once, but generally if they are washed more than once, they will start to deteriorate and be less effective at their job. The CPAP hose and humidifier chamber should

MAKING A DIFFERENCE. When I started working out with Chris last November, I knew that for my trail running I would want to return to the form I had before my heart attack - but first I needed to address certain aspects of my training to make myself as healthy as I could!

Chris developed a proper plan that would slowly bring me along in my development. Stretching, strength, mobility and flexibility training were all incorporated into a constantly changing routine that challenged me.

There were a few times the day after a workout, when I could still feel exactly which part of my body had been the focus. It was all part of the process.

Now you have to realise that I was only coming to the gym twice a week to give my running a delicate balance.

Of course, along the way, there were a few setbacks, nothing critical but enough to make you wonder, "Why am I doing this?" Or those early winter mornings heading to the gym when it would have been so easy to just stay in bed!

The workouts seemed to invigorate me. I always felt absolutely fantastic after and had a better sense of the untapped potential within me.

I freely admit that I am weaker at some of the training drills (pull-ups), but Chris is patient and reminds me of where I was when I began, and how far I have come.

A few weeks ago I decided to see how far all the running and weight training had brought me. I entered a 12.5k trail race with our running group known as D.I.R.T. I had not raced since my heart attack (I had done a marathon, leisurely, before I began training with Chris). Well, the race started, and off I went cautiously, easily. It wasn't long before I realised I needed to pick it up and race! So I did. I ran as fast as this old body would allow, without a care in the world. As the kilometre markers passed, my pace continued to grow stronger. I was catching guys half my age, and I figured sooner or later they would track me down! However, the strangest thing happened, I never slowed down, my form stayed strong, and my body just kept pushing clean and free! I finished with an impressive kick at the end, coming 27th out of 450 folks, 3rd in my age group! Man, I was happy I was back! I knew the work Chris had done with me played a large part in my body being able to run at such a high level for that race.

If not for the strength training I know at 8 or 9 kilometres, I would have started to fade!

Buoyancy renders the average person practically “weightless” in water, making the fantasy possible. Now this “weightless” effect resulting from buoyancy (or our ability to float in water) is being used in aquatic therapy, an emerging treatment helping a variety of people experiencing a wide range of health conditions. As we move in water, buoyancy greatly reduces strain on our joints – submersion in neck deep water decreases weight bearing by up to 90% – and the water also serves as natural resistance for a surprisingly intense workout.

The reason that being in water delivers a surprisingly intense workout has to do with water resistance. Water provides excellent resistance because its higher viscosity makes muscles work harder than when doing the same exercises on dry land. Water’s viscosity (or the state of being thick in consistency due to internal molecular friction) means that more effort is needed for each movement. In addition, the heart also must work harder in order to deliver blood to the muscles, which leads to a good workout for the cardiovascular system. Aquatic therapy also utilizes hydrostatic pressure.

Hydrostatic pressure – defined as the force exerted on the body that is

immersed in liquid – produces forces perpendicular to the body’s surface.

This pressure makes the patient aware of the position of their joints. This improved proprioception is important in the case of treating joint sprains and ligament injuries. Hydrostatic pressure also helps to decrease joint and soft tissue swelling that often accompanies injury.

Aquatic therapy is great for joint pain and immobility issues of all kinds, which are perhaps the most common physical issues facing an aging population. Arthritis, for example, is a degenerative inflammatory condition in the joints that is exacerbated by weight bearing. In water, you can achieve the same range of motion as on land but without loading the joints – this can help older people remain active with less pain and therefore improve quality of life. Aquatic therapy also might figure into a “prehab” plan in the weeks leading up to a surgery. In this case, muscles can be built up with less discomfort, so the patient is ahead of the game before the procedure and has less work to do post-op.

Athletic therapists aren’t the only ones using water in their programs.

Athletes of all kinds are training underwater for strength and endurance. Known as hydrathletics, it can be part of a cross-fit regime that offers a high-cardio, low impact workout. Anyone at any age can benefit from hydrathletics or aquatic therapy.

Think of the benefits for expecting moms who want to stay active as their body is working to handle the stress of pregnancy.

Think of those suffering any lower-body condition, from hip pain to tendinitis. Think of anyone who wants a hard workout with less compressive force.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CARE The Canadian Mental Health Association celebrates International Self-Care Day on July 24, 2018.

DEFINITION OF SELF-CARE "Self-Care is what people do for themselves to establish and maintain physical and mental health, and to prevent and deal with illness. It is a broad concept encompassing hygiene (general and personal), nutrition (type and quality of food eaten), lifestyle (sporting activities, leisure etc.), environmental factors (living conditions, social habits, etc.) socio-economic factors (income level, cultural beliefs, etc.) and self-medication." World Health Organization July 24 is International Self-Care Day (ISCD), which aims to raise public awareness of the importance of self-care to stay both physically and mentally healthy and prevent or delay illness. The theme for this year’s ISCD is, “Feel Good.”

Established in 2011 by the International Self-Care Foundation (ISCF), Self-Care Day aims to raise public awareness of the importance of self-care to stay healthy and prevent or delay illness.

Self-care means taking small steps to live a healthy lifestyle every day. To help, ISCF has developed a framework for self-care around seven pillars or domains, one of which is mental well-being and self-awareness.

1. Knowledge and Health Literacy

2. Mental Well-Being

3. Physical Activity

4. Healthy Eating

5. Risk Avoidance

6. Good Hygiene

7. Rational and responsible use of products

CMHA joins individuals and organizations around the globe in celebrating International Self-Care Day. A number of CMHA services promote self-care, recovery, and resiliency. CMHA recognizes that mental health is not the avoidance of mental health conditions but rather about living well and feeling capable despite challenges.

Mental health is also influenced by a range of factors, including our life experiences, workplace or other environments, and the social and economic conditions that shape our lives.

Wake Up With LEMON WATER. Whether you feel well rested or absolutely exhausted in the morning, many people's first indulgence is a cup of coffee. Some temporary effects can be noted from caffeine, however, consumption of a glass of lemon water to start the day hydrates and cleanses the digestive tract. Coffee has the ability to alert or “wake up” your system temporarily as caffeine has specific properties that speed up neural activity and transmission to the brain. Because of these properties, overconsumption of coffee can start to have negative side effects such as headaches and stomach irritation. Replacing lemon water as your first cup of the day can be refreshing and have comparable effects on drowsiness.
