Everyone knows the song “Mustang Sally” by Wilson Pickett, which was huge in 1966, hitting number 6 Dave Scot t on the R&B chart. The song, however, was originally written and released by Mack Rice in 1965, reaching number 15 on the chart. The original version was called “Mustang Mama,” but after recording the first demo, his pianist, Aretha Franklin, suggested a change and "Mustang Sally" was born. A year later Wilson Pickett released his version with the, “Ride, Sally, ride,” chorus.

MY DAD By: Dave Scott

There is no manual when you become a dad. You simply hope you make the right choices to guide your children along life's path.

Our kids are now 18 and 21. Time flew by, and they grew up fast! Both are fiercely independent and like to do their own thing. Not sure where they get that from - ha ha.

We don't get to see our daughter that often as she lives in Ottawa. We usually chat once a week on the phone and drive up there when we can. It's funny how nowadays I catch myself looking at her photos on the walls. A smile crosses my face as I think back to when she was so young, she has always been so determined and focused. She was out the door at eighteen, headed for university, there was no stopping her.

Our son, well he is bursting at the seams to break free from mom and dad. I get it. He reminds me of myself at that age, confident, challenging and independent. We love our kids, and it is hard to let go, but life moves forward. We stand ready to help if they need, the door is always open!

As for my own dad, I want to share a lesson I learned the hard way.

I remember one year when I was ten or eleven years old, I had a paper route and had saved up a few bucks. I really wanted to get my dad something cool for Father's Day, so I went uptown to Stoney's Hardware Store. I searched high and low, and finally found this perfect fishing reel - he loved to fish! I just had to get it for him. It was going to cost me pretty much all of the money, but to me, it was the way I could show him I was growing up. At that time my dad was still the person I looked up to the most, sure he had his faults, but he was my dad. I remember giving it to him for Father’s Day, proud ask a peacock, and of course, he seemed excited! It was a moment where I felt like I was showing my love to him. That wasn't something we were going to say to each other, it just never happened, but I think he understood. Unfortunately, our relationship never really grew much beyond that point. I guess that is why that Father’s Day memory sticks with me!

continuous drinking and the trouble it caused left scars to this day that can never be repaired. Finally, when I finished high school, I had enough and moved out! At the time I remember thinking, "Good riddance, hope I never see you again!" I was on my own, free as a bird, to do what I wanted when I wanted. Life was good, I worked, travelled and had fun! If I passed my dad on the street, I would nod and say hi, but that was it. Occasionally he would stop by, but I would greet him at his car. I didn't want him hanging around; I was embarrassed by him.

When my dad became ill (liver cancer due to the drinking), he stopped in to visit me at my business. He was 46 years old, but he looked 80. His body was starting to fail, and he looked weak and frail. We hadn't talked in years, and I think my anger with him was still boiling inside of me. I had no sympathy for him. Looking back now, I can see that I was hurt and reacting to him as he had always behaved towards me!

The conversation was short. My dad asked if I could find the time to go fishing with him. He wanted to rent a boat, and the two of us grab a couple of beers and hang out. There was a tired, scared look in his yellow eyes. The anger was gone, and hope was fading.

I looked back at him, and I could feel the anger in my own eyes, the kind I had witnessed from him for years. I told him I was too busy, maybe some other time. He said okay, turning away. It must have stung him, and it left me feeling like I finally had the upper hand. He opened the door and moved slowly; I turned and walked away.

It was the biggest mistake I ever made!

We were never able to connect in life. When I look back now, I somewhat understand. His dad was never around for him, and well it occurred to me that if no one showed you the ropes, how were you supposed to know what to do with your own kids?

It wasn't long after that he was hospitalised and did not want to see anyone. He died a short time later, that was our last conversation. It hurts to this day. It took me a long time to realise that the fishing reel from years before had come full circle. He was trying to say I love you and thank you in his own way!

NEVER SAY NEVER “This is life. Things get taken away. You will learn to start over many times – or you will be useless.”

Mitch Albom On a summer day in 2016, I was running on the Lynn Valley Trail as I often did. Although running had become increasingly difficult during the preceding few years, I thought I was moving along alright until a young woman, cycling in the opposite direction, stopped when she reached me. She asked if she could call anyone. It seemed to me to be a clear sign that it was time to face reality and get a new knee.

In October of that year, I had a total replacement of my left knee. In May 2017, I walked 241 miles in a 6 day event in New Jersey, in order to help understand what an attempt at my age group record might entail. In July 2017, I underwent surgery to have my other knee totally replaced. Both knees had gotten to the stage where there was no cartilage remaining due to the wear and tear of osteoarthritis.

On the evening of Thursday, July 6, 2017, for the second time in nine months, I was taken up to a room on the fifth floor of Brantford General Hospital to begin my recovery. I had an IV attached, a catheter and a breathing tube. Throughout what remained of the day, I was frequently checked and given various pills. The next day I was taken by the physiotherapist for a little stroll using a walker and then sat in a chair by my bed for a while. On Saturday morning I walked again, passed the stair-climbing test easily and was released at noon.

As occurred the first time, my days at home were separated into four hour blocks, the time between pain pills. There was a great deal of swelling in the entire lower leg, no mobility and very significant pain.

Most of my time was spent trying to get through my assigned exercises and resting. I was well aware of what I was about to endure as the memories of the first knee surgery were still vivid.

On July 13, one week after the operation, I went for my first slow ten minute walk back and forth on the

driveway, using the walker. On the 17th, Dave Scott graciously drove me back to Brantford to get the staples out of my leg. We walked to and from the hospital parking lot. I had my first physio appointment the next day. I was allowed a full shower on the 19th, the first time the healing knee incision was permitted to get wet. The shower was a major treat for me and possibly for all my contacts.

Sixteen days after the operation, I tried to ride my stationary bike for the first time. My knee would not bend well enough to allow a full rotation, but I did very easy partial rotations for ten minutes. I had my last major pain pill on July 27 and the next day was able to do a few full rotations on the bike. Overdoing it somewhat, I cut my entire lawn on August 1, but paid for it with increased swelling, as well as major stiffness.

By the middle of the month, I was walking fifteen minutes daily, with the aid of my cane and riding the stationary bike for twenty minutes once or twice a day.

On the last day of August, I had a check-up with my surgeon Dr. James Dill. Without great enthusiasm, he stated that I could try a little jogging when the swelling had gone down in my knee. I was to judge the amount based on my pain tolerance and the amount of increased inflammation after working out. By this time I was walking about 35 minutes a day but was still using a cane.

On September 5, I tried walking for an hour. Once again, I was a little ambitious. I got very stiff and tired by the end. My leg was quite sore for the rest of the day. I dropped back to walking 40 minutes and cycling the same amount on a daily basis. September 12, once again I went for one hour, doing a bit over 5k and not using the cane. The following day had to be one of full rest.

On September 16, I went with the North Shore walking group, completing 6 km in 62 minutes and feeling good. By early October, I was walking five or six kilometres every day and beginning to do minijogs of up to 5 minutes, albeit very stiffly using short strides. On the 15th of the month, I managed to do one kilometre in 6:30. Shortly afterwards, I had to back off my increasing workload again. I took a minibreak as I was feeling tired and not running smoothly at all. My right leg was weak and sore in many places.

The physiotherapist concluded this resulted from an inflamed right IT band and advised me to take it easy for a while. I did so for a few days.

The week of November 13 saw me build up to a total of 70 km with a number of short runs but still mostly walking. That Saturday 14 km was completed. A typical hard workout at this time was a seven minute easy run alternated with a three minute walk, seven times on the Lynn Valley Trail.

The week of December 4, I reached a total of 100 km for the first time, with a longest walk of 15 km in just over 2 hours. All the time, I was still using the stationary bike up to 40 minutes a day, as well as doing my knee rehabilitation exercises. By now the trail was too snowcovered for me and we also suffered through a severe cold snap from Christmas until the end of the first week of January 2018.

Tuesday, January 9 was a special day on my comeback.

I participated in a group workout with the North Shore Runners for the first time in 22 months. I felt that maybe I would actually be able to return to real running and I was elated. On Saturday of that week I did 20 km in a little over 3 hours on the snowy roads with a wind chill factor of -21 Celsius. I was getting back to what I had long been used to. At the end of the month, I did a long slow jog/walk of 4 hours 40 minutes. I got some major blisters and my right foot was very sore in the

area of my bunion. My feet had yet to be toughened up.

On February 8, I ran 6.6 km in 40:13 and felt good all the way. At the middle of the month, I did a 5 hour walk/run on my long workout day and the week’s total hit a new high of 120 km. By the end of the month I was able to be back on the Lynn Valley Trail. It is my favourite place to train as the surface is much more forgiving than the asphalt of the roads.

By March, I was back doing Tuesday/Thursday workouts on a regular basis with the running group as well as having company for part of my Saturday long run/walk. On March 26, I went 44 km and that week my total distance was 130 km, the highest yet. My only major issue was trying to deal with the bunion. I was experimenting with various bandaging and protective pad methods. Some days I still felt like the only thing slower than me was the coming of spring.

In the middle of April, I had another week of over 130 km and one effort of 7 hours before cutting back my mileage for the three weeks before my 6 day race in New Jersey.

I would soon find out if my rehabilitation from the second total knee replacement and my many walking and running workouts throughout the long and unobliging winter had prepared me for any semblance of a successful and pleasurable multi-day event.

Friend or Foe?

Social media has sure changed the world of privacy and expanding our friends (?). I enjoy keeping in touch with my true friends who live many hours away. It keeps each of us informed of what’s happening in our lives, as well as viewing relevant photos. For many of my “Facebook friends,” it has become a way of bragging – especially, in my case, of fishing.

This is all good as I do enjoy seeing people's smiles and accomplishments. I am all about seeing a happy face with their catch, no matter how big or small. It also means they are outside enjoying the outdoors. Nothing makes me smile more than seeing young people on their bikes or walking with a fishing rod in hand or in a backpack.

I would like to remind Facebook users that the photos are date stamped and, of course, the date and time you posted is attached to the post. This makes it very easy for friends, or anyone else, to determine your whereabouts.

Just recently an individual posted and bragged about their jubilation in landing many smallmouth bass from a prominent southern Ontario river. These fish were all held in different positions out of the water. He proudly exclaimed all bass were released and swam away. All good…right? Not so. The bass season in that particular part of the province of Ontario does not open until the fourth Saturday of June. This year that means June 23. In this case the fish were caught on May 21. In other words, one month before the actual bass fishing season commences.

You may ask – but is that okay because the angler released his catch? Legally the angler is actually in possession of those bass as he had removed them from their home, the river - even if only for a minute for a quick photo. He could be legally charged of possession of bass out of season.

The other part of this happy mishap is the background in each of the pictures is the same. If a Conservation Officer was watching, it could be argued you were actually targeting the smallmouth bass. An officer will usually be lenient if you did it for one caught bass, even two. But when the officer notes after two bass you did not leave that stretch of the river, you actually were illegally fishing for a sport fish out of season. All of a sudden your happiness will turn upside down when charged and possibly your equipment seized.

Any Ontario sport fish caught outside of the legal fishing season is deemed to be in possession when removed from the water. If at all possible, remove the hook while the serving Lake erie Boaters fish is still in the water. There are very few situations for over 60 years when this cannot be done. Remember, depending on the severity of the fishing infraction, you could lose your fishing privileges for a designated time period. Is it really worth that grip and grin photo? I would say, no!

The Inner Long Point Bay sanctuary is in place until Saturday, June 23, 2018. Please respect this sanctuary as it protects the bass spawning time.

As a kid growing up, it seemed my dad read a lot of books about World War II. I think perhaps being born during the war had something to do with it.

We never got around to talking about why he read them, but as the years in my life wore on, I found myself reading many history books surrounding the war. I guess he was a history buff, as for myself, I’m still not sure why I’m so drawn. In the early 90’s my wife and I visited Vimy Ridge (I had read Pierre Burton’s book twice, but visiting the site shook both of us to the very core). Looking out over Vimy and trying to comprehend all those lives lost, brought tears to our eyes.

Spending quality time with my late friend Ike, who fought in World War II and survived many years as a POW, gave me the ultimate insight and perspective of what the war must have been like.

Recently I was contacted by April Cormaci and Ian Durand from the Dunnville area. They had come across the Hub and called asking about advertising. They explained their involvement with the No. 6 RCAF Dunnville Museum. I have known about the museum for many years, but have never made it down for a visit, a mere 40-45 minutes away. I decided to go, and it was wonderful to see April and Ian’s passion for the work they do in their community. It was obvious that the Hub needed to do a story. Ian was my personal tour guide when I arrived at the No. 6 that afternoon.

The dedication of the volunteers who continue to keep the museum functioning is amazing. You could tell that the folks I met were avid caretakers

of the museum, its history and its artifacts. I was surprised to learn that this museum receives no government funding besides the occasional Trillium grant. It really makes you appreciate what this small group of people are able to do! They truly are the keepers of our local history.

The museum itself is excellent with displays and historical preservation of the documentation of the men and the women who trained and worked there, as well of those who perished training on site.

By late 1940, the Dunnville Airport was open to house the No. 6 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) and training pilots from - Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia and the United

States. The sky over Haldimand and Norfolk was soon filled with training planes.

It is estimated that between the Jarvis, Hagersville and Dunnville sites, as many as 400 planes could be in the air at one time. Just think about that for a minute, amazing!

Ian explained that in 1942 the air force added women to the services. The Dunnville Museum has a wonderful tribute to the ladies and the part they played at the No. 6. In 1944 the No. 6 was at its peak with 1500 people on the base doing everything they could to contribute to the war effort.

With the Jarvis and Hagersville sites long gone, our only direct connection to the war years is in Dunnville. The hanger at No. 6 is filled with vintage planes, all there for us to see and reconnect with our past, of who we are as a community! Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the No. 6, it is well worth the time. Ask for Ian or April, they are excellent guides.

With my tour coming to an end I asked Ian if I could take one more look around. It was then I discovered that among the tributes to pilots that had trained there, a young man was from Jarvis and his name was Jack Addison. Jack went on to serve in the war and came back home but lost his life in a plane crash. My neighbour down the road in Port Ryerse is also Jack Addison, and I wondered if there was any connection? I saw Jack a few days later and he told me it was his uncle. He smiled when I told him about the display at the Dunnville Museum and the nice tribute to his uncle. He said he would have to get down and see it. Jack is right, we all need to go see it and appreciate the incredible history we have.

MY FATHER

I noticed when they closed it. I noticed when they tore it down. The events were separated by a handful of years, but when I saw a recent development, I knew the old landscape would permanently erase the old one this time.

Buildings come and go. Ostensibly to better suit the needs of many, but too often to fatten the wallets of others. In my small town, there used to house a long row of stores. The people living there had an A&P, videos, a Zellers, a liquor store, a restaurant, a license office and a bank. It was a service plaza. The parking lot was a little ratty.

It has been gone for years now, because beneath the tired asphalt was property value just begging to be exploited. They have built high rise complexes there now, and all those people must drive to shop for things that were once sold there.

In the far end of that parking lot was the Canadian Tire. It was small. I think it only had one service bay when I was a kid, but I could be wrong. There is a bigger, fancier one now in another spot in town, which keeps growing to accommodate the growing population. Even so, it was the small one that was perfect for say, my father and me to go and buy a handful of screws or a particular drill bit.

Unable to find the right size washer on the twist tie where he kept them, like beads on a necklace, Dad and I would go to Canadian Tire. Nowadays, I buy packages at a time to always have on hand, because that is more efficient. Today we measure errands in terms of money and time, forgetting the value of excursions in other ways.

There was an AMC dealership across the road as I remember. Even though Dad only bought a new car every ten years, he would go and hang out there, checking all the new advancements in the Ramblers, but mostly just to be around cars.

I would pester him for a nickel to feed the gumball machine. The salesman would usually give me one, knowing my father would not go anywhere else to buy his new car.

If our station wagon was on the hoist for some malady, I knew we would cross the street to Canadian Tire. Mom would take us to the mall for winter coats and shoes, but Dad was your guy to learn the difference between 3 kinds of screwdrivers, and yes, Robertson’s made more sense, and did I know they were invented by a Canadian?

The Canadian Tire catalogue was a big deal in most households. We would fight over it twice a year, whipping past the pages of tires to get to the seasonal stuff: games and toys at Christmas, more importantly, flippers and air mattresses for summer. Our tiny store had an even smaller section devoted to these goods, an alcove with a wooden floor packed full, with bits of everything. While my father would be off deciding if he needed a new ball peen hammer, my sister and I would dream of getting a new inner tube, one that wasn’t an actual truck inner tube with a huge nozzle that stuck in our side if we jumped off the dock the wrong way.

We never got the prettier, fancier one, because father knew the truck inner tube was much sturdier. We got new flippers if he knew there wasn’t a pair that would fit at the cottage. We learned this the hard way, when a friend who was visiting lost one, gone forever in the mud of the lake. Four decades later, I still remember the lecture on carelessness.

If the car was being serviced for a maintenance job in between something Dad might do himself and something that required an AMC specialist, he’d let them handle it in the single bay at the tiny Canadian Tire. He knew the mechanics, and he would hang around the garage like a mother keeping an eye on her newborn.

Job finished, you would take your work order over to the narrow office. With an efficient twist, they’d roll your cash into the bill, tuck it into a cylinder and insert it into a magical tube where air suction would send it hurling into outer space. I learned later, it would just send it to the business office upstairs, but outer space seemed much more interesting. Dad let me believe that because even serious men can have moments of whimsy with children who can’t see over the counter.

The best part was when the tube came whooshing back, coins rattling in the tube. The change and the receipt would tumble out, and Dad would hand me a nickel for the candy machine in the corner. I had no idea who the Kiwanis were, but they sure got a lot of my nickels back then.

Yes, times have changed. But these are the greatest memories I have of my Dad and our visits to our local Canadian Tire. Stores are bigger and fancier, relocated from the original locations, but the memories will never be forgotten. Most kids got their first bike from a Canadian Tire. If that isn’t a memory maker, I don’t know what is.

Here's an interesting take on why some drivers have all the luck, or more appropriately, "bad luck" on the road. Most people are aware that astrology and their astrological sign can affect many aspects of their lives.

However, you may never stop and think about how your astrological sign can affect your driving habits.

Lee Romanov, the president of InsuranceHotline.com has written a new book titled “Car Carma.” In “Car Carma,” Lee talks about how your zodiac sign can affect personal driving habits and how that can in turn increase or decrease your chances for being involved in an accident, getting a ticket, or paying a higher premium for car insurance.

To see why there was a variance between the insurance companies high and low rates, Lee compared 100,000 drivers from North America. She looked at their driving records, including number of tickets and accidents they had been in and then took a look at their astrological sign. She saw a pattern – drivers of certain signs were more likely to get tickets or be in an accident than others.

For our coffee time this month, Vic and I were chatting about the Royal family. When in conversation with Vic, he and I tend to be all over the map on our subject matter, which always makes for an interesting visit full of storytelling. This time was no different, I casually joked about Vic Gibbons and royalty, "Now that would be interesting!" Vic laughed and said, "Just a minute," as he left the room and came back with an article that had to be over 20 years old. He said, "Give this a read."

Wouldn't you know it, back in 1997 Vic was helping out the Long Point Foundation and ended up having a print called Morning Sugar Bush presented to His Royal Highness Prince Philip. I asked Vic if he got to meet the Prince and he explained that he and the late Tom Miller were in somewhat of a receiving line where they walked by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

It seems that I have a yearly tradition, where I forget to turn off the pipes that lead to the outdoor shower underneath the deck. This is the third time I have done this. Usually I call the plumber, but I figured this year perhaps I would solve the problem myself, or at least attempt to! I decided to talk to the guys at the World of Plumbing. Rob, Doug and Jeff were great last month when they helped me get the taps working properly. Let’s see if this month they can help me fix my leaks under my deck.

I could tell by the way Jeff looked at the pipe I had cut with my hacksaw, that he needed to take his time with this problem I had.

First, he explained that perhaps I should be using a Rigid I" close quarters tubing cutter. “You know, so the edges are not so jagged.”

Then he took me over to the PushNConnect valves with stiffeners and explained that these connectors could be simply pushed on to your Copper, PEX or CPVC pipe and just like that you are done! I think he knew I had an old torch and some solder at home and thought it best to show me a simpler way of fixing my problem before burning down my deck!

Of course, I went home and followed Jeff's instructions, and my mess was fixed and cleaned up in no time. Thanks Jeff!

For years I have told Katrina how I am going to finally stain my deck. Every year, I come up with some reason not to, too much rain, too hot, too cold, too windy, but now I am out of excuses. Well enough is enough, this summer it shall be done! I asked Katrina for the order of operations, and of course, she provided a list of how to properly prep and stain my deck. So, without further I do, here is the advice from Katrina.

Clean your deck, use a pressure washer. TSP and bleach mixture helps to rid your deck of dirt and mildew. Make sure that the wood has time to dry.

Check for loose nails and replace them with the next size up for a better grip and after that putty in your nail holes (if using a solid-stain).

Prime all bare areas and puttied spots with high-quality, oil base primer (when using a solid stain). Katrina suggests Dulux Jammer Primer.

Finish decks with high grade, oil/acrylic Wood Pride Solid or Semi-Transparent stain from Dulux.

If your springtime melody to this old folk song is a series of sneezes and sniffles, and you feel you should own shares in a tissue factory, you aren't alone!

Seasonal allergies affect a huge sector of the population just because they are common, doesn't mean the symptoms are easy to deal with!

It's likely you have seen the commercial with the woman sneezing vigorously, eyes red and puffy, nose red and running, tissues in hand (a hot mess for sure) - people around her back off fearing exposure to something contagious and the sufferer apologetically explains it's "just allergies."

Vitamin C, Quercetin and Bioflavonoids, Black Cumin Seed Oil, Omega 3 and even Probiotics. The overall strategy is to reduce/block the complex series of chemical and hormonal events that stimulate the inflammatory, histamine response and regulate that hypersensitive immune function.

Timing your outdoor activities can also impact the severity of symptoms and exposure to pollens - most pollen release occurs between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Dry, windy weather will keep atmospheric pollens more airborne than will wet weather which tends to suppress pollen counts.

The most sensible scenario is that the allergy sufferer is aware of and able to avoid or reduce exposure to their known triggers. Often times this isn't possible, or there are numerous substances to which a person reacts to, and exposure can't be avoided. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist before choosing an over the counter allergy product - many are contraindicated when on certain prescription medications or with certain health conditions.

After anticipating the warmth and sun of spring and summer, it's unfortunate that these disruptive and uncomfortable symptoms make people want to hide inside with their windows closed and the air conditioning on. Outdoor activities and yard work will invariably increase your exposure and contact with allergens, consider making your bedroom at least, the allergy free zone to give yourself a healing, restful sleep. Yard clothes should be changed in the laundry room and shower or bath prior to bed so that pollens and other allergens are not tracked into the room with you. Air purifiers are another tool that can create a space to breathe more easily. For those that still enjoy the vision and smell of laundry freshly dried on the line, consider other options for family members suffering seasonal allergies as this may be an added provocation they would do well without (both pollens and insects can be brought into the house in this manner).

Dependent on the degree of suffering, there are many natural products available to help alleviate or manage the discomfort. My husband has "gently" explained though, that if he gets slapped in the face by a low hanging, pollinating Maple tree branch, he just wants Benadryl stat - never mind any of my supplements. With allergies, you want to be one step ahead of your known "trigger(s)" and have a proactive plan in place (like watching out for those tree branches ☺).

The sun sure is getting hot, and I see plenty of folks who are going out for their morning runs. Scot and I thought it best to share a few reminders before the weather gets too warm.

Number one take your water with you, be it hand-held or a hydration pack, always carry water.

Number two is sunscreen. It is critical to make sure you get those exposed areas, arms, legs, face, neck and ears.

A few years ago, I was given an opportunity to interview a couple of folks who were struggling with mental health issues. One was battling schizophrenia, and the other was dealing with bipolar issues. To sit and listen to their lifelong battles, their treatments, their hopes for the future, their perspectives on life, and their day to day reality, was a real eye opener!

They both agreed that one element in their life had made an immense difference in their daily struggles! EXERCISE! One person had taken up swimming, something she had always enjoyed. That commitment helped her focus and gave her drive to get up and go every day. The other person had found that going for long walks as often as possible with their pet had a positive impact.

I think we as a society forget just how critical exercise is to a person’s mental health.

Exercise and depression

Studies show that exercise can treat mild to moderate depression as effectively as antidepressant medication—but without the side-effects, of course. In addition to relieving depression symptoms, research also shows that maintaining an exercise schedule can prevent you from relapsing.

Exercise is a powerful depression fighter for several reasons. Most importantly, it promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being. It also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good. Finally, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression.

Exercise and anxiety

Exercise is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment. It relieves tension and stress, boosts physical and mental energy, and enhances well-being through the release of endorphins. Anything that gets you moving can help, but you’ll get a bigger benefit if you pay attention instead of zoning out.

Try to notice the sensation of your feet hitting the ground, for example, or the rhythm of your breathing, or the feeling of the wind on your skin. By adding this mindfulness element—really focusing on your body and how it feels as you exercise—you’ll not only improve your physical condition faster, but you may also be able to interrupt the flow of constant worries running through your head.

Ever noticed how your body feels when you’re under stress? Your muscles may be tense, especially in your face, neck, and shoulders, leaving you with back or neck pain, or painful headaches. You may feel a tightness in your chest, a pounding pulse, or muscle cramps. You may also experience problems such as insomnia, heartburn, stomach ache, diarrhea, or frequent urination. The worry and discomfort of all these physical symptoms can in turn lead to even more stress, creating a vicious cycle between your mind and body.

Exercising is an effective way to break this cycle. As well as releasing endorphins in the brain, physical activity helps to relax the muscles and relieve tension in the body. Since the body and mind are so closely linked, when your body feels better so, too, will your mind.

Cover up! Use a hat to cover your hair while you are out in the sun.

Always use conditioner! Your hair will be in need of extra moisture, and the conditioner will help seal the cuticle to protect against colour loss and frizz.

Summer is an important time to keep up with trimming your ends.

It can be tempting to skip getting a haircut when you want to grow your hair. However, keeping up with regular trims will eliminate split ends and bring life back to your hair.

Give heat styling a break! Summer is the perfect time of year to go for the more natural unstyled look. If you must use heat styling products remember to use a heat protection spray such as Living Proof Restore Instant Protection or Moroccanoil Perfect Defense.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WORK FOR THOSE LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS Employment is a critical part of social inclusion, however people living with mental health problems and illnesses are facing the highest unemployment rate of any disability group. Although people want to work and are able, for many, employment remains an elusive goal leading to, poverty, exclusion, isolation and lessened self-esteem. Stigma, self-stigma, discrimination, limited employment supports can all play a critical role in exclusion from the workforce beyond limitations imposed by the illness.

In addition, as a result of self-stigma people living with mental illness believe they can no longer work, or that it’s too stressful for them, or simply that they are not ready to work. Research has shown this not to be true: “Returning to work after a period of illness, including mental illhealth, helps recovery and is the best way to prevent long-term sickness. The health status of people of all ages improves when they move off of benefits and into work. This is true for people with mild or severe mental health problems. It is not surprising then that the vast majority of people who are out of work, and use mental health services, want to return to or to start work.”

Vocational Support Services at the Canadian Mental Health Association, Brant Haldimand Norfolk Branch help people living with mental illness return to work and increase their chances of long term health all at the same time. Work offers perks well beyond the pay cheque. These are the benefits that our Vocational Support Workers stress to the people they work with every day.

Going to work gives structure to our day, something to do to occupy ourselves, increasing the feeling that we have a purpose in this world. We make new social contacts and maybe even a friend or two, increasing our self-esteem and expanding our circle of support. When we have someone counting on us, we tend to take better care of ourselves both physically and mentally. Concentrating on work gives us a mental break from our feelings and our life. Less time to dwell on our problems is never a bad thing.

Using the services of a vocational worker will help ease the transition for you. We update your marketing tools by updating your resume and cover letter. We walk you through the anxiety you may be feeling about returning to the workforce. We help you develop and maintain a healthy work-life balance. We get you to look at developing life skills that will help you both on the job and off. Lastly, we help you cope with the interpersonal landmines that sometimes are the hardest part of the job.
